Renée Zellweger, Judy Garland, controlled and created (and fed drugs) by Hollywood's studio system
"AIR the new biopic Judy stars Renee Zellweger as the singer and Hollywood star Judy Garland during the final months of her life Judy Garland was forty seven when she died in London in nineteen sixty nine I film critic Justin Chang has this review Academy Awards voters can rarely resist a celebrity impersonation judging by some of the star turns that have won Oscars in recent years these are just performances their jaw dropping feats of mimicry Gary Oldman is Winston Churchill rami Malek is Freddie Mercury the new film Judy is being sold along similar lines Renee Zellweger is Judy Garland to judge by the breathless hype that has greeted the movie so far the approach seems to be paying off what makes Judy unusually fascinating for an otherwise standard celebrity biopic is that so worker isn't Judy Garland her transformation is impressive but hardly definitive even with the help of a dark wig and skillful makeup and prosthetics she doesn't exactly disappear into the role of the beloved singer and actress who captivated the public in movies like the wizard of oz and meet me in St Louis but even if you don't always believe you're in the presence of garland Zellweger nearly makes up in raw emotional commitment what she lacks in verisimilitude her intensely felt go for broke performance sometimes runs the risk of overwhelming this sturdy screen adaptation of Peter quilters stage play end of the rainbow. Judy begins with one of several flashbacks to the teenage garland on the set of the wizard of oz showing us how the industry created and destroyed her in the same breath her body an image or ruthlessly controlled by the powerful MGM studio head Louis B. Mayer who puts on a strict diet and gives her barbiturates amphetamines setting in motion the substance abuse problem that she will struggle with for the rest of her life but most of the movie is set in nineteen sixty nine long after her Hollywood heyday and mere months before her death at the age of forty seven Judy is now broke and virtually homeless dragging herself from one crummy Ellie club performance to another we meet her eldest child Liza Minnelli at a house party and also Judy's third husband Sydney loft who takes custody of their two young children well she reluctantly books a gig at the talk of the town night club in London although she's devastated at being separated from her kids Judy has little choice but to work overseas were her fans can still be counted on to turn out in full force. in London Judy's depression and insomnia quickly take over she pops pills skips rehearsals and nearly misses opening night but when she stumbles into the spotlight and starts crooning by myself and the trolley song her confidence come surging back and she enjoys having an appreciative crowd again. one night after a show Judy feeling lonely the friends an adoring couples Stan and Dan and joins them for a late dinner at their apartment in a touching scene damn played by Andy Nyman reminds Judy how much she means to her many gay fans sweet this you can't seem. sometimes I spy to get out there.

"Queens. Biggest hits were in the seventies and early eighties among them bohemian rhapsody. We will rock you. We are the champions and another one bites the dust, but those records have endured beyond their time on the charts. We will rock you, and we are the champions became popular chance at stadium sports events. Freddie. Mercury was a very theatrical performer with the big personality. He died of complications related to aids in nineteen Ninety-one Rami Malik performances. Freddie, Mercury is a big contrast to his starring role in the TV series mister robot as a withdrawn hacker with social anxiety disorder. Jerry spoke with Romney Malik in November. Let's start with seen from bohemian rhapsody. It's nineteen seventy-five and Freddie Mercury and the members of Queen or in the office of a record executive played by Mike Myers. Talking about the record. They're about to release, Freddie. Mercury speaks. I call the album. A night at the opera. Are you aware that no one actually likes opera? Do you? I do. Misunderstand darling. It's a rock and roll record the scale of opera the pace of of great tragedy. The wit of Shakespeare, the unbridled joy of musical theatre musical experience rather than just another record something for everyone. Something. Something that will make people feel belongs to them mixon. Res- will cross boundaries will will was speaking bloody tongues. If we want to. Rami Malik welcome to fresh air. It's so much fun to watch you as Freddie Mercury was singing part of your addition. It ended up being part of that audition. I warn them. I was not a singer. I told them and don't play the piano. I do dance floor could be considered something having to do with rhythm. But probably not all the music credits in the movie are attributed to Queen. So you sang as you were filming that the music that we're hearing is actually, Freddie Mercury and Queen. It's actually in the mouth commission, the large majority of it is Freddie Mercury and in order to sink it up properly use bits of my voice in the beginning. It will lead in with my voice, and then pick up the majority using, Freddie, mercury's voice tops entails as you. Call it. It's very difficult to get my voice up to those high notes at some point my voice breaks, and it breaks pretty quickly when I'm trying to ascend. What Freddie Mercury can do? There's actually a scene where you're at the piano singing a sketch of Bahia mean rhapsody, and your voice breaks is any of that you. There are parts that are me. I think the the parts that break. Yes. That would be considered Rami rahmael. Should we just hear that fit? Sure. Okay. Let us know if you can tell.
