"It's merriam Webster's word of the day for March 14th. Today's word is gallivant, spelled G ALL IVA gallivant is a verb. It means to go or travel to many different places for pleasure. It's this verb gallant that is the likely source of gallivant, which originally meant to act as a gallant or to go about usually ostentatiously or indiscreetly with members of the opposite sex. But you talk to these young women and what I mean what was happen where it was possesses someone T take any offer completely unknown person like that. If you would be so surprised. I'll tell you the truth. I actually talked. I brought this up to a friend of mine who, when I started working on this story, and she told me that I think it was 10. Years ago, she was in high school. There are some people who are. It's kind of your typical. Maybe they're in the homeless situation, and they need that kind of taking care of. But also if you think this isn't your kid Is absolutely could be anyone's kid. That's what the prosecutors told me and the former sugar baby that you know it could be. It's girls who just have a regular life who wants some nicer things, And there's not a lot of jobs available for people that are 16 years old and 17 years old to get the kind of nice things they want. So they see. This is You know a good path because sex is desensitized for many in the current, you know, Younger generation? Yeah. All right. So how do they approach? How are the investigations approaching this? And is this something that comes? This is homegrown. Sugaring stuff, Or is it done by what overseas? Send the kids? I mean, how does it work? I think there's both but definitely definitely homegrown. The reason that this story actually came to me was because our King County prosecutor partnered with a look nonprofit called Stolen Youth that fights against sex trafficking for underage girls sex trafficking altogether. And then a company that's here in gentle called D n A. And what they did was create an algorithm to help combat sugaring. What it does is recognizes phrases or propositions on social media. To try to interrupt the process before you even get really in the criminal justice system. Their tool categories is the language in four different areas. They look for potential victims, victims exploiters and then just kind of general media and then the body recognizes the language. On whatever platform that could be Twitter or whatever social media and then sends a message automatically to that person who posted the message. A welcome Thank you. Power love seeing you, and by the way, First Latina present. There have been other women president. That's right. That's a good point. While it's a better point, actually, because when you talk about being the first Latino president, that's a big deal, and you're gonna give you tell people in this. Pull up your bootstraps and get things going to get all the all the chips on your end. Well, I think Look, first of all, you can think that entrepreneurship is some grandiose Think I think you have to just get started, right? I think people think sometimes when I talk to women, especially they go entrepreneurship. It seems like you're supposed to be set Our Blakely that starts Spanx, and then it feels on wheels Lee and think you can do it. I think you're just literally start from selling clothes out of your closet that you really needed to get rid of on eBay or Amazon and just get going. Do it an hour a week. Do it Whenever. Do it as a side. Hustle while you have a job, But get going because sooner or later the day will come when you get laid off. The day will come when you're the wrong age for a job, and you're gonna have no skills, no muscle built around being entrepreneurial. And so that's why I say just start in a shared our economy. Anybody could drive an uber You can rent the room out of your house on Airbnb. Entrepreneurship is about just get going. Do it at the land thing on the land line. Do we have enough time here like to talk about all the obstacles that you had to go through to get where you are, I mean, You know a lot. But you know what? But you can't look at it. I mean, part of being an entrepreneur is you have to really want you really have to want a better life for yourself. Because guess what? Yeah, there are a million obstacles. Are there opposite goals going to up the good corporate ladder? They're even more obstacles. So as an entrepreneur, all the obstacles you hit. At least you're doing it for yourself and to build wealth and to build abundance. So you know, look at it as your your life is a video game You get from level one to Level two, and you blow it and you go back to level one, but You get up on the horse again and do it again. You know the the important word on the cover of this book, Self made is empowerment or empowered Because all we really had there is no Howard until you have your own money. There is no if you're working for the man all the time. You're not empowered completely because you knew somebody could fire you. There has to be one little part of your life. Even an hour a week that you own that you own the whole thing. So how do you cut that cord? Well, you don't do it overnight. You have to start worrying about you have to create a dream that's bigger than where you're at. You have to really create a plan that's in steps. You have to take baby steps by having little winds. As I said You couldn't sell something on eBay. Amazon do little things. You don't cut the cord of night or you're crazy. You have to do it planned out. Maki, a valiant thought out. So you've got to really focus on what's your pain? What's something you know really Well what? Something you're naturally good at. Yeah, There's a million great ideas out there but solve your own problem first, And that means you'll solve the problem from million people like you. How do you convince people Nellie Galan, who wrote the self made I'll get this in. I wrote a book. So I know how important this is, Um How do you convince people who are down and out who don't Maybe have the empowerment yet? Who don't realize that this is all we have is just one second in our life. You got to do something. Now. How do you tell them that to go empower yourself. Well, I think I do it with fear. Like I tell you if you don't do what What is your life gonna look like when you're old man or a woman? Look at someone that hasn't empowered yourself. Older than you and look at what's happened to them. And is that the way you want to get to old age, So I mean, there's not a single person alive. I'm gonna make you start a business. I haven't idea for you. I'm sure you did. You probably got that for everybody. I do, because I think that again these air incredible times the digital age, no barrier to entry. Look at us. We're doing a TV thing together. By Skype. I mean, there are no barriers for people to start anything and so to live in this country, which is a privilege to have all these opportunities the digital age and not do it. It's the era of the entrepreneur. It's crazy not to do it even again, starting small. Let's not get crazy and grandiose, starting small baby steps. I mean, you're crazy not to do it. Yeah, I think the first time somebody makes a mistake or a mistake is made or the the trajectory seems like it's going down. They get disappointed. Bang her out. So how do you get over that? We'll talk about that. In the book, I say Fear and failure have got to be my best friend. What happens in a corporation? When you screw up, you get demoted, You get fired. It's not like that's a smooth sailing thing in entrepreneurial life. You will make make mistakes and you'll fail and right around the corner from the greatest failures of my life. Biden names diverse economic team with four women in top roles to help build recovery
