"Welcome to kiss myths and mystery cyber host Kit crump. Today I'm doing a podcast on the mega quake the Pacific northwest past and future, and there will be a special note to those of you lived in the Pacific northwest at the end of this podcast. Subduction zone earthquakes have occurred every three hundred and fifty years since six hundred BC with the most recent taking place January twenty six, seventeen o, one evidence for the earlier quakes comes from core samples taken from the ocean floor. The seventeen o one quite caused several coastal regions of Washington and Oregon to drop sixty six feet massive coastal storms during one, thousand, nine, hundred, Ninety, seven, and ninety eight washed away tons of sand revealing hundreds of stumps. The remnants of Sitka spruce forest it is through a combination of carbon dating and the county. Of Rings the date of last cascade subduction zone or C. S. Z. quake took place. The Earth's surface is made up of seven major plates in many smaller ones. The smaller plates creator quakes for Short Durations Fourteen to forty five seconds that may reach nine point five on the Richter scale. They often take place of what is called. The fault line between plays the smaller plates, March Eleven, twenty eleven Japan experience us abduction zone quick that lasted more than four minutes at nine point one on the Richter scale, it was the fourth most powerful. Earthquake. In the world sense modern record taking began in one thousand, nine, hundred shake created a Su- Nami that reached a hundred and thirty three feet and moved to six miles inland. It move Japan's main island, of Honshu, eight feet and shifted the earth on its axis between four and ten inches. This wasn't earthquake created by the shifting of the Pacific Plate finally to help put earthquakes in perspective the. Loma prieta quake that interrupted the nineteen eighty nine world series in San. Francisco California lasted fifteen seconds the Great San Francisco earthquake of nineteen. Th Six was eight point six lashes forty five seconds, but Japan's greater earthquake of twenty eleven lasted over four minutes at nine point. One of the Richter scale based on data from Oregon see geographer Patrick or run and Usgs Alaska Science Center true mysteries of the. Pacific. Northwest will now tour the predicted minute by minute impact of cascade subduction zone earthquake on the Oregon coast after three, hundred, twelve years the C. S. Z. can no longer take the strain. Now this is conjecture. So hang in there with me after three hundred, twelve years CS. Can. No longer take the strain. It ruptures at a spot fifty, five miles west of Cannon Beach Oregon, and quickly spread. So long seven hundred miles of its length from British Columbia to Mendocino California the north. American plate slips fifty seven feet to the southwest sliding over the Juan de Fuca plate. But remember we're talking about a crust more than fifty miles deep. First Movement sends a pressure wave that travels through the Earth's crust thirteen, thousand miles an hour it will reach. The West Coast in ten seconds the leading edge will hit Oregon's Kennett beach and seaside thirty seconds slater. It reaches Portland Oregon in fifty seconds it has Seattle at nine point. One is what seismologist call a full rip me cities can withstand six point eight, quake lasting forty, five seconds but the difference between a forty second and four minute earthquake is like the difference between a head on collision at four miles an hour and forty miles an hour within three minutes as. A shaking continues the coast will drop from six to twenty five feet after five minutes. The worst is over for Portland and Seattle. It will have suffered from ground liquefication billets will collapse gas buyers will kerr citywide after six minutes, people seeking high ground to avoid the soon, Nami will be impeded by debris and driving. We'll be an impossibility at eight minutes to soon nominee will be about twenty five miles offshore. It approaches like an enormous high tide but flash floods speed. The leading edge will only be inches, but will increase to forty feet is predicted that the cascade subduction zone quake would create twice the impact lice the impact of Japan's great quake of two thousand eleven keep in mind that by the time you finish listening to this podcast, there will have been earthquakes all over the world, but mostly from the smaller plates I said at the beginning of this podcast will be a special note for those of you in the Pacific. Northwest. Has said that in the event of a quake, we would lose most of our overpasses both in Washington and Oregon creating huge problems with transporting food and supplies to various cities like Corvallis, where you gene and they would not go out and repair those roads. They would instead maintain what had no overpasses. This is kid chrome. Thanks for listening..

