"I'm Dave Freeman. And the time is 5 35. It's morning edition from NPR News. I'm Steve Inskeep, and I'm David Greene. President elect Joe Biden can finally begin his transition to power. The General Services Administration has now ascertained that Biden, likely one, the head of the agency. Said legal developments, in part convinced her it was time she's likely pointing to the Trump campaign's court challenges, which have mostly failed. Finally, Biden and his team will get more classified briefings and be able to meet with Trump Administration officials. Now, most Republicans are still not publicly acknowledging Biden's wind. Congressman Fred Upton, a Republican from Michigan, was an early GOP voice, though to congratulate by many joins us this morning Congress and welcome Well, thanks Always a pleasure. So for three weeks in the middle of a deadly pandemic, and incoming president was not able to hold important meetings with people inside the current government, how do you feel about that? You know, it's really tragic in my district Last week, Southwest Michigan in my 1000 people in my home county tested positive we're losing somebody. Really across the country every every minute and you gotta have that transition. I'm excited about the vaccine Visors, my largest employer, and of course they're making it in my district. I'll expect it to be approved by the FDA very shortly and next, literally number of days and AstraZeneca is right behind him and Madonna as well. So great news, but we got to make sure that we're able to distribute that and guess what it's going to carry into next year. And it's so important that not only the briefings on intelligence go forward but also just domestic policy that Americans care about so much so That we all care about. So it's you know, it's it's time the election's over here in Michigan, the voters spoke 154,000 vote difference. And it's time to move forward at some point be overturned. No evidence of fraud. Are you sending that message to your colleagues? I mean, why do you think so many of your Republican colleagues air not coming out and saying what you're saying? Well, I don't know. I don't like to speak. You know, little general is you don't speak for others. I was, I think maybe the first House Republican T o I congratulate vice president now President elect Biden back on November 7th. But I saw the list earlier this morning there a good number of members. Now both Republicans, both in the house in the Senate that have come out woman, my leadership Liz Cheney used Our conference chair. It's It's the damn is broken. It Z coming together. It's a little bit late, but it's it's coming together. I mean, your state has been so important in both of the recent presidential elections. Your party lost. This one is, as you say, I mean, what do you think needs to happen? What case needs to be made to Michigan voters. To get Michigan back in into the red and in the next election. Well, you know a number of things, you know, I'm a member of the problem Solvers Caucus. I'm actually one of the vice chairs and we have four members currently from Michigan. Ethical expand those numbers, but we have divided government. What I see people saying not only in Michigan but around the country. They don't care necessarily if you're Republican or Democrat. Yes, of course you have values. They want the job to get done, and they're tired of policy. Partisan politics. And that's why the problem solvers caucus has been pretty successful on the number of fronts. We was 35 days shut down that last year with past the major immigration bill. And we were the very first group to beat the situation room with Debra Burkes on Cove ID. We were still pushing hard to get another covert package shed done completed to the president that he consigned. This next month versus waiting until 2021. That's people want to see results and that do people want to see that the congressman and I have to ask you that I mean more than 70 million people voted for president who is You know, in many ways, poisoning the bipartisan well fight by holding out, not conceding election. I mean, some of what he says. Seems, you know, not so bipartisan that well, if you do you want him to remain the face of your party. If your goal is to Two to do bipartisan work and get things done. Well, You know, it's the end. He was saying that you know, as you look at the next cove, it package he was he was wanting to get a package done that was going to exceed, in fact, with the House voted on, but A to the end to heat. He wanted to stay as president and wasn't accepting that there were at least here in Michigan. There 154,000 vote difference. I mean, it's it's over today. They couldn't identify fraud or misused or station wagons or truckloads of ballots that weren't being counted. Um you know, this is this is not the chads from the tooth from the year 2000. You know, here in Michigan. We vote on the machine. They saved the paper ballot. It's it was certified by all 83 counties and again by the state border campuses. Yesterday. I'm a 3 to 1 vote. Just just in a few seconds in a few words, Do you want Donald Trump to remain the face of the Republican Party? Well, let's see what happened. And we get a long time before 2024. All right. Republican Congressman Fred Upton of Michigan. Thanks so much for your time, Congressman. You bet. Some more important election news. Now, after a public vote, the giant panda.
