"And my uncle said that nice now also we were franken. I'm with talking about how i mean you. You know. I remember when you used to do your bit on You know arnold hor shack and stuff. I catch rushing star. Children created that show. And you were wound up being pushed out of the show that you created yes autumn. It was always a conflict between me and comex who was the executive producer. He always saw. The show is different comeback. you know. He wasn't without talent but his if use i don't know how many people remember chico and the man probably yeah ten percent already and the courtship of eddie's father before well those were comex shows i was back in charge doing what he thought was funny and He didn't understand my concept of welcome. Back kotter was four guys who are different ethnic backgrounds of the best of friends. And they're funny. They're underachievers and the teacher tries to help them adjust in life and become something and he just always went for Something different than what. I thought was funny. So we had conflicts and by the fourth year. I always thought that It was really strange because some of the dogs were like in the twenties when we started filming and our thirty right and they still wanted to do the same thing. And i said you know. It's it just doesn't work anymore. It's it's getting to look really strange. And so we reached an agreement that i would do like four five shows the last year and then komax had his way and high gupta writers who agreed with what his concepts were and did his version. Welcome back kotter in the fourth year. Did gloria swanson audition for connor or is that bullshit. I found out on the web. I would say that's bullshit. I just show you how unreliable i am. The is she the audition before one man was changed to a male the principle this there was it was always a male. Okay so there you go and danette bs. How did they explain. Why qatar wasn't around anymore. They explained it in the komax way. Not really an explanation. I was sick. I was i was. I didn't watch many of the shows in the last year but there was no real explanation. Just that i was out of town. Doing something and masha was in teaching. All of a sudden. The teacher's wife is a teacher. They had other guests. Delleri showed up. Della reese was a teacher for a while. so it's sorta didn't make any sense but comeback out what he wanted. He was in charge. Well you had a vision for adapting to the times and you just ran into that old network the network laziness. They didn't want to change horses. They wanted to keep flogging it. Yeah i thought it would be great if kata gets a job at a junior college. Yeah and then the first day who shows up you know they're they're they are. They graduated now there in his class. There or you change some of the guys you know couple are out and then maybe they have a couple of guests appearances once or twice a year but you get a couple of new kids who really look like. They're in high school but they wouldn't go for that at the time I i always thought it was funny. I used to watch these. Show the bowery boys all on tv. And i thought okay these are supposed to be some. Troubled sim troublesome juvenile delinquent boys. And they were all like you know had like a drunken lines in her face right like ball being and pot belly. Yeah they always always stay too long at the fair guild. Did you wanna try your Your qatar s jokes on gabe is gonna do any. I'll think i'm okay. Did i ever tell you about my aunt edna. Godfried walk into a dentist office. Took off all of her clothes and spread her legs wide open. That dish said. I think you have the wrong room. And edna said you put it in my husband's teeth last week now. I have to remove them. Says conner after dark. Did i tell you. My young coach stanley godfrey on gold stanley and a woman started to have sex in the middle of a dark forest. After about fifteen minutes on gold stanley gets up and says damn. I wish i had a flashlight. The woman judge me to you've been eating grasp the past or or isn't he tell you my hand lorraine god for you know you never did kill lorraine walk zada shower wings at her boyfriend and says honey i shaved myself down there what that means and the boyfriend says yeah it means the drain is clogged again off. Right dal you about uncle leo. Godfried ongo leo. Zora lady with big breasts. He adds. excuse me. Can i buy. Jim brass for two thousand dollars. She agrees they go to a secluded corner. G opens up blouse. The man puts his face in our brass but ten minutes. I'll eventually the lady says. Aren't you gonna bite them each not expensive. We could stop you there. How gave those would have been great on qatar. maybe censor them might have to clean it up chamois. No game still owns the qatar franchise skill. So so you could bring it back with all my guy. Welcome back gottfried. We own it me. Alan saxe co created. We we own it for everything but network television so for movies plays. They didn't pay a certain price that they had to pay. So they wanna brothers owns it for network. Tv so gilbert do it and one of our guests on the podcast. Was john sebastian. Yeah sure yeah great. Yes song now. That was that was interesting because they were. They were looking for theme song. And i came over the concept. Let's get these acts that were really big few years ago to write songs on spec and we'll see if we get anything good and johnson bash one of them and dion. Dr belmont sherm up with a great song to a really great song. I was really close between the two songs. The original title was qatar and then they changed it right before they had the first.

