"You download your podcasts for now, I'm sure we're gonna be kicked off at some point. But for now, the oligarchs have permitted us to stay up there. You can also find me on Twitter at Michael J. Knowles. There is a story that if you are watching or listening to the mainstream media, you probably have not heard very much about. It is probably the biggest political scandal of the last year, and this has been a year filled with political scandals. It involves one of the most prominent members of the Democratic Party. That person is Andrew Cuomo. They call him quoted in New York. Andrew Cuomo, who is responsible. His policies are directly responsible for the deaths of many senior citizens in that state and even more senior citizens than We were aware of this is a scandal. It's kind of like Richard Nixon with Watergate. The scandal is both what actually happened. But then maybe even more. So. The cover up of what happened? Fortunately, ah, very good friend of mine for many years. Is an expert on this issue. He's seen it up close. He's the assemblyman for New York's 94th district. He's also ranking member of the health committee there in New York. That would be my friend Kevin Byrne. Kevin. Thanks so much for coming on. Michael, It's my pleasure. Thank you for having me. So, Kevin, you have seen this up close. I mean, forget about you know, being blocked out by the mainstream media. You're actually up there. You are dealing with these issues in real time. As an elected member of the New York State Assembly. What happened first, I want to get into what happened then I want to get into the cover up of what happened. Sure well, while the media was largely praising our governor as the hero of Kobe 19 earlier in the spring of last year, many of us were sounding the alarm about some very dangerous directives that got little attention in the media, namely a March 25th directed from the Department of Health that mandated nursing homes. Take Can cope in positive patients. They try to argue semantics that prohibited them from denying patients. It's the same thing is forcing them to take covert positive patients. The other thing was it prohibited the nursing facilities from acquiring a test. And you think you'd want enough? Oh, if someone was going at your facility, and they were, in fact, just with covert, or just make sure that they were they resolved the virus. That was a very controversial water that took place. It was in effect for over 40 days. A Zerlina as the end of April myself and now, congressman then Assemblyman Angel Garbarino called for legislative hearings after months of, huh? Hard work. We convince the majority to hold hearings in the middle of May, the governor rolled back that directive. If you ask him today, he would say, Oh, it's still not the director's fault. We overrode it with another directive. Thankfully, that at least change Now, but the hearings we were trying to get real answers about what was happening in a nursing homes. At the time, the governor was telling people that the Trump administration was doing everything. Long since day one, and we were doing everything right from day one. He was lauded all over the country as this, you know, expert on covert 19 and how to how to handle the coronavirus in your state. But what we learned was the data that the Department of Health shared publicly was misleading. Because they would give you fatality numbers, but it excluded those nursing home residents who contracted the virus in nursing homes went to hospital and died. Why is that important? Well, if you're going to do a study on analysis on how the state did handling inspires in nursing homes, you want to have a complete number two? No. Hey, did that directive do more harm than good? Peopie was an issue. We had nursing staff issues. All those types of things were important. The Department of Health came out with a white washed report back in July. Basically defending this March 25th directed it was a full front defense of the Cuomo administration again. What was missing in their analysis, the number of patients and residents of nursing homes that died in hospitals. Outside the facility. So we've been asking for that data. For months, I teamed up with Assembly college Republicans and even Democrats I've written to President Trump, the CDC. Even President Biden. Well, whoever we can work with to try to get this information disclosed it was not until earlier In January, the attorney general's office finally released its own report. Very little Democrat. Mind you, Tess James, which made it very clear. The Department of Health was under reporting these numbers in January. We're being told the nursing home fatalities in the state. Just so I'm not 1000 report said It was upwards of 50% being under reported Michael 50% 50% for thousands of people. For more than 4000. People that died from nursing homes getting this virus that we're not being analyzed reported, and it wasn't just shared with a match it with the public. It wasn't shared with our elected representatives in the state Legislature. We had good government groups like the Empire Center actually sued the state of New York. Violating foil and just this past week, they actually won that suit and the the Supreme Court