"The orange and black KNBR 1045 and six sports leader Thie giants and the Dodgers, and they're going to play two. And in this the year of the pandemic doubleheaders consist of 27 inning game. So will take part of that for the first time here today. I'm John Miller with Gabe Kaplan. Manager of the Giants and gay before we talk about today's game, obviously yesterday the teams into up, not playing and expressing solidarity. With the Black lives matter Movement, but also in particular the police shooting of Jacob Blake. So So where are we now? And is that all something that's everybody has expressed themselves on a TTE. This point? Yeah, I think a lot of people have expressed their their opinions and shared emotions on this topic. And look, it's it's not going away. We? We absolutely denounce. Racism and believe that equality in our sport is critically important, um, and simultaneously are preparing to play two games with the Dodgers today. That's a challenge and we're ready for it. All right, so two games and talking baseball now. Seven inning game. Is that a different kind of managing Versus a regular nine inning major league game. I think you just start to treat the 5th 6th and 7th inning of the game, John like very similarly, as you treat the 7th, 8th and 9th. But the same time you trust your starting pitchers and if they're effective, and they're efficient You let them go. I think it's exciting because you have the potential of no pitcher going and six and getting you to the last inning of the game so very excited to watch Webby pitching in this first game and Hospital. It's the second game for us and excited for that one as well that Guzman was originally scheduled to go in last night's game against Kershaw. So you've kind of flip flop those two with the Web scheduled for today. How come We just reached out to gauze announcement. You got any strong preference and being the better picture? We don't really see much of a strategic advantage going in game one or game too. They're both important games and You know, we're gonna have a job are likely in both lineups. No curse on the mound will be the DHD and Trump will will catch and Trump has had some nice success with Webby thus far, and I just felt like that was a good place to go. All right. So, uh, Bart will be the end. Did you say Bart will be in the line of in both? He'd be the catcher in Game two. You'll be the catcher in Game two. All right, Giants and Dodgers. It's a doubleheader. Not too many of those between the Giants and Dodgers over the years and we'll have more. Gabe Kapler..

"And so like now is The same as the first week in September in my mind, because this team is not going to really get a chance to work out the kinks. Just because of the way things are now constructed. You know what it's going to be a weird year for in every sport for every team. For the Eagles for the new guys for the old guys. I would rather be the team that has the stability given the craziness of this year. Okay? What would you rather be the team that has the stability and the coaching staff or the team that has a better roster with more talent? That appears to be a loaded question. I'm choosing not to answer. Travis, you're on 94. Come on, guys. Collar, Travis. That's awesome. Thank you for calling us. Um, I've been listening to the rain glances. Last fall's Sundays are great with, um and then I've been listened. Ah, um John, you and Joe the whole courtroom debacle. Back in what March? Yeah. Yeah, but I just want to call about the TV quick. Firstly, Glenn, you said it was the Astros is actually the Padres that many of the house yesterday is a team that got Vinnie V from right. The Padres was the team. He did that. I just remember April afternoon and I was there. Yeah, And it was amazing. It was amazing, and I had like a really high praise on TV. I think he does have the stuff. It's just his discipline. And I think you saw that last year when he shook off. J. T Realmuto, and then you're like a little fastball, like for old Durham style and give the home run cold. I mean, if you can get him, like, get his head together, the spline wise, I think he can pull it together. But my my break outside. I think Zach Catholic going to really show it stuff this year. Not gonna have the heavy body issue. I mean, you could you could say Gabe Kaplan was a chip Kelly. You know you bring in Joe Girardi and all. You know the team act differently, so I I think that would give you the guy. Well, John, you said this earlier and this is one thing I agree with. I can't Brian prices, the new pitching coach, huge difference maker. Well, what we had to work with before was a guy who wasn't even a pitching coach. Right? And, you know, now we find out that last year at a certain point, I mean, Zach Eflin basically said there Asking me to do things that I don't feel comfortable doing it, You know, so it and it's what we're gathering with. The new approach with Brian Price is that it's Maur customized, too. What these individual pitchers feel confident doing and what their strengths are. And Everyone speaks glowingly of this guy, A Zagat who lack knowledge wise and a guy who was able to communicate and teach. So yeah, it's going to help. I expect to see an improvement across the board with our pictures. The question is just like, how high are there ceilings? How high can he lift their ceilings? Ah, and I know that it's going to be better. What Are we? Are we now on par with? These teams that we have to play in the AL East like AA, and I don't I don't think the Braves his team in the division, but you know again, I'm going to keep saying this, but I really think it's such an odd year. In every sport that the normal things we used to project. And make predictions are all weird. Baseball is going to be weird. All the sports going anywhere. Travis, give us a great I'm sorry. An unrealistic scene in a sports movie. When Michael Jordan played the tune squad and face Jim Hey, I guess. Sure, sure. Why not? Yeah. John, would you get it dick this that playing Bugs Bunny was not realistic that you want. You know what? Let's Let's do this for a moment. Moshe, give us your ear, all right. Yeah. Okay, let's go through the Ah, the movie scenes and cut a few out, John. Just let's hack away so most read us because we got a bunch. So let's let's just take the good with the 1st 1 we got was the kicking mule. I like that. That's that's a great answer. Okay? We'll keep can't turn my nose up at that. Next. We had Ah, blowing up the golf course in Caddyshack. It's Ah, It's awesome. I mean, class, right? Apparently, we're not losing that one. All right? Happy Gilmore that final hole. The putt Happy Gilmore. The whole movie. Yeah, OK, so much for our attempts to edit down But alright, That's days doing a good job Angels in the outfield. John never saw it, so it's out. That's fair but is good. You'd like your daughter would like. Yeah. Check it out. Alright in the fight, not getting called early in Rocky three. You know what? Let's take all Rocky's out. Just cause there's so many of them. Yeah, OK, lose all the Rockies. And then there was the Ah, the magic baseball from it happens every spring. Ooh, I love that one. But John, you've never seen I haven't seen it. But it does. It fits. Exactly Keep that. Yeah, Yeah, It's good seeing right now we've got Ah, like Mike where the magic shoes make and its little bow. Wow, that may end up being the winner. Yeah, that and then a space jam where Michael Jordan's arm stretches like a rubber band. Let's lose that one. Just cause it's it's a cartoon. All right, So we cut out a few. Yeah, we're doing a good job. I feel better. We accomplished what we set out to do there. Kind of. We'll take more to on 559 to 94 94. John Ritchie. I'm.

