"Final hour has arrived. Let's get back to the calls and Clint is up next. In Ohio, good afternoon. Yeah, something here. We have you. Thank you. Sorry, sir. Just bid my dogs. Hey, long time listener, great. I'm a Notre-Dame fan. I love this CC. There's nothing better at nighttime than watch a necessary football here in Ohio. Now, and I trust me, I love the SEC, except Brian Kelly going to LSU. Even though I'm not a Brian Kelly fan, you know, with the loss of every day going down that wide receiver, we have no one really there except blending right now. Who I think had 200 yard last year. So my thing is with more opening up against Ohio State. Now, I get to 15 and a half points, but I'm standing across the board. But what's this going to do? And I was thinking that Notre-Dame ranked in the top 5 is truly the most laughable thing in the AP top 25. I mean, that's ridiculous. Right. And I agree with you. There's no doubt about that. I think there are around 15 to 18. Yeah. That's fair. So, but you know, I'm a die hard. Me and my dad watch here every weekend watching this. And this is just going to be brutal. In my opinion. Yeah, no. That's the problem. Because. We all respect Marcus Freeman, he's a great recruiter, but nobody has any idea what he's going to be like as a head coach. We had a snapshot in the bowl game, and it wasn't pretty. Exactly. You know, when Notre-Dame took off and that bowl game against Oklahoma state and got up, I mean, you know, up ready to play, but then blew it. You know, that typical Notre-Dame, you're looking at a bowl game. They never should have been there. And I'm a die hard Irish man. But let's be realistic I was people. This is just pretty God awful to see. And you know, a lot of people are going to be mad at me for saying this, but I really don't care. Because, you know, when you support your team, you know what you have. You know what your team is. You know what your coach is doing. Now, Marcus Freeman, this is different. I get that. And it's going to be 2022 or sorry, 2023, 2024. But yeah, when Ohio State does and I hate to say it, obliterate them. What is going to happen to this Notre-Dame team? That my question for you, Paul. Well, I think you have to bake it into the cake and know that that's probably going to happen. And then look at the rest of the schedule and find a game to turn because and there's some really tough games on those schedule. Clemson's on that schedule. We think they're going to be really good. We don't really know. There are some other treacherous moments. So that's what it comes down to. But I still like what Freeman has done. We have a chance to hang out with him when we did the NFL Draft shows from Las Vegas and there's everything to like about him. But nobody in their right mind should start their career. In Columbus on a Saturday night, first week of the year. Cadet is up next. Big power looking good. Sounding good is always. I wanted to tell you the piece you'll have on coaching them of the gamecocks. This past week was beautiful. I mean, I really enjoyed it. I wanted to put on some shoulder past and a helmet and get out there and play some football. You know, I bet you would have been good. I would have tried. I would have tried. A big blowing material. Listen, don't just call up here from some other name. Sure, let me tell you something. Your Notre-Dame iris is gonna be Clemson so bad. They gonna be nothing. And I'm gonna tell you something. I got to go into a scrimmage that the game comes had recently and I can't tell you how I did it, but I was able to maneuver my way with my boss junior into this swimming and big pole. I'm going to tell you, sir. The game talks is going to have something for people to be worried about. How they're going to be what something they have that will make everyone worried. Sir, we have got a lot of places in peace, now we're going to still need more work. But Shane Bieber has got the gamecocks in the right direction. And I think a lot of gamecock fans realize that. Okay, so let's go through the fan, the fan conversation here. What do they have and what's their record going to be? Don't give me any, don't get me ifs and butts and all that. Just tell me, just spit it out. Not 7, 8. Just give me a number and we'll call it a day. I think we will about 8 games. Oh, so if you're going to win 8 games, that's going to what scare people? Is that what you just got through saying? Well, now. Winning 8 games is not going to be any different than the last year. Well, you got me there. Not to put the words back in your mouth. Palmetto moonshine man, but you just got through telling me if I heard you correctly. Shane Bieber, South Carolina, they're going to scare people. We're all going to be heading under our beds and into our closets and you got to then they're going to have the same record as last year. Well, the tailgate is pretty good. Okay. I knew I would get an honest answer from an honest man. AC is up next. Good afternoon, mister Flynn.

