'Grave of the Fireflies' Brings the Firebombing of Kobe to Life

"When we sat down to watch this, I told my daughters, you have to see the very first line. You can not miss the very first thing that is spoken because I don't know about your house. I don't know about it in our listeners house, but when we put on a movie oftentimes, people are up, still getting popcorn or still getting a drink or just wandering around or on their phones or something, and because a lot of movies, to be honest with you, they take a while to really get going, but not this one grabs you right off the bat and the very first line is this. September 21st, 1945. That was the night I died. And you just kind of like, oh, okay, well that takes away the suspense of what's going to happen in the end. That say to the teenage boy who's speaking. And so in part one, we are taken into a subway, and it's after the war. On that day, shortly after the end of World War II, a young boy sits against a pillar at Sano Mia station and he's dying of starvation. People walk by expressing disgust about him and calling him a trap. Later that night, after he dies, janitor removes his body and digs through his possessions, finding nothing, but a candy tin containing ashes and a few fragments of bone, which he throws away into a nearby field. From the tin, springs the spirit of the young boy, followed by his little sister, along with the cloud of fireflies. The spirit of the young boy whose name is saita begins to tell the story of how he and his sister sets go fared in the wake of the firebombings of Kobe during the war. So what do you think, what were your thoughts about that opening part, Sean? I mean, it is very bleak. Yeah. This is not a particularly uplifting movie. No, but this is also a film from a different culture. Right. And there's different perspective on there's a different perspective on life and perception and on death. And on the afterlife. And so at the same time, we have, there's plenty of thumbs out there, you know, go watch sunset boulevard, there's plenty of American films about a character who's narrating what happened to them before they died. So this is not unique to Japan. But it is certainly it is a very realistic portrayal and depiction. The train station is a horrifying thing. Right. And we'll talk about this later. But yes, this certainly gets you and says, hey, this is something that really happened. And this is something that occurred. And then we start to go into the fantasy, but the reality is right there in front of you. At the beginning.

How has the COVID-19 pandemic changed after two years?

"Tomorrow marks two years since the spread of Kobe nineteen cases was declared a pandemic and health experts say they've learned many things since then two years after the pandemic began questions still remain about the corona virus including its origin and long term effects but health officials know a lot more about how to keep open nineteen under control and allow for normal life to resume now safe effective vaccines are readily available in most parts of the world and there are treatments for those with severe symptoms antiviral drugs often combined with anti inflammatories like steroids and even manufactured antibodies to attack the virus and researchers have come to understand the virus mainly spreads through the air so what being down surfaces became less of an issue while mask wearing and good ventilation still remain the best preventive strategies I'm Jackie Quinn

"g. n. kobe" Discussed on The Crossover NBA Show with Chris Mannix

"What up? It's the crossover pod, Friday edition. We are coming up on a very sad anniversary. This Wednesday January 26th will mark two years since the helicopter crash that killed Kobe Bryant. His daughter Gigi and 7 others, I wanted to remember and celebrate Kobe's life in some way on this podcast that felt appropriate and I can think of no better way than to bring on my guest today, Mike sesky, who is the author of a new book about Kobe's life, but especially Kobe's formative teenage years and Mike's book takes us there in a way that I don't think any other book has to date and there have been, of course, a lot of books about Kobe Bryant. The book's called the rise, Kobe Bryant, and the pursuit of immortality, it takes us into Kobe's upbringing in Italy, his move with his family to lower Marion township, Pennsylvania, when he was 13 and throughout his entire high school years, I can't recommend it highly enough. There are quotes from Kobe in this book that we've never seen or heard until now because they were recorded back in 1996 97, Kobe's rookie year and never saw the light of day until now. The why and the how of that is fascinating. The book explains it and Mike steel ski will explain it during our chat. If you've been listening to me for a while, you know, I open every podcast and have an opening all of my podcasts since before this one with some version of what up and that's because of Kobe. If you heard me over the years on Zack Lowe's podcast, you know he greets me every time with what up Beck because as Zach recalled back when I first started going on a show, he recalls a moment during the 2011 NBA lockout, a player meeting in midtown Manhattan at a hotel, dozens of players are filtering through the lobby of the Sheraton hotel and Kobe strolls through at one point and sunglasses on looking coolest can be and as he passes by the gathered media contingent waiting for them. He sees me and says simply what up Beck? I didn't recall that moment, but Zach loved it, kind of mentally filed it away, introduced to me one day with it on his pod and it sort of stuck ever since. And so when I started my own podcast in 2017, I decided to incorporate it myself a little subtle homage to Kobe. I covered Kobe up close for 7 years from 1997 to 2004, got to know him. As well as a reporter can, given the professional limitations and the nature of the job. And I still learned so, so much from Mike seals, he's new book about those formative years of Kobe's life. His teenage years really enjoyed the book really enjoyed the chat with Mike. I think you will as well. Okay, my conversation with Mike sesky is coming up next. So.

"You know it can just happen right but I was thinking about the fact that which is not in control I think a lot of times you eagle kicks in a situation like that is all I got to get control of it to get drugs to control control that'd I'd like that's all that situation shows you you're never truly in control yeah I did a lot I watched it on the way down to DC a when she said you know god took G. G. N. Kobe away because she knew that you could be on a circuit out Colby I started bawling yeah my dermatologist Dr some of the documents because they knew he was having a conversation when it first happened she said the same thing he was like you know their spirits have always been like this bridge will link you know long before they got here knows their spiritual healing gone after their physical bodies are gone she said the same thing like you like they both had to go together because they did their spirits are so intertwined connected one one couldn't live without those on this on this planet now isn't he H. yeah yeah man it is it is showing that you're just not in control you just never right in control and I think if I think that will cause a lot of anxiety right yeah because we just always try to control the future they're trying to control certain outcomes and you just can't nothing could be controlled got enjoyed a moment that's right yeah well what we'll give you more in and give you some updates and what you know what happened in the memorial and all that other stuff we come back to front page news but also a you'll see will be joining us this morning Alexandria cortical Corti Cortes yes he does well because the Cortez that's what color you'll see right this is a C. will join us this morning with you will be here this morning that's right to talk about all everything that's going on in our current world today yes right so we'll pick a winner and a little bit in front page news so we'll tell you about the memorial yesterday Kobe Bryant's memorial and Harvey Weinstein he should be right because right now jail we'll tell you about that so movies the breakfast club good morning it can yeah.

