"For the categories. It seems like there were like three or four names. Are they like. Is it like the olympics where you get a gold silver and bronze or does all jointly win. I yes he just. They just have winners. They don't have gold-silver-bronze say Kind of like yeah. You just want to win. Yeah yeah say mine was redoubt i because it means a b. Say i call a win right. Yes that and honestly i. We've discussed awards on his pokemon before we all know that. Neither of us the fans and the I entered this. Because if you redesign asked me and i really didn't expect to win And i have to say it's nice to win. It's nice to ignore snap. It was very unexpected. It was nice. And i did actually zoom in to the virtual conference so i got to do an acceptance speech which i really didn't have prepared say it was very short and didn't think my wife and she's still. She's still frowning at me. What did you think me. Some people had like massive speeches prepared. They can't expect it to win. They'd written minute long. Speech mine lasted ten seconds exactly late in the evening for your alert at night. It wasn't too bad because they started at four o'clock eastern nine pm uk. But it wasn't a saturday night. Say we did go out on saturday in the day to the champion pub which is featured in big london. Dreams maestro remez. I've just launched and That's where my characters have their first dance now. It used to be. I found out some new facts about it either. We just flew you in on those because it's really interesting. So the champion pub is east. It's in baseball to say it's not. It's not hill is the nearest cheap. So you're not going to woods way slim. The one of as water champion pub. Yeah do you remember what you've said with the set of really like that detail where the guys the guy stop spraying the ho- yes. Yes those champion. Well you know what we all done. Amazing so the champion pump. My lee characters. They live in white city. So this was the nearest gable gave all through from about the thirties or forties up until two thousand and four and was also a freddie. Mercury's legco right because he lived around the area when he was live and when queen were in the heyday and him and the band used to go to that all the time. And it's the he wrote. We all the champions in the champion and it's about them being breakfast with the champion remember. Seen a plant. One of those classes said that you know he lived there so yeah it is really close. I guess i didn't really consider that part but that's interesting. Yeah that's a fun little back but is in these puck bill too. I like it. It is really nice pop and so it was really nice to gay that and did a few videos and pictures outside with my book. So that was nice. We did that. Saturday came back at donald into conference at nine pm and mine was the third world so you know the the awards went on for two hours and i did. I was there for like over an hour of it. had gave away and making a petite and things like that and have a glass of glass of wine to taste my taste. My will but it was nice to win so Gay isn't this the one. The book is being published in brazil and in germany. Yes leisure did you let your publisher snow so they get add to the details. I didn't should i. I would okay i will. It still hasn't been launched in brazil actually go adopted when that's going to happen they. It's been on preorder in brazil for about six months and it was meant to be made and it was going to be doing. It was july into august. deny so. we'll you're seeing as i should never try to buy a car in brazil dire to but i know that my publisher was saying that they just they just having same semi. She's with david in brazil. And it's affecting every every paul of the staffing and excite on. I'm not pushing them. When it happens it happens. Hit hard it. My heart goes out to my heart. Goes out to everyone who is dealing with kovin and all the problems because It's surging again and the other thing is on the olympics asked. Oh going on. I think they might be just about finished by the time. This comes up well as we're recording. I'm really enjoying the olympics. I love the women's football. Unfortunately we got knocked out by australia so that was a tense moment. In our house my australian wife tried not to cackle and bloody sam curry. She's quantitative football. And but i've just been loving watching. All of it really is really nice. Be getting up quite early. I was up at seven. Am this morning towards the diving. And my boy. Jack lowell brought him. Lebron's tom daly. One go but him pretty well in the in the medal. Say it's just but it's just lovely to see the athletes though is I just watched the women's two hundred today and the woman. The american woman wholeness accommodating comparable. Named maybe gabby gabby thomas. She go bronze and she was saved. Thrilled i just love it. People work so hard for like twenty seconds of life. It is amazing to watch because like the dedication takes reach this level but i have is in australia. The on team that americans are gonna face now in the bronze. Yes yes suppose she. Obviously i'm going to be spoiling australia. United america in the bronze. And i'm hoping that Canada in well tonight. Canada and sweden. Dirty mind he wins. But i've got canadian. Relatives say but sweden canada. Or i know right. Yeah to the mice polite of the nation's sweet probably it because They've got the better outfit right. I don't have cable right now. And i have to like sign up for everything so i haven't been watching it as much because it's they've made it hard for people who've tried to cut the cord so of this lake and by the time i get up like eight when i checked the news. I find out all the happening anyway. It's like it's not fun to watch race knowing how it's gonna end yes. Yeah now it's been. I think the timings a worse be right. 'cause if i get up seven. Am that is like what is like mid-afternoon in japan. So then i can work the like you know you can watch a good sort of Five six seven hours of of competition. Which i was doing at weekends And then i. I tend to have my breakfast watching sports. So that's nice that's your. It's a bit different because they're recording it in and they're not playing it until the evening and then you just have to avoid every bit of news for like the nets really hard to do in today's world then of the i two. I'm going away on a on a weekend with some friends down to the south coast this weekend. So that'll be nice. Are i what you got comments. Comment monitor right. We got to i. We have a sophie. Lennox who commented on twitter. Sophie was responding to the translation episode and sophie suggested that maybe we should try. Google translate a quote from our new books in put that in dedications from a random country. And who knows what will come out. That can give fun game. I don't the had actually printed in the book monogamy.

"I'm a big olympics nerd so i'll watch anyway but i i do have to admit that it i. It loses a lot of its luster when they're no crowds there and people are more concerned about covert her being forced to drop out because of kovin. Some of the top athletes could participate so it it does take away a lot from it and i understand the game of lost billions of dollars this time around and Because of that. And you know. But but like i said i'll watch the olympics anyway. I've just. I've just kind of iquique about that. So rene a lot of Local athletes that we watched some. You know like gabby thomas. The harvard student who won bronze in the women's two hundred meters with great success also heartbreak for lyn boxer rashida ls in her opening round match both strong black female athletes which was clearly a theme of this olympics especially with simone biles. You know. I think. I watched the olympics and i enjoyed the but like joe not having crowds. There did make feel a little bit different. But book more than anything the takeaway from me is going to be simone biles saying no i need to take care of myself and i think it was a watershed moment for athletes but i think it was a watershed moment for a lot of us. You know we all have these moments when we need to take a step back. We don't have the flexibility to simone. Biles had but the idea that i need to take care of myself. I will do my job better if i can deal with this. I i think it's hugely important. I think i hope that what people remember. You know beyond the opening ceremonies or who got. What metal is what. Simone biles did and not a lot of criticism for doing it. I just think that was hate to say courageous but it was created. Because it's just something people don't generally do and to sit there and such a measured way talk about mental health especially as we've talked about mental health and how people have been impacting this last year. I was hugely important to me. That's what i'm going to remember. The twenty twenty twenty twenty one olympics were so joe in listening to rene there and thinking about conversations. We had this week earlier this week to about this. I guess i'm struck by. I wonder if cova created we are so much more trauma aware as a as a polity. It seems after this pandemic and i wonder if it created rene said she got criticized but just got a lot of support. Did it create space. That wouldn't have been there before. Yeah i mean she did get a lot of support. I believe i mean there were some criticism. Yes but You can't blame her for dropping out in possibly endangering herself you know gymnastics can be a dangerous sport and So you can't really blame her for choosing her mental health over her..

