"Sometimes children even join them. We talked about that before in some of our previous discussions of battles, how the Mexican army would often travel these long distances across the desert and they didn't just have the army to feed, but they had hundreds, if not thousands of these sold the data. And the children can't followers. Yeah, they would. Yeah, they were just trying to stay alive. It was spouses and families of soldiers as well as settlers and traders. Folks who would sell things to the soldiers and then of course other women who were involved in some way with the soldiers as well. And this was not uncommon. This was not unique to Mexico. This was very common with a lot of armies in the world at the time. I was camp followers, definitely. I mean, you even had those in the Continental Army. They would often do the washing and the Motley picture. Molly pitcher was a real person. She didn't just show up for a battle. She was there in the army in the camp when the battle happened. Monmouth. Good old Molly, I'm glad. O'Malley pitcher. Yeah. Well, as with American soldiers, desserts are naturally was quite common among Mexican regulars. More often than not, was motivated by hunger, you know? If food and pay is irregular and you are forced to be a soldier, then there's food somewhere, then you're going to probably leave to go for it. Now, despite the rough character of many recruits and the poor treatment, they received, they were considered quite well trained and disciplined, and they fought very bravely. We talked about that extensively in our series on the tech revolution earlier and then also the last few episodes we've talked about the fighting in Monterey and then when it was. So as Gardena writes, their ability to quickly march long distances with little food and water astonished observers, especially when they went directly into battle afterwards. Officers in the Mexican army were usually tied to one another, the political faction, so they were either centralists or federalists or centralist federalist or sent to in general. 7 graduated from Mexico's military academy, but most obtained their positions through political or family connections. Quite a few officers began their career as enlisted men and they moved up through the ranks. So this was, this is actually something that could quite easily happen in the Mexican army, not very common at all in the American military. Except during times of war. So maybe there were some enlisted men in the war of 1812 or maybe in the Blackhawk fighting or the Seminole fighting that might have gotten a battlefield commission for example and worked their way up that way.

"Information about about activities or actions on the part of the former president trump. the prosecutor might be interested. I wasn't quite sure But i i think weisselberg having heard the president weaken weisselberg escapes We can his defense Might be rethinking and might be wondering Just how far out on this limb he wants to be if the president is going to continue to undercut any you know potential wines of defense. He might have And he could end up in jail. That's a serious thing for his age. As as i read arizona's new reports about the trump attempt to steal the election there That was blocked only by someone not returning his phone call. I was reading it in tandem with your recent piece about democracy itself in this country and one of the central flaws to put it mildly in our democracy the electoral college which is what these election schemes are. All about it was. There's no scheme to pick up an extra fine me. An extra seven million votes. There was no scheme along those lines. it was just. Can we find the votes in these pockets of the electoral college. And can we find them illegally that could reverse this and that's all thanks to this original design of the electoral college. This is an extraordinary thing about our system as you say when you talk to scholars from abroad. They're baffled by it. I mean they they look at you like you're crazy when you explain it. Are they already know it but they talk to you like you're crazy when they are trying to ask you why it but i want to know something lawrence at I didn't get to put in the piece. But you've given me a wonderful opportunity to talk about something else we do. It is very very unusual. Is our election. Administration is partisan so in other countries the people donald trump would be calling are not appointees of the republican party and are not republicans who ran for office. As in the case of the georgia secretary of state they are nonpartisan. Civic officials who are outside of the two party system do not have ambitions to succeed within a party and so are simply administering elections for the sake of elections. One of the things going on right. Now there's a series of bills if people know very well to impose voter. Id laws or not let you bring water to people waiting in line. But there's also a series of bills to further politicise election administration to bring further under the control of republican legislatures. If i remember the number right here. They're twenty eight bills at a pass like this in fourteen states criminalising politicizing or otherwise giving republican legislators more power over election ministration and that too is really unusual at is a compounding vulnerability in our system built atop the electoral college. These outcomes like the ones who seen in recent elections. If i remember the number here is something like if you flip. Twenty two or twenty four thousand votes in a couple of states. You could have gotten an electoral college tie which trump and would have won in the house around resentatives and so having a republican artisan officials running elections where you then have margins that narrow because of the electoral college. Not because of the voters is an extraordinary vulnerability in our system and gene. Halfway to the electoral college would be picking up a georgia and arizona. And then trump just needed to get wisconsin and michigan. And then you have that tie that crazy thing that we've never seen before Brought to you. By the founders who thought the electoral college was such a great idea. And i i've been an election observer in a foreign country exactly once and the best you can do is say i didn't see any irregularities you know you can't you can't know what happened in every single voting spot in the country you write a little report in effect saying he didn't see any but if they ever told us oh by the way five weeks after you leave. We're going to have this other meeting. Call that electoral college. Oh well we can't sign anything then this. This is his outrageously anti-democratic. I watched elections in argentina shortly. New Travel Advisory Urges Californians To Stay Within 120 Miles Of Home
"Million Corona virus cases have been confirmed in California. 28,000 people have died from the virus since so much spread is connected to where we go. A new state public health advisory is asking Californians to avoid traveling more than 120 miles from their homes unless that travel is absolutely essential. And the state is also issued a new health order to try to ease the strain on overburdened hospitals. KPCC is Jackie 48 has more about that. The state's public health officer has ordered that hospitals in regions with few or no ICU beds postpone non essential surgeries for at least three weeks that covers every county in Southern California. Hospitals that have room must also accept patients from other facilities that have maxed out their intensive care beds. That's the case at Memorial Hospital of Gardena chief Medical Officer Kevin Metcalf says he has 30 ICU patients, but just 10 ICU beds were really trying to work hard with County E. M s. To stop sending ambulances to my hospital because I'm overcapacity triple the normal level, Whereas the hospital down the street may only be a 100% capacity. Under the order patients in southern California could be transferred hundreds of miles north just to get care for the California report. I'm Jackie 40, a in Los Angeles.

