Fresh update on "frisco" discussed on The Herd with Colin Cowherd

"I do know that i heard Brian brought us actually on the radio. The other day former cowboy scout packers had a lotta great guys on his teams over the years. Brett farve reggie white things i. I heard him on the radio. Two days ago. Say the best football player he ever had on his team. Was darren woodson more than any of the other guys that he said darren woodson could impact the game in more ways than anybody else he ever had on his team. That was the best pure just football player he had ever had and so there are plenty of people who recognize it from that personnel in game planning standpoint for sure but in terms of that getting recognized and then getting the respect they deserve. That's a line we've heard a little bit From dak prescott talking about You know what he eventually wants to be paid so final question for you here What would you be doing if you were in the front office for the cowboys. Would you be making the argument of of rent. A position to get one of these top quarterbacks. Let's just get one of them. Let doc walk or would you say no just paid back. That's a that's a special football player long. You know what you have you. You already know what you have in that press you know. He's tremendous leader He he showing you on the film on film every single day in. The film doesn't lie every single day. Who he is out on practice field game day easter his grown as a football player is teammates absolutely admire him Guys like myself who've been in the league that played in this game. And i sit there and watch him in one of the luxuries. I do have jane. You know i see you every day but office there at qatar frisco and look out that window overlooking the practice field summertime when there's no one out there and he's not throwing amari cooper or ceedee lamb. He's throwing to these up talking special team guys. He's thrown to the sixth seventh receiver at the hottest days in the afternoon man. This is the guy who killed care less about the cameras on. He just wants to get better. And i'm watching him do this. In a reason why. I'm so passionate about dak prescott because it reminds me of a guy who taught me about work it work it and that's mike. Alertness number eighty eight. His work ethic was single day. He was available every single day down pursell but for others. And that's how you start greatness. That's when you start to bill championship teams when you have players like that and dacca's that guy bobby lied to you because i've got one. What is it about the safety position in dallas that. They can't seem to prioritize it the way they did with you..

Dallas Cowboys Strength And Conditioning Coach Markus Paul Suffers ‘Medical Emergency – Undergoing Medical Tests’

"Paul the cowboy strength and conditioning coordinator was rushed to the hospital early yesterday after collapsing in his office at the team's frisco practice facility about seven thirty yesterday morning and he was of course they They called they called medical emergency responders and was was rushed to a hospital right away and the cowboys didn't release a lot of information. I decided that it happened. You know and that he was undergoing medical testing and and that while even even mentioned the testing errors that was part of what led to the problem. A rumor that that spread that that he had died and a lot of outlets published that he had passed away out. Part of the part of the problem was the fact that they had. They cancelled practice yesterday. because of this and no explanation was given so people thought. Okay this is this is more than just somebody not dislike covid nineteen or something or somebody somebody who had a heart condition and had to be taken the hospital. I saw it on a tweet that my daughter reid tweeted because marcus. Paula graduated from syracuse. In one thousand nine hundred eighty eight and they were outlets in syracuse reporting that he had died and his daughter issued a statement on facebook saying her fifty four year. Old dad was on life. Support in the family was praying for a miracle. That is apparently still the situation this morning. Although we don't know but yes. A lot of a lot of people did report That he had died and apparently some of that and again now. Now we're now we're wandering into You know rumor and speculation but apparently some of that came from one of the cowboys players. Who posted a tweet strongly implied or said that marcus paul had died and they were praying for him and they hope that he was watching over them. And and that sort of thing Tmz reported at ten forty six yesterday morning pacific time. of course. it's two hours. That marcus paul in fact is not dead former new york giants offensive. Linemen tweeted rest in peace coach. Paul you'll be missed so there was a lot of confusion.