"A our book dot com as an e pub. And we're back the next thing. That's trending is as a floridian and you're like. Oh where's this going because usually we heard that like in the wake of metoo we're like men were like as the father of a daughter. I think i know how bad massage unique and be but this one is straight up as a floridian and it's a lot of people just like being like we hate rhonda santa's he's driving this state into the ground and in a way that is completely like you know. Obvious end intentional Because a lot of people are just like you know. We're looking at almost forty thousand cova deaths. I think in the state there and it's not getting any better Taylor swift is trending. Because i guess she's got a new album out or something called red and she uploaded some like puzzle thing to her account. Look i don't know anything about much about taylor swift. I just know that she got a new album out. Mercy's about avenue album out so there's that apparently there was some kind of vault that people were saying they accessed and yeah there's that way so it's it's like vaulted music or it's what's vault music. I don't know music from the vault. I guess she just said it was the i don't know it's her version. Taylor's version of red. Is that one of her old albums. Oh it's part of her like redo to like own re-recorded album see i just figured it out Got it so yeah she's got. She's got her own versions coming out. That's the one that has like the jillian hall song on it right. I think so. All that's like the one thing i know about taylor swift and there. It is boom. I exhausted all of my teeth. Swift energy And knowledge but yeah. The fans are happy. I'm very excited. So you know shot up to them and it sucks as she has to rerecord albums i know so i mean like i i know taylor swift exists but i know so little about her music. Yeah i mean. I know of the music you know when it's playing i'm like all i think that's taylor but other than that. I watched that documentary. I heard that was good right. Yeah thrown or call. Yeah it definitely is turned to me right. Right right i remember. You're saying you're like damn like you. Like i kind of feel bad for taylor. I feel bad for anyone who chooses to be a pop star. Yeah there's no one who has a great life through and through when you're mega popstar and when especially when you start young like that's a tough life. Yeah you to look everyone let your kids be children and then force them into superstardom once they're eighteen okay and then last thing that's trending. Us men's basketball because they barely did it. They made it into the gold medal game after a very very rocky start. They beat slovenia and it was a bit of a. Yeah it was. It was just a tense affair. But i think a lot of people now are feeling relieved if you saw that team and you're like how are yawn. Not like you got damian lillard and you got kevin durant what is going on. But they did their thing. You know luca danni which he had a triple double but it wasn't It wasn't enough to stop I guess the french national team so Yeah i mean. Last night. they be australia right. I was like watching it. Yeah they beat australia. So then that means is going to be france. Because luca couldn't do it against the so question. Is ben simmons on the australian team. I mean i know. He's australian so playing. I have no i- legit so no. I asked zach last night and he just looked at me like what so. I don't know oh no he. He decided against playing for the national team. Oh so naive in australia. Yeah interest. I think he's probably being like i got to work on like getting better basketball work on me. I gotta work on my basketball stuff. I think and it's kind of a testy affair. Bear last thing if you search ben. Simmons olympic says as ben cuts off communication the australian basketball team. They're called the australian boomers. The boomers show him what he's missing. Okay okay bloomberg man and yeah. So i mean we'll see we'll do you think like france Versus the us last time. Remember that vince carter dunked on that guy's a whole family so we'll see i don't know i i really i'll be real less. Yeah if the. Us doesn't win gold. How about this. But i probably won't know for about. I'm going to be real. I'm not going to know one thing i do. Wanna shout out is gabby thomas. who's an american sprinter. She says one bro bronze. But she's also a fucking like upstanding person She's like was finishing like a huge. I think like graduate degree. Master's degree about like healthcare disparities for black people. So she's like just she's doing the most on the track and in real life And it's kinda dope when you're like damn she graduated. Harvard and her other goal is to help fix racial disparities in the healthcare system. Making us look bad but anyway. That's what's trending a little bit of this a little bit of that thanks for hanging in Thanks for everybody listening. "She's just like in full. She just understands herself fully into being herself. I love people that are living there. Authentic life mike. She is living her on You mentioned that about how that that to me is the saddest part about this olympics. That used to be the one galvanizing bang right now. We're seeing the us women's national team they lose So they will not be able to compete for gold medal. And and you know because you know. Megan re piano dared to defy the critics and dared to speak out about social injustices and you know dared to bring the challenge and the pressure of it came along with that. There is a whole fact. People that are celebrating celebrating their own country loses. Its you know because they just want to be able to in it's just It's it's ridiculous. But i will say this because a lot of attention will be paid to the. Us women's national team. Losing my. i have to boss. Ladies my first lady as a group that would be the wnba ladies right are ladies and the us women's basketball team who have dominated for forty years. You know they don't get talked about because they just dominate. You know we love to talk about the man what's wrong with our never talk about how good the women are there. Just damn good and they just keep winning. So there's that. And i want to give a shout out to gabby thomas because you talked about compassion understanding and and i think what i love about this next generation of athletes is they are just turning this idea this narrative or trope about what is to be an athlete. They're turning it upside down. Ted and gabby. Thomas is one of those people. She just won the bronze-medal in the two hundred meters. She's an epidemiologist. Harvard is studying neurobiology. Because she wants to be able to help improve The healthcare system for black people address. Why mortality rates in black communities are higher than elsewhere. I just love that. She wants to do us all that brainpower for something good. So she represented her country and such an incredible way athletically. Nash is going to help. Change your country Through her work Through science so just chat to. Gabby you an absent bad new and And just super proud of our tracks ours. Yeah now we've they've been. This was hard. This possility This week was hard. 'cause they were a lot of women. Ivan still impressed and so crowd of nazi Man But just the women that i've seen come out and embrace the moment and be there for their teammates and each other and and own the moment for themselves. It's been beautiful. It's been beautiful to watch. So i've been loving of women shine been great. Shy lady shine Actually i'm not saying ladies anymore. I interviewed beijing..

"The podium entirely so i think what they're finding it it it's a much more competitive world and other countries are also doing well. There's been a great game chinese In the pool. Japanese great britain. So i think the day when the americans own the pretty much is over but they will still. I think probably topped the table there. But it's no longer given so we're a weekend and i wonder what is the scene either inside the arena or outside of it that you've witnessed this last week. That most sort of plays behind your eyelids when you close your eyes at night. Every game dug into the. There's an enormous. Buzz is enormous. Feeling you don't get that in the city here and you don't get it inside. I mean normally you go around the host city and there are banners and murals. And you know slogans you don't see that here The japanese people are not particularly in thrall about these games or at least not bringing two hundred plus countries with in the middle of a huge pandemic. so i think it's been downplayed and you see that inside the a to you walk in and you always have to make sure i better pay attention. Because i'm not going to hear any noise in this place. You know you really have to be up. I'm much more focused than i would normally be in any competitive moments that have taken your breath away. I think what was interesting is watching the us women rally around in the middle of this thing because one thing that i think people may have heard you only have four women on the chain. It used to be separate now. It's time to four. So when simone biles withdrew every woman had to go up in every event with one hand slip one fall and it might not won any medal at all so that was always really exciting. I think it made it. Because with simone they were probably gonna wind easily so i think that was the biggest suspenseful moments these games so far could hang in and they did so here in the states. Byles has received just a lot of widespread support from athletes fans. What about there. Have you been hearing about her decision from athletes there. And what's the reaction been like. I think there is great sympathy. Certainly a lot of the athletes. Now especially i think there is so much pressure especially with with you know. The athletes are all over social media. Everyone knows them. They can be very critical and social media. So i think there was a feeling that they applauding simone for admitting that it. That is not easy. I mean a lot of people think who would want her life you know. She is rich famous. And i think the level of expectations on her was just enormous. So i think there's a lot of empathy for her. We have a lot of new england. Athletes there I think we've all been watching and rooting for them. I know rashida. ls from lynn. The boxer had a disappointment this week. Have you been watching any of the local athletes and so far. It's been disappointing. A- games for them we had two fencers didn't do very well the rowers were shut out for the first time in history no. Us row is went metals. So pretty much. What we're looking for now is in track and field with gabby thomas. And the two hundred l. period. Aaron in the fifteen hundred there are possibilities. There was a surprising last irish ellis..

