Now back to the story in the summer of nineteen. Twenty four Fritz Harmon had been taken into police custody on suspicion of having committed a string of murders. Starting in nineteen eighteen in the interrogation room Harmon was blustery and more dismissive than it usually was during police questioning he had been interrogated many times before and was not easily intimidated police finally did a thorough. Search of harm. It's apartment and found the bed and floor had been extensively soaked in blood the Harmon had cleaned the surfaces thoroughly traces of blood that it's soaked into floors and mattress was found with careful inspection Harmon brushed it off by saying the blood was a result of his contraband meat trade with the mystery butcher. Carl police knew better Harmon was held in jail for a week where he was interrogated and deprived of sleep and food. Meanwhile, police found his collection of trophy. Fees and publicly displayed them at the police station relatives of missing persons traveled to the station to view the items and many identified the clothing as belonging to their missing loved ones. But when confronted with the mounting evidence against him Harmon remained composed he explained that he came upon the clothing through his black market trading than on June twenty-ninth nineteen twenty four police found the suit that had belonged to Fritz Wittig the one that Harmon had given to Crohn's. It was a huge break in the case unbeknownst to Harmon. Police had found a skull forensically identified as belonging to Wittig the month. Previous police could now prove that Harmon had clothing belonging to a murder victim. In addition, a friend of Wittig saw Harmon talking with Wittig a few days before his disappearance but Harmon didn't budge until his landlady turned over would exhaust coat. The landlady told police she had witnessed Harmon destroying identify. Buying markers on the jacket before he gave it to her and Lou of rent money. Apparently grunts wasn't the only one to get wigs possessions. Harmon broke down he confessed to raping murdering and dismembering a multitude of young men Harmon spent much of his lengthy confessions. Supplying cobbled together excuses and explanations for his motives he stressed repeatedly that he had not meant to kill anyone. But in the heat of rabid sexual passion, as he called it had been unable to control himself Harmon was careful to only name victims. Police had already linked to him which weren't many the only evidence police could find where the clothes in Harman's apartment. Only a quarter of the nearly four hundred articles of clothing found were connected to missing persons because the identification process required relatives and friends to physically come to the police station. It's possible some victims were never identified especially consider. Being Harman's predilection for abducting travelers from other cities at one point during his confession Harmon said there are some victims, you don't know about. But it's not those you think and when asked for the total number of people he had killed Harmon said somewhere between fifty and seventy but he also claimed he couldn't remember some killings, and it's not uncommon for serial killers to inflate the numbers of their victims. Dr Catherine Ramsland writes that the most significant reasons some serial killers lie about victim count is simply the enjoyment. They take in deception Harmon, for example, loved tricking victims into following him to his apartment and was proud of his ability to fool authorities during his confession. He took obvious glee in pointing out to police that is crimes had been committed right under their noses special agent. Mary Ellen O'Toole a behavioral analyst for the FBI brings up another reason killers may lie about. Victim count notoriety. She writes, quote, many of these people have an egotistical need to control and manipulate and some like to be better than the other guy, and quote, whether or not this contributed to Harman's claims about his victims. He did become Torius it's possible. This is why he confessed to so many killings despite police having concrete evidence linking him to only a few Harmon. Also confess that Hans grants knew about the murders and had assisted or encouraged him on several occasions grants was arrested as an accessory on July eighth about a month after Harmon. Six weeks. After his confession Harmon was examined by a psychologist at guarding and medical school Harmon had been sent to a mental institution when he was seventeen and the prospect of being sent back terrified him, thanks to his admissions of guilt. The psychologist judged Harmon sane enough to stand trial in July of nineteen twenty four at the age of forty five Fritz Harmon was charged with the murders of twenty-seven young men and boys the trial was a media sensation and made international headlines. The leading daily news a small Michigan newspaper. Ran the headline trial of Fritz Harmon wholesale slayer has stirred all Germany, news coverage was also responsible for Harman's during nicknames, including the werewolf of Hanover, and the vampire of Hanover. There was such a public frenzy surrounding the case that extra policemen had to be employed to push through the crowds of. Citizens and journalists around the courthouse Harmon enjoyed the attention immensely the trial was originally open to the public, but after two days of frenzied Hanover residents fighting to get courtroom seats, the trial was closed. One of the most publicized aspects of the case was Harman's. Meet business customers who purchased his meat testified as to its questionable Content's Harmon strenuously denied he had ever sold or consumed meat from his victims. But it didn't curb public suspicion Harmon pled guilty to fourteen of the twenty seven murders. He claimed he could not recall definitively. Whether he had murdered the remaining thirteen when presented with photos of these victims during the proceedings, he became dismissive and hardly glanced at them. He waved his hands at the photos and said things like I don't remember. But you can go ahead and charge me. I don't mind. Harman appeared relaxed during the trial and smoked cigars incessantly. He lodged only one complaint that there were too many women in the courtroom. He suggested they be removed. Although that went ignored despite his nonchalance are perhaps because of it Harmon made a positive impression on the jury and the journalists who were fascinated by his casual aloof manner on a few occasions Harmon, even elicited laughter from the room when a medical expert yawned during his testimony and Harmon asked are you all right to go on professor later. He interrupted the prosecution by shouting that they were all liars for their part. The prosecution was not amused. They presented the hundreds of bone fragments recovered from the liner river Harman's, bloody mattress and the bucket. He used to store human remains when it came to the accusations about his illicit meat trade medical testimony supported Harmon. Doctors confirmed that the meat found in Harman's apartment at the time of his arrest was not human still police. Never located Carl the enigmatic source of the meat now, the rumors persisted, we still don't know for sure whether Harman eight or sold human meat while Harmon was candid about some aspects of his crimes, it's also clear. He wanted to be seen as someone who acted in the heat of passion and wasn't malicious. He took care to, cultivate, this idea in the minds of the media and those present at the trial. He denied committing murders. That were clearly premeditated and talk mournfully of his efforts to control his urge to kill. He also tried to portray himself as helpful to the homeless runaways and Hanover by focusing on the few times, he gave money or day jobs to his Aaron boys. He didn't mention he often raped or abused those same boys. He insisted he never tours victims throats out entirely during