"Forget it ever happen. says here the scenes with the gargoyles running and moving. were. Slowed down to give the GARGOYLES. An unnatural. JERKY quality. Like. The Turkey boys chief met one. Yeah. Some of that. were. The hotel in the film. Was An old of business, hotel near Carlsbad New Mexico. It was actually burned down for the film. The ruins were later recorded as a historical archaeological site. With. The New Mexico department, of historic preservation. So did they did they burn down an archaeological site or did they decide that Oh this movie was mayor this is an archaeological site because Gargoyles was filmed there. Yes that's what I'm saying. Well. They need to remake this. I think big it's worth a remake. I think. So but you know how hard it is like narrow it down to I mean everything that I searched for before was obviously the cartoon from like the nineties. Yes No. Association. Between these till it has more association with like that episode of tales from the dark side for the guy or the hardest. Since that Lisa Bonet now that was a Radon Sean. Radon Song and. The Guy from the warriors Michael Beck. No the other main guy Crap, I can't think of his name. Mind is twinned blank. Oh, the Garg oil from the tales from the dark side movie Berry James Remar who I was trying to think of. The artists. And she says we can. We can just have sex all the time. And hang out. if you don't tell anybody that I'm a gargoyles and you know what? He fucking tells people where you can't. You can't that something you can't keep under your belt though he merely hey, I, gotta get this off my chest. Yeah. You don't. You can't go tell your priest now I mean now definitely that would work. I'll just get drunk at a bar and tells some random person. I don't remember how that actually happens to tell you the truth. I remember saying the. The tells dark side movie at the. Theater. Didn't. It also have Christian slater in one of the episodes. Yes. The Big Christian it has everybody in it. Steve Shaming. Julian Morrow right. David Johannesen yeah or also known as. Buster poindexter. Extra couldn't quite think of it is in the New York. Dolls. Niagara Falls. William Hickey, oh the oldest man and he was old before he was actually. Yes. Robert Klein there's James Remar. Forever. In that movie. By why is that movie sound a wild? I need to go revisit. Anyway. Love, the TV movies I think will probably do. A few more few more. As this was, I, think our oldest film was not seventy two. That's. About, as early as we've done. Yeah. You're right. So that makes this movie just as old as I am wow who and who held up more. We're GONNA find out. Next time on. Press Your Luck. Okay. So you're going to post a picture yourself on twitter. And then a picture of Bernie Casey laughing maniacally as a Gordon. And we're going to have a vote. Have a poll take a look at the ratio held up better. Yeah..

"But I think that's you know there wasn't anything else going on, but those eggs had to be very flammable exploded. He went up the way they edited that it almost looks like Scott Glen explodes he lights that thing with all the gargoyles around him, and then there's like a big kind of like an explosion. And you don't see those gargoyles and you don't see him. They all just like spontaneously combusted. I don't know I have no idea the showdown between Cornell wild and Bernie. Casey they've been talking in a knows he can reason with a my yes. He hits the he damages the ones wing. Right I guess it doesn't kill her that she does look very fragile when she's an old of Gargoyles. So that's when he was like. Hey. I want my daughter. You WanNa live and perpetuate your species. Here's your chance grab her and get the hell out of all do the same. Yet pretend this never happened. Right. Exactly. They all just walk away. It's like a like they went to key party together and they just don't WanNa. Look each other in the. Not a good ending. No I was not a very satisfying ending just to see the gargled. With his his wingspan that. Could not hold the mass of what he is. He never got up high enough. To where he was just going to go live. So, it's not like the wings are just for show. They must have they have some other means of propulsion but that's what made me think of because she mentions the matriarch mentions that win the little boy was born or what when the little gargle sorry. Don't mean to put up gender on a gargoyles. When it was born a was a breeder but he had wings as well. So it made you. Thank that. Okay the ones with wings are the only ones that can breed the other ones are gist sleaze tax I think all that type of stuff was thought about like way later like shit maybe we should explain some of the stuff. But they never do. Just left with so many questions. Like. How did they think that lasts like flying scene look good. Yes. I guess that was on the eighth or ninth day it was like all right.

"That's the go to move in any movie. I think it's the finally use the weapons just a blunt instrument. So Bernie Casey basically says come with me if you WanNa, see your daughter Cornell's just like jog after. Yeah, he's like, okay I guess. That's what we're doing. Now I trust you implicitly. But when they get into the cave, he's kind of taken like A. It almost looked like he's been beaten up a little bit more as an he got smacked on the head. I it's already smacked on the head he got roughed up. Will he got shoulder check by that one guy? And then kind of twirled the ground. Bernie Casey knocks him off of that little thing that they were on. and. When he gets up, it's almost like the actor Cornell Wilde is trying to decide like. Hurt at any kind of settles on his arm he Kinda rubs his arm a little bit. I keep just felt like twelve feet on your back when Bernie throws him though he just cackled he standing up there those wings and just cackles. I throw you Pudi man. Yeah emotionally he's kind of all over the map. I would think that gargoyles would be more straight laced. Yeah. Bernie Casey sounds like a is like gargoyles professor something he's a professor of the Gargoyles Arts. Gargoyles. Studies. So he's got Diana and the matronly Gargo Pulls Cornell Wilde off, they're going to get their own room and I must say. Hannah doesn't seem to I mean she's like this is our first day. I'm not going to let you you know and they look like they've just been like smoking a joint had a couple of glasses of wine reading some books he he creeps down on her though it's kind of suspenseful. Yes. You'll wonder what he's GonNa do you gotta remember it's made for TV at imagine if this was rated r. that's the movie I WanNa Sing Director's cut the Snyder at a gargoyles. Yet. So that we get to see another one of these gargoyles which we saw snippets of the the eggs hatching and the very opening when they were doing the the exposition at the beginning. These baby gargoyles ugly I'm just going to say it. I'm saying right there. They are one of them comes out and kind of looks like the baby from dead alive and. Like ugly baby. Just got like. On it's faith Kinda slime on its face, but that's just the way I think about all kids. Let's just confirms it. Okay, so the matriarch comes to get. Coronel. Wild well, I. Think she said that she was going to take her to take him to her daughter his daughter God I came talk take him to his daughter but it Kinda seemed like she just wanted to get him alone to right exactly. That's what I thought was.

