"It is gone. Goodbye. Alex Cole with a three run home run breaking this game wide open here in the top of the 9th inning it is now a four hit game for him with two singles a two run double and a three run home run. What a day for Alex call as the nationals poured on it's now Washington 11 in St. Louis four. I was Charlie slows on the nationals radio network with that call. Yeah, final score 11 to 6 Washington Wainwright allowed 9 hits and four runs over 5 innings. Since our last podcast, radio host gottlieb put out a statement admitting he made a false claim on the Freddie Freeman contract talks with the braves, got Lee tweeted on June 29th at Casey close who was representing Freddie Freeman and negotiation with the braves, never told Freddie about the braves final offer the statement from godly but upon further vetting of my sources a review of the lawsuit filed against me in this matter and direct conversation with Casey himself. I have learned that the contact I alleged did not occur and there was no credible basis for stating that it did. I'm glad Doug got to talk to Casey close 'cause I would love to have him on and ask him a simple question. How is it that Freddie Freeman wound up signing his second choice, the Dodgers instead of the braves for less money for more years. That question remains unanswered from Casey close. "Chuck chuck is the one dude that's just like, yeah, I came in the game better than all of them dudes because I think if draymond looks at this like I'm gonna go, I don't blame these guys necessarily didn't fully understand this industry and this job until I got into it and started doing it more. But hey man, these cats that do this by and large are really, really good at this. Really, really good. And I think it's a few of them do is they'll be out here like, yeah, well, I got a degree in journalism. Okay, if I go get a degree in basketball, that'll be not about to be out here playing in the NBA, you know? The levels that they try to compete at, they trying to compete with what is in effect. The NBA. And I wish them the best, right? There's no reason for me to want and I personally like working at this company. I love seeing it when to form a athletes come in and watching cats get better, right? Like all those NFL live folks, like I really enjoy watching it being like, yo, they're in there. Perk, perk has gotten so much better in like the last two years. Like, I really like watching dudes and most of them with perk. I know the NFL lives. It was like perk I don't know, but like I legitimately like watching somebody that I know takes this seriously and gets better and gets better and gets better. And I wonder when draymond, who seems to be a guy that always wants to get better, he gonna figure that out. He gonna get to August and be like, damn, what exactly is it that I'm supposed to be over here talking about? 'cause that's how we feel. You'll be calling up your celebrity friends. The point you make about, so if we are being critical of them, like I'm completely fine with people also in them being critical of us. Like that does not make me uncomfortable, but the point that you're making is interesting, the same way that I don't understand all the nuances of post footwork or whatever and I may not be able to break down all the lapses in defense that are happening. Like the same, I'm not arguing that what we're doing is as difficult, but I did not appreciate and we've talked about this before. I did not appreciate how freaking talented Stephen a is until I actually worked with him. Not even watched him. Watching him now, I can appreciate things, but working with them and understanding the musicality

"I gotta give some credit to the dolphins fans 'cause they are, in my view, the most sensitive fanbase in football right now, but I came after them back when they were tanking. And dolphins fans filled up my mansions with all type of hate. And then all those reports came out that the owner was allegedly paying the coach to drop games. My Mitch is they weren't as full in the first time, but I had some dolphins fans in there like you was right. A full fan base was like, oh yeah. What you said a couple years ago, my bad.

"No, it hold up. He's from California. Yo. I didn't realize that. Like, I thought he was one of those braves dudes that was also, you know, from somewhere in a somewhere in Georgia like in that Atlanta area. Now I'm looking at this wiki page and it says he was born in Fountain Valley California, his parents are from Canada for what it all he grew up on angels fans or maybe he got beef. I don't know, but he is from Southern California, a clearly wishes he was still with the braves. If I'm an agent, like, that's how I want to get fired. By getting you this buddy, I got my man so much money. He had to fire me. I would wear that if I made it. So what it sounds like to me is the agents just didn't think the braves would make that trade in an hour. Yeah. Right. He thought that the braves would be like, now we're not going to do that, or they would step up just a little bit. And then he would say, okay, cool. Okay, cool. We'll take your deal or whatever it was, right? And I'm pretty sure there was a gap, right? But a lot of the salary, the Dodgers are paying as deferred. And so there's real questions as to whether or not the total value of the deal he ultimately signed is actually going to prove to be the value of the deal that the braves had offered just all of this. I'm just looking at it from Freddie standpoint and being like, so when are you going to be able to let this go?