Those were the opening lines of the legendary nineteen seventies TV show. Welcome back kotter where the main character played by Gabe Kaplan returns to his New York City high school to become a teacher. Our next guest has done the reverse Kelley rube. We grew up loving horses and upstate New York grew up to become a middle school science teacher and then left. That stable career to return to the stables on TV, Mr. Qatar dealt with a group of teenage guys who seemed comically incapable of maturing into adults Kelly rudely now a thoroughbred trainer has an equine version of a teenager as three year olds in the spring, basically are, but this guy has done some growing up in the last few months, always mining. We'll have to make a three wide bid and he's willing to do. It always finding up to try for gold as Zinni off the scene now in position less than three alongs to go and always mining now in front from try for goal turning for home in Federica Teissier sakes, all ways mining set down and opens up a four length lead on try for goal always mining with a six now a seven Lang lead always mining robbing home past the Laura line and headed to the Preakness always mining comes into the Preakness on a six race winning streak albeit in races. Quite as rigorous as those on the Kentucky, Derby trail, none the less. The three year old gelding is answered the rhetorical question about dreams that you hear on welcome back kotter who'd have thought they lead you back here where we need you and buy back here. We mean to Maryland where Kelly ruble is based at fair hill with a chance to claim one of the American spring classics, and we welcome trainer Kelly ruby here too in the gate. This horse has made twelve starts already maximum security. Maybe you've heard of him has made five including that whole Kentucky Derby thing. The last nine of always mining starts have come in laurel in the last six of those have been wins, all enlisted or overnight stakes. What's been your philosophy on how to bring them along? He he was purchased by my current owners after his maiden win. So he's only been with me since he ran on the grass in Maryland last summer. So, you know, we've kind of just strategically followed the past the Maryland route tickets where we're at today. What mood the light bulb turn on forum last October when this winning streak started? I wish I could answer that. He's always been a very nice horse. I mean anyone is made nicely. I think the goal was always to stretch out. And they were very limited races for two year olds when we ran them on the grass. So after that we also have to just sit tight and wait till they had a route race for us. And obviously he relished the mile you grew up in central New York, which is not exactly horse country. I know I went to Syracuse. What made you even want to get involved with horses up in that perpetual league gray bleak part of the world. I don't know. I guess it was ever since I could walk or talk I'll ever wanted to do with the around horses. So it was just naturally in me. But yes, it was a little limited. I started writing at a quarter horse barn actually started competing on the quarter horse survey doing jumpers and hunters and from there, but an event horse and started shipping down to the Maryland, Pennsylvania area. And that's kind of how I ended up in the air. Area fair hill. But listen to your parents, you earn two master's degrees. Two masters degrees. It became a middle school science teacher. Now, first of all, they're possibly be a more draining job in the world. And being a middle school teacher. I actually really enjoyed that age the students are you know, there's just starting to develop themselves much like a young horse. So I thought they were a lot of fun. But yes, it's exhausting, and it wasn't necessarily something. I could see myself doing in the future. Which is why I went back and got my second masters for administration inside that for three years. And then decided you know, what horses are meant to be. We what happens you were wearing a suit as an administrator and everything and did you just have an piffle. Or was it a gradual thing it was gradual? You know, even when I was teaching. I went into the administration because the fact that I'd already voted so much of my time, and my education towards the education were also what could I do move up the ladder in that respect? So I tried the administrative row and decided that it was just for me it allowed more flexible hours than my current job. But it just wasn't something. I had a passion for jelly rudely. Rainer of Preakness contender always mining. Joining us here on the gate now before you get to fair hill, which you mentioned you leave teaching school for FOX hunting in Pennsylvania. Is that a thing that was just a job to kind of regroup and see what I was going to do with my life. But yes, I was managing harm, and we accented I we didn't really have an opportunity in where I grew up. I never FOX hunted in my life. So it was a unique experience in something that I greatly enjoy. But it also got me my start with Barclay tag here at their hill. How I started galloping for him here. He had a string at fair hill and my gal for him and then eventually moved up to become his assistant. How do you go from FOX hunting and Pennsylvania to fair hill and being an exercise rider? Well, I mean that job was just pretty much to move me to this area to figure out what I was going to do. And that's. When I met Parkway and became an exercise rider for them with the goal that I would eventually become an assistant and kind of learn the horse racing world from the ground up. What did your parents say about what you chosen to do? With those two masters degrees. They were not thrilled. They still think I'm a little nuts. And the fact that you know, I work seven days a week. And I haven't had a day off and many years, but we've had a little bit of success. They're starting to kind of be what my my goal was a long, and they're you know, they're coming around. But still it wasn't ideal in there is at the time. Well in light of that. How nervous will you when you finally decided to go out on your own? I wouldn't say I was nervous. You know? It was a goal, and I like I'm somewhat of a driven person. And so I had a goal. And I knew when I became an assistant as the idea was to learn as much as I could to have an eventual