"Years. Were these older strippers who were carryovers. From burlesque some of them no Most of them were like just weren't the kind of strip clubs that they are. Now where you know girls can make a lot of money. I say this was. They would making the same thing you know they were making like seventy five dollars for for two days so it was a whole different thing but i actually did work what this one that tried to kill ourselves. Can you tell me more about that. Yes i we still keep in contact christmas card every year. She was sitting in the front of the car. We're driving back. I think it was from bridgeport. Connecticut and all of a century grabs the wheel. And she's my fucking life not worth living anymore. Okay you know. And and we're swerving all highway pull over to the of the road and then she calms down a little bit. I said okay Sit in the back and she sits in the back and we drive and then she grabs me back again. It's the same thing. I want to kill myself. I wanted this to be over. And then i drove to a bar and the call the police and the game and kept her overnight and then i heard the agents as you came back the next day but while see you had it easy. Yeah what were you starting to say about burlesque. I actually did a week. And burlesque. I was i did a club in kansas city and And then i. I met a stripper. We were living together. I liked it. Kansas city but it wasn't working and then they told me that the straight man at the burlesque theater there was a burlesque vehicle the strand and it had a you had to do four shows a day. They had dirty movies and in between the movies they had a burlesque show was four shows a day and the straight man and the comedian. How to fight. I show ten o'clock in the morning so they said they need a straight man immediately. Have you ever done burlesque. Say oh yes sure number and i went over to the theater and a guy and the magistrates. Go see the comedian. I think his name was slinky or stinky slinky. And i go down to the dressing rooms and is really discussing. Oh man had a bruise on his face. I guess they got into a physical confrontation. And i said i'm the new straight man I did acquaintance box. And i said he never did. The queen's box never did acquaintance box. Everybody knows acquaintance box. I don't know the queen's box. Can you teach it to be a quick study. I god damn it so he teaches me degrees spot. It was a burlesque routine and he would be on stage with a few of the girls and then they would leave and i would walk by and he would say. Hey georgie I haven't seen you for a while. And i'd say just came back from london. What did you do over there. I went to the raises at ascott. Oh yeah well. My got caught dementia last night. No a big deal racist racist every year. You get a good seat. I say yeah i say right in the mcqueen's box. Oh yeah it was a good seat you sav. Where'd you sit on the queen's box. I was the only one that king was there. Duke and duchess were a couple of the royal. God's everybody was in the queens where she must have a really big box. It's still funny to me that you know you'll feel bad. When you hear these stories about famous comics. And what became them like avidan costello and stuff but when you see the ones that didn't make it like guys like that. Oh thousands and thousands guys that have been in vaudeville. Burlesque never got a shot and then we got a sniffer. Getting on television or anything like that. It was All the all the cities you know that i went to there was a lot of comics. None of ever got a shot. I asked him if he played mob clubs gilbert and he had a couple of he had a couple of good stories one that actually one that actually involved a relative of mine. Yeah there was a club on. I'm ashamed eilly will call the san suu san and remember rodney. Did a joke about it. Yeah censor said. They came up with the name. San suu they never another word thrown another sent in mineola in mineola right and owner or the suppose owner was sunny franchisee. Who was you know. A relative of my grandmother's cousin and he was supposedly owned the club. But it was somebody else listed as the owner. But he was in there every night and they would have pretty big star's there and they would get comedians open who they'd have to pay a lot so i worked there one time. We frankie avalon. I was making three hundred dollars for Nine days and sunny franchises always friendly and a good show. Kid you know good show. One time. He said We're going to breeze into city. Wanna come with us. And i said no thanks. I got some stuff to do a good decision. I didn't Didn't explore that happened gilbert. I never told you that my my third cousin was the under boss of the colombo family. What's where he because. You never told me you auditioned for chico. Yes and holding. You guys are even. I do like that story gave to about if you can tell it Where you went into the club you went in you. You're in between shows and you went to get a bite to eat. oh yeah. Atlantic city and atlantic is in atlantic city. Gilbert will like this was a club called the paddock club. I guess this is around. Nineteen sixty six and it was a strip club. And i went there monday night. Did the first show is to shows tonight. I did the first show and went well. And i said to the owner Is there a place to eat around. You know like some eat. See about five six blocks away. There's an italian sandwich shop. And they got great roast beef. They cut it right there and ham turkey. Whatever you want. And it'd be fast. So i go to the place. I want a roast beef sandwich to me right away. Sit down and there's like three old men sitting at table places. Pretty empty and one of the man comes over and he says you have a good trip. I said yeah and he gives me a small manila envelope and he goes back to the table. God and i opened the manila envelope. And.

"And then shooting herself right right. Yeah she I don't know how long they were together. Because i actually you know. I didn't really know him that well. I never was at his house. And i never really met her. I think i was introduced to her that day when he came to the kotte set But i didn't know her at all but she at a real sad ending. Was there an amount. he sued. You forgave do you happen to recall it. No i don't recall what the amount was. I think it was a game. And i were talking over the weekend. Gilbert and i found it funny that groucho objecting to the idea that he never used that kind of language he said. And if you read the richard anabela books as we all have. Yeah i think the thing was that he was saying it about somebody's mother. That was like that was interesting. Crossing a line for that was grossing. He just likes to sue people at one point. He sued author at one point. Sudas kid your son of a book that he wrote a background show while things groucho and me or one of those books and and they didn't they they had it on and off relationship where they would talk. They wouldn't talk and he he liked to sue. He was very religious. Did you get any feedback from any of the other marks family members about the show melinda or anybody or the only one that i know they came to see the show as we did it in rancho mirage and susan marx harpo grain was very complimentary especially about the old grout show and see said I felt i felt. I was in the room with him. You know it was scary. So i don't know what her relationship was was with him but she Really liked the old groucho. Gilbert does a pretty farrell groucho gave us. I told you. I love to hear it. I am working with our show. Much usual in my heard huge stage and iorean would watch and the people who watch goalie ordering as great great. We could have you guys tour together. We can we do. We do the odd couple together. Now that would be fantastic. Also i remember years ago talking to milton berle and he said he just shot a roast a dean mont rose that i know you're familiar with and he said that they would just put the camera on him and the director would say okay. You just got hit with a real zinger now and now. Ooh i'm shocked. I can't believe somebody said that on. Tv and he would do the reactions to jokes. He wasn't even hearing the director would say and they shot them all separately. So what was it like with you. Forgave was gabe was even a man of the hour. Weren't you gave. Yeah i did about. I would say five or six of them and they would take these shots and cut him in and the editor was not that good so it. It didn't look realistic. Look really strange. Sometimes somebody laughing at something and it wasn't that funny and they put like three different shots of people hysterical and the jokes were bad. Anyway i was telling frank when we talk the mohammed ali. One was the best. Because everybody. I was boxers and comedians and Elite came up at the end and he looked at the teleprompter while he was supposed to read. He says all these people's insulted me. And i don't care because i have. They had in the face of death. many times. But enough about phyllis diller and then he said dean martin team. Did you write this joke. The on the what do you want me insult this. Lady phyllis diller. I don't know who she is. I don't know anything about this woman. Why would i sell to like that. I wanna tell you something deem all these jokes. These comedians and these boxes are saying that all bad jokes boxes can't talk. Anyway they get up. Dude these comed- don't you have any better. You build these big hotels. I mean you got millions of dollars. Can't you write bennett jokes. I say in any. Let me see this next. That's the worst joke into. Phyllis diller joke on how much you pay these people at these jokes. And he's and then he went on for like fifteen minutes. He was hysterical talking about how bad the jokes were. How phony. this whole. Setup was talking about ripping apart just ripping the thing apart and talking about the cutting. You know how they wanted him to do this. And do that and greg garrison got so pissed off that he did this. Meanwhile the audience was hysterical. Everybody on the day was falling down. We'd never because the jokes were bad. You know most of the people would get there and they would read the jokes in the dressing room. And then they would read them on the teleprompter. They didn't know what they were going to say. so they wound up cutting alley down to about a minute a half and they didn't use any of the great stuff that he had done. That's a shame. Greg garrison for our listeners was the producer of those roasts and the and the dean martin show so you didn't interact much with orson sin or or ruth buzzy or or or or john wayne or any of those those people you are on those shows what they were in and out. Yeah everybody was in and out you got there. They had your well. I wrote my own stuff. A lot of the comics wrote their own stuff. But most of the other people didn't they had this whole group of writers that would give him these jokes and they just decided and the concept worked but most legendary harry crane was one of those writers gill. Yeah i remember what used to be uncomfortable for me. Which when i was watching it and they wouldn't go and now ladies and gentlemen art carney. It would be and now ladies and gentlemen ignored and and they wouldn't say now peter full. He roasted his colombo. Yeah yes and that always made me uncomfortable. I thought that never worked. Yes sometimes it'd be will come out and character. Charlie callas was always a character was. Oh with buzzy was always gladys. Yeah right now. I know you're since your remarks birds. We'll move on. I want to ask you. But richard pryor gay. But since you're you are a marks expert what do you know about harpo. Stooping amelia earhart..

