"This room. You can You know you can hydrate your dead pet and nail into the wall and never forget it. I mean, decisions. Ridiculous stuff. Like I said Ron. You know you can't do it Infomercial here. We got wheels. 8 to 10 minutes. You can't do two dozen dehydrator. So he pinned my ears back these rock appeal And who? The alibi And he just just left and I took all but three dehydrator and hid them backstage was perfect and what he was when he walked out if looks could have killed Need to drop me right there. He said that he was alive on the air. What did he do? He went with it. And it's sold out because we focused on your key. Fruit roll ups and, uh, drying vegetables. Making dehydrated vegetables. Those are the three primary. I looked it up. Those are the three primary uses for a dehydrator and it's sold out. And at the end, he said, he said, Well, why didn't you follow my instructions? And I said Cuba, read the tales of rare rabbit and he looked at me kind of strange. I said, Ron, I was born in this fryer patch. I said We're not an infomercial. We gotta I said we're basically meatball surgery. Get in. Tell him what it does. Tell them what it does for them. How much is it calling now? Well, we're done. And he I guess nobody had ever questioned him before we became fast friends, fast friends for for decades. Yeah, that that that rotisserie sold something like eight million units. The most desperate and I'm so proud of that. It's a bit if if I ever put a reservation together that will be at the top of it. It's the most successful and commercial in history. Um, and he was he was inspired. Because he loved the rotisserie chickens from Costco. But they were 10 bucks. And if you bought a raw chicken, it was two bucks and he said, so I'm paying them $8. The rotisserie my chicken. Why couldn't so he bought a rotisserie and it didn't work. Did the chicken give out old dummy and oily And you said, Oh, it doesn't. It doesn't get hot enough. That's why the Costco chickens were so good because they had these powerful industrial Boilers that would do it, so he got together a partner who is a PhD engineer, and he said, I want to make a rotisserie that's hotter than the surface of mercury. Jeez, you know that that will that will double richest to read anything, and so they made the heating elements of a larger diameter. And that's why it worked like a champ. I still have my life and I guess for 17 years. Wow. Um they're built like a tank and that that thing was just his his real. So many claims to fame. But the rotisserie is the water. Well, it was a lot safer than the five and one turkey fryer, at least or so. It seemed to me. I I don't know about you, but I thought now here is an implement of utter destruction. I begged him. I pleaded with him. He had this idea for the turkey prior that would fry a turkey and olive oil. Because he kept telling me Olive oil is healthier. So you know me. I don't believe anybody. I looked it up and I checked with a doctor when you heat olive oil. It's a fact it's no better or no worse than corn oil or any other oil safflower or it doesn't matter what it's a fat. It's a fact it's not healthier, So okay, fine. But now you can do a turkey and it's only the size of a toaster. You've got to turn the turkey over and I said Ron, Deep fryers are over. They're done. They're done. Don't do it any simple. Should I do an air Fryer? I said, no. You're behind the curve on that one, too. I said those are out there. The market will be saturated by the time you had market find something else, But he insisted, And we did. It's his only I wouldn't call it a failure because we our butts off on that. But it didn't work again. It worked like a champ, but the infomercial didn't work. Well, I'll tell you what, to the delight of fire departments Coast to coast. This This was something that, you know. Talk about. Don't try this at home. But yeah, his his words. I remember when he had the bed, dramatic slice of tomato so thin. It only has one side. You know things like that just just lines that were nonsensical, But chop your onions without shedding a single tear and on and on it When he was he was part of the entertainment. He was willing to make himself a clown. And what was interesting is there were people who really thought That he was a clown, and I thought No, he's just a sharp businessman. He knows he's putting himself out. There was clown O Matic. He was He was something I mean, he was. He was one of the most successful vendors on Q V. C. He was banned from Q V C three times. Uh, they they said, that's it. He'll never be allowed the studio again. He's kind of he's kind of a bulldozer. Oh, yeah, I've A couple of times. One time in particular, I went to bat for him and I went to the president of the company. I said you're going to leave that money on the table. I said these are huge. These are huge. I think we can handle him. And he said, Well, he he buffaloes some of the host. I said Don't put them on with those hosts. What about with me? You know, I don't I don't suffer fools lightly at all. You know they help we will. We'll have we had killer airings. I mean, we would blow people out of the water with that stuff because we I could keep him And this sounds terrible because who the hell am I, But I could keep them in check. I could keep him focused in and we just go for the You know, all we want to do is tell as many of these as we possibly can. Oh, and you did. I mean, didn't he sell that company for like, I don't know about 15 years ago for something like over $50 million Well, that was the fifth time he sold it. Yes. Uh, remember the movie, Lassie? Come home. Yeah, Yeah, I'm cold. It was Ronco Come home would sell it to somebody. And they would default..

