Fresh update on "gm." discussed on NBA Front Office w/ Keith Smith & Trevor Lane

"Skill to have, but I don't know that's a good skill I want in a server rely on. But let's put all that aside for a second. Major kudos to Dallas. You know, nobody expected this, especially midway through the season. When they were right around 500 or a little under right around the turn of the calendar year, no one thought this was going to be how this went. And there they were in the Western Conference Finals, you know, great season for them, good step forward season. Hopefully now we've answered the can Luca win in the playoffs question. Now it'll turn to you can Luca make a finals, right? But he's got plenty of years left to do that. Let's also talk warriors finals, they're going to be getting a bit healthier. Gary Payton the second should be back. At some point for the finals, obviously deal with that elbow injury from that grizzly series. But yeah, I mean, that's big, I think, for the warriors and their defense. Is he the game changer that's going to completely change the outlook of a series? Probably not, but he certainly a guy that they want in there, a guy that they can lean on for some minutes. They can lean on to make some big hustle plays. So I think this is something that that will matter for the warriors. And certainly help bolster their rotation. Yeah, whether it's Boston or Miami, he's another guy you can throw at the wing scorers because that's one of the things he does best is guard guys who score primarily off the dribble so whether that be Jayson Tatum, jaylen Brown, Jimmy Butler, Kyle Lowry, Tyler hero, whoever those guys are, the patents and other guy you can put out there and just another guy key quality defender added to the warriors who are already playing pretty good defense throughout these playoffs. Yep. Absolutely. Let's move on. Let's talk a little bit about the blazers. Hiring Mike schmitz from ESPN to be their assistant GM super fits from way back. I mean, he used to come on when the Lakers had early draft picks. He was coming on our podcast and talking about Lonzo Ball and players like that. And now here he is. He's actually working for the blazers as an assistant GM, very hardworking guy and knows his scouting for sure. So great great news and great hire for the blazers. Yeah, I think this is great too. I think it is really cool that we're seeing, this is a guy who made his path through the media. He was to use a kite. Kevin Durant term, he was a blog boy back in the day..

The Inspiring Story of Raido GM Barb Yoder

"General manager of the radio station that carries our show in the Tampa Bay Area, really our flagship station since I live in Florida now full time, barb yoder is a pretty amazing woman. She's the general manager of AMH 60 the answer she runs the cluster of Salem radio stations in the Tampa Bay, saint Pete Clearwater region. And she's a pretty remarkable woman. She's a cancer survivor. And as somebody who has followed her for years and worked with her, that was pretty tough for all of us, not to mention what she went through, and yet she beat it. And when she beat cancer, the journey she was on was inspirational to anyone who knows her because being the strong person of faith that she is, she never, ever expressed any doubt or reluctance to embrace the idea that God had this that God was in control no matter what the outcome God had this. And you know that about people of faith, you know that deeply spiritual believers. Understand that no matter what adversity you face, God has this. It may not be the outcome you want, maybe it will. And thank God in barb yoder's case, it was exactly the outcome that we had all been praying for. She beat it, she is fit and healthy and ever smiling and a great presence in my life.

Doug Welcomes Stem Cell Expert Dr. Vincent Giampapa to the Show

"Today's gonna be a great episode. It's one that I've been fascinated now for a while and the things that we're gonna talk about aging stem cells, the advancements in technology, how we deal with our health and our bodies and it's just something that everybody deals with. We're all the time here talking about different issues on the Doug Collins podcast from politics to life to every day. And this one is one I've been excited about for years and as someone who has looked into it, look at how stem cells, the usage of them and also our in our bodies, how we can help make our bodies better. It's been something that I've always wanted to dive into deeper, but also have somebody that can actually be an expert on it in this today is exciting because we have doctor Vincent GM pop on. One of the leading experts in this field. He's been nominated for a Nobel peace, a Nobel Prize Peace Prize probably if he got this all right. But a Nobel Prize on his work, but also many patents, and just in an exciting kind of comment today, we're going to have a great time discussing this. So doctor Jim papa, welcome to the show. My pleasure, Doug, my pleasure. An amazing topic because the model of medicine today is a model that is antique and really can't handle what's going to happen in the immediate future. That is a growth of the aging population on a global basis. You know, today's model of medicine treats symptoms with medications, but not the origin of the diseases we all suffer as we get older. And stem cell therapies are one of the key ways in order to really make a major difference in people's health as we get older, quality of life. And can dramatically drop the cost of healthcare in the future too.

"Here's how Alex Sherman and Laura Kalani at MS excuse me could be but NBC what is a CNBC Report on Elon Musk doing something really for freedom I hope he does I hope he's able to have a very positive impact there And makes a difference because he's one of the few people who's quite capable of it I believe And of course Biden doesn't invite him to the meetings when it comes to electric vehicles He brings in GM and Ford and the others because Elon Musk is non union Of course we can't have that You know my view is union non union We'll take them all but that's not Biden's view of course because he's for democracy and against autocracy So CNBC covers it this way Elon Musk thumbs his nose at the SEC again with Twitter stake And you know it's so pathetic Would that be the same SEC now that is demanding that people comply with climate change regulations I hope they're litigated up the wazoo on that They have no statutory authority to do that whatsoever The SEC disgusting It is disgusting how they march us in this country violate our law abuse these bureaucracies abuse our children it is disgusting the whole damn thing

"You are on the road, you're in Toronto. You're getting ready for one of the leaps in the Minnesota wild as we record episode 22. I'm just going to pan over there. So do you see? And for those listing, you're not getting the full flavor here. No pun intended. But that red box right there. Yeah. 44 year old Canadian club whisky. Part of the chronicles series. Can't wait. Of my tiny melon is a little toy up here. That is also part of the vintage toy collection of the chronicle series. So thank you to Canadian club whisky. Tiny. Tiny head eh? Rule rulers at your whole thing. We've got Calgary flames, general. I don't know how I segued a flames GM Brad levy. I mean, he has had his normal size. He's a big dude. He's a big dude. He's a big dude. And you know, with our Boston pizza. Brad fits in nicely. For sure. And then look, that's going to be part of rapid fire. He doesn't always doing rapid fire, but he is going, we're not giving him an option. So I'm going to walk him into a Boston pizza and say, all right, I want to meet your pizza. 'cause that's my, that's my go to, right? Could you make me a meteor pizza? And see, you better be able to say yes. I mean, his father, Jim, is only owned the Boston pizza chain for the last 50 years. So we'll see. I hope they've kept Brad's hands out of the kitchen. Have you ever seen him handle a puck? No. 4 o'clock. So I forgot an I didn't get into Brandon until the summer of 88. So he had just finished his one and only season with the Brandon wheat kings in 1987, 88 big, lumbering defensemen who went on to play a fair bit of pro hockey. Nothing in the national hockey. They handful of American League games, mostly in the east coast, but we're going to have some fun with them. Today on the podcast because I'm sure he has endless stories. He joined us, I think it was in season one..