"How many songs were supposed to be in the show. You were supposed to sing. What lydia or lydia. I must be going This song that grouch. I forgot what it was. I love you in the world is mine something. Yeah i can't think of the name of it. Right and maybe four or five songs. And i cut most of them out and he went along with you but then he he would say i. We wanna put lydia back in said. I can't sing author. So finally he took the show to broadway and I was in it. And then i said author the mind if i do my version of the show without any singing and then i still did it occasionally for fifteen years in different places. Every every few years. I did in boston in florida i would do. It and it was a introspective. More of a comment on what comedians life is. Like and hour and happy groucho was and how entertaining wasn't how he made millions of people around the world. Happy but he himself was not that happy so that was the show that i wanted to do and i finally got a chance to do that. And and what was your relationship like with groucho. I met him a few different times. First time i met him. I had been on the merv griffin he had Seen it and i wanted to nate. Now's allegation in los angeles and he recognized me. And i i went up to him and he knew me which was surprising and he said to the guy who was with this is Gene kaplan and he was very funny. Did a bit about old people on his aiding game. And i thought it was hysterical and i said well thank you Graduate but my name is gabe. He said i'm going to call you gene. And i said okay i'm gonna call us up and we established You know like. I thought that he was my friend that i was hoping to to run into him again. And the next time. I released the record comedy record and i got a summons groucho. Marx was suing me and i had no idea what he found. So offensive record and the record was what eventually became. Welcome back kotter about these guys and that they insulted each other and we called it ranking know other people call it the dozens. Oh yeah and it's kids insulting each other on the street and there was one kid who was the champion rancor and this kid from philadelphia came and not only could iraq but he could do it while doing impressions so one of the impressions was groucho marx and he would insult the other kid and say I understand your mother sat on the washington monument Last night and it wasn't enough you know and and and grout so heard this and he filed a lawsuit that wanted. The record stopped and i talked to his lawyer and i said you can't be serious about this. And he said well he is. He says a lot of people so i can i set up. Can i set up a call for you to talk to them. And maybe apologize to do something and i said. I'd love to talk them in. I met him and He said okay. Here's his number call him. He's expecting it to call. So i called him and he said you remember. We met nate. Now's yes. I remember. But i never done anything like that in my life. I would never say anything about anybody's mother. I said i understand. You would never say but it's not use saying it it's supposed to be you know try and and if it makes you feel any better I only did that on the record. I don't i don't do that anymore. All right you're not gonna do it anymore. You're not. I said no i won't do it anymore. I promise you it's. It's not something that people really got upset or think badly of you for. Is it all right. All right and he dropped the lawsuit. And the next time i saw him was when he came to Welcome back kotter and everybody is so funny. Everybody has different recollections of what happened that day we did a reunion on You know nick at night. And marsha said that groucho is supposed to dance with our when he came on this show which would have been hard because he could. He couldn't even move. So i don't know who's going to and i heard what evan ear on your show. Yup talking about what i remember is it. We're talking about. Maybe he would do something and he came up to me and he says you know. They want me to do something and i said. Yeah but what are you gonna do. And so you know one idea what might be. I'm sitting on the bench outside the school yard and your back to the audience and i say As long as waiting for the bus let me tell you about my uncle. And i do this uncle joke. And he's gonna joke. You're going to do. And i told him the joke and i said after i do the joke you say. That's the worst joke. I ever heard my life turn around. Everyone sees his groucho marx. And they scream and you say that's the worst joke ever heard in my life. He said well that's not going to be hard to do because it is. The worst joke ever heard island and then erin fleming for a lot of money. I think ten thousand dollars and they weren't going to give him. You know they were hoping to do it for free. And but he was ready and he was excited about doing it while we never got it like dealing with their in. I was gonna ask the same thing. What were your impressions of erin. I didn't deal with her The producers deal with her. I just dealt directly with groucho because i kind of knew him a little bit and we were going over the bit and what. He was going to do what he's going to say. So i didn't have any of that relationship whether they just came and told me i remember seeing her there but they came and told me it's off. He's not going to do it. And everybody was so disappointed. And she wound up being homeless terrible.