Oscar nominations 2019 predictions: From A Star is Born to Roma
"Eight. I saw green book most recently, which I thought was great that may end up being my pick to to win the best picture. You've seen all best picture movies except for Roma. So you've got Black Panther black klansman bohemian rhapsody, by the way, Adam Lambert and Queen are going to perform Sunday, that'd be cool. That'll be really lady Gaga, Bradley Cooper performing. Which will also be cool. You really cool the favorite green book Romo rumour, aroma. Tony Romo model a star is born and vice. And who you picking unpicking green book to win because I think it made you feel the best and it was well done a period piece based on a true story, Rome. I think is getting a lot of a lot of buzz too. But maybe the director Affonso who also I think one best picture for gravity in our best director in two thousand thirteen for gravity Black Panther, which I know dragon scene for sure is definitely the best of all the marvel movies ever made. And it's interesting because it was such a big deal about their cast being all black the director and writer Ryan Kugler African American and so I'm surprised that he wasn't nominated for best director as well, Spike, Lee. This is his fifth nomination for best director. He's never one. But I'm picking green book to win that wouldn't be surprised if Roma does I loved bohemian rhapsody. But you remember when it came out, and we talked about they took some liberties with the story joke that Freddie Mercury doesn't die of aids in the movie because I remember making that joke. They changed a bunch of stuff around in that movie. Why did you read the bio and Freddie Mercury? I talked to friends that have seen it the no a lot more about Queen and the timetable with how the movie plays out and how he got in the band and stuff, but it's an entertaining movie. What's the best movie you've seen this year because I'm picking green book to win? I haven't seen any of them, by the way. So I got nothing. Oh. Yeah. Set a best picture you haven't seen Black Panther either. No. But are you a superhero movie guy? No, not at all. No. I I haven't seen any of those. I'm gonna say that I I like bohemian rhapsody a lot and I'm not a huge Queen fan. But I really liked it. But I'm gonna go with the stars four stars born it was it was really really I think the biggest reason reasonable win. Cathy, is that it's already been this is the fourth. They've done this story. I know that they've tweaked it. I didn't lady Gaga is gonna pull the upset for best actress, I hope so I you know, it really really made me like lady Gaga put her in a total different category fro. Yes. She's fantastic. A great singer. But you know, I I like her music, but I never put her like on this pedestal you've tried to act not try you weren't actor try. That's a bit of a stretch. But yeah, but the point is imagine the first real you ever play you get nominated for an Oscar, and I get that she's playing a struggling musician, and she can easily identify with that and go back to what it took to get discovered and all of that. And and you know, toiling in nothing jobs hoping for that break, but to execute that onscreen, and she was she was the best part of the movie by far Bradley Cooper is really good. But I hope she wins. Even though Glenn Close, it's seven nation. She's never one. So she could be a lifetime achievement kind of winner. If you will she's phenomenally talented, she s I don't know. But I liked Ramey. Malik as I think he's going to go. I mean, he did a great impersonation. So let's go actor in a leading role, you got Christian bale? Vice Bradley Cooper, a star is born Willem Defoe at eternity gate. Remmy Romney Malik bohemian rhapsody Vigo Mortenson green book, jussie smollet for the Chicago hope. Very funny. Avi next next year. He'll get one for that bright. Yeah. Like when Golden Globes. Yeah. So that it plus you're combining acting and singing did he really singing. Oh, okay. So we he was acting like a cigarette. Huber really saying. Yeah, he did having Adam Lambert seeing at the goal K, so okay. And at the Oscars, maybe Bradley Cooper, then because he's singing and acting and this is any directed it. This is Bradley Cooper's forced nomination as an actor, and he's never won Christian bale. One once Willem Dafoe. This is his fifth nomination. He's never won. And I don't I know Vigo Mortenson hasn't won. And certainly Rami Malik first nomination. Still picking me Malik to win. I thought he was great. Actress in a leading role you have low LIZA appereciation from Roma. You have Glenn Close. Everybody knows here from the wife Livia Coleman from the favorite lady. Gaga stars born Melissa McCarthy, can you ever forgive him in a more serious turn not a not a comedic role. She's awesome. The best lady Gaga for that. I think it's upset Glenn Close as the heavy favorite. But I'm I'm pulling a lady Gaga upset as my pick feel like Glenn Close because she's been around. So long performance is great. And then maybe it's like her turn kind of thing. Maybe and, but they did it lady Gaga's gonna keep acting and have another shot seems far-fetched at this point. Right. So