"Very much It's now 6 36 on Wall Street That's time for the Bloomberg sports update and here's John stat showing All right John no secret the Giants need to improve their offensive line They don't have a lot of salary cap space but I'm opening day of free agency They did add two offensive lineman Mark Lewinsky had been a starting guard with Indianapolis and center John Feliciano who was with buffalo another guard Lake and Tomlinson He's joining the jets coming from the forty-niners jets also got tight end CJ azuma from Cincinnati They reached on Braxton barrios who was an all pro last season as a kick returner tight end Evan engram leaving the Giants He was once their first round draft pick he's headed to Jacksonville Josh Donaldson joined the Yankees in Tampa the day after the big trade last year Donaldson while with the twins accused his now teammate Garrett Cole of using sticky stuff to help doctor the ball cold and stuck Donaldson out three times Whatever happened Obviously he felt like it was a better idea to probably strike me out but she did a few times So at the end of the day I'm happy to be on the same team And I have to strike out against him more Yankees have been in talks with Oakland about acquiring first baseman Matt Olson He's instead headed to Atlanta which means Freddie Freeman will likely not resign with the brave Nets way tonight in Orlando the unvaccinated Kyrie Irving couldn't play but did attend Sunday's home game also went into the nets locker room for doing that sitting in New York find the nets $50,000 Cameron Smith won The Rain delayed players championship golf in Florida by one shot John stash that one Bloomberg sports John All right John thanks a lot It is now 6 37 on Wall Street and that brings us to stocks and some of the names that are moving in the pre market this morning for that we're joined by Bloomberg radio and TV markets correspondent Gupta fresh offer 12 hour nap Fresh off my 12 hour nap folks I got so much sleep You're so refreshed So great Not to brag on a Tuesday but here we are You are seeing some futures higher when it comes to the NASDAQ 100 The S&P features kind of flat But underneath the hood only 16 stocks are actually higher in the pre market So that does tell you that there is looks like to be a little bit of pain here at the opening Let's talk about what is moving to the upside and that of course is going to be this airlines Delta coming out seeing one quarter or first quarter revenue excuse me about 78% recovered compared to 2019 levels That's a big deal because their previous view was 72 to 76% but that news is pulling up delta shares da L is your ticker up 1.1% in the pre market It's also pulling up the other airlines with it southwest for example LUV your ticker up 1% in the pre market UAL is for united up 7 tenths of 1% Even American Airlines catching a little bit of a bid here up four tenths of a percent AAL is your ticket there That's unusual on a day that's pretty risk off to see the airlines actually outperforming also keep in mind you are seeing some moves to the upside and the defense spaces a Lockheed Martin LMT is your ticker up four tenths of a person This looks like a continued bid from yesterday after Germany said it would purchase Lockheed Martin's F-35 warplanes as well as €15 fighters of course we know it is upgrading its military response creating a budget of a $110 billion to modernize its armed forces Of course on the back of Russia's invasion of Ukraine So you are seeing those defense names take a leg higher as well LMT like I said up four tenths of a percent But then there are some downside stories and we should stick to this Those downside stories for example are a lot of the oil companies Occidental zero XY is your worst performer this morning down 4.9% and with it some of those other oil names this really comes back on the idea of lower oil prices perhaps coming back on the idea of the China lockdown in Shenzhen This morning 97 24 is so under a $100 a barrel Ugly morning overnight in the Asian session Very ugly morning and once again it comes down to those COVID restrictions that they're putting in zero COVID policy It also comes down with some kind of concerns that perhaps China is the next country to be sanctioned just because of their ties to Russia and you're seeing that show up in those U.S. listed Chinese stocks The likes of Alibaba for example BAB as your tigger for the ADRs down 6 and a half percent in the pre market JD as well JD is also the ticker Also declining four and a half percent So keep an eye on those ADRs That's where you're seeing a lot of pain Yeah we were asking the question M live I should say was asking the questions My former employer Yeah And where are all the dip buyers Because they've jumped in since 2018 and so you know one of the questions to mold this morning as the NASDAQ futures turn green up 12 points right now Pretty Gupta from our markets team S&P futures right now two points lower and the NASDAQ the.

