"Detroit residents. The wall was going to happen because we didn't have the power to do anything about it. Search for into america wherever you're listening now and follow again. New episodes every thursday morning. Nbc's tom in tokyo. Thank you and then the other big headline this morning. The cd yesterday issued new mask guidelines now recommending fully vaccinated people wear masks indoors in low vaccination areas. Nbc's gabe gutierrez has the latest another about face the cdc once again recommending indoor mask wearing even among vaccinated people in areas with high transmission rates. Saying that while vaccinated people rarely get covet new data shows that they do get infected with the delta variant. They could be carrying higher levels of the virus than previously thought increasing the risk of infecting others. This new guidance underscores how serious the situation is for certainly for unvaccinated people for vaccinated people as well president biden weighing in on mandating vaccines for all federal employees. Done a consideration right now. But you're not you're not really smart but new. Cdc guidance on mask is this sharp. Turn from just two months. Ago is a great day for america when vaccinated americans were told they no longer needed to mask up indoors in washington vice president harris seen wearing a mask indoors because of rising cases there nearly two thirds of us counties have high or substantial cova transmission including most of georgia where some are skeptical of how effective this new mask guidance will be just feel about like free light. The breathe air multiple states have passed laws restricting local governments from imposing mass quarters. Many of those states now have high transmission rates so in effect the new guidance will be more of a recommendation than a mandate in another swift reversal. The cdc is now advising everyone in k. through twelve schools to wear mask indoors even teenagers who were vaccinated to hear that not only validates but we assures us that we've been executing decisions in the right direction. Dr lisa herring the superintendent of atlanta public schools. Who just days ago announced that her district would adopt an indoor mass mandate. What do you tell parents who say look. The government is not going to tell me what to do with my kids. So we've heard those voices and we recognize an honor that we have a responsibility as the school system to be responsible for all students. A household has responsibility. For those that are within it across the country a patchwork of school policies. The nation's three biggest district's new york los angeles in chicago will require masks in houston and miami dade county there optional umbria in atlanta so frustrated. She's decided to home school. Her eleven year old daughter is confusing to parents. One could school dishes going this way but once school history of few miles of the highway is different. The cdc director says she realizes this new mass guidance is unwelcome news that it weighs heavily on her but it is not a decision. Officials took lightly joining us now. The director of vaccine education center and attending physician in the division of infectious diseases at children's hospital of philadelphia. Dr paul off at he's also a member of the fda has vaccine advisory panel. Dr off. it i'd like to start with. Can you explain mask-wearing guidance and the potential for vaccine mandates. I guess the big question is what is the danger of the delta variant continuing to go through the country. Why must we prevent it right well. The the delta variant is far more contagious in the first two variants that came into this country. The first one so-called thirteen g variants swept through europe swept through asia. Swept through the united states called five hundred million killed or killed five. Hundred thousand people here then the second variant the alpha very shed ten times more virus than you did that i very with this very the delta you shed a thousand times more virus. It's highly contagious. And that's why it seeks out an unvaccinated population. I think what changed. I think would surprise us. All was that a few months ago. We were vaccinating. Three to three and a half million people a day and the assumption was that we continue to do that. The people would see this vaccine for what it was which is a ticket out of this pandemic and instead we fell off a cliff so we have actually fewer than fifty percent of the population vaccinated which is far less than we need in order to stop spread the delta variant and it just a disappointing uptake. This vaccine has put us in this position. Doctor let me read. Mark thieves in a former chief speech writer for george w bush is written this morning. The washington post vaccinated. Americans are more likely to die from a lightning strike.