Brian Flores Files Discrimination Lawsuit Against NFL

"Most interesting story of the afternoon was Brian Flores. Late last afternoon on the West Coast. It's early evening on the east coast. I'm starting to do my show prep, and I see Brian Flores, who was head coach of the Miami Dolphins for a couple of years, has just unloaded on the NFL. Alleging discrimination against black coaches. And he shot at the NFL and his complaint, and he hit it, but he really took out Bill Belichick. Because Bill Belichick thought he was texting somebody other than Brian Flores. And he was texting, I think Brian did all telling him. Hey, the fix is in. Don't worry, there's the paraphrase I don't have in front of me. Don't worry, Brian, you've got this job, you're gonna get this job. They told me you've got the job. Good for you. You're gonna do great with a giant Brian Florence was in the about to head off to interview at New York Giants land. He had to go through a charade because of the Rooney rule. The Rooney rule requires that you hire at least one African American. You interview at least one African American for every opening for GM and head coach. I think that's the Rooney rule. Now the browns have actually lived by the Rooney rule. They had Hugh Jackson as their head coach. They got the amazing Andrew Barry, who's maybe the best GM in football, both black men who are great professionals. You didn't do so well. But but you can't pretend. And I think Brian Flores, we've got to payday

"We've got four to Panthers GM Billy zito. He's going to join us coming up shortly on the podcast man. Drake. They're the greatest show on ice right now. I mean after game, if you're a team struggling with generate generating offense and I don't, you know, not every team as a world class talent, the Florida Panthers have, but just watch. You know, just watch a period of how that team attacks. It's wave after wave after wave. Well, and just when you think you've got them figured out, mason marchment throws a 6 pointer up on the board. So while everyone's looking at uberto and barkov and duclair, for plus 6 for you, that's a pretty nice line. No kidding and I you know I'm looking at his contract $800,000 this year. And then he's an unrestricted free agent. So his timing is pretty good. Yeah, you know what though? You know, and you know we get into we'll get into it with Billy zito a little bit, but that's one of the things the Panthers have done really well is they found value contracts and made it work for them. You know, they everybody knew that Carter for Hague was close to being a good player. Well, they got him at a really reasonable price and he's given them two really good years. I do see some people saying, well, yeah, you know, but next year they're going to have to pay these guys. Well, that's fine. So maybe you can't. And they move on to another place, and that's where you're scouting has to be sharp because you got to replace them. Or you've got to draft well. And Matt Florida has got some just some exciting players to watch and man 8 goals on Columbus. It was in the second period in your life real. All right, well, Florida path. There's general manager Billy zito.

"Yeah so that's that's a really good call. I want to. I want to jump in. We tease this at the top of the show john schulman's annual nba gm survey. Which i love. Every i think that sometimes it's kind of clear that. Gm's aren't losing sleepover. How they're filling out this thing even if they are filling it out at all which i'm a little dubious up sometimes but there were. There are always questions near that. I love and i find fascinating. So i plucked a select few out and i'm just going to throw them to you kind of rapid fire and we can go through them and i think this is a really fun way to just you know. Take a broad look at the nba where everybody is and preview. The two thousand twenty one twenty two season which is like basically starting tomorrow if it hasn't already started i'm so i mean the first. Let's start just like super big picture and anti-climactic but just like who do you think is going to win the finals. This year. man. Like it's it's i thought that the nets are like i would say the nets are the clear team for me but i can't say that they're that clear. If this guy. Ray thing is gonna be kennedy by anything. Yeah i don't know they could say that I'm gonna go with the jazz i am. I I was not expecting that like this man like i say i say i think the billy will finish in the top three. And you're like whoa. They were the best team last year. The jazz get the best record. Lussier did shaves their day of roster like it's not it's not that surprising that maybe a win the whole thing. It's a jump certainly. It's not the same thing as saying that you think they'll finish with the best record. Even in the survey there were a pretty decent chunk of gm that said they thought the jesuit finish the best record in the west. Yeah i just kind of feel like it. They address things they. And i've said this on our pod before i felt like they quietly addressed stuff. That really messed them up in the playoffs. And whether that's enough to get them all the way over the hump we'll see but they certainly addressed that. I think whiteside will be something that will have to sit and watch. We'll be a day by day process but they have. I mean they have enough offense in my opinion. They have one of the best defenses. If not the best defense this year It'll be interesting. They have small ball fives now that they can roll out. And just you know. And i i i use..

