And so B-52s came in and did a big concert with the station the whole thing. And he comes up to do an on air interview. And we had him record voicemail. Eric's not here right now. And old college buddy of mine, Steve robust, who became a big record executive. He was one of the first road managers. Yeah. B-52s. Yeah, that would have been fun. One of their first ones? It was right after Everett after college and he had graduated and that's I heard. And the funny thing is, I knew he was in the record business somewhere and I forgot what it was one of the VH1's behind the music with some band, whatever. And all of a sudden, and this is just about ten years ago. And almost and it's like, there he is. There he is talking about this band. I'm like, they're Steve. I actually took a picture of the screen and put it on Facebook saying, we went to college with him and it was really. And then people say, yeah, but I went to college with you and so, I tried to do a radio show. He completely did. Why is that noteworthy? Because it's talk radio. My wife said that somebody we were sitting there talking to another couple and she said, well, I don't know, Eric might be able to do that. And I said to her, I looked at her like, why would I be able to do that? Because of my by the way, one of the best things is when you're out somewhere in your with people, you know some people and you don't know other people and your friends will immediately say, well, Gary's on the radio. What kind of music you play? Oh, I don't. Oh. You're talk radio. Yeah. I can't believe that anybody would introduce you. Yeah. Knowing that you do talk race. I am beyond that. Yeah. I don't deal. "The last tour, but it doesn't mean we're not gonna do shows anymore. We're not gonna tour anymore, really. Well, we say that. But we're not gonna do like an Elton John or share thing where we keep touring and say we're not. I keep calling it the share well tour because, you know, never say never, but being on the road is wearing, but playing the shows, it's great. Yeah, we'll do shows. We'll take a little bit more shows, especially like festivals and big outdoor fireworks. They're not ruling out much. I mean, well, I think what he's trying to say is long tours and being away from home for a long time is hard. I wonder if you can bring us back a bit. I mean, a lot of people have wondered what was in the water. Athens, Georgia, in the mid to late 70s. Fluoride. All right. You know, being 52, REM. Well, there was nothing to do, so. We were the first sort of new wavy punk band. So we had to make our own fun and we just one night had a flaming volcano at hunan's Chinese restaurant that we had. We didn't have money for food. We had 5 straws, 6 straws actually, because our friend Owen Scott was with us, and we started jamming in Owens basement. After the flaming volcano and magic was in the air. But we used a party and crash parties. Ruin party. Well, you know, it was at the head of a really great vibe. You know, you didn't need a lot of money, which is why a lot of people ended up staying once for like 60 bucks a month. My rent was $15 a month. I had, sort of the original love shack out in the country. It was that way back in the middle of a field It didn't have a bathroom, though. We don't need to hear everything you wanted. Well, Fred Schneider. Yes. I think I speak for a lot of people when I ask. Are you crazy? Well, maybe. My rock lobster and not rockfish. One that still springs to mind is a concert in December nineteen eighty four an old theater called E._m.. LSM Worcester Massachusetts two thousand oddballs including myself. You have to remember that for the most part up to that time with the behemoths Abba and Fleetwood fleetwood Mac as big exceptions boundary usually all girl groups are featured one woman usually fronting the band as a singer despite their overall other worldliness the beef 52s help normalize mixed gender obvious collapse the beef fifty to debut album didn't sound like anything else when it was released nineteen seventy-nine it was almost as if the jetsons forms of bands in which they transmitted the melodic hooks of the twilight zone theme underpinned by the Propelling Guitar Drum Drum Combo of nineteen sixty surf music but just as a band drew upon the past they also had their gaze firmly set upon the future.