But i think the grammys are fortunate that they can lean on that. Excuse because without that. Excuse i think they maybe ten more people would have been watching. That's right so south east breakfasts and so only one thing to report from royal rumble soda wrestling fans guy named edge. Real name is adam copeland. He returned back from seven years retirement. Check this year. He retired no nine years ago. Excuse me he retired in two thousand eleven. This nigga had broke his neck his neck. Yes the thing that holds your show your head. That's just crazy what i hope. He's safe because on monday. You also did get hit in the head with a chair. Wrestlers the category. So wait i fight. He comes back in what seven years i had like no nine and he jumps in a room with twenty. Nine of the biggest. How could you not love wrestling man. Oh my giants bit and yes and yes. And it's kind of sad. Might jesus too so he doing why. Jesus eighteen another new story. I thought was interesting This week that you see on the joe rogan podcast that Robert downey junior junior actually double down on his stance on us. A black first black-faced tropic thunder. Have you seen traffic. Yeah i have. Did you ever have any like. Did you ever have any hangups about him. Doing the whole black face situation once again night at the time because i was younger teens both so that's like yeah wasn't as pissed off about certain things as much and now i'm kinda back in his own. I wasn't stupid though. I didn't really take offense to it. I never took offense to take offence to and also. I thought it was kinda cool that while on his press tour for me people right. It's actually the depress run He was on the press right. I thought it was just kind of brave and kind of he was like fucking shit. And i told my black around about it and ninety percent back with like. Oh that's hilarious. It ten percent in my black friends were like fuck off your exempted if you do that shit in a classic film. That's like you could do have ways a lot more than like justin trudeau. It does and i mean even justin trudeau aways a lot more than i just white folks black man. Yeah i mean. I believe for some reason maybe. Call it the disney effect. I believe that him wearing black lace was for good intentions. I don't i don't believe in using black lace. We don jr. good white man. I sat out the drake. I don't want to go. Oh no they come into. Drake fan saw always going ahead at war yet at the black face. I can't excuse that one issue. I listened to of course. Did you listen to the the Radar pocket about ready to pass with The interview drake yeah. Would you think not thought it was a. It was a great interview. You don't really get those In-depth drake interviews from the people that you really want to be interviewing him facts man like i don't wanna hear zane lowe interview drake because i don't want to hear zane lowe when he's interviewing anybody else. You're like z. Nah i mean like after the first couple of apple. Music videos exclusive interviews. They put out. Like i feel like from my experience and how i communicate an experience hip hop and rb and the that we make. I just like it when somebody of our ilk yeah 'cause they can get into the more subtle nuances and stuff and ask questions in a certain way. You know what i mean. I get you because it's a different. It's a different podcast because to to a very large extent elliott be our drinks. Jeez drapes jordan was diehard journalists right. So they know more at experience more have seen more than the game and are able to relate to that. And pull that out of drake conway as it is right. I get that a lot. More context and i was really killing it in journalism game. Not the opinionated game whose really killing it in charleston. Game right now. 'cause you write. That interview was a great example of good hip hop journalism. Charlemagne sent that tweet that you i would say In terms of journalism obviously deejay booth right down. Brian right they just they go into the corners of the music and entertainment industry. Like i saw an article headline put. I didn't read the article yet but just like why people who are potentially interested in being music. Writers should really be cautious about jumping into that game interesting. So not only are they talking about the A role in his game. That's not really you know Given any spotlight but then they show you like they're they're writing out extensively giving the details of was good and what's bad about it that's real and you respect them because you know context and once again just consistency being able to do that reaching out you know that's the way over showed all about you always about praising the people behind the scenes the magic behind the movie you know what i'm saying so the magic that was a great How do we get to that. We talking about kobe. Yes of course. Oh yes the grammys. yucky grandma. so Yes all against say about it as as return robert downey junior mundi got special. No yeah yeah. I was so time. Nice showtime she started to move. Nobody would know to fight like thirty years from now when they look back and be. Oh yeah we'll to play integral part. She was authentic louima. But you know. I'll do the video on my youtube to make sure i get my credit. I mean I feel like millennials appreciate money to a decent degree i think. Hopefully you know they keep. She keeps putting out content. She has oscar winning performance. I heard a rumor. She was be the new Old person on boondocks instead of grain on ads. That would be hilarious. Bro that's perfect. That'd be perfect and then you just put like the parkers on nick at night. I'm sure they on izzak show just keeps indicating that shit bro. That's how martin. Yeah and will. I be which she did. Lifelines at pete watch you see what you saw boys for life but you think you know i'm a. I'm a film. Snob mean films. Not it was fun movie. That's the way my mom says things about movies. That were entertaining. You can just like brush off super trash seen fairmount omen. There's a fair amount of life is a fair. You know what's happening. And i hate to say it but i gotta say it because it's the over show. The pike at the only thing does tell the truth on. Pike as we'll smith unless baby losing and losing shot. I'm saying that. I would say after after i kind of i didn't even watch him and his son would go well. That was oh that was around the same time. He can't watch those sometimes. You don't you don't wanna see your heroes fall man. That's just don't lesson. You don't like disney. Throw them a bone with a latin dow's able to get into blockbuster to blockbuster numbers bad boisterous the franchise is gonna keep them on the blockbuster lists but i have another for one more game ever. Since he started picking up the social media. He ever hit a theory when he first started doing a social media thing and it was about movie stars back in the day. Be mystical dad to be like behind yarn reach. Yeah you couldn't really know them for real for because if you've got to know them That would eliminate this distance that draws people to movie stars so when he started his youtube even we started instagram. He said that he wanted to challenge that statement. I think he's gonna lose you. Saw did you watch the breakfast club. Interview did so. He kind of echoes or expands on ant ego in. I think you can do that. So a homegirl. Going to be a little low crash. A homegirl text. The other dance. He asked me window self-care become narcissism and because i'm a very explicit person. The only explanation. I could come up with these masturbating in the mirror. Yeah that's the thing that checks all the boxes that pretty that crosses the line you do self care for self the moment you try to expose self care even for the self interest of you or even tried to promote it marketed. Package it any way that is exposing to the public. It's too far. It s in the bible too. I forget the verse. But i i was the lawn alone. The lord quote me. But i think that's what if you can. The lord says that you could beat it off but when you're distracted from life of beating it off then you got a problem since i'm upset. That's what the lord said. I think what would your version of the The bible be called or my version of the biology called You got the king. James version you got the new international version all of that. You know what it'd be like one allied like the outline value born in value to. That's what would be like saying okay so jumped when i wrote it this think about it. If god's been around for a long time does that. No i'm not gonna go there. I mean we've had to be southeast breakfast flakes. I would say if he wanted to write any other books. Saga god's books. So i am three. Wait hold on. The whole thing was value. Yeah is it good joints. What's the worst value okay So if you talking about. I say volume to my favorite. Yeah so. I guess volume three life. Time's i guess i guess volume through for me is the worst it be right now. I gotta look at the list again. That's exactly what happened. Volume one guy came out with a new testament right now and who and think about it but he got out of three. Oh god you know. i've never seen. I watched the first twenty minutes of the godfather three. Stop watching it. I forgot all about it. I had the whole gas. She was trash Just talk we've been talking about everything. Oh man oh man. We got five minutes less than the show. Scale shadow to a biggie. Smalls inducted to the Twenty twenty class or the rock and roll hall which leads me to the question of still. Did you ever fuck about the rock and roll. I'm low key iraqi. Okay but you care about the hall of fame yeah. I think it's pretty cool. I'm not one of these. I care about the grammy's if i'm being completely honest with you now is having to start in the shower. I care about the oscars. I think it's fucked up. How a jewish state in how the black gaze of minority gains is not necessarily taken into account. But it's very hard and this might tie back into something i said before on the show before is very hard for me to separate Kind of like the glitz glamour in the prestige that goes along with these institutions away from how you get to that prestige. I'm tyler tyler. The creator's very good example of of that mix near. I'm proud to get a grammy. But i also feel like it's a backhanded compliment. Like using it using that platform you know. Sometimes i think that's a little overrated but coming from him as well put as he as he said. I was cool with that. I like he'd been thinking about it. This wasn't eager wasn't a rap album right but you giving me this rap. Let you conveniently box me in with with people. Look like i mean. I've sound you exactly. I appreciate you doing that. It was good but That's how i feel about the hall of fame to this kind of like it's about any institution like the waimea coming up for as coming up. Roller louds coming up. Brockley cities coming up. All these festivals are coming up. These things are curated by people right and people have opinions right so but my my only pushback is the same issue with the grammy's and in the scandal that they're going to now all pretty much revealing shit that we all was already already right now but you know is tired of these bureaucracies of people who are not only out of touch but have no vested interest in being fair Hold positions of power for these kind of milestone kind of I don't know what you call them like Like like the grammies. The oscars war shows the only benefit. I see for these things you know especially with black artists. Is leveraging your money okay now. I'm grammy nominated. I require bigger bag. I won a grammy require bigger bag. But i'm more interested in and stuff like the spotify wars that we talked about a few weeks of data base database. You know of course before that because it's being generated hopefully do it the right way by users by consumers a more democratic way of going about some of these things since numbers are really the main thing that a driving people to get these bags these contracts. Anyway i'll say to go back to the hall of fame. A few minutes left i. It's not necessarily about big beaten into rock and roll hall of fame these concepts of hall of fame's grammy's these old are they old era shit. Is this old. Airship do generation z. Kids give a fuck about the grammys. Now we don't damn care about the hall of absolutely not over over in those organizations are to blame because i feel generation especially is in a position. Where they see they really can tell what's was bullshitting. It's not because. I got nothing to say that i mean those out damn this time for new guard. You know in with kobe passing. Let this be a lesson for all of us. You know time is i mean. It's a reoccurring lesson but time has never promised tomorrow never But there's a whole lot of opportunity for you to make a change today while you're here come wall matt so i think you know what was that that's going to. How are we gonna go. That's my trait right. And so until next time you all keep picking up. These gyms dropping follow us on all social media platforms at ots pod..

Dr umar said maybe we should make that a segment in the show. This is this who was an expert. An expert pilot colby was sabotaged not to mention not to mention. I think he's looking phone right now. Focus come down live in a legal battle with a big pharmaceutical company over the use of the name black mamba. Kobe bryant was engaged in a legal battle with a very powerful pharmaceutical company. Over the use of the name black mamba. Kobe bryant was engaged in a company over the use of the main since the founding editor pizza but he couldn't give us the name of the pharmaceutical. You understand me. No i don't through the fog howard. Propeller was sabotaged. You never go parents. How difficult for terrorists house doctors. God i let it i. Love air quotes. Dr omar johnson. One of my favorite people man Yes you your love to see it and then of course we gotta talk about it. A shot tong shouted to jane doe. Gd bryant right like. I don't want to skip over this. Go here it's been a minister. So i hit the court right. Stay in shape okay. My lateral movement needs work. So until the. I'm not gonna step back on the court but anyway i'm an avid fan of basketball on every level. Right so watch the highschool games or watch a high school week. I'll watch the games lap. And i'll go you know what i'm saying. All his life schooling and house of highlights to the yana mix tapes. And i've been watching those for the past. Maybe four months bro. She was beyond nice really like you know how they say like the wmba is always like perfect because they know fundamental year imagine like sticking to the fundamentals but kobe's guiding you through that i'm not gonna lie man i had i had a dream. I had like a couple of southeast breakfasts. i was hoping so hoping especially when the mean was going out with them you know. Kobe coach girona sideline people was there. Should i was hoping like man. I'd i'd love to see the wnba. Maybe that'll be the the rise. Maybe that'd be the first ryan mega megastar. Second start sick generation star power. The rain out. I think it was like She's she was thirteen. It's thursday and yet but you know her. Bonnie fourteen i year so many could it will still be agree with it. I mean i was. I was looking forward to seeing tedious. Because i had such a huge amount of fan but speak fatherhood bro. I know you wanted to dive into some stuff to know man. Keep going to talk about like i command. You know what really made me think about. So i watched shacks video. Which of course took me over there. If you know seeing big playful last kazan hachette crimes damage. But the thing that kinda like kind of shook me a little bit is this. nigga said. He hadn't talked to kobe since his last point again. Yeah now is like oh it would actually scared me was our creatives that i have made fantastic things with things that i will be forever proud of and i haven't talked to those that haven't talked those people since the end of that project. And even in some cases. I have beef with those people. Leave their creative dynamic things and in some situations like we don't even care for each other anymore. Let's see this situation happened in the shack. Now responded like bebo you might need to tighten up blair calls make you re evaluate your stance on a lot of stuff like clear out. The cash man now needs to be a memory. Something's of space outfit. Cash nigga mad as genius. Zeros matters genius but yet you wanna to talk about the gif hood man like. He's not the first father. Figure two women that we you know. I've been exposed to where i'm like inspired by but like to see how he at least towards of his career because i don't know his whole life but how engaged he wasn't his daughters lives. How you can tell from other interviews. Not just in being john as a basketball games but you hear other reporters talk about how proud he spoke of. Not just being girl dad but knowing all the details to his other daughters who is the -sarily for girls super into the same things that he was italian oldest one like playing volleyball. Maybe she leans closer to her mom but the one thing that he never wavered with was his pride in his daughters right. And you know you know. We both been on talk. Brush out jeremy of the show always annoys listening. You know what i mean. It really just kind of makes you like like sunday. Didn't make me realize. Like i wanna be a great father. Two daughters right but it definitely like cements like a standard In terms of like where. I wanna be. Did you know handsome. So this is sad. That both are gone. But yeah just really makes you think about about a lot of that and then you can even on the flip side. Those like you can do everything. Almost almost right like have millions of dollars have thirteen million dollared helicopters mansions in the hills and private helicopter pilot. And do you want to go to the elephant graveyard elephant graveyard say elephant graveyards. So of course. People are celebrating the life with kobe. Bryant there are some individuals who are Recalling certain parts of kobe's life that weren't as bright and of course i'm talking about his his rape case I don't even know what to say. I just feel it's appropriate to bring it up to let people know at least from my perspective that i do hear you. I do hear the voices of survivors were therefore Whatever the results of the case may be i no. He was found innocent. The case right. He was not that they said out of court. And in both the civil end the ano- for sure Set it on on you know. I'm just gonna labor found guilty but he settled right here stuff that he said in la times. I thought it was very interesting. And i don't have the full quote but i thought it was interesting because people say that as a half ass apology but i just thought it was interesting that he situation he said it was he said after fourteen months of the case after all the evidence that was provided after hearing her talk about it or not talk about it he could finally understand fourteen minutes after those fourteen months how she came to the conclusion that it wasn't consensual. I thought that was very very political. Statement thousand very brave statement because he could not say got anything come by kobe. Bryant is like before twitter. Yeah so now that there is right now there is to it i just i just find it interesting that even even this quote unquote dark spot in his Legacy is still outshine by all the light that he brought. I don't see. I don't see too much of that Too much of that conversation. Overcrowding the rest of the memorial for kobe bryant. And maybe we'll see as this time time goes on. It's always gonna be. There's always going to be a bullet point list.