"Plants as well as their final assembly plants. Either they're currently building. Electric vehicles like factories zero or will be in a matter of months or they will be retrofitted so taking existing finally exemplary plans and as v sales ramp up they will convert those either all of them or part of them into electric vehicle. Assembly lines fell into one last question you said. Gm is number three right now in. Ev market share in the us. What is the number to volkswagen. Eleven percent so right now and and those guys are one two three worldwide by the way they are one one-two-three three worldwide. They're one to three here in the us but make no mistake. Tesla is way ahead. Sixty three percent market share. And we asked the automotive. Where do you think tesla is by twenty thirty. And they said look. They won't have as much market share by twenty thirty but they still will have a very strong market share by twenty thirty in their opinion. All right phil. Thank you phil. Abo- we look forward to the interview with the cfo of gm. That's i on. Cnbc here on bass money. Tim seymour how do you trae. Gm the stock did and move all too much on all this news. Yeah we've heard a lot of this news right and also when someone tells me something's going to happen by the end of the decade and it's early in the decade the decade almost just started. You know i mean. I think there's a lot to prove here i think. Gm has a lot to prove. I think gm has already made significant commitment to autonomous. I think the putting the money after the business and again some of the software and services but the announcement that bright drop which is their last mile services business is going to be a ten billion dollar revenue business by the end of the decade. Really exciting but a long long way to go. And i think that's what i said. Yesterday was the market almost values. Gm now like their core business the internal combustion engine business actually has a very limited terminal value and at some point. It's going to be obsolete. Well jim knows that. And i think in all of their profession about they're going to be x by x is great look ninety billion from ten billion in revenue by the end of so from twenty-three they expect to be roughly ten billion in revenue ninety billion by the end of the decade. If you wanna do the math and have some fun with this tesla's somewhere around forty eight forty nine billion estimate sales in two thousand and twenty one. That's not necessarily all be sales at some of the other services to but and tesla's a seven hundred seventy two billion dollars market cap so clearly to companies that are valued very differently They probably should be. I've certainly pointed out that. I think tesla times not really an auto company based upon that valuation. But this gm's day and it's great news. Haven't we heard a lot this news. Before as a gm bowl and owner of the stock. Great stuff i think. They need to put their head down and continue to do this that concept of recurring revenue. Karen seems very appealing Even though this is sort of a long ways off as tim would would put it. But let's let's say we we get to twenty thirty and they checked all the boxes. Does it deserve tesla valuation. It doesn't need to get a test evaluation to have a good do from here. I don't know if it does the other part of that. It's an excellent question. What's the tesla valuation. At that time. If gm does all the things the gm says they can do right so tesla's not going to have a forty six percent better market share than gm at that time if gm can do what it says. I agree with tim though. I mean it's. Gm is a shelby story even when they show the numbers right now right now and still. It still trades it a little multiple so the idea that we're going to jump on and get really excited about twenty. Thirty is sort of hard to fathom because even right now when they put very good numbers. I feel like it doesn't really get so much respect but I remain with tim bullish long. I would have thought this they have been telegraphing this But i thought those were good numbers. We'll see we'll see. I think we'll get a few cars will start. I'm really interested in how the lyric does which is their cadillac. Ev that's coming out in twenty twenty to guide does your thinking around gm change much versus twenty four hours ago now. The jam has put forth targets for twenty thirty. I mean could you put out targets for twenty thirty on your i mean. That's that's a long ways off is the point. I actually could be ninety seven. I'm sure on the name tag. No no the short answer is absolutely not but let's just give them the benefit of the that first of all you know. Karen mentions show me story. They should move all their facilities to missouri. That would be brilliant. We're moving to the show me state and we will show you i folks i mean i don't know jim is watching. But that's pretty clever. And if you ask me and the double revenues by then that sounds great but really what you're talking about in that period of time is eight and a half percent growth rate issue which is fine so you have to ask yourself the question you ask. Karen did they deserve a test evaluation. Absolutely not but based on that growth. What is the right valuation and i would submit. It's not where we are now. It's somewhere closer to ten or eleven times earnings. Which again gets you given the seven dollars. They're gonna earn ish a seven dollar stock. I don't think that's implausible. And i think that's pretty realistic given the environment that we find ourselves in i mean the tasks evaluation has a little bit of You know pixie dust if you will. I mean it's got a lot. These other sort of bets. The battery technology in terms of the power wall and other uses of the battery technology. Not just an auto company steve. I'm wondering what your thoughts on tests are given the low valuation that gm and for three or four in there to have right so so a cabin interesting point and i. I think this is the only thing that you can glean from any of this. Is that when we get there. Tesla is that sixty three percent market. Share now i believe phil said so that market share is going to drop from now till then that's my takeaway whether it's fact or not. That's the way i look at it. Having said that. I think it is pretty exciting when you look at a company like gm talking about two billion in revenue going to twenty five billion by twenty thirty in basically services that we've seen what they can do with on star now..