The Last US Civil War Pension
"Triplet was born in Nineteen thirty in Wilkes County North Carolina Sixty five years after the end of the civil war. How she ended up receiving civil war pension is one of those stories that you wouldn't believe if it wasn't true. But when you do the math, it actually does workout. Her father was most triplet was a veteran of the civil war. He had the distinction of having fought for both the confederacy and the Union. He was a member of the fifty third North Carolina infantry who fought in the battle of Gettysburg. On the way to Gettysburg most fell ill and was hospitalized the illness probably saved his life because most of his unit was either killed or wounded during the battle. After he recovered, he deserted the confederates and joined up with the third north, Carolina mounted infantry which fought for the union. The unit was known as Kirks raiders after commander Colonel, George Washington. Kirk. After the war Mos- returned to North Carolina got married and started a family his wife Mary passed away in one, thousand, nine, hundred, ninety. As with many older civil war veterans, they would often take younger second wives especially during the Great Depression as their pension was considered a source of stable income. In one, thousand, nine, hundred, eighty, four at the age of seventy eight MOS married his second wife Alita who was twenty nine years old Mohsen Alita had five children. One of them Irene was born in one, thousand, nine, thirty when Mos- was eighty-three. Irene was just eight years old when her father died at the age of ninety two after returning home from a civil war veterans reunion. Irene had a cognitive disability which made her eligible to continue to receive her father civil war pension after his death as a quote, helpless child of a veteran. She received her father's pension of seventy three dollars and thirteen cents every month from her father's death in one thousand, nine, thirty, eight to her death in. Twenty twenty. The amount was never for inflation. The entire time it's estimated she received approximately seventeen thousand dollars over the course of her life. In addition to having received the last civil war pension, she was also the last child of a civil war veteran. The second to last child of a civil war veteran also had an interesting story in two thousand. Eighteen Fred Upton passed away at the age of ninety seven. His father was William H Upton. Who is a civil war veteran and the former governor of the state of Wisconsin who was elected in eighteen ninety four. Because of the occurrence of young women marrying much older men with pensions, the passing of the last civil war widow wasn't that long ago either in two thousand and eight motty Hopkins died at the age of ninety three in thousand, nineteen, thirty, four at the age of nineteen she married eighty six year old William Cantrell who served as a sixteen year old soldier in the confederate army. Heavy. Artillery Regiment. In one, thousand, nine, hundred, eighty, six there was an episode of the TV Game Show I've got a secret with a ninety five year old man named Samuel Seymour. The panelists had to guess what the guest secret was. Samuel Seymour. Was the last surviving witness to Abraham Lincoln's assassination. He was a five year old boy was taken affords theater and said in the balcony across the theater from the present it. there. Is a clip of the appearance on Youtube and I highly recommend viewing it if you're interested in such things. The. Last surviving person who was born as a slave in the United States was Peter Mills who died in Nineteen seventy-two he was born into slavery in eighteen sixty one and live to be one hundred, ten, one person was both born into bondage and live to see the moon landing. The last surviving veteran of the Revolutionary War was John Gray who died in eighteen sixty, eight at the age of one, hundred four he's one of the only people who live to see both the revolution and the civil war oddly enough he was born on George Washington's estate Mount Vernon and his father died in the revolutionary. War. The, last surviving veteran of Napoleon's army was a Polish man Vincent Markowitz who died at one hundred and eight in nineteen three and the last veteran of the war of eighteen twelve was Hiram Cronk who passed away in one thousand, nine, five at the age of one, hundred and five. In Two thousand eleven at the age of one hundred and ten American Frank. Buck was the last surviving veteran of World War One in the world to pass away. Demographers estimate that the last veteran of World War Two will pass away sometime around the year twenty, forty four. It will probably be someone who fought at a very young age and lives to be at least one, hundred and ten. It's amazing how the lives of some people can span such incredible lengths of time and how we can have lives that overlap them. We think of the civil war is being a long time ago. Yet we're only two or three generations removed from people who lived through all of these events.