"I feel like my life won't be the same again I don't know maybe just because of this news will sometimes. I may feel like this but I really feel like somebody snatched a big part of my life. I from me will be brand. The name says it was very sad Monday morning for me when my a foreign language and received the heart breaking news that could be met with an accident. I thought it might be just a small accident. Maybe some injuries to them. But later when I got to know the person from whom I got inspiration more division meaning spit it. Never give up attitude and his mom and daddy my heat off life was no more. Do started flowing. And I kept crying and his memories with his Number Eight Jersey juicy on me. This started way back in nine hundred ninety nine when I saw the first hour. NBA Live Game on television division. It was a game right from the first quarter of play in the end of the game. My is never went off from this one player. Game and instantly became a fan of him. Whose name was Kobe Bryant? This is where my journey as an NBA defend began. It was only because of Kobe. Brian what will be made me feed getting they will be expedited but NBA. We did meet me is all because of him talking about his memories. "Because the league is so so competitive in so good and the one thing i will say do you remember when dan dockage did maryland's it right from the get go early in in maryland's big ten life dockage did a couple of games at xfinity center and he was in love with xfinity entity center and he talked about oh my god this may be the best environment in the big ten and he's like but you know you're merrill jesse you know you're in the big ten now you can have some places to go to and i thought who the hell is this guy have you have you ever heard of cameron indoor have you ever heard of the dean dome have you ever heard of u. haul back in the day or carmichael back in the day or little john back in the day i mean they're the had some had plenty of venues that were really difficult to play in not to mention marilyn's to coalfield house and xfinity center senator but i have to say that this big ten for basketball you take northwestern out of the equation is there a place you go to penn state's not a great home environment penn state northwestern and the only to every other home venue is first rate like by the way and has real history assembly hall may may be number one i dunno east lansing breslin center maryland's clearly in the top three in this league in terms of home environment west lafayette the the produce got a great home environment illinois hasn't been good recent years but when they've been good basketball they've we've had a great home environment what again michigan chrysler you know yes it's it is really a grind in turgeon said on friday i think it was he said look part of this this year of of the row teams having a difficult time in this league is that everybody's good this year northwestern was close against ohio state last night at home they've been close against everybody but anyway the stigma thing thing i'm fine with it i'm really not that overly worked up about it i don't think it's classless i think it's emotional i think it's competitive i i understand from a coach's perspective and i guarantee you if i were the coach in that position i wouldn't want my players doing that necessarily but at the same time back in the locker room i might i'd say that was awesome in we we came back from six down in the final minute won a game and jalen is all fired up and he's feeling himself now i mean he's confident some of that i i like i'm one last thing before before i run so yesterday in the proble which i did not watch any of them but i was told that they had this rule in place did you see this for onside kicks the rules proposed last year by baliles denver exactly where instead of an onside sidekick you can take the ball at your own twenty five yard line for four th and ten and then a fourth and fifth team excuse me yes fourth and fifteen and so whatever happens on that play get stopped they get the ball there if you make it you keep the ball in it's fourth and fifteen at the twenty five yard line i actually love the idea i really do love the idea but with that said and yesterday i think it was kirk cousins who was the quarterback for the play i think realized they haven't yet cousins apparently i didn't see the any of the pro bowl because apparently came in is the third quarterback for the NFC behind breeze and wilson i guess he was was he the first alternate after rogers dropped out probably probably maybe dak why wouldn't have dak played i dunno whatever but apparently he had thrown for two touchdowns and and it was a close game and they chose the on side kick you know alternative and they didn't make it i was told i didn't see the play but i was thinking about this especially especially with the super bowl upcoming like if i were the redskins and the chiefs jazz scored to make it you know thirty eight thirty four that'd be a good game do your part of let's make it more realistic redskins twenty seven to twenty one you know and they're lining up for we probably shouldn't take the chiefs and say twenty seven twenty yeah but i but my point is if you're the chiefs in your mahomes like the mahomes russell wilson's stuff yes the fourth and fifteen isn't enough off it should be portland twenty i mean i think fourth in twenty more reflects the probability of an onside kick or increases it just slightly fourth and fifteen i dunno for mahomes wouldn't that be like thirty percent at least i yeah i mean especially when you now now against certain defenses like you're almost throwing it up and hoping for a flag if nothing else i mean he's going to do is move around a little bit and all of a sudden areas tire kills wide open all of a sudden if they adopted and i was andy reid i would at least strongly look at it doesn't matter when the game is i'm just going for because why not i know that's that's sort of my point i mean you don't want to give up field position you know at the twenty five yard line that that much but certainly i think that i don't know maybe it's fourth with an eighteen that needs to happen fourth and fifteen for certain teams in certain quarterbacks is going to be so much higher erin than the than what they're looking for the onside kick probability to be let's just say they would like onsite kicks to be recovered instead of six percent of the time which at its way down you know they want it to the whatever it used to be twelve percent eleven percent of the time fourteen percent fourth and fifteen is for too many teams is gonna be the twenty five to thirty five percent probability maybe not thirty five but i would say definitely a one in four i'd say twenty five percent chance chance for russell wilson aaron rodgers patrick mahomes certain teams and that makes that that thing too high to make football really the interesting at the same time but if i'm if i'm the team that's i i'd much rather see kansas city lineup and trying onside kick then have mahomes go for a fourth and fifteen the i think the targets on you want something that can be converted like ten to fifteen percent of the time yeah i think that's the target onside kick where it's at like three percent now or whatever you're right it's way too low that's gotten out of control the other way i think ten to fifteen where you're shooting for all right that is it we're done and for the day enjoy the rest of the day back tomorrow with tommy.

"We can say whatever be one about turgeon you can say whatever you want about their team they are dangerous they they can in have the ability on any given night to put it together and beat anybody in the country they have that kind of ability i love linda linda constructed to you know i think he should play seaborn shoot more but they got into that situation where you want to my age because they're getting out rebounded a little bit so he had him in there actually thought he sub too much for for sticks once or twice it certainly in the first half i think it was we gave them arrest maybe for the under eight and i'm like don't do that sticks doesn't have one foul how he's been late game we had a couple of free throws and he was getting a breather there play your best players you know he is i mean cowan played thirty six minutes sticks played thirty thirty five and he got good contributions i mean i like the way sarah smith is defending and i don't mind when he shoots it he's not the greatest a ball handlers necessarily thoroughly as a hell of a basketball game i hell of a basketball game on a truly strange and bizarre and surreal day because of of of what was going on in los angeles but maryland wins it and you know for all those people that were tweeting me and friends the miners saying dude come on you can't lose to wisconsin because you can't get the ball inbounds and it was frustrating it was i was you know the bad that inbounds pass was bad but they played well against wisconsin and if you look at maryland they've now won six of eight games and they've only played poorly in one game in that was the game at iowa and since iowa just as a matter of fact since iowa beat maryland on that night they've now won four in a row okay and they're ranked and they beat rutgers over the weekend rutgers has been rolling they beat michigan last week so iowa our rankings out yet for today because maryland's going down yeah i was gonna jump up yeah they usually come out around noon so not quite okay so i was gonna jump up from nineteenth to inside the top fifteen maryland's gonna clearly move up from seventeenth seventeenth inside the top fifteen so thursday night in college park with the students finally back you got a big time match up and i think we talked about it on friday and how many big games maryland has their schedule and winning sunday we both said it this would be a massive win for those of you saying this tergence best road win never shut up in the end is not even ranked i know that they hadn't won at indiana i understand that maryland won a lot of road games i know that they haven't won a lot of road games against ranked teams that he you know iowa last week was the first time that that's happened they've won plenty of road games okay against good opponents during the turgeon and era i don't consider that to be the greatest road and i think he was a big win don't get me wrong it was a really big win and important win because it keeps them in that top two two three in the big ten only a game behind believe it or not illinois but the upcoming games for them all right listen to this i would home thursday night i was been playing great they're going to be in the top fifteen fifteen when they come in here thursday night and they got pummeled by iowa in iowa city then they're gonna play rutgers who is playing exceptionally well they were ranked twenty fourth last tweak or rutgers yeah records was ranked twenty fourth and they wanna game last week in lost a game last week right the nebraska lost at iowa lost but a close game they may not they may not fall at all they it wouldn't shock me they're still twenty five or so yeah and then they get illinois in this is the real surprise of the big ten illinois currently in first place in the big ten after beating michigan they've won six games in a row including two three on the road a k a league league that you have not been able to win on the road this year the ally and i have one at wisconsin at purdue in michigan in the last three weeks and they play minnesota on thursday and they've been other game on sunday okay iowa and then they get maryland at home maryland's game in their win over for illinois is one of only two big ten losses for illinois and remember marilyn was down big in that game and came back and took pretty much they're only lead on that cowan three to win it fifty nine fifty eight and that's going to be a game that we look back on and maryland fans are going to be very thankful that they got illinois early on because brad underwood there would completely changed his system this year he figured it wasn't what he was doing wasn't working in the big ten he studied he just kinda changed this whole system and and it took a little while to implement that's why took a weird loss to miami why lost not necessarily lost weight loss to missouri but all of a sudden it seems to be working and they've reeled off six straight cowan hit that three to tie it and then got stealing got on the other end of the a wild ending and it was pretty much the last time the students were still in college park for a game because that was in december so you should have phenomenal environments but marilyn's i mean look they've got they've got illinois illinois iowa they've got two games michigan state they have two games with curse they still play michigan they still play ohio state on the road they still play a ohio state and they don't they play minnesota i think they play minnesota on the road as well they may have another game against northwestern you've you've got right now january twenty seven we got a month and a half before the tournament starts and you're going to have eight to ten ten maryland basketball games that are going to be considered heavyweight twenty twenty college basketball matchups the rest of the way those two games with michigan state the one one in east lansing which is they they play their first in then here in late february both of those games have not been assigned time yet yet because both of those potentially are ESPN game day sites i don't think ESPN game days been backed college they were there for the duke you came in oh five or six something like five five they haven't been back since wow that's unbelievable yeah of course part of that is we don't have we haven't had for six years there's a big maryland duke or maryland carolina game in college park were still getting used to what our big games in the big ten arbat maryland's right there a game out of first and and then aaron after you know a a massive win for marilyn and really one of those stunning sort of you know come from behind wins in the final minute of a game jalen stick smith really showed the kind of of three to one and then erin became the very end of the game after maryland had one and after indiana admits that final shot in jalen sticks smith who clearly more likely than not what had been heckled by in indiana fan base or group fans or perhaps even an individual fan headed over towards the area of the court in which he was having an ongoing interaction with some of the fans in that you had seen it from a couple of minutes earlier in the game and basically started screaming my effing house okay to the point where he was demonstrative where people were throwing things at them from the crowd in and here comes turgeon sprinting across the cord and very emotionally grabbing jalen sand get out of here we don't do this and turgeon opened opened up i have not heard the press conference i'm going to watch it i read the the opening remarks where he spent you know a minute or two apologizing to indiana basketball who's your nation archie miller in the indiana fans and players for jalen you know doing doing what he was doing he said he jalen was taunting the crowd and said it's a great environment tough environment the emotion got him and we know this is maryland basketball ask welfare that's not jalen smith you know he's the opposite of his personality yeah and so in defended him in you know during that press conference by saying those of you you that no jalen that's not as personality that's not who he is and then jalen tweeted out something at the end apologizing as well so my reaction to this is not really worked up over the over jalen smith's reaction i sort of like the fire i like the intensity it's certainly something right understand the coaches reaction okay i do i understand that coaches reaction of we're gonna we're gonna win with class we're going to win uh with with understanding that we may be playing this team again in maybe a month in the big ten tournament or a month and a half or whatever but you know what i mean i'm a maryland basketball fan college park was the only place that coach k. wouldn't let his players come come to our his players family their families come to he wouldn't let his own family come to games college park i'm a maryland fan i remember when gravest vasquez used to taunt the fans at cameron indoor you know alabama when he took that last minute three against NC state ended the did the shimmy yeah yeah in so i it it seemed out of character completely for jalen we don't know what was being said i can tell you this that indiana fans according to a lot of big ten longtime big dent ten fans are really rough on the on the opponents in the same way that maryland fans tend to be really rough i mean you want to see behavior by fans towards a player go back and just see if you can find the f. JJ rettig chance you know the the things that the duke players had to put put up with so i i sort of understand it from every side i'm just telling that from my perspective i've no problem that he got super emotional final super hyped up super pissed at the interaction that he had during the game in the heckling that he was probably taking from the indiana fans and i saw a fire in his his belly that i hadn't really seen but we've seen here in the last few games and so i'm not really i'm not that worked up or upset about it to be honest with you i'm gonna take it a step farther i'm glad i'm happy to see it as you said i i wanted to see that fire it's part of basketball and as long as it doesn't cross any lines as long as he's not going into the standard of course and you know the the profanity to take to a to a different level in the this is my house my floor yeah no problem with that i i don't really think there's a way you can i don't know here's the thing about vasquez when vasquez used to interact with opposing fans there was sort of a lovable aspect to it and a good natured aspect to it on the fan by the time he got to be a senior and people newham in new you know i think a lot of ACC fans hated vascular hey i mean he took a lot of abuse and he loved it uh-huh well to the NC state one was after they were just channing racial slurs that in the whole game that's true and that either i think it may have been at virginia tech your yeah we had some of that in that game where he went for like forty one in double overtime double overtime on the road but you know it's it's sports it's emotional it's intense you know as a maryland basketball fan i've been looking for you know some real new rivalries he's new controversies to ourselves involved in while winning of course and because it's really been sort of a square peg into a round hole here for the first six seasons and now in six years i mean now we're sort of ingrained in this league and it's not always pleasant to be a part of this league but this year is really interesting interesting because the league is so so competitive in so good and the one thing i will say do you remember when dan dockage did maryland's it right.