What are you going to take away from this well. I think it's funny. A lot of people are looking forward to paris Do at twenty four. I feel badly for the japanese organizers. this is not something that they had prepared for. We are trying to consider or at least get some joy out of these games because always that's what they're about and it's very hard when emperor opens the games in his reluctant to use the word celebrating which is part of what he's supposed to say these are really kinda downplayed games. I've never been one. That's been like that. So we're looking forward to ideally You know a different and better world in two thousand twenty four embarrassed first thing. You're going to do when you get out of your required fourteen day. Quarantine there I am going to have a glass of wine. I'm just looking forward to getting out into the city. "So today dave track and field is about to start. It is your time. What are some of the records that could possibly fall that you're monitoring and why would they be falling this year in particular. I think it's unlikely that they'll fall at the olympics because usually the olympics is more tactical. Like you care more about winning than running running a fast time But it does happen and this year this year. This past two years really have been sort of an epic time of record-breaking including some records that stood for a long time like the five thousand and ten thousand meters. Were both broken in twenty twenty and i think one thing that's on the mind of everyone who sort of involved in running geeky like i am is change in shoes so we going back to two thousand sixteen olympics in rio. I didn't know this at the time. But all three medalists in the men's marathon and the winner at least a winner of the women's marathon. Were all wearing these nike prototype. Shoes called vapor fly. That at the time were sort of disguised if you will so that people didn't know that they were something new But now basically everyone has to have them to the extent where some athletes who are endorsed by brands who have not made these certain special types of shoes have started letting their athletes wear shoes from other companies because the performance advantages security deal. This is that i need understand. So what are these shoes. How do they work. Because for so log. Dave we get all of this bs from shoe companies that it is. It's gonna be the shoes but in this case. It sounds like it's actually got to be the shoes so there are two main things. There's this foam on the bottom of the shoe that is made to act sort of like a spring. Like why you compress it when you step down and if it's stores energy really efficiently if it's both light on your foot and stores energy and can can return that energy or foot when you're coming off the ground in the spring like and these shoes also have carbon fiber plates in the soul that actually thought would also act like a spring but it turns out some of the physics. That's been done on that shows. That's not the case. And that they are some of how their work is. Maybe a little mysterious but some of it is that they they kind of add stiffening to your foot so maybe you know things like your big toe which used to push off won't won't bend is much and waste energy while doing that because it'll be held a stiffer position. Some of it's a little mysterious. But certainly there's this energy return of the foam and these carbon fiber plates. That are that are in shoes. That basically you now have to wear If you want to be competitive and so all the shoe companies have been developing them but now now moving on to the next level where in tokyo. It's not just road racing shoes but we're seeing them for track spikes and that's kind of the new the new thing. That's still a little mysterious. But that i think is causing some of the times that we're saying. Wow so basically what you're telling me. Is that if. I want to have finally challenged ryan lorenzen. Yes i gotta go get a pair of shoes. Yes and now. Every company has had to keep up so all the company so so there's been a shuffling sometimes of athletes who have left certain companies if they don't provide those shoes or companies of the athletes wear shoes from from other companies. And you're sort of seeing things that are that for again people that really follow running raises your eyebrow like at the olympic trials. The us olympic trials recently You know in the fifteen hundred meters which is basically the mile. All three of the top finishers were new balance and wearing the same new balance shoes. And so you know who knows that could happen anyway. But i think everyone sort of curious about about the shoes now like one of the most impressive performances and running that i can ever think of was you sane. Bolt ran nineteen nine in the two hundred meters when he was seventeen years old to set the world junior record and that was shattered by aryan knighton at the us olympic trials. Who's seventeen years old. And i saw that. I'm like man. This is just outlandish. Like the these. I think are adding Performance benefit on par with like some of the major doping drugs essentially. So you kind of have to have them if you wanna compete now and i think it's going to be a real haves and have now there's a rule supposed to be a shoot technology is supposed to be barred if it's not reasonably available to all athletes in the competition and i think these are certainly when you're talking about global competition ar- violating that principle but it's being allowed but it sounds like the scientists point dave around. These shoes is indisputable. But what is clearly in dispute. And i know you're like you know our reader of track message boards and stuff is the integrity of these accomplishments. How do runners huddle like. How does you sane bolt feel about this how to other runners maybe more purists. How do they feel about the fact that this technology as you say is perhaps more effective than actual. Pd's yeah i mean the the real running geeks are probably tired of hearing about it at this point. Because what can you do. And i don't wanna be about it. There's always been technological advances at the same time to me. This one feels a little different in the sense that you know again in two thousand sixteen when they choose her making impact they were sort of disguised. And you didn't really you didn't really know And so i think it's an and i don't think it's true that there are reasonably available to to all athletes and again not to be anti technology whatsoever but i think one cool thing about track and field is that it is one of the very small number of sports that isn't so equipment intensive that most of the world has no opportunity to even participate at all and so. I think it's a bit of a bummer. When that happens and also asked by you say bold. I mean i think he rightly has said. You can't really compare my records or even though he still has the world records one hundred two hundred two people who are now wearing these shoes with like spring like foam and carbon plates because they obviously make a big difference. So it's kind of a bummer. That it it. It makes it hard to compare to to him. So when we're watching these races dave and we're trying to figure out which records might fall. How commonplace are these shoes going to be. They're going to be essentially ubiquitous for the people who are in contention to win. Because i think they won't be in contention to win without them. And who are the runners that we may see on the metal stan. Who if you pan down just a little bit. You'll see this technology trayvon. Brunell one hundred meters noah lyles and the two hundred meter so these are american favorites. One hundred and two hundred Gabby thomas who made a big splash. at the olympic trustees so. She's the harvard grad who made a big splash. The us olympic trials think she runs for new balance. But you know this these kinds of shoes area night in the seventeen year old. Who broke you. Sane bolts world junior two hundred meter record so You'll you'll see them. You'll see them everywhere. we'll all of. This is new day of the controversy technologically that we had with those swimsuits right. That's we're wearing in beijing right in in a way it's totally it's track and field's laser suit moment no question about it. Meets the new space suits from speedo.

"She was a receiving that was unsuccessful. And in the wake of all these things many people online on especially black people were saying all right. I'm out. I'm not watching. The olympic games a one athlete. Who ran to twitter to say. Wait no still watch we need. Your support is gabby thomas. And i think gabby thomas might be one of my favorite people to keep an eye on. She's a western mass athlete. Harvard grad. She's now doing her masters in public health at the university of texas. So we basically have the same geographies and she studied neurobiology in global health. And she really wants to be a epidemiologist. She looks at racial disparities in health and for her she was like. Oh running's just my side thing. While her side thing saw her post. You know the second fastest time like that. We've seen in history in the two hundred and she is looking well poised to threaten that record and that really might be on the women's side at least The story of the sprinting events. Which is we might see. Many records be threatened So of course if we're talking about records falling. Keep your eye on is shelley and frazier price from jamaica. She has run the fastest time ever besides from flow in the one hundred meters she ran a ten point six three recently Which is wild. She's probably the best chance for that record to fall She's also a mother now and is vying for that ray. Her third gold medal in these events on the women's side she didn't compete in twenty sixteen of course to have her baby but she won the medal in two thousand eight and two thousand twelve. I'm in as much as jamaica has had success. In track and field she was actually the first jamaican woman to win gold in the hundred meters so she is definitely one to watch their so along those lines of records to watch. I wanna briefly. Take you over to a longer distance. I'm talking about the ten thousand meter. But the ten k is super popular and here we have already seen in the lead up to this event The world record fall not once but twice in the same week And so we had ethiopia's lesson bit Giddy taking the world record down to a twenty nine a one point zero three which works out to be about four forty one as a mile split just two days earlier. Dutch runner who's also ethiopian-born fan. Hassan had gotten that down to twenty nine zero six eight two so we are now in the low twenty nine in ten k And that is something to keep your eye on as we go into the olympics. The other thing to know about track is actually have this really interesting. Mix of people who are fresh out of college were young phenom and returners so as a team. We're sending thirteen returning medalists from the twenty sixteen games but we're also seeing up and comer folks who are like a thing you in the eight.