"The orange and black KNBR 1045 and six sports leader Thie giants and the Dodgers, and they're going to play two. And in this the year of the pandemic doubleheaders consist of 27 inning game. So will take part of that for the first time here today. I'm John Miller with Gabe Kaplan. Manager of the Giants and gay before we talk about today's game, obviously yesterday the teams into up, not playing and expressing solidarity. With the Black lives matter Movement, but also in particular the police shooting of Jacob Blake. So So where are we now? And is that all something that's everybody has expressed themselves on a TTE. This point? Yeah, I think a lot of people have expressed their their opinions and shared emotions on this topic. And look, it's it's not going away. We? We absolutely denounce. Racism and believe that equality in our sport is critically important, um, and simultaneously are preparing to play two games with the Dodgers today. That's a challenge and we're ready for it. All right, so two games and talking baseball now. Seven inning game. Is that a different kind of managing Versus a regular nine inning major league game. I think you just start to treat the 5th 6th and 7th inning of the game, John like very similarly, as you treat the 7th, 8th and 9th. But the same time you trust your starting pitchers and if they're effective, and they're efficient You let them go. I think it's exciting because you have the potential of no pitcher going and six and getting you to the last inning of the game so very excited to watch Webby pitching in this first game and Hospital. It's the second game for us and excited for that one as well that Guzman was originally scheduled to go in last night's game against Kershaw. So you've kind of flip flop those two with the Web scheduled for today. How come We just reached out to gauze announcement. You got any strong preference and being the better picture? We don't really see much of a strategic advantage going in game one or game too. They're both important games and You know, we're gonna have a job are likely in both lineups. No curse on the mound will be the DHD and Trump will will catch and Trump has had some nice success with Webby thus far, and I just felt like that was a good place to go. All right. So, uh, Bart will be the end. Did you say Bart will be in the line of in both? He'd be the catcher in Game two. You'll be the catcher in Game two. All right, Giants and Dodgers. It's a doubleheader. Not too many of those between the Giants and Dodgers over the years and we'll have more. Gabe Kapler..

"In the on deck circle. The pitch is blasted to Centre Field going back on it is Marty still going back? It is off the top of the wall. He missed the home run by a half a foot. Buffered over to third. He'll stop there. Joey barred in the second. I can't believe it didn't go out. Man. He just clobbered it to the left of straightaway center, and he hit it to that new 7 ft wall in front of the Giantsbullpen and he missed the home run by inches. And it was a pitch to that same spot on the outside, and the replay subsequently showed that may have missed being a home run by Even less than half a foot. Maybe about two inches. Three inches tops so very, very close, and the Giants had runners at 2nd and 3rd. And then Mauricio Du Bon, Another pinch hitter, came up. Again. Gabe Kaplan knew he could use those right handed pinch hitters because this new rule instituted this year, Grace was going to have to face three hitters coming in for the bullpen, the only left handed The D bags had and he only faced one lefty as it turned out Crawford, whom he walked to start the inning. So this was an inning that was characterized by walks. With grace having so much trouble Gara was brought in. He had thrown 28 pitches in last night's game and laborious seventh inning in which he gave up a couple of runs. And he was not the same tonight He'd been the D'backs about as good as there was in the Arizona bullpen before last night, But tonight he came in, and he just started walking people with the bases loaded. Nobody out. First off, he walked Yeahs. Three and one. Here's the pitch. Stransky takes lowball for Gara has walked in around the Giants are back a head to toe one. So Brandon Crawford's scored that brought up Alex Dickerson, and he, too, stood and watched Sarah to the plate. Occurs. It takes lowball four. He's walked in another run. Yeah. So the Giants had at that point walked four times in the ending of the first five hitters faced. The only hit in that stretch was that booming pinch it double by Joey Barton. Then Donovan Solano also gotta run home, although he actually strong the bad, too. Here's.

"I mean, if you look at offense versus defense, they clearly like the bath, particularly against Left handed pitching, even though he's had some river splits in the past. They they think your strength is sitting left handed pitching. Um, I did find it interesting that the other day gave chapter was running through all the strengths. After Posey said he was gonna opt out. Gabe Kaplan was running through all the strength of the different guys behind amending Bradley. You know, I am is a switch hitter who can You know who's really good at hitting velocity and you know, Brantly, you know, really, really good against left handed pitching, and you know, he's has all this experience Captain When he got the trunk, he said, Well, it's really good that he speaks Spanish. We can all relate to the Spanish speaking so I mean, look, they like him. They sign them. They sign them for depth. I don't think he's going to be on the opening day roster unless something happens to one of the other guys. I still think they're going to go out yet. I still think the start the opening day catchers probably not on the team yet, but it's you know, he's a good guy to have. Trumpets of there. Gotta have them in the background and he's got a pretty good pretty good stick as we saw yesterday. Yeah, yeah, That's an interesting comment. You think that the July 23rd catcher Is not currently with the team. Oh, yeah, I I believe that I mean, you know, I think they have to go out and I knew they're serious at all. They say they're serious about trying to win because in 60 game season, anything can happen if they're serious about trying to win every games, like 2.5 games, so they can't really afford the way it's not that they don't like Tyler Hyneman and Rob Brantley. I mean, they They signed both of them. And they're you know, they're both very good. But, you know, I think that you know, any society made it clear that they need to get a catcher. Just, you know, into the system just to have enough chapters to catch all the pictures and that they have in camp. Andi did say they're going to look internally as well. And I mean, if they don't look, there's nobody out there. They like who wants to play. That's another thing, But considering me, Russell Martin is out there. But he hasn't signed yet. Maybe he doesn't want to play would be a good guy to put back there. You know, it'd be a good veteran presidency knows how to hit all that sort of stuff. But I mean, I really think that they would like somebody with, you know, with a little more than I think. Bradley has 400 something plate appearances in the majors, and most of those were in 2012 and 2013. I don't want that. I'm gonna say they're not quite comfortable yet with the options they have buying the place. Hey, I wonder how far we're diving into the analytic age. Like how married to that? Will this will this group B. In other words, if they're facing Clayton Kershaw