part of that is we don't have we haven't had for six years there's a big maryland duke or maryland carolina game in college park were still getting used to what our big games in the big ten arbat maryland's right there a game out of first and and then aaron after you know a a massive win for marilyn and really one of those stunning sort of you know come from behind wins in the final minute of a game jalen stick smith really showed the kind of of three to one and then erin became the very end of the game after maryland had one and after indiana admits that final shot in jalen sticks smith who clearly more likely than not what had been heckled by in indiana fan base or group of fans or perhaps even an individual fan headed over towards the area of the court in which he was having an ongoing interaction with some of the fans in that you had seen it from a couple of minutes earlier in the game and basically started screaming my effing house okay to the point where he was demonstrative where people were throwing things at them from the crowd in and here comes turgeon sprinting across the cord and very emotionally grabbing jalen sand get out of here we don't do this and turgeon opened opened up i have not heard the press conference i'm going to watch it i read the the opening remarks where he spent you know a minute or two apologizing to indiana basketball who's your nation archie miller in the indiana fans and players for jalen you know doing doing what he was doing he said he jalen was taunting the crowd and said it's a great environment tough environment the emotion got to him and we know this is maryland basketball ask welfare that's not jalen smith you know he's the opposite of his personality yeah and so in defended him in you know during that press conference by saying those of you you that no jalen that's not as personality that's not who he is and then jalen tweeted out something at the end apologizing as well so my reaction to this is not really worked up over the over jalen smith's reaction i sort of like the fire i like the intensity it's certainly something right understand the coaches reaction okay i do i understand that coaches reaction of we're gonna we're gonna win with class we're going to win uh with with understanding that we may be playing this team again in maybe a month in the big ten tournament or a month and a half or whatever but you know what i mean i'm a maryland basketball fan college park was the only place that coach k. wouldn't let his players come come to our his players family their families come to he wouldn't let his own family come to games college park maryland fan i remember when gravest vasquez used to taunt the fans at cameron indoor you know alabama when he took that last minute three against NC state ended the did the shimmy yeah yeah in so i it it seemed out of character completely for jalen we don't know what was being said i can tell you this that indiana fans according to a lot of big ten longtime big dent ten fans are really rough on the on the opponents in the same way that maryland fans tend to be really rough i mean you want to see behavior by fans towards a player go back and just see if you can find the f. JJ rettig chance you know the the things that the duke players had to put put up with so i i sort of understand it from every side i'm just telling that from my perspective i've no problem that he got super emotional final super hyped up super pissed at the interaction that he had during the game in the heckling that he was probably taking from the indiana fans and i saw a fire in his his belly that i hadn't really seen but we've seen here in the last few games and so i'm not really i'm not that worked up or upset about it to be honest with you i'm gonna take it a step farther i'm glad i'm happy to see it as you said i i wanted to see that fire it's part of basketball and as long as it doesn't cross any lines as long as he's not going into the standard of course and you know the the profanity to takes a to a to a different level in the this is my house my floor iii yeah no problem with that i i don't really think there's a way you can i don't know here's the thing about vasquez when vasquez used to interact with opposing fans there was sort of a lovable aspect to it and a good natured aspect to it on the fan by the time he got to be a senior and people newham in new you know i think a lot of ACC fans hated vascular hey i mean he took a lot of abuse and he loved it uh-huh well to the.

"To activate the offer mybookie dot AG and then use my my promo code kevin kevin dc all right let's talk about what was going on in what you and i were both watching when the kobe news broke broke first of all i have not asked you aaron when it broke how did you find out or how did you find out about it you're obviously watching the maryland game i know that so oh i don't know there were like eight nine minutes left in the game somewhere around there ten minute mark of the second half what how did you handle it so i was i was just i was is in bed i had my laptop i was watching the game and all of a sudden i see like the very early one of the early tweets re tweets of TMZ and miami thing it was just kinda blasted out on texts and i watch thirty seconds of the game after it was on and i could hear you know i remember at the end saying oh in in maryland gets a big win i was like i kind of look like oh they they won okay but yeah for for those two minutes i was barely watching the game yeah because when the it i started to trickle out on social media maryland was down eight they had gone from up fourteen in the first half to down eight in the second half and the game let me just say this spectacular game which i recorded and went back and watched the final ten minutes of late last night because i really felt like i did not know what the hell was going on in those final ten minutes we were switching stations in watching the kobe stuff in on social media following the story but this game started with a first-half from maryland that followed the second half against northwestern that if you add the two together the back tobacco cabs they had scored ninety six points in those two halves fifty one in the second half northwestern forty five in the first half yesterday in bloomington against indiana and it was like doc i've mentioned about the northwestern game that he had gone to something that he typically hasn't done in the past i don't know how much he's really done and it's more of a five out free free flowing let your playmakers make plays couple of rules offense you know wasn't micromanaging each possession and it turned out you know really really well l. for them at northwestern soon as you go into indiana and in the first half i mean things are flowing now they're running more half court offense and more half court sets you you know than they did in the second half against northwestern but at one point maryland was shooting sixty seven percent and they were nine for thirteen from behind the arc early in that game they could not miss but either could indiana but maryland did build a fourteen point lead that was cut to nine at half and i swear to god i said to corbin at halftime erin and i go i'm gonna tell you right now there's going to be a point in the second half where maryland is going to trail in the game he's like they're up nine i'm like they're gonna be down at least one one at some point in this game well they weren't down one they were down eight within it was twenty th they out scott outscored twenty four to seven to start the second half and like the first six minutes indiana went eleven for thirteen to start that second half and with you know they built a sick the eight point lead was built here it is they won up eight with eleven forty five to go so an eight minutes and fifteen seconds back in stay at erased a nine point deficit and were up eight so there it is that was the twenty four seven stretch for them and then it was sort of the rest of the way a game in which maryland was hanging in there there are a couple of moments where it could have turned ugly indiana missed a couple of easy shots missed a couple of open threes is that could have extended you know a seven point lead to ten and then who knows but maryland hung in there they really did they hung in there they kept closing it back to six back to i five and then it got you know back to seven on a on a breakaway dunk right around four minutes to go and then i thought down the stretch the first first crucial play for the turps at seventy one sixty four down seven and you're heading for the under four time out indiana eric i alam l. a. misses a a tough dry baseline in a layup but it was a layup he should have made it they missed it and down comes indiana with a chance to stretch it to nine or ten and we're under four minutes now and they missed en- daryl more cell grabbed a key rebound and then he went coast to coast it wasn't smooth but he got to the rim he scored award got fouled they went to the under four television timeout maryland's down five and he's got a free throw on the other end they could have been up nine or ten but but instead they've got a chance to cut it to four which they did more cell did not play well in the first half at all he sat a lot net first-half looked like you know turgeon was a bit upset with him offensively defensively but we've seen this with their more cell before like in big moments down the stretch he comes up with clutch place ways so they that cut it to four then they fell behind by six seventy three sixty seven and then cowan makes a huge three you know off a off a hand off screen fra a hand off pass and then screened set simultaneously by sticks and he makes this three in its seventy four seventy but then they go up by six and now we're down to close to a minute to go and then sticks makes a driving layup which is not a comfort zone shot dot for him in fact i didn't like the shot at all but he made it and at seventy six seventy two with a minute to go maryland called their last time out after that bucket and they set up the pressure and they gotta steal cowan actually got his hands on a pass jalen smith came up with it they got it to wiggins and that's the shot right there erin because that's an impossible shot he is he was guarded it was contested he knocks down a deep three and with fifty seconds to go it's a one point game and and on the other end maryland gets a stop they don't have any timeouts left they get the rebound anthony cowan gets a quick you know high ball screen corrine from smith who dives to the paint cowan hits him he catches it puts it on the floor and scores i saw a lot of indiana people saying that jalen had walked worked on that plane no he didn't i mean what planet are you on to think that he traveled on that play tracy jackson davis on the other end on what should have been a game winner her for them clearly traveled or carried the ball and it wasn't called and you're not gonna get that call either but sticks made a really good catch got us got himself together to one hard dribble rebel and laid it in with fourteen and a half seconds to go and then merrill got the stop on the other end but it was really a lucky stop in many ways because indiana got hard to get anything better than basically typically uncontested from three feet because sticks was actually stumbling away from jackson davis who missed the floater and in maryland grabbed the rebound and they seventy seven to seventy six by scoring seven point straight to end the game after being down six crazy easy game both teams played well i the couple of things stood out before we get to what happened at the end of the game with jalen smith number one is this anthony cowan was was absolutely unguardable in this game on guard -able and what's really interesting is i got a lot of friends and you do too probably they'll they'll read the box scores as only six fifteen or the other night he was only two for ten or whatever watch the game okay he's impacting the game in many ways in on many nights without outscoring a lot or with bad shooting you know he can have it he's had it off night's shooting here recently but played very well he got wherever he wanted to go at any point he was the most difficult cover on the court i would like i am going to make time to go watch the arch i like watching the press conferences after it here the coaches i haven't heard archie miller but they had no answer no answer for cowan they also did not have an answer for sticks smith who got set up by cowan and i al a bunch in the game but but wow the jump that sticks his made here in the last couple of games air you know do you know how many people including my sons were massive maryland basketball fans who just thought sticks was way overrated for much of last year and this year and i kept saying when you got two first place playing the five spotty should be playing the four spot but but he's see how many times have i told you in the weeks since we've been doing the podcast i've said he's got to shoot more key shooting those threes he's got he's got one of the best strokes on the team four for six from behind the arc yesterday a career high twenty nine after setting a career high twenty five the other night another double double his third straight double double in this stretch of wins over purdue northwestern in indiana he was incredible yesterday dominant in more block shots yesterday he's he's got more lopa he's getting more comfortable with his post moves as of point probably three weeks ago oh i definitely had conversation where we were like oh there's no way he's a first rounder now at least we get him for another here so i don't know where exactly it happened how it happened but he's definitely kicked into a completely different gear his mentality just seems completely different yeah he was he was i'm not gonna say passive but he definitely wasn't assertive early on and now it seems it seems like he's in all right i'm not gonna you know it's cowan's team but he's the guy i mean sticks difference maker when you got a team and i was going to get to this point next but when you got a team that does have scores i'll talk about here about this momentarily and now you've got a guard a five-man out to the three point line and you've got guys like cowen who it with open with an open floor and open paint are gonna really really dice you up your dangerous so here's the other thing about maryland look we a lot of you think that i always get get way too excited after a win or two bullish in don't criticize them enough when they lose whatever had it i tell you how i feel and i've been critical last year was much more critical of this team in their pace of play particularly than i been about this team because this team does have scores they do have shooters maryland's three point percentage shooting this year's been terrible but i've multiple times i've said on this podcast on the radio show it doesn't make sense to me because you know wiggins has a great stroke cowan can really shoot it i alec can really shoot it jalen smith can really stroke it from deep dante scott can shoot it sorelle smith can shoot it and that you know remember with wiggins a couple times and i said to you they're going to be some of these there's going to be a night here where he's going to go five for for ten from from behind the arc and he's gonna end up with twenty six he's coming off the bench right now i don't think he's playing enough minutes i'll just tell you play twenty six minutes yesterday what while cowan going in smith got thirty six and thirty five respectively he's i think just as important in in some ways but whatever seems to be comfortable and he hit a huge three ended up with with eight points on two for five from behind the arc but they've got guys and see this is what makes them very very dangerous is more nights than not they're good good would defensive team i thought they were not very good defensively yesterday but i also give indiana credit archie miller runs great stuff they get the people open in didn't matter about zone or man i i mean i i don't know what turgeon was thinking in that bench was thinking 'cause they tried so so many things defensively and indiana kept getting shots at the rim they miss them in the first half they didn't miss any at the start of the second half but but they ran good zone stuff they ran good man stuff they got a good team they have a very good team they're fifteen and five in maryland our own had beaten them by sixteen or seventeen but they had a thirty point lead in the game in college park you know a month ago but but maryland is hard hard to cover and i know there have been these games were they've really struggled to score but i think it's a product of this league and how tough it is defensively and how tough it is on the road and how well scouted teams are but they have i mean you're crazy just try to be objective about it.