"General motors now advising chevy bolt owners to not park. "Something like that. We don't is the honest answer. We haven't really spent much time on it. There's so much stuff on our plate right now you know coming off the draft in the trade deadline and now Positioning ourselves to continue to play. Well down the stretch that we really haven't spent that much time on it. Oftentimes those types of contractual situations tend to work themselves out shortly after the season ends. So i think i think to try to keep. Everyone involved focused on Playing deep into october right now and then we'll let we'll let that other stuff take care of itself later at and when do you guys start planning for you know things fun. "And the starting pitching market. I we we have a lot of confidence in our current rotation over the last four months. We've seen our starters go out and give us a chance to win on a nightly basis Additionally web us throwing the ball about as well as anyone right now and we're committed to giving him the runway to continue to grow into a dependable starter for us. I think he has a sub two year in his last eight starts which is impressive against anyone at this level. But it's even more impressive. When you consider the the opponents he faced during that that stretch and we spent many hours talking through our rotation and our belief in webby. I think at the end of the day we wanted to add a starter are only two options would be to go with a six man rotation or to move someone to the bullpen After talking about we didn't feel that either option was a costly solution here. And finally you know to to answer question more directly I think a very important point here is if you look around the league right now. There aren't many teams that have five starters who give them a chance to win every night. If you flip through the box scores on any given night you'll see a collection of bullpen days. Call up spots. Orders players who are option or designated after one star and swing men who are forced into starting roles. It's a very challenging time to build a stable rotation right now and there isn't an endless supply starters out there go and grab for reasonable acquisition costs. I think the prices out there were very high for starter. I think you saw a starters that moved commanded some pretty stiff Prospect packages to acquire them at the end of the day. I think we feel very comfortable with with the way our rotations performing right now I don't think we're naive to think that will only have five starters for the rest of the season that that probably won't happen. There will be unexpected issues. That pop up and i think we may try to manage workloads for our starters and keep them fresh five skipping. Start here and there but we feel really good about them right now. They're performing top four rotation in the game right now. We felt like The best way to use our resources would be to go out and grab a guy like wadia. Grab a guy like chris. Riots to bolster our team. Were you in pretty heavily on on some of Maybe some of the more prominent names. I don't think it's all that appropriate for me to comment on our level of engagement With any other players that we didn't get moreover it's hard to tell if you're in heavy with a player because you don't really know if you get them until the very end So kind of difficult to speculate on that one. Yeah but certainly you were. You were talking about some of the top guys on the market. I'm assuming and to some extent. I think it's safe to assume we we talk about everybody in the room We're certainly in the room long enough. So very cagey okay. So talking about the starting pitching and the depth. You touched on that but obviously we've seen here lately so a little bit of some wobbles from guzman a little bit of a wobble from di sclafani. How much of a concern is that when you don't have a great wealth of options potentially with the starting to pitching depth i mean. It's you have sanchez. Now is a long man in the bullpen. Tyler beatty potentially. Sammy longs getting stretched back out. And i'm assuming that's got kasmir. We'll come back After the olympics are concluded but How do you see those those guys as possible Fill ins and what. What do you make of what guzman and sclafani of kind of been running into post break. Liz ride irish. Santa question about gaza induced afande. I i look at it as a commentary on their work product to date. I think those two guys have set expectations so high for us with the way. Certainly that guzman performed last year. Then this year and then you'll have quickly diesel. Johnny established himself as one of our top starters. This year I think you know the wobbly starts as you described them the the past couple times of. I don't think those are concerned for us. We have a ton of faith in both of those guys as individuals faith in our fishing infrastructure to help them make adjustments. I think you saw kevin gaza and make some adjustments after the first inning in his last. Start that that Allowed him to to command stuff a little bit better for. It's not a concern right now. with respect to the search depth starting options that that you mentioned We're excited to see those guys. We think there may be opportunities for them to start in the big leagues in the near future. And we have a lot of confidence that they'll be able to come up and pitch well for us Dislike you've seen of them do so far earlier in the year. Fantastic the rest of the division mates annoys particularly the dodgers. obviously had. How do you see the division now after the trade deadline. I think we're we're pretty excited about where we stand right now. again you know i. I've sort of been expressing my confidence in this team throughout this interview. Because that's how we look at them. We feel like we can play with anyone right now. I think we demonstrated that the first four months and we we have a nice little lead on on the padres daughters now But that's that doesn't mean that we can get complacent and and stop doing some of the things that that got us here. I've really admired him as a player on the field and as a teammate off the field for a long time and we're thrilled to make a giant and it was really fun to watch him go deep in a second ever at bad as giant on sunday. How would you describe his personality. Obviously we know. He's a good teammate. On the reports of on him as a clubhouse guy or fantastic you mentioned that but What else would you say about him. Just as as a guy. I think chris is additive any clubhouse He brings great energy every day. He he loves to play the game. he really cares about his teammates. And i think one thing that giants fan saw right away after we acquired him is how selfless he is. You know the the message he delivered to us as soon as we got him on the phone after we traded forum was. I don't care where you in the lineup. I don't care where you blame me on the field. I just wanna win. And i'm really excited to be a giant and i think that speaks volumes about what what kris bryant is baseball player. Entertainment how much you feel like maybe your relationships with that people in the chicago office help to further this deal with was that a factor at obviously are far hunt obviously knows everybody in baseball. Well too but but You work there for a long time and came up through that that organization I'm i'm not sure you know. Get the inside. Track to a player if you have worked with. Gm or president before But i think the tone and the openness of the negotiations change when you know that there is trust on both sides. And so. When i was talking to jed hoyer about potentially acquiring chris I think we're pretty blunt with each other I think we knew that we could read each other pretty well and and i think that openness helped us be more efficient in our talks ultimately lay the groundwork for us to be able to acquire chris. And we'll end. What was your call with chris. Like when the trade was. I made especially you know. Having having such a good relationship with him it was a it was a pretty fun. Call i I called him when he was in washington and he was jumping through the phone. So excited niente he. He told me that he had had some conversations with our all-stars colorado about his fondness for for this organization. And he thought you know somehow he was gonna end up a giant Wasn't clear if it was at the trade deadline or or in the future but I had never had a call like that with a player that we acquired Before i think my past relationships with chris made it even more fun in an open call But it it certainly one that that i'm going to remember and it was even more fun to see him when he walked into the clubhouse on sunday. Yeah i mean it looked to me like he got the call while he was in the dugout. Was that you when we've kind of seen that footage of him on the phone in the dugout and then kinda going back into the clubhouse afterwards i think so you have to ask him he He told me he was up on the phone. When i dot com. It looked like these tearing up in the in the video. So i i don't know But either way it was really fun to be able to see that video and again even more fun when we saw him in the black sunday. Now you mentioned Clubhouse fit in the selflessness you guys also reacquired tony watson with the trade with the angels and and that was mentioned a lot with the in the aftermath of that trade to making sure guys are right fit. How do you do that. I mean obviously these are guys that that you know bryant. Well everyone here knows tony watson so well But just in general as you were looking at the deadline. How do you kind of you know. Bet guys from that angle. I think that's a great question. I know four hundred. I were outspoken about the value. We place on culture in chemistry in the clubhouse Observing the way these guys fed off of each other every night for the first four months reminded us to to be careful heading into the deadline. It reminded us to target players who will enhance our clubhouse dynamic not disrupt it that's one of the reasons why we focused on blair's we know at the deadline. You know chris who i know from my time in chicago and wadi who we both know well from last year Stuck out as excellent fits for us on and off the field. It's always easier to vet makeup and Clubhouse presence with guys you know and so i think we felt more comfortable with those types of personalities. But that didn't deter us from digging on on other players who didn't know as well so You're talking to pass teammates talking to pass coaches and leveraging the vast networks that four hundred half but also that has to to make sure that we got a well rounded view of that person on and off the field before we considered acquiring him. There was a lot of talk before the deadline about you guys. And the starting pitching market. How did you guys find that market as you're looking at potentially adding another starter. Which obviously you guys chose not to do that. Took up a lot of conversations in the room for us. And i think i have a few thoughts on on our rotation.