React Native at Airbnb with Gabriel Peal

"So do you have any advice for people regarding react native so who should use react native. Who should not use react native. Or i don't mean to make you prescriptive. Maybe you just want to talk about specific strategic decisions but can you help people vet this technology. Yes so this is the golden question. Should i use reacting overnight. And i refuse to give specific. You should use your acne over. You shouldn't but this is what i would say. First of all doing reactnative does not preclude you from ever having to do native android or iowa's so there will unless you hire people who explicitly how to do that. Just be aware that if you do native you will need to jump into andrew s fairly frequently depending on what you're doing and the second one is that when reactnative works it is amazing like i saw we had a couple of teams that had really good experiences with reactive and the productivity and the speed with which they are able to move was like simply off the charts like between hot module reloading which actually works. Reliably you right line of code and shows up on android and ios in like one or two seconds. I think that's really incredible. But would you wind up with. Is these what. I call land mines so everything is going swimmingly. Well and then you hit a little landmine. So i'll give you an example of one We had one instance where sometimes on certain phones even in particular. The pixel was particularly notable for this randomly. We didn't feel like we had made any significant changes. We one out of ten times or so already. Screens would render white. They would never render. And we didn't know what everything seemed. Fine it was initialising. It was hitting the java script but it just simply wouldn't show up on the screen and we're pulling our hair out trying to reproduce reliably figure out what is going on and after i would say a solid week of multiple engineers going heads down trying to figure out what was going on. We discovered that we had removed the initialisation of fresco so frisco is react natives image lending library load images from a network airbnb we glide which is basically. It's a similar library but instead of using theirs we've always used glide and so we just wrapped the image tag in reactnative with our own image view but the reactive library has fresco out of the box and so we we had that included. All we did was removed. Initialisation of that and randomly caused uncertain funds some screens to never under native to this day. We have no idea what the connection was but it spent multiple engineers officer had to spend like an entire week trying to figure out how to make this work again. he's it was released blocker in screens. Were simply not rendering. So this is this is really really bad other issues like the keyboard thing that i mentioned. I think you're like oh. It's just a simple form and you made you. You write the components of the four men like an hour and then you spend two weeks trying to make it. Scroll above the keyboard so things like that are really really difficult for us because it makes it really hard to forecast how long things take or you. End up giving up Even though it's technically possible to make do you want. The amount of effort is to to figure out how to solve. Landmine is not worth the investment.

"But last night I played a new game I'd never played for called Word Slim. And the idea was you'd get a cont. That would have a clue on like hot air balloon and in under a minute you have to clue your partner. You can only use words on cards in your deck. So if it was hot air balloon, for example, you could do what I did and use the word transport old fashioned. Sky. and. They're sort of obviously shouting things out and trying to guess, and if you're playing with Thomas Alinsky, he won't know what that means. All you can do what the opposing team did and just use the word up. And with that one word, they would know that the answer was hot air ballooning. Even, though that team was not married. And hadn't spent every waking hour of lockdown together. So should be more a little bit more telepathic but what are you gonNa do I can't think what other things old-fashioned transport in the sky but anyway, it doesn't matter. Lots of rounds forced us into rather binary way of describing things like, for example, when Thomson Linski queued janitor as man job inside building and I said, afterwards could be a woman Jonathan could be woman but this kept happening in a sort of kept talking to everybody and I wanted everyone to feel comfortable and eventually I said. Ask speed I'd had two vodkas accidentally accidentally said look we're. We don't have time for feminists. Though was that time of went very fast and sometimes you do sink of among agenda. So I do think I am not open to discussing the words I use to describe gala. But one of those hot and I won that round so. I'm a feminist, but I make jokes about my weight sometimes on TV and other women don't like it and they send me lots of DM's about this constantly. But I like to joke about my weight because I find it. Funny. For example, one of the jokes they didn't like was something I said about an elevator I got into an elevator in debonair and it said this lift is overcapacity and I was the only one in it. which made half of the audience laugh. But the other half were worried about my sanity when I did that and just to let you know I just think it's very funny when I don't fit and stuff and I know that's not very feminist of me. But it's funny. I'm a feminist Bart recently among told me that he had a best friend they just so intellectually paired you know they have such brilliant deep conversations and they also have this great are and. They nearly kissed one spot. He pulled back from it because he said, don't lose the friendship but then she said look I really have feelings for you and I really fancy you and you obviously fancy me and this could be perfect and he went I thought. No, I think I'd rather have the friendship. And I just felt for her so much that I said, what happened to men. There was a time when men would be like, yes please sex what has happened to that I mean obviously, that's not what I said to him. That's not right but I, hear the story so much now that Frisco, he's perfect for me I'm perfect for him. He's just like I can take a leave it and I was like, but surely you should try it because in the words of Adel, you could have had it all and With the REGGAE beat and I. Felt. Like if this was a woman, say my best friend is in love with me and I'm not love with him and so I I absolutely boundaries distance because it was a man I was just like I feel sad for her and I think this is going to end in some kinds of wrong combine to the airport. I do feel a bit bad about it but no spot is I should. I'm a feminist, but my boyfriend gets a little of DMZ from women who pretend to be my fans telling in a great I am. And instead of saying things to them, I followed them. and become their best friend. Because they felt anything I just believe. That any person who messages someone after midnight. Oh I mean even slightly before that. I mean. That's all ten pm. Ten there was. A former cups of it's ten. Oh. One is that I feel that's on the ballot. Top Ten you can do as well, but reaching eleven to twelve and onwards. then. And he never easel was just being friendly. An idiot. And I only know this because I too was in my twenties and I'm because of him. He should feel very flattered since I've been with him and in the relationship I've become a better feminist because terrible behavior me telling them what to do.