"Whenever you're listening to this it's just a aaron and yours truly today crazy day yesterday obviously one of those days that you know for for a lot of people not everybody okay i recognize not everybody was moved yesterday even if you were surprised but it is one of those days and fortunately they don't happen very often which is why when they do they hit so hard but one of the yesterday's one of those days you're going to remember member where you were and what you're doing when you heard the news that kobe bryant was killed in a helicopter crash in in my lifetime you know there have been and you know i don't know three four super surreal days where it seems like a dream you know it really hit home there's nothing in my lifetime lifetime that hit home in terms of an athlete steph look nine eleven there was no more surreal day the nine eleven you know that's not necessarily comparable in scope to what we had yesterday or to another you know entertainer or athlete dying but it's comparable in sort of human reaction and emotion but for me the day that len bias died is dale never ever forget and it was certainly not a worldwide reaction like yesterday's was but it was shocking in the same way and sean taylor's death was shocking because the night before he passed away there was encouraging news if you recall that he was perhaps going to survive and be okay but yesterday's just one of those days total shock total bewilderment you know you're hoping that it isn't true then you're dealing with the fact that it is true and then there is sadness and then there or the awful images you know human images in your own mind of how it happened you know the recognition of how it can all end so quickly you know no matter how would you are you know no matter what condition you are it is a reminder you know how fleeting life is in specially for a younger generation when someone like he a hero like kobe bryant dies it's like their first experience with oh my god this can happen the thirteen eighteen year old daughter gina being in that helicopter as well is really a difficult swallow for everybody i just you just hope is apparent you know in most of you are many of you are you just hope that you know koby was they're comfortable with you know comfort for for her that they were together holding each other you know and probably him saying it's gonna be okay if they knew that assumes that they did know what was coming in that in itself is horrifying to even think about but anyway these these days are shocking they're horrifying they're sad and then you know they also so are sort of influencing in the moment you know for a few hours or a day or two you think about what's really important in life you know everybody takes a moment to recognize you well how fleeting life can be and it becomes instructive in you get people on twitter you know doing me give a hug to somebody tell those close to you how you feel tell people that you love that you love them there's all of that of course some but i'll tell you you know personally kobe bryant's death is a big deal for a generation that grew up watching him appreciating him i realizing him and he was for my boys they're my sons there jordan he was my my boys were crushed rushed yesterday erin my oldest is not much of a sports fan but my two younger children corbin who you know very very well and my younger son ryan were absolutely devastated they loved kobe bryant corbin was a massive kobe bryant fan he he used to wake up before school middle school and he would go right to sportscenter highlights if the lakers played the night before and would read box scores he knew everything and still does to this date everything about kobe bryant kobe was his guy and my youngest my youngest son because his older brother was a kobe guy he became a massive kobe fan in corbin was with me yesterday were watching the maryland game you know the maryland indiana game which i'm going to get to i mean we're gonna do some sports on the show today and it was just an incredible game and we're watching that game together and during big maryland games it's usually the three of us us on a group text if we're not in the same locations talking about the game and my son ryan who's at penn state senator text in the you know in the second half he's like colby oh b- died question mark are you guys seeing this and we hadn't immediately went to twitter and from that point forward the maryland indiana the anna game became insignificant for us and i can tell you you know for my family for that game yesterday to become a total afterthought that saying something complete elite shock you overtook the room and it became a massive search for information on twitter you know and i remember i got a text from a friend of mine mine at during this thing TMZ just took the took the report down and i said that to my son and he's like well maybe it's not true maybe it's you know there's there's this brief relief or hope that wasn't true but as it turned out it was the internet was exploding yesterday during this and i did read early this morning that for a few minutes TMC's website had crashed which is why i got a text from a friend saying it's been taken down but twitter was in uttar stunned disbelief in the report i came the first report was TMZ you know this TMZ which has really really gotten a lot of shit right for a long time now you know they are not traditional media as we've known it for modem the the majority of our lifetime but we know who TMZ is we've broken so many stories have gotten things wrong too but they've gotten a lot of stuff right how did they get this one and well i did hear just about an hour ago that they were actually going to do a story on koby and this basketball league in his daughter her so they were sort of in the general vicinity but still when it's TMZ you're thinking act could be wrong you're not totally sure you you know so then the l a TV station the local affiliate i think it was the ABC affiliate they were the next to sort of put it out there and interest in confirm it but still for the first thirty minutes of this thing it wasn't on ESPN and it wasn't on the crawl it wasn't on CNN MSNBC fox news networks there was no crawl there was no anything so you are thinking you know is it true you know or because even in this day and age aaron where sometimes the networks and the major newspapers are like the last ones to find out in sometimes it's because they're the they're the only ones that are going to make sure that it's completely confirmed in multiple sources true journalism rules all of that perhaps even waiting for next of kin to be notified lied but still when it finally showed up on television it made it sort of real you know even though i think at that point it was starting to become real and then we had at least in our our minimum of multiple reports that turned out to be completely inaccurate like rick fox former NBA player former laker mike wilbon was on radio with me this morning for a half an hour rick fox is one of kobe's very closest friends and for you know for solid thirty minutes rick fox had perished on the helicopter with them there was also the report that was really devastating and troubling deal with that all four of his daughters were on the helicopter but as it turned out it was koby it was his thirteen year old daughter jonah they called her g. g. seven others not part of kobe's family were on the plane including a legendary baseball coach from orange coast college in southern california john john altobelli the son of joe altobelli who was the manager for the orioles world series winner in nineteen eighty three and john l. tobel altobelli and his wife kerry and his daughter eliza who was teammates with kobi's daughter gianna that's why they were on the helicopter together because they are we're headed to a basketball game according to according to john altobelli brother ge- he would routinely fly with his daughter to attend games with kobe on kobe's helicopter was kobe's helicopter used it to get around everywhere for a long period of time there was an assistant and girls basketball coach named christina mouser who coached at a private school in l. a. a. k. through eight private schools she was on the helicopter and there were three others as well l. nine in total some of the details of the crash really started to come out late last night early this morning ESPN had an in-depth report about the crash the helicopter it was climbing at about twenty four hundred feet trying to make a turn before dove to the ground the the ESPN in story said that the pilot had only moments before he contacted air traffic controllers to say that he had begun to climb to go above a cloud layer it was a a heavy clouds in the area we know that whether now was certainly an issue and perhaps a factor in the crash the NTSB will eventually give us the cause of the crash but it was shortly after nine forty AM pacific time the helicopter turned for a third or fourth time i'm trying to climb to two thousand feet above sea level and then according to this report it descended and crashed into a hillside at about fourteen hundred feet and when it struck the ground the helicopters flying at about one hundred and eighty four miles per hour and descending at a rate of more than four thousand feet per minute the video we saw the video of all of the fire and the smoke on that hillside you know it's an awful sight regardless of who's involved but the fact that kobe bryant was on that flight at turned a local story a tragic local story into a worldwide story it was sort of sports pop culture colliding yesterday day in total and utter disbelief not just here in this country but around the world i had a friend of mine you know i'm sure like everybody you with your group of the friends that you text with and you communicate with texts are flying and one of my friends said bias you know and i said yes in in terms of the same level of shock for us but you know in in the comparison would be an athlete so strong so skilled you you know never thinking they almost look like they're nothing could happen to them but the reaction to kobe's death is worldwide len bias mrs was more of a US reaction in kobe's death is huge china throughout europe throughout australia and new zealand in all around the world basketball is either the second most popular sport in the world behind soccer or at least the third behind soccer and cricket in i think i've been corrected on on this when i've said it's the second most popular sport in the world because cricket is super popular too but the NBA so huge and in some mhm cases as big in other areas of the world as it's almost as big as here kobe bryant wasn't perfect all right we know we know the story of colorado and nineteen year old hotel worker he was very different though i i remember having conversations about this many times you know he spoke multiple languages fluently he lived much of his childhood in europe most of it in italy because his father was a professional basketball player as most of you know he he was very intelligent you know he's one of the great players of all time you know without a doubt but he was you know it it's when you you live outside of this country when you live internationally when you live in different places in different cultures you're you're exposed to a lot more than perhaps apps a lot of his contemporaries were growing up and it's one of the reasons in wilpon pointed this out on radio with me this morning it's one of the reasons that this is being taken console hard worldwide and why kobe was so popular in in places international even even more so than a lot of the others that preceded him including michael and larry in magic it's because there was this sense that kobe was different he had lived life in europe in his formative years he spoke all all these different languages he was more sort of versatile as a human being you know and look i mean mo- much of the world views america is very narrow is very self absorbed you know and it's it's it's not necessarily true do but that's the perception of it and you know kobe was viewed differently he was viewed much differently which is one of the reasons that he was so super popular around the world he's one of the great players of all time you know we've done this prior to his death and we will do this for years to come after his death the conversation about how great was he you know where does he rank well on a day like today i'm not one of these people that's gonna to say oh you can't talk about that or it's inappropriate to talk about this at this point any reaction that people have to me you know in emotions long as it's not personally personally attacking is is fine we all react in our own ways but it's fine to talk about his career today you know what i read on the inner we're not talking talking about rankings and stuff for not talking about this got to give it a few days whatever everybody i'm gonna talk about it right here he's not a top ten player of all time i'm sorry sorry.