And I think we felt that way without a real crisis. They don't deserve any support or the next vote, period. And I know the vote is what is so very important to so many people, but if they're not accomplishing, what they were sent to Washington in this case to do they don't belong there, pretty simple. I think we were sent to do something to come something every morning and. You got to work to resolve issues, but in congress has a lot of responsibilities. Also going to say that our forefathers wrote oversight into the constitution. It is when responsible oversight is also a job of the congress, but you can do both. You can, you know, so I do believe that. And I do think that you gotta foul the facts and no one's above the law either. So. If the president has broken any laws wouldn't somebody have found that by now with all of the investigations from the moment, he's foot into the white. They have found it, and that the question is what I think that we don't need to tear this country apart anymore. That's what we're as we I read this Muller report, not once, not twice. And you'll have to get it from your day the money for the border wall and to well, let's take that one up. Mike Lewis, how members are paid. And whether the president has any say over that. Well, the members are, of course, federal employees, they're elected by their constituents in their states and in their districts, but they're paid by federal tax payer dollars. So. And they're already paid of all the talk of the shutdown that peace is not is not a part of the shutdown talk. So they are paid through October. And yeah, the semantic game is silly. But they think that this can be cobbled together. The question for me is and this is where my scepticism arises is whether speaker Pelosi with all of her political interests, Ken back, whatever this compromise may be we're already heard from Kamala Harris who's running for president. She says, even if you give dreamers citizenship. She still would not support any additional money for border barriers to Ray in Dearborn Ray good afternoon to you. And welcome to the show they guy. Hey question that I had I wish I spoke to dangle. I'm your other guest. I wanted to ask her. They're so worried about the border, which is an easy fix. I I. Being former border patrol. I know I could fix that issue pretty quickly. But what are they going to do about the fourteen to heard a figure of twenty five million that are already here? They're so worried about the front door you're getting killed through the back door. So what are they gonna do about that? Do you think this? This little committee. They're putting together has been addressing of that. Absolutely. Not. They've had thirty years since Reagan could fix this. And none of these clowns that we've set up there have dumb anything more Wilby. I answer for me. Ray? God knows I can't. But I think I can tell you what Debbie Dingle might say. And that is let's fix the problem of people that are still coming over. I in Fred would say the same thing, let's fix that first. And then handle whatever the issues are with those that are already here, including the dreamers. I for one would like to see them resolve the dreamers issue. Now, if you're going to open it up go big or go home because we don't want to go through this again, what would be your quick fix. I'm I'm curious, right. The border patrol do their job if you basically let the border patrol. I don't wanna make sound like anything like an aggressive move. But you let him off the chain and do the job. They will do the job. Are you suggesting are you suggesting President Trump isn't letting them do their job? Well, you're talking about bringing the army down, and they do all this other kind of different stuff. Just let the board but told me their jobs. It's really not that difficult you can control areas with with technology, obviously. You know, they're talking about the numbers going down in. But I don't believe that for a second. Because I have the experience of what's going on in the border. It's all just a numbers game. What about the people that have got away that they have no idea who apprehensions are down. You don't even know who who who got away air quotes got away almost it's hard to say. But it's an easy job. Just just let them do what it is that they do and they'll take care of most of this problem. I'm fortunately, you get the politics involved in it all the and that's what happens at gums up. Everything will put their hands are tied who do you fall for that? Because why isn't the union speaking up, then if they would have that opportunity? This is a political football and has been since Reagan it has been absolutely central. Don't question. Why why is it that in the legal alien comes a constituent is counted in the census and becomes a constituent for. More representations. So you're going to send more reps in the congress based on illegal alien edge population within the city to represent people that shouldn't be here in the first place. I I I totally get it and share your frustration. Ray thanks for your service down on the border. And we appreciate you being with us. I wanna go back. I'll go back. Well, they need you. I mean, you saw this contract. He spent sixty million it can only get thirty three higher. So they're having problems meeting. What what you know? And what you need to be high standards because corruption could be a problem otherwise. Back former border patrol agents to put in certain positions, and and and put the agents, I'm fifty seven I don't particularly want to chase people around the desert anymore. But I can do a hell of a lot. You could. Well, in the meantime, maybe we could just clone. You that would be a simple solution. Bray? Thanks for your call. We appreciate it. He stumped for Fred Upton, which I think is a career ender right there. Sorry. Did he actually say, yeah? He said, I like Republicans Sumi or something like that. I mean, just tone deaf. So I'll find that that quote for tomorrow how we climbed find him at down with tyranny dot com. And of course, the blue America Pac as always thank you so much Howie. We'll talk to you. Bye. Bye. Bye. Bye. Take care left yet Roe Conn what about Roe Conn. He's a first term congressman not a presidential candidate yet. See tomorrow everyone..