"Little glimpse at the my future, too. 5 days later at four o'clock in the morning, Chelsea's water breaks and their son Brandon is born about four and a half hours later. It was incredible. It's just seeing Brandon born and all never thinking that she was going to be able to do it again. Let alone Carrie and then deliver with no problems. That was special for us. And that's a pretty good end to any movie buster, but that is not the end because there's another baby out of the way. On Valentine's Day, maximus is born to the surrogate. I got to be in the room behind a curtain and right when maximus was born, I got to walk over and see him for the first time and it was just like surreal that he was here. The love that I felt the connection I felt was immediate with him. I just knew that he was mine immediately. Freddy, who grew up with the Freeman 5 with his two older brothers with rosemary with Fred, he now has his own Freeman 5, with Charlie, and with Brandon, and now with maximus and he's sitting on a couch and talking with his father after he is the three boys all at home and he says to his dad, you know, this is really come full circle for me. Buster, when you look back on all of this, what does this whole story say to you? It really speaks to me to the amount of love that Freddie has within that family. Just to see this wonderful family so connected and holding together through all these really very difficult moments from rosemary's cancer and her death and Fred's health scare to all the way in the last year, everything that Chelsea had to go through to grow this family in the way that they really wanted to. "So buster Freddie Freeman loses his mother tragically at age ten, two years after that, he almost loses his dad at age 12, how does this impact and shape his development as a baseball player? So after mister Freeman's health scare at that point, he commits to his three boys. You know what I'm going to do a better job of taking care of myself. And he does that. And he helps to foster Freddy's development as a baseball player. You know, about 6 months after his mom passed away, he had stopped playing and then baseball really became an outlet for him through his teenage years. And he's big, and he's strong and right away. Folks in the area notice, this is someone who potentially has a chance as a baseball player. And by the time he gets to his senior year in high school, he's a potential first or second round draft pick. So buster at this point, the plan is for ready to go to college unless he is a first or second rounder in the major league draft. But as the draft gets closer, how did things change in Freddy's mind? At two o'clock in the morning, he knocks on his dad's doors, and he basically said, look, I want to play baseball. We had that in our mind that if you're not first round pick, let's just go to school and get your degree. As we were getting closer to the draft, you know, it just kind of dawned on me that I just wanted to play baseball. For Fred Freeman, that was an incredibly important thing to get his degree. But he sees Freddie's passion to play professional baseball and he relents. And so after the braves draft him in the second round, he asked he signs the paper because at that point, Freddie was 17. And the new deal between Fred and Freddie was that he was gonna get four years to get to the big leagues and if it didn't happen, then you know what? He was gonna go to college. I think it worked out for him. So Freddie gets to the minor leagues. He gets drafted. He ends up being a prospect of note. And after a few years, he gets called up to the big leagues in September of 2010, and in a lot of ways buster, those first few games, they seem forgettable. But there is this one at bat in Philadelphia on September 21st. What happened? Yeah, against future Hall of Famer Roy halliday. And as his dad told us he was watching on television and he saw Freddie inserted into the game as a pinch hitter and he was like, yeah, holiday is going to strike about on three pitches. We head now to the top of the 7th inning braves have some more work to do. Freddie Freeman will come on and pitch it. I got up there, you know, I'm just a 21 year old kid that had 13 at bats. As Freeman jumps on the first pitch and he launches a tape measure shot deep to right and gone. His first career Homer against Roy Hamilton. It was one of those swings where you hit the ball and you don't really feel the ball hit your back, and I was like, oh my gosh. That ball's going out. And you love the old video of it because you can see Freddy as a young player. He's a very respectful understated person and as he's rounding the bases, having hit this home run off this incredible pitcher, he was just suppressing a grin. And it's not till he gets back to the dugout and some of his teammates are giving him a hard time good naturedly that he finally can smile. So aside from that Homer against Roy halliday, buster, 2010 for Freddie Freeman was kind of unremarkable, but the next year, 2011, when he's officially a rookie that's his official rookie season, that would be super important for him both on and off the field. That's because he meets his future wife Chelsea. The first time I met Chelsea, it's 2011. Spring training. It was just so comfortable with her, you know, I didn't have to be someone different. And the first thing that he notices is she doesn't really know that much about baseball. When I first met him, I didn't know anything about baseball at all. He would quiz me after each game, so to help me learn baseball. She had flown up to Atlanta and I went over for, I think with two strikeouts and.