"That take that Hageman. Did they bury Larry Hagman just a giant hat he demanded it. They find the cave and the Gargoyles at when He. Bernie Casey is up there kinda mounted in front of them until you know. Ordering them to attack. Yeah is laughing like a maniac are like kind of screaming. There is probably fifteen gargoyles they're in costume. Standing at the mouth of the cave. The we've never seen there's been like three of them. Like one of them's dead They're really ineffectual. They killed buddy in an old lady. But. Then when they're confronted with these guys that one guy that just kind of putting. He's dead. I guess we're meant to think that they were like really like digging their claws in, but they really vary basically just like kind of rubbing him. Home. But that one does that like straight legged like jump up onto the Bronco Hood. House. Pretty cool. It's pretty cool. Our friend Jj Var now could do that. He could jump up onto the roof of his car from just standing strict that the natural. And now. There are goal riding a horse. There's a gargoyles that looks like a has a praying mantis head. Yes. I saw that I actually liked that but that's really like, okay, guys we're getting to the bottom of. The makeup box. We're just GONNA put some old like. Motorcycle Goggles, and spray paint your head green when they start launching themselves off the little trampolines. Over pretty. Cool. Fun also earlier when they were in that big scene with the kind of matronly one and she's still talking to name that one hatches you know yes and they pull a straight up kid out there you know. Mean I'm sure it's a little boy. It did not look like a little person. You know what? I mean? No. No it looked like a young child. Yes and I'm like man that kid had all that makeup on. Shirley they were like. Maybe. You know like breaking a couple of like. Child labor laws or something I didn't see him credited in the movie at all. Yeah. Because he's dead. Like I said in the seventies, it was like acceptable losses if you could. Just write them off the script. Yeah. So the big attack from the Gargoyles and Cornell Wilde is just an ace with a shotgun. Yeah. He is blowing him back and forth one of them. Freakin GIS tackles just clips him. I saw that as it runs by gave him a shoulder check or something like they're playing field hockey. But again, Cornell Wilde is a demon all adjust. He's probably killed many demons right someone. Does so Bernie Casey comes up at the end of it riding a horse and yeah. Even. I guess the shotgun was empty 'cause cornell was just going to use it as a bat to swing at Adam. That's their..

"So we left Diana with Bernie Casey in. Stan. Winston makeup sniffing her hair tugging at her top. Okay here. Here we are I'm sorry. Convoy was performed by bill fries. who also, he has a soundtrack credit on mystery science theater what? Yeah. Okay. It was on ripped tickets Okay. That's new MS okay. Okay. So you think that the gargoyles are this is kind of like a not quite a Shamlan twist, but you think the gargoyles are just kind of like mindless monster sort of because all they've done so far is just break Balsa wood doors and. Ninety little tables. What did Cornell while that was going to this is going to buy us a few seconds. Yes all it did the lamp was on that thing the light one, twenty bus. Many. Anyway but maybe that just speaks more to the construction of stuff back in the seventies bribe. But riddle me this. Now, I swear in the dialogue that Bernie Casey says, they've only been awake for two weeks. Okay. That's what I was hoping. You could clarify low vet because. I couldn't figure out if they were. Old Creatures that had been hibernating which I think that's what it is. I think that's what they weren't just birthed two weeks ago they had been hibernating or in some type of like A. Suspended animation. Chur. Okay. So but where do all these eggs come from? So that's basically they a hole. Cave I help clan of of gargoyles and a ton of eggs. So somebody's Ado In. The? Nasty. which can be seen on at forty nine. Oh two. Oh almost there. Bernie, Casey's talking to the the matriarch. About you know the eggs hatching what she turns and he slaps her on the L.. Yeah, he does. He does he gives her like a good game. He does a locker room. was that about letting you know that? Yeah. Even old ancient creatures can get it on like Bernie Casey was low get Outta here baby. Yeah. I may be green and slimy. I don't want you to see what I'm going to do to this human humidity. Take a nap. It's Bernie. Casey was not very good. So. That little bit of emotion and you know. And she hugs him when he comes in, you know and she's like stressed out and crying, we're calling her the matronly gargle. Only because she's the only one that has like, would you say like female features and a WIG bribe? Basically, every gargoyles looks different than the one beside it. They could have made him look all the same. That was interesting choice. But then also that just end that they have like you know they're. They're you know n even that asks slap as like A. Community in love and it wasn't. He wasn't being mean now no he he was like we're GonNa make some eggs later..