"You know another thing we got this week. Is this viral message to lay down. So i'm feeling i'm feeling a message of that song so much. Just listening to you recount the weeks that were exactly exactly and that message. Also don't necessary. And i think once you lay down in protecting piece the next step for me is processing And i can think of no better person to do that within you so i guess we'll start with just a asked how how you're doing. It's been exhausting. Absolutely i think that part of my process. I feel like i've had to hold a lot of space for both celebrating. A moment of you know even just momentary triumph victory with nicole hannah jones this week while also holding space for not only retailer also kayla johnson who i think is also part of the story of how black women are treated within these institutions that we both have to mold ourselves into everyday in different ways that were never designed for us as well as we face the brunt of punishment we talk about that comparison of how we are constantly Over punished constantly bearing the weight of others decisions of others mistakes and so for me. I'm sitting in holding a lot of space for all the feelings. I could have of both victories. These small or big victories when we see black women nonbinary athletes crushing it or we see those entering into journalism or academia finding winds while also saying that because these places were never built as they are always. We're always read in opposition to them and so once we're reading opposition then we have to then operate from that space and so some of i don't think we even realize when we're doing it because we always have to be on guard and that's part of the exhaustion is even when you are at your best crushing it twice as good whatever metaphor you want to bring into it. We are always at risk And so there's a way that i've been sitting with this idea of rest and recovery. Would it feels like we can't even catch our breath. There's like whiplash these past couple of weeks especially with the olympics and then for me. I think it's hit especially hard. Because i'm looking at nicole. Hannah jones her tenure case as i'm going back to my brain for when i used to work at espn so they academia espn. I think i tweeted that. Espn prepared for the disrespected academia as a black woman and so i'm having this moment where i'm constantly either going back to moments i've experienced me academy or moments i personally experienced. Espn that were constantly telling me that. I wasn't supposed to be there. Holding space for all of these layered in multiple motions for me is like almost the story of especially what we've seen black women in sports in the in the olympics. Like you celebrate the wins. I'm thrilled for for raven for gabby thomas. I'm thrilled for folks. And then at the same time you hold these other moments in your leg. I don't even know what to do with this. This is so frustratingly. The thing about the nicole hannah jones situation for those who are unfamiliar nicole. Hannah jones award winning winning journalist. was offered a the knight chair in journalism at unc chapel hill..

"Missing the cell. There are a lot of feelings going around and we have to make sure that for the sake of you the viewer. We separate the feelings from the facts. Sha carry missing the olympics. She had to because once. Her performance was invalidated due to the failed drug tests. Then the united states track and field committee had one option. Remove somebody else who placed fourth to sixth to put sha richardson on the relay. But i'm gonna ask you. Who would you remove because the fourth place finisher was. Gabby thomas. the fastest woman alive over two hundred meters. Who just happens to be black woman. The fifth place finisher was english gardener. Who has the eighth fastest time ever through. One hundred meters and also has an olympic gold medal in two thousand sixteen arguably the most decorated short sprinter currently running these short sprints who also happens to be a black woman or the six place. Finisher elliott. hobbs. Who graduated or at least attended. The you like sha carey attended. Lsu and has the third-fastest time in america through one hundred meters this year. She also happens to be a black woman so we can't jump to make about race because in order to put chia carry on the relay team you would have to remove chicanery. You'd have to remove somebody else from the relay team. And i don't know who else you would remove the result the usa track and field committee. Did what they had to do. And try to maintain fairness at least for the other athletes involved. Yeah totally correct. There who feel this is a mixed emotional bag for me. Because i feel for her because it just was happened. Not just in the last couple of weeks for the olympic trials but the highs and lows when you talk about that disparity that's when you really have issue in life is what they say is better not to have to have lost. She had it and she lost it now. she didn't really lose it. She kind of took it from herself. Which is a little different is the ones stealing it from you. This look at this. I feel for her. And i don't feel for her. Yeah said why. Should i care more than you care if you don't care about the rules enough to abide by or to change them. And why should i give a damn so. I'm just going to keep it like this. She lost in two lanes to me laying one punishment one month off now that excludes her from one hundred but still keeps earn a four by one hundred you lost and lane to as well policy procedural. This is what happened. Once they knew the chur contest was invalidated like you said they had to make moves to get the alternates in place invalidate in the one hundred invalidating the four one hundred because we already called the alternates to tell them that. They're on so now once we call him to tell him all. You want us to steal from them so that you stole from your cell. Oh true true. This i cannot hate autism through from telling me right now wrong number. You gotta call yourself. This'll be a one on one call instead of you reach it out now. I'm not blaming. Should carry as much as those who are emotionally charged. Because they'll following should carry and her efforts but i do hear people talking about boycott boycott. What boycotting jet boycott what. What because she couldn't follow the rules. I'm not boycotting jet who raised to up. We got a boycott. This and i don't care if she's black she's orange. I'll care if she's like. I don't care for alternates or white to blame. The point is what's fair was fair and what's right is right. Should carry one out there and want to race but she won a race. An imbalance way is just as simple. Move all twenty twenty four via before you bleed so let this go. And let's move forward. Oh yoga gonna learn to love track. If y'all do not already why this photo. I'm gonna be real what y'all let me here. It'll be real with withdrawal from the stance of publicity from the stance of fame from the stance of platform. This has been the best thing to happen. Should carry here you. We've vetted this yesterday about other sports. i don't think this is track and field exclusive. Sometimes folklore is greater than reality marcel. Now we're always saying we always imagine if barry sanders would've been behind the cowboys offensive. Line that emmett smith was behind he might have rushed for twenty thousand yards or you might not maybe he would have had to hit the holes too fast. Wouldn't have been able to dance with and maybe when it happens. Accessible career debbie. We don't know man. If you care to go to the olympics she was going to bring back the gold. Or maybe not. Because there was a woman elaine thompson who just ran in jamaica. Who ran a ten seventy one just yesterday. Faster than anything should carries ever run. And elaine thompson is not the best jamaican. Because there's a woman in jamaica kellyanne frazier. Pricey ran ten sixty three just two weeks ago. Better than carries ever right. There's a none that i've done several people who could have actually inhibited to carry from the growth. That she's had right now. Now it's been a convoluted because it's like man. You weren't able to go out there and compete at the highest level but from a stance and fame standpoint and america remember. You can earn a lot of dollars. Just having a huge just by having huge platform logan paul etc should carry out three hundred thousand followers two weeks ago before olympic trials. How do i know. Because i was at olympic trials. How do i know. Because i keep track and field as much if not more than anybody on tv. Carry us two million right now to with people like michelle obama gabrielle union. Nellie tweeting about her. She can't we had seventy thousand twitter followers just two weeks ago. She has over four hundred seventy thousand now. She passed because yes being real. She hasn't yet accomplished anything she hasn't won. Usa is because her performances are invalid. So what does she accomplish. He has the khalidi record. Catch record at ten seventy five but from a pro level. She hasn't accomplished anything. Has all eyes on her. So if i'm actually being real looking at her as her agent looking at her is nike her endorser huge you just. You were the most notable person in track and field more notable than allyson felix. Who is the most decorated track athlete of all time. You're the most notable person in track and.