is leader thirty. So, but how come Bradley Cooper, gene, get a directing because he did for American sniper? So that's about those are the biggies right there. Yeah. Supporting actor and actress, Marcia Lee who is in green book, I bet you. He wins a second. You don't want to talk about making hairstyling best animated feature. Incredible to come on. I don't know about best editing. The spider verse hairstyling best song song about best picture. Or did. We did that already songs. Best. The song. Okay. What are your choices? I don't see all the stars Black Panther. I'll fight RV g the place where lost things go. Mary. Poppins returns. Shallow. A star is born when a cowboy change Spurs for wings, the ballot BUSTER Scruggs, and that's different from original score original scores of music throughout the movie right songs. I think it'll be almost impossible. For lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper not to win. I think they win. Okay. We're we're out of time. I'll watch part of it. Yeah. It's like a four hour show. Four hours. It's hard to it gets here. It's one of my favorite my favorite nights of the year. I used to always do with my mom. That guy picks. I'm that guy. I have a couple of friends getting together to watch the show. I get it. I mean, if you watch I haven't seen all the movies. I wait to watch him on the Denver Broncos play. Year later used be all the movies. It'll be of several of these. Oh, I gave did your wife end up watching bohemian a couple times guide and really liked.

"But can we I I feel like whenever he talks? I'm wondering did he have veneers put in and he's never gotten used to them. Have you noticed this? You're listening to his speech sif, you pick it up and Queen and Freddie Mercury. I get some power from him that is about stepping up and living your best life being exactly who you want to be an accomplishing everything you so desire, and I feel that. And he allows us all to feel that. So this is again for him. Thank you very much. What he said was so beautiful. I was so distracted. House like a very distinct way of talking for sure. Yeah. You see bohemian rhapsody? I know I wonder if you know because he wore a prosthetic for that. Oh, did he. Oh, yeah. So you because you will be how you saw the movie right now. I haven't seen it yet. What are you doing? I mean. So many other things. Yes. See that's the problem is I cannot get but that's not saying much this year. Anyway, what I'm saying is it's a movie worth seeing? But because his performance is like, whatever you think of the movie, I have serious questions about the film. And it seems like it's kind of a PR job for the ban. Anyway, regardless his his role in that film was remarkable. And it's because he embodied, Freddie, Mercury. So well, but one of the things you don't realize about Freddie, Mercury is that he had this incredible over bite. I don't even know if that's what you'd call it because it's just like the severe like pushed out like almost like an over. Jessica. And. And you're just like transfixed with his prostheses prosthesis. So it will distract you in the film such that I wonder if perhaps he's been permanently damage prosthetic because he and he does it. And apparently that is exactly how Freddie Mercury was that. He was just so anyway, regardless I don't know if that has anything to do with it or not. But you're not the first to point out the way he speaks. It was so interesting one more quick I just have to really quickly. Make a note of this lady Gaga was positioned literally at the foot of the steps going up to the stage to receive awards, which meant lady Gaga was inserting herself in everything. It was so bizarre. And I was like girl. No, no such spots with somebody, please. Speaking of caddy, I really need to take Michael Jordan to task. I did he have like an accident or something. Well, he looked like he was wearing a brace or so. That's a fashion harness. I thought perhaps somebody was trying to keep tabs on him. Because it looks like one of those fashion harnesses. Well, looks like the one that Timothy shell may war. But it makes me think of like harnesses, you put your kids in on a leash thing. Yes. It can. And then it's disguised as like a cute little fuzzy backpack with an animal on the back. You're like, no that's a leash for your child. But whatever the backpack is for them to not know for you. Well, no, I'm saying that you feel better like you're being judged by all the parents walking by for me. It was for the kid. You put your backpack on I can keep track of you. But it's really just w anyway, he looks like he's wearing an adult harness. And I want to put this harness thing to bed. It is like Timothy shallow may. Okay, fine. He did it. It was a one off fashion, whatever. But Michael, you're so much better than the fashion harness. And frankly, I just I think at Detroit. From his overall beauty. Okay. I am. I really did think I was gonna say we can't talk about this. Because I thought he'd had lake some sort of horrific accident had back surgery. Well, it's heinous. Is that Louis Vitton? I can't. Yes. It's vitton. They made Timothy Shalam as fashion harnesses..