"Oh, my God, she does break into the sheriff's desk-drawer. She's just like I'll have some of this. He's like this is the third report today and it's all bullshit us come and drink my booze. That's my share booze too. But the Gargoyles have been running all night to get her back to the cave eight Bernie Casey has. Well and they also want their they also want their brother I assume. But they've been running all night and it's they don't get to the cave until morning the sun is up. Yeah. He has been carrying this hundred and twelve pound girl Vermeil? Time and space in this movie are questionable. You never know how far the hotel is away from their cave and how far the jail is away from the hotel don't ever show you any, but they don't hesitate really to show you the Gargoyles in light they they wanted to show off this makeup. and. One right when they're going in, you know you see that kind of matronly. Gargoyles you know it kind of turns around and heads towards the cave and basically looks like it has a like a saggy diaper. Casiraghi. Diaper. Leaked They couldn't figure out butts. You know how to make like a monster, but how to make a monster but as your new coffee table, right? Coffee Table Book Yeah. Coffee Iveta one beer one beer. Because we got the Mrs. What's her face going into the share ARC's everybody basically is going to end up going to find the girl is that been abducted by the Gargoyles? So we're forming our own posse which includes everyone in the town. Basically everybody else in the movie except for. Diana and the Gargoyles well, except for buddy the. "What did I say? Canadian? Yes, that's very odd what I meant to say okay. Good. The scene where the gargoyles like bust into their motel room yes. which their motel rooms like a whole like floor of a house or something it has a couple of big spaces. Yeah. So one gargoyles like in the bathroom like trying to make up and shit. Looking for the skull right I guess but also Mommy's not there. So they're going to try lipstick on and stuff. Cornell is wearing like Aladdin pants like kind of these like flow e like. Looks like the bottoms are just a jeans pants. One gargoyles shuts the bathroom door just to make it explode from the inside. Is already open is causing much damage as he could. There's like three or four of the gargoyles that are just coming to ravaged their bedroom still the skull, right? Right. Why is every action scene for the Gargoyles? Yeah. We sped up the car chases I was thinking about that too and if it was in regular. At regular speed, I mean I think the slow motion does make it slightly crappier maybe their makeup alone it's not like terrifying right And these guys the whoever they look kind of like the drones they just have like beaks. You. Know they kind of look like the sleep stacks in Jalis Same exact thing. Wonder. If that's the same costume makes us repurposes yet thought if they didn't slow it down decreases in the folds in the rubber costume might be more apparent or something. Cornell chases the gargoyles off in one of them. Crossing the streak is hit by a semi. It's almost like a he throws himself in front of a semi at it. Looked very avoidable. Did but the semi driver didn't stop either he's well. Yeah. Not another Goddamn Damn car while. You'RE GONNA. Say the. Same thing. But this is where we can actually get a good view because a good view. Cornell's. Upper Body. He wants to tend to the gargoyles but the doesn't want to touch it at the same time. Yeah. That's how you get Salmonella but that you can see the make up in the face and the is seemed kind of glow behind the makeup. That's pretty Goddamn call does this. Yeah. When he's like kind of tending to the almost dead when it does look cool. and. So many times where you like see the actors are teeth like underneath the custodian even that didn't look bad. So do you think they had those like back then they were just those completely blind contact lenses. That's why I got hit by the car is that what you're saying I mean What if they? What if that wasn't actually in the movie? Actor actually wandered out into the highway and got it. Well, you know. He would want us to keep the footage. I would say I. Dead I feel like in the seventies, there were a lot of like onset deaths that they're just like He knew the risks. That's right. So Now I can't Grayson her name's Grayson. Grayson Hall she looks like She's ready to party. She's been running this hotel slash brothel for years now, right? Being the only poker in the brothel I wouldn't go stuff I wouldn't call her a hooker. Hooker floozy. "That's the seventies but Jennifer salt cannot be bothered with a brawl no raw other listen tired of him. But again, it's the seventies. So they're like so tired that they can't get a hold of the police that night. So they just sleep it off and I guess they're going back to Willie's with the police. To find. Billions still smoldering body I. Do love this she sleeping by the way and he keeps playing that. Tape over and over. Yeah. She awakes from her slumber. Own Screaming. At tape of cannot be good for you. She did not reach the Rem sleep with that but he didn't say that it was noon. She was still asleep he's. Ready to go in it's noon you haven't gone to the cops yeah. Again he could. He could still be alive. Willie is just less important than anything Willie, basically sacrificed his life. So the guy could write a book. Yes with his. Daughter and. This scene with the the not even a gang. It's just a bunch of guys riding dirt bikes in the desert. Yeah. Why does the sheriff like immediately jumped out in his deputy has shotgun on yes. Oh, they are ready to kill them. Yes this is. So trigger-happy Maybe. There's back story on this. I'm sure they're roving gang of dirt bikers if you're in the seventies and your Anna town like this this. Phenomenon will occur naturally, there will be a cracker shariff and a young punk for him to chase It's like a requisite thing and all a small towns I think you know you think. Maybe, they just needed a fill some time. Because when they start chasing down Scott Glen and the other motorcyclists yeah. That eats up a few minutes. Oh my second dukes of Hazzard same basically, and it almost looks like they may have sped it up a little bit. Yeah. I was I noticed that too also that's the sheriff driving that giant car deputy still got his shotgun when he pulls out to chase. The bikers he. Hits Diana she had to move back. He almost clips cornell grabs her by the shoulder. Thank God because she for sure would have broken both of her legs taken out both kneecaps Yay. This chase is kind of fun. Yeah you know. Yeah. It goes on for quite some time and he probably would have shot at him before now. Exactly. But I think they're given a chance to setup Have you mentioned that Scott Glen. The Guy. In Blue Scott Glen, there's only a few lines from other of the so-called gang by one of them is a stuntman course. Yes. Who is also a gargoyles? Right Yes. I. Feel like a lot of people on this head like double roles. You Know Oh. Yeah. Jennifer. Can you please hold this boom mic out of frame? Yes. Clothes. I mean the sheriff's basically like we'll hell if you guys weren't around, we would have executed him already. You're saying they didn't do anything against the law. Different. Strokes for different folks I get when the the friend purposefully runs into Scotland and knocks. He does so I don't even know what they take him. They take him in for being vagrants for looting wearing too much denim. Yet. I think I read I. Think Scott Glen was in his thirties in this is this is first movie or as I. Really. Remember that old guy. But they play this audio tape back several times while somebody shaking the car off to the. Work the smoke machine. When you see the the Gargoyles I, love the steam or yes. Smoke coming out of the back of the car. Yes. It's kind of a red light. Beckett. But when the gargoyles comes up on top of the car, it can't it's reminiscent of like Halloween, right? Yeah. My Car and lost boys to that's that's kind of the same lighting. So the drive with him on the top and he's basically going we. Allow stuff there. And, Cornell Wilde is just jerking that car back and I. Love His fake driving in that sane and even Jennifer salt like lacquer head dips towards the. She's like really selling. Yes. Slapping. Her head against the window. Have some fun. So, here's another. Another gas station I don't they haven't had a real good track record with flammable stuff. So. Yeah maybe you should wait until somebody pumps the gas for you. Yes. So the gargoyles gets thrown from the hood of the car. And they just go off to a gas station and one of the only a few standing structures. In entire movie they just burnt down one of them, right? There in like death valley or something and. Still don't seem very concerned about what's going on no. No they play off what happened to the car. A can you fix this? It looks like somebody Claude, the hood of the this is deep gouges. The guy's like, yeah, it's midnight. Sure. I'll get the work on your. Hug Get your hoop. Up. Good. Hey, where where are you in the film? They got to the hotel. She's just the type of girl that would be kidnapped by GARGOYLES. It's so weird that in this I mean, she's like a grown woman in this movie not teenager, but it's just weird like hanging out with your dad and like bell bottoms and just like a tiny bikini, top? Yep. Weird erm I just it kind of bothered me to. Willy doesn't seem to mind. nope. You know I'm younger than your dad back. Take you back to the back and show you one of my bones? Hey, hey, don't go away. Pretty terrifying. You know. Which is, what makes it so cool when you will get to when they actually talk it's a weird juxtaposition. I just stumbled across a bit of Trivia here that I didn't realize. Here. Says, Bernie. "Like it had liquor under something. They're getting the car and he says Kalomo Dri will just about complete my collection of demons he's collecting Damon's he's got a demon collection yeah. I guess in the seventies you could have a demon collection. He's an author he wrote a book the basically talking about how demons were not real. Well, he's getting ready to find out that there are some demons and they're going to talk to him in a bizarre Li a formal manner through a kids like Synthesizer Old Senate? And maybe signed him up for the trial lamb Come you're waiting for it is that the only thing that you can think of that Bernie Casey in Bernie Casey is the main gargoyles and he I assume they picked him because he's like six foot four or something yeah, he is. He is six foot four. Let's just make this Gargle as big and imposing as we can. But he's like it is very strange thinking that he is under all that makeup like really Bernie Casey. You're right though I started thinking about it and I was trying to think of the thing that I would know him from. The. Most yeah and I think it's just in the mouth of madness and he's only in it for like five minutes until the crazy guy comes through the window nosy and it would have been revenge of the nerds all the way for me I will. Yeah, I'm sorry. Yes. Of course, have closed revenge of the NERDS. So Gargoyles Bill Norton directed it kind of looked at him his stuff for a little bit nothing too exciting except he's down as the writer for convoy. Yes. You knew I was going to bring this up. Yes I was hoping you were GonNa Bring it out I love that movie. he didn't direct it but he he wrote it and I had to look at convoy. We're going to look at it here in just a minute to. A lot more talk about Oh, about convoy maybe not necessarily okay by itself again, because this could easily turn into a convoy podcast and I've just slide right into. The lateral move. Yeah. Maybe not even maybe a kind of step down but still needs to be discussed. He also directed baby the secret of the lost legend my God. Yeah, I saw this at the theater. Wow Rag. I saw it on a endless loop on HBO in the. Couple of summers after it came out and I was like, this is crap. Crap and it's crap now. So he did a more American graffiti. I've actually seen that obviously didn't really go over you look at his credits and there's a lot TV? Men Anyway I wanted to bring up I just wanted to bring up convoy because we're going to circle back around to that here in just don't WanNa talk about Cisco.