in New York State is forcing the department health to release those numbers. Just this past week. Those numbers continue to go up when you start including, and don't care facility is it goes from 9000, then goes to decide 13,000. Now there's another report came out just yesterday. I'm looking at it. You add in a nursing home in facility nursing home hospital deaths and it's all care facility. Hospital deaths actually goes up to just shy of 15,000 people's lives lost almost 15,000 fatalities that puts New York at the very, very top. The entire country. Why is that important? That means while the governor was being lauded as this here for the coronavirus while the governor was lecturing everybody else in the country while he was shaming the federal government While the Department of Health put our report defending all the states policies they knew New York was doing Ah failed job in our nursing facilities that prevented people like myself from taking corrective measures. And it was the disservice to the people who lost loved ones in nursing homes, and it's it's important to point out here. I mean that that number is so huge 15,000 We had initially thought the number What might be 9000 we've heard. So now you're talking about possibly up to 15,000. I mean, you know any of you any of these numbers, they're really pretty shocking..

"Having this discussion with somebody yesterday Somebody of Christian Catholic and they were telling me that for them. Christmas Eve is the holiday. You know, Christmas is based on me, and we know that the birth of Jesus on Friday and that's That the holiday December 25th. But in their family Christmas Eve is the more important of the two days. That's when they get together. That's when they have the big dinner, which, of course, I've been over a million times with my family. I was silly Christmas party, but a lot of my friends that are not Say the same thing that the will. The will more important day for them is tomorrow more than Friday. I don't know That's a case with you know that it is a very festive good feeling the feeling of anticipation for Christmas days there. I always like that. But Christmas Day, of course, is is the the day is the reason for the season the birth of the baby Jesus his birthday, But you know, Christmas Eve is a special. I mean, it's it's a two day event is what it is, Which is, you know, usually go to church on I'm Christmas Eve. I'm not sure we're going to that man. So would be Christmas Day if you want midnight, but we don't do midnight. Haven't done midnight and years. Okay, we go. You know, eight o'clock, six o'clock, five o'clock, something like that. This year, maybe a different thing. My dad is down from upstate. He's already down supposed to Yes, is supposed to put my my son. He's very wonderful, young man that my son is they traveled up to. Ah, see Irish Alps and picked him up brought him down. And he's here now And so tomorrow. What we're gonna do is tape. The midnight mass at ST Patrick's Cathedral, Right, Gonna tape it That's gonna be on TV as the man she always every every year. I mean, midnight Mass and watch it home. US Christmas morning. We're gonna take it Watch a Christmas morning, and that will be our, uh, fulfilling our holy day of obligation. It's Christmas Day. That's great. I actually did Mass at ST Patrick's Cathedral. In fact, it was three weeks ago today, you know, weeks ago today, honey, I went there yesterday because we had to wait around for the covert tests. Did you light a candle? I didn't light a candle. I just walked in on. They had roped off the area where you go to Neil. I don't know if I can't do that, right? So I just went in you. No sign of the cross looked at the tree walk around. It was beautiful. And and by the way, Fifth Avenue, Saks Fifth Avenue is still playing music. It's gorgeous. I mean, if you go down early, if you get into the city early enough and get in and get out, I mean, there's nothing to do, but you can see the tree you can. You can experience ST Patrick's You can. I mean, there it is, ah thing that people can still do. But again, there's really nowhere to go to eat. Well, not to me, but what I would do is that I've done this is you go to ST Patrick's Cathedral? Uh, while at night time, it's much nicer Saks Fifth Avenue because the front of the store lights up in about 1000 different colors. Then you could go to the lovely palace Hotel right there on 50th Street off of Madison Avenue. That's open. Going to the coffee shop. They've got candy. Hot chocolate and coffee. You can't okay? You can listen, I try to get a sandwich outside of s a bagel yesterday. It's curbside pickup. You know, you could go into the hotel into the palace. Make sure you're wearing a mask. Walk straight to the back. It's a beautiful lobby. I mean, beautiful and on the right hand side is a coffee shop and they've got hot chocolate and candy. You can get yourself a nice drink. Take it back outside. Go see the tree. That's the cancer. You can't stay in so you can stay. Only the towers are open. They've actually closed floors one through 39, starting with the 40th floor. You may be the palace. It's open. You may be getting somebody in trouble, right? It's against against Cuomo's. No, It's not a