We hope that with our public efforts that we will empower those affected by physical, emotional and sexual abuse to share their stories. And we're letting you know that we're in this culture and we support you. There have been growing complaints of hazing within the school's football program. This is deplorable, appalling but it is not surprising. first The lawsuit has been filed against now fired football coach Pat Fitzgerald at Northwestern. More are expected to follow. Civil rights attorney Ben Crump and other attorneys are representing about 15 athletes. arrival Upon to campus we were thrown into a culture where physical, emotional and emotional abuse was normalized. Larry and Tribune Editor Stephanie Finucane Discuss Systemic Racism

"Good morning, mister elder. Morning. Stephanie phonon, I'm the opinion editor at the tribune in San Luis Obispo. And I'm going to return to the topic of systemic racism. On your website, you say it's outrageous that America is being demonized a systemically racist. Yeah, that seems to fly in the face of what we see around us and our reporting. For example, tab Webber just completed a series on redlining in Fresno and how it prevented black Asian and Latino people from buying property and preferred areas. And that has ramifications to this day. A national survey just ranked west Fresno is one of the worst places in the nation for a black person to live. And it was the only place in the west to receive such a bad ranking. How do you respond to that? Well, I'm back in 1991. There was a black Harvard sociologist named Orlando Patterson. He's still there. 1991. And he said, America, despite its flaws, is the least racist majority society in the world provides more opportunities for blacks than any other country in the world, including all of those of Africa. 1997, Time Magazine, CNN, time teamed up, you'll study a black teens and white teams. And they asked them both were the racism was a major problem in America. Again, this is 1997. And both of them said, yes. But then they did something that I rarely seen, any study do. They ask black teens if racism was a big problem, a small problem or no problem in your own daily life. 89% of black teens called racism a small problem or no problem in their own daily life. In fact, more black teens than white team said, failure to take advantage of available opportunities is a bigger problem than racism. I want to repeat that. More black teens and white teens said, and this is pretty much verbatim. Fail I want you to take advantage of available opportunities is a bigger problem than racism in

'Smash and Grab,' a Product of Moral Decay

"The smash and grab craze happening across America. It's just another sign of moral decay. What we're seeing happening all across the country and this really started during Floyd palooza and it's continuing. Is hundreds if not thousands of criminals that go into stores, grab whatever they want and then leave. Now, of course, in San Francisco, they will not prosecute theft unless it's over a certain dollar when I think the dollar amounts like $950. But cut 50, here's a small business owner in Democrat run Oakland, California, saying he might just shut down his business because he says, I can't take this many break ins, go to cut 40. I don't know how many more incidents like this. We can take to keep our doors open. One of the owners of renegade running Victor Diaz is contemplating keeping his doors open for business in Oakland after they were most recently shattered late Sunday Night. And cut 5 a security guard was killed over the weekend. You probably didn't hear about this. As these criminals, these thugs in these vigilantes are just going in and taking whatever they want. This is happening all across the country, by the way. And what happens is a group of 30 or 40 criminals show up to a store and they just flood it and they take what they want and no one dares stop them. Play cut 5. So these gangs of smash and grab thieves raising alarms across the nation, a couple of shops getting hit over the holiday weekend in Fresno, California. It's not just California where it's going on. The organized looting now spreading other parts of the country as well. Also, when I mentioned Kevin ishida, he was a Bay Area security guard who was killed over the weekend during one of these smash and grab deals. So who benefits from this type of anarchy? Remember, that's the most important question that you can ask with any of these things. When things start to unravel and they don't make sense, you need to ask yourself the question who benefits? Well, one more piece of sound cut 9, Fox News report on a Home Depot that was looted for crowbars and mallets. Don't wear everybody. They just want the crowbars because they're going to be building swing sets. That's right. Play cut 9. A group of about 15 to 20 suspects stormed a Home Depot store in Lakewood and stole crowbars, mallets, and sledgehammers before jumping in a bunch of getaway vehicles. Some now fear what those sleeves might plan on doing with those tools. These robberies are leaving many holiday shoppers on edge.