I'm doing better one of many times. Donald trump insulted jeb bush jeb son however cast his lot with the former president in a bid for texas attorney. General texas is precious and we must protect her. under the leadership of president trump. our country was strong and vibrant again. So how did trump return the favor by endorsing george bush's republican rival. That's what we've been trying to tell people about five years now. Tried to tell paul ryan off and on air before he endorsed donald trump the day or two africa. The racist that he's a bully. You don't you you don't negotiate with volleys and you don't grovel because when you grovel with volleys they spit in your face. And that's what's happened. Time and time again with the republicans and you know again all this groveling. What is it got in the republican party. Well minority status in the senate minority senate the house. They've lost the white house they now seem to be a. They're there to the two main planks right now. Seem to be voodoo when it comes to healthcare letting people continue to die. They're they're they're on the side with Wild addy vacs conspiracy theorists and and then basically forgiving the islands of what happened on january. Six trying to forget the violence trying to ignore the insurrection. So voodoo and violence. That's really that's really not something that a party wants decide up with but make again though on this personal front. You can not suck up to a bully. It never works. It didn't work for paul ryan. It didn't work for the republican party. And it didn't work for george george. Bush should a guy who i followed his career and really liked what i saw. It's it's unfortunate to say the way they had to deal with like say what happened over the past four years and he would if now with his fate was and also make a really quickly ted cruz in his own state. Donald trump suggested that. Ted cruz is father assassinated. John f. kennedy ted cruz said that a donald trump are the ugliest things about ted cruz. His wife just shameful things and ted cruz sr through his family under the bus politically and and basically kept sucking up to a guy who insulted his family. It's just. It's not something that we've really seen in washington where people can insult family members. And and you still have this. This is big suck up that we just keep saying and it never pays off in never pays off. That's that guy just will never understand these. These people suck up to trump and it never pays off for them. Well it's called. I mean seventy five million. People voted for guy who was willing letting people die from the corona virus. Hundreds of thousands of people is not even an exaggeration or metaphor. it's a cult and you see that cult within the gop and there's a split between those who are members of it and those who are not and you can see it on full display. As congress begins the investigation into the january sixth insurrection. Kevin mccarthy cult. Member is now taking shots at members of his own party for their willingness to serve and it all comes at another perilous point for the country. The body politic has been so poisoned that americans would rather get cova then a vaccine to keep them alive and we'll talk about ways to change that but if you watched our show yesterday you heard joe making a strong push for vaccine mandates for healthcare workers nursing homes teachers and other employees under federal jurisdiction and as the day went on. We saw a number of new vaccine. Mandates rolled out across the country. California new york city now requiring vaccinations or weekly testing for all their employees and the department of veterans affairs is now the first federal agency to issue a vaccine mandate which would require frontline workers to perceive kodak. Seen shots in a moment. Nbc's gabe gutierrez has a report from alabama the state with the lowest vaccination rate in the country but first nbc news correspondent. Miguel almaguer has the latest on the pivot towards mandates well before any false surge. Some hospitals across the nation are already struggling to manage the sixty thousand new daily cove infections. Plaguing the us as icu's fill up some models suggest our nation could see upwards of four thousand deaths a day by october. The one hundred million americans who are unvaccinated driving the numbers and the risk even for those who are inoculated if you allow the virus to freely circulate because many people are unvaccinated you give it yet again. Another opportunity to mutate even more and you may wind up with creating a variant. That in fact is alludes to protection of the vaccine. As new inoculations plateau pfizer and madonna. At the fda's urging are expanding the size of their vaccine studies in children five to eleven amid rare reports of heart inflammation in younger americans. A precautionary move like the idea of bringing back masks indoors. Nationwide said to be under active consideration. Saint louis county joining savannah georgia and re implementing the policy. These numbers are too alarming to ignore as major medical organizations save. Vaccinations should be mandatory for healthcare workers. The department of veterans affairs became the first federal agency to require. Vaccinations for medical staff. Veteran.