the murderers. To avoid being charged with cannibalism the trial ended after only two weeks Harmon was convicted of twenty four out of the twenty-seven murders. He was charged with this included all of the murders to which Harmon pled guilty or agreed that he had probably committed it excluded three murders that Harmon denied perpetrating either. Because he blamed Hans grants for them or because they contradicted his crimes of passion narrative Harman's willingness to admit to so many of his murders lent credibility to the few. He denied either way they had no bearing on his sentencing. He would be executed for murder either way, but they were crucial to the case of Hans Crohn's who is being tried at the same time as Harmon while Harman's relaxed demeanor won over some onlookers grens came off as a Radic during his trial. He vehemently denied involvement in Harman's killings and showed little emotion other than anxiety. During the proceedings both Harmon and groans were sentenced to death by beheading Harmon calmly received the verdict, but grens became hysterical. He collapsed after returning to sell four months after the trial on April. Fifteenth nineteen twenty five Fritz Harmon was set to be executed. He walked up to the guillotine with a brave face. His last words were quote. I am guilty gentlemen. But hard though, it may be I want to die as a man I repent, but I do not beer, death and quote. After Harmon was executed. His brain was dissected traces of meningitis were found in sections of the removed brain meningitis is the inflammation of the membranes around the brain and spinal cord, according to Dr d vanderbeek when left untreated meningitis can cause inflammation of the brain itself and lead to brain damage. This could provide a glimmer of insight into Harman's deviant behavior and could even explain some of his symptoms like the blackouts he experienced during his military days in the same article by Dr David beak, he writes that swelling of the brain caused by meningitis can lead to decreasing levels of consciousness in Harman's case, if he did have been injustice and presented unusually it would explain why doctors were unable to come up with a diagnosis at the time. According to the centers for disease control, viral meningitis usually resolves without treatment. But any lasting damage caused to the brain. Would have remained. This makes it possible that the seeds of Harman's horrendous crimes were planted during his first stint in the army. Unfortunately, we don't know more as Harman's brain was not preserved and discarded shortly thereafter, his head was kept from aldehydes at the guarding and medical school from nineteen twenty five until two thousand fourteen when it was at last cremated. But even after the guillotine fell the story of Fritz Harmon did not end the night before his execution Harmon wrote a letter retracting statements he made about gronzy's involvement in the murders with this new evidence grens now twenty five got a second trial the following year in nineteen twenty six he was charged with aiding and abetting Harmon for the two murders. He was implicated in during his previous trial. Grens was convicted once again, he was spared. The death penalty and served twelve years in prison until nineteen thirty nine unfortu-. Definitely by then the Nazi party was in power and transferred grants to the in house and concentration camp where he endured forced labor in appalling conditions, he returned to Hanover after World War Two where he lived until his death in nineteen seventy five aged seventy four.

"Started. We'll see how Harman's bloodlust grows in a minute. No back to the story. In June of nineteen Twenty-three just two weeks after moving into his new attic apartment. Forty four year old Fritz Harmon met his new neighbors thirteen year old son Ernst ehrenberg for its decided. It was time to Chris in his new place. He nabbed the boy while ehrenberg was out running an errand for his father. He took the boy back to the room and fed him a meal before killing him sinking his teeth into Aaron Burks throat criminologist. Eric Hickey states in the book serial killers and their victims that serial killers, especially those who are sexually motivated like Harman can get addicted to sexually satisfying behavior Harmon took a big risk by attacking his neighbor's child but much like any addict would at times find it impossible to control himself by no Harmon was referring to his murder method as his love bite. What had started as an occasional urge? Now dominated his life. There had been years between his first and second known victims. But now Harman began killing at least once a month. He lived in constant anticipation of his next victim every passing young boy was target to misdirect police. He snitched on his fellow thieves and fed information about criminals to his contact detective muehler sometimes grants contributed to Fritz alibis. The longer harm and help the police the more. They believed that he was a good, man. Caught in bad circumstances Harmon felt invincible according to the crime classification manual published by the FBI serial killers can become overconfident as a result of evading capture for their first few murders. This overconfidence can even cause a previously meticulous killer who plans crimes carefully to become impulsive and disorganized in the two months following his murder of ehrenberg harm. And picked up three youths from Hanover station. Hinrichs truce Paul bronner's. Chefs ski and Richard Greif were all promised housing and work charmed by Harman and wanting to escape turbulent home lives. They followed him back to his apartment Herman raped and murdered all three boys and kept their possessions, including a violin case a coat and a hand tailored suit, two months later in October of nineteen Twenty-three Harmon stopped Wilhelm earner while the boy was on his way to work Harman pretended to be a police officer named detective hunter Brock and arrested earner on charges of travelling with forged documents. But instead of taking him to the station Harmon forced the boy into his apartment where he killed him. A local man witnessed the arrest told earners parents about it. They went to the police station where they were told. There was no detective hunter Brock, and they were sent away never to see their son. Again, two weeks later thirteen-year-old Hines Brinkman was on his way to visit his brother in the German army. He arrived at Hanover station late and Harmon offered the boy a place to stay for the night. Then killed him. Throughout nineteen Twenty-three Hans Grahn stayed with Fritz Harmon grants claimed he knew nothing about the boys murdered during that time, which totalled twelve victims before November. But he and Harmon were together constantly in November of nineteen Twenty-three grens in Harmon were seen at Hanover station. The pair chatted with a seventeen year old apprentice carpenter named Adolf Hon. Appel? They took him to a nearby cafe. The next day Harmon said he arrived home to find Hans grants and his friend Hugo would Cusco standing over haunting Pels dead body grants had laid the corpse in Harman's bed. Crohn's didn't explain what had happened but said to Harmon one of yours he asked Harman to dispose of the body as if the victim was Harman's own. It would seem as though Fritz Harmon was not the only murderer living in the attic apartment. The early nineteen twenties were difficult years for Germany the country suffered the after effects of World War One and was increasingly impoverished the city of Hanover struggled with homelessness black market smuggling and violent crime after hundreds of residents, particularly young boys went missing in nineteen Twenty-three. Rumors began to circulate there was aware wolf preying on young men. The rumors weren't just fantasy and his nineteen Twenty-three gave way to nineteen twenty four the where wolf only claimed more victims on January fifth nineteen twenty