Oxnard and all of that The weather's much nicer to practicing. elps Jerry Jones build a brand. The cowboys out in California. This kind of thing so having Frisco local be different I think. A good little twist on things especially given what's all going on with the endemic and everything else? Yeah I definitely agree in. The first thing I thought about is when I went to training camp a few years ago in Oxnard. The thing that stuck out to me the most was how nice the weather was and I know the Texas heat net time of years. Something you really. Play around us on. How you think that that's going to to do you, we. We've always made like this ongoing joke that the cowboys got it made when they go to. Oxnard because the weather's nice space. You know they have the the hotel right by the field which we're. GonNa get into those things that they're still going to have at the star. You know feels really nice. Practice in Texas he's a whole different animal. Mean it's humid hot getting hundreds insys. Entirely different than what they've practicing at that time of the year. Long so it's going to be quite different I. Guess I guess we can see. It might be kind of Cliche, but you can kind of see the mental toughness being built. In that kind of weather I mean just. Like you said it's kind of. Made on for the kind of pampered I. Guess you could say because everything right there says the store's not some crappy facility either is standard. The are on happened just a weather that the actor. I think it'd pay off I guess on I know back in college level been different million college level I know Damn Owen would have misbehaved bribes out, and he and he signed his belief said they'll pay off late in the season in fourth quarter is going through. Dad Grind that nobody wants to practice in that and I think he can pay off for the cowboys teen in. We do have a little bit of breaking news, and that is going to be the focus. Around our PODCAST DID WANNA. Start it off with a little bit of breaking news that I just saw actually, and that is the Timmy Jernigan. Deal fell through with the Houston Texans. He had signed a deal old back in free agency with the Texans and that has now fallen through so that puts another town to defense alignment on the market where we don't think cowboys would be interested in a timmy Jernigan. Contract but that is. A Guy! The cowboys are familiar with WHO's been in Philadelphia the last few years. He won't be going to Houston anymore so pretty interesting to see. Isn't that the second time that happened with Houston the so far this year? Thanks. Brian Catch break. It's a rough go at it in a Houston. And and again had some s as far as winning football games and making the playoffs, but as far as building goes wolf snap angry. We did once. On Their D. Line to yeah. Yeah, for sure lined up next to JJ, Watt and some. Guys they have coming up but. We did WANNA. Talk a little bit about some cowboys centric news today, and that is. We have heard from Todd Archer. Was the first guy to break the story that the cowboys will not be hitting to Oxnard. California this year they will be staying home in Frisco to training camp. I feel like everybody kind of had that thought in the back of their mind with all the covid stuff going on. But today it came out Todd's tweet in ESPN report read. The cowboys will not be heading to oxnard California for training camp this summer with the League, directing teams to remain at their own celebrities, because of the coronavirus pandemic, according to multiple sources last week, coach Mike McCarthy, said the staff was planning separate camps schedules for practices at the Stern Frisco Texas as well as Oxnard. Since two thousand twelve. The cowboys have held camp in Oxnard. The League has not made a determination on one training. Camps will open. Coal when you saw that. What was your first initial thought? I like you said we can kind of expected a little bit just because everything going on. Personally selfishly. Given that I live around like tournament and drive from Frisco so flee things so in Baco back and go out and see in practice. Put.

