What a great week, great week. Not allowed to be eating, all right? Nobody. Fred can, Fred Warner of the niners. He loaded up his plate. He might stay here for a while. My thanks to all the guests who came by, certainly the crew behind the scenes and the Giants crew as well here at Scottsdale stadium. Hannah was wonderful with the Giants. Ryan was great as well. Thank you for all the great great work. And great place to come for spring training. San Francisco Giants, Scottsdale stadium, our thanks to Scottsdale, the city for allowing us to take over the ballpark this week. We'll have what we learned, what's in store for Monday, I think we just heard that Troy Aikman is going to join us on Monday. Is that right francine? That is correct. All right, thank you fritzy. Let's see. Anything else, anybody got a game prediction that I really care to hear about? The exact number, Marv, you got a prediction. I do, but you don't care about it. I don't, but go ahead. We got to fill some time. Okay, you know what? I'm gonna go chiefs 31 eagles 20. Okay. Todd? I got 29 23 Kansas City. See no Connor. 31 24 eagles. Okay. Pauly? 21 13 eagles. 21 13 low score. Okay. Yeah, I gathered down completely wrong. So wrong. That'd be an under the over under 51. I'm going to go with the eagles winning it. 27, 23. 27 23. Jalen hurts MVP. Okay. Anybody else? Let's throw that out. Okay. All right, you can. Todd, Patrick Mahomes gets a second ring. Going out on a limb, Mark. You know what? I'm gonna go Isaiah Pacheco. Let's go Rutgers. Okay. Okay, Rutgers in the house. Yeah, Paul. Dana, how many Rutgers players have been Superman? This day in sports history. Got a couple Major League Baseball outlawed pitches that were included tampering with the ball. It used to be able to cut it, spitball, everything before 1920 and then it changed. The AFL franchise in Los Angeles was transferred to San Diego in 1961. They became the Chargers, and Mike Tyson have a rough week in Indianapolis to stay in 1996. It was on the list. I had to say it, no offense. Yeah. I remember that took over SportsCenter for weeks. Charlie Steiner, I think, was out in Indianapolis covering that. On this day, Casey Jones elected to the basketball Hall of Fame. How about that, Marvin? Iconic team? Yes. Pete maravich scored 66 points in a loss to tulane on this date in 1969. And there's no three point shot. So if you had maravich scored 66, and he was a great outside shooter, probably give him 314 points. Ten more points. He might have had 76 points in the game. Three point shot. I mean, average in 45 a game, and no three point shot. Where is he shooting from normally? I had Dale Brown of LSU. Go back and see if he could get all the shooting charts of maravich when he was in college. And he was and I wish I still had it, but he showed me the shooting charts of where maravich was taking his shot. And if you applied the college three point line, maravich would have averaged 55 again. But he would have taken more three point shots. So those are just the shots that he took two points. But Dale Brown was great in going back and looking at that. He wasn't maravich's coach's father was, but I said, do you have the shooting charts there to tell my shoe? Yes, Pauline. What the Super Bowl? Are you guys, I don't even know who's doing the halftime show. It's still Rihanna. It is. I forgot. Yeah. How come they don't do the group thing? 'cause I thought the group thing last year really crushed. As far as oh, it will be. Public oh, it is. Oh, it's Rihanna plus guests. Oh yeah. Fees. Rihanna feet. Absolutely. Okay. Yeah. Leave it Jay-Z, maybe comes out. Drake. Drake could, yeah, Eminem could, but two years in a row, people say maybe not. Oh, that's a bunch of ASAP Rocky maybe 'cause they're together, but that would be awkward. He shouldn't. I still think they should have done country. I know Chris Stapleton's doing the anthem, but just make it a collaborative effort there and have it country. They did it years ago, but it was Travis Tritt in that. Yeah, about 20 years ago, at least. I don't know, countries just so big that I would have loved to have seen that, especially out here in Arizona yes. It is a what's wrong with those three. Really? You're gonna ask that question? We don't have enough time. We don't. What did you learn today, Marv? Fritzi said, yeah. Yeah, he did early. Yeah. You set the tone early with that. Yeah, I did do that. What did you learn Todd? Justin Herbert and Trevor Lawrence say that you always have to be aware of where the chief's Chris Jones is. All right, see no Connor. I did karaoke and I was surprised by the song. Pauly, after all these years, I can't believe we pulled off doing the show at Scottsdale. Todd witted I learned. "One and done. That's it. I'm from Connecticut, and we just got tons of Connecticut niners fans, so big fan. That's it. You had one question. That's it. Oh, but the entire time, oh, he's gonna mess it up. Oh, Marvin. Okay. Well, which one is here? You did ask a question that was closed ended. You didn't say, why are the niners fans the best in the NFL? Because you were like going, hey, you know, niner fans and I had a friend who said when they went to Atlanta and then so you just say, why do the niners have the best? Besides, besides LA, okay. What was the game where you felt like, man, there's more to fans than there are. No, no. You had one shot. That's it. And I asked it. I know. But I mean, it wasn't a great question. You guys said good question. Let's bring back the niners Fred Warner who joins us on the program. Yes. Great to see you, Friends. Thank you for playing along. The pleasure to be here, seriously. Great coverage linebacker. I do all right. You're okay with that? Yeah, I do okay. Okay. Well, I was saying to debo, I thought you were underrated and he goes, no, he's not. Then I went, okay. Nationally, I think you are. Okay, do you feel it almost feels like you got a sack somebody or have interceptions to get any kind of recognition? Yeah, I mean, I probably wouldn't know the difference if I was nationally known or not, you know, because I don't pay attention to it much, but you're right. I mean, the sacks, the interceptions, those like the flat the splash plays, that's something that, you know, people kind of know players for more. I feel like down in and down out, there's nobody better. Explain to me why Travis Kelce is always open. I don't know. That's a good question. But he is. He doesn't strike me as being fast or quick. Sneaky fast, he's sneaky quick. Okay. But a big body. He's obviously played the game a long time now. He's savvy with the way that he runs his routes. You know, you got to double him. You know, that's just kind of that's just who he is. That's where he's at in his career right now where he's that good. You got to double him and the teams that don't. It's like, what are you doing, you know? I see guys put D ends on them. You know, stand up DMs, trying to put him on them and coverage. You know, you got your DBs and linebackers, it's kind of a mismatch, no matter who you put on them. Yeah, the best tight end you've faced in your careers who? Probably every day, practice George kittle. Yeah. Yeah. Is he calculated or crazy? A little bit. Is he both? Yeah, a little bit of both, yeah. People knew George Moore, like, there's more to them than just being like a psycho, you know? Everybody, you know, sees like the Joker and having fun, but like, I mean, there's a real depth to him. Like in the way that he approaches the game and, you know, he hands out these little these little cards that have sayings, sayings on them. You know, and like the real deal for sure. He's like a kid. Yeah. A lot of times. But like a kid who's had a lot of candy. It's on a wild out there. There's a lot of energy in this candy. Although deebo when he was on did say, you're the one guy in practice who doesn't take a playoff and never it's always a 100%. Man, was debo talking about me the whole interview. A little bit. He didn't want to talk about him. And he didn't want to talk about the quarterbacking situation. So understandably. I did ask him. I said, who do you want is the quarterback? And what did he say? He took a drink of water. He didn't say. You don't have any water. Who do you want is the quarterback? I'm not the one catching the passes. You know, if anyone was going to answer the question, it gotta be deebo. No, but you're on the sidelines and you're hoping that offense scores some points. Absolutely. So you're not lying about that. I want whoever is going to give us the best chance to win. Okay, did you see this from Brock purdy in be honest? During the course of the year before he took over, how did you view Brock purdy? I was a fan of his and you can ask anybody in the facility. Anybody in that building, I was a fan of his from day one. I can ask anybody, anybody. Anybody. All right. I was a fan of it. Like, Sarah, who is the receptionist, if I said, Fred Warner, she's like, wait, did you know that Fred would walk by and be talking about Brock purdy under his breath? Come on, what's up with him? But once you saw Christian McCaffrey go into the game. What did you learn? The funniest story about that. The play story about that is when the news broke that we were getting Chris McCaffrey. I'm at my house getting my haircut and my barber, he's a huge niner fan. Shout out JR. And he's cutting my hair and he gets an alert on his phone. He's like, bro, you guys just got Chris McCaffrey, I'm like, no, no, we did it, man. What are you talking about? And he's like, yeah, it's Bo look, it's only ESPN and we're both going crazy. Like, we're in the house jumping up and down, like, you know, obviously that's as big of a blockbuster trade as it comes. But when he goes into the game, Johnson goes down, Brock goes down and you see Chris McCaffrey is your quarterback. Yeah. He's got the arm ban on, and you're thinking what? Oh boy. You know. Yeah, I do. It's crazy of a situation as it just felt so unfair. Because said, ayuk was wide open on the play that brought her, yeah. So you probably would have thrown a touchdown pass. Probably. Make situation. Yeah. I mean, it's so tough to look back like and be like, oh, could have should have and what could have happened and stuff. It was honestly like the worst look that we could have had. You gonna watch the Super Bowl? Yeah, watch. Do you care? Do I care about who wins? No. Why are you watching? Because I'm a football fan, you know? I live and breathe it, you know? This is my thing, so I'm gonna watch. Yeah, see, that would be tough. But you can't root for the eagles. See, yeah, I'm not rooting for either team though. They don't give me don't get me wrong, like I dislike both teams. Obviously now because there's rich history now between obviously losing the bold teams in big time games, but yeah, no, I mean, the Super Bowl is a Super Bowl. It does hurt, you know, being here hurts. I remember I was over by the stadium yesterday and kind of seeing it all dressed up. You know, for the longest time, I was that was my mindset was I was gonna be here, you know, Super Bowl 57, February 12th, like had it written down, you know? And obviously not to be in it and stuff. He's a Fred Warner, the niners linebacker two time all pro. I have this suggestion for the Pro Bowl. That if you're going to put it on your resume. Sure. You only get the initial vote that said that you're a Pro Bowl, not an alternate. Alternate doesn't get to go on your resume. Okay. Because, you know, Tyler Huntley, who got to go to the Pro Bowl. He threw two he threw two more touchdowns than I did this year, Fred. I understand. So I think it should be just that first team that's announced, then you can put it on your resume. Everybody else is just somebody who is added to the roster competing at the Pro Bowl festivity. That's an interesting take. I think there should be something next to your name, even if you are an alternate, but there should be a distinction, right? Because right now there's no distinction of like, if you were the initial Pro Bowl or if you were an alternate, you know, there should be kind of like a distinction, you know, next to your name if you are. Do you get anything for being all