In in 10 days, but it's also opening day. I mean, our Brandon Crawford in Mike Strunsky in that lineup, or we put nine right handers out there. What do you think? Yeah. I mean, I don't think that they're going to stand on ceremony here again. Like I said, you know, every game is 2.5 games. I mean, you know, if you're if you're looking at what the way this season is going, um, you know, I mean, I think you know what I think They like this Rimsky against some left handed getting out, you know, separated out the outfield. They don't have that many options. The infield is where they could mix and match a lot might not be ready s on. But I guess either way since belt is, I think four for 60 off Clayton Kershaw, 29 strikeouts. I mean, I would I would have almost. I bet that woman Floris is going to play her space against the Dodgers. And, yeah, they're going to look at stuff like that. I think one thing Capital learned in Philadelphia and I think's idea. Understands also is that you can play analytics all you want, but, you know, at the end of the day, these guys these guys were people and you have to keep the room intact. And that doesn't mean they're going to go to. You know they're going to just constantly worry about players feelings. They're not. I think everybody. Every veteran player in this courthouse understands how far Holmes III Team works, but I don't think you're going to see like every decision made by a computer. That's that's way overblown. And I think that they're gonna you know they're going to be. You also gotta consider defense as well. You know, So if some of the guys who might not hit Kershaw will might be better defenders and run prevention is just as important as run scoring. Well, you know, a lot of fans don't really understand that. Speaking of run prevention, Has there been any talk of an opening day starting pitcher? And does that even mean anything anymore? Yeah, I wrote a story today talking about how they really aren't looking at a traditional one through five rotation because you know they're really not gonna let anybody go warn three or four innings at the start of the season, and that's an analytic based decision to that. There is some research out there that they keep citing that shows that The slower you wrap pictures up with less occurrence of arm injury. You have down the road, so there there, there's going to be. You're going to see openers..

Those were the opening lines of the legendary nineteen seventies TV show. Welcome back kotter where the main character played by Gabe Kaplan returns to his New York City high school to become a teacher. Our next guest has done the reverse Kelley rube. We grew up loving horses and upstate New York grew up to become a middle school science teacher and then left. That stable career to return to the stables on TV, Mr. Qatar dealt with a group of teenage guys who seemed comically incapable of maturing into adults Kelly rudely now a thoroughbred trainer has an equine version of a teenager as three year olds in the spring, basically are, but this guy has done some growing up in the last few months, always mining. We'll have to make a three wide bid and he's willing to do. It always finding up to try for gold as Zinni off the scene now in position less than three alongs to go and always mining now in front from try for goal turning for home in Federica Teissier sakes, all ways mining set down and opens up a four length lead on try for goal always mining with a six now a seven Lang lead always mining robbing home past the Laura line and headed to the Preakness always mining comes into the Preakness on a six race winning streak albeit in races. Quite as rigorous as those on the Kentucky, Derby trail, none the less. The three year old gelding is answered the rhetorical question about dreams that you hear on welcome back kotter who'd have thought they lead you back here where we need you and buy back here. We mean to Maryland where Kelly ruble is based at fair hill with a chance to claim one of the American spring classics, and we welcome trainer Kelly ruby here too in the gate. This horse has made twelve starts already maximum security. Maybe you've heard of him has made five including that whole Kentucky Derby thing. The last nine of always mining starts have come in laurel in the last six of those have been wins, all enlisted or overnight stakes. What's been your philosophy on how to bring them along? He he was purchased by my current owners after his maiden win. So he's only been with me since he ran on the grass in Maryland last summer. So, you know, we've kind of just strategically followed the past the Maryland route tickets where we're at today. What mood the light bulb turn on forum last October when this winning streak started? I wish I could answer that. He's always been a very nice horse. I mean anyone is made nicely. I think the goal was always to stretch out. And they were very limited races for two year olds when we ran them on the grass. So after that we also have to just sit tight and wait till they had a route race for us. And obviously he relished the mile you grew up in central New York, which is not exactly horse country. I know I went to Syracuse. What made you even want to get involved with horses up in that perpetual league gray bleak part of the world. I don't know. I guess it was ever since I could walk or talk I'll ever wanted to do with the around horses. So it was just naturally in me. But yes, it was a little limited. I started writing at a quarter horse barn actually started competing on the quarter horse survey doing jumpers and hunters and from there, but an event horse and started shipping down to the Maryland, Pennsylvania area. And that's kind of how I ended up in the air. Area fair hill. But listen to your parents, you earn two master's degrees. Two masters degrees. It became a middle school science teacher. Now, first of all, they're possibly be a more draining job in the world. And being a middle school teacher. I actually really enjoyed that age the students are you know, there's just starting to develop themselves much like a young horse. So I thought they were a lot of fun. But yes, it's exhausting, and it wasn't necessarily something. I could see myself doing in the future. Which is why I went back and got my second masters for administration inside that for three years. And then decided you know, what horses are meant to be. We what happens you were wearing a suit as an administrator and everything and did you just have an piffle. Or was it a gradual thing it was gradual? You know, even when I was teaching. I went into the administration because the fact that I'd already voted so much of my time, and my education towards the education were also what could I do move up the ladder in that respect? So I tried the administrative row and decided that it was just for me it allowed more flexible hours than my current job. But it just wasn't something. I had a passion for jelly rudely. Rainer of Preakness contender always mining. Joining us here on the gate now before you get to fair hill, which you mentioned you leave teaching school for FOX hunting in Pennsylvania. Is that a thing that was just a job to kind of regroup and see what I was going to do with my life. But yes, I was managing harm, and we accented I we didn't really have an opportunity in where I grew up. I never FOX hunted in my life. So it was a unique experience in something that I greatly enjoy. But it also got me my start with Barclay tag here at their hill. How I started galloping for him here. He had a string at fair