Boston's Black Nativity Celebrates 50 Years
"Black nativity is celebrating fifty years in boston. This weekend written by langston hughes. It's a gospel song. Play that re imagines the story of the nativity by placing it in an early twentieth century. "That was Joe in Gaithersburg, Maryland. Here on the wreck. Cattleman show you could do a Joe didn't call us with your question. Triple eight Plan, Rick. Let's talk with Howard here on the wreck. Gentleman show he's calling from Long Beach, New York. Hello, Howard. Welcome to the program. Thank you, Rick. How are you doing? Very well. How are you today? What can I do for you? Okay, So my question is, But I know that usually have a ratio between equities and bonds or funds of each that should reflect your age and risk tolerance and generally at my age of 61 that would work out to be around 40% equities and 60% bonds. Or because I'm fairly moderate, too aggressive man vesting. I would set it word around 50 50, however, regard the bonds. Um You know, I'm thinking that interest rates are pretty low with the U. S. And well, where else where are actually below zero. You know elsewhere, like in Europe, and I'm wondering if I should be looking elsewhere. Or a better return on my investments while not taking, you know too many chances. What would be your thoughts in regard to that? Yeah, that is the vexing question. Facing all investors these days bonds as you've noted interest rates, or zero point nothing which is subjecting bonds to two very big risks. One of them is interest rate risk. The other one is credit risk, both of them very scary for bonds. Interest rate risk is very simple. If interest rates go up, the value of bonds goes down. The general attitude is with interest rates at a mere zero. They pretty much of only one way to go in the future, and that's up. And if that happens, bond values will fall. And then there's credit risk. All bonds are assigned a credit rating. Triple A is the very best all the way down to a single D. There's triple A double A single A triple B double be single B and all the way down and the value of a bond is in large part based on its credit on its credit rating on If that bonds credit rating falls off a triple A bond falls, the double a than the value of the bond falls well, with many bonds being issued by corporations and many of those corporations struggling in this recession and pandemic environment. It's possible that the bonds quality will drop. And if that happens, the bonds rating goes down and you could have a double whammy. The reason the credit rating goes down is because interest rates went up. Which means you have Ah, double reason that the bonds could fall in value. So you're right. It is dangerous and scary to be looking at bonds in an environment like this. Does this mean we tell our clients to get out of bonds? Not at all. It simply means we're telling them to go with shorter term bonds because they are less susceptible to interest rate risk and to stick with higher quality bonds, which are less likely to suffer declines in their credit. Such as government bonds. You mean the U. S government's not going anywhere? That's very different from a fly by night Internet startup that who knows what's gonna happen to its fortunes in the future so short, high quality bonds as opposed to long term. Low rated corporate bonds, for example. But again, we're still talking about bonds. There's the whole issue of the stock market, the other half of your equation, the other half of your money, and in the world of stocks. You have a wide variety of stocks. They're too big companies, highly successful and very small startup companies. You have growth versus value. U S versus foreign And so on. So rather than putting this in the combination of black and white, yes or no on her off, which is what you're doing when you say 50 50. Instead, I would argue that you should diversify more broadly, the way that we reduce the risk. Is by reducing the amount of money we have in any one kind of asset class or market sector. If we take the premise that they're 16 or 18 asset classes and market sectors, we wanna have a little bit of money and all of them this way. Any one thing going wrong won't hurt everything. It will only hurt one small part of the portfolio. So broad diversification is the answer. That's how you reduce your risks maintain the opportunity to earn the returns that are provided, on average, overall from all This diversified investing style on allows you to sleep easy at night. In other words, we're basically saying That Howard, There's no safe place to hide. There is no such thing as an investment that does it all. Because I know what you want. Howard, Trust me. I know this. I know you really well. What you want is an investment that has a high return low risk, no taxes and no fees. Right. All that would be ideal. If you could structure portfolio along those lines. Exactly. We all want that. Don't wait And the problem is, it doesn't exist so I can give you investments that are very high in return. I can also give you investments that are very high in safety, but I can't give you an investment. That is both. I can give you an investment that is low tax. But I can't give you an investment that is equally lo Fi. In other words, there's no one investment that does it all. And that's why we have to do override Eve investments. One of them will give you the return potential. Another one will give you the income potential. Another one will give you the safety opportunity. Another one will be lowered costs another one of the little attacks and so on and so forth, and we build that we put it together so that Delaying In the aggregate. The portfolio strikes the balance that you're seeking among all of those different levers. Okay, That sounds fine. But do you mind if I ask you a follow up? Question? Sure. What? Okay, let's say that I have sufficient assets to, uh, to create a portfolio along those lines but secure my retirement moving forward, But then I have additional assets so that I could construct an alternative court portfolio to, uh, to enable me to have to be more aggressive and to seek Higher returns and subject myself to greater risk. Do you have any recommendations? What I could do what I could do with those additional funds? Well, I would. But I'm not sure what I would answer because I don't know enough about you just yet. But I would say conceptually, your correct There's nothing wrong with that, And it's very common for our clients to do this, in fact, and let me elaborate and explain what I'm talking about. What we want to do is figure out how much money do you need to live on? What is your What? Your expenses. What do your income sources? What is the size of your portfolio? Once we figure out a financial plan to get you the income you need for a long as you're going to live without giving you unnecessary risks. If you have money left over beyond the need that you have to achieve that goal. You've got extra cash available. Then we say sure if you are of the mind set and you would like to speculate you would like to take aggressive risks with that smaller portion of money to achieve a higher return, and it won't hurt you if you fail, but you might benefit Viv. You succeed? Sure, Go ahead and do that, And it's not uncommon. For a client of ours to say I'm going to take 50 grand. And I'm gonna go buy blank whether that's lottery tickets or Bitcoin or exponential technologies or some tech stock or who knows what commodities trading or whatever they have fun. They treat it like a hobby, and it won't hurt them financially might annoy them, but it won't hurt them if they fail. On in that sense, great. No problem. So before I could say that to you, I would want to make sure we're verifying that you have the luxury of being able to go do that. Go have a play account. But let's make sure that you can afford to have a play account. And sometimes that play Countess five grand. Sometimes it's 500 grand. It depends on the client not only how much money they've got, but their attitude, their inclination. And the support of their spouse, Because very often the special say, Oh, no, You're not. So you've got to make sure we get it all worked out. Okay, Fair enough. I'll check with my my stuff before I continue this wind of inquisition. That's a very smart and healthy approach. And then the two of you give us a call. Meet with us, and we'll work it out for you. Okay. All right. Very good. Thank you very much for your time. I appreciate it. You're very welcome, Howard. Thank you. That.