four for its Harmon. No, forty five killed his first victim of the year and his fifteenth total a seventeen year old named earns speaker by this time Harmon had begun to lose track of his VICTIMS Names. But he remembered the clothes they wore which he always kept as trophies in the encyclopedia of murder and violent crime re. Researcher, Nicole Motte notes, quote, a trophy represents power over that individual. When the offender keeps this kind of souvenir it serves as a way to preserve the memory of the victim and quote, the desire for power over an individual seen in keeping trophies echoes the desire for power that motivated Harmon to sexually assault defenceless, young boys. It was thanks to one trophy that Harmon always recalled his next victim. Fritz Wittig Harmon killed Wittig. Because Hans Crohn's like the man suit and harm wanted to gift it to Crohn's Harman's addiction was intensifying on may twenty six nineteen twenty four the same day. He killed Wittig Harmon. Also claimed a second victim. His second victim was also his youngest ten-year-old Friedrich hobbling was skipping school when he encountered Harmon in the streets of Hanover. His remains were later found in the river. Meanwhile, the residents of Hanover. Ver- were growing more terrified local newspapers ran headlines about the masses of missing children and pressure on law enforcement mounted in may nineteen twenty four to children playing by the liner river found a human skull. The skull was turned into police who determined belonged to a male between the ages of eighteen and twenty four the skull also bore evidence of knife wounds, but incredibly police didn't take it seriously. The find was at first attributed to some grave robbers who had recently been chased out of a cemetery nearby. Some officers thought it could be a prank by some students at guarding and medical school where they're just been an outbreak of typhoid two weeks later two boys playing in a field found a sack filled with fragments of human bones. Still police were focused on other matters and did little to address the situation altogether. Harmon is known to have murdered thirteen boys over the course of nineteen twenty four bringing. Total count to twenty four victims on June fourteenth harm abducted seventeen year old Eric devreese after the ball had gone for his daily swim and the Ohio river reece's sister reported that she had seen Harmon watching Reese as he swam a few days beforehand on the day Harmon, murdered Reese he lured the boy to his apartment by promising him cigarettes after he convinced freeze to lay back onto his bed. He strangled and bit into the boy harmed disposed of Reese at the entrance to Herron house and gardens a large formal garden near Hanover's palace. It took him four trips to completely dispose of the dismembered body. Meanwhile, the lack of police response to the disappearing boys frustrated Hanover residents in June of nineteen twenty four more than one hundred people scoured the banks of the liner river searching for evidence that would convince the police to act they found hundreds of Hugh. Human bone fragments which had been violently cut or broken and angrily handed them over to police at last convinced. The bones were connected to violent crimes the police drag the lineup and found an additional five hundred human bone fragments. Many of the fragments were determined to belong to young males. Initially police had few leads. They looked for known criminals in the area Harmon had long lived near the liner river and had a history of sexual assault and child molestation as officers poured over case files, they noticed that Harmon also had direct connections to a number of missing persons cases from the last two years, but some officers especially Harman's police contact detective muehler were slow to suspect Harmon, they couldn't believe such an amiable. And as they saw it simple man could have pulled off crimes like these undetected. Nevertheless, police decided to tail him since Harmon new most. Of the local officers from his work as a police informant. Too. Young policemen were brought in from Berlin in the summer of nineteen twenty four the Berliners posed his homeless vagrants around Hanover station and eventually spotted Harmon there late at night in the company of a fifteen year old boy, the boy was Carl from a runaway who Harmon had taken in a few days prior from and Harmon began arguing at the station Harmon grabbed from by the wrist and took him to some local police officers patrolling the station in uniform, he accused from travelling on forged identification papers, the uniform officers arrested from and Harmon left the station alone. It seems that efforts to catch Harmon in the act had failed for the night. But once from was taken to the station, he had a lot to say from told officers he had been staying with Harmon for four days harm, it initially offered from work. But once they were in the apartment. He instead abused and raped from repeatedly on the morning of his arrest. From claimed Harmon held a knife to his throat and asked are you afraid to die from started crying Harmon walked the threat back and pretended? It was a joke. But from that moment on he wouldn't let from out of the site. The story proved enough for police to act they arrested Harmon the next morning at long last the where Wolfe had been unmasked. Will

"Germany. In March of nineteen twenty three forty four year old Fritz Harmon was euphoric. He was living in his hometown of Hanover, Germany in a run down apartment his twenty two year old on again off again lover and accomplice less than a month prior. He had committed his second murder by brutally biting through the throat of a teenager named Fritz Franken Harmon didn't feel a trace of guilt over the murder of Franken. In fact, he never felt guilt for any of his actions. Instead, he justified them by claiming that he never intended to kill his victims. But was overcome by a violent uncontrollable urge in the midst of the sexual assault. This type of justification is fairly common in serial killers. They're unable to feel empathy for their victims. And instead focus only on their own feelings and struggles. The nest is going to take over on the psychology here. Please note that Vanessa is not a licensed psychologist or psychiatrist, but she has done a lot of research for this show. Thanks, Greg Harman's description of his violent urges fits with that of a psychopathic erotic Fono file or lust murderer Dr J Malloy, author of the psychopathic mind, origins, dynamics and treatment writes, quote, psychopathic serial killers are emotionally disconnected from their actions. Their ability to dissociate themselves emotionally from their actions, and their denial of responsibility, effectively neutralizes any guilt and quote Harmon knew he would kill again, but was afraid of being caught. He took great pains to cover his tracks dismembering Frankas body and dumping it in the river. Luckily for him he also worked as a police informant. So police hardly ever knocked on his door without. Warning him law enforcement in Hanover was stretched thin even if the police had focused their efforts on tracking down missing young, boys. It's doubtful. They would have suspected Harmon in nineteen Twenty-three alone. Six hundred teenage boys were reported missing. In the city Harmon wasn't the only one preying on the young vulnerable boys regularly ran away in search of work or were abducted and sold to shady organizations such as the foreign legion, which was known to purchase young men to serve in the French army after getting away clean for the second time new confidence fueled Harman's bloodlust. So when he met seventeen year old Wilhelm shelter that Hanover station in one thousand nine twenty three four weeks after killing Fritz Franken he couldn't help but approach the boy by now Harmon had a practice routine for finding suitable victims he often patrolled Hanover station under the