string of my own, and you know, it came around gradually and worked I way into it. And so it was just a natural flow. Really? I'm guessing you're hoping that the success of always mining will lead to more business how big a stable do you have? And how big would you like it to be? I have about forty horses in training right now. We've had more in the past. I'm a very hands on person. I checked every horse's legs every morning. So I don't know how we'd like to go. We'd like to continue to improve the stable and have a nice allowance level stable. So you know, it just depends on I don't know that there's a magic number to stop at. It's just when I feel like I can't stand up everything that I'm going to have to take a minute and relook at it. It is always morning still in control leads almost two legs. From is six furlongs twelve three sixty s lift to go with like the distances. No problem at all. For always finding always minding kept attest opening up a half dozen on Joey his second and tai-bo third. Always mining wants to run all day, always minding to win it by six or so we've talked on this show recently about the stickiness of the future of the Preakness. But considering that always mining. Is one six in a row with loyal race course and made nine of his twelve career starts there. I'm guessing you personally wouldn't be too opposed to running the Preakness there this year. This year. That'd be perfect. That's going to happen. I mean, how concerned are you that he can bring his race track with him? Even though it's still in the state of Maryland. Actually, I think the Tenneco course going to set him up nicely. It's got a nice long stretch. And he just has a very large scale thing stride. So I I I don't see this the track change to be a problem. We're going to have to do it. Eventually, then I'm guessing you don't mind seeing that just about all of the top derby contenders are going elsewhere now that plays well for us, absolutely more. We certainly wish you the best of luck here. Kelly ruby. Thank you so much for sharing a few minutes with us. Thank you. Thank you haven't. We're going to take our first break here on in agape when we come back. It's time to revisit that whole d Q rule and how it's interpreted on guessing, you know, why we need a refresher. So go

"I didn't know if the diabetic. Bad. Carlson. Now, it should be noted that the Bryce Harper was in the dugout when the unpire apparently threw him out, and that's why gave cap or the manager came out and started arguing and then Bryce Harper comes out and tries to throws manager out of the way to get in the space. Gabe Kaplan, by the way, may be the only baseball manager big enough to keep Bryce Harper away from hick is built like a brick. He's a big kid kit kit. Well, here's the problem Bryce Harper needs to be in the game. Bryce Harper cannot lose his s to the point of ejection. That's not why they paid him all that money and Jake are yet was vocal about it in the post game comments saying about Bryce Harper and his loss of composure. He's got understand we need him in right field. I don't care how bad the empire is. He wasn't great for either side. And we talked about that too. It was just a high strike zone. But he was doing it across the board for everyone. The only thing that they require of unpire. I mean is consistency in all honesty. Now, there are some bad. I'm Pires out there, and they should be drummed out a baseball. And they know who they are. And every they go through a regular review process. Not only. With other empires, but with managers and players as well. So hopefully, they can do major league baseball does his job and gets the bad guys out of there and brings up people from the minor leagues. Just like they would players Bryce Harper is a guy who has twelve objections on his in his career already. Yeah. He has a bit of a temper there's one player who I wouldn't associate with a temper. There's one player who has more objections one active player, I should say Matt Kemp really fourteen but he played a longer career, obviously. But. Do. The idea of putting computers in place of home plate empire is a is a dangerous and a bad idea. Part of what makes sports grade is the human aspect of it and. And and to to this point people lost their minds when they put a clock in center field. You know, what I mean because baseball do not like computers or clocks hell, there's there's a camp that hates analytics and the shift and all of that like they just want the old fashioned baseball. And they don't want any change baseball, people baseball fanatics loathe change. And so to put a computer behind home plate would just be. I think a big slap in the face to the heart of the game. I don't even mind to that end. I being would almost say a purist. But not quite I don't mind replace. I think it's important to get calls like that the ones that are allowed right now. It's important to get those calls, correct? But in terms of balls and strikes being the be all end. All I mean, that's the most human version of officiating that you can get in any sport. I think is the determination of balls and strikes like that. Because there's you know, two hundred two hundred and fifty pitches every single game that the employer has to determine his baller strike about our atas. Comments of we need Bryce Harper in right field. It's troubling. I need my guys behind me. Harper. Agreed. But the assessment saying in a game like that against the Mets division rival, it just can't happen for me myself and his team as well. We're a better team with me in the lineup. And I've got to stay in. There are talked about to how this was a game delayed by what two hours rain, and he said they weren't ready to play. That's the and to that comment by Bryce Harper. That's incredible. Maturity on his part now, can you put it into practice? We'll find out he keep his head about him. When someone makes a bad call and the strike zone or it makes it consistent call that he disagrees with that's the that's the test. I think in terms of that guys growth as a as an athlete, but you know, what the fans in Philadelphia love it. Of course, gosh, I heard that crowd last night. And I was thinking these are my people there was one image. In fact, the video that I saw you could see over his shoulder, and I'll see if I could play it for you. You can see it. There's a there's a dodger.