"He is faced unbelievable personal tragedy in every time handled it with strength and use that tragedy to help other people, whether it's funny cure for cancer or just stopping people in the hallway at the White House or going through tough times talking them through it from the perspective of what he suffered. He is a his not a perfect person. He has flaws as a person to Kenan like we all do, but he is one of America's most human politicians. You know, the question for Joe Biden, if he decides to run is is his old school approach politics. Born in a different era in. Relation to a very different Republican party than the one Trump leads. Now is that appropriate for the crisis moment in America. And I'm not sure it is. I don't I I would love to live in a world where Joe Biden Mitch McConnell getting a room, and they could figure out how to get Medicare for all. And you know, cut some deal like the mythology the isn't really true of tip O'Neill and Ronald Reagan like is that possible? I don't think that's possible. I think the only way to return American politics is something like normalcy is to beat these Republicans and beat them bad. It'd beat them over and over again. And I don't think befriending them is the way to get it done. And I think that that job addict it's gonna be a tough case for Joe Biden to make if you were to run for run in the democratic primary now to his credit. He is not changing his he's being very clear about what he's doing. Like there was nothing. Thing in polling or Twitter or incarceration democratic activists. And suggests this is a good message. But it is what he believes in. He's doing and the re either be a market for it. Or there won't. Yeah. I mean, he's he, you know, the fact that he said that this morning means he's not shying away from this at the very least, which you know, good for you. If that's what you believe. Look, this is a tough one. Like, you you read the story, and you can see why Joe Biden did this right? Fred Upton was instrumental in helping increasing funding for cancer research. That means a lot to Joe Biden last son to cancer. And so and Joe Biden's already prone to want to work with people across the aisle. So he said something nice about Upton. You know, you you understand why that would happen Upton. Also tried to repeal the Affordable Care Act, which is a bit discordant with trying to increase funding for cancer research. But you know, Joe Biden is the type of person who says I don't agree with you on one thing. But I like what you did on something else. And so I'm going to say you're a good person to work with you because I want to work with you again..

"I was I was looking through you know, who takes money on they have a subcommittee on health. So so in other words, the energy and commerce committee and the subcommittee on health, which is the one that's writing legislation about healthcare. And I was looking at that one and looking to see who's taking money of obviously, all the Republicans take tons of money like tons as much as they can get and they're on the side of all of these special interests that will pay out that money, whether whether they're on their side to get the money or they get the money because they're on their side. I mean who could say, but you know, I have my suspicions that they get a lot more money because of their willingness to do whatever the healthcare industry wants them to do. But there's an awful lot of Democrats who do that too. And the worst of all of them is Frank Pallone. He's taking more money from the the medical industrial complex than anyone who has ever served in. Congress is just about up more than Paul Ryan more than any Republican more than Fred Upton who who used to run the committee. He's taking the most of anybody ever in history, including people who started in congress and then went on. Onto to to the Senate like Chuck Schumer. I mean, I'm not saying it's people haven't taken a lot. But this guy has taken more than anyone. So then I saw looking down the risk of who's on that subcommittee. And and who's who's taking and most of most of the Democrats are taking a lot. Then I ran across pulsar beings naming and I notice next his name zero. Not one cent, and I've never seen that before on any anywhere. I mean, even with Bernie, you don't see that. Because what happens is, you know, say say we're talking about healthcare they nurse decides to give twenty five dollars. That's counted. As you know, when they make these these lists of how much these people take just an individual nurse giving twenty five dollars. That's counted. As money that's coming from the healthcare and our right? Everyone will have a little bit of money Sarbanes somehow zero his nothing from the from the industry where he is on the subcommittee that oversees that industry that is like I love this guy. Now, I never had any feelings about Paul about our Baynes ever. He really I had a really good Bill a few years ago, Sarbanes Oxley or something. I can't remember what it was. I know I tried to it. It had to do with campaign, finance, isn't it? Possibly. I think it did. You know, Oxley was definitely like a a Wall Street regulation. You know, someone who watched over Wall Street, so it could have been something that in that line as well. But I don't down on corporate fraud created the public company accounting oversight board to oversee the accounting industry.