guise of a police officer searching for vulnerable, boys. Shoots was a young writer who had just run away from home. And this made him an easy target for Harman Harman had impersonated a police officer and pretended to lend us sympathetic ear to the boys troubles. He offered a place to stay into war meal. She'll say eagerly accepted the offers and followed Harmon to his apartment the room was small but spotless after nearly getting caught for the murder of Frank. Just weeks prior Harmon had scrubbed every inch. In fact, he had been scrubbing the place with harsh chemicals, so often that other tenants in the house had complained to the landlord. A widow named Elizabeth angle but Harmon had long ago explained angle that he was very particular about his cleaning habits, and she saw no reason to bother attendant for keeping his room. Tidy besides Harmon was charming angle liked him his charm also allowed him to urge young boys like Schulte into his bed. Given his pleasant friendly. Manner Harmon was always able to get close to his victims without making them uncomfortable in these situations Harmon, especially like to ask victims about their families this line of questioning seemed reasonable coming from a police officer. But Harman's true goal was anything. But noble he needed to know if anyone would come looking for the boy, according to Harman, he didn't always feel a violent urge to kill the boys. He brought back to his apartment in some cases and kept young men around as errand boys for several days. He gave them small jobs or meals until they stopped coming around other times, he raped the boys but did not kill them. But unfortunately, for Schulte his answers made Harmon confident that no one would question his disappearance Harmon pulsed he grabbed shelter by the throat and held him down. He raped him. And in the midst of the attack sunk his teeth into shelters Adam's apple. Schulz's remains were never found Harmon claimed he dumped pieces of the body in the liner river as he did. With most victims Harmon had now begun to see the killings as part of his daily life like his trade in secondhand clothing. In fact, in exchange for rent reduction, he gave his landlady most of Schulz's close Harmon was now so experienced in killing that he was profiting off of it during this time Harman's twenty two year old lover Hans Crohn's lived with him intermittently. If Crohn's was living with him on nights that Harman's searched for victims. He made sure ahead of time that Grahn stayed away from the apartment Crohn's had other lovers and would stay with them on nights that Harmon was busy. Despite this Harmon claimed grens knew about the murders and didn't mind them. He just didn't want to witness them. Likewise, Harmon preferred to do the deeds alone. And so the strange living arrangement with Crohn's was born. After the murder of Shilpa Harman grew insatiable in the following eight weeks, he killed at least two other young boys. Rowland hook and Hans Sonnenfeld. He was confident that his crimes would not be discovered. Thanks to his close relationship with the police. Dr Scott, a bon- a criminology professor explains why a serial killer might escalate the pace of their crimes to such a degree. He writes, quote, serial killers, get better and better at the business of murder with experience as they continue to operate and avoid capture serial killers become increasingly emboldened, and may come to believe they will never be apprehended and quote Harmon found a young man known as hoop at Hanover station. The boy was running away from home to join the marines. But unfortunately, Harmon had other plans the two left the station together and who was never seen again. Because last words were to was friend Alwin. Alwin give my parents my love. I'm going away hoops parents made a report and pleaded for help. But police brushed them off. The missing persons report was never touched. Harman's? Next victim was a young factory worker named Hans Sonnenfeld Harmon met the boy around Hanover station and courted him giving him gifts and taking him out for meals before he disappeared, son and filled till does younger sister. I have a boyfriend and I'm his bride one night. After an intense argument with his parents Sonnenfeld left his house and never returned. It's likely he fled to Harman's apartment straight into a trap soon after he killed son and filled Harmon attempted to prey on yet another very young runaway. But this boy was wary of Harmon from the start and less compliant than most of Fritz's other victims Harmon introduced himself as a police officer. And after a lengthy conversation convince the boy to go back to his apartment by threatening him with a rust for loitering after getting him to the apartment Harmon lunged at the boy almost. Immediately. He held the boy down and try to bite into his throat. But the boy thrashed wildly and manage to flee the apartment Harmon didn't dare chase him down a public street. He spent days terrified that the boy would go to the police. Luckily for Harmon, the boy was never found and is not known to have reported the crime, this highlights the vulnerability of the boys Harmon preyed on he attacked runaways and others. He could take advantage of because they had little recourse to fight back. It was a way of dominating his victims by June nineteen Twenty-three Harmon had killed three boys in his ground-floor apartment in a matter of months. His neighbors were getting suspicious of the auto or is he kept and the young boys that regularly entered and left his apartment. They were also disturbed by Hans grans is constant presence who they felt was sullen and sinister is neighbors formed varying theories about Harmon, strange, comings and goings one. Tenant thought he sold children to the foreign legion. But none of them imagined the true nature of his activities Harman's late hours. Weren't there? Only causes for concern while he had long traded in clothing and other stolen property. More recently Harmon had also begun to sell low grade contraband meat the meat was always cut into small bits and boneless. It was processed using a meat Kreider and sold as mints Germany struggles with poverty and hyperinflation following World War One. So a cheap source of protein was at first seen as a godsend Harman's, fellow tenants did notice that he rarely arrived home with packages of meat yet often left with them, then Harman's landlady became ill from eating sausages Harmon claimed where sheep intestines. Another occasions Harmon told customers the meat was pork. A store owner who worked across the street from Harmon became suspicious and asked where Harmon procured the meat Harmon claimed he bought it cheap. From a butcher named Carl based in the re cling in district of Hanover. The owner had previously heard Harmon state Carl operated and run Enberg on still another occasion Harman claimed he traded with Carl in the Hanover market hall. The store owner persisted an asked Harmon more probing questions. That's when Harmon pointed randomly to a passing woman. He claimed the woman was a friend and he needed to talk to her. Then he walked away pass the woman without saying word. He never returned to the owners store, but the owner wasn't done. He secretly followed Harmon one night Harmon was lugging a large sack to the liner river, the store owner couldn't make out its contents. But he watched as Harmon dumped it in the river and the dead of night the following day. The owner went to the police officers were skeptical of his story, but performed a quick search of Harman's apartment they found. Nothing at Harmon had avoided arrest once again, but feeling the heat of his neighbors suspicions forty four year old Harmon decided to move this time to an attic apartment along with Hans grans in June of nineteen Twenty-three while the move through any suspicious neighbours off his trail. It did little to delay his killing spree that it would seem was only getting started.