"Bed for at least 30 patients who need intensive or intermediate levels of care. Um, they shut their doors to all ambulance traffic for 12 hours. They're waiting 18 hours to get somebody into intensive care for people that are having trouble breathing. Um Memorial Hospital of Gardena, Calif. Running 140% of capacity. So they've got they've got their hands full. And they've broken records for 16 consecutive days. Or the number of patients a number of people in I C u L A County is getting it getting a bad 855295 66 100 Steve in Lake Tahoe. Hello, Steve. Hey, how you doing? Um, I just want to comment on that last story about the farm workers in California. Um I run farmers markets up here like we broke her produce all year long for the farmers. I heard that same story. I went to my farmers from Sacramento, Fresno to Monterey and asked him about that story and like no way they couldn't find workers. Freak over it with the regulations California's bringing on so that's really kind of a true story. I mean, yes, that they're gonna wait a minute. Wait a minute. So you're asking? You're asking the people that hired the farm workers? Is there a problem? Yeah. Well, guess what They're going to say, What do you think they're going to tell you? Personally go these farms. I have relationships of these farms. I used to work down in Monterey County in journalism for her star, Kyle. So I have a pretty deep rooted down there. I'd be on these farms for a long time. Well, okay, But have you been on them in the last 10 months? Oh, yes, yes, I've broke her produce I we pride ourselves on non where everything's that and let's face it. I am dealing with. I'm not deal with the commercial farmer. I'm dealing with the family farmer trying to get work there. A farmer's dream is a take their Where's the farmers? Look it. I have no idea how the farm industry works. I've never worked on a farm. I don't even know how to spell farm. That's how far away I am so but but I will tell you I've got loads of stories here about the number of cases and when you look at the data In California. Let me give you the latest data. This is from the California Department of Public Health. Number of people by race. Latinos, 875,000 Why? Yeah. 300,000. Black 63,000. Nobody comes close to the Latino cases in California. You know, and I hear that I do, um The only answer. Maybe they're the ones that wanna go The doctor more. I don't know. Um, right now you're not gonna get me in a doctor's office because I'm not going to be mummified and and and strapped it table. I mean, my wife, Brooke, that broke her leg during all this. Severely. And that was a nightmare to get you through surgery and thank God we're on the other side. But I mean, it was a joke. So I hear the Hispanic one. I'm on the farms. I'm a retired journalist. I grew up in Iowa. So I know farming e just like on. I'm laughing in these numbers because yes, I Yes, I do. The other smaller for males, not Marshall guys. But the commercial guys have a lot to lose with that story going out. So, uh, why would why would they have a lot? Why would they have a lot to lose? So somebody is working in your field. Then there and you, you know better than I do. That the seasonal farmworkers I'm not sure how the how the contracts work, but the story I saw. I think it was 60 minutes. Steve was saying these guys were absolutely they were afraid to not show up and go to work. And you know, I've been in him, you know about the housing conditions for the farm farm workers. Oh, yeah, I worked in Salina. Talk about crazy. Yes, complaining? Yes. Yeah, but let's talk about the roommate. Let us scared. That's just devastated Those big farms. Demonstrated the big Romain plants in Arizona. This is yes, but that was because of E. Coli. That was that was E. Coli. You know that. Yeah, that was from Porta Potties and practices that stove and changed. They still drink Porter bodies in these fields that legal right with a place in there, right? I hate to say it. It's look at me a problem. So yes, the Mexican I mean, we all have great work ethics, and that's probably the biggest problem with this whole nonsense. Is this panic them A great work ethic. So, yes, they're going to show up to work because they work very hard. And I like that..

Hungry Girl: Chew The Right Thing!