"It's only a couple of letters off and it probably would have helped him because he doesn't seem well in this moving. Dow, I was just reading in the Trivia here just a little bit ago that. Woody Chambliss Uncle Willie he's two years younger than corn wildness. Wow. Because he looks like he could be a wildest father probably. Yes. His the dictionary definition of grizzled. So father daughter taken off to the desert to just kind of poke around the opening scene. What is he picking her up at the airport or something? Yeah. I. Guess she has like a personal jet. No. Maybe, we should just start from the very beginning because the all the stuff you know the narration of the beginning. Kind of explaining what gargoyles are I I, guess they're explaining what Gargoyles are. Gargoyles are fictional creatures. Well they were. A minute so you're saying that. was once the most. Of playing it right in the middle of it but anyway, that narration it does set you up. And it looks really cool. I. Mean I love these. There's nothing more like seventy s than this kind of introduction but he's saying basically that everybody knows we have gargoyles and it was just a matter of time before they started attacking that I listened to that right? Sure. Sure and who was it? That had the opening I I saw earlier. and. It was like is somebody I'm sure it somebody maybe it's John Larroquette again. That would be awesome. Got So. Lost already. So this aired on TV in like November, of Nineteen seventy-two. Halloween movie it wasn't I talked to todd about a friend of ours todd briefly about it because I remember watching it as a kid on TV and you know it came out a few years before I was born. So I was like, when would I have been in? Was Old enough to enjoy you know you know Kinda racking my brain trying. To think of these like 'cause I knew it had to be on like an old like creature feature late at night or or Sunday afternoon when they used to play like Godzilla movies and stuff and todd says, no, I, know exactly what I saw it was from I. saw it on the plenty scary movie on channel as that it was on ABC. So, go that and just listened to the opening music and stuff when I was a I was like Oh. Yeah that that's exactly where I heard or for I watched the first time awesome and remember being freaked out and at the same time just like loving it you know the only thing I really remember from my childhood from this film is the gargoyles being hit by what I thought was their car but noah was a semi I thought the exact same thing I thought they hit it but no, he's just like road kill. He's not paying attention to the now. Do they explain that why is he just out was? He'd going for a jog or something. Yeah. Yeah. That's what it was. Associates Vic Perrin was he the Vic Perrin?.

"Manila. May May. I. Might be talking like this for the rest of the pied gas. Nick Nolte you know there's a ton of distortion when the GARGOYLES speak yes. It's probably going to have to stop and talk about that for a while not what I remember them sounding like so much. I mean. Now that I know you know kind of like what type of technology they were using to give them their voices but I, did not remember them sounding like. How would you even I don't know how to describe it. It's almost like a sci fi it sounds like something from doctor who it's like somebody was speaking through r two D two's asshole. Yes exactly using R. Two D. Two as like a gravity bong or something in the were just like a talk. They kind of sound like doll lex a little bit if you really. Okay it's like, okay guys. We have this one effect that we can do and we're just GONNA. That's what we're going to stick with. That's it which seventy, two I mean. I don't think I realized how old this movie, right? This was the year I was born. I would like to think that I hold up better than this movie but like to. Light the thing that. I don't even know how we would go about scoring you on. We're going to have to at the very sophisticated test to see if. That so that's what we're. GonNa. Do. Where you and I are going to put a kind of test together. That will see if you or the nineteen seventy two TV movie gargoyles. Which of the two has aged better right. So the rubber suits they're wearing is. Very Similar to the skin I have on my body so I mean lathering A. Thick leathery kind of bunches up two points Yeah It almost doesn't have a lot I mean. Read it. To. ME. This is for my dvd after receiving word about mysterious skeleton unearthed in the Arizona Desert. A father and his daughter visit the man who has it and grabbed the skull as they escape shack, the Gargoyles have attacked. This is the most complicated. That was all. I guess that kind of explains it. Okay. So as they escape once they do. So they as well as the town are besieged by colony of gargoyles living in some nearby caverns, the town that's a loose I think is the town I mean there are four things in this town. willies frigging little Curio shop alkyl Willett Museum. Oh. God. I think it's funny that guy that plays Willie Woody Chambliss. Yeah. His name is woody in like the character name is woody in like a bunch of these. You know because he was an amount of like westerns. Nets Willie for this. I quite she just call him uncle woody. I don't know how would have caused so much confused their source material is named Willy and they just didn't want is such a beloved character that they didn't want to change..

Notre Dame Fire; Pilgrim Trails

"Let's start today's show remembering the impact of the fire. That damaged Notre Dame cathedral in Paris one year ago with thirteen million visitors a year. The medieval masterpiece had attracting more visitors than Saint Peter's Basilica Elaine Sciolino correspondent in Paris since two thousand and two and she describes how the river that surrounds Notre Dom came to the rescue in her book. The Sam the river that made Paris Elaine. Thanks for joining us. Where were you and I know how much you love Paris? What was it like when you heard about the fire at the Notre Dame on April fifteen twenty nineteen? I live in Paris Rick and I happened to have been in New York at the time and I was in an office building and suddenly looked at a TV screen and there was CNN with the Notre. Dom Inflames I mean my city by cathedral and I was so my first questions were did anyone die and was it terrorism and once it was just established that it was a terrible accident and no one died. I was relieved because I was confident. Even at that very moment that it would be rebuilt. Maybe different but it would survive. It had to yeah now you were probably celebrating the fact that you've got this wonderful book. The send the river that made Paris just coming out in actuality in a Lotta ways. It was the send that enabled the firefighters to save the Cathedral. Well I got a phone call from my husband who was watching all of this on French TV in Paris and he said Lane. You're not gonNA believe this but I'm watching television and there is a boat that seems to be pumping water up to the firefighters on the land into the Cathedral. And I knew at that moment I had to write another chapter about the Senate and its role in helping to put out the fire at Notre Dumb. Thank God they had access to all that water when you think of the structure of a Gothic Cathedral. A lot of people don't realize it but there's huge oak beams there's a whole structure between the ceiling and the roof and it's the network of Oak Beams. The roof would be a lead covered roof. Eight hundred years old. I've seen in museums gargoyles with molten lead spewing out their mouth you know cooling and freezing their when you've had a fire like this. I mean it's just a nightmare when I've got the cathedral bursts into flames. I agree one hundred percent with you. It was an absolute nightmare and it affected people in very strange ways being people who had no real religious connection with Notre Dom we're weeping in the streets and people around the world were mourning the fact that this edifice that too many represents the heart and soul of Paris was on the verge of destruction. No I understand that the nineteenth century spire which in your chapter you you say has five hundred tons of Oak. Two hundred and fifty tons of lead fell three hundred feet crashing to the ground. It's amazing that the entire church didn't collapse A lot of people don't realize that stone gets compromised in heat and giant stone. Buildings can fall down because of a fire with the firefighters who belonged to the French military. They're not part of the city of Paris Force went into action as if it was a military operation and the commander of the firefighters sent some of his team into the burning north tower risking their lives to try to cool down that tower. Which we still don't know one year later. Is it completely intact or does it need to be supported in some way? Now that must have been quite a dramatic decision because you can stand back and make sure nobody is endangers way and then the tower would have collapsed or you can send your firefighters in risking a situation like on nine eleven when the trade towers collapsed and all the firefighters inside would perish again. Thank goodness five. Hundred firefighters participated. They took the bold move they rushed in. They called the church and they say the north tower will general galet. Who is the commander of the firefighters spent time in Afghanistan and he had studied also the nine eleven tragedy in the United States? But he had to go to the president of France to get permission to send his firefighters in. Anybody told the president is if we don't do this. We're half an hour away from Notre Dom collapsing. That is amazing. You know we can more in the church. We can love the church but as hard get into the heart in the mind of Parisians. What does it mean to Paris? I mean it just seems like of course. You've got the zero point in front right. Everything is majored in France from the Notre Dame. Its place where they're kings have been coronated through the centuries in so many ways it's the cultural heart of the city even back before the advent of Christianity there was a temple. Can You Peter Right there? Can you talk a little bit about the Notre Dame as that heart and soul of the Great City of Paris? Notre Dame is on the field unless he tae which was where Paris was created. It's the very origin of Paris. Need sits there as not only a beautiful historical monument to museum but it sits there as the absolute essence of Paris So for French Catholics. It's a place of worship but for the rest of the French nation. It's really the origin of their capital city.