"With natural hair. Black natural hair being ruled out. This is a combination of events that feel to me personally as a black woman as an attack on our women womanhood now greenwich chakari broke osha. Kerry excuse me broke the rule that does not change but when it comes to as you say going to bad or fighting an abundance of grace that is not given the situation and that just makes me a little bit. Gabby thomas has terrific. Sprinter pointed out on twitter last night that she's you know it bothers her to see this idea particularly on twitter. That black folks nago support the olympics. I had some friends joking. Oh what country am. I gonna root for because i'm not one for the us because you carry won't be there gabby thomas and the rest of the runners and athletes. That are going to be competing have worked very hard to get to this moment. I'm going to tune in. But when i reflect on the things leading up to tokyo this unfortunately will be part of the narrative and to me some of the decisions and the rules. It has to do with what is unknown because they're getting educated. Let me ask you this monica. Then what would you. What would you have done if you were in charge. How would you have handled this. What would you have liked to have seen. When let's say you were in charge of the team correct and it came onto your desk. She tested positive for what is in the ioc now. This is the olympics is international. Yep this is a banned substance. This is not a us decision. This is an international you. Are you agree to play by the rules of the international olympic committee. And this is the rule. This should not be in your system. It's in her system. How would you handle it. Where else can i get her in. Because she represents right. Well that's part this suspension would have been. He would have been able to to to raise in the four by would you so you would. You would have on you. Tell the rest of team we side with her. We trust her. I would put. I put it on my four by team. And i would live with the consequences. I do not buy that. She's going to have this issue again. Personally i just don't see it. I would put her on the four by team and the answer to me would be look at these times. Look at these scores. We want to put ourselves in the best position to win now if she has a history of fumbling handoffs or something. I don't know that assuming that she is capable to run the four by and his wealth skilled in this event as well. I'm putting her on my team on. I'm sorry this should be in. The acre. shouldn't the fastest anchors sports times. Sports can't debate that. Like i'm putting on my four by team. That's why i am. And i get it. Then the question becomes. Are you going to make exceptions consistently down the road. I know that would not be. But in this particular case and i don't know how often this comes up when we get ready to prepare for the olympics and this particular case i would have put it on my floor by team and i'm not apologizing. Just explain to everybody to. Because i know there has been especially in a lot of states in this country a lot more leniency when it comes to marijuana much different different feel about it. This is one thing that that the anti the us anti doping agency believes. That's there are some drugs though. They might not be performance enhancers but they can pose health risks or violate what they call quote the spirit of the sport and so that's why still remains an issue but just quickly sakari did say remember in her interview with the today show that she said that this is just one games. I'm twenty one very young. Plenty of games left in me to compete in and plenty of talent that backs me up because everything i do comes from me naturally. No steroid no anything. This incident was about marijuana. So after my sanctions up i'll be back be able to compete and every single time i step on the check. I'll be ready for whatever anti doping agency to come and what and get what it is. They need meaning that she knows. Now she's going to be somebody that they keep an eye on and they're gonna wanna test. I am one presently who has learned the most from my biggest fumbles blunders in life and so this is that for her then she still has a very bright future ahead of her in the sport. John jay we'll zoom and brought to you by goodyear. Goodyear knows from here on out. Every game is a chance to create momentum to make the right pass right moved. Hit the perfect shot. It takes momentum to get through. The playoffs takes everything to capture title goodyear more driven so we have also international competition. All right now on. Espn euro cup football on china. I was trying to go the goal. Here let's let roland handle this kind of thing because this is expertise joins us right now. The good your hotline. Espn soccer analysts. Morning taylor how are you good morning. Ah one is debatable. Whether or not. This is my expertise in monica too early for goal by the way. I'm so disappointed. Everything i know about. You have watched you have in common. You bring the energy too early for now. No it's never too early. I just feel like those that you know. Six forty five in the morning on the east coast. Maybe like yo. Monica noted the point of a morning so waking actually monica and tone it down generally at a twelve and the dial only supposedly. Why monica. And i get along good so before we get into what we're seeing right now and penalty kicks in italy moving on and of course today's match just your thoughts because again international play no matter what the sport There aren't there are tests. There are rules and there are things that happen where players not available and the sha carry a richardson situation is one that does resonate not just in track. But i think in all sports. Do you have any any thoughts on that in her that she was left off the olympic team allen. I just a in monaco as well. I feel like all of us are in that same. I think group of people where you sit there and you feel for sure kerry. She's trained her absolute but off to get to this point She's worked her butt off. She's literally you know the top three contenders Coming into the olympics to win the when the gold and you sit there and say oh your heart goes out to her and understanding that painkilling medicine and and even in my dad and i'm not old painkillers. Were given out freely in the locker rooms and now that we have seen science evolve in see that there are other avenues. You understand and and you. You know empathize with sha carry understanding why. She's taking her paint away what she wants to do and do it in a natural way in saying that all of us that have competed at the highest level. Rules are rules as ludicrous as this rule may be. It's still rule. And so. That's where i'm just really torn. I feel awful for. I feel awful for all of us on the outside that don't get to see a race in compete at the highest level but unfortunately allen a rules rule and until the rule changes. You can't be the one to enforce a different one. And i think that's the most difficult part to all of this for me. I found it very interesting too that they acknowledged like. Hey this is something. We probably need to look into may need to discuss going forward. But as you mentioned tillery rules rule and get your experience playing for the us national team player in the world cup Which is why we go there first but when we talk about rules i gotta ask you now..

"Night off before the olympic committee barbican they said in this would clear up everything with this whole situation with this young lady. They said it's not fair to the other athletes. It's not fair to the of athletes who prepare and don't smoke the to reinstate her back into these games it's not fair for the others who follow the rule. And that's what this is all about. It's not about her. It's about the others who who who understand the consequences of their actions. I'm not saying none of us. Perfect and i'm not being judgy. Hey it's all about the other athletes who didn't smoke the we because there's this big campaign now online to reinstate her but what about the other athletes that data that followed the guidelines in the policies of trying to make the team You'd be back next year for the world championships. You won't miss the olympics. And i'm for sure your learned from this but i have to go with the olympic. This board the feno all these olympic folks. Us olympic committee. I have to go with them. They are absolutely right. It is not fair to the other athletes who follow the rules. That's it to protest the olympics. One person no which i think is fair because you know how many other african american athletes will be there who need our support as well. She chose to do the marijuana she. She said it she knew what she was doing. She knew what was wrong and she frankly did not care so she after rules. Well no don't penalize all the fbi work they ass off. The she knows what she did was wrong. Okay chow use your mom. Asking excuse was smoking weed before she passed. And so that's why the and not only that like even if your mother was a we'd advocate or not. I'm for sure your mother wouldn't want you may rest in peace for sure. Your mother wants you to jeopardize his. That's exactly and if you're new rules to and we say that respectively. I don't think that would want wants you to smoke. We upon her death to disqualify you for going to the olympics. I'm just. I'm not in my life on it but i'm for sure your mother wouldn't cosign. How close how my wife. Because from what i read. She was raised by her grandmother. So i wanted to. How close because she said. I found that my biological mother died. She didn't even make. It seem like he was close on when she was talking about the old as so now so now. The comment is from from the management on that. We ain't got nothing to say of course stop talking because you making yourself look crazy right now. Okay stop it you disqualify yourself because you smoke marijuana which is a drug as far as this committee sees fit. And that's it onus responsibility and move on with your life. Nobody's judging anyone. Lord knows you know. I know position a job. But i'm just saying you know the rules. And it's not fair to the other athletes and to go out there to tokyo and protests that she's not on. This is so disrespectful to the other athletes and barbara just said the even the african american athletes. It is so disrespectful to them. That put the hardworking without smoking. The weed yeah okay just to piggyback on. That might be in. A runner named gaffe. Gabby thomas all. She just tweeted. She said it really hurts to see so many black people choosing not to watch the olympics this year. I'm there are so many black in finnish so many black athletes That put years of hardworking. For this moment myself included. We want you to support. That was one of the athletes who's gonna be at the olympics So many black was they was going to boycott the olympics because chakari social cari then responds and