"Betrayal. Two weeks after the break in a seventeen year old boy named Hans kiemes went missing strangely Harmon contacted kinison's parents and offered his services in locating the boy, he also told police that grens was responsible for key MRs disappearance, but grants couldn't have kidnapped came as as he was in police custody for theft at the time the boy went missing two months after chemo disappeared. His naked body was found tied up in the Hanover canal, a handkerchief with Hans Crohn's monogram on it was found in the boys throat since Crohn's couldn't have killed kiemes while he was being held by police. It's probable Fritz Harmon committed the murder and tried to frame grounds. As revenge for stealing things. This was likely Harmon second victim and a signal to thirties that he wasn't afraid to kill again. But because there was no physical evidence linking Hough. Arm into the crime and Harman's still enjoyed a close relationship with the police. He was never tried for the murder not long after the police stopped investigating the kiemes case for it's an Hans reconciled Hans moved back in with Fritz, and they resumed their relationship in light of the fact that Fritz accepted Hans back so willingly it's possible. He didn't intend on genuinely framing haunts for came as murder after all he must have known Hans would be in police custody at the time he abducted kiemes, it all could have been part of some bizarre test. Greg mccreery criminologist and former FBI agent points out that when a criminal believes he or she has met a potential accomplice the killer typically puts the accomplices loyalty to the test. He says, quote predators are like sharks waiting to see who will swim by and take the bait. And quote, we know haunts was willing to get involved in Fritz's black market trading. Enterprise. But the extent of his involvement in harm's. Murders is subject to debate. Hans bronze always claimed he knew nothing about the killings and Fritz Harman's accounts varied over the years. It isn't unusual for a serial killer to work with an accomplice. According to Eric Hickey, a forensic psychologist more than one fifth of serial killers operate in teams most often teams of two in these relationships. One is usually the dominant figure and seek someone. They could exert power over frequently exploiting neediness and youth. Hans Crohn's certainly suffered at the hands of Fritz's sudden temper Harman's pattern of evicting bronze and than begging for him back was manipulative and emotionally abusive. Dr Al Carlisle, a former prison psychologist states that in these types of accomplice relationships each party needs something critical from the other. He writes, quote, the dominant person needs the followers loyalty in order. To validate him or herself and quote this fits with Harman's explanation. As to why he kept begging for grants to come back after the victims Harmon abused bronze to push Crohn's loyalty to the limits. So what did get on it? Although the two were lovers. Crohn's? Also had female lovers at insisted. He was heterosexual. Perhaps Hans was after a different kind of relationship. Fritz later told police that he saw Hans as a son it could be that hun sought paternal affection and thority from Fritz ultimately will never know how involved grants was and Fritz Harman's murders. But there are strong indications. He knew more than he admitted and as Fritz as rampage continued Crohn's innocence became harder to believe. Five years after his first murder and four years after moving in with Crohn's for the first time for its Harmon claimed his second confirmed victim is seventeen year old pianist Fritz Franko met forty four year old Harmon at Hanover station Harmon was patrolling the station as he often did looking for criminals or potential victims Harmon took Franken back to his apartment along. With Hans Crohn's and two of Grandes female acquaintances that evening after grounds and the two women left Harmon killed franca by biting through his Adam's apple. According to Harmon following the murder grants arrived at the apartment unannounced and found Harmon standing over Frankas nude body Harman claimed Grahn simply turned and asked wind chill. I come back again to women came back by the apartment the next day for its harm was frantic. He told them Franken had left and traveled to Hamburg, but the women's spotted Frankas clothes on the bed and went to the police by coincidence the policemen. The woman reported to was detective muehler the officer was using Harman as an informant. One of the women told muehler that grant said whispered to her the night before that Franken was going to be trampled. Upon tonight. Muehler ordered the police to search Harman's apartment the following day, but found nothing incriminating the investigation was called off it's possible Mueller's relationship with Fritz influenced how seriously he took the women's. Tragically? This was only the beginning for Fritz Harmon. He was euphoric after the murder of Franken and began killing with increased frequency and ferocity. The police never suspected the depravity. Their informant was capable of not only did Harmon lead law enforcement on a wild goose chase. He may have been committing crimes worse than they ever dared to consider after Franko was murdered Fritz Harmon began trading and low grade contraband, meet fellow tenants at the house where Harmon was staying reported that they often saw him leaving with packets of meat, but rarely saw him bring meet back to his room next week will follow the discovery of Fritz Harman's victims his trial. And discover the source of meat supply inside Fritz lurked aware wolf, and it was growing very hungry. Thanks

In who they knew only as a mysterious police officer wrote ahead and seeing police attempted to find the mystery man, but were unable to come up with any leads rotas friends began their own investigation and manage to track Fritz Harmon to his apartment when rotas friends told the police they identified Fritz as the man wrote ahead last been seen with in nineteen eighteen the police failed to act immediately. They were reluctant to search Fritz Harman's apartment since he was a trusted informant. Eventually, though, the rota family pressured the police into conducting a raid weeks after rota went missing officers burst into Harman's one room apartment. The phone Fritz Harmon with a half naked thirteen year old boy. Fritz was terrified he'd thought. He was above suspicion and never expected to be raided by the police unannounced. It was for this reason he still had the severed head of freetyle rota wrapped in newspaper and stash behind his stove weeks after the murder. Luckily for him the commanding officer had not been ordered to search the room. So Fritz Harmon was arrested while the apartment went on searched Fritz was charged with sexual assault and battery of a minor and sentenced to nine months, but he managed to avoid serving the sentence for over a year by moving addresses and dodging the police during his time on the run he met eighteen year old. Fritz now forty two and Hans grens nineteen moved again this time into a dingy ground-floor apartment near the lineup. River things were quiet for over a year for its legal troubles continued. But calm during this period. Conversely, his romantic life was anything. But calm Fritz. And Hans fought constantly though, Fritz was in love with Crohn's grens often treated Fritz with undisguised contempt at other times grants showed Fritz great. Action and would come for his anger by kissing him passionately, the two had a strange to mull Chua station. Ship strange is an understatement. Fritz told the police during his confession that he was aware grounds manipulated him. Then even mocked him behind his back on multiple occasions, Fritz kicked grants out of the apartment following fiery arguments during these rows grens would insult Fritz while Fritz angrily accused and threatened him. Each time a few days later for its would apologize and beg for grants to come back. Fritz said the despite their problems he needed the validation grants provided he said he had to have quote, someone I meant everything to and quote, one of these explosive fights occurred soon after Fritz and Hans grants had moved into the ground floor apartment for. It's just finished serving time for assault after narrowly avoiding arrest for the murder of frito rota right after moving in free. Was convicted of burglary and sentenced to serve six months in a labor camp. When the six months ended he returned to the apartment and found the place ransacked, many of his belongings had been stolen and sold as he soon found out by grands. In addition Fritz discovered grants had stolen and spent his military pension checks in a rage Ritz, kicked grants out the next day grens waited for Fritz to leave the apartment, then he and a friend broke in and further cleaned, the place out Fritz saw this as the ultimate betrayal.