"Little glimpse at the my future, too. 5 days later at four o'clock in the morning, Chelsea's water breaks and their son Brandon is born about four and a half hours later. It was incredible. It's just seeing Brandon born and all never thinking that she was going to be able to do it again. Let alone Carrie and then deliver with no problems. That was special for us. And that's a pretty good end to any movie buster, but that is not the end because there's another baby out of the way. On Valentine's Day, maximus is born to the surrogate. I got to be in the room behind a curtain and right when maximus was born, I got to walk over and see him for the first time and it was just like surreal that he was here. The love that I felt the connection I felt was immediate with him. I just knew that he was mine immediately. Freddy, who grew up with the Freeman 5 with his two older brothers with rosemary with Fred, he now has his own Freeman 5, with Charlie, and with Brandon, and now with maximus and he's sitting on a couch and talking with his father after he is the three boys all at home and he says to his dad, you know, this is really come full circle for me. Buster, when you look back on all of this, what does this whole story say to you? It really speaks to me to the amount of love that Freddie has within that family. Just to see this wonderful family so connected and holding together through all these really very difficult moments from rosemary's cancer and her death and Fred's health scare to all the way in the last year, everything that Chelsea had to go through to grow this family in the way that they really wanted to. That's why it was so inspiring. Foster only, thank you for taking us full circle with the story of Freddie Freeman and the new Freeman 5. Thanks for having me. I'm Pablo taure. "He eventually is able to fall asleep. He wakes up as temperatures come down, but it was an incredible scare for Freddie in the family. He had lost about ten pounds because of that illness buster and his strength had plummeted and he thought he might die in a very genuine way. Absolutely. He wasn't just not sure exactly what was going to happen that night because there was just so little information about it and as the night was going along. He was texting with the braves, athletic trainer, trying to find out what the next thing he should do could be. And as they move forward, there was a question about, okay, is he going to be able to recover? So as Freddie is recovering and he does end up reporting to camp, how did his illness impact the start of his baseball season in 2020? He was terrible. Bryce Harper told me that he couldn't believe that Freddie got back on the field so quickly. Is Freddie said, you know, he was in bed, recovering from coronavirus, and then three days later, he's in the lineup against Jacob de Grom in early on, he was terrible. He had no energy and after a couple weeks, his thought was, you know what? This might not work, and he actually raised the possibility in his conversation with Chelsea about stepping away. The first week or two, you know, I was hitting like one 80, one 90, I was exhausted. I'm doing everything I can to hit this ball and I couldn't do it. I was just lost. I really haven't said anything about this, but I was like, chill, so I don't know if I can do this. I think I'm hurting the team. I remember him calling me and asking, he's like, should I opt out? And she sent me this quote that pretty much changed my season. It said, you didn't come this far to only come this far. You're 30 years old. You have ten years in the big leagues. You can't let this beat you. I responded with your absolutely right. And from that point forward after about two weeks, he just takes off, he bats three 78, the rest of the season.

"Come look at it. So she had Charlie, draw a picture of a mom with a belly and Freddie walks in the picture because Charlie's only three years old isn't precise, and he's trying to figure out what happens and he sees the pregnancy stick and Freddie is absolutely overcome with emotion. It really was perfect. You could tell how happy she was because I was so happy. They have a huge hug. And of course, the first thought for both of them is, well, what are we going to do about the surrogate? What are we going to do about the egg? And I said, well, what do you want to do? And within ten seconds we're like, let's do it. We didn't know how our surrogate was going to react. And once our surrogate just said, you get to have twins now. After a conversation with a surrogate, they decide, they're going to move.

"So it's unsurprising, buster given how Freddie grew up that he wants a big family. And a couple years later, he and Chelsea decide they want more kids, but what happens next? They begin to deal with fertility issues. Chelsea tells a story about how the time she was starting to try to become pregnant with their second child. So are some of her friends. Last time I got pregnant immediately, so I thought, you know, this time it'll be the same. I've had a couple girlfriends that we were all trying the same time and slowly and slowly like they all got pregnant and I didn't. And she had assumed because it was so easy the first time there wasn't going to be an issue. But in Charlie's birth, she had had a C section. And so she felt like she just wasn't right. I had like a gut feeling that it was something when my uterus I had an emergency C section with Charlie. I never felt like my insides were correct. They continue to try to get pregnant and month after month after month. The pregnancy sticks shows she's not pregnant and it becomes absolutely frustrating. It happens so easy with Charlie, why isn't it happening easy again? I think the hardest part about going through infertility is just mentally, you are so drained. When I talk to Chelsea for this piece, you could just see in her eyes, how much this weight honor every month and she estimated over a hundred pregnancy tests that came back negative. And how difficult that was in part because she knew how much Freddie wanted to have a family. And Freddie saw how hard she was trying, and he was devastated for her that it wasn't happening in the way that they had envisioned. I think she was more down because she knew how bad I wanted a big family. That was the most difficult thing for me was to keep my wife excited happy about the future when we're going through such a tough spot of bringing more kids into this world. So after trying to get pregnant for some time, buster. Freddie and Chelsea, they see a Doctor Who examines Chelsea and the doctor determines that they need to consider alternatives. In order to have another kid, what did they decide to do? The doctor lays out some options for them. And one of those is surrogacy. Gestational surrogacy. In other words, they get the egg from Chelsea, sperm from Freddie, combine them and then insert them into a surrogate. And that initially for Chelsea was something she would right away was like, yes, I'm very open to that. Freddie had some questions about that. Buster, where do you go if you're Freddie Freeman to get answers? It really is a remarkable part of the story. And it's part of the reason why that Freddie and Chelsea are absolutely convinced that there were larger forces at play here as they went through this. So Chelsea, as she's looking into surrogacy, finds out the name of another Major League Baseball player who's been through this. And he gets the name of that player's wife. She reaches out.