The Ferocity of the Gargoyle

"Morning sun signaled sold the end for those that were condemned the jailer lined up the prisoners checking that their chains were secure before the Bishop. This ship arrived. It had rained the night before the stone gargoyles protruding from the nearby. Church dripped black water from its gaping mouth a grotesque sight but for these prisoners it was also a symbol of hope of potential Dole Salvation. The bishop arrived and went inside the church to pray while the executioner insured that the chopping block was secure for the prisoners side. The dark bloodstains left by the countless men who had lost their heads over that wooden stump. The bishop emerged from the Church Bible in hand. He moved along the men he offered each of them their last rites and the chance to confess their sins before their time on this earth head ended the bishops stopped at the last prisoner owner. He stood taller than the others and his eyes sparkled. With a strange fire he had not yet been broken by the stagnant purgatory of imprisonment. That one the bishop said drawing a finger over the man's forehead without a word word. The guards moved and released the man they gave him fresh clothes. Sturdy boots a bag of supplies and coin and sent sent him on his way. The released prisoner thanked the bishop for his kindness and swore that he would earn his salvation. As as the exonerate made his way out of the village he stopped once more to consider the gargoyles mounted over the church. It was because of that Garg Oil. And it's kind that he had been offered his freedom he would never forget it.

"TV and they're still finding their way and the the assault on the castle. The humor bits as the gargoyles complete fish out of water. You know It's it's a lot of fun for me. Yeah I'm willing to buy. I mean I think it establishes that he's kind of ridiculously Machiavellian And that probably this as we as we discover later this whole fight was staged by him. but I am willing to buy it that it's equal part. He's he has overly complicated evil plans. And he wants to test the gargoyles slash his own amusement to be part of the the basically the fight because he he wants to he wants to shoot a laser gun at some people it fits very well with Santos liabilities according to how Owen is informed him that shooting his own employees as Safer shooting strangers so again New York City in the early nineties so maybe dig the giant discs I really liked the giant disks or optical. Do so he stopped news opt optical discs a few years before that were like looked like giant floppies. And I think that's what they're trying to really work find that those were. We're actually magic talisman. Yeah I love. How condescending is being really like helpful? Well the debriefing. Where he's like? I need you guys to go on my commando rays and they're like. Wow you have a screen. That shows big dude. Maybe maybe these are not the guys you need to like. Go the laboratory. How are they going to find a disk? I do love Jonathan frakes delivery on your naievety is refreshing. So slimy slimy and get like it's the worst parts of Reicher right. It's the worst parts of will reicher cross Tony Stark. It is true when you have magic though and you can in you know in your in a world of magic it's all. The machinations of things are machines and screens are not quite as amazing to you probably have seen things in mirrors and and screaming ponds and things already moving tapestry so we have lisa investigate this whole bizarre firefight and Owen with Zan. Cessna's assistant tries to get rid of her but she's still snooping around. Yeah Owen is a win is a person who has not given a lot of screen time in this episode but is certainly one of my favorite characters for reasons that become later on. He's delightful and he's also just yes the delivery and his persona is fantastic. Yeah the younger. The youngest snarky Alford. You could ever imagine yes an just such a straight man such straight and very very good. Use your revelations just hilarious delirious so we have our first encounter between a Lisa and Goliath where Goliath as Tony mentioned. Crushes lease gun. She stumbled off the building and he saves her and then they climb back up and they seem to start to establish a reporter. She explains he's a detective. And there's you know basically a things that she's investigating. She investigates when when things are don't fit together and we get a nice line about her sing a good detective. Trust no one. And that's one thing we have in common goliaths. Fear of being betrayed again runs very strongly through this entire episode and that is again another a nice note of complexity I think for these characters even though we have Santos he doesn't entirely trust Santos He doesn't entirely trust Lisa at the beginning. Either and we see just how badly affected by the events of the of Scotland. So rich is the time line was yesterday right. So right and yet he he. He throws that questioning completely away. When Dimona comes back in two of life layer? which almost makes is that betrayal and that interaction even more intense? Because you've seen him okay. Yeah he's got his other buddy a Buddy gargoyles and here's someone that saved his life and Yada Yada but still questioning and then oh his angel of the night comes back and all is forgiven and and that just stab in the heartened. It's it's so painful. The PATHOS Pathos yes. Speaking of PATHOS. this this Tehran of shows has some great subtle dialogue here and there like when a Lisa asks Goliath. There's more than one of you and he says barely uh-huh yeah in that Nice growl to So we have Santos giving the briefing about these stolen discs by cyber -biotics. And how he's going to send him out to recover them. We also get the idea. Now that he is something else is going on where he tells the shadowy figure that everything is going according to plan subtle animation is. It's hard to do because you have that moment of like especially when you're watching his back to back you're like well clearly d'amato right like shape of her and everything in the shadows but yeah not not so much that we get the discussion say airships giant sky ships. You know you'd think after what the avengers The doctor who ended time name anytime the the the the sound of drums What's The sky captain and the world of tomorrow? You know these giant airships these giant propeller-powered propeller-powered airships. They always go down. They always craft live out their ship. Back you right. You're right we get a discussion with Goliath Lisa about names. This is where Hudson gets his name and a Lisa and Glasgow sightseeing threat. City league well Hudson discovers television. We get our aforementioned mugging scene with the Yuppies who I believe. Show up in the background in a few more episodes as well Komo one of them. That was something else that they tended to