"Is the ambulance here yet? What's he driving that he ran over a school bus? Hey, he said trying to get away from Tom. Thank you. You know, they also use coconuts to make the sound of a horse's hooves during cowboy movies. I like that it's a good bit. You know what that's called? Click plot? No, the name of that art. Foley. The foley artist. Very good, very good. You know, I know, I know some words. I know. I'm trying to help your ego for the humiliating weekend that you suffer. Yes. That's the only thing. I'm sure you sure felt humiliated sitting in your comfortable chair with your fire going and my doggies. I don't know. With San Francisco had a chance, had they had their I think so? Yeah, absolutely. San Francisco guy had how many quarterbacks injured? I mean, they had a chance with their third string, really? And Fred Warner injured the whole world linebacker in never mind. No, I have a question. It's like talking to a dog. But they have during the week, could they have picked a new player? Are they allowed to add to the roster toward the end? I don't think so. I think the playoff rosters are set by certain date. Yeah. That seems unfair if you've got, here we go again with what's fair and what's not. No, maybe if you've got your all the stadium should have roofs on them, that will make it fair. Make it a better television. How about this? How about they shouldn't have continued the game? Because the San Francisco was quarterback. No, no, no, I'm just saying. Play it. Wouldn't it be more fantasy? You can get healthy. If you're missing three key players. Yes, Tom, you're right. That's a great idea. I don't know when the NFL is going to hundred bucks that happens by next season.

The Rich Eisen Show

"8 four four two O four rich is the number to dial on the program. Juju Smith Schuster of the Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC championship game hosting it against the Cincinnati Bengals will join us shortly, but right now joining us on the phone line is one of our favorites. All pro linebacker for the San Francisco forty-niners getting set to head to Philadelphia for another NFC championship game, second in a row for this guy in the San Francisco forty-niners, Fred Warner, back here on the rich eisen show, how are you doing Fred? I'm doing great, ray. Thanks for having me on. I am thrilled to have you on this program. Let's hit right now. What's going through your mind as you get ready for another NFC championship game back to back for you? Yeah, I mean, Philly, Philly, Philly's all in my mind right now just because that's who it's all about this week and there's such an amazing team and their offense is so good in so many areas that it's going to take a lot of film study and trying to find where we can find new possibly find one other weaknesses. But it's a really good football team and we're obviously going to be extremely prepared if we want to sign it. Well, I guess if you don't mind, I'd like to turn the page back before we turn the page forward. And in terms of turning the page back, let's talk about the Dallas game we just witnessed. Walk me through the interception you got and how you wound up being where you were and maybe what you saw on film prior to the game led you to picking that one off Fred. Yeah, well they had just ran that same formation same play or at least the same route by CDA in that same area of the field. I think either the series before or maybe a couple of series before that. And I played them too high. I was on top of them and you kind of just sat down and decked through it to and for like a 6 yard gain. So on that next time I saw the same information, I kind of sat on them a little more. He gave me a kind of gave me almost like a juke to try to work away from my leverage and I guess him and dak didn't know that I had a nickel Jimmy ward obviously sitting outside of me or if he did do that. So when he did Jimmy made a heck of a play being there, squatting on the route and that was his interception. You know, he jumped the route and the ball just happened to pop up, pop up from him and I was in pursuit right there ready to take it. So do you thank Jimmy afterwards? Of course. Oh yeah. Yeah, that was the outcome. Everybody told me what grade would play I made, but I went to him. I'm like, Jim, that's all you. That's a heck of a play about you. And so I guess what I'm also driving at here is what you saw on film against Dallas because that's a national conversation now about them winding up short, not getting to where they wanted to go so on and so forth. What did you see on film that you were in fact able to exploit? In this divisional playoff game, from dak and Dallas, Fred. Yeah, I mean, we knew we knew that obviously they were a great offense. They had a huge performance against the bucks. Dak was coming off his best game of the season and something that was interesting to me. I mean, I watched film all week long. We knew that they had some dynamic player Tony Pollard and Zeke in the backfield of the great duo and then obviously CD and don't show having such a good season. So we knew we had our hands full, but there was a stat I saw prior to the game where it said the deck hadn't had two back to back games without an interception, I think it was and since 2019, which was all like, oh, it's incredible stat. But that doesn't really mean that he's necessarily going to give you the ball. You got to go take it. But we knew we had to make his life hard to try and get him to make some choice decisions out there and I think obviously we needed to be done. Fred Warner here on the rich eisen show. Last time you were on, was about two months ago when this kid named Brock purdy was just starting and you're like, I think he's got it. We've seen him. We think he can pull it off. We think he can do it, and now here you are heading to the NFC championship game. Do you have a moment in the last 6 weeks where your initial thought was confirmed to you, either in practice or in a game? Fred? I mean, yeah, most definitely, I think, yeah, you mentioned us being on me being on the show and I was talking about talking that through. I think that was right after the dolphins game when he had to come in with a game for us. Against a great football team who was really hot at the time. And I think what everybody wanted to see was okay, how's he going to do when a team comes in like the Tampa was made Buccaneers going head to head against Tom Brady and Brady being undefeated against rookie quarterbacks. So I think that was the moment that everybody kind of knew like, okay, he can do it. He can hold his own. And be the guy and he's been that all along. And he's just been I can't talk enough about the poise and how incredible of, I mean, just how incredible the PC's been for us because he had to obviously prove that he capable of leading us to where we are now. And he's done that and it's like the story that you can't you can't draw it up any better. And people can't talk about it enough. I think obviously if you were going to nitpick the way he plays and different business scenarios throughout games about all this other stuff, he's done exactly what he needed to do. We're just take care of the football. That's the first and foremost what you got to do in January. You've got to be able to run the football. You got to take care of it and you need quite a defense. And so as long as we have all those, we'll be just fine. And then there's another youngster that I don't think gets nearly as much attention. He's behind you. Talk to me about who fungo. Will you please serve and what he does and how free he plays and how much he's Manning the fort behind you, Fred, would you mind? Yeah, I mean, I don't know, I don't know if a lot of those guys in the back end get a lot of credit. Huff has had just an incredible season in year two at the beginning of the year. People knew that he was a good player based off the things they had seen from him, the prior season, even though he wasn't a starter. When he'd come in, he'd make kind of the splash plays and you see the style that he played with, which was promising, but then he comes into this season just ready to go. He took a hold of being the starter from day one and if you would have told me that he would have been a first team all pro a pro bowler and one of our best players on our defense and on our team, that's incredible to do in your second year. If he's just, he's got a knock for the football, he's always around it. The way he tons of blitzes is better than anybody I've ever seen. And just plays with his hair on fire, man. I think he's one of the best. I think the whole secondary is playing really well, really good football playing playing together. And that's what we're going to need. Fred Warner, all pro linebacker of the San Francisco forty-niners getting set to head to Philadelphia for the NFC championship game here on the rich eisen show and Fred, I don't take for granted that you call in during a very big week, take some time out of your prep. To call into this show. So I'm going to help you prepare for the eagles. They have this quarterback named Jalen hurts. I'd keep an eye out for him. I keep an eye on him. He's elusive. He could throw it too. I don't know if you're aware of that. If you've seen that on film, so you're welcome. Are you taking notes? Are you taking notes right now? I didn't tell you to grab a pen first. I was already taking those promises. Come on now. Okay, for a guy, just want to, you know, I'm trying to help.

