"On campus this fall and shifting classes online in the face of the cove in 19 pandemic. Politics Reporter Guy Mars, Roddy says the changes could have a big impact on the college student vote this November. In 2018 Kyle Shoals and the college Republicans of Cal Poly Pomona Easter valet were caught up in the blue Wave. We got our butts kicked, Democrats captured a handful of local congressional seats. Including the 39th District, which includes the Pomona Valley and northern Orange County. That didn't go very well in 2020 shows. His group was planning to campaign for Republican Young Kim, who's facing Democratic Congressman Gilles Narrows in a rematch from the 2018 midterms. Then in March, the pandemic hit campus is closed and students were scattered. Shoal says his group didn't meet for the rest of the semester, and their plans for the fall are up in the air. It's going to be pretty bad, to be honest, we're not going to be able to door knock meaning less contact with voters in that same congressional district. Andrew Levy leads the college Democrats of Cal State Fullerton. We plan on having a lot of people go and phone bank In canvas in addition to that, But once Kovac 19 hit, it was just kind of a bummer. Getting college students. The vote can already be difficult for one. They move around a lot, and the pandemic will keep many students away from campus in the fall. It's AH, you know, very transient population as Faras moving apartment to apartment to apartment to apartment to dorm to apartment back home. That's Jody Balm, a political science professor at Fullerton College. California is planning to male voters of balance and college students with shifting addresses could be hard to reach. And so we do want to make sure that people update their registration. The college vote is especially a concern in the 39th Congressional District. Home to a huge student population at Cal State Fullerton, Mount San Antonio College, Cal Poly Pomona and Fuller's in college students aren't voting in the district or not voting at all. It could mean thousands of fewer votes and competitive Orange County races for the state Legislature in Congress. So students are adapting their get out the vote strategy to the age of virtual learning. Obviously, we can't do any of our usual in person tactics, like waving his students as they walk to class to help them register to vote. That student Nick Ronnie, the board chair of CalPERS students, a group registering classmates and encouraging them to vote, But we can hop into zoom lectures. To make announcements, so really, just a lot of the same tactics that we would do in person. We've just switched to a virtual model..

"Yeah, my constituents want us to work with Russia where we can an American people want us to work where we can rather than this unrelenting hostility and push towards putting Russia in the United States in conflict Harley, Rueda hopes to become the first democrat ever to win the forty eighth. And you know what we, the people are going to not only flip the forty eighth district, but we are going to wash it process country, a Blue Wave for all of America. Thank you. And in the forty fifth district Republican, Mimi Walters is seeking her third term. I think that the American public has seen what congress has accomplished. Look at more people today have money more money in their pocket. Jobs are being created. We have higher wages Wolters opponent democrat Katie. Porter. Tout's endorsements from progressive senators, come la- Harris and Elizabeth Warren, her former professor, we have multinational corporations in this country that before this tax Bill were paying zero and my opponent. Mimi Walters voted for this tax Bill, which is gonna fall, particularly heavily on families in her own district in the forty fifth district in Orange County, Orange County went for Hillary Clinton in two thousand sixteen the first time that a democrat won the county since FDR. But that doesn't mean it's turning blue for good. Jody Boma is a political science professor at Fullerton college in Orange County since she thinks first of all, we're still a Republican county. We're becoming less Republican as old white guys die. And as the young people are. Much more diverse eighteen year olds in Orange County are fifty percent Latino. So those demographics are shifting. But we went for Clinton because people didn't like Trump not because Republicans in Orange County suddenly found love for Hillary Clinton. And what did they think about Trump now? So a number of people who didn't like him have come around partially because they didn't have another choice. I think one of the reasons that Republicans in Orange County didn't like Trump was because they didn't like Schwarzenegger and they had had that experience of an outsider who said that he could clean up the capital and didn't understand the government and failed pretty spectacularly in getting what Republicans want it. So I think it was just that they had had experience that a lot of Republicans across the country hadn't had what Orange County think of President Obama. So certainly the Republicans didn't like him and spent eight years hating him pretty vehemently, but. You know, it wasn't because they loved Hillary. So what are Republicans hoping to do in this upcoming election? So Republicans are hoping to hold on. You know, it's gonna come down to three things. It's a Trump, it's turnout and it's taxes. There are a lot of people who are supportive of Trump and now I guess I've got to add the cavenaugh factor of driving people to the polls for and against Cavanagh, but it's all going to come down to turnout for the Democrats to get all four of those seats. It's going to have to be the perfect wave. And I think the polls are really overestimating the Democrats, chances of getting all four, what did the Democrats need to do this November? So the Democrats need to turn out and they need to turn out in a really big way. I think the story of two thousand eighteen might not be the huge victories that the polls are predicting. But I think when we look back, I think two thousand eighteen is when the Democrats realized. That they needed a farm team that when you look at the four Democrats that are on the ballot for congress, not one of them has held elected office before, not one. The Republicans have all held elected office or are holding elected office. So they've got experience. They've got a ballot designation that people trust and right now, Orange County, I think almost every single city council has majority Republican. So we haven't seen the Democrats have a big farm team to choose from when they have this opportunity. Good to be back in California. Democrats may not have a farm team, but President Obama feel so confident about their prospects here that he visited last month for a campaign rally that was before the fight in Washington over the confirmation battle for now Justice, Brad, Kavanagh, outside a shopping center in Huntington beach, Orange County voter Laurie. He'd told us she's been trying to oust Republican members of congress here for years way before cavenaugh was in the picture opinion about him as a negative opinion, but he's not influencing my vote..

Jody Bama is skeptical that a Blue Wave is about to wash over the OC. There's still lots and lots of parts of Orange County that are rock ribbed Republicans who are not. Going to shift on that. In other words for the democrat to win here. It'll take a little luck. Although not quite as much as winning the lottery for the California report. I'm Scott Shafer in Orange County. Let's move on.
