"Podcast bird doing a little livestream for Earth Day. Everybody playing with the three way video stream here after some technical funds we gotta going but we just wanted to have a chance to to get on and chat a little bit. Because it's the fiftieth anniversary of birthday and we just didn't want to miss it so You know it's not the best of circumstances in the world right now but I'll say is that a long standing event and so it was kind of looking over at her stay dot com as I look towards my my computer monitor here to see kind of what they've gone on that got actually Some virtual things going on today so you can actually tune in live. They've been going on. There's somebody talking right now But there are in the middle of their discussion. So I'm not sure what there is A. There's also some other events that you can kick -ticipant hand and you can check out some of the things that are a part of the Earth Day movement all around So that might be stop for earth. Day Tony Tony if you haven't been there yet which is a Earth Day. Outta work as Ram as we are well as we are winding down the day. So what have you been doing today? Bar I've been doing a lot because you know I work in the area. I was thinking about doing Earth Day stuff and been doing it a long time and on my fingers. I could list like more than fifty organizations. I know that are doing things. We had a whole celebration today. We're doing or days everyday. My geography students don't normally get a chance in the spring to do geography awareness. Week so I combine the two together and we're doing. Gis Day geography. Where he this week with an Earth Day theme And as a university we did a Lib Guide which is something I just found out about which is where you work with libraries to basically put all your resources up online and people can share it worldwide we made a repository of Earth Day events going on around the world and in our state and then we did a lot of citizen. Science listing because also citizen science weeks citizen science month. I've seen a lot of Australia for their citizens science because they're doing a lot of events but they also have a stamp to celebrate the people in their country that have contributed contributed to it. And then I was going through the list of other events because it is citizen science month on month in our state. We've got a box turtle count going on where you can go out in your yard now and you might not be able to go far. Be Can do a box turtle count. It's also the dark dark skies so with NASA. It's the international dark sky week to go out tonight and a bunch of states are competing countries are competing to go out and make their observations It's rails to trails week which I found really fit with urban geography the switching over from rails to trails and what that means and it's national volunteer week which goes along with citizen science and with geography and people doing crowdsourcing being asked to contribute. It is National Library Week. Which goes along again with all the geography in the books. In which books would you select? I actually will. I'd have to reach behind me but I'm donating a book to our library from someone that we interviewed here. It is Linda Garay Matthias and we talked to her geospatial team and so I wanted to do that because she always talked about how. We were all hummingbirds. You just do what you can what you can just adds up and I was thinking about the people that I've met met judge potter. He is considered the father of the environmental courts and we invited them to our state to try to figure out. Could we do that here? And it turned out. We couldn't but he came many times and what he talked about in terms was basically and he didn't realize it at the time with mapping was at a lot of things fall through the cracks. When you're talking about the small things with public health like the elderly that are having problems fixing up their houses or someone. That's selling over. And over bad baby food but the community notices. And if they're mapping it if they are tracking it then that helps to change things but that that's what I was you know thinking about and then Charles Moore. Who does the Great Pacific Garbage Patch going out there? In the fact that it was unknown when Earth Day was started but it was probably starting to accumulate at the time but now we know about it and we can do something about it so I guess what I'm saying is it amazed me all the little things that over time the little bits add up to big things an absolutely received that not in the best circumstances obviously With all of US hopefully Doing what we can to stay at home and things like that but you know images that are getting out there of how the environment is changing just in the few weeks and in some cases a couple of months where our behaviors have changed right. Were not as much moving around us. He's going on Whether it's satellite imagery or photographs footage that people have been taking it. You see the difference right in our impact on the environment in the earth. A just in that amount of time that you know we've all had to make strategic change to try to contain this this terrible pandemic but but I think that's a direct visual representation of really how we do impact the world this amazing to think we can see that now but they couldn't see that back then when this was going on at other times you imagine if they could have seen you know how it affected things changed in just the images of streets that are empty and stuff going on Jon. Snow would have had a lot different. You know experience if he could have viewed things that's true we'll sue stole my thing so I guess that's about it. It's kind of a wrap up for Earth Day. Two Thousand Twenty again. We're kind of coming at the end of the day so If you are curious as to what happened and I want to be able to get access to some of the recorded media had replaces dorte Earth Day dot org of course go ahead and start planning for next year whether we're talking about Earth Science Week in the fall geography awareness. Week a three weeks later and of course Earth Day next year for the fifty first and fifty first anniversary. I'm going to stop trying to talk. A- jump between the fiftieth and then the fifty first you might see a future movement that you know comes into play everyone's experiencing something together. I'm really hopeful that you know even though everybody's really worried about the economy right now that people do take into account what's been going on environmentally both in terms of animals. Kinda wandering Further afield being able to see things remote-sensing Hopefully people will be taking those into account as we do get things going again absolutely so so hopefully everyone out. There is doing well and You know we're doing what we need to now to make sure that we can all come out of this in and get a chance to go further field again so happier every day. Right every day yes yep..