remember i got a text from a friend of mine mine at during this thing TMZ just took the took the report down and i said that to my son and he's like well maybe it's not true maybe it's you know there's there's this brief relief or hope that wasn't true but as it turned out it was the internet was exploding yesterday during this and i did read early this morning that for a few minutes TMC's website had crashed which is why i got a text from a friend saying it's been taken down but twitter was in uttar stunned disbelief in the report i came the first report was TMZ you know this TMZ which has really really gotten a lot of shit right for a long time now you know they are not traditional media as we've known it for modem the the majority of our lifetime but we know who TMZ is we've broken so many stories have gotten things wrong too but they've gotten a lot of stuff right how did they get this one and well i did hear just about an hour ago that they were actually going to do a story on koby and this basketball league in his daughter her so they were sort of in the general vicinity but still when it's TMZ you're thinking act could be wrong you're not totally sure you you know so then the l a TV station the local affiliate i think it was the ABC affiliate they were the next to sort of put it out there and interest in confirm it but still for the first thirty minutes of this thing it wasn't on ESPN and it wasn't on the crawl it wasn't on CNN MSNBC fox news networks there was no crawl there was no anything so you are thinking you know is it true you know or because even in this day and age aaron where sometimes the networks and the major newspapers are like the last ones to find out in sometimes it's because they're the they're the only ones that are going to make sure that it's completely confirmed in multiple sources true journalism rules all of that perhaps even waiting for next of kin to be notified lied but still when it finally showed up on television it made it sort of real you know even though i think at that point it was starting to become real and then we had at least in our our minimum of multiple reports that turned out to be completely inaccurate like rick fox former NBA player former laker mike wilbon was on radio with me this morning for a half an hour rick fox is one of kobe's very closest friends and for you know for solid thirty minutes rick fox had perished on the helicopter with them there was also the report that was really devastating and troubling deal with that all four of his daughters were on the helicopter but as it turned out it was koby it was his thirteen year old daughter jonah they called her g. g. seven others not part of kobe's family were on the plane including a legendary baseball coach from orange coast college in southern california john john altobelli the son of joe altobelli who was the manager for the orioles world series winner in nineteen eighty three and john l. tobel altobelli and his wife kerry and his daughter eliza who was teammates with kobi's daughter gianna that's why they were on the helicopter together because they are we're headed to a basketball game according to according to john altobelli brother ge- he would routinely fly with his daughter to attend games with kobe on kobe's helicopter was kobe's helicopter used it to get around everywhere for a long period of time there was an assistant and girls basketball coach named christina mouser who coached at a private school in l. a. a. k. through eight private schools she was on the helicopter and there were three others as well l. nine in total some of the details of the crash really started to come out late last night early this morning ESPN had an in-depth report about the crash the helicopter it was climbing at about twenty four hundred feet trying to make a turn before dove to the ground the the ESPN in story said that the pilot had only moments before he contacted air traffic controllers to say that he had begun to climb to go above a cloud layer it was a a heavy clouds in the area we know that whether now was certainly an issue and perhaps a factor in the crash the NTSB will eventually give us the cause of the crash but it was shortly after nine forty AM pacific time the helicopter turned for a third or fourth time i'm trying to climb to two thousand feet above sea level and then according to this report it descended and crashed into a hillside at about fourteen hundred feet and when it struck the ground the helicopters flying at about one hundred and eighty four miles per hour and descending at a rate of more than four thousand feet per minute the video we saw the video of all of the fire and the smoke on that hillside you know it's an awful sight regardless of who's involved but the fact that kobe bryant was on that flight at turned a local story a tragic local story into a worldwide story it was sort of sports pop culture colliding yesterday day in total and utter disbelief not just here in this country but around the world i had a friend of mine you know i'm sure like everybody you with your group of the friends that you text with and you communicate with texts are flying and one of my friends said bias you know and i said yes in in terms of the same level of shock for us but you know in in the comparison would be an athlete so strong so skilled you you know never thinking they almost look like they're nothing could happen to them but the reaction to kobe's death is worldwide lend biases mrs was more of a US reaction in kobe's death is huge china throughout europe throughout australia and new zealand in all around the world basketball is either the second most popular sport in the world behind soccer or at least the third behind soccer and cricket in i think i've been corrected on on this when i've said it's the second most popular sport in the world because cricket is super popular too but the NBA so huge and in some mhm cases as big in other areas of the world as it's almost as big as here kobe bryant wasn't perfect all right we know we know the story of colorado and nineteen year old hotel worker he was very different though i i remember having conversations about this many times when he spoke multiple languages fluently he lived much of his childhood in europe most of it in italy because his father was a professional basketball player as most of you know he he was very intelligent you know he's one of the great players of all time you know without a doubt but he was you know it it's when you you live outside of this country when you live internationally when you live in different places in different cultures you're you're exposed to a lot more than perhaps apps a lot of his contemporaries were growing up and it's one of the reasons in wilpon pointed this out on radio with me this morning it's one of the reasons that this is being taken console hard worldwide and why kobe was so popular in in places international even even more so than a lot of the others that preceded him including michael and larry in magic it's because there was this sense that kobe was different he had lived life in europe in his formative years he spoke all all these different languages he was more sort of versatile as a human being you know and look i mean much of the world views america is very narrow is very self absorbed you know and it's it's it's not necessarily true do but that's the perception of it and you know kobe was viewed differently he was viewed much differently which is one of the reasons that he was so super popular around the world he's one of the great players of all time you know we've done this prior to his death and we will do this for years to come after his death the conversation about how great was he you know where does he rank well on a day like today i'm not one of these people that's gonna to say oh you can't talk about that or it's inappropriate to talk about this at this point any reaction that people have to me you know in emotions long as it's not personally personally attacking is is fine we all react in our own ways but it's fine to talk about his career today you know what i read on the inner we're not talking talking about rankings and stuff for not talking about this got to give it a few days whatever everybody i'm gonna talk about it right here.