"So when we want to give the information about the planet H. about this guy a lot of the times we turn to government agencies to give us that information NASA will keep us informed about things in space that may be of note like asteroids which by the way another would pass by today it's almost like it's a normal thing I ever it's almost like we have we need a an asteroid report every week what's coming one going by I mean it just seems to me that you know it exes me that whether not NASA you know wants to tell us the truth that every that's a quote that's a question I've always wanted once again never straight answer any of it you know they want to be the authority on cataclysm they want to be the authority on catastrophe they want to control the information about the fate of the planet and and why we can be leader being told that a lot of these doomsayer profits are preachers and you know our our godly or whatever they're not right NASA's with NASA's right they're wrong in that kind of thing at all they have to do is write a press release and Bambi will believe them over like a climate expert like you because you're Cortez in stances for twelve years to live in everybody buys or her story and they don't and I don't even think about you know what could happen in and how you know how it can happen but when or what I'm only reporting this information because every day were alive were breathing and we haven't actually been hit by an asteroid we haven't been hit by something horrible okay I mean I'm still reporting this information because back on December twenty first twenty twelve the world didn't end that is the world's gonna end back then I I didn't say I I said look guys know the world is not good in a December twenty first twenty twelve we don't bother me about that whole thing is that you kind of thought to yourself what if you know what it whatever of a preacher says he says with conviction the world's going to end on may whatever what a jingle okay you cannot say but what if and even though I say right now because you Cortez or Bernie or whomever or the little girl from Sweden whatever they say about the twelve year thing I laughed at it now the man of the year I get older and things start looking very weird I start getting paranoid going well what if these non experts I probably wouldn't think that but I'm just saying what are these non experts are right what if you know because he Cortez secretly is a weather scientists and she's been fooling everybody with their stupidity or how about bill Nye the science guy what if he really is a science guy and not some Disney fied janitor they just happen to know how to see eight as equals MC squared you know that's what always bothers me what these guys are secretly weather experts in and we're supposed to pay attention to them you me for all we know you know little brother writes the farmers almanac you know it if you never know Joseph Caroline well you know I'm joking but still it is whole doomsday thing adding the new should be on the front page of every newspaper that these people are not experts but it won't be because it's good for business is good for that in the nightly news app analysts the scientists can all point their fingers at these born again Christian doomsayers or whoever but then if they go about a scientific approach of the say Hey we're scientists and we know more he's wearing a lab coat please stop listen to him we don't need a lab coat anymore it all you have to have this nice brown eyes and long black hair and I have to say is we're not gonna be around twelve years if we don't stop climate change it was like going she's so great and wonderful let's follow her and then comes the little girl how dare you wrote she's wonderful let's follow her little bangles well twelve years so we got some socialist you list that was to be I do that's all they do things here it's like it's like if you get that drives you crazy toppings are anyway this is the way it is but there's a lot of research that is being had right now and I gotta tell you I'm gonna become one of those guys are really come one of those so called experts tonight you're going to laugh at me because of what I'm saying but then again you're gonna take it very seriously because as I was doing the research today I thought to myself boy you know I love living in the great northwest I love living in the Pacific Northwest I love being close to the beaches I love being able to go into the mountains I love being able to go hunt big foot when I want I like the fact that maybe one day I'll stumble upon a parachute and a skeleton in two hundred fifty thousand dollars from DB Cooper but fat chance all I'm saying is living in the Pacific Northwest is a lot of stuff to talk about a lot of things to look at and so you know what's cool like DB Cooper what is