Fresno County Health Officials Seeing an Increase of Covid Cases

"With new covid cases growing across the country, Fresno County health officials say they're noticing a surge in cases and younger populations, according to the data shared by the Health Department. Younger age groups are driving this surge. Now, If we look back to January of this year, when Covid 19 cases were surging people 65 older made up a big chunk of those early cases. Nearly 25%. Now they make up less than 15%. But 18 and younger category has done the opposite. They were at about 15% back in January. Now they make up nearly 20%. This is concerning because the under 18 population is not all eligible to be vaccinated. And so their only protection is the people around them. The Fresno County Department of Public Health is urging people to mask up if you're not vaccinated, the rules really haven't changed. That's Fox 26 news reporter. Shelby brought show,

California Wildfires Have Decimated the Giant Sequoia

"Wave comes amid a drought has dried up vegetation, increasing fire danger. There have been a number of small wildfires around California this week. But thus far, the state has avoided the kind of fierce gusts of wind that drove last year's devastating blazes. Last year's sq. FT. Than previously five. Some 30 to 40% of all the giant sequoias within the fires, footprint or incinerated by the severity of the flames. Researches explained that the intensity of their fire was brought on by drought conditions, fire prone undergrowth and a legacy of fire suppression together with climate warming, stressing the entire ecosystem. Ecuadorian files. This report from Fresno. The devastating castle fire in the southern Sierra Nevada last year may have killed between 31% and 42% of all the large giant sequoias in the footprint of that blaze. National Park Service report says that translates into a stunning loss of somewhere between 7500 and 10,600 large giant sequoia trees that are more than four ft. In diameter. When neither responded he filed a complaint with the internal affairs bureau then proceeded to repeatedly call the fresno pd asking for updates on on the case ultimately accusing them of squashing his complaint and this is all from his blog. What's more it wasn't just the fresno pd that had it out for him. It was everyone literally like. He claimed a homeless man who stopped him as he was walking down the street and asked him if he wanted to buy a cellphone. Oh he was clearly a plant who stole john's co workers cell phone and use it as a ruse to get close to laying and follow him frame or whatever. Potential business clients were considered suspicious for various reasons. He was being framed for having child pornography which had been planted somewhere in his home by law enforcement officials. And we all have trackers on us constantly with our fucking phones so because if you're like me you're worried about getting mugged or kidnapped and then you'd have your phone so somebody could do find you know they could find via my phone so i don't want to shut those settings off but at the same time. Just keep a bunch of posted search coupons a sticky notes in your pocket with like different You now just put your dna write your name on it. Just leave it around if you go missing. Just leave a trial breadcrumbs. That's what i'm saying. All right let's wrap this up so like what did we learn here. I mean learn anything. Have we come any closer to the truth. I mean i don't really know. I'm not a huge conspiracy theory person but this piece is definitely weird. I guess if. I had to make some sort of decision on what happened. I would say it's a little bit of both. I think john laying may have been living with mental illness. He also may have been watched or harassed by the cops to some degree and maybe because he might have had mental illness It could have pushed him over the edge and led him to self harm himself. I don't know for certain. But if i had to make a guess i'm gonna go with that. Maybe also he didn't intend to kill himself. Hence the superficial stab wounds and you know. He also allegedly turned off the security cameras inside of his home so maybe he wanted to frame the fresno police department and make it look like they try to attack him somehow inside his house on fire but things just got out of control with the fire and he ended up succumbing to the smoke inhalation and his death was an accident. Didn't mean for it to go. That far i think you just created a new conspiracy theories possibly. I didn't see anyone mentioned that. No me neither. But i'm sure we. I mean god. There's so much out there. Someone could've come up with that and we just may not have come across it for sure somebody right now. Who's like on right. "I was just going to say so all women who get pissed off or and tweet about it or bitch about some guy that did like that hit on them and was gross on the subway. Like we've all been flagged by beware or if you like right road rage or something. Because you're like there's so many there's a lot of that's like fucked up about this. So much that's fucked up about this councilman clinton jay. Oliver a libertarian. Leaning republican said beware was something like out of a dystopia in fiction. Novel and ask fresno's chief of police. Jerry dyer a simple question. Could you run my threat level. Now dyer agreed. This can return oliver as a green but his home came back as a yellow possibly because of someone else who had previously lived at his address. A police official said even though it's not me that's the yellow guy. Your officers are going to treat. Whoever comes out of that house in his boxer shorts as the yellow guy or even the right guy. I mean who knows what the threat level is but yes. The implication is the hat. Whatever your threat level is be more force. Police are going to use on you. Yes and as oliver said. That may not be fair to me or anybody. That is legitimately big brother. Shit right there. I mean the shit is absolutely terrifying to me. I did a few searches to see how many police departments use this technology. And i really couldn't find much. And i would assume that most police departments would wanna keep that hush hush if they were using this type of technology i mean fresno has been very it but who knows how many other police departments are using this. But linking your social media post to your address in background and driving records and who knows what the fuck else so that cops can access that if you get pulled over for speeding or you know some other stupid thing like not completely stopping at a red light that may flag you as a dangerous threat is definitely next level dystopia in future type shit except in the future. It's like actually having right now. What's really disconcerting to me. And i don't know why didn't pick up on this like prior to recording but i guess i didn't it didn't quite sink in for me. Is that this in trotto. They are the holders of this software and the fact that there's no transparency as to the coding their their system like they're the rating system to all that stuff that is horrifying and that should never be something that falls into the hands of any law enforcement official or government or anything like oh that freaks me out but yeah i mean there's no logical reason that license plate scanner should have access to anything but police records actually license. Plate scanners don't access police records if you run someone's licensed play. It doesn't show any of your history except for like vehicle information. So let's say you had a like a murder warrant or your car was us in a child abduction case or something like that then. An investigator can put a warrant into the system. And attach it to your car. But i believe just a regular ron of a car. Only shows registration information Okay thank you. Don't quote me on that. But i won't i won't but like you should. Yeah i get it like should've should've karbi reported stolen or maybe the cops are responding to a bolo beyond the lookout alert. I can see but the whole wording. Mass shootings and terrorism argument is total bullshit. Theoretically we have government agencies that are way more equipped for that kind of stuff..