"There's a change happening in automobile ownership. That is big time significant for your wallet. It started as so many other innovative things seemed to do. And the vehicle business. With tesla that has experimented with selling vehicle insurance along with your ownership or lease of a tesla and they only do it in a more limited fashion but something that maybe eventually they will roll out is a national thing. The reason tesla is so keen on this. Is that traditional auto. Insurers seem completely unprepared for an era where the vehicle will do the driving and and think about that. Thought you just sit there while the vehicle drives you to your destination so then if something happens in your in iraq. Whose fault is the car or is it you or is it. Some combination of which traditional auto insurers have fallen flat on their faces responding to the technological change in the market will general motors which is also installing. More and more vehicles with autonomous systems is now launching a car insurance business that they're planning to offer across the fifty states so they're only going to do it in a slow rollout 'til sometime in twenty one when they'll have the legal right to sell auto insurance in the whole country and they've not said when in twenty one it will be available but what they're doing at gm is you know forever. Even before tesla was cool. They've really pushed their onstar connected. Data service that's become steadily more sophisticated. So when you sign up if you choose to if you're a gm vehicle owner chevy <hes>. Gmc truck buick. Whatever cadillac when you sign up you are giving them permission to figure out. Are you driving or is vehicle driving itself and if you're driving how are you driving. What speed are you going at. Are you doing jack. Rabbits stops and starts and stops. Are you doing rapid lane changes in other words. They're going to collect all the data on how you are operating your vehicle and whether you're operating it or the vehicles operating itself one of the penalty box things is if you don't have your tires properly inflated which increases the chances of you being in an accident when your tires or under inflated note to self if you don't have your tires properly inflated just generally not just about the premature wear and tear of your tires it can put you in danger. Get air in those tires. What i do is i have <hes>. An air pump at home. That's a really good one that i can just <hes>. Hook it up to the to the cigarette lighter. They're still is such a thing in the car and hook it up the tire and just watch the meter to see when he's got the right. Psi the right <hes>. Number of pounds of air in the tire. And then i know that tire is right and safe but the idea of vehicle insurance changing like this is this is only the beginning where we will be judged based on who who's driving how we're driving and where we're driving and the traditional idea of auto insurance is not over but it's definitely at the beginning of the end in how we pay will be completely different potentially per mile of variety of ways that we will pay for vehicle insurance and if you are a gm vehicle owner and you have on star when this coverage is available. Look at it and see if it would be a money saver for you instead of being with a traditional vehicle insurer.

"Three weeks ago on this show, , we talked about Nikola, , the electric truckmaker because. . On Day, shares , of Nikola were more than thirty five percent on the news of its partnership with General Motors. . That was a lifetime ago. . The deal was supposed to close today. . That's not going to happen in terms of closing today and. . This seems like a story in Flux Maria because a couple of hours ago I was looking at that. . The available information and thinking to myself well, , I think I. . THINK GM is backing out of this deal. . We had the whole thing with Nikola and the founder Chairman of the board resigning immediately. . Deleting his social media accounts, , allegations coming out and it, , and it seemed like. . A couple of hours ago. . Maybe Chan was just backing off altogether. . Now it looks like they might be just negotiating better terms because shares of Nikola were down first thing this morning. . then. . All of a sudden. . They spiked up eleven twelve percent <hes>. . Where do you think this is going? ? It's really interesting. . So Nicola is has ambitious to make electric and hydrogen powered trucks. . They want us and lease battering hydrogen-powered semi trucks, , tip businesses for anyone who wasn't sure what the company did. . So what this deal was supposed to be was GM would get two billion and Meka ls stock paid for with services and various. . GM. . Parts and components and GM engineer and manufactory manufacturer the manufacturer, , the battery and Fuel Cell Versions of Nicholas Badger track. . So at that time when they were talking about three weeks ago. which. . . Feels like a lifetime ago two billion dollars was an eleven percent stake because Nikola at one point, , their values over thirty billion, , which is larger than Ford and now the market cap is less than seven billion. . So that two billion went from an eleven percent stake toe mustard over a twenty percent stake. . So it's interesting if they're negotiating different terms, , what that will look like going forward because two billion is now a much more sizeable chunk of that company than it was a week or two weeks ago. . Yeah I mean just in terms of Nicholas stock three weeks ago on the show we when we were talking about it, , it was fifty dollars a share today it's below twenty even with this little bump up. . That we're seeing and it just. . I want to give the benefit of the doubt Mary Barra the CEO of General Motors and her team. . Because she's a very experienced you know for for whatever you think of GM, , the company and whatever you think of the stock and from a stock perspective, , it has not been a particularly great place to be over the last five to ten years. . That being said, , she's an experienced professional in this business. . So I wanNA give her and her team to benefit of the doubt. . I I look at. . Everything that is unfolding. . And I have the thought that I've had at various points in my life as an investor I look at a either an individual company or just an evolving situation and I just conclude there too many question marks here. . There are just there are too many unknowns there too many question marks I kind of want to wait for the dust to settle to see what the new terms are. . If the deal actually closes and then see where think shakeout. . Yeah I think Nikolas definitely more of a speculative investment since a cart and they haven't actually manufactured car yet but I will say, , I, , am on the side of I really want them to do. . Well, , I hope that a deal works out with GM, , because I think the future of electric powered vehicles is one that we're moving towards I think it's one that I would like to invest in I. . Think Right now betting on them is completely speculative because you have no idea what they can produce but I do think it's important to note that within all of this is shown that there is a. . Demand, , they had an order for over twenty five, , hundred electric garbage trucks from public services they there was an order I over fourteen thousand tracks from Ab Inbev which are planning to use them for long haul deliveries from breweries to distributors. . So I think it's important to note that no matter what happens with this company specifically I think this trend is one that's going to have a lot of tailwind. . So if I was working at GM and I wanted to be a part of that I, don't , think this is a bad option I. . Don't think that this deal is necessarily completely a bad idea for GM.