"Sure. Do not let it go to the subject of where are you going to go? Or did you just talked about? Again. It's just more me offering. Look at this. It's not me offering information to them if he wants it. I. It. Sure sounds like we saw skins is is doing some pitch work for the Phillies there. God. I love racing. He's the he's the guy. He's very much the face of the franchise sell the franchise leader in the clubhouse all that stuff. But I don't think it shouldn't be lost than anyone that Reese Hoskins agent is Scott Boris and Scott Boris help get to the table. Sure it does. So you have reached there at the press comes. And I think that's a leader type of thing to be at that press conference today, they introduce their so far their biggest then name acquisition. They paid big money. James pauses. Yeah, Jay's but his mustache left came back from the Mariners. So you have Clint. Everyone was there. Gabe Kaplan, by the way, I was gonna say for all my fellow Gabe Kaplan fans out there. But I'm not sure how many there are. But if anyone has a Gabe Kaplan shirts. It's outdated. He changed his number. He gave his number twenty two Andrew mccutchen. And they said Gabe would never adjust. He's already adjusting. He's number nineteen now which he was when he played for the Boston Red Sox. So when they won the World Series. That's right. All it's all lineup. Now, the third piece of news, and then we'll get to a couple of rumors stuff and then back to the phone lines here. The third piece of news today was McClintock who took some time. After the Andrew mccutchen presser to jump on MLB network talk about the Phillies offseason. Just listen to this. Because it's been a lot of panic around here that oh my goodness. Manny Machado hasn't signed visited the White Sox. The sky is falling and Bryce Harper president sign every day. Someone's got a rumor about how they're not going to get either they might not. But here's a can kind of laying out what they've done and what the blueprint is for the rest of this off season. I think we've done the things that we set out to do which was improved the defense to become a little bit more left handed and improve our offense. And that puts us in a position now for the remainder of the. Off season where we can really explore a variety of opportunities. But we've we've we've kind of established the floor for off-season. So now, we can we can target big ticket free agents. Like, you're talking about we can continue to explore trade possibilities that might make sense for us. But you know, we've we've done the a lot of heavy lifting early in the off season that allows us to to play out the rest of the winter heavy lifting, and it sounds to me they're like they they're not done. I don't know what's going to happen with Chato and Harper, and we know Machado was slated for a visit here on Thursday. He was with the White Sox last couple of days with the Yankees tomorrow. And he'll be here in Philadelphia on on Wednesday on Thursday me. I don't know how this plays out. But I do know the we're far from all this off season has a lot a lot of time to go. And this been the last couple of days. It's just been feeding that fear that these guys aren't gonna come here. Like, Andy macphail talk the talk to Todd's, then we'll be dot com. Was like, yeah. Like, we don't need to sign. Anybody? We could approve another other ways, which is true, which is absolute. True. But to put it out there that way gives the feeling that they're not going to do anything. And and the bottom line is there's a lot of time left last thing to hit on in our hassle. Checking tonight, we'll Cinerama Searle buddy who came in here last year when he can hit on it could play could hit he really could play sign with the Mets. So here's the bottom line on that the Mets have gotten better canot and Diana's and romo's. The Braves added Donaldson. The nationals added Patrick Corbin the Phillies improved this office. Mccutchen is an improvement secure is an improvement. They made the defense better. They still a lot of work to do them. A lot of work to do if they're going to be a team that can actually get near the top of the right now, I would make the case of the fourth-best roster in the NFL. He's now, I think the gap between one and four tight and all four could be above five hundred good teams. But I think they're fourth right now, and they have worked to do. Well, that's Harper Machado or trade for pitching or whatever. Or get a bullpen piece. There's more. More work to be done and also Macklin better be right about Hoyle far because he let Ronald swapped to the Mets for a pretty reasonable price. Two years nineteen million dollars eight eight seventy nine nine four nine four hot. So check in the books. Let's go back to the phone lines. Three question. Thursday, foles and Jif northeast Philly wants chicken on the fills as well. What's up, Jim? Okay. I know here's why the why they can't get Machado Harper. But here's three reasons why at Christopher Russo and Ken Rosenthal. I am quoting now. There's three roadblocks number one. Chris Russo said like well, okay, Machado met with Yankee say for about in the house. So he said, the Philadelphia Phillies fans will not stand. Okay. Also, he started he has won the field field issues. I don't know what the off field issues are. But now to get the he doesn't have any off the, okay. Okay. So Christopher Russo not telling the truth by here's where you going Jim before you go on. And I want to hear your points. Christopher Russa's just offering opinions. He said opinion, it's now, right? But Ken Rosenthal. Kendra? I will take his opinion on this a little differently because he comes from an informed reporter view. So he's got some information. Russo. But he's he's just giving his thoughts. Right. Right. Right. Okay. Their opinion. I'm just saying this was an option could happen. No, Ken Rosenthal. Stated to other facts one. She Bryce Harper Lyster limelight. He likes to Hollywood scene. Okay. He does not