"Getting paid up to two days early with direct deposit is another reason banking with Capital One is one of the easiest decisions in the history of decisions. Even easier than deciding to listen to another episode of your favorite podcast. And with no fees or minimums on checking and savings accounts, is it even a decision? That is banking reimagined. What's in your wallet? Terms apply, see Capital One dot com slash bank, Capital One NA, member FDIC. All right, buster, so it is 2016 and Freddie Freeman is now on top of the world. He's a two time all star. He's the face of the Atlanta Braves. He's a few years into this 8 year a $135 million contract. He's married to the love of his life. He's about to start this family, which he's been looking forward to. So genuinely, how important was starting a family to Freddy? It was everything for Freddie. Because in part of how much he loved kids, because in part of what he experiences a child how close their family was before rosemary's death and now close, they pulled together after she passed away after his father's health scare. When he was 12 years old, and there was something that Chelsea talked about that she knew that Freddie wanted to have a big family. I think that's all Freddie wanted in life but to be a great dad, like his dad. So in September of 2016, Freddie and Chelsea celebrate the birth of their son, Charlie. What was that like for Freddie? Oh, he was just over the moon. It was everything. I have ever imagined ever dreamed of, it was right there. And laying on my stomach. That's all I ever wanted. And Chelsea talks about how happy Freddie was and what a naturally was after Charlie's birth. He was just so proud. It's almost like he had this natural instinct of what he needed to do as a dad. And right away there's this incredible bond that to this day that you see, when the two of them play together, it's so neat how they relate to each other. What do you think you're going to hit? Let's see. All right, let's do it. Oh yeah. Why is your tongue coming out? And when they're together, all they do is play baseball, and that's really the way it's been since Charlie began to.

"So buster Freddie Freeman loses his mother tragically at age ten, two years after that, he almost loses his dad at age 12, how does this impact and shape his development as a baseball player? So after mister Freeman's health scare at that point, he commits to his three boys. You know what I'm going to do a better job of taking care of myself. And he does that. And he helps to foster Freddy's development as a baseball player. You know, about 6 months after his mom passed away, he had stopped playing and then baseball really became an outlet for him through his teenage years. And he's big, and he's strong and right away. Folks in the area notice, this is someone who potentially has a chance as a baseball player. And by the time he gets to his senior year in high school, he's a potential first or second round draft pick. So buster at this point, the plan is for ready to go to college unless he is a first or second rounder in the major league draft. But as the draft gets closer, how did things change in Freddy's mind? At two o'clock in the morning, he knocks on his dad's doors, and he basically said, look, I want to play baseball. We had that in our mind that if you're not first round pick, let's just go to school and get your degree. As we were getting closer to the draft, you know, it just kind of dawned on me that I just wanted to play baseball. For Fred Freeman, that was an incredibly important thing to get his degree. But he sees Freddie's passion to play professional baseball and he relents. And so after the braves draft him in the second round, he asked he signs the paper because at that point, Freddie was 17. And the new deal between Fred and Freddie was that he was gonna get four years to get to the big leagues and if it didn't happen, then you know what? He was gonna go to college. I think it worked out for him. So Freddie gets to the minor leagues. He gets drafted. He ends up being a prospect of note. And after a few years, he gets called up to the big leagues in September of 2010, and in a lot of ways buster, those first few games, they seem forgettable. But there is this one at bat in Philadelphia on September 21st. What happened? Yeah, against future Hall of Famer Roy halliday. And as his dad told us he was watching on television and he saw Freddie inserted into the game as a pinch hitter and he was like, yeah, holiday is going to strike about on three pitches. We head now to the top of the 7th inning braves have some more work to do. Freddie Freeman will come on and pitch it. I got up there, you know, I'm just a 21 year old kid that had 13 at bats. As Freeman jumps on the first pitch and he launches a tape measure shot deep to right and gone. His first career Homer against Roy Hamilton. It was one of those swings where you hit the ball and you don't really feel the ball hit your back, and I was like, oh my gosh. That ball's going out. And you love the old video of it because you can see Freddy as a young player. He's a very respectful understated person and as he's rounding the bases, having hit this home run off this incredible pitcher, he was just suppressing a grin. And it's not till he gets back to the dugout and some of his teammates are giving him a hard time good naturedly that he finally can smile. So aside from that Homer against Roy halliday, buster, 2010 for Freddie Freeman was kind of unremarkable, but the next year, 2011, when he's officially a rookie that's his official rookie season, that would be super important for him both on and off the field. That's because he meets his future wife Chelsea. The first time I met Chelsea, it's 2011. Spring training. It was just so comfortable with her, you know, I didn't have to be someone different. And the first thing that he notices is she doesn't really know that much about baseball. When I first met him, I didn't know anything about baseball at all. He would quiz me after each game, so to help me learn baseball. She had flown up to Atlanta and I went over for, I think with two strikeouts and.