she pretty much her narcissist say she say a lot of people of these athletes got so much to say. But you can't beat me in a race like girls sit back. I was ready. I was ready to get out of here. And i'm still getting out of here. Black people my brown people. I plead to you too. I seriously plead for you. Not to dumbness down. You are smarter than this black folks and brown folks. You have to be if you gonna sit there and protest the olympics because a runner. That's african american violated the terms and conditions of running. There is something deeply sad about this do we do. We have any responsibility or accountability for any of our actions in the world that we live in today that this other athlete. Is i really. Well we can. You're gonna protest this because this woman has smoked weed and she has the nerve enough to respond back in on literally on a third grade level. Saying that no one could beat her in running the girls. She never even mentioned sakaris names. She never even acknowledged the situation saying that. You know we watch our support. Is hundreds of us support. So why would you bend over one person who made the decision herself to smoke we. We didn't do what she herself. Net situation so why not banning it watch this this social this and i keep saying thirty percent of this is not even real people. Think about this black people. Think about this brown people think about this don't discard. The athletes played by the rules. These world class athletes that sacrifice everything in their lives in their parents and grandparents and and institutions in sponsorship for these runners. And you just to throw all that away because one athlete wanted to smoke weed. it's terrible. it's disrespectful black. People brown people come on. Follow your boy harvey. I'm watching the olympics. I'm watching these beautiful black women and black men and african american all colors perform not gonna watch the olympics because one of the runners decided to smoke weed and get disqualified. I'm trying to you. I was trying to go there and try to go goal here. Yeah, it looks like Taylor Twellman handle this kind of thing. Because this is expertise. He joins us right now. The Goodyear hotline on ESPN soccer analyst. Good Morning, Taylor. How are you? Good morning, Alan. One is debatable. Whether or not this is my expertise in Monica. It's too early for gold, by the last way to 12 and I'm so disappointed everything I know about. You have watched you all of our colleagues we have in common. You bring the energy too early for gold. Come on. Now. You know it's never too early. I just feel like those that you know 6 45 in the morning on the East Coast, maybe, like yo, Monica. Tone it down to the point of a morning show Got wake up, actually. Yeah. Monica and tone it down. Well, he's generally at a 12 and the dial only supposed, which is why Monica and I get along. Al. It is it is good. So before we get into what we're seeing right now, and penalty kicks in Italy moving on. And of course, today's match just your thoughts because again an international play no matter what the sport there aren't There are tests. There are rules. There are things that happen where players not available. And the Shakeri Richardson situation is one that does resonate not just in track, but I think in all sports do you have any any thoughts on that and her that she was left off the Olympic team? Alan. I just in Monica as well. I feel like all of us are in that same I think group of people where you sit there and you feel for Shakeri. She's trained her absolute butt off to get to this point. She's worked her butt off. She's literally you know the top three contenders coming into the Olympics to win the when the gold And you sit there and say your heart goes out to her and understanding that pain, killing medicine and even in my dad and I'm not that old. Painkillers were given out freely in the locker rooms, and now that we Have seen science evolve and see that there are other avenues you understand? And you You know, empathize with Shakeri understanding why she's taking her pain away and what she wants to do and do it in a natural way in saying that All of us that have competed at the highest level rules are rules as ludicrous as this rule. Maybe it's still rule. And so that's where I'm just really torn. I feel awful for I feel awful for all of us on the outside that don't get to see her race. And compete at the highest level. But unfortunately, Allen a rule's a rule and until the rule changes, you can't be the one to enforce a different one. And I think that's the most difficult part to all of this for me. I found it very interesting, too, that they acknowledge like, hey, this is something we probably need to look into and may need to discuss going forward. But as you mentioned salary, rule's a rule and get your experience playing for the U. S national team playing the World Cup Which is why we go there first..

Richardson is accepted the one month suspension after she tested positive for marijuana. Richardson cannot compete in the one hundred meters in the tokyo olympics but might still be able to run in the relay later. The tests came out at the olympic trials. Last month and richardson said at the time she found out about her. Mom passing away and was triggered by the news Richardson apologized for her actions and added quote. We all have our different struggles. We all have our different things we deal with but to put on a face and have to go out in front of the world and put on a face and hide my pain. Who are you. Who am i to tell you how to cope. When you're dealing with the pain or you're dealing with the struggle that you never experienced before or that you never thought you would have to deal with so Marcellus wiley know. We talk track more than any other show. What is your reaction to carry. Richardson potentially missing. The olympics over failed drug tests. Yeah my first reaction is. I'm actually relieved because of the circumstances. I'm going to be real about this over apology that mentally. I was having a conversation thinking when the news broke that it was performance enhancing steroids etc. And then it came out to be wheat and then i realize okay. I know what's going on right here. Because i've been through this situation before i did lose my mother while we're still inactive inactive player in the nfl and you know what it didn't give me a licensed to ill. It did not give me a license to break rules and restrictions. The thing about this one is so many players that used to smoke weed and play by teammates as well. There's a percy harbin quote out there that said it wasn't a game he played in nine years that he wasn't hard person harvard. So i know that this has always been around the culture. Let's talk about the circumstances because the guys who used to play and used to get high used to always say don't pay too stupid tax. And what does the super tax that means you know when they're going to test and you also know the amount they're going to test for. Don't get caught so in this situation. I'm looking at security and i'm saying simply you got two choices not three. You thought you had a third. don't smoke weed. Whatever the marijuana edibles whatever your or smoke it and don't get caught but then in this world today there's a third option. I think that is being fillings driven. It's being driven by your own justifications of behavior and it's really reversing the equation of logic so people are going through their own circumstances. I went to my circumstance. Losing my mother and then because they're going through that circumstance they think that is now going to empower them to do what they wanna do. And that's not the world works. We talk about this situation right now. It's unfortunate it. Certainly is a trivial conversation about legalization of wheat. In america and in sports will get to that but the point is. I'm sorry you knew the rules. You broke him. You gotta deal with the consequence. Yeah there's so much to unpack here. I will start by saying this. You could submit that. Should carry support. Staff and society failed her. And not adequately providing kerr athletically legal ways to grieve and to cope with the loss of her. Mother's i'm sure she's still trying to do now with that. Being said there are stupid rules in sports. Okay but you still have to adhere to the stupid rules in sports regardless of how stupid they are before there was chicanery richardson. There was a man by the name of christian. Coleman want to know why we talking about christian coleman because he's suspended right now he's suspended because they stupid rule and track and field if you have a whereabouts failure three of them over twelve months you get suspended. Christian coleman had a whereabouts failure as olympic athlete or an aspiring olympic athlete. You have to update your location whenever and wherever you traveled to because of a drug test or comes to your home and you are not there. Strike one christian coleman reigning world champion and the hundred meters. He's not going to be at the olympics this year because of a stupid rule. Gabby thomas the fastest living woman to run the two hundred meters. She just ran the fastest time ever second to flow. She was provisionally suspended because she had a whereabouts failure three of them. If not by the grace of an uber receipts showing that. She was home when the drug test said she wasn't. We would not be seeing her. The fastest woman alive in over two hundred meters running at the olympics. They stupid rule but to got to adhere to stupid rules. We have seen greater athletes be punished for longer for something lesser because of stupid rules so the fact of the matter is regardless of how dumb the rule is you have to adhere to it now. It's a loss for a lot of people. probably the first the fans. Yeah sakiri nike games. Last for a lot of people but fell. Is i look at it. Let's please not make this ratio. Who did everybody trying to. It's not racial. It is not an american rule. The rule for her suspension is because of wada world. Anti doping agency world done. It is not about america and it is not about trying to hold someone down because of the color of their skin or because of their race. So many racial issues in society that we have to be very accurate when we tried to bring them up. And it is not an american restriction. It is a world restrictions. So that's the other thing on my first lap that i just needed to clarify. Yeah i'm glad that you talked about it in those terms. And you really put the boundaries out there and i want to expand on those boundaries. One missing your testing up to three times is not even a subaru in itself. Because the guys who are guilty are intentionally missing those tests could be. There's no no could be. Let me tell you that too. Oh she curie you lost your discipline and now you're going to be disciplined. I'm remind you of something you told me before. That is actually wanted a great while. The 'isms