"See out of all carry said all all this after finishing with fourteen points on six for twenty one shooting in the nets won seventeen one zero six loss to the seventy sixers Tobias Harris big in that one so people are frigging skyrocketing. You know saying stuff about his team midseason here saying we need pieces one or two pieces and how. It's glaring that they need to be better but the the first question I'm asking you guys are carries comments here after that loss last night. Are they being overblown. They are being overblown true or false. Well I think we're having is is acting the way he thinks a superstar should act and he's playing GM and that's how he thinks he needs to wheel power and show that he is the Alpha dog on this team. He's basically saying yeah. We gotta get some guys some guys out. He needs to put some of his teammates down in a way like he did in his Boston and Celtics days. He needs to sort of speak that way. Because that's how he thinks a superstar should act. So if I if I am jared Allen or or Taurean prince or Joe Harris the guys he didn't mention at the end. I hope that I can get out of my mortgage or I hope that I'm renting in Brooklyn because I I don't think bodes well for those dudes Y because superstars do wheel that power and that's the way the NBA is. And I think he is taking the following in the footsteps of Lebron run in in that he wants to be the guy who shows that he has all that power like. Lebron did over the Front Office of Cleveland for years and I think curry's following in those footsteps and he's falling in the footsteps as well of himself like last year with the Boston Celtics this. I think it's very similar in that. He may have not said. Hey those young guys suck doc the same way he did. Last year. I'm paraphrasing. They need a seasoned vet last year. Similar a similar type of stuff especially after six twenty one especially especially after he's only played fourteen games from the. It's a little bit surprising. And that he doesn't just bide his time and see how the season goes. She just felt the need to say something. But isn't isn't this. Just Kyrie sort of sloppily saying yeah we need Kevin Durant. Can you not look at these comments. Just that's all he's really saying like that one piece is is really key he mentioned Katie is a guy they have. I mean obviously they need Katie back to be anywhere close to what they're doing but this to me seems more like you say once wants Katie. Gets back we still need something which is probably true. Kyri is probably right about what he's saying but like saying the guys played three games since he came back he missed twenty five games. Now now's not the time. And that's why I think things are being overblown a little. It's because Kyrie likes the speakers mind and when he does so. It's usually kind of a weird timing. I feel you like it is. We're timing. These comments definitely sound like something may be after the season not before the all-star break when you've been for awhile and your team right and you're still in the playoff upon you know like what you're you're right there it's weird. It is classic Weird Timing Kyri doubt it we'd have. We did call at some of his teammates all messages. I like I like these guys but I want these guys here. I mean okay well right. So you're saying him omitting like tasks Jared Allen Joe Harris whatever twenty prints yeah like so y. Yeah down is better than D. Andre Jordan Fisher and Joe Harris has better than temple already. So but I don't know I always with Kyrie's like we like dissect I suspect what he said but I don't know apart of me just thinks it was classic like he was crap they lost again. They've been bad. You know I when he wasn't there at the end of the streak there when it before he came back and then even with them and it's just saying like is this all right. We'll be a different team. We're going to be a different team because we got Katie coming. Well Donald Carter. He's GonNa win you some Games James. He's GonNa lose your some games. I think last night falls into the latter category because he was bad down the stretch in the fourth quarter against the good team on the road and he was frustrated. But I don't think these comments help but but I think I helped the locker room for him to be kind of making a division there and all my saying to the GM Sean Marks. Okay get us some better place here. Here are the guys you can get rid Alvin. Get someone else. It's not that easy but also saying the last few years. Yeah you guys were overachieved with your young players and now we gotta get our good guys in here and make take another another step and so yeah. He's saying the team will be different but he's also putting down his teammates. Yeah I mean the part that he does say we included included in that clip. He says it's glaring that you're missing a big piece here. We all know that okay. That's obviously Kevin Durant but we can't continue to make that excuse we've got to go out there and compete continue to lock in and see where we end up. He was garbage right. The the timing of within the season right after a game where you are crap seven in the fourth and the team's been better without you like have they were five and nine in games. He's played they're eight and thirteen since the start of December that it's mostly without Kyrie. They're just like they're not nine and five when he's been playing. Yeah they're basically the same. I'd say with okay but you know if just like Boston when when really you know everything start to come down around Kyrie when he said you know the young guys got to play better. He said we've got comp yesterday. Said we've got complimentary young guys as well that have done a great job. The last three years collectively I feel like we have great pieces. But it's pretty glaring. We need one more piece or two more pieces that will complement climent. Same list of guys as he mentioned there Durante. Andre Jordan Garrett Temple likes the vets Spencer dinwiddie caregiver. He's saying I think he's just taking as I said taking the role the superstar in what he thinks that embodies and in today's NBA. It embodies roster changes and I I hope for those guys that they can find somewhere else. I think Harry is saying yesterday after that game. Hey we need to look to move jared Allen and Joe Oh Harris and Taurean prince for other guys other pieces really. He's saying he wants a roster with his he's I think he's just saying I'm going to be the GM of this team. Yeah well that worked out badly forum in Boston. I mean when he when he when he took this sort of stance of me against some of the players. That just didn't work the way their season ended. It was a disaster in Milwaukee and look at the Boston has been playing so far this point. They seem a lot more together. And that's the problem. I mean Joe. Harris is a free agent anyway at at the end of this season. So He's GonNa get paid. He's a good play good shooter. He's he's a modern day player so I may be car. He's got to figure out a way to utilize guys a little better than he's doing. Maybe Kirie just needs. It's the stay away from the MIC. He just gets himself in trouble anytime he starts trying to get deep and talking about his team's construction where they're headed. You know like I just wonder if maybe he's sitting in the locker locker room he's asked. This question is looking around the guys. What of Joe Harrison Jared Allen around the shower? That's why they didn't get mentioned. And now we're dissecting on the team and who he doesn't want on the team I think it'd be a lot more more innocent than it sounded but the timing of is bad you've been out for most of the season you come in and you're trashing. Some of your players doesn't make sense. He wasn't looking around though you can see the clip appear just looking down. He wasn't looking towards the showers. Peripheral Vision guys got incredible handle on the court. You think that doesn't translate to his outer life well. He was wearing a hat. That was the because curved at a forty five degree angle. I don't think you could see right or left I. I don't think Joe Harris showers after the rugged beard. I don't think so I think it's going to be him and Katie at the hierarchy of this team for years. So that's he's not carries not going anywhere but I don't think it does well for the locker room or for their shower experience. It's not good for the team but at the at the end of the day just like when Kyrie Irving was with the cavs and they quote unquote didn't talk for months. They won a championship. And I think that's that's where he lived with Kyrie. That's just the Geek. The weight guys is almost over. Simon Williamson is expected to make his season debut. January twenty second against the Spurs Executive Vice President David Griffin told reporters. Yesterday Grif if said Williamson will not be on a minute restriction when he returns true or false. Pelicans can still make the playoffs definitely true will. They're probably not but they definitely could if Zion comes back in you know Griffis saying that. He looks even better than he did during the preseason which could be scary if he comes back we've seen teams get hot before I remember. When Nicola Miratec came back for the Bulls? They were a terrible team. They won eight straight games just because they added a talented a player who hadn't had a scouting report season. That's a that's an advantage. No doubt for the Pelicans than you look at a team like the grizzlies. This year. They won six straight games. Suddenly there in the playoff mix and if that happens for the Pelicans they win five or six straight there right there in the mix and then who knows what happens during the last couple of weeks of the season. The pelicans playing much better to recently so he can come back and have an impact immediately. There's no reason why they can't compete. Because they're only four games back of the Grizzlies and apart from the San Antonio Spurs the teams ahead of them of the wolves sons and the blazers all teams that have had struggled throughout the season at some point. So if the Pelicans I think more than just Zion can keep themselves healthy keeping him on the court Lonzo Ball on the court it gives gives them a chance at least but but it's as trite saying will probably not so many things need to go right for them to do it from here. It's just exciting to actually we have Zion playing. He's GonNa play more than just a handful of games at the end of the season. He's hopefully is going to play at least thirty thirty five games we get a real a real look at him because for a while there we thought maybe he's not GonNa play at all they just going to keep underlying it but clearly griff wants to get mad then getting some reps and this is I think it's got to be a good thing for the Pelicans because you're gonNA see met there and we saw them in the preseason shot seventy two percents seventy one point four percent I don't expect him to quite scored Kristin. She's going to be better just what I did like about him when he when he played preseason he looked ready to go he looked like he was an NBA player already. So hopefully the transition from him not playing playing is short and he can go out there and make make a big name for himself because it'd be great to see. This is a great time. It's fun to be excited for a January twenty twenty second game against the San Antonio Spurs And I think he'll come out of the gate strong because they've waited this long. I think they've waited the proper amount of time they weren't GonNa rush him in and David Griffin An eloquent man son. NBA TV. Last season. I don't I don't think he just throws words out there..