want to be number two in the city. Like where you have a Carson wedge that was said okay now, wait a second. Carson. According in Carson Wentz. What they like Carson Lynch was the main, you know, star in town for a while. And if he comes in shake corporate, I should be the number one star in town Jenin Jim in cali- in Los Angeles. They have LeBron James. He wouldn't even close the number one. I know that's so don't make any sense. But he said. The common Sanchez. He'd wanna go to LA because. Oh, he can get make more money with advertisements and all this. So, but the third thing that was brought up was that does a very little poplar part of the fan base. It really follows the Phillies. They said, it's a football basketball and hockey town, and the fans real a majority of fans aren't really gonna be upset if they don't get either I want either I will not accept an issues by Littleton who came out and said, it might be hard for what we want to throw the whole house get them. They never setbacks. Dave better him because I know a lot of people get upset Ryan, Jim you're right on that. Last part. I appreciate your phone. Call people will be upset, and they should be the owner says there been stupid money. There are two generational players out there. Go get one of them. And if they make the biggest offer to one or both and those guys for whatever reason decide comfort or whatever takes them somewhere else. That's that's on them. And you can't really force a player to come to your team. You can make the biggest offer. That's my expectation. They will have the biggest offer to one or both of these guys if they land neither. But they have the biggest offer to both or one. That's a different story if they don't go to those lens, then that's on them. And that that's ridiculous that point because these are generational players eight at eight seventy nine nine four nine four. Yeah. I think we're just looking for reasons why these guys might not come here. But let's play out this time and until these guys sign here or somewhere else. They're still available. There's a lot of offseason. Go. It's like every day said, well, they're not coming here for some reason every single day that passes where there's not much room. It's the. Yeah. I just don't know where they're gonna go like the Yankees and Machado that makes a lotta sense. And I if I had a bet that's where I bet, but I I still don't I can't find the perfect fit for Bryce Harper. And until the Phillies are out I still think there in eight hundred seventy nine ninety four ninety four. Now, let's get back. Jack was happy for ten minutes. Now, it's making upset again because we have talked about Nick foles. And the reason he gives us fan base. More confidence in at any point this season. Eight eight seven seventy nine nine four nine four. Four also three questions Thursday off a falls, which of course is about clutch athletes. Steve in a harbor is up next. Hey, steve. Good. See? What's up, buddy? Yeah. Yeah. Like, you guys were saying I mean, the one thing you gotta like about Nick foles is he does he gives his receivers an opportunity to make the bowl. That's that's would also on jeopardy was no foreign Chicago's wrote a bowl up the man doesn't have hands. Yes caused the man just has gigantic cans and anything in his Senate. He vacuum up. That's just the way he's always been. Yup. And he's not he's not going to create a ton of space. So if you're gonna if you're gonna involve them in the offense, you have to trust them, and you have to put some touch on the ball. And like that I pass he hit him in the first quarter up the right line. The thing of beauty. It was. And I don't think I watched it a couple of times. I don't think he had more than one yard of separation. He wasn't wide open, but falls put it in his hands. Yeah. I want to just one other question because here's one thing. Everybody sits crushing wenches our franchise. We don't know if he's a franchise quarterback. Yes. She had a great year last year. Yes. You can do some things with some of the things that he stopped doing this year he stopped taking off and maybe that was because of his back. But when he stopped doing something that makes you a better quarterback. Like, he did he he had opportunities in the Dallas game to break containment a few times. And didn't that means? He's not right. And he's never should have been on the shouldn't have been on the field for this games. But people are saying he's a franchise quarterback. I remember three years ago. A guy had a very very big year. Okay. Thirty five touchdowns fourteen interceptions forty five hundred yards. Okay. He's got that same real wind up that cost you went size. And I'll tell you what they thought he was going to be a franchise quarterback. He runs you can make plays off his feet. His name is Blake Bortles. If you look at Carson Winston played there that same wind up where they bring the ball down and then up over, and they cause a lot of foam was that way. When you do that. You give the opportunity for the defense. You get that extra half stepper steps to get in the way. Because it does take a little time to do that. Why it does I will say this to be fair. I don't believe Bortles did that with an eleven two record. So the difference is the playoffs and he he didn't make the playoffs. And you lost the New England at your in New England. No, no, no last year. He didn't have that fifteen two thousand fifty United. I don't think the Jaguars made the playoffs in two thousand fifteen and went to New England. Steve I think they did I'm gonna call you on the no on that one. But we'll look it up. And if I'm wrong, I will if I'm wrong. I will admit that Steve while we do that. Let's play three questions Thursday, right? Sure. All right. I'll give you some clues or five and eleven they were five and eleven I give you some clues. You give me the clutch athlete that we are talking about clue number one. Yeah. Music. You're there we go regard right number one. NFL.
