Yeah, they got smoked by Atlanta on their own court. So It's all what you choose to believe and how you try to interpret it. But game one on Thursday night, obviously I was there Tremendous atmosphere tremendous experience and It was just an outstanding performance by Denver it was a Largely drama -free complete execution of their opponent And it was done in very nuggets II type ways Which is to say it wasn't their best player going out and dominating from start to finish It was a combination of things you had Aaron Gordon scoring 12 points in the first quarter You had Jamal Murray Scoring 26 points on 22 shots Michael Porter jr Who did not shoot the ball well 5 or 16 but finding ways to impact the game in other ways I think he had what 13 rebounds two blocks? Yeah a couple of blocks not a guy not known for his defense played pretty good defense on the perimeter when you add Max streus go 0 for 10 and Caleb Martin go 1 for 7 Miami's is not gonna win a lot of games when those two guys are shooting like that And then when they needed somebody to take over the game in the fourth quarter when Miami made kind of one of those Quasi runs to cut the lead to 9 at one point you had Jokic take over and he had 12 points in the fourth Then was just dominant You know I thought this was the game Rohan that Miami needed to steal to have any chance to win the series They had to win game one Denver was off for 10 days. Miami was sharp coming off that series against Boston I'm sure a little tired from that as well, but you know This was their chance in my opinion to to get a game and and it didn't do it They didn't do it because Denver continues to be just elite They continue to be the best team in the NBA. So that was kind of my takeaway. You saw the Nuggets Just be the Nuggets and be the team. We've seen really since the start of the second round of the playoffs What did you see? Yeah, you know, I picked Denver to win this series in five and this kind of confirmed game one at least confirmed Why it's just they execute at such a high level That Even when Miami for example, you mentioned they make that quasi run in the fourth quarter and it's is Denver a little threatened Just feels like the Nuggets can get a good shot on offense Whenever they really put their mind to it and that's the feeling I got in game one You know the heat in the fourth quarter turned up the defense a little bit Jokic sat for a few minutes But I just saw Denver through three quarters, especially Executing at such a high level offensively They have so much talent and so many different ways to hurt the heat You mentioned Aaron Gordon taking advantage of switches in the first quarter kind of dominating the pain against smaller Miami players So then Miami says okay, Jimmy Butler's saying on Aaron Gordon We're not gonna give up the switch that leads to defensive miscommunications elsewhere You have other guys getting to the rim getting to the three -point line You mentioned how this was a game Miami was supposed to steal even with the heats three -point shooting struggles They outshot Denver from the three -point line.

And this time we're learning that Mohammed bin Salman, the Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia, threatened to ties cut and inflict economic pain on the US amid a feud over oil production. John Hudson covering this for Washington the Post, and he joins us now on Northwest News radio. John, when were these threats made and remind remind us of the state of the US Saudi relationship at that time? Yeah, so these threats were made fall. last What was going on was a very important, it was a very important for energy prices. Essentially, the Saudis had decided to cut ties and inflict economic pain. And the United States was already facing very high energy prices, as were everyone else in the world. President Biden was furious at the decision and he vowed to impose consequences. Now at the time, the Saudis were just very politely defending themselves and defending the decision to slash oil production. But behind closed doors, the Saudi Crown Prince threatened to fundamentally alter the US Saudi relationship and post significant economic costs on the United States if it did retaliate and even cut off ties. Interestingly, the United States decided not to impose any consequences, even though the president would do so, or at least said he would do so. When these threats were being made, is it clear Who heard the Saudi Crown Prince make these threats? Was it directly to President Biden's face? It was not to Biden's face. Right now it's unclear whether or not the Crown Prince directly conveyed it to US officials or if it was intercepted through electronics eavesdropping. This is a classified intelligence document that was the basis of our story. Or oftentimes, the US intelligence community eavesdrops on important foreign government officials and in order to better inform our officials in government and so it's unclear in what way this is going to be. But intelligence officials thought it was important enough to flag it internally inside the US government. When to threaten to cut economic ties with the US might lead someone to think okay, maybe they waiting have someone in the wings for Saudi Arabian money and oil. How is Mohammed bin Salman approaching other nations like China for example? Yeah, well, this is why managing the US -Saudi relationship is so difficult because the United States also doesn't want to give China a stronger foothold in the Middle East. The Chinese have had growing ties with the Saudis and other traditional US allies in the Middle East as China becomes a bigger and bigger consumer of oil. And so what the United States wants to make sure is that the Saudis do not become a sort of security partner with China. We know they're going to be an economic partner, but they've been traditionally a US security partner. So that would amount to a significant change. Now, of course, human rights advocates have said, hey, maybe we should have a significant rupture with the Saudis. This is not a democracy. They don't share our values. And it seems to be hypocritical when the Biden administration says human rights is at the center of US foreign policy. So all these decisions are being weighed by the US officials on whether or not to bring the Saudis closer the US to or keep them at an arm's length distance. Over in the NHL, it was game one between Florida and Toronto and John leatherbee has the details. Butler, Heat start 2nd round with 108-101 win over Knicks