Let's go. I've got also on this show a top 5 list, top 5 storylines coming out of divisional playoff week, and I did this last week on this day. Since this was the day after the Monday Night Football game between the cowboys and the Buccaneers top 5 storylines to come out of super wild card weekend, number two on the list is what is Tom do now? Tom Brady. And we actually have a we actually have an update on that. Now, Sean mcvay, as we all know, in between, I believe, end of regular season and super wild card weekend, came out of the end of the regular season with he needs to take some time and figure out if he still wants to be coach of the Los Angeles Rams. We know Aaron Rodgers said he needs to take some time and figure out what his future is, even though the contract screams, he's playing and also screams that he's playing for Green Bay. But one never knows. He went on McAfee show last week leading into divisional playoff weekend says he's still thinking about it. Sean mcvay as we all know took all of about 72 hours to let the rams know I'm staying. Everybody has their different amount of time that they need. Well, Tom Brady has updated us on his timeline. On his own podcast with Jim gray, let's go. And Brady's Brady's answer was succinct. He gave us quite the answer through Jim gray taking one on the chin for all of us in the NFL media wondering the answer to the question about his timeline here it is. Tom, you're leaving everybody guessing and you've said you'll take your time. Do you have any type of a timetable as to what you might want to do regarding your football career? Jim, if I knew what I was gonna do, I'd have already done it. Okay, I'm taking a day at a time. I sent your antagonized by the question. You're scratching. It's only the question that everybody wants to hear. You're scratchy. Scratchy. I appreciate your asking. Thank you. Is it over? My God. Can I come up from them? I'm sorry. That whole. That was coming. Situation. All righty. Two things. Don't think he really appreciated the question. I'm picking something up. Not a sincere I appreciate the question. I appreciate the question though. Yeah. Boy? Since when did Tom Brady turn it to Chad Kirk's? He didn't know that was coming? Right? By the way, I just gave you an old school Jim gray reference. Chad Curtis? Yeah. He rose? What happened? And secondly, this leads it. We're dusting this off. We did this. We did this all last off season. Somebody nailed it. When Brady retired and then came back, that would be you, Chris brockman. So we're bringing it back. Here on this edition of the rich eisen show. In between divisional and championship weekend, hit it, hit

"Defense, we have little conversations every week. Just to keep the team and where it needs to be and he's such a great leader for us, like the way that he prepares and you talk about just a guy and that's Jim. So it's going to hurt losing him, but my heart goes out to him and we'll be talking to him. Yeah, he must be gutted, Fred. You know what I mean? What a year for him too. I mean, for the way everything worked out last year and then it seemed like, you know, the whole story, I don't need to run through it with Lance and him and the fact that you were and you are in position to win the Super Bowl. He's got a gut him. I know it's a next man up mentality too, and I guess I'll circle back one last time. Every 49er fan I know is like, okay, I believe in the system, I believe in this team, but I don't know this kid. And he had to have been drafted last for a reason. I'm serious. I'm being honest with what's being said. And I am talking to somebody who's in the room and has so much to do with why the niners are in position to win in you, Fred. So I just will give you the floor. One last time on your thoughts on winning a Super Bowl this year. Yeah, look, I mean, it's something that throughout the entire season, it's always a work in progress and there are so many ups and downs throughout the season. And we are in the midst of the biggest storm that you could possibly go through, losing your starting quarterback. We've launched our starting quarterback twice this season, right? And I think in my mind, I always say, never say never. You know, I think it's such an unlikely story to have mystery relevant come in and lead to not lead the niners to a Super Bowl, right? And I think that's what everybody's going to write us off on. And that's fine. That's what everybody wants the narrative to be. I'm completely fine with that. I'm so completely laser focused on. Just like I know the team is on just taking this thing one week at a time. We our goal ultimately is a Super Bowl. You're absolutely right. We want to win that Super Bowl so badly. But we understand that this league is all about taking things one week at a time. And that's what we've been doing. That's why we won 5 straight is not because we're like, oh, we have the dolphins in a couple of weeks. So we're going to be playing Tom Brady and it's just one just taking one step. One step at the time. And that's how we're going to continue to take this thing. And then we'll see what happens when we look up at the end of this thing. But yeah, it's going to be fun. Fred, thanks for the time. I really love chatting with you and greatly appreciate it day after a big win and with so much going on with your team. Just giving us the scoop. And good luck to you, have a great holiday season. If we don't connect before. You got it. I appreciate you. Right back at you. At Fred underscore Warner on Twitter, follow him, check him out. And obviously check out the forty-niners. As they move on. Is it possible? That by the end of February, you'll be talking about Joe Montana, Steve Young. And Brock purdy. No. I would say it's more likely the next day. Excuse me? No. The question was is it possible that by the middle of February, we're talking about Joe Montana? Steve Young. And Brock purdy. Is that more possible? As what? Joe Namath and Mike white? Absolutely, it's more possible than Joe Namath. Likewise. Why? Because the jets haven't done it together as a unit. Mike white's better than Brock purdy, though. The jets haven't done it together as a unit, and we don't know that that's the case right now. Mike white has more experience in showing us what he can do and has done it. If there was a 24/7 360 five split screen, arguing here, arguing there, a nonstop flurry of shows where people call in, longtime listeners, first time callers on television and radio in 1999 after. Trent Greene went down. What would the conversation be? You know what I'm saying? That's why I'm saying the running back from Penn State is the Ramsey. I'm saying, you know what I'm saying? I'm saying, that was at least a preseason. I'm saying you never know and the jets as much as I adore them, and I enjoying watching Mike white. And I'm enjoying believing in them. And I'm enjoying seeing more wins and losses and fewer kicks in the nards from the football gods. I am enjoying it through the rafters. You are putting it directly to me, Fred Warner, Nick Bosa, George kittle, deebo Samuel, Trent Williams, Brandon ayuk. I'm just naming a handful of guys that have been through it all together. Last year, this year, some of them most of them I just mentioned, several years ago, not that too long ago against the chiefs. So yeah, I'm saying Montana young purdy is more possible than name it white, yeah? I'm saying that. This is like another Seinfeld Ruth Gehrig mantle Costanza. I don't know if purdy is the I think he's got a little bit more on the ball than Costanza. He's not living with his parents, is he? Good question. We don't know. We don't know. We know nothing about Brock per yam. Yeah, I know. Nobody knows anything. Except that he came in off the bench and looked like he was ready to go against the Miami Dolphins all along. He was prepared and ready to roll and all you're seeing is how good he looked in the preseason, but and how he looked in training camp, but it was still a better option for them to make sure Jimmy Jean didn't walk out the building. And still have purdy around next week. I mean, it's kind of, I won't say it's easy, but he came in had the adrenaline. We're going to see how he has to prepare for the week and they have a chance to game plan for the next game. And how about this? How about the football gods are just always winking at us with crazy stuff?