cool like big foot or maybe the UFOs over the Puget Sound area you go yeah I'm happy to live in this place but then when you start talking about the end of the world you start talking about you know where would start well I'm being told by a number of people are sitting emails gonna be right here ground zero is going to be ground zero are we gonna be broadcasting from ground zero from what I get there is nothing more terrifying than knowing do you live in an area of the world where a potential disaster is in the making can it's even more chilling to realize that the potential disaster sounds like something that would be found in a science fiction novel something so unbelievable but if you warn people about it they would they would never believe you you think you're crazy hi and since I'm no expert you know you can write me off like you can write off you know my little Swedish girl a write off because you Cortez a write off Bernie Sanders or whoever you want to write off it's telling you that your world is ending in front of you I mean you don't have to be religious anymore to tell people the world's ending all you need is a lab coat all you need is to save it you got a political agenda people believe you I don't have a political agenda I just live in the Pacific Northwest I mean last month if you remember we kicked off our Halloween shows for the show we called monster monster monster monster the great old ones was the name of the show where we reported that there was some strange activity going on in the ocean some two hundred miles three hundred miles off the shores of Oregon they're also reports of many earthquakes up the coast in the first weeks of October and immediately the internet was buzzing with reports of the Cascadia subduction zone kicking off a major earthquake now terrifying to talk about that why because it would be a nine point or greater they're saying chances are you would hit central Oregon not where I am but then again it could if it does it would liquefy most of the city and most were I Matt would sink into sort of a watery muddy type of of this and that would be good however we don't know how far is a a six four twenty four for building would go into a sinkhole but we could definitely see if there's a huge problem with an earthquake but another concern that was being talked about during that time in in in the casket is only still having with which we had an earthquake in no one in Mount Rainier and mountaineers to blow because it's a volcano Seattle be bye bye a traffic problem will be ending pretty soon if that happened because of traffic problems horrible in Seattle but ID stop if there was a huge mountain exploded the middle the city but you know you don't want to think about that because you think well that's just horrible but they have bouncy Helen's the days basically blew it stack back in the nineteen eighties I mean it relatively speaking that's not too far away from where I am moving mileage wise or fifty miles out and the volcano idea really underground or the ones under water even interruption of the actual seamount is been a a subject of many stories that deal with deep abyss fire and brimstone in strange this is going on some two hundred miles off the coast the actual seem out as a base so large it would cover the entire city of Austin Texas and although not the biggest submarine volcanic mount around the world the main magma reservoir is two thirds of the length of Manhattan the same with and taller than any building in New York the actual seamount currently sits atop this hot spot this hot area it also is a stride mid straddle the mid ocean ridge separating the Pacific plate to the west and the one D. Fuca plate to the east and both of those I'm moving apart and so we have these two forces that help make the axe you'll the most active submarine volcano in this region so far they've been three eruptions one in nineteen ninety eight to twenty eleven twenty fifteen and have been documents or actually documented evidence the thing that the B. B. occurred in this erupted many times before there has been any real incident involved here but recently they've been civic that they've been some peculiar events we have taken place in the region and it's put a lot of people even me into a paranoid state of mind eight seven seven seven three three one zero one one that's eight seven seven seven three three one zero one one what about to tell you tonight is going to gonna make you feel little on edge maybe not but it does it is going to affect you it's going to affect the entire world and it could happen right here in the Pacific Northwest could have even lower towards California all you people to bad mouth California you know what California will have its revenge yeah and you'd best be aware of what's going on because it's getting creepy.