lockdown rules. They actually I spoke to one guy yesterday to who runs the refinery hotel, which is a really cute little hotel on 38th and sixth He was told two days ago. Be prepared to shut down and it's over. And then when I spoke to him yesterday, his name is Taylor. He said that you know they're gonna be open, so I don't know what's happened over the last couple of days. We were told weeks ago that what if the Thanksgiving we're gonna get this second shut down, Everything's going to be closed. We haven't gotten it. And now I've got two different guys that work in major hotels in the city, telling me they're not going to be shut down. I don't understand. Like I said, right across the street, That's a bagel. I went to get on an egg sandwich. And it was curbside pickup wouldn't go inside. But that started with the snowstorm last week. That was the first day that that's a big deal. Really shut down. That was more about the snow storm. Not the shot that no curbside pick up all over the city. You were a smelly, You're not allowed to go inside. Cuomo also talked about not using bathrooms. You're not allowed to go inside the restaurant bathroom quarter to, uh, pick up the feud. It's It's gotta be a curbside. According to this cream, that's not about there's a plenty of restaurants and I still go to where walking tall but you can't use the bathroom. You can't do that. And even the days of Starbucks, remember Starbucks and always though, the big fight say we're like drug addicts and homeless people use that bathroom. Very compassionate people right now. You can't use the bathrooms either. So dirty bastards. What about the point drug addicts and want to shoot heroin in New York City? Where did they go? Now? That's a good question. I know where they go to Penn Station. Oh, God. The Lucerne Hotel. Yeah, probably living large. They don't need a place to go to the Pennsylvania Hotel across from pence a Shin Yu, who knows who knows his right 1 808 48 w A b c 1 808 48 92 22 the Congressman boy, He's got big shoes to fill. "But I am here to report the Countess finished. We believe we will be the winners. President. Trump has already said that he has one even though millions of votes were yet to be counted. The Biden campaign is feeling very confident, but we also know that President Trump is holding out hope that he is going to be the victor. But again, Biden right now has the edge as Faras what we're seeing with votes counted overnight. For example, in Georgia, the race has narrowed to just 18,500 votes that Trump has over Biden, and they're still roughly 90,000 to be counted and many of those mail in ballots. Are going to turn out to be democratic, their majority blue as Faras, Pennsylvania. That gap is also narrowing in Biden's favor, and that's because the votes that are left to be counted in Pennsylvania are in the Philadelphia area and the surrounding counties, which are all Biden strongholds. Donald Trump's campaign team has alleged voting irregularities in a number of states. International observers say there's no evidence of that. Professor Lawrence Douglas, who's a legal expert at Amherst College, says the Trump campaign is using different tactics in different states. In a certain way, they are talking out of their mouth in two different directions, anything a sense that they want the Counting to continue in Nevada and Arizona. Where could benefit them? And they basically want the counting to stop in any other state in which they think it is to their disadvantage to let it continue, So it's not exactly what we could say is a consistent position. We all know that. Okay? But you know, I like the Republican policies, and I am very, very disheartened by just the awful and unfair treatment that he's gotten from him. Because you know what? "Well, Peter King has served. His community is a constant for those 30 years. And his handpicked replacement, a sentiment Andrew Garbarino, and he's with us this morning and good Morning Assembly, man. How you Morning, John. I'm doing great. You know, to let two election working hard running through the finish line. How are you doing? I'm doing well and hope to send shining and you're trying to fill some Pretty big shoes. And that Congressman Peter King tell Oh, people in Long Island. Why they should vote for you to replace Peter T. Yeah, I made in the mold of Congressman King. I'm someone who's going to work with everyone and anyone to make sure that the constituents of the second Congressional District are taking care of Congressman 10 years 28 years. I fought in Albany for eight years, my constituents in the assembly and now I'm going to continue to do the same and produce for Long Island Want to get to Congress? That's why I have Congressman Kings full support. You know, President Trump is cleaned up a mess 13 from Long Island in congressional District, One with Lee Zeldin is and and congressional district to where you are now with the congressman King. Why would we want to go backwards? How did people Nestle feel? The people of Nassau and Suffolk. They they know what the lack of public safety. The lack of policing is. Like You said. I'm a 13 4 years ago, you couldn't open up a Newsday without reading about a murder or body found. You know