"That he got hot in the second half and defeated the Knicks one O 8 one O one in game one of their Eastern Conference semifinal series. New York was up 61 53 early in the third quarter, but Miami went on a 21 5 run to take command of the game. Gave Vincent played a key role scoring 20 points including 5 three point field goals. It's one game. I don't want to put too much on it. It's nice to get the first one. You always want to get one on the road, but we'll go from there. Oilers advance to second round with 5-4 victory over Kings
"The oilers defeated the kings in game 6 by a final of 5 to four to win the series four games to two. Edmonton star Connor McDavid, who scored the game's first goal, is glad to be moving on. I mean, game 7, you just never know what could happen. You'd like to avoid it at all costs, but to get it done here is really big. Kyler, Yamamoto netted the game winning goal with three O three left in the third period and steward skinner stopped 40 shots in the Edmonton nets. The oilers will now face Vegas in the next round. "The Vegas golden knights beat the Winnipeg jets four to one to close out their first round series in 5 games, Mark stone had a three point night with a goal in two assists in the series clinching victory. Heat's Herro undergoing surgery, likely out until NBA Finals
"Miami Heat guard Tyler hero says he will undergo surgery Friday for his broken right hand and likely won't return this postseason unless his team wins the Eastern Conference title the 23 year old guard injured his hand Sunday while diving for a loose ball late in the second quarter of the heat's one 31 17 victory over the top seeded Milwaukee Bucks in game one of their Eastern Conference first round playoff series. We were able to get started time we started when we needed them. Consecutive stops in a row, which led to fast breaks, led to easy buckets. Out west, the kings were beaming again, lighting up the warriors one 14 one O 6 as the air and Fox scored 24 to put Steve Kerr's defending champions in danger of becoming ex champions. We know we have to play better. But we will play better. We're these guys are champions. You saw what they did. It was a good playoff night for kings as the NHL's Los Angeles kings came from behind to stun the oilers four to three in game one on Alex I have follows overtime gold. It took two overtimes for the wild to beat the stars in Ryan Hartman's goal. The bruins said in NHL regular season record for victories and Boston started the postseason with a three one victory over the Panthers. Brad marchand scored what turned out to be the game winner. It's always good to start the first game with a win, but we have an accomplished anything yet. The hurricanes took advantage of home ice to stop the islands due to one in their game one. 25 stays for auntie ranta. Fun to play these games again. Just super excited and getting that home crowd going the baseball at the annual patriots day, morning game in Boston, former Red Sox hunter Renfro got the angels off early with a first inning three run Homer, then drove in another run in the second inning in a 5 four angels victory. Nick, Foles being hurt or whatever. We don't know that he's hurt. He's just not practising. So whatever is going on with Nick Folk right now is a part of the equation. If he's not ready to go. He's not ready to go. Maybe they, you know, maybe they cut. Nate to return or Dean and then bring full back to start the season. Something like that, just to buy nordine some time, but I'm a full-on kicker competition right now. And this is all because Nick Folk isn't playing. I think if Nick Folk was healthy or able to go last night. They put him out there, nordine doesn't get a shot. We don't see nordina on the preseason. They bury them practice squad and we revisit in 20 22. This is why availability is the best ability. This is why people who work in sports are terrified to take days off because Quinn Nordin came in and he Tom Brady, Nick Fox Drew Bledsoe. That's what it looks like. He's doing right now. Yeah, exactly. It's not there. All the way the extra points something they're going to look at he has to home. That's just one mess. That's his work. Best for the preseason. I think in their eyes, he's got a hit every extra point from here on out every field goal within 40 from here on out. Go out there and make the three kicks that he made last night, but I don't, we shouldn't lose sight of the fact that Nick Folk was very, very good for the Patriots last year. But with that being said, as you mentioned, Alex availability is the best ability. And if Nick Folk is legitimately heard, then there's nothing to talk about here. Right? It's it's already over because Nick Folk's not going to be ready for the start of the Season or something like that. So there's a lot of elements to this but I definitely don't want to lose sight of the fact that Nick Folk was a very good kicker for the Patriots last year and you never truly know what they were Okie kicker until you get into the season with them. And this is a team that tends to lean more towards veterans to inexperience. So you have to log, For that in as well as yeah, that's a good point. Well, that, that about wraps it up there, a solid hour and 25 minutes. Plus, Atlas is now sleeping. You finally quieted down allowed us to finish out the show here? Tomorrow. "I'll pull the numbers up. I looked up his historical. Yep. Which to see the last time he did that and I just got to scroll through a couple of things here, but I will give you the numbers here. They are so 2015. So he really didn't play defense. He played 106 name, over three seasons, his first years in Arizona, 10096. And then he played 442 7450 that's in each year from 2015 to 2017,. So he you know, he played about a quarter to