"This past spring and exclusive emotional portrait of one of the game's best players. Someone who opens up as never before about loss and loved ones and how hard it could be to build a family of your own. I'm Pablo Toure. It's Friday, October 29th. This is ESPN daily. Buster, thanks for joining me man. I appreciate it. Sure, great to talk with you. So we're talking to you today about this documentary you reported for E 60. It is called full circle. The Freddy Freeman story. And as that title might imply, you'd chart his journey, two Major League Baseball, but the journey, the story is as much about family as anything buster about his journey to starting his own, and why that is so deeply important to him. And so I just wanted to start here at the beginning of that circle. To talk about who Freddy Freeman was before he became the all star the MVP. We now know him as today. He was a happy kid growing up in Orange County, California. With two older brothers with his mom rosemary and his dad Fred, you know, fell in love with baseball in an early age. My first real memory is tee ball. I was 5 years old. I'm left handed. I went up there and stood left handed and I guess my coach tried to turn me around right handed and my mom came storming up and goes, he's left handed. He's gonna stay left handed. And he was a kid, as he said, his mom loved him very hard. I think I'm a spitting image of her. Just such a caring loyal person. Her love just poured out and it poured into me. This is someone who he was incredibly close to. And looked at her as being, you know, his backbone. And someone they could count on for support. But she had gotten melanoma when he was 5 years old. He didn't really have an awareness of it. And then in the fall of 1999, she had a recurrence and within 6 months, she was in hospice. And Freddie, as he said to me, all along, he just assumed that his mom was going to make it through. So Freddie is ten years old, buster, when his mom gets diagnosed with this recurrence of melanoma and the stability that he's known is suddenly threatened. What happened next? Well, he and his older brothers, every day after school, they would immediately leave and rather than go and play the sports, which they all played. It was a baseball family. They would go to the hospital and then.

"Hey, everyone, Pablo here. We're doing something a little different for today's episode because tonight the Atlanta Braves are gonna try and retake their lead in the World Series against the Houston Astros. And one of my favorite episodes of this podcast is a show we did back in April, about first baseman Freddie Freeman, the MVP of the braves. And the story is about so much more than baseball. I think it's gonna stick with you as it is stuck with me and change the way you see this guy and the way you watch this World Series going forward. Buster you've been working on this story about braves first baseman Freddie Freeman for a long time now. What drew you to his story? Well, of course, you know, he's one of the best players in baseball. MVP of the national league in 2020, he was probably the most prominent athlete to have a series case of coronavirus with his temperature spiking in July to a 104.5. But as we did this, oh my goodness, it really, in my 20 years at ESPN, it's one of the most rewarding stories that I've done, one of the most inspiring stories that I've done because they're just so many layers and to see the relationships within Freddy's family and how his life is really come full circle from the.

"Posted all over the town and danny said afterwards that the sheriff deputies were following him and stocking the family the incident was investigated and it was decided in favor of the deputy. That's not a big surprise. no it isn't local. People had their own theories about what happened that day and the freeman family is understandably upset and angry and that created the ongoing hostility between danny freeman. The sheriff's danny certainly believed that his son was killed in an act of cold-blooded murder and according to the family shot in the back. Which would make the author story of what happened untrue. Still the shooting list ruled justifiable based on the testimony of the shooter. And that's the deputy named david hayes. Well i guess according to the sheriff's office this deputy passed a lie detector test when he was giving his version of events. So that makes it. True now doesn't oh. We know that lie detector tests really don't determine who's lying. It just measures the stress response right now back in the summer of ninety eight. Ashley's father. Danny who was already known to have a really violent temper. Had been charged with abusing. Shame and shane wasn't the only one who was a victim of danny's temper beck in nineteen eighty five. Danny was charged with beating his father-in-law after the father-in-law trimmed