I hate to say you're great anyway. The your grandparents don't say about the other stuff they say they say two. Maybe they say well good for you. My great thing awesome grants Geez. How many your grandparents were alive? Steve One we dumbest. I think a lot of unwanted red sox gear now. I'm one hundred percent down. We're talking about your GRANDPA. Are we talking about this. One of them yes just a grandfather. He's solid yeah yes horse. He's like eighty seven. UCLA next week. Yeah my stopping stopping. That's good it's coming up or no no no. He's not not healthy enough to do that. Boys are boys. You're going to be there so there's going to be two to Dexter Boys. Okay okay. Yes to answer rowdy thing we talked to. What Steve You and I all? We're up there in light of recent events. I maybe we'll still do it. The conditions are optimal. I'm good fine time. Pass that everyone more but that might have forgotten well short optics reality cheese so I mean you know it's sort of like hey do what you do here get in trouble. Well I'm Ford Ford but like I'm good at it. I always seem to find something but I don't want to fuck them shows over. Now what are we doing. I was I was just going to Load the PODCAST. Little Post you take. Yeah I mean I've I've actually got a bunch of work to do and then I was thinking I just sit remotely and pull video of you doing sessile radio a two page because a lot of fans won't be able to see that but I'll put the video up so we can put like fifteen twenty minute videos from honest I would like. Don't be afraid of putting out the videos of us talking about Kobe Bryant. I mean because I think you know I would say don't isolate do whatever you want but I mean part of the afraid well because I think people are going to react to it negatively I. I'm letting you know I don't care if you don't have the interns cut the show today. Yes I think we actually hamill really like. "Moment she wakes up and looks at me seeming looking. I know it's okay all right. Nice Ah The hotel turbulent was it it was pretty it was. I was surprised. no-one panicked like what was that bad. It was turbulent enough that I thought someone would have gotten worried but we we stayed calm. I was fine but you play with smooth. Yeah very smooth. Although I hate. American Airlines sucks six ranch Rancho alert to the two small one time. They screwed me out of a ticket. We don't get him started. A long history goes way back with American Airlines had a smooth find another This is the cheapest ticket usually just fly jet blue but this was a crazy cheap ticket so delta was a compromise. My principles. Good excellent privacy. Steve all right so I mean I don't know I'll be curious reaction today. I mean I don't know we're just we just talk like we always do you. Maybe it'll be none it. We'll see what I mean. ooh My immediate thought is the fans are often like they listen to the show. Because they're like mind. Maybe we say you say things like this the reaction I got on twitter which suggests to me that maybe there are people listening. That will still say I saw people be like keep it. Classy them like what do you think I mean I saw a lot of that. Fuck do you think I'm going to say yeah. I don't know you too Dan some his great. Yeah it's hard I mean Jesus Christ what are we doing here. It's not like Keller died right then would celebrate right. Yeah that'd be worthy of celebration. Though as I pointed out in my sponsorship over the weekend the only mention of him now is read. That I'm doing so that's that's true. Someone's paying me to mention which seems fishy. Maybe we'll do that Hernandez thing tomorrow. I found this sort of interesting. Yeah I mean Blue problematic I would say I I watch any story. That's I'm getting these death. Threats is like always read cry for attention always red flag. Believe or don't believe just have co I did watch the documentary and I just found that sort of man you know everything about the case. Then it's there's some things I didn't expect them to have a kid who he was sexually active with allegedly. I didn't expect it stuff like that father really. I don't like what do we do. is we go. He's a meathead but now he accepts him. They the prison phone calls are interesting. In what way which is interesting to hear Hernandez Hernandez talked to his wife and his mom and everything. I thought you meant suspicious. That was interesting just to hear him. Talk Harry Potter Books and talking to this kid. Yes that's correct. That's a horrible human being like I didn't care when he died right you know I didn't. I'm surprised you enjoyed getting death threats after that. Where other shows you guys basically Michelle Carter Him? Yeah it's weird we don't Yeah Michelle coming down this week Mike. You'll see wondering around the hotel But Yeah we'll get to that. Oh one of the thing I got to say is I was surprised. Sea Turtle boy are fraternal boy piling on this Washington Post reporter to really. Yeah he did the whole story about how how he liked Kobe. Issue with her and shame on this woman basically from like what the fuck that is surprise her two boys now like shaming journalist journalist for raising legitimate questions. I maybe there's something everyone is like. This isn't was saying maybe not the day he maybe today you should do that tomorrow. Would happen today. There was this woman tweets. Today they had the same problem. Yeah tomorrow same problem. You're right to Chirac. Maybe blame again. There's a reason that you didn't tweet it out. There's a reason tonight and everyone was pretty shocked. Yesterday I agree but let's say let's say some rape victim came out today and had video saying. Why are you celebrating this man people schindler? I'm on twitter right. That's true nuts to me. I don't know I don't think I was really shocked yesterday. I was like Oh Kobe. But you're not human. Being I was shocked talked and I don't know probably I probably watched him play five minutes of basketball. Maybe we'll you shocked in Princeton. No junkie loves seem. That's this would be a great funeral. The goto it's true. I'm GONNA get invited. This'll be a big one for you shopping or something. I would have missed the last death that shocked me. I can't I don't know you know. Death comes off work so as my Benneton him doing me. Ah You'd never shocked by dying. No I can't think I don't think so really. She's kind of sat there like oh he died. I don't know most of my close deaths have been a little bit predictable a few days before this person I see a famous person dies of not like cheap. It's actually a good point that weird way like so with your sister-in-law like when People Koby Bryant is God bless him and his daughter when the people say it makes you appreciate life. It's kind of. I'm pretty sure we know that. Like it's he's he's Stevens kind of looking at it right but I I agree what I'm saying is like I don't know why I was shot to me. It's always wasn't Holy Shit. It's always but yet people die every day in a helicopter wisey different. So you're right like intellectually right right but I I have to admit that was like holy fuck and I thought I somebody randomly tweet like this must be a bullshit. I clicked on my so I was a real TMZ. I was like Oh shit while they're not wrong I'm sure they're not wrong. Because people like the people are shifting over teams. Like you're you're fuck. You reported this wrong link. But they're always right about this stuff. I didn't know what was going on. Because just couldn't you say words. He just slid Jim. Murray what does everyone reacting to someone. Say words loser. I mean he's the greatest father of government lived. How would he know that take you? Wouldn't he just kept saying all day goes on. I'm just a Kobe. Guy Man on growth wonderful player terrific player shaken up great one of the greatest. I think I put him seventh right. That's controversial yes especially the date you should say two or three yes. They should retire number every sport. She retires number number and no one should have twenty four volts. Never play basketball again. Great wonderful but I don't know I don't know but it's you're yeah. I was thinking about that. It'd be like if Princess Diana died. Twitter you know. Yeah it was like people were just biggest one said Michael Jackson but I would say also Michael Jackson. All the Michael Jackson was weird like death. There was always a he was so skinny and he was just fucked up. We talked about Kobe. There was a lot more of that with Michael Jackson. Yes a lot a lot more accusations. Sure Michael Jackson died today. Those were a long time ago. I do think it'd be a lot of people getting mad at people for saying. Hey Ray kids I mean. He's filled up the staple center. I wake so right you are you a hundred percent correct. They'll fill up the stable centre for Kobe's wake they'll do something there. I'm sure yeah they'll sell it. Wake you should go to St. That seems like it's going to be star studded. So you're not going to the funeral matter WASCO. That seems like a good Robinson move. I haven't found one yet. I mean I gotta find I gotTa find a week and a half away. I mean plenty of time. Usually it's a couple of days since the when you get into hunting window you know. Why don't you a couple of calls some hospices up there you know? Just see what's his anyone who's close. Yeah just like Zambia week away seven seven hundred But you should bring some of the book you TJ hovered. Some of the boys go out for a funeral. You know you can them in the fan from there there. We go the casket side here are you. It's amazing to think that we are going to be a model Wasco in whatever eleven days. I don't remember that well this. We're ready though you're good. Yeah we're good. You feel good. Yeah I'm more ready for that. I dreaded coming down here mother Ford too much more than this. This this actually is fine. The.

"Morning who research Washington Post believe victims and there were like twelve stories tall stories where it's all believe the victim the victim don't if you shame victims. It'll be harder for them. Which I which I do believe yes? I'm listening I don't know if I told you three episodes there's been three episodes so far this new podcast Jason Cosby which is excellent. It's fucking unbelievable. It's it's an La Times podcast. I would tell anybody listened to it and you forget the horrors of these women went through. I mean it's unbelievable and this woman is as you know talking about somebody. Who's you know who he believes? Raped somebody or at least links to a story that thinks that the guy that the very possibly rape someone she took some shit on social media. Yeah now some people are saying she got suspended because she took pictures of the email sent to her tweeted those out. That's a no no. That's some people are saying. Alan got what happened. They took such a beating on social media. The Washington Post is liberal organization. Suspended a woman for tweeting out. A story really meant to protect attacked a victim of rape. Right she suspended for that and wh- I don't even understand what the logic is because it took some shit shit as opposed to just letting it blow blow blow. You get what I'm more fascinated by. What what did they say? How do they explain spending hers when people explain it they? Just it's it's crazy you know doesn't your problem. You have okay with that Steve. No Steven Portnoy should suspend me for today for saying this. No not at all. I don't I don't think she should be suspended. Ended but I can see if you're the social media editor and someone brings disrepute or a bad social media buzz to your website to your platform. I mean I can see you being pissed just off about it. Yeah but I don't think I don't think she did anything wrong. Didn't even put her own spin on it and say but by by doing that you are putting right. I mean you're I understand she but by the way so. She thinks she thinks Kobe. Bryant's a bad guy who gives a shit and not even that she's doing well we didn't say just remember. This happened happened also but not really. Because now. If you've done that and Impune Edmund better off she said look like you know hey he was a great player. I understand why people upset. But let's remember let's take a look at the whole picture while we mourn the death of him and his daughter. I'm okay but but that being said or do what she did. I don't find that you wouldn't spend it's probably right but now we're suspending people for tweeting stories. Yeah I guess it's my job. I guess I was GonNa say we'll be fired eventually. But that's that's what they I guess they are saying that it would create legal issues for her tweeting out the hate mail that she got. I could see that how for somebody says outing outing. Is it some sort of confidentiality with your subscriber. Maybe I don't know I have no. I'm not sure I think it was It was just sir. If someone says you an email you can tweet at a screen shot of it especially if they say you know die fucking count. Yeah I mean yeah. And that's I mean so. She was shamed I'm seeing this yesterday. Seeing people shaming this woman Colorado saying that she was a whore saying that she's won the money saying that she wanted it and I'm like well what are we. Where are we trust back like thirty or forty years ago? Twenty Gua what caused me. Say they were afraid they were terrified. They could do anything they were blocked this Anat. Nothing was like we're now. We're doing this again. Like you know. Great player it seems like a great dad. It's Michaela great second half of his life. He did any horrendous thing. One night it's very important especially today's world and we're paying more attention to it than ever they want to ignore it because you think he's really cool and you also forget that that woman in Colorado had to spend a day of everyone talking about what a hero. It's I mean I I I just have a lot of this. Your worship is like weird. It's weird when it's I mean it's it's what's this happens. Yesterday I was having a tough time with it. I I understand. People are emotional but I mean some of these stories. Holy Fuck I mean you know the plachy won the Tarasov one. Those are just the beginning. Barstool Mike do what are we doing. This is Jack Max tweets yesterday. No a father and daughter's bond is so special with a picture of Kobe. His daughter the video of Kobe and Johnny Jonah at at the nets game man I need a cherish those in my life more life is so precious Hashtag. Rip tweet. So I'm surprised maybe trying to fly. Yeah but I mean that's fine fine like whatever I mean. It's it's very sad like it. Seems like he really loved his kids. I have no doubt about that. It's Harper I feel so bad for other kids it's too fucking fucking. SISTER IS DEAD IN THEIR DAD's dead. That's fucking awful. Their lives are fucking ruined. If you have ten billion dollars trust me. I've got a lot of money. I Para Dead Bums uh-huh me on every day and I'm forty five years old. I mean these poor people. It's awful awful awful off saying is to ignore that is dangerous and sets a very dangerous. There's precedent that's all hero worship. It's we've seen it you've worship heroes and they're allowed to do stuff that other people can't do that's all so in this with skits whitewashed and looked over. I think it's super dangerous. Yeah you know and I think it's funny. Everyone's going to ignore you saying of course which is going to be all day Ahah fuck you. I can't believe you react to come on the place down for people and I'll say well. Okay we how about this and ignored it and we know that but I know that but I don't care fine I mean I just think it's I think it's part of the story. So what's the headline for the podcast. Accused rapist dies helicopter crash. I mean okay so it is. It's actually sort of complicated story. I understand that in and I understand you know this is the way it is when Jim Brown dies in a couple of years. No one's GonNa talk about the fact. He threw his girlfriend off the fourth floor of an apartment building. beat up other women. That's not going to be because you know why timing because after fifty years ago it happened fifty years ago. Even the way you just I I would have no problem with someone. tweeting out like Kobe live too complicated life but all my interactions with them were amazing. He seemed to be a great father Blah Blah Blah and. It's very tragic. They say that I have no problem but people are afraid though. I listen to Simmons yesterday. Did like a podcast like a half an hour about. Kobe needs talking about his life. Together and that stuff happened in Colorado and then use the MVP PM like why can't you talk about it. Why why can't you I really? I think you can even say you didn't think it happened. I think there's just something fundamental and people born human beings that just don't WanNa Talk Shit about dead people also today or if no party Weinstein died today. Dieter I'm thinking about anybody I don't. I don't me not to speak ill of the dead paternal did have one of the all-time great eulogies on sportscenter. When he died? Did you remember how Matt Millen boy. He's Joe Paterno died of this this and this but most of all Joe Paterno died of a broken car. Yes yes but you think if you think if Lucy today that people wouldn't talk shit I it'd it'd be selves not even snoop question. Yeah I'm saying people would talk shit but I think that your basic but dies on Huffington. Post it Steve. This guy is like a God like he's looked at stand that but this is something that is kind of uncomfortable about speaking ill of the dead ties as you know. I I think that going back. Thousands of years fiftieth time seems like a great father seemed like a good person last half of his life or whatever. It was a good person before that I think that for one night I believe looking at the evidence that he committed sexual assault and hotel room and Colorado. Also I think a really good dad and it's also too bad that he died it's awful. His daughter died. Why can't you say what? Why can't you say those things I mean you can but why is it? Why is it even controversial? I think it's controversial. If you don't address it did it. Did you see Gary Tanguay tweet. He deleted it but he did leave. I think so. Here's a bad guy off the corey said. I do not approve of Kobe. Bryant's life off the the court but on the court he was one hell of a player or something like why would you delete that. I don't know I think he should say like someone's GonNa get fired for tweeting today or something like tweeting. What what fax I guess? Yeah I mean these are so so if someone who had a real job tweet what fear did maybe gone sure. Yeah sure but I mean look. I'm not saying like again. I'm celebrating his death. I'm not I'm not but I think you. GotTa you gotTa bring it up when you talk about the whole thing and by the way I think the other side has been fairly represented in this conversation the phrase so I think if you have a sliver of conversation with the other stuff I feel like that's fair I feel the other side is is been heard you know I can only imagine barstool radio sounds like today I mean they're going to be in mourning over that's when I got a lot of his not not now Mike what's the point of this right now. There's no there's no as if I'm supposed to like take a week off. What's the point of praising him right like what's the point of any of it? Yeah the point. What's the point of saying that you whoa plenty of any of it? Well the at least the people on twitter dealt with would say that you and I and Steve or doing the show today to try and be edgy and talk about Kobe the opposite of however starting same stuff. That hasn't been fucking guy I don't I don't don't wish wish death on him. You just he just like I said did something really awful in my opinion by the way you may not have done it but I think he did it. I've I've looked at. I've read spent some time with it. Oh go buy some yellow purple flowers. And that'll prove their severi. People like badgering people for not for cancer. The Grammy's and cancelled games in them. We're doing here like you know. KFC Bank is the greatest tragedy in American sports history. I'm like well he's going to be in that Oscars tribute for sure. He's going to be a big part of that. Sure I mean yeah. They won an Oscar right in the middle of the METOO. Stuff so I don't know he rehabilitate his image really well but again awful timing obviously the end of his life. Great timing to do the terrible thing that I think he did again if he did a year ago today we would not be. We would not be having this conversation. No so because it happened fifteen years ago to the fifteen months ago. We pretend it didn't happen. Got It and people who wrote things in the past can now triumph whitewashing unless I have in my hands them on the radio with them and then we'll point come out. It will be very uncomfortable. Four to be interesting. I mean any Any shirts you'll be wearing while you're on that I do think today like I mean kids died shirt. Today is the field right for that now. I think that seems reasonable. I'm a gentleman. Do the best pro. Is there anything else. I'm missing on that story or no. Now I don't think so I mean there's the The anchor WHO's.