a half of their the Cardinals defensive snaps during that stretch. Basically, it rotational outside corner, which is what the Patriots need. And then putting him out there last night on a night where a lot of special teams guys didn't play, Matthew Slater, Brandon Bolden, they're trying to get him ready to play boundary corner and I don't know that he's the the be-all end-all answer. It might be more of a break glass in case of emergency key might be the same. He might be the Johnson. Bademosi of this team is. I think it's a little more than that. No, I think it's a little more than that. Oh, I really do. I hope you're wrong. Wrong wrong. I don't think it's it's obviously not the best answer. But if they can't add somebody externally or steps, not ready to come back. Because remember, even if they, you know, even what if both, if both those things don't happen, even if one of those things happens, you still need to fill the third cornerback spot. So what I saw last night and it wasn't a ton of snaps, I think he played like fifteen eighteen snaps of two or three drives. I think we've seen in practice to he's been out there. I think they're trying to get Justin Bethel ready to play outside corner in case they need them. That's not good. And look he's fine at it. He's decent at it. I actually, you know, I was kind of surprised when she came here and they didn't use them out there as a depth guy more. I thought he could handle a small roll out there, in addition to special teams, but they, they, they were doing it before and you're doing it now, that that indicates to me that something's wrong, something's wrong because Joanne will not that he was all laughing. Like, like, you said, sorry, Justin Bethel made a really nice play Early second call log. I think it was early second-quarter. Yeah that quarterback ended up writing scrambling for on a third-and-one. He ended up scrambling for a first down. But Justin Bethel was falling underneath a vertical Corner out and it was a it was sort of a bootleg action type of play and the Crosser was coming from the back side. And the Crosser was open and the quarterback went to go throw the processor and Justin Bethel peel off the corner route, pass it off to the safety and jump across or enforce the quarterback to run with the football. And I said, oh that that's a pretty good play by Justin Bethel, you know, you just write those types of things down. You should see what happens there with that. But John Williams is still, I think a little bit of an issue. I really liked what miles Bryant did last night. Yeah. He was a game. We played a lot of deep middle of the field, safety, and the concern that I had with him playing back, there was length, right?.

"He hasn't really been able to get a ton of live rep. So somebody like am definitely needs more live reps because Henry Anderson gotten, plenty of live rep. So I think you missed one practice, but he's played plenty of live, snaps and Training Camps. So I think that's correct. Element of it as well. You mentioned Henry Anderson playing late into the game. He played Seventeen snaps overall. So it's not like he played at times, not like he played for snaps in the game or anything like that. But I thought I'd the I've got Henry Anderson's look great in the in the padded practices. I think he has a good speed to power. I think it's got a nice inside countermove and one-on-ones that we see come out a lot. I think he's got decent physicality long run. I thought he's been a really good player in practice. So I was really surprised to see him out there for that long. You mentioned that maybe is just learning the defense right? And getting live reps to get the knowledge defense down and and and the framework of it down, but I was definitely shocked to see him out there that long. Yeah. Yeah, I again I was too and I I don't hate Bob's explanation that it, they just he wants more time to get comfortable with the defense and the coaching staff. Applied. Should, I don't think that that's too, outlandish. I really can't think of anything that makes more sense than that. And again, even if that was the case off. He could have had those snaps earlier in the game. So that that one's a little weird not something to to keep an eye on because I think you know going back to Mike Pennell. We all thought Mike Pinella was a lot, right? People talk about him being this great outfit and then I remember eating, you know, just from the beginning, it didn't work out and I know that Anderson's there, but we've seen it happen right? Before defensive tactics. Now, is not the only one. I can't think of any others, you my head Pony, Eliza going one and this has happened a lot at that position in particular with the Patriots were, it just doesn't click with the system and it's not just guys they signed. I mean, my gosh, well, everybody knew he was good at the majors are going to sign it before they signed him and he was the same thing even before the Jets cut him. There were people. I mean, like, like people who know, I think you were one foot faulting you for this cuz I know I brought Henry Anderson was a fit for them for a year. People were saying from the jump. Oh, he's going to get cut by the Jets. He's going to sign with the Patriots. Like this is a guy who was already penciled in as a patriot before. He was a free agent. No, it was the same way. I don't remember as much as Kony Ealy, but, you know, because we've seen that before and I like to say this, all the time, Bill Belichick, you do something as long as he has patterns are going to develop you look for patterns. You can kind of start to predict with the Patriots are going to do. Here is a pattern. Let's see how it plays out the pattern of players. And we can continue to talk about this, as we move backwards into the secondary off, the pattern of players playing late into preseason games for Bill. Belichick always spells, not good things for the player, right? Like that. He is very rhythmic about things like that. But these guys, the only guy that I can remember that played, don't you remember what Jason McCourty was playing in the fourth quarter? That was weird..