"That's get back to my interview with Romney Malik who plays Freddie, Mercury in the new Queen bio pic bohemian rhapsody now also stars in the TV series mister robot. Freddie, Mercury was born in Zanzibar and grew up there. And in India before his family immigrated to England Rummy Malik is American the son of gyp shin immigrants when we left off. He was talking about trying to understand and convey who Freddie Mercury was I had to mystify him somehow and the way to do that was looking at his background. I thought to myself. Here's a young man immigrated to a country defied all obstacles to do what he loved, and that was one thing that that I could understand not to compare myself to him in any way, shape or form. But I am a first generation American my family came from Egypt and saw a better life for their children in the US. And you know, obviously, like so many people they would have loved for us to be doctors and lawyers. My sister is a doctor. So she fulfilled that aspect, but it was very difficult to convince anyone that I wanted to do this. And that I could do this. Did you feel like you were going to be letting them down if you failed that that they came here in annot already born when they came here, but still they probably knew they'd be having children are more children and often with immigrants the idea is it's for the children. So if you failed as an actor would you have been letting let? Them down. Did you did you feel guilty for even trying for an acting career? It's good question. Yeah. I did feel guilty and the only way to compensate for that was just to to give it my all. There was one moment. I was in my apartment that we were living in four of us in a two bedroom apartment, and I was I would wake up early. I was sleeping in in the living room at that point. And I had a stack of Manila envelopes and every morning would get up and put my head shot and resume in the Manila envelopes. And remember, my father one day standing next to my mom, saying we have very Tanegashima, son. And I don't think that he knows that I heard him. But I heard that and it gave me that extra boost I needed to just keep going, and I. I would take those Manila envelopes at his delivering pizza would put them glue them or tape them to every pizza box. I would send out I would keep them behind the register of the fast food restaurant. I would be working at and if anyone even produce Oriel came in they were getting a head shot and resume in there to go back. Did you did you deliver pizzas to like famous producers directors? I did get an audition out of it once and I did. Yeah. I did was for commercial and of still kept in touch with them person gaming the audition. Did you get the commercial? I did not. What was it? For an EMS. Well, I will tell you one day. I did get a call. I got a call from Maura Casey who was a casting director for the Gilmore girls. And she asked to speak with the Romney Malik agent. And I said speaking, and she said, well, can I talk to about Romney Malik coming in and for a role on the Gilmore girls? And I said, yeah. And she's in who am I speaking with? "Let's get back to my interview with Rummy Malik who plays, Freddie. Mercury in the new Queen bio pic bohemian rhapsody Malik also stars in the TV series mister robot. Freddie, Mercury was born in Zanzibar and grew up there. And in India before his family immigrated to England Rami Malik is American the son of shin immigrants when we left off. Off. He was talking about trying to understand and convey who Freddie Mercury was aren't to demystify him somehow and the way to do that was looking at his background. I thought to myself here's a young man immigrated to a country defied all obstacles to do what he loved, and that was one thing that that I could understand not to compare myself to him in any way, shape or form. But I am a first generation American my family came from Egypt and saw a better life for their children in the US. And you know, obviously, like so many people they would've loved for us to be doctors and lawyers. My sister is a doctor. So she fulfilled that aspect, but it was very difficult to convince anyone that I wanted to do this. And that I could do this. Did you feel like you were going to be letting them down if you failed that that they came here in an off you were already born when they came here, but still? Probably knew they'd be having children more children and often with immigrants. The idea is it's for the children. So if you failed as an actor, would you have been letting letting them down did you did you feel guilty for even trying for an acting career? It's a good question. Yeah. I did feel guilty and the only way to compensate for that was just to to give it my all. There was one moment. I was in my apartment that we were living in four of us in a two bedroom apartment, and I was I would wake up early just I was sleeping in in the living room at that point. And I had a stack of Manila envelopes and every morning, I would get up and put my head shot and resume in the Manila envelopes. And remember my father one day standing next to my mom saying. We have very tenacious, son. And I don't think that he knows that I heard him. But I heard that and it gave me that extra boost I needed to just keep going, and I I would take those Manila envelopes at was delivering pizza would put them glue them or take them to every pizza box. I would send out I would keep them behind the register of the fast food restaurant. I I would be working at anyone even produce Oriel came in. They were getting a head shot and resume in there to go back. Did you did you deliver pizzas to like famous producers directors? I did get an audition out of it once and I did. I did. Yeah. I did was for commercial and of still kept in touch with that person. Gave me the audition. Did you get the commercial? I did not what was it for