Now back to the story. In September nineteen eighteen thirty nine year old Fritz Harmon met seventeen year old freetyle rota in a cafe rota had run away from home and needed a place to stay Fritz Harmon using a false name told rota he was a detective and offered to help for. It's always assumed positions of authority when lying like this. After meeting at the cafe wrote to introduce Fritz to school friends for its Harmon gave the boys presence and took them into the woods where he seduced them. Several times afterward Fritz took rota back to his apartment where the two smoked and as Roma would later tell us friends had fun a few days after Fritz met rota Fritz took him to his small grimy apartment. Once again, the pair smoked and chatted as they had done several times before but as the night went on Fritz grew more aggressive. He began touching rota and attempting to seduce him the rota and Fritz had had sex before something made rota uncomfortable on this night. He spurned for its Harman's advances. That's when Fritz became angry. He grabbed rota held him down and forcibly sodomized him. Then in the midst of the rape. He bared his teeth like a rabid animal Fritz bit down on wrote his throat and r-. Ripped through his Adam's apple rota bled out and because of the damage to his windpipe died of his fixation. Fritz Harmon later claimed that the act of sexually assaulting rota produced a murderous urgent him that he had never felt before he described as sudden uncontrollable desire to bite through wrote his throat. It's possible. He was telling the truth erotic, Fono files or lust murderers are defined as individuals who get an intense sexual satisfaction. From killing these individuals could be overcome with the urge to kill during a sexual act. According to research by Dr are p Britain, these killers are typically timid and introverted people who then unleash during sex Fritz Harmon was usually characterized as timid police describe how he fidgeted constantly pulling his fingernails and running his hands through his hair, his soft voice. And sometimes childlike tendency to court sympathy gave observers the impression he cr-. Saved attention but struggled to relax in the presence of others. Other studies described sexual sadists as having intense desires, which they worked to repress. Dr p e Dietz has published a paper examining thirty sexual sadists of those examined forty three percent identified as gay and twenty percent reported dressing in women's clothing. We know it's Harmon was abused by his father for exhibiting feminine tendencies, it's possible after such severe and continuing mistreatment his repressed desires made him unable to control himself during sex in stark contrast to the tightly controlled and meek behavior, he showed when interacting with authorities this fits with contemporary descriptions of Harmon, but it doesn't fully explain the depravity of Fritz's later actions. Thirty nine year old Fritz Harman stood over the corpse of Friedel rota, though, it was the middle of the night, and he was exhausted. He didn't alone self any rest. East? He drank a strong Cup of black coffee. Cupboard wrote his face with a cloth and cut him open using litany of knives. He buried parts of rota keeping the remaining parts hidden behind his stove rotas was the only body for its Harmon is known to have buried during his later confession Harmon reported he was sick for eight days. Following a road is murder. The sickness prevented him from disposing of wrote his body as quickly as he wanted to according to him. It was the dismemberment and not the murder itself. That disgusted him after Friedel rota been missing for a couple of days. His France reported missing.