"Day. GM in the united auto workers failed to come up with a new agreement on pay and benefits but they are continuing their negotiations. The economic impact of this strike is significant the stoppage is estimated to be causing the Detroit automaker somewhere between fifty and ninety million dollars a day if not more for every GM worker on strike seven other other jobs in the US are impacted by the way the last time that GM face a strike was back in two thousand and seven with more. We're joined here in studio by John. All grades seem good to be here Harley Merrick. Thank you very much for your time today. Gentleman Marc Pleasure to be here. Thank you how much of this from GM side is what the future of the Industry John Paul may be in ten in years and and the concerns that many automakers are having right now I I would say this strike is not a surprise for a bunch of reasons and you know a view of the basics here in the financial crisis the UAW made a lot of concessions the last time they renewed the contract in two thousand fourteen they did not go on strike and they didn't press for very many changes and so the members feel that some changes are are long overdue. Oh picking one company I is common and then you hope the pattern holds with the others and GM has been the most profitable GM has also so announced closing of these four plants in the last year which was very controversial and the union was very upset about that so I think what you're alluding to is absolutely the case ace. GM is like all the incumbent auto makers having to balance keeping the legacy business going while investing massively in these new technologies which are going to be so important in the next stage of our mobility so whether selectric or a Thomas vehicles or connected vehicles etc massively expensive. We've seen all kinds alliances and acquisitions and things to try to deal with that you know sort of future technology side of things meanwhile the you know record high. I sales of the last few years are starting to decline so the industry enters its predictable cyclical downturn right at the time of this as well so it's not what's so surprising that the two sides are pretty far apart at the moment and that the strike has resulted Harley. Give us your thoughts on it and whether or not you think this is going to be a lengthy. CBS like these workstoppage well. I think John Paul really gave a good summary. I'll bet there are critical issues for GM and the U. A. W. al-bia underlying it is the fact that the that General Motors is here today in large part because of UAW workers and the union when it slid into bankruptcy in two thousand nine the union was vital in Washington to get fifty billion dollars dollars from the federal government to rescue the company and the workers made very large concessions at a moment of real crisis very painful full to get it through at this point in time. GM has viewed those concessions at a moment of crisis as a normal way of doing business in this about thirty percent of the workforce at General Motors about forty six thousand workers is earning significantly less than senior in your workers. Earn and another seven to ten percent are temporary workers. That's a bit of a misnomer since they can work for three four five five years or more and they earn fifteen dollars an hour for the Union for the workers they're aware of all the crisis that taking in place in the industry and the challenges for GM but they're also aware in light of record profitability thirty five billion dollars over the last asked three years but they can't get some of this return now when Merrick your thoughts well. I think both sides are in a difficult position. vote professors summed it up very well although they're in a difficult position. I think the elements of an agreement are available. It's just a matter the parties trying to work through them and I heard an interesting report in the news this morning they were talking to one of the strikers the Detroit area and he was saying you know this is is what has to happen now and then and he has confidence in the party's ability to get things done and realizing that the cost of not getting things done are very very high. I think both parties although they seemed far apart a couple of days ago maybe making some progress toward narrowing their differences the thirty five billion dollar number John Paul over the last three years. That's a that's significant number in terms of this overall discussion. The Union says you've got thirty five billion dollars profit. You've made over the last three years. Why can't we get a little bit more of it but leading to what we were just talking about out of that thirty five billion dollars how much of that money he's going into all of this other technology in the development of it that that they know they're. GonNa need for years to come yeah. I mean jam would say okay well. We've had profit sharing airing so each union members been getting about eleven thousand a year from that. That's one piece where we're sharing it with you. and of course Wall Street has been happiest with GM's. strategic moves over this period of time some of that. Is You know they're of. They've got a leading electric vehicle in the bowl. They've got crews as they are a ton of SIACA acquisition. They've got on star. They're kind of doing well in that area but they also shrunk a bunch bunch around the world which is interesting the days when growth and scale was the thing that was viewed as a sign of success those days have at least partially change when and GM got out of Europe got out of some other markets the stock market applauded and that's been one of the source of the Prophet so you know the UAW is looking at this. They're seeing product move to Mexico. They're seeing GM downsizing. They're seeing big executive bonuses and they're like yeah okay so you have to invest in the future but you got to invest in us to you want to have good quality products and keep loyal customers America. You're obviously right there in the in the heart of this in the state of Michigan with the the headquarters of of the three big automakers right now what is the the the mindset in the state right now about this industry which has been is so important to the strength of Michigan over the years and especially when you see facilities that are that are shuttering like like the Hamtramck facility well. I think the mindset is one of concern. There was a report it in the paper this morning that if this were to continue for a significant period