"Scheme itself, but when you were preparing for this scene and playing against it, did a lot of it feel like your own team that you were going against? Yes, most definitely, you know, because obviously Mike was a huge part of what we did offensively when he was here. You know, he brought in guys that were more familiar with the system. They have their own pullback that they used in all types of ways in the backfield and all the different personnel sets and all the jet motions to try to get dried and moving in different directions. So, you know, it was very similar to playing against our offense. And two wasn't playing at such a high level and the way that he's been delivering football. You know, so we knew that we had to make sure that we were on top of it. Fred Warner here on the rich eisen show. And then let's just if you don't mind dive a little bit more into the X's and O's, how much of the week of preparation was on knowing mcdaniel from, obviously, when he was maybe walking the halls there, down from the defensive room, but obviously in the offensive side, how much of it was like anticipating what he might know about you and your countering. Can you take us inside the preparation going against an opponent coached by someone that knows you and you know yourself? Yeah, I mean, I think that's probably a better question to be asking the defense coordinator and assistant coaches in terms of how they game plan for the week. I know, I know because of the familiarity there. We wanted to show him different looks or we wanted to kind of keep him off too. And throughout the game and so there were a couple of different nuances that we had to implement. But for the most part, it was just honestly running our stuff and being on top of it. We knew that they loved to attack the middle of the field. So the reason that the game went on, we had to make sure that we kept our debts, you know, especially at the second level because his strength is getting that ball right over the second level in those windows right over the middle. So our mentality of the entire game was passed first, run second. If they were if they were going to run the ball, we were going to come down late and stop them. That wasn't that wasn't our priority. I priority was keeping everything in front of us. And obviously you did your former defensive coordinator Robert sala a favor beating the dolphins too. Fred, you did another. You did him a solid by taking care of that. How on the table for D'amico range D.C.? Tell me about him. What I should know. Oh man, I mean, I feel like I talk about him every week. At this point, there's not much else that left the state. You know, he ranks in first and almost every best category. And he's done this for back to back years of having a top 5 defense and I think the thing that if I had to sell him as a head coach to a team, the number one thing that you want at that position is a leader of men and I think he's a complete leader of men in the way that he is able to stand in front of us and just speak to us on a week to week basis and keep us motivated, keep us into it and developing a game plan every week that allows us to play free to play fast and not have any gray area. We know exactly what needs to get done in the style of play that we play with every week, not everybody can do that and I think that all starts with him and he's fantastic. Before I let you go, Fred Warner, have you spoken to Jimmy Garoppolo since yesterday? No, not yet. I know he's not the quickest to respond to texts. What do you mean? What do you mean? What do you mean? I know it's probably the first that people are to this, but no, I mean, my heart goes out to Jim, man. That's my guy. I love him. Love him to death. And him being a quarterback of the offense, maybe

"The position of linebacker on arguably the best defense in the National Football League after they beat the Miami Dolphins and that high flying offense at home yesterday, the leading the NFC west leading San Francisco forty-niners Pro Bowl linebacker Fred Warner here on the Mercedes Benz vans phone line. How are you doing, Fred? Doing great, it's a great thing for having me on. Thanks for doing this. Obviously, there's so much happening with your team. First and first up for you is what do you say to the fan base that is particularly nervous about starting a kid who is so called mister irrelevant in the draft and Brock purdy? What do you say to the fans who might be nervous about your Super Bowl chances being on the line with him, Fred? Yeah, I mean, yesterday, I was asked a couple of questions about him and I've seen like the part of me saying that he's practiced against the best defense in the league the last whatever amount of weeks. You know, and I wholeheartedly believe that, I think, obviously, it is just practice, you know, games, especially the time of the year and practice are a lot different, but I've been, I've been the biggest. I feel like I have a good eye for our guys who are really good football players, you know, who have the and it's hard to say like what the it factor is, but I think he has a, you know, I've seen, I see the way he goes about his work the way he prepares and I have full confidence brought birdie. I think he's going to do a great job. So what have you seen in practice that you saw in the game and go, okay, so I saw that in practice against us, and now he could do it against the Miami Dolphins. You got it, for instance, on that Fred? Well, yeah, I mean yesterday. In the midst of battle, I got so focused on what we got going on defensively that is hard for me to keep track of what's going on on that side of the ball. I'm like either looking at an iPad or talking to the coaches fighting it to watch a whole lot of them. You know, he did make some huge third down throws with pressure in his face. I saw, which is a big time on his end, but in practice, just the savvy for a rookie who has been has been really cool to see him doing the nola passes that you see like Patrick Mahomes and these guys doing Matt Stafford. He's doing those type of things and I'm like, how are you? How are you, how are you doing that as a rookie? You know, like that's the type of stuff that he does. So, you know, I think as he goes, he's going to continue to get more comfortable and more confident with game plan every week. And so he'll be just fine. Right, and I know clearly you're an all pro linebacker, Fred, and a lead pipe wielding profession when it comes to that. So you know what pressure feels like and obviously you want to be the best not only your position, but the leader of a unit that is considered the best in the NFL, as you pointed out. But I would imagine this does place more of the responsibility of getting past the winning finish line on your side of the football, Fred, would you agree with that? Well, I mean, I feel like internally like for our on our side of the ball, like we already hold a lot of we take a lot of pride in making sure that we hold the teams to do amount of points as possible to try to help the team win games like just because we have a new quarterback in. That doesn't change our standard. That doesn't change the way we play to play 9 or football on our side of the ball. I think as long as we keep doing what we're doing and we're going to be just fine. It's not something that we have to go out of our way to do something completely different. You know, the recipe for us winning games as a team has been to protect the football to play penalty free football and continuing to play at the standard that has been developed here. So I think as long as we continue to do that, then we'll get the result that we want. And I know I'm asking you a question that I already know the answer to, but I'll ask it anyway. You think you can win a Super Bowl with Brock purdy a quarterback Fred Warner. Yeah, yes, I do. Fred Warner, the San Francisco forty-niners here on the rich eisen show. Where do the dolphins rank in terms of offenses you've defensed this year, Fred? Probably number one, you know, they were the number one explosive offense in the league and then you head out there for the first step of the game and they torture you for 75 80 yard explosive for a touchdown on the first play of the game. I remember coming off the sideline and I will say like a smile on my face I'm laughing. I'm like, man, what are the odds? Like, of course, of course, all we've heard about all week is how I expose to the offenses and they go out and they score touch on like that on the first place. So I kind of laugh to myself. We looked at the play and saw the breakdown in coverage and were able to correct it. And they'll have a moment that early in the game, you realize that there's so much football left to play in the game that you're not going to you're not going to start to melt down after one the first play of the game, you know. So we looked at it for what it was and corrected it and then we're able to move on from it. And then obviously we've been talking all year long in the paparazzi about Mike mcdaniel and what he's brought from San Francisco and not just Raheem mostert and Jeff Wilson, but the

"Is the number to dial here on the program. We've got Bruce Feldman of Fox Sports in the athletic coming up an hour number three of this show. We also have Fred Warner of the San Francisco forty-niners in about 20 minutes time. I guess he would be a charter member of the Brock purdy fan club. One would say. And so the forty-niners, there were 5 games on Sunday, 5 in which both teams had playoff spots. Not already secured, nobody's had anything already secured just yet. There's playoff clinching scenarios to come and week 14, neither the eagles nor the Vikings got the results to go along with their win to clinch the playoff spot in week 13. But there were 5 teams that were in playoff positioning, entering week 13 to play against each other in week 13, jets Vikings, Vikings took that one as the jets couldn't couldn't get in the end zone from the one yard line, and then from the red zone, and otherwise they could have won that football game. All I know is that it's Mike's white. Mike white's gig to lose right now. We'll discuss that a little bit more. The Vikings get their tenth win. Another game is Miami San Francisco. San Francisco gets that win, but loses their quarterback. Another win in a game like that goes to the Philadelphia Eagles beating the Tennessee Titans who are, I guess, in the same boat as Tom Brady and the Buccaneers, lucky to be playing in the south in their conference because that division could be lost with the record they would have in other divisions. 7 and 5 does not lead any other division in the National Football League with the exception of the NFC south. And another one of those games, Cincinnati, and Kansas City. What a huge game that was for the Bengals and borough. That's how I started the show. And another one of those games Washington and the Giants wound up being a time. Wound up being a tie. Of course. I was stunned that riverboat Ron didn't go for two at the end of the game. At the end of regulation. I was surprised of all the punting and overtime. Somebody go for it and try to win this thing. Well, the Giants teed it up to try and win it. And then didn't get the field goal. My father giants will take the tie. That's a 58 yard of the tie actually helps the Giants the most. Of course. Right. They're sitting a half game in front of the commanders only issue for them is, while the commanders are on a biweek, they take on the eagles for the first of two times. And then after that game, the commanders come off there by and host the Giants. Giants could be out soon. I don't know, man. Every time you think they're out, they just win a game where you're wondering how the hell they win that game. Well, they were 7 and two, remember. I know. You know, they're O2 and one in the last three years. It's Odell Beckham visits the cowboys today coming off of their win against the colts. 50 burger. It was ridiculous. 50. 8 four four two O four rich number to Donald overreaction Monday coming up shortly. Let's take tears on Iowa's phone call. What's up tours? First in first up, bless you for always calling in. What's going on, sir? Man, rich. It was tough to watch Jimmy G go down yesterday, man. That was pretty hard to watch. I'm with you. I'm with you. It's something where the niners are down a quarterback number three and this is either going to be one of those we look back on it and what a damn shame it was or we look back on it and there's going to be NFL films documentaries on this and basically is going to tell Mick folds to hold his beer, you know what I mean? Like that's possibly in the cards too because they're that good. To one otherwise. A 100%, that defense is flying all over the place. Fred Warner is an absolute sats and like watching him play is so much fun. And I feel lucky as a forty-niners fan to have had Patrick Willis and Navarro Bowman and now Fred Warner like lifetime changing linebackers. I feel like we've just lucked out in that category. Wow. Thanks for the call tears. Oh, greatly appreciate it. I just ask you this before I get to you brockman overreaction Monday and so much more. What do I do with this? What am I supposed to do with this? Jimmy Garoppolo goes down. I tell Susie who's in the other room, Jimmy Garoppolo just went down. And it looks really bad. He gets, you know, he got hurt. And she goes, that's terrible, pause. He didn't hurt his face, did he? What are you supposed to do with that information and reaction? Chris. I know you're not watching white lotus. Not yet. Is that something that would be difficult to well, just don't go full Ethan. Okay. You know, if you're watching, you understand. Okay. I think you just kind of go, yeah, yeah, no, not his face. No, it was his foot. Which is fought. Reassure his face. His face is totally fine. Yes. That's what I did. I went to my default, which is always provide Susie with reassurance. Do you remember the Seinfeld or was Elaine dating Dan Cortez remember that back in the day? And he fell off the mountain 'cause he was hiking with their mountain climbing with George and Elaine was like, how's his face? Is his face okay? Right, 'cause he was just like Tony. Hey, he had the perfect face. Right. Opposite of that situation. Jimmy Jean face is fine. Very good. Yeah. That's what