"Outside Jammu gets inside and hits the quarterback and enforces an incomplete pass. So you have the tackle-for-loss dropping into coverage rushing, the pass or complete package last night from Matt, June. 12 snaps in. You're already saying, wow, that guy can really play football. Yeah, he was excellent. And then we had that whole roller coaster where maybe he was hurt, and he came right game and whatever he again. You see the picture coming together with Kyle, Van Noy comes in on one side. Stands up that block, it forces the whole line to kind of over shift. Gives Jude on room. In the back door. He comes through makes the tackle when they sign the contracts in March exactly what they were pictured picture and you see it in practice, right there in the game right there. You see that? Then put it into practice right there. It's a beautiful thing. It was he was an absolute Force. How about Josh J 3, quarterback pressures for all her. He's but you saw some of that explosiveness, you blew up by the backup, left tackle for Washington on one rep. I posted that on Twitter, just wage continues to be very explosive athlete when he's out there a little bit on the line, a little bit off the line, doing some of those different Dante, Hightower type of things. Like he mentioned a few months ago that he wanted to be like Hightower a, New Jersey. See, not necessarily the power at the point of attack and the physicality that Dante Hightower brings the table, but certainly the versatility to a degree for a young player who Jane looks like he's going to be home. I started if and this is this is a myth cuz last night it came up again every single time he gets some momentum. The guy seems to get nicked up with something Friday. It's right then pulled hamstring in a bank or whatever the case may be. But when you die, excuse me, when she is out there. He's fantastic but he's gotta stay healthy. He's going to have to stay in one piece. Yeah, I think the big and he and he said last night, he was feeling, I think the exact order was fantastic after getting a little banged up himself, a smile on his face. He was right. Yeah, the big thing for him with me. We talked a lot about this in the weeks, leading up to sneak up that one of these depth Edge, guys, was going to have to place the middle linebacker to stick on this to not necessarily to stick on the team. But to you know, find the snaps will really get a chance to have a real role on Thursday. Fence and we saw Joshua. J. Playing some Mike linebacker last night and I thought maybe that would be Chase. Winovich. Obviously. He's not out there right now. So it looks like it is going to be that guy. I think it's a role. He can handle it in that. That that's a good development..

"One of those moments where it was, they signed that guy to go out there and make the exact thoughts. Zach play and there's been cases over the last few years, but they sign a guy or they draft a guy for you know to fill one specific role in that guy doesn't ultimately go out there and fill that role, you know to kill Harry Bosch and Williams right under. Looks like he's going to fill that exact role in that. That's freaking exciting. I'll tell you that. I thought the whole day he got called on him too was a little bit ticky-tack. It looked like it was kind of a d, a m, a Savvy move by Chase young to keep Chase down kind of grabbed jaanu a little bit to make it look like it was he was holding on to him as Damien Harris. Ran off the edge there a little bit that play though that you mentioned it. We've seen that play a thousand times already out at training camp, right? John is Smith shallow, drag route coming across the formation, throw it away from the defensive rotation. Hit him in stride. Let him run with it down the sideline. We we've already seen that. At least I would say a dozen times maybe even closer to 20 times in Training Camps. So I wasn't surprised at all to see him do that. We haven't really seen them tackle. I've necessarily in training camp all the way to the ground quite yet. So it was obviously great to see him pick up those yards after contact. But exactly what we were expecting out of Johnny Smith. The running back. I I think the two running backs, a matter of the most bring up one more tight end point. I'm just curious what you get for this. Matt lacosse was the second tight end of the field when they went in 12 early in the game him over Asia Asia, and I I think Assi Assi just being a top 100 pick a year ago. I think it's going to make it makes it really hard for them to get rid of them. I don't think they can carry for tight ends, especially if you know, both, Lacoste and Asti Asti her a little redundant..