Eminem's. Wow. I will tell you this one day. I did get a call. I got a call from Mara Casey who was a casting director for the Gilmore girls. And she asked to speak with the Romney Malik agent. And I said speaking, and she said, well, can I talk to about ROY Malik coming in and for a role on the Gilmore girls? I said, yeah. And she's in who am I speaking with? I said this is he and she said, you don't you don't have an agent, do, you know, but we can work on that. And she started laughing and she said. Are you are you sag are you part of the Screen Actors Guild nice as of yet? No. But that's something else. We we can work on as well. And she kept laughing. She's like listen. "I wanted to share with you my conversations that I had a couple of weeks ago in London. With the stars of this movie, most notably Rami, Molly who you may know from the television series, mister robot Romney's, very very talented actor actor by trade. He doesn't do all of the singing in this movie. His vocals are enhanced with actual, Freddie. Mercury vocals and also another singer whose name, unfortunately, it's escaping me now, but I'll look it up who is a Freddie Mercury sound alike. So it's the melding of all three of their voices that create the vocals that you hear in this motion picture, it's the physical transformation though, and the movements the subtlety of the movements that really struck me with Rami Malik as Freddie Mercury. We all had. Pre- pretty drastic transformation in this film. And what was helpful? I think was knowing we had to emulate them. Step for step move for move in the Live Aid sequence at the end. And so what we got our physicality thrown in there quite quickly. We had movement teacher named Polly Bennett who helped all of us immensely throughout. But there's there's so much time. I think collectively watching all the archival footage and picking things up left and right that we just kept in our back pocket. Do you run the in particular? Did you study his movement his speech patterns because it's it's uncanny. I I was a music teacher then. Yeah. Played all of his hits. And remember the nothing more than three minute. The rule they had back. Then I was also there are sort of in the forefront of the aids crisis. The darkest days of the aids crisis in this movie, so celebratory. Trek and tragically nostalgic. There's so many ways, but I mean, you you must have had to capture all.

"We need one of the things that came out last week was that people that really knew him felt that he was being gay washed. If you were s a whitewash gay wash everyone in college is cleaning him up. So I thought what are some of the craziest stories about rock and rolls. Best loved hellraiser who would be seventy two years old if he had known sat. Yeah. That's it. He was young when he died. He lived forty five years like a man possessed, and he was just, you know, balls to the walls he loved excess. So here's some of the. Here. Here's a mess and stories. Okay. So Elton John told uncut in two thousand and one Freddie could out party me, which is saying something Queen was well known in the music industry for their outrageous parties, most notable was the jazz launch party at the New Orleans Fairmont hotel in nineteen seventy which featured wholesome delays. Julia lake nude waiters and waitresses. A fellow biting heads off live. Chickens. Naked models wrestling in a liver pit row. Okay. And little people swanning about with trace of cocaine strapped to their heads. That is true. Eighteen seventy seventy eight. Oh to be a fly on that wall. Allen sounds fun at the height of Star Wars mania in one thousand nine hundred seventy nine and eighty Freddie. Mercury commemorated the movie and the only way that made sense. He would sage he would stock the stage for the encore performance of we will rock, you perched on Darth Vader shoulders. I mean, let's face it. It was probably a Rhody plate. Okay. The photo. And a photographer you this photographer, Tom Cowan's? He said, it was pandemonium everyone thought it was so funny. It was so Freddie, it was so over the top and presumably, Freddie, Mercury came fresh from one of the quickies. He reputedly always had between the main shore main show and the encore and sometimes even between songs when you would change costs. Tell me you're kidding me. That was always the story about him. He was the prime subject for all the old chestnuts of rack mythology one of the tales buzzing around, Freddie, Mercury is the old chestnut that might be similar to the Richard Gere and the gerbils gerbil one about employing a bunch of groupies to take turns blowing cocaine episode. Okay. We can't be good for you. With raw cotton. Yeah. Cannot be just this people. It may also be mixed up because that is a myth their story. That's been told about Stevie nicks. That. E one of those things that just out there is out there like the Richard Gere another one that was attached him as the well-worn classic. Did shares had mentioned about her about having a rib removed, but he did supposedly. So he could cut out the middleman, and please himself if you know what I mean bending over. Easier to bend over a rib. Okay. That's that's. Marilyn Manson, just stop. I'm just saying daddy. Never even heard well to it. You don't go to all the dirty places that I go to this. Laurie. Said about Marilyn Manson my other com other musicians. Unbelievable. He and he wasn't who he thought who we thought he was because stage he was naturally shy. According to friends on sage he was just a maniac maniac. But how does that explain his insatiable appetite and his orgies and everything else? I wanted to truth is away from the stage in the gossip he was kind of a closed book Roger Taylor, and Brian May where the principal mouthpieces. Mercury. The image everything behind him was opaque lyricist. Tim rice who co wrote with mercury on