"So maybe you can help with this TJ. Try to do my best. As you know, here in Los Angeles, California. Lakers fans lost their minds. Am I referring to what happened with the Lakers season? No, I'm not for anything. Am I referring to Russell Westbrook being on the hook for 40 something million bucks? No, come on, I'm not referring to that. Am I referring to the warriors doing what they did? Lakers fans freaking out about that. No. I'm referring to the fact that the Lakers announced that Staples Staples Center is becoming crypto dot com. And people around here thought that their entire Laker fandom was wiped out. Was wiped out. All those amazing Kobe shack years. Every shot. Every shot Robert Ori made. Gone. That comeback against the blazers for the ages, right? The Kobe to Shaq hoop. Over. Phil Jackson? To use the phrase like The Godfather? Like it never existed. Like severance, just poof, gone. Right. Like severance. Gone. I stepping over loop. No, that was different. That was different. I don't know, I'm just saying all the moments. Steal a fans have lost their minds. Yes. Now look, I understand that Heinz field. And that Heinz ketchup is a local business. And when they built their new stadium right on the confluence, that Heinz had a deal with the Steelers that made sense. The local product, a local business, putting their name, but it was a 20 year deal. It's amazing. 2001. It's the deals up. Right. For about like 40, something $1 million. But here's the deal. The Heinz in the 20 year deal. They paid $57 million. They even branded how much money they gave. Well done. 57, you know? Well done. Varieties of millions. And so that's 2.8 and a half $1 million a year. So the Steelers are open for business. It's understandable, right? You have businesses business. So they struck a deal with a shirt. What? God bless you. They struck a deal with accuracy. And it's a company based out of Michigan. State of Michigan. Oh, yeah. And they said they told the Steelers, you know what we've got for you? We've got a 150 to $300 million. Wait a second. Heinz, what? And thus today? The ketchup bottles, the famed ketchup bottles. The famed ketchup bottles and Pittsburgh PA being removed and this video from that we've seen on Twitter that's going to be all over Pittsburgh fan pages and all over the news. It's like the steeler fans are having their hearts ripped out. It's like bettis never won going off into the sunset. It's like it's like santonio towns never toe tap the end zone. It's like Roethlisberger didn't make that tackle when you spun around and it's like Tomlin isn't one of the best coaches in the history of their franchise. It's like it's as if they can't even figure out which way is up anymore as a steeler fan. And all I will say is this. I understand it's emotional that this is how big is that ketchup bottle? It's huge. And del twofold is asking the same question as my 13 year old Xander. Is there actually catch up? Your kids love ketchup so much. Oh my God. Taylor not so much, which is great. That's good for her. Good for her. I will just say this. I just want to say this to my steeler fan friends out there. Because you know, your best interest in mind all the time. Yes. I'm going to pull a coach Dale here. And just measure the rim to the floor. Shit would get in the pool. Measure the rim to the floor, measure let's just use it, I guess. Measure the sideline to sideline, right? Measure the top of the stadium to the lower part of the stadium. Measure it all out. On a bottle, leave it. It's the same stadium. It's the same field. It's the same stadium. It's the same building. The memories still happened. You still have Heinz war. Okay? And half the people around the world thought you named the building after Heinz war until they saw the spelling and had a bottle of ketchup. It's not aquis reward. He didn't change his name. It's not aqua reward. It's the same building. Folks. And all the memories that you had in the old state, that one I understand, they took a wrecking ball to that place. They blew it up. It's still the same stadium. Yeah, but it's harder to say though. Accurate, that's the issue. Yeah, because you're a Pittsburgh, you're like, hey, I'm going to go down behind this field and now you're going to say I'm going to go down that aqua shirt in that aqua shirt. It's too many syllables. For Pittsburgh fans. No. I was trying to say that. No one back or sure in that. Well yeah, that's gone. Right. The place where all the memories happened and Franco made the catch. No, that's true. Exactly. They destroyed it exactly. It's done. I used to work on this. And I understand the problem is again that Heinz is a local business. And you also know what it is. You could put a ketchup bottle up there. Yep. You pour the ketchup out. That's really just a quick tip when you open a new bottle of Heinz. You tap the 57 with the base of your hand. It

"Show chair. After a couple of weeks of walkabout and three, three of my friends back in studio were all of us together. Chris brockman and Mike deltoids. It's so good to see you. Our number two of the show, TJ Jefferson. Good to see you, sir. It's good to be seen. I bet. Yeah. Better than the alternative. Did you think I'd come back? No. There's the open championship. Victory and baseballs break here in Los Angeles. All-Star Game tomorrow night, home run Derby tonight. A couple of NFL training camps opening today. Rookies. For the pills and for the Raiders. Let's talk about it. But the burning question that I have for you is did you guys think I'd come back from my vacation fat? Because I've lost weight. I don't know if you've noticed. Did you notice? Doesn't matter with you, people. It's been so long since I've seen you. I kind of forgot. Oh my God. That's just ridiculous. The forty-niners are about to call them, by the way. The thing is, eating the food over there, which we know to see, we ate a lot of food. Yeah. It's also healthy and clean, 'cause it's all fresh. It is that. And you don't snack during the day. The only thing you think about for food when you're over in Italy is when you're having breakfast, what's for lunch? When you're having lunch, what's for dinner? And then when you're having dinner, where are we eating tomorrow? That's basically the way it goes. I'm sure you don't. Oh, well, there's dolce. Yeah. I don't have to get bad enough. I had to dolce. The tiramisu is a spectacular. I mean, wherever you go. But I just want to make sure that I did not think you were going to be fat now. I thought you always kind of looked the same. Okay. Is that a compliment? That's a comment. Thank you so much. I appreciate that. We're back here on the rich eisen show. And joining us back here on the program. I don't know if you saw this. There was a USA Today to write up top ten linebackers in the national football. We were doing this last week too. He was rated one. Rated number one right there in the middle of the San Francisco forty-niners defense getting set to get back out there after coming up just so short of the Super Bowl last year to remarkable run the niners had last year. Joining us on the Mercedes Benz van's phone line is the terrific Fred Warner. How are you doing, Fred? Man, I'm doing outstanding rich. I'm pretty sure you have me on. Did you have, did you see that you were named the top line recorder in the NFL by USA Today? Did you see that one? I saw that one. No, I didn't see that. I didn't. I know. This time of year, they love to come out with lists like that. Fred, I don't know how you are. We're bored. We can't wait for football to get back. I mean, right, right. How are you feeling right now? I mean, you're getting ready at the grind is about to hit, correct? San Francisco, you report to training camp on the 26th of July. If I'm not right, yeah, I'll mention, I'll mention man. You know, like you said, we're all ready. We're all ready to get this show on the road and get back to playing football again. The greatest, the greatest sport in the world. And so just excited to get going again and get back to work. And so let's get into the getting into work, Fred Warner. I'm sure you've heard the narrative. If not, I'll just repeat it. Trey Lance is not ready. Some people believe to take this team to where it needs to go to where Jimmy Garoppolo has taken it to where Jimmy Garoppolo could still take it. But the niners are going to turn to him and he's not potentially ready for it. What can you tell me on that front Fred Warner? Yeah, I mean, I've spoken about Trey a lot. And I know this off season has been that's kind of been like you mentioned the narrative of everybody's asking and always Trey ready. And it's going to be the guy and all these other questions. And I've continued to say, man, just how much I've admired the way Trey has taken on just all the criticism, all the, I guess you could say like the pressure that people are trying to put on him, he's been super professional about it, especially with how young he is. Very mature for his age. And so just the things that you see from him in the small, the small things that everybody else outside of the building feeds from him. I mean, that should give you a good sense of like the maturity for such a young player and if given the range, like the way that he would handle it, you know, and so I can continue to sit here and tell you how great of a person and player that he is. I've already spoken on that. But whatever it may be, I know that he is for sure if given the range that he's ready for it. He's very professional and mature and ready for whatever given. Well, again, I don't want to you to tell any tales out of school, of course you want to. But has he not been given the reins is it not apparent to everybody there that he is going to be your week one starter in Chicago right now, Fred? You know, yeah, I mean, Kyle calls the brands of the operation. I let him handle all that kind of stuff. You know, my job as the middle linebacker for our defense is to make sure that I'm ready to go. And at the top of my game for this side of the bowl and let them handle out that side and I know it's a big operation to operate as a team and so I'm just making sure I'm doing my part in the puzzle. And so the little things that you mentioned moments ago, can you give me an example of a little thing that Lance has done and you're like, okay, that's a QB in the NFL that I know of. What do you think? Yeah, I mean, just doing the little things right, you know, working hard, keeping his head down staying humble, not letting the outside criticism get to him. I haven't seen him mention it one time. And the times I've seen him on having to approach the media and the way that he goes about that and letting them know that that's not something that he's worried about.