"Goes single hi and the single Hai. Safety is 12 yards off the line of scrimmage cuz they're crowding. The line to play The Run Nelson. Agholor has to be able to win a one-on-one matchup down the field and get open deep and create those explosive place. He did it with the Vegas, Raiders. Last year. He was one of the best deep-ball receivers in the league on a statistical basis, right? So he's done it before in the league at a high level in that regard. And he's going to have to bring that to the Patriots. What do you make about Christian wilkerson's night. That's your boy. How did you feel the the pet pass in the end zone? The depot would like to see them be able to finish through a little bit of contact there and make a play on the football but it was good coverage by The Defender as well. And it was a it was a tough. It was probably a 37 tee ball right for Christian will dream. He could have got it. I thought he he fought the ball a little bit more than he was in practice. Right? I didn't really think that his hands were a huge issue in practice 9 a.m. I thought his hands were a huge issue necessarily last night, but it did seem. He did seem to be fighting it a little bit more last night than what we saw in practice. Yeah, I, you know, I keep going back to me if he makes that catch both him and Mac Jones. What's the gas station like today? Okay, pants are off. But no, I, you know, I thought he was good again. I'll kind of go off what I said about nikhil nikhil not getting targeted. Is that an issue of the trust with the quarterbacks Wilkerson off targets? He's clearly somebody these quarterbacks like throwing the ball to I think he looked good after the catch, which is you know, he's going to have to win in that sense. When if and when he makes the team and if and when he's off of the offense, so I you know, I I'm not over-the-top about it. I don't know that. I feel like he gained any ground. I don't think he lost any ground because that drops going to be the lasting image. And that's just for the outside observers. I'm sure with Bill Belichick in the coaching staff as well. That's going to be the lasting image, but outside of that place. I thought he played well, I thought he more or less did what he needed to do. Nothing more than that. Nothing lasts so long. Answer until week to with him. I think is kind of where we're at it. And I didn't learn too much somebody to other takeaways from Christian Wilkerson, one, the opening kickoff of the game, number seventeen's out there as a gunner on the kickoff team, right? And he looked at that and he'd say that's those ten guys. Plus Jake Bailey that take the field there. That's their number one unit for kickoff coverage and crash Wilkerson was right there, right? So that that's all the things that we talked about the other day, about his special teams contributions. They clearly already view him as a regular special teams contributor. And if you remember what I've been trying to tell you, right? When when Jonathan Jones first made the team, right?.

This was a pretty chalked game for the Patriots. I sort of feel like the song is played, when we expected them to play, where they, we expected them to play outside of maybe some exceptions on the defensive line, if we're going to get to here in a bit, but for the most part, it was kind of a job. For Bill Belichick in the Patriots and we didn't get too many curveballs. Like, you know, Matt Jones obviously didn't start over Cam Newton or, you know, whatever the case maybe write a wide range of playing over Jacoby Myers or something crazy like that, right? Yeah. No, I would like to point out. I absolutely nailed the quarterback situation when my Verizon up on the back. Go ahead. What was it on Tuesday that we do honor, where we on Wednesday, that it would be came to him for a Sears or to Mac Jones from the end of the first through Midway, through the third and then Hoyer. But I think that basketball fans in general have a lot of respect for his career, his accomplishments and the fact that he did all of that without ever getting to an NBA finals until year 16 and something that's even more remarkable is that the way he's taking care of his body the way he's able to continue to play at the High level, including 73 points in the last two games, had that 41 point performance to close out. The Clippers followed it up with 32 last night. That's the most points he's ever had in two games back to back in his career. It's unbelievable that he saved to this stage to be able to pull that up. But it's not just about Chris Paul when it comes to the Phoenix Suns. First and foremost, it's about Monty Williams, the head coach, and the culture that he put in when he got here before last season, started and remember last season. The Sun's weren't expected to do anything. They didn't really do anything until they got to the bubble, And then they ran the table, won all eight games and still came up short of the playoffs. But the culture was already established, and that's what made Chris Paul wants to join Devin Booker and play for his old coach, Monty Williams. They played the Earth He played form 10 years ago in New Orleans wanted to re indict that, and it is special seeing the bond that has formed with this basketball team. The thing I'll tell you that's easy to root for. Is when you see a team playing true team basketball, and will I know you have love for that, because I know you have love for this game, and you've played hoops made more than I have in in our lives, and it means a lot to you. So I think when you see a team really clicking playing team basketball, it is fun to watch. The sons have hit that right now, the rolling hot and they feel very confident, even though they know it's only one game last night, and they've got to be ready because the bucks are going to throw everything at him again.