bring these minor characters. Yes yes we. There's only like seven people in New York City Eh Marco who is clearly voiced by Marina. Serious as well which I enjoy goliath beats up thugs and Elisa's very happy. The best thing that could happen to the city that's right because the city cannot be policed by police. Officers can only by Mrs Mugabe everything. Vigilante Justice I don't think it would. I'll be turtles or Batman. This is what the city needs and then it was rough in the nineteen nineties man and then our thugs show up our commandos. Show up and Trink to chew Goliath full of some sort of sedative or something. The goliath and Lisa flee the boys who are out trying to sightsee and have found a motorcycle things and then blown it up lots of stuff also blows up surly. That character will never return. This universe has a lot of extra oxygen in the air. I think on Central Park blow up that thing blowing up blowing up in the tower that we're just we just gas cans everywhere in the nineties. And along the way we get the very distinct personalities for the for for the boys we find out pretty clearly that Lexington is going to become donatello going to become the tech. The Tech Person Broadway is at least Orlando because the jolly hedonistic eating stuff type and Brooklyn is figure out little later on that. He's kind of Goliath in training. But he's not there yet. Yeah he's a he's a little bit more than the Goliath is little Mo cool oh but crude reference. We get a funny funny scene where they try to when they realized they can't get back to the tower easily. Try to the cab which man as Lisa and glide fleeing they discover that glide has a radio tracker with him on him with a logo on it at least puts it on a dog the logo. I love the logo. What happened to that dog? We never see that dog again. That's what happened to. The dog is still following. We have fun so as we mentioned up top the at least discovers that despite the fact that Goliath has tried to hide this whole stone stone sleep thing for him that like she discovers it when they can't make it back before dawn and he explains briefly before he turns stone that he's totally vulnerable during day so she tries to lead the commandos away and we get a really great action sequence as she takes them out she goes to the boathouse. The Boat House blows up. She guy in with a jacket like this rowboats also by the way but hey that's okay gasoline. I don't remember the waterfall and the sheer cliff in central park. Ah I must exist. I'm going to leave it does it does not exist. I'm sure there's some of it is also a park that is because it's nineteen ninety-four MT at broad daylight as dangerous. No one dared say in that part. I wondered about that in the scene where she runs through the cafe. But it's also yeah dawn because he's just turned to stone so it's probably a little it's Kinda like Morningside Park. Yeah they called any of the mercenary. Our Dan the first jogger when she finally circles back to Goliath anyone who lived in New York City in the late eighties. If I say it's more like Morningside Park is laughing at home now or in the car. Yeah the Nice bit with Jogger. WHO's like I have run through this for five years thirsting that statue which is funny and then they he just keeps going though visit because there's a New Yorker? I just missed it. Neural Lisa stays with Goliath all day. which finally basically earns her some trust strikes? She's he's protected him and that that is a bond right. That's sort of establishes a bond that we don't have with Santos even though Santos is the one who is brought them all back upon upon returning we get the clan. Gets all of their names my notes. Here's what we know. They can't read so I guess they're just all things they overheard and clearly the over a lot of things they they had a very busy day right. So we've got Lexington Broadway Brooklyn and Bronx. I mean. Look they're speaking modern English so we have some accommodation the nation to make it's fair true. Magic Garbo's have very flexible brains as because of their origins that are magic you ever sold translated. Santos wants to Goliath. And we get the reveal of Dimona and we get our reunion a union between the two lovebirds. Dimona tells a story about basically going after Goliath and then having when she realized they've turned stone having the biggest cast the spell again Santos Tos says that he acquired her first. This is also some questionable but interesting like this is another thing I like about the show is layered narratives right like we're already suspicious because of the way this is presented were suspicious of these characters and a lot of this stuff will end up being things that turn out to be inaccurate not inaccurate but like there dissembling right which is another fascinating thing that we don't get a lot. I feel like in this area of this year. Well in in my my memory I always knew Santos was the bad guy like I mean. He's got a ponytail. He's gotta go he wears. I mean do you need to see his his tax returns to those people and so in the first episodes with he's you know nice and he'd saved them and all of the stuff I was was just like did I completely forget being stern. I was very very confused. And so when it all turns okay in my memory. Isn't that bad. We get them all sent on their missions to all these various sites which includes some some fun confrontations we get some character development moments as we realized that Dimona is pretty callous about human lives and Goliath is still not quite ready despite having been betrayed by humans to sort of categorically dismissed all humans every guard every facility is incapable of shooting. Anybody that no one ever gets it right any of the actually the bulletin or whatever. I don't think so any point I don't think so stormtrooper some you know as a cartoon but it's also still like there's a lot of shoot out. There are a lot of guns in these sequences but yeah not a lot of people actually getting violently hurt. Yes we get the the the kids go to this tower and get you know. Ama- sensually ambushed by a bunch of guards but they managed to get their way out. We get Hudson. Who's the Saviola time? Rookie tricks his way in By essentially like giving himself up and then having brock's come in and save him Dimona destroys the airship despite Goliath wanting to save people. She's dragged him out at least a cease go out and do WANNA leaving the crash airship and she sort of her suspicions are raised. Dimona tries to convince Goliath that humanity is basically their enemy and Santos is the only one they can trust. He is not quite buying it. And this is when the cracks in this relationship. Start to show She goliath go. See a Lisa. Who reveals that? The logo that was on the radio tracker is a company that belong. Santos maybe just don't make your logo so prominent prominent. Whatever dan branding matters? And why..