"On. Garay's mother always had answers until one day her brother in Dari to Astra question she had no answers for. Why doesn't Gari go to school at the time? It was uncommon for girls to get an education especially in rural families. School was expensive. Girls were needed to help around the house. That was what one Garay's mother had done as a child but these did not feel as sufficient explanations for not sending her daughter to school so instead of answering her mother thought it through when Gari is a girl so what that didn't mean. She couldn't study so she found the money to pay for when Gary School and when Garis new adventure began. She was better at school that her brothers had been so. Her family decided that she should go to boarding school and get a better education school away from her mother and family. Would she feel lonely or bored? It was a big scary change but it was reeling to like walking through the forest dust when Gary Patrick. Three dresses in a small wooden box and off. She went boarding schools. Fun and when Gari became the best student of her class after primary school she was accepted into a good high school. Outside Kenya's biggest city in high school. She thought I will learn more about chemistry and biology. There is so much I don't know about plants and animals when Gordy graduated high school with flying colors and rushed home to enjoy.

Initiatives familia in those ambience. Earlier. Swift the inadequacy. Evo ski must sent this. Interim this guberntorable scheduling door in good. Get message gunman women this Lisa. What is that little sister dossier laptop zeal? J P Morgan began informing clients Thursday that it had shutting down banking brand thin. Fins closure is a quick about face for a product J P Morgan hoped would help lure in some new younger customers. Let's get more joining us in the podcast studio. Wall Street Journal reporter, David Benoit welcome back. Thanks forever. Of course. So I for those of us who didn't try it out. Can't now ask your date. I guess if you could I walk us through what Finn was because it was a bit of a digital hybrid. Right. Sure. So, so Finn would have been an online only Bank, so it would have been you, you download the app, and you go start in account in sort of like their various other options out there, right where you can transfer money in and out in get it only online really odd had some cool tools within about saving and some suggestions on, on how to use your money and budget. And then the, the extra the hybrid part here for for Finn was will you could also actually physically go to an ATM you go to a chase teller for some things and you could withdraw. In deposit money. And that's that was the big thing, you, there's a place where you could. You know if someone paid you in cash, or in check, which I think most people don't get millennials get cash. You could actually deposit it at an ATM and how it go into your county. That's a hard thing to do. Right. I guess it speaks to this shift, that's happening, obviously, especially younger people, they don't really finance the way the structure has been in place. So do we take this about face as big banks, having trouble circumnavigating this new space? I think everyone sort of experimenting a little bit in, in sort of testing things out. If Morgan certainly throws a lot of money around in technology in general, and I think he's willing to sort of drop things not work out the way they thought Jeep Morgan seems to have learned some things from, from their interactions with with Finn customers about and they've at the same time been improving their standard chase mobile app and expanding their branch network. And they just felt like we don't need this other. Brand over here. It doesn't mean they're going to stop trying to get millennials on their app in and you can actually now open up chase account, whether or not you have a branch near you. So there are other other ways they sort of trying to do it mentioned, how they're sort of a big player in this space. And there is such a aggressive spending on this kind of tech, our rivals faring as they try to restructure their whole being as well. Yes. So chases like one of the largest deposit banks in the country, they're second, most branches and deposits. So they're a massive organization. They touch him one into households what they talk about. Which is why they're allowed to sort of try this thing out, and then kind of quickly folded back into perspective. There are lots of other things Goldman Sachs's trotted out this Marcus checking and savings account, which is the difference between it and Finn was, we'll one didn't have that physical location. We talked about, right? But to Marcus and Goldman are paying you an awful lot of interest right now. So your money is making money for you. And that is a huge draw in his doing pretty well. We think with millennials. There are other options from places like acorns, which is, you know, building up trading in, in other ways investing, they're adding checking accounts on top of it. Everyone sort of trying to get at young people in how they use money and deposits in deposits is the key here for all the banks because they take your deposits, turn them into loans, which is where they make profit. I think that's a good note to end on David, thanks so much for the time. Thanks for having me. For more on the digital banking app world, you can head to wsJcom and followed David Benowitz coverage. That's it for the tech news briefing from the newsroom in New York. I'm Tanya boost does. Thanks for listening.