"Yeah. I just want to reiterate it, you know, the main thing basically would Michael said, you know, the main thing I've been looking at the house, and you know, like fivethirtyeight right now as a what is it? Of it thirty three, you know, their projection right now, which you know, before I think it was thirty four so not really much of a change. I mean, everything is kind of moving along. I agree. Obviously the rooms I don't know that's been called yet. But she's very likely gonna lose. And Gil them, you know, and and obviously the the Nelson raise their obviously disappointing, but you know, they did tighten up a little bit. And so I mean they were margin of error races. So wasn't. It's not totally shocking. But obviously disappointing the house that there's still a lot going on in the house. But I mean, it looks like it's pretty much the projections. Among the sixteen out of the eighteen pretty much all come in. True. I don't think any of those people are gonna lose. And you know, they're picking up to in it probably in Virginia the second in the. Seven like you said that the thirty second calling Allred is gonna win. They're totally shocked about that eleven district max rose, Rachel think our name is a bit cofer. She's a poly SCI professor at at. What is Christopher Newport university? She picked that that race. He said that the Democrats are gonna win forty six. So I was very surprised that that I mean things are things are still, you know, looking real totally on track, you know, with a few. I think they actually made go over that total thirty three mean like Carolyn board does by seven forty two percent in in Georgia. And and he's just I think, you know, things overall are pretty good one another surprise Matt long. John up over Fred Upton in Michigan. Six with forty nine percent in with a four point lead. You know, that was way down on people's lists as possible win also Dezsi laundry again on Illinois thirteenth up by nine with forty seven percent over Rodney Davis, the Republican. So you know, I the the sixteenth. This is this is the one thing where there was the outlier poll in Cisco Hannah PA sixteenth that nobody really did on it. But I thought that they were gonna win. I have it. I think never fifty on my on my most notable district and he's up by two point one with seventy seven percent in over Mike Kelly. So, you know, I just think that it's. Yeah. You know, it started out really disappointing. I actually was looking at the numbers for Donnelly. And I kind of like, they know he's not looking so great. But I think it just shows that the divide between the rule areas and the and the the the urban areas are just wider than ever. And you know, the lead the Democrats are doing pretty well in the suburbs. I think they're gonna hit their numbers, you know, or lease kit..

"He really is attracts a very diverse energized, happy group of young people. And I haven't seen that in any other state. They are totally fired up for this guy and it's like you check out his social media following offer. He's very active on. So he's, you know, he's millennial. He's young guy. He's very active on social media. He dialed into how it works and his following on their particularly among young people is absolutely amazing. They will. I mean, you you of all people know this well of how I've seen some social media can get, particularly when it's involved in politics and with John J just isn't that way. Man. He has people that just love them into fend him and are growing the John James army out there. And you know, I'm, I'm excited, but this Wednesday, he's hosting event in Pontiac with Donald Trump, junior, Kimberly, Guilfoil, and kid rock you Brock's actually and do a little bit of a concert. I know they had this worth the second venue now because they had so many people that wanted to come. They had to get much larger venue. So I'm excited to see that on Wednesday night and get people fired up. I think he's gonna have like five thousand people at this at this rally on on on Wednesday in, you know, only you know, baiter overworked and draw five thousand people. But he. He's just he's, he is the guy who sort of energy youthful energy on our ticket and either get helping greatly as you move forward, you know, and the president it was. It was great because the president was in. He's in pretty tough primary in President Trump tweeted out his support form month or so before and it sorta helped you put rocket fuel in him. President has tweeted since about John in his strong support form as has the vice president and so forth. And I mean, they've caught on and they've noticed we need male, we need Republicans all over the country to take a look at this guy and hop on teams. Of what's going on with the the congressional races, how many seats are Republicans defending and how was it look for Republicans in terms of, you know, the the wave might end right in in Michigan if you guys, you're able to hold onto your seats? Yeah, I I, it's it's interesting. We have fourteen seats, nine Republicans and five Democrats. I think that they're Democrats are seriously contesting. Basically two of the races early may. It's thought that Jack vergamo general jacker men in Michigan warmest the UP. They're gonna come after him and and there's just a whole debacle their candidate net and sort of seem to slip off. And that's harder Trump country up there. And there, Dave Trott retired this year. And that one is one that they are. The Democrats are contesting hard in a Oakland County. Seat right next over my mom was and Mike Bishop in the eighth district there. I think there's more money getting spent in that race than almost any race in in the country right now in Mike kinship is strong. And you know the the eleventh district I think is probably the one that has the best chance to flip. But you know, you know, Epstein who's our nominee is is running a good campaign and we'll see what happens on election day. So they, you know, I think at best for the Democrats they could go plus too. I think. Plus one is probably the best that they can do. Although the Democrats also I think they're trying to spend money to make Fred Upton workout in south west Michigan..