Retailers Change Up Black Friday Deals To Keep Shoppers Safe
"Many businesses did not make it to this black friday. Maybe you've seen them shuttered in your neighborhood but those that have endured until now may be in position for a big holiday shopping season though. It definitely not safe to push your way into a crowded store just about anything can be delivered to your door if it's a gift. Hopefully that is done discreetly. Npr retail correspondent alina. Seljuk is covering the story for us. Good morning good morning. What do retailers expect big picture across the board. I'll surveys are suggesting. The majority of americans plan to shop in store or online this week or next and forecasts suggest. Were actually in for a record setting holiday shopping season just address. I always get this question about black. Friday is a dead and every year. I come here and if you like declared dead and then get a bunch of annoyed messages from people who love not just want to say. It's just no longer at that obsession with this one single day of the year. You may have heard these ads weeks ago this year walmart. Turn black friday into deals for days. Starting saturday november seven this year targeted black friday deals all november. Actually sales began as far back as tober in some cases so a lot of people have already started their holiday shopping. And don't intend to stop okay so we should really think of it as black friday's or black friday sales holiday. This is mainly happening online. For safety reasons. I assume by far the vast majority do say they plan to shop online on their phone screens. Because the big thing that happened this year we got a lot of people becoming online converts for the first i and especially thinking things like grocery health and beauty products stuff that we used to have to see i will. Here's vivek pandya tracks online shopping at dobie digital insights about thirty one percent of consumers reporting that they rarely shopped online or had never shopped online before and covert pandemic was essentially a forcing function. And when you think about physical stores every year the international council of shopping centers does a shopper survey and this year even this group is reporting a big drop in the number of people who say they plan to physically go shopping but in that survey almost two thirds of respondents said they did plan to go shop at a physical store. It's a lot of people and stores are adjusting. You know they're requiring masks. They're counting customers again to limit crowds and they're drawing attention to the cleaning measures which like unglamorous thing stores usually like distract from. We'll now you've got you know sanitizers front and center however people shop. What are they shopping for. Classic stuff close. Get guard stores. Electron ix smart. Tv's home speakers that sort of thing for years. We watched this shift toward experiences rather than things this year. We're back to things you know until we can start jumping back into massages classes or whatnot and especially talking things for the home where we're spending all this time now. More holiday decorations to check out houses books and crafts to occupy time. My favorite hot for the cova time is apparently air. Fryers are big for all that comfort food. So many families are still struggling financially. We hear about that every day. They still seem to say they want to feel special. The wants to celebrate the national retail federation predicts on average. Shoppers are going to spend almost a thousand dollars gifts food decorations and other holiday things which is only a little bit less than last year when the economy looked extremely different leading. It's always a pleasure talking with you. thanks thank you.