Johnny said you had money problems until you're in your forties. What do you tell us? How your life was back? Then. Well, my life was pretty rickety and pretty looking for the freebie, and I was living in a converted garage. I was making like fifteen hundred bucks a month driving a car with no grills. There was lots of duct tape involved in my life things like that. You were having financial problems because I refuse to focus on making money. I thought that meant you were a dirty moral free person. And I was also very attached to the idea that I sucked at making money. And so I had to prove that every day, you know, subconsciously wanna look into those a little bit more down the road, but how did your childhood shape your view of money? I, you know, once I started doing all of this work on myself, one of the biggest discoveries. I made that was one of the most just elaborating things was I realized that my dad he one of the ways he showed love and attention to me was to hand me a twenty or helped me financially, and when I started digging deep into the reasons that I was blocking my own financial success. I realized that I felt deep down that. If I got wealthy. I'd be basically stabbing. My dad in the heart. You know, by stopping his, you know by not needing him anymore, but you know, not needing his twenty bucks anymore. You went to India, and that started to change your life. Tell us about that. India was my first really big solo trip. And I don't even know why why I really didn't know that much about accepting that was on the other side of the planet. And and I was Sarah fide to go. I was determined to go, but I was terrified. I just had this image of myself as little dot they could just puff, you know, disappear in a puff of smoke. Nobody I loved have any idea where I was. And I woke up every night a couple of weeks before going freaking out. But for some reason, I was at the international terminal of the airport, and I ended up going, and I just remember stepping into the airport all my fears slipped away, and I was so excited and it felt one hundred percent, right. And I ended up having this incredibly just wild wild adventure. And when I got back I thought that you know after seeing. What I saw over there. You know, how some people live and the poverty that I would be so grateful for my little crappy garage that I was living in but what happened? Instead was I had faced this huge fear of mine and had this incredibly enjoyable experience and expanded my belief in what I could do and I moved out of the garage. Very shortly thereafter. I didn't you. I didn't get the confidence from going being part of a band and working the music industry to becoming a self help. Guru. First of all, I don't think I'm a girl. But thank you. I because I was such a train wreck. I mean, we all get interested in things that have to do with ourselves, basically. And I became obsessed with what the hell my problem was especially around money. You know, why was it that no matter what I did. I just could not get over this money stuff. And I was always broke and always whining about money and never having any. So the transformation is self help for me happen because I just dove into

Gory dot com slash WSJ magazine or call six four six seven eight zero eight three eight three. This is tech news briefing. Im Tanya boosts does reporting from the newsroom in New York. Today's question do air pods. Make you look rich, or at least cool probably because as the journal looks into what is taken over as the luxury item for younger people air pod had phones remain everywhere and show, no signs of stopping more. So than beats headphones or a slew of other better sounding ear wear yet that which resembles crystallized globs of sweat dangling from your ears. We have WSJ's Jacob Gallagher to thank for that. Pinterest has stopped returning search results for terms relating to vaccinations, which is a drastic step aimed at curbing the spread of misinformation. The explosion of the expensive yet attainable. Air pot headphones remains in full force. It is the luxury item of the moment shows, no signs of stopping. Why do you suddenly feel out of place? If you're not forcing white plastic into your ears. Let's find out joining us in the podcast studio with more is Wall Street Journal reporter Jacob Gallagher. Welcome. Hi, welcome. Thanks. So when it became clear air pods weren't going anywhere. We actually talked about it on the podcast because it was emerging as this fashion statement and this status symbol of sorts. And it was a new phenomenon that we were just kind of accepting. We're like, we don't get it. But it's sticking around whatever. Now, it's sort of like, not only are we accepting it, but it's become this. This thing that we embrace an inspire to how do you think this happened? They can happen. I'm glad you mentioned that, you know, airports were kind of a slow burn because they you know, they released about two years ago roughly now, and when they first came out. It was kind of the joke was that. They looked weird and they were kind of funny, and then people got them and