"There's Fred Warner afterwards, saying it's tough to see Jason Brett, especially after all the work he's done in the injuries he's had in the past. Go down. Good news is the 49 dropped 41 17 They hold on 43 33 a lot of good to talk about, But obviously, after major injury like that, That's we're going to start Jason Britain in the secondary. Looks like he's out for the year with an A C L. Let's talk to the aforementioned Donte Whitner at 90. Wittner. Make sure you follow a great job with the pre and post with Joe and the crew yesterday, and he joins us courtesy of the magazine. Hi, Dante. How are you? Are you guys doing Well, we're kind of torn, right? I mean, you get the win, but obviously you're feeling bad for Verrett. Yeah, You feel extremely bad. Eveready fall back in so many devastating injuries, Patella tendon, Achilles, multiple HCL and arguably was the best defender during training camp. You know, so he was looking forward to, you know, showing the world that you know he was the top five corner in the league and to see him go down for the nine contact injury. Basically, you know exactly depth. It's devastating and heartbreaking. Yeah, Without question. We'll figure out what the football team does, but just speak to Jason and I saw you know, after the game coming out on crutches, and he was still welling up. He stopped and And gave me a hug and watching this guy play, too. When he was a young player with the San Diego Chargers in 2015 was a pro ball player. You you listed all the different injuries is terrible. Injuries in the eight finally got healthy last year, and he played great. But because of the pandemic, the salary cap went down. He wound up signing a one year deal. For $5.5 million. Not a camp is going to go up to over two. Oh, eight. I mean, just from a financial standpoint. Uh, he lost a lot of money yesterday. Nancy, We're talking. Maybe 25 30 $35 million, he would have got in a contract if he played. This year, the way he played last year. We did, and they're so unpredictable as to what will happen when an injury would happen. And that's why players talk about getting paid and locking up a guaranteed money. That's why you're here so often. And last year was a buyer's market ownership. Didn't want to pay the players. You know they didn't make a lot of money. They lost a lot of money with the pandemic, so it was just bad timing and you hate the theaters happen to guys. You understand what he's going through. I understand what he's going through, but it doesn't make it any easier. Dante. Witness. Join us the 40 Niners Hold on in Detroit yesterday. 41 33 bracing for the bad news officially on Jason Verrett in the knee. So from a football perspective, how badly does this hurt? Tremendously. Yeah. Um, you know, they were relying on him to play a lot of top receivers, and they have a lot in their division. He was the number one corner. Playing basically like a top up corner in the league. Now you have to figure out what you're going to do. And they were already seeing at the cornerback position when the season started yesterday. So now you have some guys on the street. You have, uh, our old friend Richard Sherman out there. Well, I can guarantee you that he's in the best shape that he's probably ever been in. And he wants the opportunity to prove that he's still the top point in his league, so I'll go on record, saying that even though Richard Herman is not a hurricane To the top 10 corn in the league, especially in this system that he knows like the back of his hand. That's easy fit. Yes, and the 40. Niners do talk to him on a regular basis. John legend Adam Peters and Kyle even acknowledged it. He's got a little bit of a legal situation he's going to have to get through. And that probably wouldn't be a uh, addition you can make until October, but I hear you, but let's just start with the with the in House candidates. And I want to start with Josh Norman. Um, because you played with him, You know, coming off his best year and Carolina when he was a first team all pro. He got the franchise tag, and then he didn't sign it right away. And Marty Hurney and Carolina got pissed rescinded it. He wound up signing a lucrative deal to go to Washington. And you were there with them for their 2016 years. I've always thought he was more of his own corner. Kind of like Richard Sherman, which is not a slide of the guy, but I think he's more of a A guy who wants to play a little bit off kind of soft and off. Is that an accurate breakdown of Josh Norman? And what do you think about his game right now? Don t accurate depiction of Josh Norman, you know, But as we get older, we lose a little bit. You know, even though we don't want to admit it. And it takes a lot of communication with your teammates. Just come in, implement somebody after a week of practice. That much more communication that goes on out there than just putting a guy out there and say, Hey, play covered three plates number four. All right. What about when he have bunch formations? What about when they motion it shift? What about what we're playing man to man to get her to man Fact what's the communication there? It takes a while to develop back chemistry. And it takes a while for Josh Norman Norman to learn a type of terminology and what means what and what coverage and zone blitz and man It's so much to learn, Um, maybe five duty when they go to a nickel packages give him certain coverages to work on, but for the asked them to come in after two weeks. And these are number one corner and base nickel dime. I don't know if you can do it. Dante, the young guys De'andre Lynn or played yesterday and he didn't get tested out a whole lot. But I would imagine that in the short term, if if we can assume Mosul would come back against Philly, would you think Lynn or would be on the other side? And how would you feel about that? The other thing. It would be liner will be Dontae Johnson at the moment was inspired duty from Josh Norman that he gets up to speed. Eleanor. I think he has five targets you only gave of one. That's what I saw in pro football focus. What tells me that you know the game wasn't too big for them. But when you go into a game early in the week, the coaching staff notice you're going to be out there that can prepare for you. They can attack your weaknesses. They noticed a young guy. And that's when he will get tested. So you know we'll see how it goes moving forward. But, yeah, I would say Dontae Johnson older nor will be the opposite Emanuel mostly. All right early in the game when the 40 nine's were rolling. Still, the lion's got after them as far as running the football. Jamal Williams and DeAndre Swift had some big runs in the game. And now going to Philadelphia. Jalen hurts. Just live in the run game as a quarterback, and they've got a running game..