"Long. We'll delve into Fritz's dark work after this break. Now back to the story. At twenty one years of age Fritz Harmon was having the time of his life while serving in the German army for the second time, but things were about to change in October of nineteen o one Fritz again collapsed during a training exercise. He was hospitalized with dizzy spells and kept under observation for four months during which time doctors tried and failed to determine what was causing him to repeatedly lose consciousness Fritz suffered from fits of weakness and mental deficiency. It seems that for much of this time he was delirious unable to focus and babbling incoherently after four months Fritz was transferred to the ward for nervous disease doctors there decided that his previous diagnosis the one equivalent epilepsy had actually been dementia. Pre Cox more commonly known today as schizophrenia at the time the diagnosis dementia. Pre Cox were mostly given when patients experienced. Loss of memory and an inability to pay attention, the delusions we associate today with schizophrenia. We're not usually described until the diagnosis was broadened and renamed schizophrenia during the early twentieth century, according to the doctors Fritz dementia. Pre Cox have been cured but not before causing permanent brain damage Fritz Harmon was judged to be unfit for military service and permanently. Invalid at this point in his life for it's been described by three different doctors as possibly epileptic incurably deranged and formerly schizophrenic. It seems medical professionals didn't know what to make of its Harmon their analyses were further complicated by the uneven diagnostic criteria for mental disorders of the time. All they could agree on was that he was sick and unsuited for military service. He was discharged from the army for medical reasons again in nineteen oh two at the age of. Twenty two Fritz was livid to be back in Hanover. He felt suffocated by his engagement to earn. A but did enjoy the false appearance of normalcy at provided he had gone from a job which gave him a sense of prestige in the army back to demeaning job working for his father Ali soon after Fritz returned to Hanover. He and Ali got into a ferocious argument about Fritz's ability to work only claimed that Fritz was not mentally ill and was just acting sick. In order to avoid earning. A living the accusation particularly infuriated Fritz since his condition had forced him out of a position. He enjoyed the army the fight culminated in Ali suing Fritz for attempted blackmail and physical threats. The case was thrown out when Fritz's siblings refused to corroborate all these claims when the lawsuit was dropped Fritz started another lawsuit suing his father for knowingly making false accusations. This time for his siblings refused to back him up. Up likely wanting to keep both their brother and father out of jail, the Harman's siblings changed their stories and testified that Fritz had indeed made physical threats against Ali the threats only got more aggressive Fritz threatened to kill his father on multiple occasions. He also threatened to turn into the police for some past crime Fritz claim to know about Fritz also grew more violent his mother had passed away the previous year while Fritz was in the army, perhaps this experience rekindled a rage toward Ali that he had held onto for years or maybe all he had finally pushed for its to his breaking point, even though all Harman's case was dropped. He had demanded that Fritz undergo yet, another psychological examination in connection with the charges. The court agreed and ordered the evaluation to be carried out. It's unclear why all he asked for such an evaluation when he maintained for years that Fritz was not truly mentally ill. Nevertheless. The evaluation proceeded and once again produced a new diagnosis a psychologist named Dr Andre pronounced that though Fritz was morally inferior and of little intelligence. He was not mentally unstable with this diagnosis Fritz avoid being sent back to a mental institution relieved for its reconciled with his father the following year. Their relationship improved so much in fact that Ali lent money to Fritz and his fiancee earner to open a fish monkey where they sold fresh seafood. The business was largely run by earner and was purchased in her name Fritz got a job as an insurance salesman, but quit almost immediately. After receiving a notification from the army, though, it had been two years since he had been discharged the army officially classified for its as medically unfit to work anywhere in Germany this brought a slight increase to his army, pension, and lent. Some credibility to his previous claims that he could not. A job. But things never went for his way for long that same year earn a- once again pregnant with Fritz ze child ended their four year engagement for its who had never been the most attentive partner had been going out more often and staying out later. He used the new free time he gained from not working to assault. Young boys more frequently and commit burglaries. He all. But ignored earn except for when he needed money, the final straw came when Fritz publicly accused her of having an affair with a man named Hyneman earn kicked him out since the fish monger was in her name Fritz was left with nothing, but his small monthly military pension Fritz spiraled out he became more involved in the underworld of Hanover. He spent the next ten years in and out of jail for burglary and assault. He did take some legitimate jobs during this time, but never held onto them from nineteen o five to nineteen thirteen. He was fine. Tired repeatedly for stealing from his bosses and their customers. He also got involved in more gruesome enterprises, he met Frau ghoulish disturbed woman he met while working as a clerk for a paint manufacturer and together they sporadically robbed graves depair. Joined with ghoulish is ten year old son and formed a team of these they still paint from their bosses broke into ghoulish neighbor's apartment and burglarized. The local graveyards going so far as to pilfer segments of tombstones eventually Fritz was fired and arrested for stealing the paint. But neither he nor Frau ghoulish was ever caught robbing graves Fritz was angry and alone. He acted on his worst impulses and had no one he cared for. He had little contact with his family and seemed caught in a never ending cycle of rest and release the web to this point. None of his convictions kept him in jail for very long. That was soon to change. In nineteen thirteen at the age of thirty three Fritz was sentenced to his longest prison stint today, he was given five years in jail after police searched his home and found a trove of stolen property linking him to a string of burglaries after a decade living as a criminal destitute and directionless the extended jail time hit for its Harmon hard instead of making tempts to avoid the police or cut some kind of deal as he had done in the past. He accepted the sentence without much complaint in prison Fritz showed signs of his younger self he remained calm and cooperative throughout the long prison term in the final years of his sentence. Fritz was allowed to work as a laborer on the grounds of several nearby manor homes. The arrangement came as a result of the start of World War One. Most able bodied men were enlisted which meant labor was scarce and prisoners were recruited to pick up the slack. It galled Fritz that he couldn't join the war effort. But still he behaved himself despite his background the owners of the manors liked Fritz and even tried to get him released from prison early. Curiously though, he escaped from the asylum years earlier and his new work deal. Afforded him able opportunity to escape again. He served out the entirety of his sentence. He was released in nineteen eighteen seven months before the end of the war. After his release Fritz moved to Berlin he attempted to start a new away from his criminal past. But it seems he couldn't fight as worst inclinations for long. He abruptly went back to Hanover after a few weeks. He stayed with his sister for a short time and then moved into a small apartment in August of nineteen eighteen almost immediately upon returning to Hanover Fritz fell back into his former lifestyle Hanover station, became Fritz's base of criminal operations. He probably station late at night and became well known in the area, he solicited male sex workers and searched for young males, especially runaways and boys traveling alone who could lure back to his home. He promised the boys a place to stay or warm meal. Then once they were in his apartment for its harm lock the door and sexually assaulted them. He also made a living buying and selling stolen property. Around the station due to the poor state of Germany following World War One which Fritz said horrified him. There were plenty of opportunities to traffic stolen, commodities sugar cigarettes and other basic items became difficult to attain legally after the war and their value skyrocketed on the black market. The only thing stopping Fritz? Now was the police who occasionally patrolled the station, but the lack of resources affected law enforcement as well, Germany was forbidden from recruiting army, and the police's ability to arm themselves was extremely limited Fritz capitalized on their desperation and forged a relationship with the police as an informant with limited options, the police accepted for his assistance and used him to conduct stings he posed as a fence or buyer of stolen goods once criminals sold him stolen property for its past the identities of the sellers onto police. The police would then raid Fritz Harman's apartment confiscate the contraband and arrest the people who sold it to him to avoid suspicion Fritz was also arrested during these raids, but was turned loose afterward. Fritz Harmon also were teen Lee performed citizen's arrests at Hanover station. He detained people he deemed suspicious and travelers possession of forged identification. Documents with Fritz help the police were able to crack down on small time criminals and keep watch over Hanover's market Fritz's efforts, gradually won him, the polices. Trust eventually Fritz harm was allowed to prowl Hanover station, whenever he wanted station employees knew of his association with law enforcement, and so never questioned it when Fritz interrogated and occasionally left with young travelers in the dead of night. He now had police protection and easy access to Bonera, boys. Double-crossing his fellow criminals and pa-. Police at the same time thrilled Fritz he loved nothing more than luring people in under false pretenses and striking at them when they least expected it. He flaunted his new invincibility around the station and gradually grew more daring.