hill and my gal for him and then eventually moved up to become his assistant. How do you go from FOX hunting and Pennsylvania to fair hill and being an exercise rider? Well, I mean that job was just pretty much to move me to this area to figure out what I was going to do. And that's. When I met Parkway and became an exercise rider for them with the goal that I would eventually become an assistant and kind of learn the horse racing world from the ground up. What did your parents say about what you chosen to do? With those two masters degrees. They were not thrilled. They still think I'm a little nuts. And the fact that you know, I work seven days a week. And I haven't had a day off and many years, but we've had a little bit of success. They're starting to kind of be what my my goal was a long, and they're you know, they're coming around. But still it wasn't ideal in there is at the time. Well in light of that. How nervous will you when you finally decided to go out on your own? I wouldn't say I was nervous. You know? It was a goal, and I like I'm somewhat of a driven person. And so I had a goal. And I knew when I became an assistant as the idea was to learn as much as I could to have an eventual string of my own, and you know, it came around gradually and worked I way into it. And so it was just a natural flow. Really? I'm guessing you're hoping that the success of always mining will lead to more business how big a stable do you have? And how big would you like it to be? I have about forty horses in training right now. We've had more in the past. I'm a very hands on person. I checked every horse's legs every morning. So I don't know how we'd like to go. We'd like to continue to improve the stable and have a nice allowance level stable. So you know, it just depends on I don't know that there's a magic number to stop at. It's just when I feel like I can't stand up everything that I'm going to have to take a minute and relook at it. It is always morning still in control leads almost two legs. From is six furlongs twelve three sixty s lift to go with like the distances. No problem at all. For always finding always minding kept attest opening up a half dozen on Joey his second and tai-bo third. Always mining wants to run all day, always minding to win it by six or so we've talked on this show recently about the stickiness of the future of the Preakness. But considering that always mining. Is one six in a row with loyal race course and made nine of his twelve career starts there. I'm guessing you personally wouldn't be too opposed to running the Preakness there this year. This year. That'd be perfect. That's going to happen. I mean, how concerned are you that he can bring his race track with him? Even though it's still in the state of Maryland. Actually, I think the Tenneco course going to set him up nicely. It's got a nice long stretch. And he just has a very large scale thing stride. So I I I don't see this the track change to be a problem. We're going to have to do it. Eventually, then I'm guessing you don't mind seeing that just about all of the top derby contenders are going elsewhere now that plays well for us, absolutely more. We certainly wish you the best of luck here. Kelly ruby. Thank you so much for sharing a few minutes with us. Thank you. Thank you haven't. We're going to take our first break here on in agape when we come back. It's time to revisit that whole d Q rule and how it's interpreted on guessing, you know, why we need a refresher. So go

"I didn't know if the diabetic. Bad. Carlson. Now, it should be noted that the Bryce Harper was in the dugout when the unpire apparently threw him out, and that's why gave cap or the manager came out and started arguing and then Bryce Harper comes out and tries to throws manager out of the way to get in the space. Gabe Kaplan, by the way, may be the only baseball manager big enough to keep Bryce Harper away from hick is built like a brick. He's a big kid kit kit. Well, here's the problem Bryce Harper needs to be in the game. Bryce Harper cannot lose his s to the point of ejection. That's not why they paid him all that money and Jake are yet was vocal about it in the post game comments saying about Bryce Harper and his loss of composure. He's got understand we need him in right field. I don't care how bad the empire is. He wasn't great for either side. And we talked about that too. It was just a high strike zone. But he was doing it across the board for everyone. The only thing that they require of unpire. I mean is consistency in all honesty. Now, there are some bad. I'm Pires out there, and they should be drummed out a baseball. And they know who they are. And every they go through a regular review process. Not only. With other empires, but with managers and players as well. So hopefully, they can do major league baseball does his job and gets the bad guys out of there and brings up people from the minor leagues. Just like they would players Bryce Harper is a guy who has twelve objections on his in his career already. Yeah. He has a bit of a temper there's one player who I wouldn't associate with a temper. There's one player who has more objections one active player, I should say Matt Kemp really fourteen but he played a longer career, obviously. But. Do. The idea of putting computers in place of home plate empire is a is a dangerous and a bad idea. Part of what makes sports grade is the human aspect of it and. And and to to this point people lost their minds when they put a clock in center field. You know, what I mean because baseball do not like computers or clocks hell, there's there's a camp that hates analytics and the shift and all of that like they just want the old fashioned baseball. And they don't want any change baseball, people baseball fanatics loathe change. And so to put a computer behind home plate would just be. I think a big slap in the face to the heart of the game. I don't even mind to that end. I being would almost say a purist. But not quite I don't mind replace. I think it's important to get calls like that the ones that are allowed right now. It's important to get those calls, correct? But in terms of balls and strikes being the be all end. All I mean, that's the most human version of officiating that you can get in any sport. I think is the determination of balls and strikes like that. Because there's you know, two hundred two hundred and fifty pitches every single game that the employer has to determine his baller strike about our atas. Comments of we need Bryce Harper in right field. It's troubling. I need my guys behind me. Harper. Agreed. But the assessment saying in a game like that against the Mets division rival, it just can't happen for me myself and his team as well. We're a better team with me in the lineup. And I've got to stay in. There are talked about to how this was a game delayed by what two hours rain, and he said they weren't ready to play. That's the and to that comment by Bryce Harper. That's incredible. Maturity on his part now, can you put it into practice? We'll find out he keep his head about him. When someone makes a bad call and the strike zone or it makes it consistent call that he disagrees with that's the that's the test. I think in terms of that guys growth as a as an athlete, but you know, what the fans in Philadelphia love it. Of course, gosh, I heard that crowd last night. And I was thinking these are my people there was one image. In fact, the video that I saw you could see over his shoulder, and I'll see if I could play it for you. You can see it. There's a there's a dodger.