"All is well wherever you are. We hope you're happy. Safe, healthy, practicing, social distancing, and as we have mentioned, we know that there is a lot going on in our world right now and in our country, and we hope that talking about the Dallas cowboys brings you some level of joy I mentioned this episode for Wednesday but it is flying somewhat early. Dropping this Tuesday evening Tuesday late afternoon. Actually we did have a brand new episode of the seven five with myself to ten superbowl champion Tony Casillas. Guessed Edward or some actually go and check that out. The three of US talked about Dak. Prescott Jimmy, Johnson and a bunch. We talked about Jimmy in the hall of fame enshrinement. May Be happening a different way, or we really don't know obviously so much is known about the summer, but something that is known something that we had been wondering about for a long time is the status of training camp and I guess. I shouldn't say that we know the status we at the very least, though no. The location on Tuesday afternoon. It was reported that the NFL has told all of its teams that they. They must stay at their team facilities for this summer's training camps. That's almost exactly what Adam schefters. tweet reads verbatim and a lot of NFL teams hold their training camps at their facilities. If you've watched hard knocks you've you've seen you know how different teams like the Houston Texans more often than not have hosted it in Houston kind of right by their stadium, the forty niners or a team that does that the Patriots. As well out of teams are kind of in their own neck of the woods. Sometimes teams go to a certain place. Like the Texans went to the greenbrier once. But the Dallas cowboys have obviously held their training camp in oxnard California for basically all of the entire Jason Garrett era. Almost all of it the last time the cowboys held training camp anywhere but oxnard. California was in two thousand and eleven, and it was in San Antonio then. We've talked about that before I've before ever living in San, Antonio Myself. I went to cowboys training camp in in the Alamo City, and it was great and Casey Phillips from Tampa Bay buccaneers on. She talked about her experience, Antonio and so I know. You know throughout my life. Here in the to ten a lot of San Antonio. INS would love to see cowboys training camp return, but hard to beat Oxnard I mean. If you've ever been to cowboys camping talks yard, California, the weather's great, and it's amazing, and it's California and whatnot, but obviously our world has been drastically impacted by the COVID, nineteen, pandemic and social distancing. Is Our way of life, and traveling as we know, it has been significantly changed for who knows how long and so we'd all been wondering what was going to happen with training camp in. Now. The NFL said you gotta stay home in. The cowboys are fortunate that they have. You know the Star and Frisco and last week Mike McCarthy when he met with reporters, kind of I thought he was dropping breadcrumbs, or at least preparing people Mike McCarthy mentioned that the cowboys had an oxnard plan and had Frisco plan and I thought that was the opening of the door because. I just want to one day randomly. Say Hey, we're going to Frisco you. WanNa have at least you know prepared people for that potential, because in other reality. Is You know this is a big bummer for the city of Oxnard you know it's a big boost to their economy. Certainly and you know that happens a lot of things I. I used to have a friend who lives in canton. Ohio and she talked a lot. Lot about how you know the hall of fame and Trimbe in the weekend and the week that they have is so big for that city's economy, and you know the cowboys going to train in Oxnard brings a lot of people, so many people head out to Oxnard to watch the couch train and you know eat at local spots. Stay in AIRBNB hotels. I've talked many times here about toppers pizza, and how incredible it is. So. This is a big bummer I mean I've been fortunate enough to go to oxnard California for cowboys camp the last three years, but with it now in Frisco. Who knows I if you have not listened to the 750 with Ed Order You know at one point. I asked what he thought. Coverage of the NFL could look like in two thousand twenty, because even with the cowboys training at the star they do have an indoor facility and an outdoor facility, obviously and obviously hot and Texas in the summer, so maybe they'll be inside the Ford Center a little bit more than they would be otherwise but. I don't know if fans are going to be able to go. I don't know how many media members are going to be able to go I. Don't know how many credentials they're going to hand out. Things like that I mean there's just so much that is unknown. What we do know now is that training camp will be at the star and Frisco and if you have to be any team staying home for training camp again, you want to be the Dallas cowboys. I think the second team is the Minnesota Vikings. I, don't know the name of their complex I think it's sponsored actually, but it is. It is up there I mean they're they're training. Complex is is is beautiful by. Yeah this is just this is this is our world in so many ways and I think it's smart to err on the side of caution and to be safe. Obviously, safety is the top priority for teams. So, we will see you know if there are any other changes. You know for the NFL. You know as football season approaches, you know. Training camp is scheduled to begin next month as we now are officially in the month of June In the NFL. Is You know as we all know has forged on? They performed free agency and the draft in socially distanced ways, and they're still. You know seemingly going forward with training camp albeit some adjustments like I said some teams won't really have to adjust because they hold training camp at their home venues. Anyway but this is. This is without question. This is a big deal. In we'll see we'll see what all this means. There are still more questions and that is kind of where we're at with all this. There are so many questions and every time you ask a question you start to answer it. You know within those answers you develop more questions and I know. We've all been living our lives that way and so the cowboys will host training camp at the Star and Frisco Oxnard and if you haven't been to Oxnard. I, hope and I pray that someday. Maybe twenty twenty one to cowboys. Get back out there because it really is fine, it really is special. It's the small. Corner of California, that's really beautiful in its own way, and so it is a big bomber that the cowboys won't be able to be out there and. We'll see. We'll see you know what that means and you know what's what's been interesting is in years past is the cowboys have always kind of turned their training camp in California into their first preseason game, obviously typically being in the same state. Typically. They've taken the train. You know sometimes you know it's a huge stay in California and who knows. What all that's going to be now especially with the fact that you know. When Jerry Jones went into the hall of fame, all the cowboys went to Ken to watch that ceremony, and you.