discipline is choosing what you want most over what you want now. Now what clouds. This one is if not her own doing. She's grieving a loss so in that grieving process. What are the consequences of your actions and would this situation shows that there could be grave consequences. Could the olympics only comes one every four years grave consequences by your choices. But it's still a stupid tasks that you gotta pay. And i want people to separate the emotional pool of her. Losing her mother from the reality of this is not still an opportunity for you to not abide by the rules. Let me tell you about these same rules from water from you. Sada god this is so easy. The drug is banned in competition periods. Okay so far. Most people like what does that mean is defined as beginning at eleven fifty nine at night on that day before a competition and ending at this conclusion. Come on now come may wait a minute. You just basically told me hours you gotta be under one hundred fifty nanograms per milliliter. Okay so now. We have a different conversation because what reality smoking. We whatever your marijuana level was. Was it right before the race was a part of your training cycle because marijuana stays in your system up to a month cocaine heroin two to five days so if you think about this situation and i know too much about this because i had too many smoking friends and teammates. They know how to psycho in a cycle out. And that's why they always say don't get caught or don't do it at all. That's the tough one about this. The emotional pool because of her loss. Let's stay with the emotional pool because we because of her grieving tremendous loss loss that some people have had to deal with in life. And if you have yet you will have to eventually but we all have to deal with tough things in life. So i'm not going to weigh one against another but because of her. I'm reminded of this. You don't make rules. Based upon exceptions you make rules based upon the nor yes. If you're driving to the hospital then you're with winter significant others say you're with your spouse with your girlfriend. Whatever the case may be and her water breaks gotta get to a hospital. I sat you run a red light. Well we can't now remove all red lights in the nation because the you're running of the red light was actually very justified. In the instance actually have to have a rule based upon a norm. Not an exception but also rules aren't necessarily in place just to protect you. Most rules are actually in place to protect other people. I really said this on twitter. But i'll say it on the show you can say is cool to legalize weed in competition while you run in a straight line but it's probably not great to legalize weeding competition. If you throwing javelin it's probably not great to legalize weed in competition. If you're using a pole to elevate over a poll eighteen feet high the poll. It's probably not great for safe to legalize weed in competition if you're going to discus spinning around and then heaving an object roughly one hundred eighty two two hundred fifty feet through the air with people referees and whatnot marking the distance is probably not a great idea. We have rules for the norm. Not rules for the exception so while this might be a a merit based exception it. You will yeah. You don't make rule based upon an exception no you don't and that's what's unfortunate about this situation that maybe in her emotional state that clouded her vision of seeing right from wrong and now she has to deal with the consequences. She made this bed tana lion and richardson benching has generated several opinions on washy gossip spended so acho shamir wannabe legal in sports. That's a tough question because it's illegal in some aspects of some states of society overall. I will say no marijuana should not be legal in competition. Remember what we were talking about people. In this specific instance you cannot smoke or edible or whatever the case may be from eleven fifty nine prior to competition into a competition is over. So it was. I look at it. Should marijuana be legal sports. No because do you want a pitcher doing a hundred mile. An hour fastball under the influence of anything to marijuana be legal in sports. No because again too i want someone throwing a spear which is what javelin is under the influence of anything now. The counter is well acho. Alcohol is legal. Yes but we're not having a debate about alcohol because nobody thinks it's a good idea to go out there. Drunk suss moot point but it shouldn't be legal yet to find ways to compass with whatever you're dealing with legally sell let me give you an example because again me and marcellus. We live track and field all day. I studied. I was actually at the olympic trials. I watch a run. I watched her run out here. And i watched a run prior in eugene years ago. Would that thinks that. Sell the fastest man in the world over two hundred meters. The fastest man in the world over two hundred meters right now in american man noah no allows him put up a tweet recently sale and he said someone asked me. How did winning the world championship. Prepare me for the. Us olympic trials. He's insurance it didn't help at all. Us olympic trials was a monster compared to world championships. No i was in the warm up area with the man. He was going through so much anxiety you could see. How did he cope headphones. How to be cope relaxation fastest woman in the world over two hundred meters. Gabby thomas. i know her well. She had to take off her watch sale when take off her apple. Watch 'cause she did not want to see the lack of her sleeping habits and how her body had been broken down. That was how she coped with it. So i don't think we should be legal in sports because while it might help an individual it could still put other individuals in harm's way and there are are other ways to cope with different issues. I would assume and if not we got to get better at finding other ways to go. Yeah exactly like that. Last point right there. I say yes and no. I really own offense. That means i'm not doing my job right now. So i'm gonna call it yelp. Yes and no. Let me tell you why. I say no because it can impair and they can enhance you now. A lot of people don't look at marijuana as a performance enhancing the odor. But let's talk about. According to my teammates. It helped with focus help. we're relaxation. Help calm calmness help with their anxiety and other things now we all kind of understand what it can do in terms of impairing your abilities compromise motor skills etc. You just in a different phase different hayes. Maybe but if you look at this situation for her secured you jumped the gun of this legalization conversation. You jumped the gun and track disqualified. You jump the gun of legalization disqualified as well. I hate to do it to you but you got to go. And it's a sad situation. Because i know you didn't mean to jump the gun but if you watch anyone in attract race to keep it in the sport a lot of them don't mean to jump the gun as well. Everyone always thinks that you fall star just because you're trying to cheat now sometimes you fall starting because you're sitting here full of that tension and anxiety. When are they going to let me go when they're gonna let me go. I'm ready and you just sit off the sensors or you could just move. You can just switch. You just can't get your body and mind into a call still space so it's not always would negative intention. I look at this situation. Sadly like as confucius say life is really simple but we insist. They'll make an complicated. We insist on making a complicated. There's so much room. For not only her defined other coping mechanisms that were legal but also other ways to not. Compromise was so important once in every four year opportunity. But we're here brosseau legalization. If i had to say it is going to be legalized in federal court. Soon clarence thomas wanted to most. If not the most conservative supreme court justice is already talking about the contradictions with this in terms of enforcement being forced on the state federal level. That's it it ain't here so is not here. Yes you carry. Let's let's go somewhere because we went all over the place with this conversation and every place we go. I love to arrive at talking about performance enhancing because so many people are talking about the aspect that we doesn't make you faster it doesn't make stronger. It doesn't make you quicker remember to enhance. Something is either to add a positive or to subtract a negative views. Attract the negative that enhances you if you add a positive that enhances your focused on the mind right now so. Let's always stay focused on the mind. Not just when it soups. What we're trying to talk about at the olympic trials. Everybody was anxious and everybody was nervous. So you want to know what would enhance performance the ability to subtract anxiety. You want to know what would enhance performance the ability to subtract stress so while smoking marijuana is not going to enhance your fast twitch muscles no go make you faster. It's not gonna make it quicker. It's not gonna make you stronger if it can subtract stress and subtract anxiety that does enhance performance remember. We're focused on the mind. American twenty twenty one and these stressors of the mind. We also need to understand that if we can actually enhance you by taking away. What is negative to you and that does enhance hands. Perform tremendous point tremendous point of how you get to the same place a different way. I love that. I wanna talk about the anxiety of track. 