"Nightly news. with lester holt. Good evening everyone night. After night on this broadcast during the worst days of the pandemic we took you inside. Crowded ers retold. The stories of people dying alone isolated from family ventilators breathing for them. We were a nation largely in lockdown. And we were counting the days until science. Develop a lifesaving vaccine tonight. We are a nation rich in vaccines but low on trust and with so many still shunning cova. Vaccinations or ineligible for them. The head of the cdc's has we are potentially facing a pandemic of unvaccinated. Some of it appears to be driven by gross misinformation which we'll take a closer look at it in a moment but first the building wave of new cases and the risk for the unvaccinated as more cove hotspots emerged this summer. Miguel almaguer starts off our coverage. Tonight you misery in the metrics as the numbers trend in the wrong direction fueled by the highly contagious delta variant and unvaccinated americans. New infections are spiking seventy percent hospitalizations climbing thirty six percent as desks rise. Twenty six percent. This is becoming a handle of the unvaccinated. We are seeing outbreaks of cases in parts of the country that have low vaccination coverage because unvaccinated people are at risk with nearly a third of the nation still not vaccinated and coded cases rising almost every pocket of the country. The cdc says last week four states accounted for more than forty percent of new infections. One in five coming from florida in nevada the feds are deploying a team of one hundred to desperately boost inoculations and after l. a. county required masks inside public spaces again for all ten million residents other regions are now also recommending the vaccinated us face coverings indoors. Ten for like twenty steps backwards authorities in los angeles are trying to prevent what's happening in springfield missouri where doctors and nurses or expanding the icu. But losing more young lives. We will do our best to try to get you home. But there's no guarantee that you're going to leave. And i think that is something that every unvaccinated person needs to think about amid protests over vaccine mandates a handful of states with high case rates are reporting a higher rate of newly vaccinated. But for now. It's not enough to slow a dangerous and deadly rise a threat looming larger every day. A a lot of folks have been talking about these breakthrough infections which are rare but happen. What we know well last year. The cdc stopped tracking breakthrough infections unless they resulted in hospitalization. Which is rare but nbc. News is heard back from twenty seven states so far. And we've tallied sixty six thousand breakthrough cases. That's just a small fraction of the vaccinated. Lester right miguel. Thank you president biden weighing in today about vaccine misinformation on platforms like facebook saying they're killing people and provoking strong denial from facebook. Gabe gutierrez has more on the information. Disconnect in tipton county tennessee just north of memphis vaccine skepticism runs deep dish lack of research. It's it was too fast to get it out there. About twenty five percent of people in this county are fully vaccinated. Meanwhile the state of tennessee has seen a three hundred ten percent jump in new cova cases over the last two weeks here earned around the country. The rise is fueled by people choosing not to get vaccinated. You just don't trust. Donald trump told me. Take that thing. I wouldn't take most of the states with the lowest vaccination rates are in the south unfortunately in our part of the country. We've not had as good a success with getting vaccinated as we'd like to. According to the census bureau the top reasons people were hesitant concerned about side effects. They don't trust the government or they want to wait and see if it's safe the. Us surgeon general. Who lost ten family members. Dacoven is now issuing his first health advisory not on drugs or smoking but vaccine misinformation. The voices of doctors nurses scientists in public health. Experts are too often being drowned out all sirens of misinformation a recent study finds two-thirds of unvaccinated adults believe major myths about vaccine such as they cause infertility or change your dna simply not true less drastic. The head of the cdc about this. We have seen a lot of false information out there. How harmful hasn't been to your efforts. Certainly it has an how to we know that that misinformation actually spreads more readily than the information that we're trying to get out there from conservative news outlets if the vaccine is so great. Wouldn't it sell itself. There'd be no reason to force people to take it but people are being forced to take it to social media. What's your methods the platforms like facebook. The people.