"Lakers magic sauce you grew the magic sauce and you got drafted to Charlotte. And what was your first reaction to her and saw that Dan you hear the Leykis purpose it well. I knew it was going on there. There was a trade in works right and so when I got drafted good representation he knows and so I get you know get drafted into the phone with the GM of the team that drafted and also get on the phone with the Charlotte. Gm He's just tells me what's going on by my media front and he goes well. It's a good thing trae and you can use you anyway mother. Okay Okay and so that's what happened on draft night so I was already. I was already triggered AMMO. I was triggered. I was reading Jim like fuck the media trying to try yeah yeah. What'd you telling me to tell okay all right. Okay you go on to a team. That's they are raised screaming like with so much talent on this team. They should be a championship team. You go onto team straight out of high school. You know I goyo over to go straight out of high school and its press. You've got eighty Jones Nick van next shock. You got all these guys this in front of you and you come come out with the total confidence of opposed to play on this level well. Here's the thing is probably good for me to play against those top players zero all stars stars playing against them every day in practice iron sharpens iron yeah the flip side of that is going to a team in which I play immediately right and all these stuff the individual stuff that people talk about the end of the career the numbers and all that stuff would be much better and he's probably be hiring also but going to the Lakers complain behind Eddie Jones and Nick Benzel taught me a lot. Barscott was were watching kind of starting to figure things out a little bit made practice very very competitive and I had to do a lot had to try to perfect damn floor because if I made a mistake coach Zhang meow Zo understanding what that feels feels like every day in practice has got to be a war because I gotta prove that I deserve the play. I deserve to be here every play matters and so. They're raised me that we was because I was taught like that too like if you WanNa play you WanNa play during Game Day. You show it in practice. Yeah man listen our vets will come to practice. They wouldn't want practice real back to back up. Whatever immune deficiency say not off problem all the scrimmage right now in all this ball to talking and we withdraw crazy but you know we were just young and you know wanted to prove ourselves and you were in the way when you decided to go out of high school. Did you think about college like was college that she was going to go to and yeah it was it was tough for me because I went through a whole oh process of of thinking it through trying to think through as clearly as could right and like you know my two top schools were Duke in North Carolina home and then trying to figure out why in coach K. Reputation for letting us play at the time Grant Hill was the player that was there and you know he was the spread the floor rant screen roles and he's kind of ahead of its time yeah US running the game with Duke with a spread offense and saying do you want to do the same with me and then on the flip side of that Carolina and and Dean Smith didn't do they the opposite he had a system yet structure but his players came off fundamentally sound and ready for basketball those those were the two teams and Dean Smith. Stop recruiting He sent me a letter and said listen everybody. I talk to seem to think you're GONNA go pro. Don't WanNa waste your time. You know best of luck if you if you change your mind just know this could be a home for you. They told you going to be a lottery. Pick wasn't really sure because I always always like the guard. The come out of high school hadn't been you know what I mean. It was like guards can can't do that. Sort of thanks of an air is up in the air by by the difference of when you came in straight out of high school you went into a League annual team. Grown men got kids families and all of that as opposed to now now. You know these guys come in nineteen. Whatever they got plenty of guys an age group everybody around the same talk about how different how different how difficult that was for you come near literally at eighteen and a real grown man. I everybody say when you get to the NBA unit grow mentally but right now. It's more of a a young man's league like when you came true grown man yeah well now. It's like college just a young go to class Brian. Level back then it was true Roman. Oh man and I think it was positives and negatives to that. The negatives relate to any of them right there things that they could do a team that I couldn't do. you go out to a to a certain club as a team. Go to a bar a team. I can't go legally can't go like us it. It was it was hard and I think that actually I had nothing to do. So what am I going to do. I'm going to play basketball basketball so I think that's we're not I think about it some the my behavior originated from and so I got into that habit so even when I became legal. I still wasn't going to hanging out team because I was so condition. Listen to focus on one thing and one thing so speaking on that. I've talked to my boys and everybody's about this. I I played in. La For four years I've never seen can you anywhere other than the state. I don't know how do how it had by so much. He will proceed like nine. I love how you the Black Bruce Wayne. He takes helicopter well. I I was obsessive Bro. I was really obsessive about this game to me. Everything was competitive advantage as well. I didn't want to be around guys. You know see see meow no one. I'm not working. I don't want that you know and I was really really about that life. I was always going at it and then to know what I'm doing. Now I had to prepare for early. Twenty s started thinking about Oh. I got to think about what comes at the end a writing. I know it was GONNA be films and novels and all that sort of stuff but I knew it was going to be something something around writing so I had to practice that when I was in playing basketball spending time with my wife Family I was writing. I didn't have time to be going out and doing stuff not to say I. I didn't do it but right at one one point US right reps too I was. I was actually helped me a lot because it helped me with assemblies metaphors. I you know with the creative writing aspect of it and being able to say things in a condensed format. How can you say a lot in in one bar one boy how can you minimize the Ark of which trying to tell helped me a lot and gives them by going through this story which you and like the rhythm of of the words by just like us like all the rest of the east coast do they all have fairly sign aw Philadelphia's you know certainly Neo ragging Philadelphia. We believe are better than anybody from anywhere right so it's a little bit of that too but like at the time. I didn't understand what it was that I was learning but in looking back it certainly because podcast show for example like the Pune. He's he's right. When you listen to the show there's a lot of harmony and rhythm even in the back and forth dialogue between characters. There's a certain rhythm that you that the ear has to be in tumor and that just comes from the music. So what made you start. The journeys talk about that the podcast a lot of your stuff in the content. I liked the fact that is geared toward the kids in trying to help him learn and just getting them especially with the books man 'cause my my fifteen euro he he's he's a big reader in like he wanted the wisdom. Dr Books this man. He wants a new book so like for him. It's something like oh he's for real like a kid has high you know reading IQ in high reading level and he he's originally from La so Kobe's you already know like Yo. I gotta get the book and then now you heard about this book so his dope to see how you you inspiring kids and that man of like that they want to go get the book. It's like you know every course shoes come out with a Ball Jersey but like the book is a whole different different lane inspiring kids. What made you go that the rich the kids are future console like how can I take information that I've learned my twenty years of playing and before that in still at down to teach kids at an early age teaching these things and nine ten years old how to deal with pressure how to do things I sorta thanks thanks. How can I distill these messages down at an early age that these kids grow up with the Lego and the pianist was something that was just finally. I don't see any shows for children anymore. That are fun. So have you showed. Oh that's for kids. Involves animals enough of the dam had them in here about a damn talking chicken anymore. I'm done give me real kids kids dealing with real issues playing sports which is the greatest metaphor we have life learning from each other parents out of the get. The overbearing coaches out of there. Let the kids just hang out and trash talk each other and learn learn that confidence and you had a bunch of teammates all star team as hall of fame teammate. What teammate that you took took something from that stuck with you for your career. A couple things one was more tactical in nature which was Eddie Jones and he taught me how to chase guards around screens off the ball so I kept getting hit screens on the gloves kind of shadow. He was excited. He was great. He trailed behind you trail behind outside shoulder get around to pick. He body up to his slide right through that. Oh Yeah taught me that that helped me out a lot and I use that forever Gary Payton as well taught me how to get through screens on on the ball those things yeah because like you know getting hit with ball screens is like the worst feeling for guard when Your Garden Wall and so he taught me how to move up into to the ball handler make yourself thin and then slide through screen those the two things that I take the you think like our era was so competitive that we weren't given no secrets. Chris out like this era is like you know. Also we always we never got a chance to sit out have conversation conversation. We joke that we were so competitive but it always was the respect factor that I grew up in an era where you just play a level basketball higher than yours and that's how you work going again. I never was taught how to come from the hood. I never was taught how to go on. Jimmy put the work in on you. GotTa put Your Weight Room Work into like I got to the League again. I want to go into the room playing eighty two games on my body's breaking sure on down the Ho Ho like what you what was the I had some really good mentors information was in Goslin share information generally but if you ask they just may especially if they know you're cut from the same cloth. GP GP me he went on and on on and he loves and we were playing may face them in the playoffs right but he was still sharing information because of the respect factor of furthering game. It's always there. You might win share information with nobody you know but he did with me because knows. I'm about their life and so when I had those mentors giving me guidance you you know Jerry West is agreements will remind list goes on and on and on man I agree guidance. You just saw this. I looked at what they could do and I was like I can do it too. That's the worst thing will work harder than they did and see why. I've got drafted right. We always dard one the first one I once alone Mike. I'm like do the biggest comparison I give people. When I I had to start checking I remember movie love and basketball right and she's like like Gardner. Grill this out like that's a lie. I had that feeling with like two. Maybe three different people the first time I got it called transition. You know you get caught and j running down your back. You transfer being.