danny's front yard bushes without asking for permission. So the father in law had a restraining order against danny for his own protection. The local rumor was the danny was involved in drugs and he was verbally and even physically abusive of his wife and children. But he and kathy would definitely deny this and there was no evidence his wife. Cathy was described as a very loving caring person and she was also a dependable worker. She was the main supporter of the family. At this point. She always showed up for work and she was one who was never in trouble with the law at all. So initially sixteenth birthday. Her mom cathy freeman was thirty. Seven it was a wednesday and kathy had a lot to do for her daughter's special day. She prepared a late breakfast of biscuits and gravy. This week we covered the battle of freemen's farm sometimes called the first battle of Saratoga. The British under General Burgoyne are becoming desperate as they are cut off from Canada and unable to reach New York City. The battle was the British army's attempt to break through the American lines and finally reach New York. I briefly mentioned in the main show that we call it the battle of Freeman's farm because the battles fault on a field owned by Tori named Freeman. The farmer in question was a man named John Freeman who had rented the land that he was farming from General Philip Schuyler. Freeman along with his wife and ten children had in fact, fled to Canada earlier in the war. It turns out though that Freeman enlisted in the king's loyal Americans and was with this loyalist regiment as it marched back to his old home. By some family histories he served as a local guide to the British during the time surrounding this battle. Is. Twelve. Year old son Thomas Freeman was also with him during the campaign. Freeman managed to survive the battle and the campaign. At least one source I read said that when Burgoyne surrendered his army, the loyalists that were with him were permitted to return to Canada. I'm not sure if the Americans allowed the return or if the loyalists simply melted away and made their way back to Canada on their own. This is actually a question. I'm still trying to answer. However we do know that by early November John Freeman and his son were back in Saint John's Quebec and were reunited with their family. I wish. I. Could say they lived happily ever after but a short time later a smallpox. Killed Jon Freeman his wife and seven of his ten children..

"Rather than into a philosophy and substance. Well I. think that's really beautifully. Put in with that philosophy in that approach I think certainly the cars and the future of the marker are in good hands. Freeman one last thing before you go. I like to ask all of our guests. If a genie popped out of a bottle and said you can have three cars what they be. Oh my gosh. That is such a difficult question because I. Look at it always reshuffling the deck in your always having to sell something to buy something, these are free, and you not only get a genie. You get three extra parking space. Yeah, yeah I mean I love the early nine love love love love the early nine eleven and I think that one of the experiences I would love to have would probably be a sixty seven nine eleven s soft window. Targa or I love those two cars I. Think they'd be perfect. The second car if I had a more modern car I love, the new roof or the new singer I think I would have something like that and built to my design specs. I would be very particular about how to do details inspecting and everything else on those cars. And then the other car is something much more elemental and I already have one. It's a caterer ham super seven. Early one so it's really pure aluminum body. Bare aluminum and with a British racing green knows and flying fenders I love driving that car. That is an amazing Dr, isn't it? I've had a chance to drive a few of them in their absolutely revelatory. Yeah I think everybody should at one time own a Super Salvin, because from that point you reference everything else, and it's you really don't want to drive a car like that on the freeways you drive it in the canyons. Drive down the coast. It is about minimalism, and it's about the smallest cabin that you possibly have literally and I just love that the togetherness that you feel in that car. So. I think that would make a nice combination of the Coles. I'm always designing something. And I tell you it's kind of like a popcorn machine every single day every single hour. I'll start on idea and kind of bring it up to fruition, and by the time I bring it up to fruition on board, and I'm GonNa go to the next one. You know, so it's the way it is. That's the mark of a true designer, and obviously you are. You're one of the few. Thank you so much, thank you. That is a great trip sector. Early kind of speaks to a sense of purity that I.