the burst birth alone album came out in eighty eight they both in he insists, and well as well as Freddie mercury's, personal assistant, Peter Freestone, insist bohemian rhapsody was his. Is coming out song. But no one ever realized I told you that when we went into the lyrics human rap city. I thought it would do some digging because six years ago in twenty twelve mercury intimate biography of Freddie, Mercury came out who wrote Leslie Ann Jones, and she is the actress. No, no, Leslie, Ann Jones. I don't know. Warren. Yeah. But she is a journalist she's gone on tour with the Rolling Stones David Bowie. Pay Kartini Elton, John she was standing back stage with the late who bass guitar player. John whistle. Whistle entwistle. Excuse me. At Wembley stadium on Live Aid day in July, nineteen ninety five and watch, Freddie. Mercury which I guess we see in the movie bohemian rhapsody, and it was eighty thousand fans, and it was seen all around the world. I do remember too. So she's the journalists who did this. And he in the book, she describes her rise to international superstardom and she digs deep into his past. She got over a hundred interviews with people who are close to him. And Freddie, Mercury many of them opening up for the first time, you know, because he was the first major rockstar to die of aids bright, and he did not let anybody know he denied it. And he just said I'm too old at forty to go onstage. Indeed, lesbian Jones told the Hollywood reporter when your book came out that one of the biggest rag revelations in her book came from Oscar winning Tim rice, where he just said she said Tim sat me down and talk me through the words for boogeyman rhapsody. He pointed hours very obvious to him early on. It was Freddie's coming out song. But. The the reporter of this book describes the mercury is having been incredibly mischievous pointing out the the two greatest love affairs in the ones. Freddie was married at one time complicated emotional love life were with women but with his sex life. He could only satisfies needs with guys right is. And so. You know? And of course, the he had this the one gal who is kind of a famous quote about him this woman, a former lover the German soft porn star. Barbara valentino. Always described her boyfriend is mostly gay, you know, but Freddie, Mercury he'd been friends with Michael Jackson for a long time. And he used to come and see the Queen shows all the time, really. And that is how our friendship grew. And then he told a reporter at the time just think I could have been on thriller think of all the royalties. I've missed out and they work together. They had three tracks in the can one song called there must be more to life than this which appeared on Freddie mercury's for solo album when he dedicated to his cats. Called victory and then a song called victory, which is featured on the Jackson five's victory tug back album and state of shock which became a Michael Jackson duet with Mike, Mick Jagger. They were never finished with, Freddie. They were great songs, but they were both so busy at that period of time. And then, you know, the thing that happened, Freddie. Mercury did admit that friendship with Michael Jackson fell out because Michael objected to Freddie Mercury. He'd gone to the restroom and Freddie was in the living room, and there's a mound of cocaine on his diet is living room table. And so, and then I guess he was good buddies with David Bowie. Freddie, Mercury in the end. David said, listen, why don't we just write a song? And the result, of course was under pressure. That's right. Ooh. Initially that song under pressure was entitled people on streets. It came about by pure chance. Freddie gave an interview the tune which was recorded in queens mount studios in Montrose, Switzerland after David Bowie had met up with the ban in the Swiss towns pob turned out to be among queens, most challenging the mixing desk collapse. But we wanted to remake the song from scratch and things came to a head at one point David Bowie refused to allow its release. But later backed down that Tober nineteen Eighty-one released of under pressure was Bowie's first single with another artists every number twenty nine in the US and became queen's second UK number one. Yeah. And then what else? Freddie. Mercury middle America. And the coasts he always called Manhattan sin cities in the eighties. Not Las Vegas, but you have to come at the right time said day too long. It's just hypnotic your trip in every day at eight or nine in the morning and taking throat injection. So so I can still sing it's a real place. I love it. So he was a big Dargie. Yeah. Wow. What the heck is thrown injection. I don't know. Or something like that. And and and of course after two or three years after Queen started. They almost broke up. We felt it wasn't working, Freddie. Mercury. This is another nearly there to ensure works in the business. It was getting too much. But something inside the three of us kept his scoring and we learn from our experiences. Good and bad. According to Freddie, Mercury. The band argued about everything even the air that they breathe. And bandmates Brian May and Roger Taylor said, Freddie, was always the peacemaker. He was our great diplomat. Okay. So and information Laurie I know it's just a lot of good stuff out there. And on the business side Queen was successful beyond all possible. Hope I mean CRA, Freddie, Mercury died sixty million dollars. And he got more three fourths of the songwriting credits. The other two it just gives it now. Well, now, Brian May and Roger Taylor in whoever's in Friday's the state again. Yeah. So anyway. Wow. Now, I gotta go see bohemian rhapsody. I gotta see this, man. All right, listen. We'll be right back out to see this, man. And you want to now Canada China. All right. We'll be right back. You can't possibly listen every.