"Figuring out whether business is eligible for full forgiveness, partial forgiveness or none at all can be complicated. Mark Fryer owns three restaurants in Vermont. Could you just describe what you serve and what the pop ups are like? The honeysuckle. It's a concept that uses food as the nucleus to explore various ideas of nuances of blackness in America specifically. And I say America specifically because. Black people in this country have. Quite quite quite the hurdle in our search identity in that many of us can't trace back our heritage. More than two grandparents ago and what a what tends to happen at least in my experience as a bike person, this country is that. People will ask me. Hey, where are you from? What is your nationality? But if I tell them that I'm just a black person, from Philadelphia, and that I'm American. That's kind of where the conversation stops. You know Africans and West Indians have a heritage. They have a flag Michael. tweet talks a lot about having a flag and his book, the cooking teen and having a flag like if you point towards the flag of Jamaica. What do you think of food? Wise? You think of oxtail. You think of rice and peas when you tell someone that you're an African American, most people only ever associate that with pain and then stereotypes. Under the American flag. So honeysuckle to me is. ME. Generating a flag for myself. It's not it's not just pain. Pain is pain as always there, but there were plenty of joys as well. You write poetry and you were to poem. Stop at around March fifteenth when when I moved to Philadelphia, but all the. Things that I was doing prior to this pandemic. Speaks to the African American community and I would like to spread that over several different. Avenues such as a grocer, a coffee space, and still do dinners, but have it be a community center. The idea in the past was to open honeysuckle downtown, but What I want to do now is bring down to hood like that's. I would love to see the economy spread outward into into the pockets of those who need it. If you look forward five or ten years. In take a best case scenario. What would you like to see happen as a result of what we're going through now? What would be the best case for you? In terms of community or the way people think about food and culture. Restaurants were never about food. And I think that people. Don't understand that restaurants were always about people people I that needed food. So if we can. Start looking at that again. You can make an air fryer better by put a coil over the food. They flooded because it works. It's not like it doesn't work. Yeah, I mean honestly they like most air fryer seem to kind of position themselves as like. Use less oil like you can use eighty percent less oil like the things, not sitting in oil. Which is fine like you know using someone covering something in oil for the most. Yeah views a healthy oil. It's fine. Are you talking about? Putting, it like like deep frying something is. I can't believe that deep frying thing is legal or not frowned upon in polite society right well deep fry I mean it kind of kind. Of American society that eighty percent of our food is is deep fried in oil well, just the good food. Yeah remember. We were roommates if we got a deep fryer. But made fish sticks. All right. To. There were four roommates and we had to have a roommate meeting about it even though you and I were. Allies on most things because we had a roommate that bought like floor pillows for my Kia, even though we could yeah, then tried to make us pay for all the floor pillows. We were aligned on that stuff. We were allies, but I had to like gingerly. Call you out on this this. That was fine, because then that gave you more credibility in the floor pillow situation exactly Oh man, we serve is like Tim Tim is not just a Tom Partisan look. The Cheapskate is in the house with some killer deals
"Are you on the hunt for a deal? We've got rick brighter the chiefs get himself on to talk about how to get the most bang for your buck. I'm Richard Chang. And this is your daily charge. What me a rick and Dave Johnson who co hosting a new cheapskate. Podcast FOR US fellows. Welcome Hi Roger. Hey how's it going all right? Let's let's get right into it. Tell me about your new show. What can we expect from the new cheapskate? Podcast right well. First of all talk about the name. It has called. Believe it or not that skate show and You Know David I have actually known each other for a lot of years and we tend to disagree about pretty much everything so you can expect a lot of very amusing arguments on the show. Yeah Rick and I wouldn't disagree Mike if he was white out stuff more seriously. This is the time when saving money a super important and we WANNA do a show that about smart ways to save money with packages. Because you don't want to give up technology because you know dollars type thing. That's a fantastic point. I mean that's why I wanted to talk about today to get a little bit of a a preview. Tease his show I wanted to get some sense. Of what the general buying guidelines right now especially with the economy crashing. People losing their jobs folks just being forced to tighten their belts. What are some some good smart tips for getting the most out of the deal right now right so my first step is going to be the same one I always share pandemic or not and that is to always use a cashback service for anything that you are buying online? I've written about these before and I've talked about a lot about them before. But these services are can really save you a lot And I'm talking about rackets in which used to be known as e Bates There's one called top cashback. If you do a lot of shopping on your phone you'll want to check out one called. Dash and just like you use a cash back credit card for the things that you buy these services. Sorta helped you to double dip a bit and can save you an extra two percent. Four percent. Eight percents at varies from store to store. But you just kinda crazy if you if you don't use one there's there's almost no downside and it's just it's little bits of extra savings that add up over time as you