"Experience because that's really what makes driving couple lives. Well! That's one of the things that I talked to looseness stony about all through the last fifteen years that the experience of keeping the car and analog experience, because the rest of the world is going to a digital experience, and there's a backlash coming off of that in one of the backlashes is that Porsche went all PDK until there was a backlash with their enthusiast and they finally decided well. We're going to do one thing. It's gotta be called. Nine eleven are working to build a limited production, GONNA manual boxes, and they sold out immediately. That's right, and so all of a sudden now they are smart enough to listen to the enthusiast. Enthusiast one side and say okay. We're GONNA. Come out with manual version. There's GonNa be a manual version of the nine to and come up with their GT floors, except for maybe a car like a GT to are asked, which is all about the numbers, and it's all about the track right? Yeah, it's different. Being analog is something that still has value today. It absolutely does with right Freeman I wanNA talk about poor shirt, because that's where the passionate probably the brightest I know that when we met way back when you were just about ready to launch into your, our group talked to us about what the art group is all about. Okay, well the are group really started in nineteen ninety nine, but it was really if you think about the beginning of the ninety s, the movement on early nine eleven's especially if you look at Northern California and Southern California. "Continuing our conversation with Freeman. Thomas, design, career included stints with Porsche Volkswagen Audi Daimler Chrysler Freeman let's get right back into it. Chrysler must have been a fascinating place to explore sort of the conductor role, as it were putting together teams and getting people inspired and excited about your vision. You went from there to Ford. Is that right? Yes, so, what happened was I got a call from Jamie's one day and he says Hennard fisker. Just quit. You don't get. It was running the studio in Irvine at that time, and so he said I would really like you to take over his role, which was advanced design, and so that was a no brainer for me, because I knew a lot of the team there and so I joined Ford and at that point it was North American advanced design which a grew later in yours to global advanced design where we had the small studio in London in Soho called. Called Genie! We have a studio in Shanghai. In also in Dearborn in the cellar of Dearborn I retired in twenty seventeen at the end of two, thousand, seventeen. I was eligible for retirement. I'm only sixty two now so for me. It was a opportunity really to go to the next level of we really would. I WanNa do and work much more entrepreneurially, but I love Ford loved the people there because they were a little bit more fluid. They sought a little bit more out of the box. Chrysler I think. Maybe it's different now under Fiat organization, but before it was much more structured. Not that Ford isn't structured. There's so many amazing things that came out of Ford that you have to ask yourself how and why in Aura and lot of it is that it does allow a lobby entrepreneurs to go on in the people are amazing, dealing with leadership in coming up with new concepts in getting feedback and things like that are amazing, and so I'm still have a great relationship with all of them a at sort that's an incredible career trajectory, obviously a love to talk about what your future plans are your present and future plans. Yet well I consult now and one of my clients is roof automobile and so I, did two cars for them actually three back in between Chrysler and Ford small break I did the three for them, and then I did the new CPR for? In Estonia and then the SDR which now are getting production, NYPD those are amazing cars at the complete far into the supercar spectrum in an amazing company that is certainly well known to Porsche enthusiasts. But roof remains kind of best kept secret in the bigger arena in. Quite a couple of important designs, and they're actually seeing some certainly the original yellow bird, even the contemporary design. You're seeing big up in some of the recent auctions zip become very hard. Absolutely in really. The CPR has been something that I've talked to alouine Estonia about since the early two thousands, and I think they had to get a lot of other things out of their heads I and finally the day came Mike would sit down with them and I. would sketch out a platform strategy for them. You know using either aluminum, extrusion or carbon tub and show how you could do a family vehicles, basically by using the same tub, and so the time came where alloys. Alloys was ready, so I went over there, and started taking body panels, and chopping them up and mocking up a concept, and then eventually we got the clay model up running and beheaded great colleague to work with on that from the past is is names, air overs, and there is a clay model or math, Mahler, and also grayer creative in his own right, so it was very great to collaborate with Eric, and so we came up with the idea of widening the door by thirty millimeters aside, and you know this a scary stuff because you're looking at. It's almost like hot rod territory, taking two four and and changing one millimeter of a line. Everybody notices with. And so we had two things we want to preserve with the car was that it didn't exceed the overall length of the original CPR and that it was also identifiable as the pure evolution of that car. Who so again? It's kind of putting my hat back onto concept one days of really kind of looking at a an icon in its own right, so we did the thirty millimeters aside a magically the original roof which we flushed out the. The glass and it's the same roof, and it's the stained glass, except for the recorders which are intakes and all of side, and made the car look as though that it went to the gym and you look at original nine eleven. The doors looked anemic. Literally now you put a little shoulder on them, and they get a little more substantive well. Yeah, and because we're looking at a vehicle that's about the width of a nine five nine. But yeah, we did want to look like that kind of wit, so by developing the fender flares and developing the front rear language, which we wanted it to be pure evolution. Awesome, the original CPR so what we found was little nuances like for instance, put the original Bonnet on it, and now all of a sudden, we had room to develop defender form, so it wasn't pinched against the shot line of the hood. And so now we can make a little bit more voluptuous and bring it out and blended into the doors, and now in the back where the inner coolers were. We had the room for the inner coolers. Ads where normally we would have had to figure out how to pack that those things in, but now you had the extra internet hats on either side right like a nine, nine, three, nine, five nine, where they brought the whole back end out. That's right, and they came back into the that original door section, in I'm amazed that we never did it on nine five nine, because helmet boss did not want to change that door, but I think had he opened it up. It would have been a better car and so for myself if I think about all the years that I've been around nine eleven's coming from childhood with Jeff swore all the way fast forward to working at Porsche our group. Being around the faithful around this thing, but having my own mindset.