'cause it's not the same. In any other sport. i ran track high level. I played football level. Football didn't give me the same level of anxiety attracted football. Gave me a little more fear laced in terms of preparation and mental anxiety but it never reached a level of anxiety and track. You want to know why because one in football you got high no matter who you are. I don't care who you are even a quarterback in high quarterback get back there and throw interception and say you ran the wrong route in all. You have to do this and we say basketball player. Somebody misses shot. He could say oh man it was on you because this wasn't even play everywhere. Track is yoann and everybody looking at you and more importantly this is why there's so much anxiety because you are trying your hardest that entire time. Think about football gohar for three seconds. Take a break up. let's talk about it. How do i go do something else. Go back out koya hardest. Come back how did that go. You have these moments of interruption that allows you as a collective to kinda hide and kind of do it together mentality not in track brother it is you trying damn this and everybody knows you either one or you failed so i look at this situation simply that is unfortunate that she initially tried to rationalize. And that's look. She had a good reason. Obviously but it's still not enough to go to this place. Rationalizations can't justify you violate restrictions. And now she's going to have to deal with her brother. We all going to be at a loss but she's going to be the greatest loss because she got wait four more years to do this again coming up. The clipper right now. But what about next season We'll tell you he consider leaving l. a. Nope that's next. Don't speak for yourself. Litter had to sit out the conference finals with an injury and now his future in la is in question year right. Hawaii is expected there klein his player option. Which would allow him to become an unrestricted free agent for say the heat mavericks will make a quote heart. Push test free agency. Thousands considered a threat because of luca. Danni and cap flexibility. Consider leaving delivers news. Absolutely i think you should consider it being really probably should. Here's why what's keeping him in. La paul george. Quite as an need. Paul george to win a championship. Why do we know that. Because leonard went to win a championship in toronto. A place that had also never won a championship with Lowery now i try to make the argument that kyle lowry is as good as paul. George scoffed at me. So i will now agree with you. Kawada leonard can win a championship with lesser talent. So the issue at hand ankle leonard. The issue at hand is the talent that he's coupled with clearly. At least if. I'm why that's what i would look at it as i look around and say well. I went to toronto and one in year one. When it was a harder road traveled. I came here against the easier road. Travel had to fight to get past the mavericks my first year here then. It got eliminated by the nuggets. My my first year here that my second you here to fight even harder to get past the mavericks then. We was in a dog fight against the jazz before i got hurt so clearly. It's not a matter of being in la as the best situation for me caution. Go because we're kawai. Goes the chips go. The chips aren't in the clippers even clip city chips. They'd he's just clip. City city saint in la with the clippers. So quiet has no reason to stay. And i'm very intrigued. You think he should man stop there will. He's not going anywhere. He's going to opt out to get more money as he should because his owner has the most money of all owners in sports. So we have the greatest resources Let's think about that from the top down we'd the best now. All we gotta do is finished arrest which is stay healthy. We a championship simple as that. I'm not even gonna get into player comparisons because it's not about just one individual player buca versus paul george is about the collective and if you think about it the maths. The same team in a decade have not won a single playoff series. Oh you add them. They're they're going to do some you remove him here. We are two days away from the finals. So think about what this team is. What out him. Just add water skiing at a. Why and then we got something there. It's just that simple brooke. Our squad is loaded just got to stay healthy and we could still a slice of los angeles. I lived in taos mazing city. It ain't like sharing it with the lakers. Lakers will always be the one. The cream of the crop in la. I get but there is a slice of laker fans and more importantly fans who are trying to pick their allegiances. Pick their team that we are going to snatch up. We're moving to a new arena. Two thousand twenty four. That are going to be the best in the nba. One because it's gonna be the newest to steve bomber doing it. You're gonna walk in your fridge frauds gonna float to you. You don't think about a shaky. It's going end up in your hand is going to be crazy microsoft. Damn now that said the stable centre is gonna be twenty five years old. Ooh but we got free wifi. They ain't enough so this is what's going to happen. There's gonna be be a ten year old. Who said was team. Do i root for pops. And if he has a good dad is dan's going. Allow him to choose against..

That's next don't speak for yourself getting recommendations from your friends for that perfect diet might be a big waste of time to real answer is already within you your jeans. What are the best foods based on your dna with foods. Have the nutrients that you need. How quickly do you metabolize caffeine and alcohol. Don't guess use the code. Speak for yourself for twenty dollars off. A gino pallet. Dna kit find out how to eat for your g. u. s. brenner chiquet. Is i look at it..

"Game because he was a big giants fan but on the other hand i know what he's getting at. It is a hugely hugely important thing. All right Very happy to welcome. Our gas gabby thomas. And she's teaming up with xeni which is the online eyewear industry leader and gabby welcome to the show. Rick tuttle with you coast to coast around the world on american forces radio network You were not the typical division one sprinter because you went to harvard. You didn't go to florida state or ucla. It's it's very interesting. How did you end up at a league school as an elite athlete because it doesn't happen all the time. yes. I mean You know. I was actually developed at harvard so i remember when i was in high school. Actually reaching out to the top schools you know oregon. Lsu even stanford and hearing back and they were like. Hey these are our standards you know reached out when you can hit them So you know that kind of you know. It was a little bit discouraging but Kind of pushed me to get to where i am now but you know. Harvard recruited me. And i was very serious about my academics as well so i knew that harvard was a place that i could. I could work hard academically and also improve athletically with a really outstanding coach. That's interesting what are what. Were some of those standards. Because i know like from for pitchers they're not gonna draft you in professional baseball if you can't hit ninety on the gun so was there a time for you in the forty something like that In the forty. But i i. I'm sort of standard of changed But at the time. I was one hundred meter runner a long jumper so i i think you know they were looking for. Maybe they might have been looking like eleven eleven. Six eleven five sprinters. I'm one hundred year for women and then long jumping. Maybe nineteen twenty feet. And just just wasn't where that that's been credible so you know when i was growing up. Harvard was just and it still is known as the top school in the country. And some people think that it's you know zuckerberg's and winkle voss twins. I like to think of it as the conan o'brien's and the you know the the comedy aspect of the of the lampoon. What what could you put it in a nutshell. Your experience like at harvard. I mean my experience a harvard. Was you have a little bit of everything right. You have really that athletes You've got people who are just a and passionate about things that they're doing And you know you have a lotta regular everyday people that you would see on the state that just you know. They got into harvard For whatever reason so there there are a lot of you know conceptions and stereotypes about harvard students but but a lot of people are really just Every day just like you. Maybe just kind of work hard you know passionate about whatever. They're doing very cool okay. So the american league indoor series Is going to be airing live on the espn and espn two and The of course as we know. Kobe will not have any fans. But it'll be down there at Randal tyson track and field center. That's at the university of arkansas. A tell us a little bit more about that please. Yeah i'm really grateful to be contracted correctly providing us with these opportunities to compete These days with covid Everything has been really weird. Field has been struggling. You know we don't have these opportunities to run I also just came off of and meet up in new york last weekend. Where i ran really. Well i'm also super grateful. Valentin actually also happens to be my sponsor putting not need on So yeah but the american league we have these events That were every sunday. And i actually was able to compete at one of them is planning on going this weekend as well. And it's been amazing just to be able to touch a track and get that competitive energy back Because a lot of us are going on a year about having had touched tracker gonna competition. So yeah i would think you know a treadmills okay to maybe stay in shape but it is the antithesis of what you do. Treadmill isn't it. Yeah exactly Yeah i it's been. It's been a rough year for a lot of track athletes So we they really cherish any support that we can get that he has contracted again even just my agent. You know even initiating These needs for us. Did i mean how real is it that when you started off running out of pure joy and passion and your competitive nature and here you are new balance any or sponsoring you the. How cool is that. It's amazing it really is a dream come true it's and it's a testament to just how you know just keeping your head down focusing working hard can really just get you places where you don't expect you know i. I didn't expect this going to harvard. I did not expect to have a professional contract off track and field. I expected to finish and do research neurobiology. So you never know everyone's different is there. I mean we know about the the rivalries and the school somewhat nearby and in yale and princeton but do you have a is it cornell or brown their school that you really hate as a rival. Oh we do have a fun. Rivalry harvard yale track as well. We do have our n harvard. Yale needs to be really just you. Everyone get them But for me. My personal rivalries. I tried to push myself to challenge myself a little bit more You know and when oregon you know shopper lsu But at the same time. I also worked really hard. Not to focus on what jerseys people were wearing whenever i lined up on the line to run So that was kind of not my focus but we definitely had our harvard yale rivalry every year. What's that like when those big schools overlooked you and then you come in and they think ivy league and then you're better than them. How cool is the best. It's investigating ever being the underdog and proving people wrong. I mean you can hear the announcement. It's almost any race You can you know. Look me up on They don't expect me to win. And they're always like oh. Wow so carver's That's always a great feeling like yeah. Yeah i'm here. And i've i've been working hard to very call and i have to ask how Rico oh my dog. He's amazing he's on the couch right here next to me. He is the best dog ever very all. Right that is Gabrielle lisa thomas. He can see her on her webpage. Gabrielle lisa thomas dot com gabby thomas as she's known and she's here to talk about the espn and espn two Randal tyson track stadium. University of arkansas. Which she'll be having the track league. Indoor series gabby thanks for coming on the show. Best of luck and hope. We'll catch up down the road. All right we'll take a quick break. We'll come on back at one..