shop online and so by the end of ninety days which is when the cashback payoff happens. You can find yourself staring at a nice little chunk extra cash for my part. I'm going to say something that a lot of people probably already find pretty obvious but always always always saying no to the warranty extended warranties almost never a good value except there's one big exception that I have found out the root trial and error over. The years matters is right now especially with the pandemic people are buying more and more home exercise equipment right if you can't go to the gym people aren't going out running as much. Exercise EQUIPMENT BREAKS DOWN. Right here early if you don't buy the extended warranty on that you can really really run into problems. Downstream and I think rick had the same experience I have where we have bought exercise equipment and three months six months nine months later. It's broken and you lose the whole value of it so I found that the extended warranty exercise equipment and actually really work so surprising to no. I mean these are great. Jobs are there. Are there any other kinds of things that we should avoid or things? We shouldn't be doing when looking for deals around the Internet right. So I'll jump in and say that if you're shopping for Amazon gear and by which I mean like actual stuff that's made by Amazon kindles and echoes and things like that. Never ever pay full price for that stuff because Amazon puts these things on sale all the time and I mean like every four to six weeks you know kind of sometimes for no reason. Sometimes it's because we're coming up on a big holiday like a father's day or anything like that so if you're in the market for you know let's just say let's say a new echo speaker. Whatever at UC selling at the regular Amazon price. Just wait a little while because I guarantee you it will be on sale at some point in the near future and likewise I would say that we always kind of get objective. I think about getting something Shiny brand-new in the box that no human being has ever looked at or before but don't discount refurbished year re. I are great because you can get a dramatic discounts on buying something that's referred and if it's factory refurbished often you get the full warranty. The manufacturer would have given you on a new item anyway. So there's no downside shore somebody else has lick it before. But that's been cleaned up and so you're basically getting a new unit in all but name. Dave I never want to buy anything from you ever just. Just that's why I I don't know what the products law these at these. Tips are Super Handy. I think they're they're pretty general. I'm just curious if there are anything. Anything are doing differently now in our current situation that you might not have done you know prior to this. Probably the lockdown Prior to this whole pandemic of are there things now that we should be more aware of? I mean obviously the big thing is we can no longer rely on overnight shipping or even to today shipping for a lot of things. So you do kind of need to plan your purchases a little bit more than you used to. You know. Obviously if you're shopping for a gift for somebody for example you can't just wait until the last minute and expected it's GonNa arrive in a day or two ninety to budget out a week and sometimes even work. Yeah and for my part. I'm finding that you kind of have to look around at plated other than just Amazon. I definitely fall into the trap of. I used to buy everything I owned from one place and that was Amazon and I like the one stop shopping but I think increasingly these days unique could be open to checking. That's by checking target checking you know Walmart and you know smaller retailers as well because there there are deals to be found and there's inventory to be found so that's that's a really good point we're heading into the Memorial Day weekend usually Memorial Day's great time for sales but we obviously cannot go outside to two stores physical stores to find these deals. What are some of the best online deals? You're seeing well. This is a really good time of year or things that are like furniture bedding mattress related and in fact right now. I have a story up on. Cnn that's that's Memorial Day deal so you might wanNA check that out. I'm finding there are so many deals on things like mattresses and bedding that I can't fit them all story so there's hundreds of dollars off on any of that if you've made up your bed or you want a new piece of modular furniture for the living room. Definitely check that stuff out but there are tech fields to for example. The Novo has a of laptops on special right now and there's a lot of kitchen voice. I Love Kitchen Joyce You know whether the air fryers or ice cream makers or you you name it. And there's a lot of that stuff on specialists. Well all that said this is probably not a great time of year for things like game console. So I'm not seeing any deals on xboxes or playstations that might happen but keep in mind. We're in the run up in later this year. We're GONNA see the new consoles coming out and if you WANNA get VR headset. This is probably a terrible time because the oculus quest which is via hottest headset on the market has been out of stock for months. And it's just coming back in but getting one is really just a crap shoot. Actually let me just jump in here and point out how incredibly wrong Dave is because there is one console deal. That's happening right now. That is fantastic. And IT'S THE SEGA GENESIS. Many which is one of those Self-contained all in one retro throwback console things. It's normally eight bucks but it's on sale right now at Amazon and best buy game. Stop for fifty bucks. So that's kind of a great like father's Day gift item if you're looking for something like that and I just wrote about this on the cheapskate. Yeah Roger just want to add you probably know this already but for people who are listening and our maybe also shopping for a gaming friendly laptop it is super super important that you choose a machine that has a solid state drive Am even if it means getting a smaller drive for performance sake. It is going to blow a traditional hard drive out of the water and you could always add more stories later if you need to but it is really worth spending a little extra up front to get a system has a solid state drives instead of just a big old high capacity regular grass. Yeah that's that's a really good point but notre increasingly rare it actually getting harder and harder to find the laptop that has an old fashioned thinning drive in it so I kind of consider that table stakes. Absolutely get enough gate. Okay that's a