Some say laws are needed to protect the public. In many instances people have been unaware that the police around them are sweeping up information and that has spawned controversy as officers respond to calls. Beware automatically runs the address. The searches return the names of residents in scans them against a range of publicly available data to generate a color coded threat level for each person or address green yellow or red. He also worries that the system might mistakenly increase someone's threat level by misinterpreting innocuous activity on social media like criticizing the police and trigger a heavier response by officers. Beware as color. Coded levels uses a very unrefined gross technique. A police call is something that can be very dangerous for a citizen. The fresno city council called a hearing on beware in november. After constituents raised concerns one councilmember referred to a local media. "Evidence proving this one way or another But i just wanted to come back briefly to the whole statement. That was initially made about john lang stabbing himself in the back in why that was retracted. And why that evidence was not found in the final autopsy report and whether or not it would have been possible so knowing me i probably have a knife out for some other reason trip and fall on it and kill myself by stabbing myself on the back of that way because i'm clumsy as fuck. I'm tackle you would trip and fall and stab yourself in the back trust me. I'm sure i can figure it out i've done. I've hurt myself in ways as remember earlier. Mindy when i said i had some very scary big brother shit that i found i do i do. Actually what is that about right so we are going to cover this part now so while researching this case i came across this post on reddit from someone who. I'm not sure if they would want us to use their handle or not. So i'm not going to say their name. But they said i live in fresno and have followed laying story since before. This all happened. He was first brought to the spotlight when he caught fresno pd targeting poor neighborhoods illegally. They got their new license plate. Scanners which linked to their main database which also linked to social media and many other things. This new system was widely reported on basically it spit out a threat score based on a number of official and unofficial sources of information. What they do is scan the parking lots of low income neighborhood markets and when a high thrust score came up they'd randomly pull that person over when they left the parking lot in badger them to search the car. This is akin to stopping a person on the street and demanding. They empty their pockets. It's constitutional laying reported on this from his blog in the months leading up to his suicide when he died. I followed up on the story closely. It was it was a close to home conspiracy theory that piqued my interest. So this person actually believes that lane killed himself. I want to that link that the person posted to see what this technology was that the police were using. And if there is any truth any of this so the link was to an article from january tenth two thousand sixteen from the washington post in it was written by justin juvenile the links also going to be in our episode description. If you wanna read it. I'm not going to cover everything. It was a pretty long article. But it's definitely worth a read. But some of the highlights are as follows as a national debate has played out over mass surveillance by the national security agency. An essay a new generation of technology. Such as the beware software being used and fresno has given local law enforcement officers unprecedented power to peer into the lives of citizens. Police officials say such tools can provide critical information that can help uncover terrorists or thwart mass shootings ensure the safety of others.

