"About the FBI search at the Mar-a-Lago club of former president Donald Trump. Garland mentioned the search was pursuant to a court approved warrant. First, I personally approved the decision to seek a search warrant in this matter. Second, the department does not take such a decision lightly. Let's talk about this with the NPR's Ryan Lucas. He covers the Justice Department, and he's in the studio with me. Hey, Ryan. Heather. So Merrick Garland city asked the federal court in Florida to unseal the warrant and a property receipt for what was taken. Why would he want to unseal these documents? Well, I mean, Garland proceeded that by saying that the Justice Department is going to speak through its court fund. He's not going to get up onto the podium at the Justice Department and talk about why the Justice Department did this. We'll speak through court filings, which is that the standard operating procedure for the Justice Department. But what this means is that the Justice Department wants the public to see the justification that the FBI had for conducting this search. And then also with that property receipt there, we will also see what it is that the FBI was taking. We'll have a detailed sense of what specifically it is that they were taking from. Oh, so to learn more. We will have a much better sense of what this was about and what they found once these documents aren't sealed. So this is really critical information. Okay. Okay. And are these unsealed quickly? Do we know? Don't keep refreshing. Garland also said he personally approved of this. Is it important to know that this went up to the very top of the Department of Justice? That had been our understanding all along that something of this magnitude would need to be signed off on. By the various very highest levels of the Justice Department and most likely by the attorney general himself because of the stakes of this. This is a court authorized search of a former president's home, it's something that has never been done. Everyone is aware of the import of that. And so we had always been of the understanding that this would have been the attorney general's decision in the end and he's confirming that. Okay. Okay, now his remarks come as Donald Trump supporters on the political right. I've said the FBI search was weaponized weaponizing the Department of Justice, Garland kind of mentioned these attacks. Why would he do that? As you mentioned, his department tends to speak through these legal papers. These legal filings. Well, there have been in some quarters of the right, some calls for violence against the FBI because of this search. And that's kind of part and parcel of the increase in violent rhetoric and violent threats that we've seen in the past several years in this country. And it's something that Garland has warned against. He says it's dangerous for the country. It's dangerous for our democracy now. We're seeing threats directed against the Justice Department and the FBI more broadly. And he was defending the men and women of the FBI and the Justice Department and he said that these are people who do a difficult job they put a lot on the line as your patriots and dedicated public servants. What do we know? It seems like we don't know a whole lot about the search at this point. There is a lot that we don't know. Stuff has trickled out slowly over the past several days since this search happened. There's been certainly a lot of speculation as to what this all is about. And that's why waiting for the court documents that the Justice Department has moved to a seal is so important because we will know what crimes it is. The Justice Department is investigating and what specifically it is they manage to get at Mar-a-Lago. Ryan Lucas covers the Justice Department for us at NPR. Brian, thanks very much. Thank you. It's here and now. Hi, I'm east Johnson. And if you're within the sound of my voice, that's good