How Europe is responding to the coronavirus pandemic

"Want to start really by having a look at what is happening in this part of the world and certainly how countries In and around a Middle Europa at handled covid nineteen as pandemic some economic powerhouses. The United States of course the UK have had a bit of a miserable time. You could say but Germany and Switzerland are getting back on their feet and even in the last hour or so here in Zurich. We heard the country's main aviation hub of the national carrier. Swiss have outlined an incredibly aggressive relaunch plan. Of course if we go north to the border in Germany LUFTHANSA'S HOPING TO INC. It's bailout package to do a bit of the same well for more on this. I'm joined here in Zurich Rob Cox regular with us. When is the global editor of Reuters breaking views and on the line from start in south western Germany on a Rosenberg as also the line and she is head of Europe and the UK at the political consultancy Sigme Global? Welcome to both of you rob. I wanted to start. Do you think something is up? Maybe in this country I think also we look to Australia and certainly Germany as well as everyone starting to behave as a bit of a block at a time when everyone is supposed to be yes nice nice role in together are we moving into a period where people are maybe trying to score a few points. Released position themselves That look we are open for business. And we're moving ahead here. We're kind of in this competitive de Lockdown Mode. Where everybody you know? Calm countries like Switzerland which WanNa score high on the the Doing Business World business indicators and things like that and I think they have something like thirteen hundred. Us companies alone. That have offices or something here so everybody is trying to kind of to ease the ease travel. Do it in the right way. But also the same time to showcase that they've done a good job or a decent job of of battling pandemic of ensuring that their citizens have safe that that and doing it in a sort of you know an intelligent way And in some ways opening opening up the borders as a way to show that off now I think they're quite conservative. You saw you saw. The Federal Council was saying yesterday and in other countries. You know there are still this tension between the politicians as it were and the health professionals at still going on. We're still going to see that for quite some time. But there's definitely a sense of like like let's get moving again But the the the big issue though is you can't just apply what the Swiss do or the Austrians due to say London or Dublin or Perez and I think so. The worry is a little bit like we have these fights over tax policy right That you have this sort of race to the bottom in some ways and I think that's it's one has to be quite careful. So if the Swiss open up or the Germans and people say Look Frankfurt's open for business in Syracuse. Open for business. The worry is that these other guys. I don't know or London that engage a well. We better do it quickly. Problem is that there's no one size fits all for battling this pandemic Rosenberg. When you look from your side of the border but maybe across to Austria and Switzerland do you feel that may be an of course? Federal Council Minister over in Vienna yesterday front from Switzerland. Do you feel that the dock nations are starting to to get work in a bit of unison? Work as Mitteleuropa to say that we can together be the the engine that we can point direction. We know that this is a time of of not great central leadership. I'm not sure if there's really a cross border collaboration as as that. I think it's more happening more here. Is that individual states within Germany. I using this as an opportunity to profile themselves when you look at pandemics throughout history typically they benefit smaller entities smaller countries smallest state smaller city states. And exactly the same has happened in this pandemic and Jimmy Away is positioned the way is positioned also because of its highly federalized decentralized system which means you have sixteen individual states that can make their own lockdown and opening up decisions and these decisions currently being made. They're all over the place and I would say there's kind of a rather than we're in this together. I would say there's a little bit of a rivalry at the moment towards who can open up. Fossa who is more concerned with the health of individuals citizens than the others? So it's still pretty much an looking inwards would say Germany. Do you think that some of that also ladder is up though? I mean whether it's whether you're talking about Bio You're talking about no Don Volya that obviously people who are sitting at the Foreign Ministry in Berlin. There were trying to figure out. How do they put this into a concerted message Which they can put across globally? I get the sense. is certainly in Switzerland while the Swiss like to talk about being humble and they don't WanNa talk about having had a good pandemic you do get the sense here that they are trying to. Of course push their message. This is a country that is going to be open for business. If you need to come to Europe And hopefully do need to come to Europe to have a