"Able to embrace a more positive side of himself. He excelled as a soldier and became a more focused young man, albeit still quiet and reserved he was strong, but lean and spoke with a soft horse voice later described by detective as an old woman's voice. He adopted a pleasant demeanor which mask the scars of his previous abuse. He simply didn't seem like a violent person which would later help him. Void suspicion after five months in the military Fritz passed out during a training exercise. The doctors initially. Diagnosed him with a mild anxiety disorder, anxiety neurosis, but later changed the diagnosis to a condition equivalent to epilepsy. The diagnosis frightened Fritz, and he felt something was irreparably wrong with him. And as we'll see Fritz was examined by doctors and psychologists several times during life and each time was given a different diagnosis this is partially due to the fledgling nature of the field of psychology at the time. Sigmund? Freud's theories of psychoanalysis had not yet become the popular model in the field and mental disorders were not. Well, understood adding to the difficulty mental institutions in Germany became a dumping ground for the elderly and the homeless in the late nineteenth century, which led to overcrowding and poor treatment of patients. It wasn't until twenty years later that conditions started to change soldiers returning after World War One helped to educate the general public about the nature of mental illness. Perhaps if things were different and Fritz have been able to receive more comprehensive treatment at this crucial juncture, his future may not have been so bleak. Unfortunately, we'll never know. Even today. We don't know for sure what mental illness Fritz may have suffered from due to contradictory diagnoses given to him when he was alive at the age of sixteen after fewer than six months of service Fritz was discharged from the army due to epilepsy. He went back to Hanover and his family but returning to his father coaxed for his dark side back into the light by day. Fritz begrudgingly worked at a cigar factory owned by his father Ali he hated being under all these thumb. He began sting out progressively later after work his family didn't ask where Fritz went at night. Maybe they didn't want to know the National Research Council and institute of medicine report juvenile crime juvenile Justice states that delinquent. Behavior can be reduced by placing the offender a goal directed environment. Like, the military many people thrive in such structured environments, but have trouble adjusting to life outside and relapse back into their past criminal behavior. This was the case with Fritz who post military spent his evenings lurking in secluded areas. Most often sellers alleyways he waited for young boys to pass by making sure they were playing alone or on Ahrends for their mothers over the span of several months. Fritz learned many young boys to his hiding spots tucked away dark corners, then he began grabbing and touching them his behavior slowly escalated to sexual assault, the total number of other boys, he assaulted during this period is unknown for its claimed that at the peak of zek titties he committed these crimes on a daily basis. Unfortunately, many of his victims did not report their assault publicly discussing. Sexual acts was taboo at the time. It's also probable that the boys dealt with shame and confusion after being victims of rape, especially considering their young age. But in eighteen ninety six when Fritz was sixteen one of the victims told his mother what happened and the police arrested for its after several months in jail. He was released but was arrested again in eighteen ninety seven just a year later for similar fences on his second arrest. Seventeen year old Fritz Harmon was sent to Hanover hospital where he was evaluated by psychologist named Dr Gert schmo. Focus schmaltz diagnosed Fritz as incurably deranged, and he was sent to a mental institution to be held indefinitely. Fritz despise the asylum. He felt alienated from society has punishment only fan the flames of his latent rage. He was only in the institution for a few months before he managed to escape he fled to Switzerland with his mother's financial assistance. Once again Harmon avoided receiving long term psychiatric treatment, which may have been able to help him although due to the psychological standards of the time. It is possible. No adequate treatment was available especially since he was classified as incurable overcrowded institutions in Germany were known to strap troublesome patients down with leather bonds for hours solitary confinement. Sometimes for days at a time was seen as a humane way to deal with the mentally disturbed. It's unknown. What occurred while Fritz was held in the institution, but something happened which traumatized him enough to spur his escape Fritz feared asylums for the rest of. His life upon his final arrest. He declared quote, hang me. Do anything you like to me? But don't take me back to the looney bin and quote, once he had absconded to Switzerland for its worked as a handyman at a shipyard for sixteen months before returning to Hanover under a false name at the age of twenty thanks to oversights by the police, his previous legal trouble and escape had already been forgotten back home for its was eager to at least appear stable with encouragement from his mother. He began dating the daughter of a neighbor earner lowered too were quickly engaged after earn became pregnant with Fritz's child. She later aborted the pregnancy. But they remained engaged not long. After the engagement Fritz began to feel restless in nineteen hundred Fritz now twenty one was called up for military service, which was mandatory for German men at the time he left Hanover as fast as he could. Although. Fritz had been discharged for medical reasons. For years prior the previous illness was regarded as a temporary condition and Fritz Harmon had not had a blackout since leaving the army in eighteen ninety five even so why did he join the army again so willingly it's possible. He needed to get away from legal trouble and Hanover, despite being engaged to earn a Fritz continued to sexually assault. Young boys though with less frequency than before he also begun to make contacts in the underworld of Hanover that engaged in some petty theft. But there's no evidence the police were aware of his activities. The more likely explanation is he simply enjoyed being a soldier Fritz was placed in a rifle battalion and deployed to the Al sation region of France where he served for a year without incident. He later said his times with the battalion were the best of his life and his superiors described him as an excellent soldier and marksman. But the good times wouldn't. Last long.