Congressman King Congressman Zeldin they brought in President Trump. They brought in money for extra policing for anti gang task force They brought in money for after school programs. It not M. It's their team back on their heels. We haven't had a murder and I met 13 murder on Long Island over three years. You don't go back now. You we understand Law and order is very, very high on the list for national and suffering people. What else do you pick his hire? Ned list. Lower taxes. I mean, reinstating the soul tax induction is a huge issue. People talk to me about keeping taxes low. You know, we have some of the highest property actually have the highest income taxes. Right now in the country. You know, Joe Biden wants to raise the taxes on middle class people on DH. You know, Nancy Pelosi and Jackie Gorge will go along with that. You know, Jackie Gordon, My opponents only voted for tax increases multiple times in her position of the town councilman. Every time I've had the opportunity to vote against taxes in Albany, I have we have 30 seconds left. What else would you like to tell? For people of your district. I have fought for my constituents. 11 years in Albany under complete Democratic control. I'm going to continue to fight for the residents of the second Congressional District when I get to Washington, DC, whether it's lower taxes, public safety Cleaning up the great South Bay infrastructure spending Coben relief bill. Everything in anything I'm going to do is going to be for my constituents to make their lives better. Assemblyman Garbarino. We hope your congressman if I'd lived again. Are we voting for you and God bless you and God bless America. Thank you so much. John. Does your website or we go off. Barbara. It's www got Garbarino for y dot com. Garbarino four n y f o r n y dot com with us this morning is Nicole Manya Takis. Rand Familia now running for Congress in Brooklyn and Staten Island. Good morning on the coma, Attacking whose New York is going to be the criminals or the citizens? Well, John, I have every faith in the people that island in Brooklyn and I know they're going to vote for law and order. They're going to vote for public safety. They're going to vote to preserve the American dream. They're going to vote to make sure that we have a strong economy. So I feel real good that we're gonna win back this seat in Staten Island in southern Brooklyn. It's in a really classy, really loud message. A clear message to Mayor De Blasio's Alexander Khazar, Cortez and Max Rose that people start an island southern Brooklyn demand safety. And demand low taxes and demand a strong economy and really just want to preserve this nation, its history, its potential and its opportunity. What do you think? Besides law in water, which every New Yorker wants Democrat or Republican? We want law and order. What do you think The other major issues are in Brooklyn and Staten Island? Will I think, making sure that we restore the American jobs lost during Kobe that we get back to the low unemployment levels that we had under President Trump? We need to make sure that we lift these mandated closures off our small businesses. What we're seeing. People go on people getting in constant inspections and violations and find really crippling the small businesses. People are really concerned about that, making sure that we reopen, of course, safely, of course, putting health first, but we have that be wise and have a balance as well. They also believe that people want to stop this push towards socialism. And as you know, here in New York City, Alexandra Cozzi Cortez is gaining attraction in the sense that she picked up two additional allies. In his last cycle in the primaries and also six additional state legislative seat on DH. People see what's happening under one party Democratic rule they wanna have common. They don't wanna have you. Your tube in your mother is proven. Is that correct? And I remember what happened. I remember what happened Havana to my friends if they had a six room house, and they're only using one of the rooms for their bedroom. Castro would move in homeless people into the other five rooms. Is that correct? That's not that's correct. And also, you know, he confiscated small businesses. They there's no opportunity no potential in a country like Cuba and look at what happened with Venezuela, where the country has been completely dismantled. The richest nation in South America now destroy any of people eating garbage out of AA. Eating garbage to survive. I mean that that is the reality of what socialism and communism brings, and I believe that millions of Americans who fled from other countries Russia, Ukraine, Korea, China countries in South America, you know they are concerned with. It's scary to them. I mean, John look downtown Brooklyn. They were pinking, the communist symbol, the hammer and sickle on the windows of small businesses. No, that's scary for the people that fled those circumstances, and that is why we need to take a strong stand and get out the vote in this election and send a message that we're not going accept it well in the cold. My attack is, you know I love you and I'm endorsing you. And if I lived in Staten Island, Brooklyn, I'll be voting for you. And I