"The dallas cowboys out. And that's why. I think the fact that he's on his second defensive coordinator mike mccarthy's on his second defensive coordinator in just two seasons. Like if it works with dan quinn. Then that's great. That's part of the evaluation. Mike mccarthy but if the defense struggles the way they did a year ago which was ethically bad. If that happens then the pressure is not gonna fall back on dan. Quinn is going to go right back to mike mccarthy so i think how that side of the ball plays which enlarge which is really going to be the responsibility of dan. Quinn in those players is still going to be in mike mccarthy's lap or we're gonna all get to find out starting pretty soon as we mentioned only fifty days now until the cowboys opened the regular season in tampa against the defending super bowl champion so with players getting back on the field. This is also the time of year. When some veteran players get contract extensions earlier today the san francisco forty niners locked in a key part of their defense. Adam philipson on that. Dan fred warner player. Some consider the best linebacker in football agree to a five year. Ninety million dollar extension with the forty niners you see the guaranteed money. Forty a half million dollars. It's ninety five million dollars. Tension agent justin show among the forty niners worked on this the last two weeks. They exchanged proposals. They got the deal done this morning. You see the guaranteed money on the contract and how it compares to some of the other great players in the league of big contract for a big time playing reasons that the forty niners awardee fridge warner who was a former third-round traffic headed into the last year was contract. Is they believe he embodies everything. They're looking for in a player on and off the field on the field is exactly what you want arguably the best linebacker in football and off the field. He's a model of what the forty niners are looking for. Exactly the type of representative that they weren't in san francisco thus along turned deal that justin showman and the forty niners banged out today. The forty niners haven't been shy about signing cornerstone players over the past year. We've seen big deals for tight end. George kill offensive. Tackle trent williams. The cowboys or southern california steelers pittsburgh gloss in just fifty days. The buccaneers and the cowboys will kick off. Twenty twenty one regular season tampa bay. They thursday september ninth. We all most welcome to nfl. Lie on this wednesday. Dan grazziano adam. Schefter tim hasselbeck. Wind clark's around here somewhere. We're looking for around him up and he will join us later. We're going to start with the dallas cowboys. One of two teams reporting to training camp today out in oxnard california where a cool breezes blowing in off the pacific ocean and we find our own. Ed word is. Hey ed. what's the oxnard perfect weather conditions. Practice doesn't start till tomorrow but the cowboys did have their opening press conference in raw. Being forced to follow unique protocols in fact Media members covering camp are forced to wear these tracking devices fit present vaccination records negative cova test a despite all that with a chair. Spaced out six feet apart for the media. Press conference today jerry. Jones walked apart from stephen jones and mike mccarthy came in and went over and shook hands with a bunch of different media people myself not included unfortunately But it was interesting that that that during the actual event jones became emotional several times during that press conference and once was the result of the gratitude he has for the cowboys returning here to southern california for training camp. Fat jones said he could be anywhere in the world. But there's no other place he'd rather be at this time. While describing kovic protection is more difficult. Never ever jones said there are a number of players in the pipeline. He said in terms of their vaccinations and only a handful of not had at least one shot. He does not believe that the protocols in place or the teams vaccination rate will put the cowboys at a competitive disadvantage. We have out of our ninety players here. We have a handful that in my mind have still to commit to this. A handful hand and hand has five. And that's that's if he in that several of in my mind of that finger of five or on their way to potentially have in their vaccine was not particularly on a percent on board with the what the vaccination but through the relationships that we're fortunate to have a medical community Your your watch. You watch your listen. And i think that same approach was was given to our players and to be able to watch the science the numbers and so forth and then know made a conscious decision to get the vaccination. Well there were several interesting moments here today. And one of them reflected two different philosophies between jones and his head coach. Mccarthy said nearly crashed the truck he was driving when jones called the. Tell him the cowboys. Training camp would be chronicle by the hbo show. hard knocks. Mccarthy then laughed and said once he got the vehicle back on the road that he was all in. But dan i think it reflects at jones arguably the best marketer in the entire sportsworld and mccarthy like most coaches value secrecy to the point that remember last year during the inter squad. Game a cowboy stadium. He removed all the numbers from the cowboys jersey. So perhaps jerry one this argument because jerry paparazzi's because mccarthy had very little leverage with the owner after six ten first season in dallas is going to want those numbers on their once the cameras come on once they do. Ezekiel elliott one of the prime prominent players. That will keep an eye on coming off a really rough twenty thousand finished with the fewest rushing yards fewest touchdowns and most fumbles. He's ever had in a season. Tough year for zeke ed. What are the cowboys expecting from him. This year following the worst season of his career. You know zeke elliott two-time rushing champion dedicated himself to improve his conditioning with a private running backs coach. Josh hicks working regularly with him in dallas to create an opportunity to be more productive. And i think no having dak prescott and healthy offensive. Line would certainly help as well whether he ever has. A chance to contend for rushing titles under mike mccarthy seems unlikely to me but he can certainly be an invaluable part of a winning team dallas finished third in the nfc going six and ten and struggling with those injuries to dak prescott on the offensive line. As ed just mentioned ed thanks. We're gonna have more from you later in the show back to ezekiel elliott fell average career lows last year in rushing yards per game and yards per rush and in total ahead to sixteen rushing yards above expectation which ranked thirty third among the fifty. One running back at least one hundred carries. That is not ezekiel elliott level production. Adam zeke's buddy dak prescott quarterback coming off a significant leg injury. What are you hearing about the cowboys. Plans for him as they start camp. Dan and that was one of the big headlines that came out of today's press conferences with jerry jones. Mike mccarthy the fact that dak prescott is ready for training camp and basically cleared for football activities will be ready to go with the out. There will be practicing after that grizzly injuries that he suffered last year did sign the big contract under winter right ankle surgery in october but is healthy and he will be out there during training camp regular rats going through drills and that is a very encouraging sign for dallas team looking back to bounce back from the six and ten season. That has edward alluded compromise. Some mccarthy's leverage in terms of the cowboys being are knox. No doubt about that. Tim when you look at this cowboys team obviously the quarterback dak prescott signs. The big contract always pressure on him. Who you think is under the most pressure in that building in dallas. I think it's mike mccarthy. And i'm not saying mike. Mccarthy is in danger of losing his job but at referred to the season a year ago adam just mentioned it when we look back at his overall coaching record as the head. Coach of the dallas cowboys. People aren't going to say. Oh but that was injured that one year. Oh they have the distraction of hard knocks the next year. Or hey we're going through a pandemic. No one cares about that stuff when they evaluate a toast. And when you think about why. Mike mccarthy is in dallas it's because jason garrett even though he won more games than he lost as the head. Coach dallas cowboys. He didn't get them to where they ultimately wannabe which is as superbowl champs. and so. i think that you go in. Hire a super bowl winning coach so that you aren't nine and seven or eight or thirteen and three even and then get bumped out of the postseason. He's there because they expect to win a super bowl and so i think the pressure is on him because there are many pieces on the offensive side at least that are in place for him to have success will tip. Guess what if they have a down season. One of the joneses is not going to go fire another jones. They've already fired. The defensive coordinator in mike nolan and replaced him with dan. Quinn so now the pressure will be une somebody else and for years. How many years do we go through this will. We were wondering about jason carrots future. And it's amazing to me that were one year into the tenure of mike mccarthy in dallas and feels like it's going the same direction as jason garrett will be constant attention constant scrutiny constant speculation about the head coach. But that's what happens in this league really in any city where there's not consistent winning especially in the city where the family runs the organization and especially with a team. That's under as much scrutiny. As america's team.

"So armstead kittle williams. And now you have fred. Warner forgotten blanked on for a second fred warner and now who's next so nick. Ondeck probably next off season at the earliest. But what are they going to try to ride it out for another year. You have to make a decision on deebo samuel brandon. You coming up. So it'll be interesting to see who they pay next. What do you think happens. I should think it's going to be mike mcglinchey. I think mike lynch ea hasn't resurgent season this season. If we believe what. Michael junior told our producer rob guerrero couple of weeks ago that You know he looks comfortable in his pass. It not as a run blocker you can play well. This season i could see the forty niners Before us i think we're still two years out of an extension for him right not taken And that's going to be. They picked up his option. Picked up his option for twenty twenty to eleven million so after that he's essentially going to be a free agent so i i'm fascinated to see how much he gets paid and how much people hate that. He's going to get paid because he is a good player. And you keep good players around. I know it's very hard concept understand. But he's young he's effective any plays. Yeah he missed a few games. Twenty nine thousand nine but to think that mcglinchey won't ever improve is not fair to think that all the problems are on him and not the revolving door right guard next to him is also missing a lot of import context so perhaps the reason that they drafted. Aaron banks was knowing that. Hey i need to fix this position but it also ensures that my right tackle doesn't have to worry about the guy next to him as well so it'll be a nice. Yeah it'll be a nice little domino effect for mcglinchey. But now i completely forgot about immigrants you but that's going to happen. It's just a matter of how much and They tend to take care of their players. How do you feel about one of the beat. Writers today brought up. Well what about. You should have done this with the forest. Buckner our favorite beat writer. When are you ever going. When are we going to close that book. Turn the page and do you think has merit like do you think this should have been a buckner decision. Yeah actually appreciate the beat writers getting a little spicy Change in dynamic is usually pretty manila. So i appreciate it but i mean come on. We're we're two years path of divorce butter situation We've talked about over over and over again. These situations aren't comparable off against the cap. They had to make a move a first round pick. Let's just let's just move on fourth buckner van player And you know. It's very similar. Fred warner high character died but you get from him and if devante law balls out the season no one's going to bat so we're we're taking but you know i appreciate been. There's always going to be somebody that bats in high so you can never rule out this lovely fan base man no. it's. I'm glad that fred warner got paid. I can't wait to see what's next What else do we need to tackle here. I feel like a pretty much. Not sarah is perfect timing So normally we record on tuesday nights and it's ready to go stats. Does this thing to the next morning ready to go this week. Just kinda worked out that. We can report to wednesday morning. We woke up literally. I woke up in. My phone's buzzy was warners contract extension itself perfect timing. I'm glad it happened. Blabber able to give our takeaways hopefully listen to it training camps around the corner. I think they report later this week. Right in six days as i write twenty sevens and officially doesn't begin to thirty first so we're edging closer towards the bossy the next time we speak We will we will talk about the offense and then after that we will be having live. not library downs but just breakdowns of training camp practice. Oh it's here and fred warners. Contract proves at its here because he was not stepping on that field without a new contract. Everybody near that. So it's it's good to get that out of the way with a week or so to spare and we didn't have to worry about you know running up to the quote unquote deadline of training. Camp is going to report. What's going on are they going to pay. Is this going to trickle into august and possibly the preseason so don't have to worry about any of those story lines got it out of the way now. We just focused on football in the australian lances contract. He's still unsigned. I expect him to get signed. Hopefully in the next week he will not step on the field without a contract. I don't know what the holdup is these rookie contracts fairly straightforward He's a tom condon guy. Who's a high level agent affect that deal to get done as well. I expect capital. He's run six million dollar range and should be awful sailing from there but another interesting. You know trent williams and breadwinner both got paid off season. They both got a combined. Eighty million dollars. Guarantee the trent williams deal. If you remember went down the middle of the night. I remember to three in the morning front wings on instagram or united twitter crazy. This one a lot. Different You know early in the morning smoothly on a week before training camp no worries and have their franchise locked down if you're a fans in exciting time because after best players under contract next. Xp four five years destroy landscape. Pai before tuesday. Which is i would say. Tuesday july twenty seven when they report as a team dray will get the bag for tuesday. Good get him on the field. No excuses let's get paid. Get him on the field and let him compete. That'll do it for us cannot wait to talk about actual football man. I'm excited feels like five years. "Low expectations. So they figure okay. This is the expected tax rate. What's the actual act. Rate was difference. Fred warners was minus sixteen in half. And that's the best mark any defensive players in two thousand seventeen so not just any linebacker Player in the last five years Only three linebackers posted a completion. Rate below fifty five percent edmark. Barron was the other one. He's a converted safety. So fred warner's the only true linebacker that fits that mole and just fantastic play as coverage linebacker And i think people don't give them enough credit for that versatility. He brought his past season. I mean a lot of people. I think at twenty nineteen thought that the linebacker play was really benefited from the fact that they had such a stout defensive line for them yet. I thought fred warner shattered that narrative this past season when You know the four hundred was completely banged up. They didn't have the same password. Yes fred warner was just as effective as coverage player against the run in even contributed I think you russell passer ninety three times and he recorded thirty thirteen pressures both career highs so his versatility has been improving your ear and now under go ryan's i think he's gonna taste that four as is even more aggressive as fast and it's only you know i think only gonna get better than fred moore's centerpiece of that so i don't get the takes that they overpaid for. What are the outer supposed to meet player at a position of need. But what else was supposed to be paid player. And you will take care of that blair homegrown player face of the franchise player. I it's not often that the numbers match up with the eye test. Because you can manipulate a lot of these things. But warner last year was one of two players yet. That had more than one hundred tackles two or more pass defense to a more interceptions and one or more fumble recovery He allowed at one point. I believe it was up until week. Sixteen i don't have a final number. He was allowing three point nine yards per target which is unreal. And just the fact that he's asked to do what he does. I remember i was talking to a former quarterback on the forty niners roster new told me they have a check where anytime a defense goes or the offense goes empty. They just have worn bogarde. The receiver. Who else can say that. They have a linebacker. They're comparable with guarding. Whether it's you know. Cooper got a hollywood brown whatever the type of receive it is and we've seen him. We've seen him care. Receivers down the middle of the field. And he's running in stride with him. He's remember julian edmund. He's taken routes underneath. He just does so many things where It's it's hard not to justify paying him honestly so emam..