Jacob DeGrom of New York Mets wins NL Cy Young Award
"The Cy Young award winner. Anyone who debated or thought other than that doesn't understand baseball or follow it closely or not he got twenty nine of the thirty first place votes. Max Scherzer got one. And of course, degrom got that voters second place votes. Scherzer's got all twenty nine other second place votes. So they kind of ran away from the field. Aaron Nola the Phillies. More power to 'em had a phenomenal season. Good for Aaron got twenty seven. Of the thirty third place votes. She got one fourth two fourth place votes and one fifth place while was far ahead of Kyle Freeland who finished fourth in the Cy Young bounding but good for Jacob degrom. He wins the NL and the winner in the American League was Pike's. Now took it over Justin Burland race a lot. Closer new American League snout got seventeen first place votes. Berliner got thirteen. So is actually pretty close. But I will tell you why both Blake's now and Jacob degrom won their respective Cy youngs. Three letters e r. A for all the turnover in baseball and the over analytics of baseball and the new stats they have for baseball. The key stat in pitching is still earned run average who on the AL crown for ERA this year that would be breaks now who won the earned run crowned in the National League. And it wasn't close. Jacob degrom that why those two guys are deci young. So I was glad see kudos to the voters voted in these and have different guys vote for different awards and the like, so I give credit to those who voted for those two pitchers because they were bad their best pitchers in their league. This year they deserve to win. They both rightfully get their Cy youngs. Why because they had the best earned run averages any American League. Now, I think it was maybe somewhat telling the Phillies made a move. They changed their pitching coach. I actually thought recruits did a pretty good job this year the last couple of years under peak mechanic, and I wasn't a big fan of his pitching coach. I thought the police should have made a move there prior to they never did delay let mechanic go, and then they put a whole new staff together and elevated recruits on gig Kappler staff and a broaden Chris young who hadn't been doing scouting work for the Astros his first year as a pitching coach. He was the assistant pitching coach here in Philadelphia. And I guess he opened some is and impressed some people and they wanted to do something to change his coaching staff. Some many decided would be at the pitching coach position. So they let go and Chris young will be the Phillies pitching coach for this upcoming year. I don't quite get it. I don't understand it. I don't think Kratz Cranach was the biggest problem this year. Although I did go back and check the Phillies numbers again. Tonight. And I had forgotten how mediocre they were on the pitching side. This side of the guy who finished in third place in the Cy Young Aaron Nola the league ERA this year. Average dead average that's detrimental. That's not great. If your average you gotta be above average. If you want to have any kind of a winning season the league average for earned run average this year. Was four point zero two in the National League here. The Philly pitchers that had ER as above. Are under four point zero to that Curtis who I I always liked Curtis. And I don't quite understand why they didn't give him a chance this past year. He's a lefty us top one lefties, and I thought he should have been given a better chance. He was only in seven games Ziara was sub to at one eighty six do Brera Mosul. Be part of the bullpen again. This year. Aaron Nola initiate who. I know is the IRA ended up at two two point five nine, but I'm tired, and I don't I don't care about knee shack anymore. He's got issues. He's not tough. He doesn't want the ball. He was great at home for long stretches this season. But he was also injured. He's blatantly overpaid going into this year. His ERA says decent year, my eyes. Tell me not really so Arana was solid at two seven three. He'll be back again this year cer- Anthony to ninety five he may be closer feed. Not he's going to be a key component near Penn. Avalon who came over in the trade didn't pitch a whole hell of a lot five and two thirds innings. But at least he did keep his ERA onto four Tommy hunter who I didn't think cat a good year. But his ERA was under four at three point eight zero. Didn't get as many strikeouts. He doesn't walk is a game. Crazy doesn't walk a ton. But I'll give them enough credit that he got it under four and Aaron Morgan at three eight three and Jake Arrieta three nine six so Ariana which just below just above average this year just above. And by the way, I expected a lot more but better than the rest of the pictures. Davis four one five not good enough. Zach f one four thirty six not good enough. Delo Santos who dominated and AAA got a couple of shots in the big leagues. Including a couple of starts. Four seven four. Not good enough. Nick Vada four seven seven not good enough Vinnie Velazquez, four eighty five not good enough. Jake Thompson who they moved on from Hector Narus actors Hecht is the kind of pitcher is gonna get manages wired. Gabe Kaplan is going to get fired because act the narrows, they're probably it'd be a couple of other contributing reason. But Hector narrates will be part of it five ten, and I know he got hot at the end of the year and actually gave him some good outings in September. You wanna make captain Ariza? Key component your pen next year, you go there. I'd rather not. And so on and so forth down to the Jared. I'd coughs in the world and the mine hall. We Milner at a world. Just not good enough to Phillies don't have enough pitching. And nobody's talking about the Phillies upgrading their pitching during this off season. It's all about Harper and Machado, and if not are Machado, we only get one. What are the other moves going to be they need upgrade the pitching? And just making Chris young. They're pitching coach isn't going to be enough for my money. So have you wanna get on on the Phillies Aaron Nola congrat- vision? Third in the Cy Young had a hell of a season wanted a better starting seasons. We've seen in a while. You gotta go back to Lee and holiday and hamels in the light. We're good couple of removes for years removed from having a to ace and affiliates. Did have a ace in Aaron Nola this year didn't quite get the Cy Young, but he did finish third which he should get props for eight eight seven to nine ninety four ninety four Steve from the Poconos checks in. Hey, steve. Joanie? How are you doing match? Really good to talk to you, my pledge, you what's on your mind tonight. Garissa? I just want to say