The Forgotten Favorites Episode
"Hey there. It's me Lisa. Lillian also known as hungry girl. I am super excited to be here for yet. Another episode of the chew the right thing podcast. How are you? Mike Jamie were good. How are you I am good less melty than I was over the weekend. It's finally cooling off. Fine a line. At least you didn't have a power failure in your house. That is so true. Thank goodness. But if you have a power failure, that's the best excuse to eat everything in the freezer. Is Facing. I was like Tonita everything well Mike. Kept telling me. Don't open the refrigerator or the freezer, so that was my reason, not to and little known fact. That's probably a known fact. I didn't know it. The CDC recommends that you can keep things in the refrigerator for up to four hours as long as you don't open the refrigerator, but after four hours with longer now I throw it all things so I think you can just never open the fridge. I, just like I remember when I, was a child in the power to go out and I want to eat everything. Like funny, it's funny I'm talking about a childhood memory because today's episode is all about forgotten favorites. It's just Retro Very Retro today which I like because I consider myself kind of retro person I feel like all of my like my sensibility, my style. My tastes are a little retro. So agree. Yeah, little, vintage vintage A. I. Don't I'll take that as a compliment. but we've got it all today. We have some tasting. We have a sponsor. We've got news. We have a rousing game of chew or false right. Columbus. I can't even believe it. I'm so excited so I think we should probably just jump on in. have. You heard of avocado milk now. Okay? Well, apparently, it's Jamie have you heard of it only because I. Go on. L.. Apparently, it's a big deal in New Zealand, and it's about to hit the US. The drink is ninety calories a cup and has made with oats, honey freeze dried avocado water and lentil extract and it also they also have a chocolate flavor along with the regular flavor, and the chocolate actually is also ninety calories. They just add cocoa to it. So, we gotta get ourselves some of this and try and try and house the fat content to. We know I didn't look grams per cup. North Bad. Okay now I would try the I trip told. It doesn't sound delicious to me, but I love trying new. Milk Products, and it's always good to check out a new chocolate milk swab, because that calorie count is pretty good so I will give it a shot, but not so excited, so this one is really more for your niece. Lauren and all the other begins out there. Have you ever heard of the Vegan? Hawaiian store called Veg, oh. Okay so it's. It's dubbed the Costco. For vegans and it's an actual story can go and pick up stuff now. It's going to be on the mainland by the end of the summer. It's going to be for delivery only so you order it on to kind of gambling. You ordered online and they they'll send out to you in I guess freeze packed. Boxes and they have every Vegan brand like everyone. I didn't have to name them all. They literally have every V and brand in the store. Oh, wow, that's really cool, so there's not going to be like an actual physical brick and mortar location. It's all online right it's going to be. They're gonNA. PUT Basically warehouses in the major cities, probably at first, and then like Amazon you'll order it, and they'll ship it out from those those warehouses interesting. Amazing I think that's going to be super popular now it's like that. Love it. There's a lot of actually vegan products. That was so funny I was just thinking like. I spend a lot of time. 'cause I am the ultimate carnivore, but I say now these days it's fifty fifty whether I reach for something. That's actually like an animal, product or something. That's made by Gardena or AMY's. That is just sort of a substitute and I love them both so I will be partaking true excellent. All right so we a sponsor this week and we have a good one. I love sponsored segments where we get to taste food and we're going to do that today, so our show today's brought to you by back to nature back to nature that sounds so healthy, doesn't it and fitting for today's episode back to you know? That's right, but this is not. It's actually not a retro ran. It's a very like hip and cool brand. That has a ton of stuff I was so excited I have to be honest about the portion control. Many chocolate chunk cookies that are incredible. They have cookies. They have crackers. You guys like Fudge Man I. Know Mike. You're like a mint. Fudge Mint Person, aren't you? Yeah I definitely love the the Mindy Fudgy things for sure said yeah, they have a fudge mint cookie. That's amazing. They have organic stone, ground, wheat, crackers, and I love the flax seed flat breads like they have these huge flat breads that are so crunchy and incredible. We had them. I think we had them at Hungary lamb for a while, and they were like everybody was just eating them like they were going out of style, which they are not there in style, but their new. New Protein crackers is what we're going to try today, so the protein crackers come in two flavors I have one flavor. You guys have another flavor and we're GONNA try them. I love them because they are made with P.. Protein pea protein is very hot right now, so these happen to be plant based and everything back to nature as plant based. I should start by saying that also so even their cookies right there Vegan right everything is plenty Everything's plant-based inspired by nature. Simple ingredients all right so. I'm going to bite into my We're GONNA. Try Wait. What flavor do you have because I have roasted garlic and Basil? Back to nature plant based PEA protein crackers. Would you have? I'm so excited. These are the whole lot of seeds, crackers, flax, Chia poppy and hemp seeds. They look so good and they're the big flat ones to which I like