said, oh, the sound quality is really great, and they're amazing, and blah, blah, blah. And they kind of went along like that for a while. And then sometime around last Christmas just prior to that around the holiday you saw I I started observing online. There was a lot of jokes going around that were basically predicated upon the idea that air pods made you look rich and made you look wealthy, and they were a very conspicuous item which made it kinda easy for them to be Mimi fide, and and for jokes to kind of ping around the internet because everyone knew what they looked like and you can kind of play with the visuals of them, but it's just this prevalent joke now that doesn't seem to be going away amongst like teens and twenty somethings and even thirty somethings about like, yeah, I have air pods. I'm rich and wealthy and they're kind of a new status symbol in that. I have to say even myself. I was a late adopter. And I it did change my life. And I have to say, I'm almost snobby about it. I'll be like oh, look at that person. Wired to like how how can it be? But yeah, like you said there's a mean for any everything. And it's because it's so relatable. Because there's there's I mean the internet comes through off the spoke to this kid who came up with like, I think it was. I wanna get the verb is right. But he was it was like just got airports than Bill Gates has called me this morning to go to a meeting for the one percent like being wealthy. Sure. As tiring like just like, the ones that were hard division is in the story where you know kids putting an image on and then being like it smells like poor in here. No one has has air pods. Like, they're they're they're they're very cruel out of the time. Yeah, they're kind of in that in that that part of humor. But these kids really, you know, it was funny because I keep saying kids a lot of the people I spoke for the story where in high school were in college, and you know, talking to them they were saying like this is really translated over into their actual lives. And, you know, people around their cafeteria or amongst their friends will say, you know, oh, look at our rich. I am I have. These and it it is a very funny thing. It's kind of weird reframing of what a luxury item is air pods are expensive. But they're not the most expensive head funds for sure. And right. Well, that's what kills me is because you know, someone who works in audio. I'm actually a very forgiving audio file. But I must say they're they're not even that good. Is what's funny about it? But that goes to show it doesn't necessarily matter because it's just it's the it item is your, and it doesn't it's keeping with what's cool. I think at this point. Yeah. Someone I spoke with mentioned that they reminded him that they were like sneakers sneakers with other thing in his high school with the kids kind of talked about like that. And it does kind of there are a lot of parallels. There like, you know, Nike's the hottest Nike's might not be the quote, unquote, best shoes, whether for you know, athletic purposes, or how they're made or what have you, but because of their, you know, desire ability, and and they look cool. They become this item that people. Really want air pods are basically treated the same way. It's interesting that we're at this age where a headphone in one that's basically the size of like two tic TAC stack together comfortable and not and not that comfortable. Yeah. Are are. You know, you know, they're the big thing. It's very funny. Do you? And I'm just curious because I know we don't have official numbers. But is there anything that? We can just look too says. Yes, this is really true people are getting these massive amounts. Well, there was I was getting a lot of Antic data from people. I was interviewing they were saying like, I've noticed a lot more my friends buying them, blah, blah, blah. And I was trying to figure out a way to to figure that out. And though as you said apple does operate down data for air pods. I if you look at Google trends over time, which is kind of the the search engines in house popularity measure air pods really started to spike in that like late November of last year early December period, and they've really only continued to to be popular. I think that their peak of popularity seemingly was like a week or so ago, so it still enduring an. And people have really continued to me it. And now, there's even this like next layer of me m- that is about how people have air pods, and they can't hear. So they're going to get hit by trucks. It's really confusing to but there's like as with any viral Meam. There's just becomes these added layers. And you know, it just goes to show like, you know, young people are really inventive. And they really put their heart into this. And a lot of energy. And it's pretty funny. Yeah. They're they're very dependable. And I encourage anyone to go down a rabbit hole. And check it out. That's what I did take. Thank you so much. Thank you. That's it for the tech news briefing reporting from the newsroom in New York. I'm Tanya boost does thanks for listening.