"Group that features four women in top roles, including former Federal Reserve Board chair Janet Yellen as his choice for Treasury secretary. Reporter Jim Tankersley of The New York Times has been following these developments closely. He covers economics for the paper, and he's also the author of the recent book, The Riches of this Land. Jim Tankersley. Thanks so much for being with us again. What do these choices as a group tell you about Joe Biden's priorities What he may do once he takes office. Well, thanks so much for having me Judy. This is a group that is really focused on workers and on labor and maybe one of the most of union friendly groups of top economic advisers. We've seen in the White House in a long time and in particular for policy right out of the gate. It's a group that's going to be very committed on the idea of trying to get the economy up and running as fast as it can as quickly as possible in order to boost worker wages. And it's gonna be not at all shy about pushing additional deficit spending by the federal government in order to get there. And specifically with regard to covert relief, Covad economic relief. Can you tell anything from looking at this group? But what what might happen? Yeah, They've been very clear a number of them from Janet Yellen, the Neera tanden on down on these pics about the sorts of things that need to be done to help. People and businesses and state local governments survived. This pandemic on DAT includes more direct aid tol division ALS. It includes more help for small businesses and in particular age of states and local governments who have big budget holes, But also things like passing pandemic paid leave, You know a program to give family and paid leave. The workers who are on the front lines of code in particular, and I think that you will see all of those policies pushed early on by the biting teeth. So let's talk specifics. Janet Yellin at Treasury, the first woman to hold that job as we were saying, what do we know? Based on her record? What to expect from her. Janet Yellen is a labor economist by training on someone who really pushed the Federal Reserve when she was the chairman of the reserve to keep interest rates low for a long time in order to stoke growth, and I think we'll see more of that out of her hear more of a focus on inequality and unworkable is and you know another thing that she's focused on a lot in the last couple of years is on Tearing down the barriers of discrimination in the economy to help women in particular succeed, and I think you'll see her focus on that as well. It's it's been a big deal for her in the economics profession, but it's something that she is talked a lot about having enormous consequences for the broader economy. And then Cecilia Rouse, who President elect Biden Has said he wants to head his council of Economic Advisers. Not as well, a known name as the others. But so what should we know about her? She'll if she's confirmed, should be the first black economist ahead the Council of Economic Advisers she was on the council under President Barack Obama. She's also a labor economist, ah, real expert in a variety of things having to do with labor and education, and just like Jenna Galan has, as focused a lot of academic work on the effects of discrimination. S O. There are some common themes here with the team. And then there is Tol, the Office of Management and Budget. Neera Tanden, who has been around she's someone who I think is familiar. Too many who watch what's going on in Washington. What do what do we look for? From her? Near attended, runs the center for American Progress, which is a liberal think tank, and she has been on adviser to Hillary Clinton. She's been around Washington for a long time. She is someone who has really pushed on a variety of sort of liberal policy agenda items that is more of a political player than the other two. But I think with Neera Tanden, you will see Ah, focus in the Ownby. If she's confirmed on things like climate change healthcare on you on sort of Not shying away again from running budget deficits. Tosto growth, which is you know a real, I think departure from what many progressives thought they might be getting if I hadn't had appointed someone who was more of a moderate deficit, longer term deficit Hawk Democrat to that position. And Jim. What about with regard to Senate confirmation? These three positions we've been talking about all require Senate confirmation. What is expected for each one of them for yelling for rouse and for Tanda. Well, I think Janet Yellen appears likely to be confirmed. Based on the comments that we've seen in the last 24 hours from Republican senators. She's someone who has been confirmed by the Senate before. So is this is the arrest who I think is like that he converted also in less Republicans find some things in her academic work that they really object to Neera Tanden again as a more political player and someone who's Twitter feed has really offended. A lot will depend on whether Democrats control the senator Republicans do after the runoff elections that Georgia in January. And one other thing, Jim. I mean, people look to see the differences between this team and the Trump economic team. Pretty significant difference. Sure, there's just a big difference in how they approach the economy. The Trump team came in with a real focus on how do they sperm or business investment of the economy? How can they do more by taking away regulations by cutting taxes to make businesses happier and get them to spend more money on investments of this team is much more focused on workers. How do they support workers? How do they change regulations or even bolster them? To make it easier for people to work and to make that work pay off with higher wages, so it's just completely different angle at looking at the economy and very different policies that will result Him.