"And I think that turning point was when, Justin Turner returned to. The lineup ironically he goes back on the deal now but I think just his presence in the lineup helped turn. The tide and you, know it's it's not a coincidence yeah you take a look at it Gabe Kaplan was, around the dodgers a lot and we all know that connection and, you see day agape is kind, of adopted the same thing in Philadelphia with the warm welcoming approach and also and spring training he was talking about being Bolden In trying to get this team to think a little bit. Bigger than what the expectations were after seeing the Phillies and been able to see, them this year and see what they've, been able to do now, since we're past the all star break what are. Your thoughts on the Philadelphia Phillies here yeah great question I'm glad, you, brought them up you, know gave Kappler was a finalist for the dodgers job. It was him and Dave Roberts in fact going into. Meetings and replacing. Don Mattingly manager Gabe. Kaplan was the, front runner he was the head. Of the minor league system here. With the dodgers he. Was a far Huns ID and Andrew Friedman president of baseball operations guy here with Los. Angeles, everybody thought he was going to be, given the job they knew he would be a manager at some point. Dave Roberts actually, came, in eighth his first. Interview, and then put their entire idea. And. Of who would be the next manager, influx and eventually won out that. Job over gave Kappler but Gabe knows this dodger system very well he knows how they handle things game, Kappler was part of the, guy that changed the meal plan The diet and. The training at the minor league levels in the minor league system so I guarantee you he implemented a lot of what he learned here in Los Angeles and a lot of what this team and the culture is about in Philadelphia another guy we're not. Even talking about is valid from pappalo's, former GM in Toronto who spent two seasons in? The, front office. With the dodgers he goes over. Now to, Atlanta and look at what the Braves are doing. As well no question that kind, of culture, that you saw happen in Los Angeles over, the past few seasons that breeding. Into baseball and you're seeing the success of having with the Braves with. The Phillies with the dodgers and so it's it's funny to think but you know especially early in. The season when gave baffler was having some trouble pulling. In pitching pitchers and fans were booing in that he. Might end up being the National League manager of the manager of the year when all is said and done as far as the Phillies are concerned I think that'd be a great. First round matchup I also think they're probably. One year ahead of where they thought. They would be I thought they were making that big next step you know getting getting you know some some big free agency this year some of the guys coming into their own getting a jake arrieta onto that front ben pitching staff getting an all star in aaron nola i think they thought they would take a step here maybe compete for the wild card but i think there ahead of schedule here in the fact that they could run away and win this n._f._l. east so that's the question heading into the trade deadline here in a couple of days is do they want to go for it this year and ad because they're kind of playing with house money at this point that'll be a question for them obviously they wanted manny machado think they finished third in the sweepstakes getting him so do they add another big big armed and they added another big bat or do they kind of hold tight see how far they get this year and then go for it in the off season for next year which is the year i think they were thinking they compete talking to michael do art day right now on c._b._s. sports radio.

"I guess it's kind of what he does he's more worried about here and now than the ninth inning he'd rather get the out in the seventh and worry about the ninth like like doing this job right here i always feel like they don't sit on the topic that you have do it worry about tomorrow tomorrow to worry about the nineteen i can understand not worrying about tomorrow or the following day but the next any nor to yeah you have to worry about that night so in other words he can't say we have such a such match up coming up tomorrow against such and such pitcher meaning like i may have a different pitcher going on now i'm gonna need this guy tomorrow he can't do that you gotta manage for that night and yes you do have to think about the eighth and ninth inning while you're doing stuff earlier in the game you just do you do you just do fifty nine percent of people are happy with the state of the phillies right now that's a good thing that's a good thing twenty two hundred votes at mark's reese wip supporting gabe kaplan with the bullpen not so much seventy nine percent say they do not support what he's doing with the bullpen seventy nine percent seventy nine percent say no not surprising at all we'll give you the the starting lineups coming up here in a in a little bit angry al checking in angry he's the charter founding member of the gabe kaplan fan club here in the delaware valley yeah oh hail i'm just call you double hey well i you know what he's trying to say what he made that statement that i'm in game put her in thank you come on man everybody's say give them a break and this and all the rest of that have you had him a break can we look at this guy this guy has no clue workup to how to actually manage baseball team gives you see al here's where i grew there but that says analytics let me give you the example i if he's looking at numbers look at the numbers and say well we're not doing very well in the eighth and the ninth inning i should change what i'm doing here's another thing he brought it out of morgan left on left last night morgan's actually much better against right handers than left handers the numbers prove that out so i don't i don't think he's looking at a computer and deciding everything based on numbers because he making these making a lot of moves without numbers here but i think he's using the numbers but he's using little catholic away reinvent something here improve something to the wall and you know what i got time for that man i mean not even being here next baseball season time for him to try to crap is going to work it's a joke seriously joke to watch and then the doing halfway kelly phillies it allan allan.