"Welcome to shanta plan. This is episode forty nine. We have some football to talk about. I'm joined by a as always a cost. What's going on. Man was advocate Finally excited to have some real football news in not just the office dribble that we were talking about the so. The forty niners paid. Fred warner the was never in doubt and thankfully we did not have to suffer through summer of hashtags. But the forty niners made fred warner the highest paid linebacker in the nfl. How long will that be. I do not know because you know. Roquan smith is coming next year. Darius leonard is coming more than likely within a couple of months if not before. The season starts but fred warner. Five years ninety. Five million forty. Five million guaranteed was a forty million guaranteed A lot of money guaranteed five as forty point five air. It is just a great for him. So i was born in san diego. He's from san diego. This is great to see you know people in the city come up. I like that. Obviously one of the best players one of the best defensive players. nfl Just throughout this morning we've been seeing that people are saying he's the best coverage linebacker the nfl. Which is true. But i think it's fair to say that fred warner's one of the best coverage players in the. Nfl is it's important to make that distinction and he just means so much to this team and he signed through the next wet through. Twenty twenty. six is a big deal. wars Your initial takeaways. When you saw this deal go down. Reggie think overpay but did you think you know. We're kind of expecting it to ballpark right. Fred warner embodies. Exactly what a franchise player. It's drafted in the third round as the tuner and works. His way up in is now at the top position. All pro player on the field at high character off field. Hatton leader available. I tweeted out. He's played at least ninety. Three percent of the defensive snaps. The last three seasons which highest on the forty niners also available reliable. It's exactly what you want in a player. And the last time coordinators had player of his caliber deforest buckner joseph trade him for a first round pick And us out on germont kin law this time around. It didn't have that option surly. They chose to go ahead. And pay warner i have no problem with the contract. Nick in the highest paid linebacker. But you mentioned when these new deals getting for roquan smith their slender most likely warner's annual average values gonna draw but i've got no problem with it Ah logical bring a positional value when it comes to paying players A premium yet. I allow people misunderstand. What framework brings to the field. Whether it's in coverage you know we talk about cars. Dance goes ryan back covers. Slot receivers And his numbers are right there with any defensive back and then he turned that around. He's good run Yet career high pressures. I believe in pass rushes on this past season. So he added that element asked the package linebacker. Exactly what you want player. Glad they got the deal done week before training camp and we didn't get any silly. There is an elite player. So on the forty niners. He's top three coverage top three pass rush top Run stop everything. You want on defense. He's there and you mentioned just him being a team player. He puts the team first. And i remember Last year he had the interception where he jumped believe. It was against the giants and after that he didn't take credit for he. He said i gotta give credit to tart and he went in basically gave a long answer explaining how tarp saw this during the week and fast forward. Oj's he asking. why didn't you skip. You don't have new contract. what are you doing. you can risk this and he said. I put my teammates. I i'm not gonna you know this is what i do so i think having that type of mindset just makes it so easy to keep him around market him a he should be one of the faces of the nfl. He really that good. He's young and he's a marketable guys. He's a fun guy to be around so it's good to see guys like that. Get reward paid because you mentioned not having the third round pick everybody you know we always point back to the first round is but hitting on these second third fourth round picks like that's really build your rosser and build them. Just become a playoff caliber team. And that's what they are. And that's why the forty nine niners to have a very strong very strong roster right now so three highest paid players at their position. Even though it's not gonna last long we talked a little bit about that is that a problem is going to be an issue. Going forward Prom they've got a quarterback on a rookie contract who isn't going to eat much of the salary cap. So the four nine hundred setting themselves up for trailing to takeover make six million dollars a season and you spill the gaps everywhere else so no problem with Pay guys premium especially when we expect a salary cap to really rise years here Postcode at one of the one of the big worries that you know a lot of people mentioned were was jimmy garoppolo's contract going to stop the team from doing what they wanted to do and disease move proved that it did not yeah. I don't think it had as much of an impact as we thought. I think the biggest thing for that was the market or merrin corners the market for collies check and some of the players. That were free agents Avocation brat minion mosaic Tar iran get a premium yet. Didn't really right so they all came back one year. More proven deals and that gave the forty niners sort of the freedom to be able to go ahead. Keep jimmy garoppolo. Still draft quarterback and fred were an extension so a fantastic work with the front office right salary. Cap guys prog murphy. brian jeff. Diamond all those guys at work in the front office at crunch numbers. They did halbe jobs. Off season in putting together this roster i think one of the warriors was. You know an ad or is isn't the right way to say just because they signed samson had become but could they have gotten a better pass rush. Maybe who was worth like two or three million more and then you go down the line. Would they have been interested more. Would they have gone in harder. On a julio jones type of player so in that sense maybe but in the big picture they were able to get what they needed to and jimmy still on the roster so you have a veteran you have rookie and then you were able to bring back your core and maintain your core which is a big deal. So some of the takes surrounding fred warner. This morning there is a lot of people have have not watched fred warner and most of it comes back to just being a linebacker and off while linebacker isn't really valued in the nfl. And you can just look at how. They're paid before obviously This contract and i think actually warner being paid. What he's paid is a good thing and tells you that he is really that valuable but you know a lot of people they look at warner and they think that it's a terrible misunderstanding of the positional value. Because they see ninety five and five. And that's all that really matters but you ignore a lot of what they do or what does as a player so the analytics crowd thinks that you don't pay off ball linebacker because you wanna have a stronger coverage unit so overpaying for an off ball linebacker. They don't bit like it's the cost effective way to go about building your team. Which ignores the fact. That fred warner is the best coverage linebacker in the nfl and one of the best coverage players. The nfl if you were to name ten the top team coverage players in the nfl. It'd be very hard to make that list and not list warner so. Context is missing here. But that's what happens on the internet. i'm going to various leonard. Stop months ago and you know. I've seen a ton of comments. Like oh he's overrated. He's not as good as darius leonard. This not even true. They're not playing the same sport. What what were some of the some of the texture you saw. Did it drive you crazy to it. Did and a lot of the takes are just people. See fred warner. They see linebacker. The highest paid linebacker. He forty million he nine million dollars total and they just think that's too much for not linebacker like you mentioned yet. Was the numbers behind. What fred warren has done past season passer rating loud sixty or a nfl dot com Stats tracks this stat..