meeting. Then maybe you might consider coming here. I and I'm wondering if Berlin regardless of what it's doing with a federal structure with the states are doing they're trying to have some kind of unified message or no yes. Of course ultimately there's a lot of coordination still trying to be made on on the national level. Am I do think that Germany has certainly benefited from this Kobe crisis? It has turned a crisis into an opportunity and for a variety of reasons and I think Germany ultimately when you look at where Jimmy Stewart's just before the Kobe crisis it wasn't quite a weak economic position that was stagnation that was not enough of investment. Going on into key sectors of the economy that was all these arguments about stepping up fiscal stimulus and spending and constant pushback from the government that wanted to stick to strict fiscal prudence. All of this is different now. The government is saving business left right and center splashing out it's investing and the economy. The Gym Mindset has changed to away from Frisco prudence that was evidenced of course the supporting joint debt with other European nations. And so in a way. Jimmy's kind of taken an advantage from Kobe. In repositioning itself. And I think if you ask me what does Jiminy and the EU stand in one. Two years down the line. I think Germany will clear when I hear on that we just before we went on air we were talking and you just touched on Dublin Dublin. Of course as as essential in Europe which has done very very well at tech. But we're now in a moment right now we're of course. Companies are more mobile than ever. And certainly when you look at some of those players who are who are in Dublin. Of course their headquarters being On on the. Us West Coast yet. There is mobility They move around the going to look of course for the best tax breaks That are out there. Is this also time and again I mean. Certainly you see the power of the money that various spends on go and put your headquarters or least your your regional or European headquarters in Munich. For example do you see this kind of acceleration? Absolutely the ease of doing business index. This is this is going to be part of it. Everyone's going to look at how you did it during this crisis And I think and how quickly you were able to come out of it and I think come. Countries like like Switzerland Like some of the Nordic countries that have have done a pretty good job a relatively good job relative to France or the UK or Spain or Italy are so they're going to have a better pitch to make an a country like Ireland. Which is you know punches. Well above its weight when it comes to global headquarters for I say European headquarters for many of these TECH COMPANIES. The facebooks and people like that that is also

"In for a tourist do you? So that's I think what it became Potter virtual contentious frock. Yes. Says canes book ruined the nickname people wanted to seem proper and cultured. So they listened to Kane and shunned it and now people like Joey Wilson wanna know, why canes opinion should matter more than there's I mean Cain was born in Sacramento. So that's the question. Why does it upset you to call? It. I go give us a reason. And who are you to tell us what we can. And can't do them. I'm from here, I'm born and raised here. So I think I got rights to call it wherever I want working on this story. One day, I grabbed a lift and got to talking with the driver a guy named Lorenzo. Beasley are grew up on the bottom of the city and small neighborhood called visitation valley. More of the I guess you call it the urban community like like blacks are Spanish in the city. Those people always grew up using that way Lorenzo says you hear it in visitation valley of play like view feel more Charles hill the mission. Especially the mission. So the strong there is. I asked him who doesn't like Frisco slug a higher class of people. I guess like people who stay like a knob meals and stuff it look at it. It's like slang as definitely a a been a snob. The host nothing volved in it for Lorenzo whether or not you use Frisco says what neighborhood you're from now when I met Lorenzo I was on my way to the baby you I met a Stanford linguist Theresa Pratt at a restaurant known for its chicken lanes. Yeah. I'll take that one to ten with the lemon chicken. Lemon in a drink. Where at Frisco fried. I believe it's mostly fried chicken that looks like they have some fish on the menu in the baby you on third street. Pratt said when you wanna talk about language and word choice like nicknames. You're virtually always talking about money and power institutions that have power people that have power haven't have an interest in maintaining that the way that they speak is the right way to spend great because that helps them because it it's coupled with this ideology, that's really widespread that there is a quote right way to speak or a way of speaking that gets you ahead language has cultural capital, right? So it's something like knowing exactly where to put your forks at the end of a meal. So the words we use are really markers to show other people where we fit in to society and nicknames are even more like that knowing which one to use and which one not to use is kind