going by I mean it just seems to me that you know it it affects me that whether not NASA you know wants to tell us the truth that every that's a quote that's a question I've always wanted once again never straight answer you have it you know they want to be the authority on cataclysm they wanna be the authority on catastrophe they want to control the information about the fate of the planet and and why we can be leader being told that a lot of these doomsayer profits are preachers and you know our our godly or whatever they're not right NASA's that NASA's right they're wrong you know I can't think at all they have to do is write a press release and Bambi will believe them over like a climate expert like you because you're Cortez in stances for twelve years to live in everybody buys or her story and they don't and I don't even think about you know what could happen in and how you know how it can happen but when or what I'm only reporting this information because every day were alive were breathing and we haven't actually been hit by an asteroid we haven't been hit by something horrible okay I mean I'm still reporting this information because back on December twenty first twenty twelve the world didn't end I didn't see the world's gonna end back then I I didn't say I I said look guys know the world is not good in a December twenty first twenty twelve we don't bother me about that whole thing is that you kind of thought to yourself what if you know what it whatever of a preacher says he says with conviction the world's going to end on may whatever what if you go okay you cannot sit but what if and even though I say right now because you Cortez or Bernie or whomever or the little girl from Sweden whatever they say about the twelve year thing I laughed at it now but Mandel today I get older and things start looking very weird I start getting paranoid going well what if these non experts I probably wouldn't think that but I'm just saying what are these non experts are right what if you know because a Cortez secretly is a weather scientist and she's been fooling everybody with their stupidity or how about bill Nye the science guy what if he really is a science guy and not some Disney fied janitor they just happen to know how to see eight as equals MC squared you know that's what always bothers me what these guys are secretly weather experts in and we're supposed to pay attention to them you know me for all we know you know little brother writes the farmers almanac you know it if you never know Joseph combine well you know I'm joking but still it is whole doomsday thing having the new should be on the front page of every newspaper that these people are not experts but it won't be because it's good for business is good for that in the nightly news that analysts the scientists can all point their fingers at these born again Christian doomsayers or whoever but then if they go about a scientific approach of the say Hey we're scientists and we know more he's wearing a lab coat please stop listen to him we don't need a lab coat anymore it all you have to have this nice brown eyes and long black hair and I have to say is we're not gonna be around twelve years if we don't stop climate change it was like going she's so great and wonderful let's follow her and then comes the little girl how dare you wrote she's wonderful let's follow her little bangles we have twelve yes it's only got guys some socialist you let's not let's be that's how they do things here it's like it's like if you did that drives you crazy toppings are anyway this is the way it is but there's a lot of research that is being had right now and I gotta tell you I'm gonna become one of those guys are really come one of those so called experts tonight you're going to laugh at me because of what I'm saying but then again you're gonna take it very seriously because as I was doing the research today I thought to myself boy you know I love living in the great northwest I love living in the Pacific Northwest I love being close to the beaches I love being able to go into the mountains I love being able to go hunt big foot when I want I like the fact that maybe one day I'll stumble upon a parachute and a skeleton in two hundred fifty thousand dollars from DB Cooper but fat chance all I'm saying is living in the Pacific Northwest is a lot of stuff to talk about a lot of things to look at and so you know what's cool like DB Cooper what is cool like big foot or maybe the UFOs over the Puget Sound area you go yeah I'm happy to live in this place but then when you start talking about the end of the world you start talking about you know where would start well I'm being told by a number of people are sitting emails gonna be right here ground zero is going to be ground zero are we gonna be broadcasting from ground zero from what I get there is nothing more terrifying than knowing do you live in an area of the world where a potential disaster is in the making Dan it's even more chilling to realize that the potential disaster sounds like something that would be found in a science fiction novel something so unbelievable but if you warn people about it they would they would never believe it the baby think you're crazy hi and since I'm no expert you know you can write me off like you can write off you know my little Swedish girl a write off because you Cortez a write off Bernie Sanders or whoever you want to write off it's telling you that your world is ending in front of you I mean you don't have to be religious anymore to help you with the world's "You know, people say necessity is the mother of invention. But that's not always true. Sometimes the mother of invention is advertising. Yeah. Or pure accident. How about