"Quite a bit. We have a couple of coaches who followed closely. I know some players were really excited about tiger. I can tell you. I didn't watch stroke of it. Okay. But it was it was definitely on in the background. And God we're talking about it. And this is not to change the topic. But with the Mets coming in. I just felt like there was some things that we had we had to attend to. Of course, hope that's understandable, make sense. It's totally understandable. Last thing for you to Gabe. You are one of nine individuals to be fortunate enough to say you were on the field. When the Red Sox broke the curse in two thousand and four Francona kept you in after being a pinch runner kept you on the field. Were you surprised that you were on kept on the field? Did you lobby for what what's this? Is. There any story behind that. So you're on you're on the field for the last out of the World Series. It would because you lobbied for. Think that's awesome. I think I would not a I mean, I was not one of the best nine guys on that on that club. Right. I think what happened in that particular case was we had a pretty strict platoon going. So I would I would bat against left handed pitchers trot. Nixon would that against right into pitchers. And then there's a pretty consistent base running switch towards the end of game for defensive switch towards the end of games. And so that's why I found myself on the field at that time. I felt really lucky in the fact that you don't believe in me at that time was was pretty special for me. And man, I I honestly just feel blessed over the whole thing. Yeah. I don't know. I would have lobbied for maybe that's why I brought it up that way. I love that you I was just kind of envisioning now in the in the manager's position player coming like pay. Please put me on the field. For this very important moment. And just like, yeah. Sure. No problem. Go ahead. I don't know. Maybe the match up you never know. Come just. Hey, thanks for the call gave a hope it's the first of many here to the show really enjoyed our chat. And and it's been a long time. So I appreciate it resigned. Joy to look forward to the next one you bet right back at you. That's Gabe Kaplan, Phillies manager. You're in the rich Eisen show. And if he wasn't studio out of him son a book. The one that's right behind Mike del tufo that book. But is it is it greatest Jews in sports is it what is it with rate? Crazy Jews and support by the way way to go out there and sports there Gabe with chocolate covered almonds. I got there, man. I mean way to go out there you love almonds put the chocolate I too I love chocolate covered almonds, but he's rocked up, man. So he only has a six pack now instead of an eight pack this like, oh, man. Fun chat. When we come back our poll question, we'll finally get to that your phone calls, and again, just watching watching the warriors. Watching the warriors dismantled the clippers. It got close in the third quarter. But watching them just push pull away made me think again of just reiterating one more time how hard I find it to believe that Durant is made a decision on his future and is playing a basketball game. Like he's playing it having decided that eight four four two zero four rich number.

"I mean, you know, like don't just lump me in with everybody else. I mean, you're you're you're you're a super sharp guy. Who's Bank you doing this for a really really long time in your job to have strong opinion. Well, I do that. When I do. I really do. I'm not just you know, I don't make anything up. But I just it. It's just seems to me I want to see more action. I mean, we started this conversation with with Jackie Robinson. And for for a great reason. You know? I mean, the split screen was was invented because he stole basis or not seeing people don't steal basis anymore, but it just doesn't seem to be much action anymore. There's just the doubles and triples in the it just doesn't seem to that. The game has changed. And I just look at the shift, and I blame that. Okay. So I'll get into you conjured up an image of Jackie for me. I I will. I will I will express one strong opinion for you. Thank you. I really enjoyed as a plight. I really enjoyed ads the player the ability to have contact at the plate with the catcher. And I really enjoyed as the player the ability to have contact with the middle infielders a second date. So those those are both things that I think are were really exciting about baseball and kind of made the game. I don't know little little more rugged little rougher a little bit more old school. So the things that I kind of miss about the game that well because you're built like a brick house. I mean that helps that helps you know. I mean that have that absolutely helps in that regard. What is your workout regimen? What is it it it different now? Now, I have I have a chance to just be a manager. What do you mean? Eat whatever I want to clubhouse and come on go, go, go go for a run come on back in my day, and yours when you played, you know, manages didn't look like you. They didn't you know, they just sit there, and they just, you know, they eat some flower seeds and sit on their butts and didn't work out very much. I will say this about our staff in Philadelphia our entire coaching style. Yes. They they are really really good job of getting after it prior to the time that the players arrive at the ballpark. He's got seem like they're constantly sweating. So it's not just the work that they do in the coaches room, you know, analyzing video looking at spray charts studying the opposition. But it's also the physical condition that they do. And I think the reason that notable is because I think that, you know, players wanna know that we're all in this together. And that everybody's willing to work as hard as they are or harder to support them. And I think doing some of the things that they do is actually a good example. So I'm proud of our staff for those things. Okay. So when was the last time you had a simple sugar Gabe like legitimately, like a skittle or something. Like that was the last time. I'll tell you this. I I know you'll probably not believe this. But I ate more chocolate covered on in in. Spring training than I probably like any sweep that. I have in my tire life. I it was like one large Cup of chocolate almond after the other all the way through spring training. So I am talking bomb. Don't sound way. But re I remember I remember they have very thick coating of milk chocolate around him. And That that was was. a pretty a pretty good binge for me. I will accept that. I've got two more questions for you. Gabe Kaplan, Phillies manager here you played a day game yesterday. How how how much was the masters on in the clubhouse locker?.