"Aka your home wireless network and your comment. And the exact time it was posted the fresno pd would be able to trace your ip address and find out where you live what you post post etc oddly. John lang's website with named jodi murray dot com was being a smart ass by naming it. After the person who he thought was an informant. His posts are worth a read. And again we will post the links to what i found in the show notes. Okay so sharon. What is next in this crazy town. Banana pants of a story all right. So as we mentioned john laying thought he was being harassed and was going to be killed by the fresno. Pd he actually had a youtube page and he posted videos from his surveillance camera. So let's talk about that. There are seventeen surveillance videos on his youtube page. His channel is called laying marine marine as in the branch military. That he belonged to his youtube. Page is still up so you can go check it out for yourself and watch all these videos link is going to be in the show notes as well so all videos were recorded with his front home security camera. The first video was posted on may twentieth of two thousand. Fifteen and the last video is dated january sixteenth of thousand sixteen just four days prior to his death. Lanes theory is that since he was criticizing the fresno police on the local news site the fresno bee they were able to track his ip address and find out where he's lived mini explained all that previously so he had cameras set up to monitor his house to see. I'm not really sure if he put up the cameras just to see if the police were surveying him or if he had these cameras up for a while but the videos in start appearing on youtube until twenty fifteen and he had issues going on with the police since like two thousand nine. Is that right many. At least that we know of and honestly like there were it. Sounds like there were quite a few cameras. So i don't know because he had indoor and outdoor cameras right. So yeah yeah so. Let's talk about a few of the videos that he posted. Because i definitely have questioned. Why do too yeah on these videos so this is from. This is a quote from the first video that laying ever posted he states ford crew cab. That stalked me at my resident. Numerous times on twelve thirteen fourteen. This truck belongs to fresno sheriff personnel was stalking me that saturday morning on twelve thirteen fourteen truck is visible in timeframes and then he lists couple timeframes and then goes on to say five minutes. After this incident. I received a hang up call from this number. He list number. Which i'm not going to be reading because i don't know who this number belongs to and i don't want anyone calling this number. But then he goes on to say. The owner of this phone number is a member of the fresno sheriff's office and just a quick description. And all you see in the video is at the start of it. There's a truck that pulls up actually really more in front of his neighbors house like they're driving but they kinda pull over to the side for a bit and then pull back into traffic and drive off and then towards the end of the video you see a what looks like a similar truck to simply driving by the house. Quick note on the videos. Because i know i had to look it up to get some perspective than ness avenue lang street..

Republicans Push Back On Historic Nomination Of Deb Haaland For Interior Secretary

"And Natural Resource is committee today held confirmation hearings for New Mexico representative Deb Holland to be the next secretary of interior. A confirmation would be historic. She would be the first Native American Cabinet member in the nation's history. Her nomination by President Biden has also been criticized by oil State Republicans because of her stated opposition issues such as to fracking in the Dakota access pipeline. Ecuadorian reports from Fresno. The history being made by Deb Holland's nomination was hailed by all on the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee, even those who are skeptical of her policy views The special nature of the moment was evident as the New Mexico congresswoman introduced herself to the committee and the nation. I spent summers in the Sita, or small village on Laguna Pueblo, the location of my grandparent's traditional home. It was there that I learned about my culture from my grandmother by watching her cook and by participating in traditional feast days and ceremonies, it was in the cornfields with my grandfather, where I learned the importance of water. And protecting our resource is where I gained a deep respect for the Earth Committee chair, Joe Manchin outlined the immensity of the task. The Interior Department manages 500 million acres of land. 1/5 of the entire country. The 70,000 employees oversee Parks Monuments Wildlife refuge because dams, reservoirs and canals. It also supervisors mineral resource lands that produced 20% of the nation's energy. Citing previous statements Deb Holland had made about fossil fuel production. Wyoming Senator John Barrasso, the committee's ranking member, set the theme which Republican members came back to repeatedly. Oil production in federal lands and oil pipelines, especially the Dakota access pipeline. By signing an executive order to ban all new oil coal gas leases on federal lands. The president is taking a sledgehammer to Western states economies. Ban on federal leasing could result in 33,000 workers losing their jobs in Wyoming. Representative Hollins home state of Wyoming, 62,000 workers stand to lose their jobs. Holland also faced questions over her appearance at protests of the Dakota access pipeline in North Dakota before she was elected to Congress in 2018. Holland said she went there in solidarity with Native American tribes and other water protectors, who felt they were not consulted adequately before the multi state pipeline was approved. President Joe Biden has sense next the project. Conservative