of like telling people where you belong which gets us back. Back to Reno. Our question asker who suddenly felt out of place because she was called out for using this word in the wrong way for someone. Correct. The on that kinda like oh. I haven't wrong this whole time. Well, Rena we have some good news for you. That's right. Herb cain. The arbiter of taste eventually flip-flopped on Frisco. A couple of times in the ninety s we've built our anti Frisco bias on some shaky ground Novyny. I have to ask you after all this reporting. Are you pro or anti Frisco, definitely pro Frisco, it's punchy and kind of cute totally endearing and I've got Joey Wilson the guy got rights to call it wherever I want and even to pock on my side. Stolz skull. Plus is this city really a place for snobs thinks many anytime, and thanks to reading hang for her question this week in Vinnie story, you also heard the voices of onc- ceann, Linda Lucero, Tom Scholz, and Bob Brandis who are interviewed on the streets of burner heights and the mission. I'm Lydia Allen price bay curious is made at K Q E D in Frisco. "So you wanna know how annoyed people get by Frisco. Pretty annoyed. No, I keep it as San Francisco when people say like Frisco, or they did bothers me for some reason friscos opposed to be not the right way to call. It just never have liked the sound of it seems really truncated and kind of almost offensive how about s. Possibly and Frisco. No. No, no, no. Clearly, people take this really personally. But despite all that hate there are a lot of people who love Frisco, like the owners of this tattoo shop in the mission is called Frisco tattooed Joey Wilson, he and his wife Lila own this place now born and raised in San Francisco. Joey's the kind of guy you want on your side if a fight breaks out in a bar. He wears sunglasses indoors he's got lots of tattoos. There's one on his wrist in fancy lettering. That says Frisco, what parents always called it that there were blue collar workers. It was just something that was instilled in me as a kid when I was a little kid. I think I was twelve or thirteen those a bike shop called Frisco. Choppers and race down there on the bus down Valencia street just to buy a t-shirt that said Frisco in big bold letters because that was like the coolest today. Joey's in the Hells Angels the Frisco chapter. Joe his wife. Lila says they have lots of friends who've love Frisco as much as they do a lot of our friends. Join is friends are kind of small business owners in the city here, actually and really are owners of the name Frisco. We have Frisco boxing. We have four thousand five clothing. We have. We had Frisco choppers that years back and just really the kind of route and background of that name in really took it far with t shirts and tattoos. And you know, religious blew up that name sounds like joy Wilson inherited this word from members of his family, and we actually heard from other people who associate this word with an earlier generation. Yeah. I think they're partly right. I met up with Charles frock you to see how far back this name goes. He's the founder of the San Francisco historical society. He says nobody knows for sure. But he does have a theory. I wanna fill who's been drinking too much. Good to be back numbers Frisco. You know, it's kind of contraction in that makes more sense frock you think's Frisco popped up in the late eighteen hundreds maybe on some sheet music. Others think maybe during the gold, rush Frisco was probably in its heyday when the ports were strong here around the time of the second World War in the nineteen forties. Kind of a working round period of time. The poured was thriving lots of spoiled ninety factories here. Those kind of friscos kind of because I said it was kinda working toward the other thing too. No, not long after people started using it. Other people started hating it. They said only out of town or is used it tourists, basically, San Francisco's self proclaimed emperor. The Brit Joshua Abraham Norton supposedly banned the use of Frisco in eighteen seventy two and said whoever used it would have to pay twenty five dollar fine. But that's not been verified one person. We do know hate in the word. Herb cain. Herb cain. The revered writer for the San Francisco Chronicle when he wrote about the city people listened hurricane made San Francisco. Oh into almost a village by the fact that he has caused a very popular was kind of lingua franca about about the cane came along after the city had grown from a dinky west coast outpost into a gold, rush BoomTown with saloons and devante Trie and later into a city that looked more like the east coast and European cities wanted to imitate he wanted San Francisco to be more classy more chic his book. Don't call it Frisco came out in nineteen Fifty-three. Don't call it Frisco. It's San Francisco because it was named after Saint Francis of Assisi, and because Frisco is a nickname. That reminds the city uncomfortably of the early brawling boisterous days of the Barbary coast and the cribs and sailors who were Shanghaied and because Frisco shows disrespect for a city that has now big and proper and respectable. And because only tourists call a Frisco anyway, and you don't want to be taken..