know that they spent in New York on solar factor panel factories that will goes belly up like cylinder or six hundred microchip companies and ninety million on six hundred million their ninety million on light pole they were all the ways than their demand give me more money I'm like what and then if he came to help the your day your charge what does that mean in the broader sense you have two competing visions for this country all of it is on the line and a hundred and eighty one days and it's either going to be on foreign policy appeasement and you know massive amounts of money to people that chant death to America but on the economic front capitalism will be destroyed this this is now the mainstream of this radical new democratic Socialist Party Biden buys in all of it and I'm laying out what that will mean for this country you know right now I would tell people you can't fix New York at this point it is if you if you don't want to pay all of this money for this colossal screw up my my advice is if you can move and if that meant that people already doing it I believe in the states but anyway we lay it out live free or die America in the world on the brink that is not hyperbole it is how I feel and I want to lay out the definitive case anyway we put it up on Hannity dot com commemorative box set first addition guaranteed bound set for mom and you get a beautiful gift card and you can even get it on Sunday if you didn't think of you right that's what I was gonna say you can print it out at home you don't have to go anywhere you can follow all your social distancing rules and regulations and still be able to give your mom something really nice I am still finishing it because I am trying to keep it is up to date as possible and I'm adding more and more and more pages and I like you're over three hundred pages now over three hundred our faces yeah I know and well let's see I've there's a lot to get is to importance on and you can't really you know that somebody did a good job well you've been one of the few people that I've actually had a glimpse at it so anyway I hope they'll think about for mom for Sunday and tell your lover and Tellem tell your moms I love them I'm I'm watching now this this battle among and this is the divide among states here because a lot of states he wants to open and they are in the process of this whole covert nineteen what we learned we learned that the worst states that what New York was the worst they should have been the most prepared they were the least prepared they got the most help and now they're demanding the most post code nineteen right not that we're finished with it but monies to pay for all of their their reckless spending unfunded pensions are their debt their deficits etcetera they're gonna want the taxpayers to bail them out now if you look at red states Tennessee Kentucky Alabama Florida North Carolina South Carolina you know Arizona Texas Oklahoma they all balance their budgets they all balance their budgets and they fund their pensions and their own tax anywhere near states like California New York Illinois and New Jersey tax and it raises the question well what do you do with all of this money well again they spend hundreds and hundreds of millions of dollars on idiotic green deal madness so it's sort of like you know like California okay they want to give what is that the US seventy five million dollars to illegal immigrants in checks the cost of illegal immigration for the state of California hundreds and hundreds of millions of dollars sanctuary state sanctuary cities thirteen and a half percent state income tax that's all likely to even go higher at this point now we're trying to have a discussion what state did the best what can we learn that would be Florida what did Florida do Florida targeted specifically the elderly population at those most vulnerable those with underlying health issues those with pre existing conditions of some kind or another and and those with compromised immune systems they went in there and they went in hard they went in hard to protect when I show these graphs on TV it is a dramatic difference from New York and New Jersey and Connecticut and Michigan and Illinois dramatic differences although to the credit to Gavin Newsom you're pretty good job I don't agree with everything he did but he did a better job he did a better job of protecting a state now what do they do down in Florida at they they didn't get these draconian measures in place I mean in Michigan the numbers are atrocious and that's in spite of this this idiot governor there Wimmer okay why are you banning jet skis if somebody's on a jet ski by themselves I would say that's probably pretty safe or motor boats okay maybe you're there with a spouse or girlfriend maybe have a mask on on top of it you know these you know you just shut down everything people have got to make a living they want to get out they want to get back to work you know we can't even camp at a campground every retailers closing their plants are lawyers they usually have big offices they go when they put the mask on well if the guys stocking the shelves at every grocery store in New York are there every week and they're not getting sick we can learn from that experience as well because that means it's working or the truckers that are out there they're still in contact with a lot of people you wear your mask you do your social distancing thing it's only going to be temporary but we've learned from these other play protect those that are most vulnerable now that responsibility will lie on all of us to the extent that you might have contact with people that are older you've got to consider them even over yourself because if you're young and healthy no underlying conditions your immune system strong the odds are with you you're going to be fine not in every case most cases that's what we learned here so you got to learn and apply the things that worked and then look at the things that didn't work and when you do that I mean why would you say you can't cut your lawn how stupid is that and that's why everybody's getting angrier and angrier as we go now I cannot believe that you know over there and M. as the NZ there right there have people saying these freedom obsessed Americans blind to threats like corona virus nobody's blind to the threat of coronavirus we all understand the dangers here the American people of the sat back they watch they made their own conclusions they're using their their own level of you know what is for them individual league poor individuals an acceptable level of risk and most people feel walking on a beach socially distant is not that big a risk and does it work down in Florida again I feel so sorry for this poor woman down in Dallas a salon owner and she was hauled into court she opened up her business the judge in this case demanding that she owes a lectin officials an apology for disrespecting Y. and flagrantly ignoring the politicians listen to this judge decided cannot function where one's own beliefs if a concept of liberty permits you to flaunt your disdain for the rulings of duly elected officials you owe an apology to be elected officials whom.