"So he bounced well, and so originally the band had been pushing for the the movie itself to be not so much of putting Freddie Mercury. It'd be like a I original script. Yeah. They wanted like him to die in the first act. And then like what happens to the? The three remaining members. It's like nobody can see that movie and spoiler alert. That is not this movie. Yes. Thank god. Yeah. So thank God. At least, you know, was a saving grace with it. The other thing is Romney Malik. He's so good spectacular and y- and so many teeth so many toothy and the heat it took years for him to kinda 'cause when he was filming mister robot. He talked with us on either Kimmel or somebody else when they would be done filming for the day of mister robot who would put in the dentures and just talk rectus because it takes a lot, Freddie, had a very unique speech pattern had a very unique. I mean, one of the most unique and stunning vocal ranges of any rockstar because of the extra four incisors as he would say, yes. And that was I mean, so yes Romney is fantastic. I had a couple issues though, one as good as he is. He was never given a chance to actually sing right? Literally. All hominy. Combination of actual archival. Yup. Song and then like an impersonator and roemeling. Yeah. Like, just so he would be at the piano, giving this great scene in this monologue, you to down the piano start playing whether it was actually him or somebody else does not matter, and you would get into the Mike as soon as it opened his mouth it was recording of Queen. And it immediately was just jarring. I was like come on, man. Like at least give them a shot, and I get it. But you really wanna hear Remy? Malik saying part of let me hear, Freddie, MAC. But at the same time like I think if they'd done some stuff and like the beginning of his career. Yeah. Where's a little rougher because that way, we all know what, Freddie? Mercury sounds like. So we have we had heard Rami. We'd be like are cool. Like if I want to hear the real thing. I can hear the real thing. I just think it was just an unfair choice. Right. Yeah. I think I think I think you're right. But on the flip side, there's a reason why Remy Malik doesn't have a hit single. Right. He's not Bradley Cooper. Right. Yeah. But like if you're doing a, Freddie Mercury movie like you can't have like subpar vocals, and I don't like we don't we weren't really given the opportunity to judge. But I feel pretty confident in saying that. Yeah. Like, he wouldn't have measured up. I can measure mercury. He it really is tough. Because there it is rare that a musical bio-pic is able to nail that Jamie, FOX has Ray fantastic so much so that he put on album, but he's a singer, right? He is a singer as well. Walk in Phoenix. Walk the line. I was impressed with that. This just it feels like they just not even give them a chance right which was a little bit unfair. I get the reasoning, but I was like like Rummy I've been a huge fan of his for years. And I was hoping this would be the vehicle that would really drive him in the public eye. His performance is so spot on and so many especially the third act when he has. A shorter hair. And the mustache is pretty uncanny silhouettes of him, even though he is significantly smaller like in stature, Freddie, Mercury was like five inches taller than Romney us a pretty big. And even even though they don't let him, you know, do do do his own vocals, necessarily or like really like put that into focus. I think what he really nails is like the showmanship..

"So this makes me believe that this story is true about the fact that they're trying, you know up attention. You'll remember that they or maybe you don't I I don't remember. If we talked about it. Sorry. I'm thinking on the fly. I saw story yesterday about one of the actresses in the movie coming to the movies defense. Fence in its portrayal of Freddie, mercury's personal life. Why that's interesting is because why would one of the stars be speaking out in defense of the film other than to get attention for the film. Right, right. I'm saying right in any other situation. I don't feel like you would have one of your stars court controversy around the film. Right. And I think from what I understand the the the criticism of the film is that it doesn't is to your point. It does not really accurately portray much about Freddie, mercury's life because it is endorsed by or it's sort of blessed by Queen the band Queen. They they really saw it as an opportunity to get their brand cemented. Exactly. And so it doesn't tell the story as as you the viewer a want to see it and be no it. They are sort of running it through the lens of how they want it to be seen, right? And a lot of consensus about this movie. Is that Ramey Malik himself as Freddie Mercury? Does a good job in that performance itself? But the rest of the movie just crumbles around it, right? And there's nothing to sustain an entertaining film. Or you're not learning anything. It's way too bad. Tragic. Yeah. It's really unfortunate. All right. When we come back. You may have heard that the mega millions name the mega billions. Has been awarded to one lucky person. May it wasn't me. But it was somebody. We'll talk about it after this on mytalk one zero.