"The father of Italian English descent says Wikipedia. But no that was. I feel like that's unusual. I was surprised. Like Oh my God. She actually look something like is something like the character that was we are doing the voice aspect I'm guessing they probably modeled some of the character on the actress. Just given even how close those two things are not be surprised if that was the case there Sorry go ahead I was just gonNa say they modeled Keith. David serving they modeled Goliath off of Keith David to obviously under the wings and the horns in everything I do. Do you WanNa talk about some of the characters. But I'm not sure if we go through briefly go through the plot or should we just assess more broadly. How do you guys feel particular preference now? Now let's let's you abroad so so yeah so as we already sort of talked about. What's interesting about this show is that we start off very brief? We have this teaser. Caesar in the present day and then we jump back to Scotland and the premise is set up that we have this castle it is defended by the gargoyles their stone during the day. But they come alive at night so when these invading invaders like you show up and attack you know. Everybody thinks the leaders crazy. Because he's attacking you know when the when these supposedly mythological creatures are gonNA come to life. He doesn't believe it. Of course they turn out to be real and so we end up with this whole fight scene where the gargoyles really you know. Throw a boulder wait and drive people off but what they get interesting about this is we. We find that. Of course the Gargoyles are not accepted by the society the particularly really the the sort of high echelons side. We have a princess who really looks down on them. We have the Magus adviser who is also not a big fan and pretty much. What's their only ally and defenders the captain of the guard the unnamed? I always is interesting. Unnamed captain of the Guard and so we have have this sort of betrayal plot. Right where the GARGOYLES are. We have this gargoyles species where they are treated poorly and the We have somebody betraying the castle in the princess and essentially like convincing the The person who attacked to basically try their luck again at daylight. There's a whole thing with a ruse or Goliath is lured away and we find out more later about the whole sort of like sequence events therre which ends up being again fairly complex because of the the betrayer of course turns out to be the captain who is the only trust but the the fact that only a Goliath and Hudson. I mean he's the names just to be convenient was leave. The castle means that everybody else is left undefended and that we then have you know the the invaders come and essentially smash all of the gargoyles except for three young heroes. Who are hiding out in the rookie? With all the eggs and the and the dog and the dog. It's very confusing. Yeah why is the dog. A gargoyles dog be question. This magic UH rabid gargoyles. Good boy yes it just. It raises some concerning questions of parentage. And you know it's a whole Pluto goofy goofy issue to maybe. He's not a dog maybe he's just well he's he's very soft spoken. So Hi. This is Shannon made the comparison to Babylon five earlier. Another point of comparison. Here is that the Creator and Joe in showrunner of Gargoyles Greg Weisman was also fairly active online and he would painstakingly explained to you online that that that Bronx is a or goal beast not a Garg oil and there's a taxonomy here so the novelization so we have a another as the invader. Hey Con when captures the princess and we end up with this slightly awkward sort of misunderstanding. Where The Magus believes that the The princess has been killed by. Hey Con because the gargoyles showed up and so he essentially casts dispel on the younger gargoyles. Hudson that freezes them into stone even during the night Goliath goes after an saves the princess but loses his chance at revenge John. Hey Khan and is surprised to find. The captain is the person who betrayed the castle and so of course when he returns you know he he doesn't know what has happened to his friends. The MAGA's explains he's put a sort curse on them That they sleep for a thousand years or sleep until the castle was raised above the clouds and that he can't undo the spell because the pages been burned in his thome and so this is not a very good does a very good memory. Seem kind of like a poser. If I learned anything from as you say that spelled backwards and so what Goliath request that he also be put sleep their return to the castle and and that is when we jump forward and a thousand years to our quote Unquote Present Day or at least twenty five years ago and we are introduced to the very interesting character of David. Santos who I want to say is personally. I think one of my favorite characters on this entire first of all Jonathan frakes we all vandross is basically like he's like he's. He's Jerky Tony Stark. which is which is which the redundant yeah let me slightly more able to make Santos I think compelling is the fact that he is he existed he's a villain and yet he is not necessarily always villainous like he's got he's in that weird gray area and that's what I do about him as a character is that he he is at various times? Ally like a grudging ally verses actual antagonised in this case we learned that he is like heard the legend of the gargoyles. He has moved the entire castle. Lock Stock Barrel Rick Brick by brick and rebuilt it on top of his skyscraper in New New York. 'cause that's a totally the amount of effort they put into depicting how the thing was disassembled though. That was very impressive. Like there's numbers on things that are packing it up there flying away. I'm like this is a lot of effort to show. We packed up the castle and move Dave's interesting choice. Yeah it's an interesting choice into the the mega spell until the castle rises above the clouds. That's very very specific. Metaphor there It's very it must. It must rhyme in the metric language or something like every spell has to have like a clause they they've invented magic and the lawyers got got to it so it's like every every spell has to have an exit exit rate so that it Kinda leave you've ever signed the contract says in perpetuity till the end of the universe. You know that that just doesn't works. I signed contracts say that the publication owns the rights. This until my words rise above the clouds. Yeah worked very well. Chipping makes a lot of sense. If if you just consider a basic legal theory please when pigs fly right last question. Do they not consider fog clouds votes. Because I you know. Scotland fairly overcast and fog rolls in and one could argue but obviously they did not so. I wonder if it's a belief system as well. Maybe the fog came in during the day. Gargoyles was an amazing show on the Disney afternoon. That only ran and for one episode turned to the stone at the end and that was it so in our in our in present day. The gargoyles are awakened. I do love the the design of the castle on the skyscraper although it makes virtually we know senator still incredibly distinctive and it's got a lot of character we were trying to figure out where Zana's data's skyscraper fits in the New York skyline. Yeah because they do show. They show the Chrysler building a lot. They showed the empire state building. I think basically wants and so my my my my viewing partners working theory is that it's the the metlife building which in the movies is also what they made the the avengers tower prime real estate. You Really Jerky Tony Stark. Oh that's great love it. I'm here to help. I hope it's called. The eerie built the Eerie area building. Right it is called the area I think they do refer to it at some point he also I love the fact again. Nineteen Ninety S. Some strange thing I mean not quite accurate. There's like one board. Sleepy security guard guarding the elevator. Any place in the building. Yeah yeah well you know. He's very trusting. David it was it was the ninety S. There's one security guard and there's four mercenaries laser guns everywhere. You Go. Yeah Yeah it was. It was a great economy. What can we say okay interesting? We get a little bit backstory. When the guerrillas wake wake-up Santos introduces them tells them what's going on? We do. Learn the mega throwdown. The story in the xanthos has the grim Warr. We also get get they actually get asked about the the ask about the eggs in the rookery which he says are gone and the last gargoyles sort of. We'll just like asterisk. The heck out of that one but I love those down. That's what I'm saying. Look down his threes lying. Oh yes yeah I mean yeah that is also true And then we get this interesting episode where these commandos show up and basically jump in and appear to run around and steal something from Santos and and then flee again and the gargoyles sort of fight them off and Santos thanks them but we get this whole weird. That's the beginning of the first episode where we have this whole firefight and stuff like falling off the building chunks of stony etc and so we have at least. That's what draws our detective. Lisa Maza Aisa in as she comes to investigate what could leave clause in solid stone. The fight scenes are a little long for my liking. They have some nice moments in it. I I think my favorite one in here is when a evil commando throws a grenade at Lexington like tosses it aside because he doesn't know what a grenade is But Yeah at times. It's like I get it pumped punch exposing explosion. I'm trying to try to sort of give money. Honey shot to each character juggling all the different characters. I think that's part of what drove that. Yeah even ended up. We're GONNA walk. I'm never gonNA walk around the Eerie building though because man they're always like bricks and all kinds of stuff falling down like it must be like a death zone paid off a wad code inspectors on. Yeah it's it's a pretty elaborate scam That is very shaggy scam. Zana's running running in this in this story And I think that towards the end this is it's sort of where everything sort of falls apart but it's it's kids action adventure..