What to Do When Scared Workers Don’t Report to Work Due to COVID-19
"Other three million people. As I'm sure you've heard made first time claims for unemployment in the past week that brings it to thirty six million plus in the past couple of months there's a whole slew of second order effects out of that of course and one of them is that the Labor Department has told cities and states they have an obligation to detect waste and fraud in the unemployment system and there are reports of states that have been pushing companies to disclose when employers refused to return to work then as marketplace's Justin Ho reports. That is putting a whole lot of business is in a pretty tight spot about two weeks ago. The Vermont Labor Department launched a Web page for businesses to report employees. Who declined offers to return to work by doing so? Employers could effectively kick those workers off of unemployment insurance though there are some exemptions mark. Fryer Cohen's restaurant called the reservoir in Waterbury Vermont. He says he isn't happy with the tough choices that may force him to make. It makes it very difficult to think that we would have to turn to the state and tell them that they should pull their aid. Prior laid off all of his employees and mid-march he also took out a paycheck protection program. Loan which can be forgiven if he brings his head count backup during the loans. Eight week window restaurants are allowed to take out but Vermont hasn't allowed them to fully reopened. Friars restaurant is closed. We're not rushing to bring people off on employment will can't reopen our doors because of state order one of friars former employees is sage. Guggenheim had chef at the reservoir. She says she'd love to get back. But given the safety issues of returning to work she understands that others want to stay at home. We don't want to force people into a difficult position where they have to choose between what they want to do and what they have to do. Businesses want to keep good relationships with their employees says Labor Economists Teresa Ghilarducci at the new school. They also have the loyalty and relationship of trust that builds up over time. Several other states have set up similar websites for reporting employees including Montana Oklahoma Tennessee in South Carolina. Frank NAP is the president of the South Carolina Chamber of Commerce. He says many businesses are realizing a hard truth about their P loans. Despicable low may not be forgivable. He says some may decide to give back their PCs loans rather than force their employees to return to work. I'm just in how for marketplace

"So Liz I talked on the podcast. Before about acrylamide this is potentially harmful compound that can be created when we're roasting frying starchy foods like potatoes. So would using an air fryer to make French fries or potato chips result less or more acrylamide than frying them or even just oven roasting them. Yes so good news here. It actually will result in less formation of this compound. Now how I fully understand the concern and fear that people have when they hear this word. You know acrylamide is kind of scary word. It's a hard word to pronounce but rest assured. I've got some good news when it comes to air. Frying your food. Research has shown that air for foods actually result in the seventy five to ninety percent reduction in the production in the production of acrylamide in comparison to deep fat frying. Now the study that I'm referring to here actually used a variety of pre soaking solutions. Things like citric acid and sodium chloride which I'm not recommending necessarily using kitchen but the results showed that the items in the air fryer didn't necessarily need that special pre-treatment solution meaning. You can just soak your potatoes your starchy. Whether it's a root vegetable. Whatever else. It is in a simple water based solutions so just using your daughter putting your chop potatoes. Your whatever kind of chip you're throwing in the fire and soaking it for at least thirty minutes helps to reduce that formation. Great any other things that we need to keep in mind when we're using an air fire to minimize that acrylamide formation so soak things just in plain filtered water for how long you want to the minimum amount of time thirty minutes but if you are prepping vegetables in the morning implant cooking them in the afternoon just throw them in the water then said. I'm in the Fridge. And by the time you're ready to prepare them the longer the soak the better will put it that way and then. Jane them in that you need to block them off with paper towels or something so that they're sort of dry before you put them in the air fire you do. Yes so in order for the oil because you will want to spray a little bit of your olive oil or you know Avocado oil whatever. It is on top of the actual potato. I'm just using potatoes as an example here but you will need to dry them. Know Block them with a paper towel to make sure that there's no Liquid on the outside so that oil actually stays on the product got it got it another thing to keep in mind too. Is that the the longer you fry so basically the darker formation of that Char that means more of that formation so the most you can minimize so really when we talk about temperatures with airframe and the time allotment try and keep it to that Golden Brown texture rather than you know getting into the charcoal black texture. That's never my intention. It does happen every once in a while if I if I don't take it often enough. So Golden Brown is what we're shooting for here. Yes so you've developed a lot of