"This past spring and exclusive emotional portrait of one of the game's best players. Someone who opens up as never before about loss and loved ones and how hard it could be to build a family of your own. I'm Pablo Toure. It's Friday, October 29th. This is ESPN daily. Buster, thanks for joining me man. I appreciate it. Sure, great to talk with you. So we're talking to you today about this documentary you reported for E 60. It is called full circle. The Freddy Freeman story. And as that title might imply, you'd chart his journey, two Major League Baseball, but the journey, the story is as much about family as anything buster about his journey to starting his own, and why that is so deeply important to him. And so I just wanted to start here at the beginning of that circle. To talk about who Freddy Freeman was before he became the all star the MVP. We now know him as today. He was a happy kid growing up in Orange County, California. With two older brothers with his mom rosemary and his dad Fred, you know, fell in love with baseball in an early age. My first real memory is tee ball. I was 5 years old. I'm left handed. I went up there and stood left handed and I guess my coach tried to turn me around right handed and my mom came storming up and goes, he's left handed. He's gonna stay left handed. And he was a kid, as he said, his mom loved him very hard. I think I'm a spitting image of her. Just such a caring loyal person. Her love just poured out and it poured into me. This is someone who he was incredibly close to. And looked at her as being, you know, his backbone. And someone they could count on for support. But she had gotten melanoma when he was 5 years old. He didn't really have an awareness of it. And then in the fall of 1999, she had a recurrence and within 6 months, she was in hospice. And Freddie, as he said to me, all along, he just assumed that his mom was going to make it through. So Freddie is ten years old, buster, when his mom gets diagnosed with this recurrence of melanoma and the stability that he's known is suddenly threatened. What happened next? Well, he and his older brothers, every day after school, they would immediately leave and rather than go and play the sports, which they all played. It was a baseball family. They would go to the hospital and then.

"Hey, everyone, Pablo here. We're doing something a little different for today's episode because tonight the Atlanta Braves are gonna try and retake their lead in the World Series against the Houston Astros. And one of my favorite episodes of this podcast is a show we did back in April, about first baseman Freddie Freeman, the MVP of the braves. And the story is about so much more than baseball. I think it's gonna stick with you as it is stuck with me and change the way you see this guy and the way you watch this World Series going forward. Buster you've been working on this story about braves first baseman Freddie Freeman for a long time now. What drew you to his story? Well, of course, you know, he's one of the best players in baseball. MVP of the national league in 2020, he was probably the most prominent athlete to have a series case of coronavirus with his temperature spiking in July to a 104.5. But as we did this, oh my goodness, it really, in my 20 years at ESPN, it's one of the most rewarding stories that I've done, one of the most inspiring stories that I've done because they're just so many layers and to see the relationships within Freddy's family and how his life is really come full circle from the.

However, the 31 year old five time All Star is a free agent at the end of the season and our buddy John Haman tweeted yesterday quote there is still a gap in negotiations, so free agency appears strongly surprisingly possibility. That's why I said No, you said 20 I got. I'm just making sure we're good. We're good.