The South African variant is one of several that's been identified in California. The presence of the new virus variants marked a dim note in an otherwise upbeat news conference by the governor today. Justina Honest and reports California's first two cases of the South African Corona virus mutation were detected in Alameda and Santa Clara counties. Governor Gavin Newsom made the announcement during a trip to mark the state's five million vaccination in Fresno. We have 159 identifiable cases of the UK variant in the state. We have 1203 identifiable west Coast variance in the state there two types of West Coast variants. I said yesterday that we had not identified any Brazilian variants, and that's true Yesterday. I also said we hadn't identified any South African variance that's no longer true. As of a few hours ago, we have the first reported cases of South African variants. Two cases have been reported to Stanford, Newsome says. In total, the state has identified less than 1500 cases of variant covert 19 strains. South African variant was first identified in the nation late last month. In South Carolina. Scientists and health officials feared the new variants could be more contagious, less responsive to treatments like vaccines and more likely to re infect people who already had the virus. Experts say One of the mutations may become a dominant Corona virus strain in the coming months, and if it's resistant to treatment, another surge could be looming. But until then, Newsome says Corona virus infection rates, hospitalizations and cases continue to decline in California 34% decline in

Los Angeles County Shatters COVID-19 Case, Death, Hospitalization Records

"With ICU space at crisis levels in some population centers. The start of vaccine distribution this week gave everyone a desperately needed dose of good news. California Governor Gavin Newsom embraced that, while also warning that the nation's most populous state is struggling with the viruses Deadliest wave yet. Light at the end of the tunnel. But we're still in the tunnel. Southern California and the state's Central Valley are reeling less than 2% of ICU beds There are available and many hospitals are overwhelmed. Already this week, single day death records have been broken in San Diego, Santa Clara and Los Angeles County. L. A on Wednesday hit a record daily high of 131 covert 19 deaths. Barbara for Air is the county's public health director. Every hour on average, two of our neighbors, family members and friends. Are dying from Cove in 19. And the virus is rampant in all neighborhoods. Key parts of the state are now in surge mode and opening makeshift hospital areas. But many don't have the staff to manage the extra load, and the state has limited options to try to fix that staffing crisis. Slammed. Hospitals are using emergency rooms to house critical patients, and many are postponing elective surgeries and repositioning surgeons and nurses. Those companies spent nearly two hundred million dollars on a marketing campaign supporting prop twenty two the campaign ads like this one from lift said the measure would actually be good for workers because it comes with a minimum wage and health care benefits for some but if drivers are forced to become employees up to ninety percent of at been striving jobs could disappear to be clear. That's because the gig companies wouldn't hire all those drivers gig drivers in california and around. The country have mixed views on the law. We talked to some of them. Prop twenty two. I voted for. Because i don't want to be an employee doing it as an independent contractor. Make my own hours work when i want to work. I'm glad it wasn't proved one of the best thing about. You know because of were treated like employees or we're not paid like employees. Would it be nice for them to set. Maybe a 401k or retirement plan sure but i wasn't really contributing to that in my other job from this outcome. Maybe they are guaranteeing that hey no matter what you're gonna make so much money per rider per hour. Which in california. In two thousand twenty one would be over fifteen dollars an hour but a study from uc. Berkley says. that number doesn't count for a lot of things.