recipes for your new book airfare cookbook for Dummies and in developing I know from developing recipes. There's a lot of trial and error So were there. Any general techniques are best practices that you discovered were key to getting good results. Yes so actually. One of the first things was the cooking and small batches so I thought oh I could throw a handful in no. You don't necessarily want to overcrowd that basket because the end result will not be what you are craving if you're craving that potato chip or the crunchy Kale chips and you overcrowded your basket. You'RE NOT GONNA get that saint end result. So patience is a virtue here and really just focusing on small batch cooking the second thing I learned very early on was the blotting doctor so using your paper towels or your clean kitchen towel to make sure that your foods that have been soaked are very dry so that the seasoning sticks onto is going to be a super helpful tip to make sure that you get that delicious crave and product that you. Yeah I can imagine if you've got too much water on that third essentially just sort of steaming in there instead of caramelized and I've also had trouble with whatever seasonings I applied to my food. Most of it ending up the bottom of the basket instead of. That's an issue of making sure things are dry. Yes absolutely that's definitely related to that and then some people who are fearing the oil you don't necessarily need to fear that oil. It's just us. I actually have one of those glass bottles belittle. You know little sprayer on top and I just olive oil or avocado. Whatever I have right then and put it in there to spray the actual food. I don't necessarily spray the basket. I spray the food because that will help preventing it from sticking to the basket road and help seasonings stick to the food. Yes Yep all right. So what can we learn from the recipes? That didn't make it into the book. One had ended up on the cutting room floor and y yes okay so typically. The reason was uneven cooking distribution. I kind of alluded to that. He is Cheese dip recipe. I was talking about but when I attempted to cook rice in the air fire as a base for a fried rice recipe. I have it did not cook evenly through and it was probably the worst the worst rice. I've ever cooked in my kitchen so that was an as much as I wanted to give it into with pinterest. Gods were saying I just I couldn't and it just did not leave a favorable end product. So there's nothing wrong with doing some quick shortcuts whether you have premade rice. That's a ninety second pouch and using that for one of the fried rice recipes or cooking your rice ahead of time and just saving it and using the amount called for in the recipe. That is going to be a huge saver for you and get that product that delicious. Bite that you want so speaking of recipes. I'm sure people are going to wonder whether they might be able to adapt or modify their favorite recipes foreign air fire or do you recommend that we just stick with recipes that have been specifically developed and tested by somebody like you for an airfare or even is it important to pick recipes that are developed for your particular style or model of air fire. So that's a great question. And throughout the entire book I highly encourage people to experiment and test out their favorite recipes to make them their own. So for instance. If you have a classic coffee cake recipe that you have the right appointment that will fit in your airfare absolutely when encourage you to test it out but with caution for instance most air fry recipes will have for a baked good? We'll have a decreased temperature. So for instance if that recipe cooked at three seventy five in your typical oven it might cook at three thirty in your air. Fryer for you know. Twenty eight to twenty five minutes versus now. Know the forty to forty five minutes in your traditional oven so you do have to play around and be very Extra a attentive to your recipes that you're modifying but most recipes you can absolutely modify for your air. Fryer and the rule of thumb is. We want to cook it at a slightly lower temperature but a slightly longer time. Is that fair to say not necessarily longer time because it's interesting because the space is so compact it will actually help. Cook it faster but you do need that low and slow cooking. So the and this is traditionally for baked goods. That's that's a general. Mo forbid the baked goods now with a meat or something like that you do want to be more Definitely have your internal thermometer right there so you can test because we typically recommend for potentially hazardous food just really using internal temperature testing now. You're your website is shos swaps. That's big part of your brand. Are there specific healthy swaps that you can recommend when you're using an Air Fryer? Yes so I definitely tried to incorporate that throughout the book I was lucky enough to collaborate on this with a colleague who's also a dietician may both brought such unique aspects to the books. So one thing with my swapping. I definitely encourage really adding one more. At any kind of vegetable you can so we have a lot of fruit deserts. That are naturally sweetened with fresh blueberries or different strawberries frozen mangoes or different things like that. That really helped bring out the natural sweetness so intern. It's lowering the added sugar. Now there's not necessarily a formula to say like use two thirds less sugar if you're using this much fresh fruit or vice versa. But you can really rest assured that the recipe is are swapped with more wholesome goodness good for you. Foods versus more of your traditional fried food fair right so if for those of us who have not yet purchased in air fire and now we're thinking maybe it's time to invest in one. What are we looking for when we're looking at different models and different products? Yes so Amazon. I mean most outlets have a million different air fires because they have become so popular. I will suggest really looking at the reviews because I've tried out six different models now just really wanted to know what every model had with the