"Hi. My name is Patrick Noodles. I am the Chairman of conservation here at the Museum of fine. Arts, HOUSTON. Art Conservation, is to restore back the functionality of an object, but is also conserving the stories that the art work will tell you. We're not turning anything back to the way it looked when it was created we're always respecting the life that it had. When you go to a museum, you see all these beautiful objects view what you do not see it's the aging process when we noticed that the for example, varnish on the painting is discolored something that is commonly used in paintings that. Are More than one hundred years old. We remove the varnish and we reapply varnished is more stable. This process is repeated at this point around every hundred years say painting is three four, hundred years old. It's been through a couple if not more treatments where the same process has been repeated. So most of the time when it comes to older paintings, we remove previous restorations and the reason why we do that is to update and refine those because they age differently from the original painting. We're very hidden profession. Very few people know that we exist our profession is by design to look invisible. We're not supposed to be pressing on the paintings. You're not supposed to be able to discern what we did to the painting when the artist creates the artworks it's being born and we are the caretakers ushering them through their life. We're helping them to look the best throughout their because we all age. We all fall apart and that's the same with artwork. So we're trying to hand over our collection here at the MFA age in the best possible way, preserve the stories to the next generation because we also like to be the messengers for the future to handover a mirror image of how our society looked like when we lived, we are more geared towards bringing people together then to show how different we are. I'm Patrick new toes I live in the east end and you're listening to Houston matters with creek home. And we do now have Houston City Council member Robert Gates. On the line he represents the greater east end as well as portions of downtown Houston Ito the Houston ship channel and some other Communities Council member Guy Egos Welcome back to the program. Good Morning. Thank you for the invitation absolutely once again, while I have questions for the council member, ideally this time for you. So I hope that you will call with your questions and comments at seven one, three, four, zero, eight, eight, seventy. You can email us at talk at Houston Matters Dot Org. You join the mayor last week in talking about cleanup efforts at homeless encampments in your district. Figuring might as well start with that. This is an effort being conducted all over the city to remove debris and disinfect those encampments. Of course, we want to do all. We can to limit the spread of covid nineteen, but is this something that should be done all the time pandemic or not? Yes. We and we have been doing that and you know prior to Kobe. Nineteen. Solid Way and Tech Dot we have been going underneath overpasses and cleaning them out But now with quoted Nineteen Nets reason why we have I don't the mirror at a news conference last Thursday Eh felt for a three-way Do the fact that with cares funding we were able to create a quogue nineteen cleanest theme of solid waste. He's thirty employees of solid waste and they have been doing an outstanding job thirty employees basically what they will be doing. They'll be targeting seventy underpasses around the city and they will be going by and cleaning up the trash. Sweep sweeping up the area They will not be his placing the homeless or removing their personal items. and. Then we have a contractor that will come in after the salt of way sweeps up and cleans up the tries the contractor will come in and spray. Sanitizing Danes around the payment and on the walls and what have you is biodegradable chemicals. So therefore, it will not be dangerous for the homeless individuals that are underneath the overpass and the reason for that is that you know even though these individuals are homeless of course, everyone matters and we have to make sure. That everyone is taken care of in in the they're important thing is that, of course, people walk from one side of the freeway to the other underneath the overpasses So those individuals that are taking their kids to school and school finally opens or goes to a business on the other side of the freeway and they have to walk underneath the overpass. We wanted to make sure that they are also walking underneath that overpass where it is clean and sanitary it's it's not of course Dangerous in regards to cove nineteen Selwyn. Thanks all the ways for this program and director Hayes as well. You mentioned schools students are or will soon return to school for the fall semester here in the coming days in most cases online only to start. But certainly by the day after Labor Day, we're going to start to see some students physically back in classrooms. What are you hearing from your constituents about that? Are you comfortable with the return to school plans have been made by schools in your district? I hear from constituents There's the fear of course to Kobe nineteen and the uncertainty of it's okay for kids and teachers to be in their classrooms So Force I don't represent Chai's I'll leave it up to the trustees but personally I'm hoping they do everything they and it's right now it seems that they orange since that you know they're looking probably in mid October on to consider if they open the schools and as of right now they will give the option to the parents to continue virtual learning or to send the kids back to school. and. Of course, the way things have been this is also to change. This is Houston matters I'm Craig Cohen we're talking with Houston City, Council, member Robert Gates he represents district I on the east side of Houston. We welcome your questions and.