Fire in the heart of France

"We're looking at the five that so nearly destroyed the cathedral of Notre Dame in Paris and implications for world heritage. And for France. Joining me in the studio is the F FTC architectures correspondent, Edwin Heskitt and from Paris across Banovic demands, Victor it's a couple of days since the shock. It's still standing essentially unaltered. I'm how rave is the damage. Well, I think now the the fire is being put out the damage is very very severe to the roof, but it was mainly to the wooden roof and that spot that was on top of that roof, which plunged through the volt of the cathedral into the middle of the cathedral. But the damage to the treasures and artworks inside it's surprisingly minor. It seems in most cases. So I think given the extent of the fire, and that's a horrendous blaze that we saw on that Monday night really things are better than people might have expected. Nevertheless, I mean, there is sort of question about the stability of certain parts of the stonework. Called the stone towers, the bell ties a largely intact. And of course, rebuilding the roof will itself be a very very major project and even the amazing stained glass window survived. Apparently. Yes, not all of them. I mean, you can see that some of the smaller windows, especially high up clearly broken shattered on the disappeared. But the great rose windows for which no pa- them is famous. I still there. There was sort of three major rose windows on the west and the north and the south, and they still seemed to be entitled whether almost certainly smoke damaged, but they're not broken and people are rushing forward to volunteer money to rebuild it. We seem to be up to two billion euros and a few days. That's right. Even when the father was still raging the Pino family offered one hundred million euros, and since then the promises have been rolling in lousy from tycoons big companies in France. But also some foreign companies apple that it would donate some money, and then also sort of French government institutions that does not as public subscription that's going to take place in France. And. People will get tax breaks for donating small amounts of money. So yes, very large sum of money has already been promised. I think we're up to about eight hundred million years at the moment. Now, president mackerel has already said that the whole thing will be rebuilt, but Edwin new wrote in the paper that restoration will take more than just money. It requires a meticulous forensic examination and deep thought about what exactly is to be restored. What do you mean by them? Well, I think there were two questions first there's the situation as it is. I mean, suddenly this becomes a kind of mix of a crime scene and the disaster area. But it's not like an earthquake where you can just bring a bulldozer shovel everything up. Everything has to be mapped out for Ensley because every piece of stonework every piece of gloss is a valuable antique, it might be something hand-carved from thirteen hundred. So the first very long very meticulous arduous exercise is just going through all the damaged stuff on the flaws as collapsed in from the roof woods, the timbers the bits of glass metal the gargoyles. Collapsed in and cataloging all that that's an incredible amount of work before we even get to start reconstruct. And then of course, there's the second issue, which is what exactly it is. You're going to reconstruct isn't a meticulous copy of the church exactly as it was the moment before the fiber account, or do you take it back to state in around nine thousand nine hundred or in eighteen hundred do you strip out some of the worst of the Victorian nineteenth century excessive restorations in additions? What are you building? What is not your damn? You know, what does the base and the French have a record of actually adding modern bits two ancient buildings. I'm thinking of the famous gloss permit in the middle of the Louvre. Do you think they'll take similar opportunity to do something modern with not damore as it to sacred to do that kind of thing with either leave? They just announced before we came on air that there will be a global call for designs for new spa. The spy that fell in so dramatically was actually nineteenth century addition. And it looks like there's going to be a contemporary replacement for that. And. Mean restoration as well as being very difficult technical task. And the task of reimagined nation seems to be a very dangerous thing in itself because actually as far as we can see this fire was set off by restoration efforts. And that's not an isolated incident as it absolutely isn't. I mean here we had the Glasgow school of art which burned down twice during restoration projects. Almost unbelievably. But we'll wait. There have been examples of this happening. And it's a very dangerous and very delicate moment in the life of a building. Because everything is exposed there naked flames there the conditions of building sign, which are always unpredictable. So you're right restoration is necessary. So the building doesn't fall down and remain safe. But it's also arguably the most vulnerable moment the buildings life when it's going to strip naked. And I don't want to turn the focus away from Paris too much. But I'm in here in Britain, people are very worried about the restoration the palace and Westminster including the virus. Yeah. That's right. And the amazing even though that's only one hundred fifty years old one hundred forty as as on by fire. Wasn't it? It was it was originally. But it's a far more complex. Building the church effective is a bond. That's one big space, but parliament is a warrant of rooms and sellers, and it's very heavily used in a way that the church is one big space used by congregation and tourists, but it's much more simple. Use in a way, so Victor turning back to France. I mean, what's the current mood in Paris? Because on the night, it seemed like an almost incredible blow was going to happen to this most celebrated of cities is it now a kind of relief or shock. I think people are already starting to move on to sort of daily politics after twenty four hour break that was declared by the main political parties to grieve as it were not them. I think you know, there's also a financial impact on the city because I think it's the most visited tourist site in Europe and possibly the world something like twelve million people year, go to see no predom-. So obviously, there will be an impact on tourism in the city and people are concerned about that. But yeah, people have already slowly begun to move on. And you've got some of the anti-government protest is Alasia in protest is. Complaining that these big French companies and tycoons able to four large sums of money overnight for not done, which they're not able to do to help the poor. You know, it's very return. If you like, no, more, French politics, but just on the business of restoration. I mean, I think the French have quite a good record of interesting restorations and not necessarily wanting to be totally conservative and just put back. What was already there? I was talking to Jack Lang yesterday. The former culture minister who was one of the people in charge on the fronts from Mitterrand of that Louvre restoration which did have an ineffective short time. I think within five years like the proposed rebuilding of Notre dumb, and he was sort of raising the question that. Yeah. You could use new materials, even if you recreated the spa as that. We were saying it's the nineteenth century structure, you could recreate it, but it wouldn't have to necessarily be in the same materials. So I think you could have a situation where you might not have Aspira tool. You might have something else. You know? I'm quite impressed by the the people are not necessarily talking about totally copying. What was that the main pieces that were lost were? Actually wouldn't beams that they call the forest up in the roof, the huge number of very large oak beams that we used to hold up this leadin roof, and you know, I imagine they'll be looking for some imaginative solutions to replace that. And on the politics of it. I mean, these kinds of vents can take on. I'm fortunate simple IQ import and president Macron was already trying to recover from the relation thing. Had a big speech. Shut your for the very night that as it turned out not dumb. Almost burned down. Do we get have a sense of how this is playing for the president to be hard to say but early to say, you know, he immediately sort of caught the popular mood. I mean, he had cancel counselor speech with any half an hour to go on and brew house to the speech, apparently, the speech was actually prerecorded. So he didn't make that speech. It didn't make those announcements any very much focused on the issue of no predom-, and how to save it. And so on which I'm sure at the time was absolutely the right thing to do both from personal point of view, ethical bundle view from a political point of view. And I think everyone. Appreciated that the questions, you know, how long that will lost. And as I said already a day or so later couple of days later, we've got people sort of wanting to move on and get onto day-to-day politics, and attacking the rich and attacking the government and so on. So I think the moment the effect is pretty much neutral for Matt grant, you know, he did what any president would. I think have done which is to not continue with his normal business politics for a short time. He's getting to resume that probably next week. And you know, that's what people would want him to do. But I I think they would have been surprised if he had done anything else. The one thing where the government and micro might benefit is that this might not be the moment for the Asia. No, all the sort of Cassar the records who appear with them on these much is to lay waste to central Paris, which they threatened to do this coming Saturday. And this might be considered. You know, I think by the people who Paris as a particularly provocative and unpleasant thing to do when the symbol of French culture and religion has just been laid waste by fire. And then let's send by thinking about that. I mean victims said that Notre Dame was possibly the most visited tourist site in the world. I suddenly think Paris is said to be the most visited city in the world. I mean, I guess Paris's a number of symbols the Eiffel tower and so on, but this for it share ancient nece must be almost unique nurses in French. But in European culture, I think so because there isn't an equivalent over here in London, for instance. Because here we have the split between some Paul's and Westminster and Canterbury cathedrals world as the kind of the head of the church the mothership. So it embodies all of these things. So there's a sense that this building is France, we have nothing really to compare that to there's no building of similar significance. Maybe the pulse of Westminster that you mentioned. And then there's the residual kind of animosity towards politicians that goes with that. Which isn't there according to them and architecturally is it fair to say that it's unique because I guess FRANZ has these grand cathedrals as well on things of shots were ruling and so on, but I suppose it's the combination of its ancient is and it's. Centrality to Paris. I think necessarily what its position on the diversity in that site with the public square in front of it makes it it is century FRANZ. It's the place from which distances are measured. It's very consciously the heart it's going to physical and metaphysical heart of the country. So yes, absolutely. Is there?