"Amy Freeman says facilities have to have an emergency plan that includes an updated contact list as soon as this broke Patricia hunter reached out to this facility and said alright request a list of all residents and all resident representative it took us one week to get that information sorry two weeks hunter offered to set up a conversation with life care and told the families they should organize and have a point person to contact Ryan Harris como nuisance como's it could now come was Carlene Johnson eight district congressman Kim Schrier urging Washingtonians to stay home if possible can try who's a pediatrician says there have been very few cases thankfully of kids getting seriously sick from corona virus that's a blessing on the other hand there's the downside of that which is that it is impossible the kids are not getting infected with S. try urges parents to try and limit how much their kids are out and about during the six week school closure as they may actually contracted but show no symptoms kids likely have it aren't showing symptoms ours you know transmitting it to one another and then bringing it home to families and if they bring it home to grandparents that's a recipe for disaster so it is really hard to close schools but that's the reason it is to protect all of our public health she says people need to be checking on elderly neighbors and we as a nation need to re think where we get our medical supplies as depending on a foreign country China for all of it has put us in a perilous situation that's come was Carlene Johnson reporting bringing us six thirty four your call more traffic updates every ten minutes on the floor is what's going on Tama well we're still watching this issue intent is no return box truck on the north on highway one sixty seven exit to eighty fourth Avenue south it's there at the end of the exit there is a tow truck on the scene and how they help the box truck back on its wheels now the extension northbound eighty fourth Avenue when you get to the end of that exit still closed but the exit to south and Central Avenue remained open it's a common sense of your site once been reported on highway sixteen across the Tacoma narrows bridge and we have separate construction going on information right now one lane is alternating traffic in both directions of highway two oh three just south of northeast still what road there is some slowing in each direction the traffic report is sponsored by Denny's Denny's six ninety nine super slam is back at two eggs two bacon strips two sausage links hash Browns and two pancakes for six ninety nine for a limited time price may vary that from Danny our next call much traffic at six forty four and here's our como eco roof forecast with Shannon o'donnell full starry skies as we head into the after dark hours and after that beautiful day it you're gonna be pretty night but a cold one since we don't.

"Right to another episode of piecing it together the podcast where we take a look at a new movie and try to figure out what movies inspired spire it and today on the show we are talking about a major superhero movie. Although it's one that's not doing very well and that's kind of a shame. We're talking about birds of prey and the fantabulous emancipation of one Harley. Quinn which is of course the Harley Quinn Spin Spin off solo movie which is actually kind of a team up movie with this Group of female superheroes called the birds of prey are actually. Are They village you know. I still don't even know I mean the the the conceit of suicide squad. which was the first movie with Harley? Quinn in it was that these are all villain. So uh-huh is are the birds of prey villains. I honestly I watched the movie just two days ago and I don't know I don't think they are. I think they're heroes. I think it's just Harley you know it clearly I am a little bit lost but what I do know is that you should have gone and seen this movie. I don't like that it's flopping hard as it is i. I didn't love the movie. I thought it was pretty good But it should not be flopping like this and it's a shame because it's just gonNA give more fodder to these awful nerds online who loved spout hate constantly so so go see this damn movie or a and then come back and listen to this conversation. I've got coming up here with Chad. Clinton Freeman who I originally was thinking that I would in May get a female co host for this episode but Chad is such a big DC. superfan that I gotTa have him on every DC related movie that comes out so so you know there's GonNa be lots of great coverage by female film critics that you should go check out about this movie and get their opinions on it but here you're going to get the here Chad a DC superfan Talk about the movie and talk about some great puzzle pieces. He's got a big list puzzle pieces man for like three times as many as I came. Aim To this episode with. But anyway we're going to get into that in a second. I do WANNA remind you.