think it's time for all people, Democrats or Republicans have to vote for you and send a single that New York is not for sale. We want law and order, and I think that's what New Yorkers want. It is time to end the era of career politicians and I want to go to Congress and actually get something done. Well, I understand that Sean Maloney boats 98% of the time with Pelosi is that correct? Actually with Speaker Pelosi. I e. The last two years he has voted with her 100% of the time has not a single vote. Yes, 100%. I mean, elected her if we want law and order in our country. And I've been very happy with this, You know, with the changes, But look, I expect President Trump won this district in 2016 1 of my two points he's expected to win it again is one of only 17 teach in the entire house. "This November. 1 of the most closely watched races in our area is on Long Island in New York Second congressional district. Republican Congressman Peter King has held the seat for 27 years. He's retiring at the end of the year. But recent demographic shifts have turned the district more blue in a Democratic victory there could help solidify the party's majority in the House of Representatives. Joining us to talk about this race is Newsday Politics reporter Scott Idler. Welcome to W N Y C Thanks so much for having me Tell us about district to where is it? And how have its demographics shifted. The second Congressional district cuts both Nassau and Suffolk County largely on the South shore over the years in 2012, there was a big redistricting. The district has more Democrats than Republicans and Congressman King has very strong. Bipartisan credentials. He's praised for that for bringing sandy money for bringing money after 9 11, so Democrats have been happy to vote for him over the years. But this open seat dynamic gives Democrats hopes and say, outnumber Republicans that it could swing Democrat and the area has a lot of diverse communities. Big African American community and wind and Hispanic community in areas such a central I slip and Brentwood, so we'll see how this plays out. Now Both major party candidates are new to national politics. Tell us about Republican Andrew Garbarino first. Who is he? And what is he pitching to voters? Sure, and you're Garbarino. It's an assemblyman from, say, Bill he has been in Suffolk County politics for a while. His father has how leadership roles he's the I flip Republican chairman. He's among dozens of Republicans in New York, criticizing Bell reform that was passed by the Democratic State Legislature and Governor Cuomo. Last year, and he has the backing of Peter King and the backing of Law enforcement union. So he's been putting advertisements up criticizing Democrats of trying to defund the police. So he's been in line with a lot of Republican messaging in New York. So let's talk a little bit about Democrat Jackie Gordon. What about her? Sure Jackie Gordon have been a Babylon Councilwoman. He's worked very closely with the Suffolk County Democratic Chairman Richard Schaefer. She's a retired U. S. Army reserve Lieutenant Colonel. And has experience as a guidance counselor. In advertisement. She has says. I've been too basic and I've taught yoga, and it shows her footage of her time in the Army. Does either candidate appear to have an edge over the other At this point, will. The cook political report classifies it as a toss up. Jackie Gordon has a major fundraising advantage. As of the first half of this year, she had $1.13 million in the bank. Andrew Garbarino had 100 for 1000. But we'll have to wait a couple more days to see if the numbers changed after the third quarter, but that's a pretty major advantage that Jackie Gordon had at the first half of the year. Two years ago, Peter King won reelection, but his Democratic opponent, Lyuba, Gretchen Shirley, came very close and, in fact got national attention for convincing federal election officials to let her use campaign donations to pay for child care. She decided not to run again this year is her replacement, Jackie Gordon, seeing a similar grassroots support. We don't know. Yet if she has the grassroots support, it's been tough to campaign. A lot of it has been virtual Luba. Gretchen Shirley had massive town halls, and it really did unnerve Republicans in the district. You talked about issues like health care and law enforcement. What else is at stake here in such a competitive race? This is a big deal for both parties. I spoke to Jay Jacobs, the state Democratic and Nassau County Democratic chairman, he said. This would be a great opportunity for Democrats to wide in their ranks and to have a more powerful loading block. For Republicans. There could be redistricting in two years. The state Senate is controlled by Democrats than the governor's office is controlled by Democrats so they could mess with The lines and having an incumbent helps Republicans. If there are any changes to the borders in two years, a lot of states Senate Republicans have been retiring. Ah, lot of Republicans on the national level have been retiring. So This is a big deal for Republicans to try to preserve their power on the island and in New York. Newsday Politics reporter Scott Idler. Thank you so much for joining us today.