of time it could push Michigan into a recession it could be a single state recession in the country but that would only occur if the strike were for a very prolonged period of time. I think it's important to remember that most of the attention the past few days has focused on where we have been brought up yet in that is a scandal surrounding the W and that's what everybody's attention and has been focused on the entire discussions about the negotiations center on what impact the scandal might have on the Union Union. There are a lot of skepticism a lot of speculation. I try not to indulge too much of that. The parties I think are generally trying to figure things out right now and I think that that's where their attention is focused and that's where it should be Harley. What do you get as a a sense for this industry right now. The industry face is very large challenges. GM has done some impressive things with electric vehicles with its. It's moves in autonomous technology. It's got a ways to go. That's very clear but key to the industry and this is easy to forget is a highly ming motivated highly skilled workforce that can make a world of difference in all kinds of ways. GM has that but there our cost to maintaining that and that's something that Wall Street is often tone-deaf to being focused more narrowly on the bottom line but losing that motivation nation having an angry workforce that has a cost to and that's not helped given the current situation and what's taking place both with the the earlier closure of for plant and now with the bottleneck at the bargaining table. Most important is collective. Bargaining does is work. There will be a settlement. The question is at what cost yeah I was GONNA say. I think it's important that the parties rebuild trust a lot of this and I think professor mcduffie alluded to it as well as professor shaken Gem I think made error tactical error and how it handled handled the layoffs and plant closures I and the timing of that and the way it was done I think left a very bitter taste and not not only the blue collar workforce but also the white collar workforce and I would say wow you do need a highly motivated workforce I would say compared to four or GM's workforce. Historically has not been as highly motivated relations between management and labor have been more tense in that company than they have been Ford and so building the trust is something going forward. I think they really need to focus on. That's why important for both sides and there are good people people on both sides negotiating to get this deal done and then think about what the future might look like and try and you no give people a better sense of hope and optimism about the future temple yeah. I think the point about the plant closings America Point about the plant closings is a really interesting one December of last year. The company knew that these negotiations were coming coming up. it wasn't a new situation these the volume of the products built in those plants had been declining mostly sedans you know the UAW could point to to a letter where jam it said we won't close any plants then there was a clause that said in unless there are drastic changes in business conditions and GM says well the products aren't selling pulling UAW says well. Why didn't you put some other higher faster selling products in there. If your plants were truly flexible like some of your competitors you could've you could've done that. I do think think they suffered a pretty big back backlash. Maybe they were playing a little bit more to to Wall Street in that case they got blasted immediately by the president for up up closing the plants and you know now that their proposals for settlement include putting new product in those plants putting battery-making Lordstown it it almost looks like they were positioning themselves to you know have negotiating chip for this which is when there's something as dramatic as plant closings in a lot of laughs involved is not not exactly. GonNa win the hearts and minds of the workforce well America. Let me talk about Mary Barra for a second here because jump all mentioned about the president and the tweets that he sent out. We'll Mary Barra met with President Trump if if memory serves me pretty soon after that Mary Barra is is is a child Eld of this company she came up through the through the ranks and I think to some degree even though you have her as the CEO and she has to take the role of you know of the executive. I think a lot of people would say well. Wait a minute. She understands the company. Why are we having this kind of of stoppage at this point well. I think that you know there are a variety of forces at work which are entirely separate from her persona and are are beyond her control. They're really beyond anybody's control. I think the union feels that at great sacrifices are made they're still as professor shaken pointed out a significant part of the workforce which is not making the legacy workers wages and we'd like to do a lot better and there's a lot of distrust. I think the company rightly or wrongly about its willingness to fulfill its commitment to the workforce and then on on the other hand you have the company facing very turbulent on certain industry with heavy demands for capital investment and it's not surprising I think is we started out discussing that. You're you're at this point right now now. The reports are that if the union had had more time to review the proposal that GM submitted just a couple of hours before the strike deadline. We might not have been in this spot. I don't know if that's the case or not but the parties talk for a long time yesterday they started meeting early this morning and I view that as a good sign that they're trying to work through some very very difficult issues and it will take some time for them to get it done but I don't think it will take forever. I don't think that we could end up with like in nineteen ninety eight with the selected strike that occurred of fifty four days. You know I just did a rough calculation. It's estimated that General Motors loses about fifty million dollars a day for the strike and if that were to last fifty four million dollars that would deplete about twenty five percent of its free cash and while the companies have made a lot of money nominally. It's still not a very sexy industry to be in profit. Margins are relatively low. Capital investment requirements are huge. Their debt-to-equity ratio is pretty high so all of these things I think you know..