"Analytics folks just go right back to worshiping at the altar of the spreadsheet and the numbers and they go back to defending gabe kaplan so the phillies i i come back from dinner last night after turning off the tv and discussed i go to my major league that app and i see what the phillies are up like nine to one eleven to one thirteen to one sixteen to one eighteen to one twenty to one what's going on and then here come the analytics folks nobody complaining about the analytics now as analytics had anything to do with the twenty two one victory here mr analytics okay first of all i do not discount that analytics are reported the game i do not discount any time you can potentially use information to tweak what you do but when you worship at the altar buttocks that's where you lose me and i had numerous examples why it doesn't make any sense at all make any sense why a little bit information makes people think they're really really smart they're waiting they were waiting i guess analytics did a good lineup tonight i guess analytics really really showed well tonight twenty two one memo mr analytics i could've made out that lineup card before walking into five thirty mass yesterday afternoon i could have sat in my car looked at the phillies lineup and texted it to gabe kappler i could have looked at the phillies roster knowing it well texted gabe kaplan the starting lineup and not needed any analytics to do it and you know what my team could've scored twenty runs to amazing unbelievable i know some of the early analytics folks will be up i know they'll be up and if they're welcome to join us at anytime that they wish at eight five five two one two four cbs eight five five two one two four cbs when we return earlier this calendar year we saw an amazing team when an amazing championship by overcoming amazing odds now an nba team is going to potentially have to try to do the same thing it's the.

"What what i'm sorry i that doesn't make any sense to me but this is baseball in two thousand eighteen this is what happens and and all i will say is i will be at citizens bank park later today and my new favorite thing in life is going to be the gabe kaplan press conferences i loved having gabe as a weekly guest on a show i did with the late darryl hamilton gabe kaplan was one of my favorites literally it didn't have a name but it was always what would game kappler saying sitting with some of the philadelphia writers today who see again yesterday that i'll see you again tomorrow i dunno mike daisy do this damn overnight show each other also but seeing some of them they said that they have been doozy's and today was an absolute doozy talking about what his focus is like like he's like in zen us out there man well let's move now and talk about the story of the last two days in major league baseball and that is japanese star shohei ohtani seth who became the first player in baseball history to win a game on the mound as a starting pitcher and then hit a home run as a designated hitter he hit his second home run here and this one came against corey kluber on wednesday which is more impressive than the home run that he hit on tuesday in my opinion because kluber is one of the top pitchers and all baseball despite a shaky spring are we starting to see the dynamics that otani can bring to the angels it's the big relief at least for a couple of days for the angels in their owner arte moreno because you know he looked lost in spring training but you know it's a huge culture shock and i've talked to players about coming over from japan and you know it's more about the adjustments off the field but the field is actually the only place where things actually makes sense.

"And replay has just gotten way way out of control more than anyone thought was necessary that should have been a win win for the tigers and the pirates ended up winning thirteen to ten in thirteen innings i didn't see this yesterday but i heard about the phillies avenue manager gabe kaplan and he's like a lot of these new managers never been a manager before younger guy analytically driven you know that's the new wave right maybe gave kaffir should have had a little managerial experience because yesterday in atlanta he brought in a pitcher that hadn't been up in the bullpen and it's a little unclear exactly what happened but the umpire allowed the pitcher to take more warmup tosses the the quote from jerry lane the crew chief for whatever reason the picture wasn't even getting ready who got crossed up i'm not placing blame on anybody because i don't know but he wasn't ready hadn't thrown a pitch and the last thing i want to do is get somebody hurt so he let him throw more pissed off the braves manager he ended up getting the jackson gabe kappler said afterwards any time we have a miscommunication that miscommunication is my responsibility so i take full responsibility for it i mean it's third game as bigly manager and you bring a pitcher into the game who was sitting out in the bullpen and not thrown a single warmup pitch that ain't good we got these new ally of all these new managers most of them have had no manager experience aaron boone hadn't even been a coach anywhere a broadcaster and they're doing a lot of different things and aaron judge playing center field and he might even be batting leadoff would seems kinda crazy and you know we saw the astros using four outfielders i saw the other day and it actually work because it was a fly out and they moved bregman out to the outfield but that's kind of crazy we see a lotta pitchers batting eighth in the order now i know tampa bay is considering using a bullpen for an entire game every fifth day having a four man rotation and then every fifth day just using the bullpen i mean i'm i'm fine with taking a look at things and just because things have been done one way for a.