Lopopolo Billpoint sorry built with is co-founder the longtime coworker of ours. We'll also have Bruce Pearl the Auburn head coach you'll join us a little bit later on. Plus, Gabe Kaplan, or the manager of the Phillies about what went down last night. In Philadelphia as it was a resounding success for one Bryce Harper making his return to the place, he called home in DC, all those. He's in Washington. I any man on first and second nobody out and Bryce Harper's at the plate. I mean, so set up perfectly for him returning there to not only get as I hit in returning. But getting RBI there's max Scherzer gets into Owen to we works at then to two and two and then strikes out. And I mean booed every couple of a couple of people clapping there. But the booing was loud and clear every single time a pitcher who's coming that at one point during that at that. The let's go max chance started for max Scherzer and he struck out. He struck out Bryce Harper. Second time up he struck out Bryce Harper. And you're thinking, oh, this isn't going well double single homerun later three for five out of Bryce Harper. Three Rb is. He did have a couple of strike outs in the home run. So I'd say all went, well and the Phillies one eight to two Harper was a single shy of the cycle. Exactly was you know, the the triple. Yeah. No, there's no better way to come back. And I know you referenced it in jest, but to come back to the place where you just laughed to come back to the we heard, you know, how he felt with the front office and the way that they went about the offers here and certainly the fan reception. There can't there's not a lot of feelings top that. No. In fact, here is Bryce talking about the cascade of booze. He heard in that first at bat. Yeah. Walking to play the first like I said, I didn't know what it's going to be like so the booze kinda.

"Definitely. Today, misery and the club and. You know pit went out there and did his job bullpen came into their job. Franko again by real Mutel one thousand nine just everybody grinding going together. And that's what it's all about. That goes back to his first home run with the Phillies, so not Sunday, but Saturday and just the excitement there, and as I say, it's this if this honeymoon period, this love affair that's raging out of control between Phillies fans and Bryce Harper buddy reward them with a couple of home runs, and and then others get into the mix too. And so they sweep the Braves to start things out can't ask for much better than that. It's after hours with Amy Lawrence on CBS sports radio. Also, I love this this remark from Gabe Kaplan now keep in mind where Gabe Kappler came from. And it also not just his playing tradition mostly with the Red Sox. But also thinking about last year with the Phillies and how rough it wasn't the beginning. Right. So a first time manager at the big league level question for all. The micromanaging moves with the bullpen. But gosh got to feel like he got. The keys to the Ferrari now hit four hundred and sixty feet into the upper deck in right centerfield, his bat speed is just lightning and the bigger the spotlight the bigger the moment the more Bryce John's the bigger the spotlight the bigger the moment the more Bryce shines. Yeah. If you're Gabe Kappler, and you were watching all of this off season actively from afar, though, not too far away. You had to be smiling. Like, the Cheshire cat..

"Jerry. I am. Saw something that just blew me away. For the last two years your beloved New York Yankees. And our judges jersey has been the number one selling jersey in all of major league baseball, and it should be maybe Mike trout could be right there in the same kind of area. But nobody everybody respects Mike trout just off the charts. You never hear anybody saying being bad about that guy. But he's kind of like on a nondescript angels team that never wins. Right. So you don't see him in the playoffs and all that other stuff. But Aaron judge is like a mountain of a man wears number ninety nine. It's the pinstripes. The five to play for God's sake, for God's sakes. That's why he has the number one jersey sales over the last two years and major league baseball, right? Yeah. Nine more. Jerry's familiar not anymore. Who took the top spot. Who do you think? Jed Larry now, Bryce Harper. Yes. Thank you very much. Oh, Philly just signed a. So you got a big fan base are excited. They'll be burning that jersey before too long. Still judge jersey that bet jersey I hope and Phillies cosign for yourself. And Aaron judge jersey. I'm not doing it. I hope the Phillies going the tanks so bad. Gabe Kaplan, it's fired midway through the seasoning, search trash and everybody in the clubhouse. And then they start choking each other outlived to get national views. I mean, it could be a mess. This is that Phillies team is combustible got combust ability all written all over it. So he who you think the top five jersey sales are number five will blow you away. Oh boy. When you think about the the the fan base you understand it. Carper judge Betts, trout Goldschmidt. It's fifth. One is gonna is gonna blow me away your sports guy. Get it kinda Houston's yada, your Molina. Oh my God. Gotta be kidding me. As cardinals battles cardinal fans. They love their ballplayers out there. Come on. That's why Jerry said Goldschmidt. Because that's very smart that the cardinals team. I think is going to be pretty damn good that NL central. You can make a case the NL central NFL analyst and central lottery. Good teams, basically a toss up there. Hopefully, the Mets can compete, and they could be part of that tossup of those four teams in there. Obviously the Marlins suck. And here we go. This is it man we are here opening day and the Sweet Sixteen we barely talked about the Sweet Sixteen which starts back up to the last week. Yeah. I know it is true. But most of the nation is still wrapped in baseball as a couple of spots. Good tonight for. Yes. We oh my God these match drink all New York. Oh, you don't you. Just talk about the best in years, Jerry. I do not think the ratings in New York. Good tonight. I think people will be completely sports out with all the baseball today. I do these are really good manager gambling and everything now. That's right. It's huge huge. The Friday, you get the ratings tomorrow for the college basketball and Mike and effort that gets them. You get all that stuff from CBS stuff easily. Yeah. Boomer, can you get those tomorrow? And you get those boomer for us. I'll do the best. I can. The overnights, but you gotta remember we have CBS N TBS tonight. Right. Did everybody's got access that stuff? Well, let's Jerry gonna consider good or bad. What's the old down from the first couple of rounds? I don't think they'll match what the first couple around said. Why is no Cinderella all your brackets opening day? I think he gets I can tell you right now. I go from interested to not interested. Very quickly is in Oregon, Oregon, Oregon, Oregon, Oregon, Oregon to YouTube aren't Cinderella Oregon. And no, they're really not throwing a power complement one. There Powell championship? Pat. Why they're going came in as a twelfth ranked team at one point Virginia tonight, Jerry. No. But I think they'll give them a game eight and a half point spread fan. Give them a game. You mean the games would be closed. I think with five minutes to go inside it's anybody's. So you think they'll cover the eight half. I do. JJ on the fan. Right. The ducks go for the ducks. Brought to you by town fair tire. Nobody beats town fair tire. Nobody you want the opening day lineup for your Yankees who you're talking to just in general playing that game. So we got the official opening day lineup for the New York Yankees. Like somebody else around here seems to get it all the time. I can specially delivered. Can I? Kazu the.