"Roads. Yep. The bar. You know what? What the laundromat or it's listening and washing your clothes out. Yeah. I'm listening. Do that at work. Wash your clothes at work. The workplace kitchenette take us with you. Details. Details. Moayed of moving. Who? That's right. I saw bohemian rhapsody last night. And I'll give you the review, and then I'll tell you about something to happen. I feared. The result of this movie about a year and a half ago two years when it was this movie has been plagued almost from the beginning. If you guys remember Sasha baron Cohen signed on to play, Freddie Mercury. And I believe he was also a producer. And then he left the project created. Yeah. And he said on stern. Sometimes that's I almost cost sometimes when you hear creative differences or were pursuing other opportunities. That's usually a BS line in this case there really was creative differences and the crux of the issue for Sasha. Was that Sasha actually wanted to do a good movie Sasha really wanted to to go into the nuances of Freddie, mercury's life and not just skate over the details. And and because Queen was involved the surviving members of Queen Sasha felt that they really wanted and look it's human nature. I can understand they wanted to kind of gloss over some of the more. Assorted tawdry details. Yeah. Anyway, the movie. The movie is disappointing. It is. It is only slightly better than a bio pic. You would see on TNT or maybe net flicks. And I say that because it's very formula. And I look and I like a good cheese ball bio pic? But it's like there. There's nothing. Really inventive here. It's almost like the two four six directors. Yeah. They had a checklist of everything you're supposed to do in a bio-pic. Okay. We're going to start especially for a rockstar. Okay. We're gonna start with that Rockstars last performance. And then we're going to go backwards in time. And then at the end of the movie, we're going to go back to that final performance and wrap it up. Okay. And then we're going to start with the parents that don't believe in them. And then we're going to talk about their self doubt. And then they make it and then the band breaks up. So it's like a checklist of everything. But none of those things are examined in any detail. Which is a shame because there are so many aspects of Freddie, mercury's life in queens existence that you wish this movie would have hyper focused not been so broad in their time line, you there somewhere in this movie. There is a really good que-. Gene movie and somewhere in this movie exists a really good, Freddie. Freddie. Mercury biography. Sadly, this movie is neither of those things because they're too broad and the time line, which then doesn't allow them to really examine the great nuances of, Freddie, mercury's life or the bands existence together. And how do they dealt really with fame? I mean, it's like they meet and boom, they're famous and then boom, Freddie, Mercury is often running and boom. Interesting bits. No, no, right. That's what we want. We wanted to be some depth there. What actually happens? Now. I wanna know. Like, for instance, let me take one aspect. I would love to know. And Colin brought this up Colin being younger and not really living through Queen. He's like, wow, I know that that era because you know, Freddie, almost until I believe till he died kind of danced around the fact that he had eight that he did he had aids. And he wasn't real open with talking about his sexuality. I wanted to examine that a little bit more. I wanna do examine the dynamic between the band, and Freddie, you saw a little bit of it. You know, when Freddie really got kind of for lack of a better term high on the horse. A slow down and talk about that the band's dynamic of Freddie's self destruction. And how that affected the band at large. But they just it was kind of like one scene, and we moved on. Anyway. Now, that's that's that's my those are my beefs spill see this film are. Yeah. Because you should see this in a theater, you know, what saves it is Ramey. Malik does a fantastic job. Sometimes it borders on imitation and not a performance. But one reviewer I believe from the LA times said this, and I wholeheartedly agree any buddy any performer that can stand onstage stand on film for two plus hours and come to life. Is Freddie Mercury deserves our respect. Because Freddie, Mercury without much debate is probably one of the most energetic dynamic performers in music, especially in the latter. Half of the twentieth century for you to embody any aspect of Freddie is pretty remarkable. So for that Ramey deserves a lot of praise for this performance. He sadly is sometimes better than the movie. He's in. Now, we're going to take a break we're gonna break a little earlier when we come back. I'm going to tell you why. The the night took a detour. We'll be right back. If you're a woman boobs..