bells and whistles were and it will say reviews do actually speak volumes for what the product can and can't do another thing is is making sure that the BPA free now Bpa is obviously is something that we've heard a lot about it potentially harmful chemical. That's often found in plastic and so most air friars do have a plastic component to them. The biggest concern is actually the basket. So if the basket is made of a safe Material that's one of the biggest concerns because that's heating constantly with a high temperature could getting so most will say this right on the outside of the package or right under manual so just look for someone that says you know. Bpa free fight free that kind of thing and you should be Feel very confident about making your purchase. The other type of thing to consider when you're purchasing your model is what is your cooking preference now. Do you prefer having a toaster oven style or with the basket if you have a large family. Maybe you're looking for one of the paddle type that has the tears too so those are all considerations to take into Kind of factor. In when before you're purchasing your model okay and then there's a bunch of stuff that that you can buy with them. They seem to have a lot of accessories. Yes so that's another thing when you're doing your reviews and rating them. I mean. Obviously there's always that one bad apple who just had a terrible experience. Maybe you know filter those out but the often talk about how useful the add-ons were with the product. So for instance I got one of the appliances that had a seven inch. Bundt Pan with it and it had some silicon. Muffin liners things like that. That were all included within the price which is great. Especially if you don't have those items already and if you're concerned about face you can actually store them inside the airfare basket if you have that model so it's really convenient really easy and you don't have to worry about too much extra space being taken up. Well now that you mention space I have to say Now I'm picturing six air fires on your kitchen counter. What all the air freighters them all so. My family actually did not have air fires. I have a few sisters my parents so everyone has now received their own airfare. Rusty things tested. You know the first gamut in saw which ones I actually preferred over others and which ones were actually a little bit time-saving because making so many recipes and that kind of thing so now everyone in my family has an airframe. Online spending on track to hit a new record this holiday season
"It's been a record record couple days for online shopping and just a few hours left in Cyber Monday. Retailer seemed poised for another big hall. Let's get to Courtney Reagan with the big numbers behind one of the biggest shopping days of the year. Hey Courtney Hey Melissa. So I'm here at one of Walmart's fulfilment campuses. This is actually one of six that is working to fulfill all of those online line orders. That are coming in on cyber Monday. Walmart does expect that today may end up being one of if not its biggest day of the year for those online orders and so far some of their bestsellers include the apple. Air Pods that INSTA- pot. Apparently not everybody has one of those yet the Ninja Air Fryer the video fifty five inch TV and the Nintendo switch but in total beyond just Walmart Dot Com. The National Retail Federation does expect the sixty nine million Americans will shop at some point today. you mentioned those records. Adobe is expecting this days sales to grow out twenty percent over last year to hit nine point four billion dollars. And that's on top of the records Kurds. That were already set online for Thanksgiving Day and Black Friday. But what's interesting. Is there still a lot of shopping. That's going to be left done tonight. Remember ever in the old days when you had to get to work to use the high speed internet on your desktop computers. That's what we saw pete sales much earlier in the day during work hours. Now it's much later at at night. The golden hours adobe expects will be between seven and eleven. PM Pacific Time. So that's ten PM here on the East Coast. Once the kids are in bed and all the chores are done. That's when they think the shopping will get started now. Of course we are getting some preliminary data for how things have been shaping up online edison trends at least analyzed. It's about three hundred thousand transactions from Thanksgiving and Black Friday. They say that Nordstrom has actually seeing the biggest increase in customer spending online compared compared to last year with a sixty percent jump Walmart close behind with fifty three percent in the Amazon with forty nine percent target however and J. C. Penney those spending online numbers from these transactions samples fell about twelve and fourteen percent respectively. We still have an awful lot of shopping and time left to go and we know we still have a decent season left even though it is six days at shorter. So be careful when you're ordering online and you're looking at the shipping dates just a little bio buyer irby wear for Meteo beco- view of all. Right thanks for the tip. Courtney Reagan What are you doing over there? He is your modem on the Fritz on this one of those people to coordinate when when you go to the work for the high speed Internet. I'm one of the. That's what you're doing is doing right now answering your question if you WanNa have a conversation about retail. I can do that as well very much. Still by eight track tape players hundred percent should say that retail looked the trades are interesting Cosco reports on December twelve. It's had a huge run but now valuations traits it thirty two times next year's numbers we've been both China Carter. Braxton worth through appears every Friday on the options action which would back this this Friday after being usurped this past week by the holiday he talked about this for the last six months. He's been correct. I think you've got to sell it into earnings target catching up the Walmart art finally on Valuation But Walmart at Twenty three times which is sort of the benchmark for