Well, you can nip that in the bud, but this is somebody who's either taking advantage of you or they're taking advantage of you right, or maybe they maybe they don't know, but you you and I both know that they know they totally. No, yeah, they totally know. And so they're taking advantage of you period. There's kind of no other way to look at it at all. If there is, I don't know what it would be. Yeah. And maybe. He like, you can test the waters by when you get to the restaurant. Just grab the server, like on the side and say, separate checks, and then see how reacts when two checks show up instead of one just to kind of gauge his, you know, his level of commitment to the friendship, all man if you do, that would be interesting. That's kind of like a, I'm not paying for you today. That's a little bit of a sneak attack. It is in in, you know, he he's not gonna see coming because you know if the services shows up and puts down to checks and you just fill out yours and handed back and then see what he does. That'll kind of give you an insight into what he's thinking. When the his check comes, he's just like, oh, bro. It might let him open up. So interesting. I can't afford this man. I didn't bring any money or something like that. It might be a conversation starter to get into a deeper level of what's going on with them because, yeah, yeah, friends from kindergarten. You have heard it was talking about this case last night at the art gallery. I was talking about to a couple from San Luis Obispo who who listen to the program over there. But totally missed this story. And one of my attorney friends brought it up he was talking about this rearrest, and these people at totally missed this. So there are people who have not heard about, you know, the law enforcement finding of eleven undernourished children one dead body of a three year old at this squalid compound which included homemade firing range at I think it was like a hundred foot tunnel used a store the firearms. There was like notebooks in perishables, and and all kinds of things, but these kids were in deplorable condition. One of them was able to get a message out where dehydrated and were starving. We need help something like that. The body of the three year old was up dual golliwog wash the son of the ringleader, and he was mentally challenged. And because of that they let them die. You know, just short and sweet to let them die. This is the man son. And it looks like he was kidnapped from the mother in Georgia, and we still don't have a real heavy duty handle on who these kids are yet. But they're beginning to look like some of them may be the the grandchildren of Hodge's father who was involved with the first twin towers attack before nine eleven before they went down. So a child identified as John Doe number two told authorities that Mr. Hodge wanted to get an army together and train them for what he called jihad, which means to kill people for the shock over the discovery of his heavily armed compound in New Mexico had turned to outrage after the judge refused to detain most the suspects, but the blame has since shifted from the court to the DA's office. Now, the New Mexico attorney general Hector Balderas chastised Gallegos for for refusing to accept his offers of assistance after the sheriff's county officer conducted the raid office Gallegos fired back in a letter denying that he was that he declined the assistance any accused the attorney general of seeking national press by entering the case at an early point. Balderas has disputed the claim quote the district. Attorney has never sought meaningful front. End advice. He sought only our assistance to appeal after fatal mistakes were made by his prosecutors. Well, it offered to assist was made at the beginning of the case he failed to ask for investigative or prosecutorial help. Which could have changed the entire outcome. For this particular case. Representative Michelle Luhan Grisham the democrat running against Pierce for governor called the blown deadline absolutely inexcusable. Prosecutors must work diligently to correct this outrage and the failure to do their jobs. So you have you know, the are the D running for the same gig. You know, pointing the same crooked finger of condemnation, and rightfully so. Rightfully so. You know in August. The thirty statement, Mr. Gallegos reminded his critics that he'll have all the facts. And said the prosecutors are reviewing whether to refile child abuse charges or pursue a grand jury indictment. Well, we disagree with the judges. They did their jobs. He said on Facebook. We'll continue to do ours. Arrogant to the end, this SOB critics argued that the judges had no choice the district court judges Emilio Chavez and Jeff macelroy dismissed the child abuse charges last week and made it clear that their hands were tied because of the stupid mistake made by the DA and his staff. And he check the law yourself on that. And the judges were correct. They had no choice. Just macelroy blame the tallest prosecutors for the complete failure to follow the proper procedures and prosecuting the case Chavez called the ten day rule. Unambiguous according to the Albuquerque journal. So I mean. It's the DA that really screwed this up. The heat is thus come off the judges quite a bit. Now. Let's go back. To what was her name the district? Judge Susan Bacchus who refused to hold for the five defendants on a cash bond. This was back in the middle of August in a ruling that was hamstrung by two thousand sixteen ballot measure the change the standard for bail from an ability of a suspect to pay to the defendants risk to the community. And that's why she cut him loose. Then it was left then to the prosecutors to prove that the wash clan posed a threat and they fell short. They fell short, which is the opinion of the towels county district judges, Jeff Caldwell and Peggy Nelson. Joseph Caldwell and they're right at the time of the hearing. No charges had been filed regarding the child's death. Any firearms violations are actual threats of terrorism. No school shooter. Evidence was presented at all. As it turned out the defendants stayed put because they had nowhere to go. Apparently after the law enforcement, folks, you know, raise the compound drag it all down. But. Good news. Is there back in jail? They could get fifteen years. What do you think this case is gonna go? I mean, we we hope that the judge follows the letter of the law at the same time if he has any room to wiggle on this. Let us hope he wiggles to the nth degree as far as the punishment goes. I mean, look at all the things that have been piled up here that they can't even charge out. But if you look at the totality of what they've done. They are terrorists they were plotting against the USA they were torturing and killing minors. And you can go on from there. And as it is only going to go down on weapons charges. Which is you know, there's there's there's a little bit of a an enhancement on that. Because the ringleader of the weapons is twenty year illegal alien from Haiti. The rest of all of that stuff. The the child abuse the child death terrorism it all goes away. Because in FDA. Now after hearing all of this. What do you say now? Somebody goofed big time. But thankfully, somebody caught up with him. Finally, is there anything else to be said about this case. What do you say four nine zero fifty eight fifty eight this one still burns deepen me eight hundred seven seven six fifty eight fifty eight man, I invite your calls, man. I'd I'd really like to know where you're at on this. Now, we've got a news update on Cam J. Here's liskeard. Thank you rate. Governor Jerry Brown issuing a veto of a Bill. He says would have given an unfair advantage. Too large beer manufacturers. The measure would have led beer makers give up to five cases of free glassware to bars or other beer retailers. Brown writes in his veto message that the Bill could have disadvantaged small breweries who can't afford free glasses the way that the large ones can President Barack a former president. Barack Obama has jumped into the political fray delivering a speech at the university of Illinois that is one of the harshest rebukes of the Trump presidency. So far.