ego maniacal delusion? Absolutely. Or just a desperate longing. To be cool. I'm Robert lamb, and I'm Joe McCormick. You're the host of the science podcasts stuff to blow your mind. And now we're branching off into the exploration of invention. Invention is the story of human history told one piece of technology at a time the things we made and how they made us invention publishes every Monday, listen and subscribe to invention on apple podcasts the iheartradio app or wherever you find your podcasts. Hey, I'm eve and welcome to this day in history class a show that uncovers history one day at a time. Today is January twenty six twenty nineteen. The day was January twenty six seventeen hundred. At about nine o'clock at night. A magnitude nine earthquake the Pacific northwest in North America. The Cascadia subduction zone. A plate boundary that extends from northern California to Bank Hoover island in British Columbia have ruptured. It broke at least one thousand kilometers or six hundred twenty one miles of the boundary between the wind Fuca plate in the North American plate. It only took about fifteen or twenty minutes for the wave to reach the coast of mirth America, causing massive destruction like studying landscape cited and the drowning of coastal forests. And while all that devastation was happening on the coast of mirth, America, the western half of the way with headed towards a pan. It reached the island ten hours later. This NAMI that struck the coast of Japan with devastating and well documented but in Cascadia history remained unwritten. Native stories were passed along through oral traditions. So much of that history is lost. But folklore from the region at the time does allude to huge earthquake massive flooding. Because information can have traveled anywhere near as fast. As it. Does today back then nobody linked to earthquake in North America to sue NAMI in Japan until centuries later when a size Malla just put the pieces together in a nineteen Ninety-six article in the journal nature. Before that, the seventeen hundred soon NAMI in Japan was dubbed the orphan sue NAMI. Many other stories the native peoples told about the earthquakes to nominees can't be linked to the one in seventeen hundred specifically after all the region did have a considerable amount of seismic activity and ground shaking and flooding. We're motifs that showed up often in tribal stories, but there are some stories native peoples told that most likely point to the Bentson seventeen hundred for instance, there was a story that Agnes Matt's a member of tala tribe toll cultural anthropologist Cora DuBois in nineteen twenty nine. A grandmother had told her grandchildren to run to the top of a mountain as a wave came. And when the children looked back. They saw the water destroying everything. End in the nineteenth century, Billy balked, a leader of the Macau tribe. Talked about how water had receded from the NIA bay in Washington. Instead unle came back in submerging, quote, the whole of the Cape and infect the whole country except the mountains. So even though there isn't much recorded history from the period, and we can't be sure exactly what happened throughout the region when the earthquake struck we can't say without much doubt that it was disastrous. On the other side of the Pacific the soon NAMI that hit Japan went from the northeast to the southwest coast for anywhere from eight to ten hours. Flood waters and fires destroyed homes and Kula Gozansky crops were damaged and not Succi and into the storehouse moat in farm lamp, let it. These are just some of the recorded stories of what happened the day the soon. Nami strobe. Recordkeeping was impeccable in Japan and much of the population was literate all the written records, come from the island of high. Sue, we're the capital city ETA was which is Tokyo today. But even with all those records, the origin of the disaster was unknown. We're had the high waters come from. At the time the Japanese people knew that earthquakes could cause nominees but most of the people who wrote about it. They didn't call it a soon. Instead they called it things like flood in high tide. I mean, how could it have been a SU NAMI if the earth hadn't shook beforehand. For a long while geologist didn't really know that faults in the Pacific northwest could create quake so strong. They can ripple over to Japan. But in nineteen sixty Ninomiya Saburo linked early earthquakes in Japan to Peru until I and by the nineteen eighties. Researchers were figuring out that the ghost forest in layers. They observed in the region where the result of an earthquake. Over the years. Scientists managed to narrow the formation day of the ghost forest easing radiocarbon dating and tree rings by nineteen eighty-seven geologist Brian at water and grad student, David Yamaguchi had determined that. An earthquake happened sometime between August sixteen ninety nine in may seventeen hundred. But the nineteen Ninety-six journal article wasn't the end of the research about earthquakes in the Cascadia subduction zone. The thing is an earthquake happens in Cascadia about once every two hundred and forty three years in the likelihood of a major earthquake occurring in Cascadia in the next half century is about one in three. The question now is how to prepare for the inevitable. I'm Jeff coat in. Hopefully, you know, a little more today about history than you did yesterday. If you want to know more about the Cascadia earthquake in Japanese NAMI of seventeen hundred listen to the episode of stuffy missing history class called the orphan sue NAMI, you can subscribe to this day in history class when apple podcasts the iheartradio app or wherever you get your podcasts.