everything in my opinion is just too expensive in this environment one thing. I don't know if we break out. His is buy online. Pick up in store which I think is a really a difference. It's a very big difference right and and you invariably by something else when you're there right so That's one interesting part. I think you know target sighted a number of other ones do. I think there's GonNa be retail winners here. We've seen some of the ones is that don't work right. I don't know if macy's can turn it around I think I'm not optimistic on that one. But I do think that I do think Nordstrom has a much better chance as a much better chance and even though the socks more expensive. I'd rather be in a Nordstrom macy's both of those stocks extreme streaming serenely high interest percent about. Yes we just got numbers Nordstrom and they were fine although if you look again they're they're they're full price versus their offer Akwa their sale price two very different stories perpetuating the story they get a little boost out of their New York flagship store adding some some gross margin. But when you look at target and Walmart I would go back to those. Because I think they've been such great stocks people own over the last twelve months but The relative victory that Delta in their online sales growth has been so extraordinary and so price. I stand in so much the part I think if people said when they said guess what targets not going to Amazon and that's exactly part of why the stock has done so well so hard for me to say that that's not in the price. I think the bar for both of those folks into this holiday season is very very high. Amazon has been targeted or Walmart. Well no it has. I mean listen you know I think at the end of the day import remember that Amazon while they get about fifty percent of the online sales growth that exists out. There you know. Online sales are still ten percent or less of the total five trillion earliest of US consumer sales. So there's plenty I think that's why Amazon is kind of stalled here. Some of these guys have made some really good progress. They made investments over the last couple of years. That took some time to kind in a bear out and they're starting to do that. I'll just say one name to keep an eye on home. Depot had that gap after earnings a couple of weeks ago and it kept going I think about nine and a half percent peak to trough decline started bounce last week a little bit look pretty good technically coming off of a trend line that thing turn lower keep an eye on that one because I just think that there's a lot of concentration in some of these mega. Ah Big big box names and these home improvement stocks that have really outperform but if you look at the X.. RT which is a broader look at all of retail it's ten percent of the year really underperforming the SNP. So I want to keep an eye on some of these other ones. That are very crowded and I think guys Costco the way it reacts to earnings guidance will be very important for the weed tells me

There's you know there's a little bit more to and I could talk for another two hours about this quite frankly but basically that's kind of how we do our financial console to once we have that conversation Donald Bring the form over and that will kind of review. "fryer" Discussed on As It Happens from CBC Radio
"A meteorologist with Environment, Canada described it as a quote, tropical downpour sound so exotic. It was not for a few hours last night. It was like an impossibly large bucket of dirty watered was emptied over the city of Toronto cars and streetcars were submerged basement drains gushed and in an elevator in one building in the city's West End, an elevator flooded with two men inside Kleber. Friar is one of those two men. He was rescued by police when the elevator had filled nearly to the top, we reach Mr. fryer in Toronto cleaver fryer presumably you take the elevator all the time. When did you realize that this elevator trip was something different. Well, we're actually got a knock on our on our door at around ten thirty from the cleaning stuff. Just letting us know that there was a bit of water coming into the basement and we should move our cars. So I had my car down there took the elevator down, but as soon as we hit basement level where the parking garages, the water started gushing in, and I think that we were just sort of in disbelief for the first few moments that happened gushing is what it looked like. Gushing in Brown monkey dirty water coming in super fast as if it was coming from a fire hose from the bottom of the elevators. He began through the cracks. How quickly did the water start to rise? I think it was up to our waist level in about three minutes, but then it started to slow down luckily and we're able to take a moment to think about what to do because just before that happened before he talked to her waist level, we were trying to make an emergency call using the phone in the in the elevator emergency phone, but then it cut out because the water covered the speaker and everything shorted and we could not. Getting any cell signal. So the water was up to your waist within three minutes time? Yeah, it was coming and super fast. We did not realize how how flooded the basement had become all of the cars had already been submerged by the time that we took the elevator down. Who are you in the elevator with? I was, I was in there with with my co worker with teammate, Gabriel, and I'm not even sure why he came down with me. But if he was in there with me, I, I'm not sure if I would have made it. He was the only one that had a cell phone that we were able to use to try to get signal. So when the water got to your waist and covered the speaker of the emergency phones, you couldn't call it. What happened then? I think that that was a brief moment of realization to situation that we're in ended our lives where we're at risk that we were in danger. Gabriel star, you're praying and I heard that he was praying for me as well. And at that moment started going through all of the things that I could have done differently to avoid that situation that day I supposed to go pick up..
