Find the Helpers with Fred Guttenberg

"Hi My friend Fred I love you so much. Can you start please by reminding listeners of your story briefly tell us about who you were before Jamie was murdered and who you've become after. Was Murdered? It was just nothing more than your. Typical Dan of two kids to teach kids as a husband. Suburban lifestyle now. This week, that's the lifestyle community that was known to be super. And secure I also was rubber at a son. Who's going through the loss of mine? Her brother Michael From cancer related to service and. He died in October two, thousand seventeen. I want to thank Mr Collins Mr Naylor putting this together. But as I sit her today, I can't help but think. What an incredible metaphor. This room is. For the entire process. That getting healthcare and benefits for nine eleven. First responders has come to. ME. A filled room. Of nine eleven first responders. And in front of me. A, nearly empty congress. So, my wife took A. Forty. Two, thousand, eighteen. Months after my family's call to the loss of micro and as a family, we've never been through anything wiped out before this kind of significant loss we were fortunate. We just all were managing to live our lives and my brother's loss was the first. My parents had outlived their son and that's the worst thing that happened to her family. Right. It should have been the most overwhelming family ever experienced except four months. Later, my daughter was hard because I sent her to school I to school at fourteen to learn to be safe to laugh to be excited about coming home on Valentine's Day for the plan. I had set for life family and didn't work out that way shooter came into school at day my slide Jesse. Thank God I still get to. But J visitor cemetery and. As only, this kind of thing had harrison was the outlet. Grandparents should alain grandchildren. It. Stops inning for me and really understood the gravity of what happened. I went into this whole new life. I don't have the same life I had before and my wife actually became depended upon me. But upon the amazing people who I got to surround myself with WHO became a part of my life or who were already a if my life and I would emission and we're going to succeed we're going to change the. Politics of country we're going to pass on safety after November third every time I hear you till the story I feel like there is something a little bit more grounded in the way in which you tell your story, and I'm wondering if it is because you had this time to write this book and really reflect you've got a book coming called find the Helpers and before we get into that I, want to note The huge amount of praise. This book is already getting new have blurbs from members of Congress actors, activists, people from across the social and political spectrum, and they're all raving about it and I don't think in my life. I've seen such hype about a book even before it is released. So what do you think it is what do you think it is about finding the helpers that makes it so universally loved and also. Tell me about the process of writing it, and if it was Cathartic for you because I think we hear. So often people that tell stories an especially stories that are so close to your being your heart people always say you know it was Cathartic and it was their -Peutic for me to write. This is that how you felt writing it such a great question because this was not the case before Jamie was killed. Afterwards. Writing became my therapy in started doing social media. You know I became very prolific on twitter and I considered people twitter became force. My way of getting things out of me and those book just took to another level being able to sit down and think about all of the relationships what they meant to me about my daughter and what hurt lost means to me and others, and what my book really got to think about is people in a very different way because you hear the same things I hear people sock opticians, sock media. And I writing my book and I couldn't come to that conclusion any of these

"I'll be hosting along with some really great guest off of their insight and analysis will do that. From 8 P.m. to 12 A.m. from 8 to 9. We do a preview of night number three. And we'll also recap tonight number to a little bit. And then afterwards from 11 to midnight, we will recap what took place and take a look. Forward to tomorrow, the final night of the convention. So we're re capping what's happened over the course of the past couple of nights. I thought one thing the Democrats really got right. And maybe it was unintentional. This was just, you know. What the whole virtual set up led them to Dio. But it seemed to have worked, and people seem to have really enjoyed it. And that was the roll call vote, which is usually a really boring part of the convention. Where there just going around the arena to all the different, elegant eggs for because you got You know, they've got a record everything because then they do it all because I watch it for the first time in 2016 for both parties. I didn't realize I'm like how labor intensive it was because you got a call on Florida. They've got to say you know the number of votes for giving Bernie or whoever this case, you know Joe Biden. Then there's someone on stage who asked Teo record everything and write it down and make it all official. It's not like you just people think it's like a show. But it's not. This was. I hope they never go back to that. Again way they need to do it From now on. It was really cool because you've got to see different parts of the country. Obviously, Rhode Island stole the show with calamari with calamari now. I guess there was controversy within Rhode Island's because They made calamari to state appetizer. But then Some Rhode Islanders They think that clam based dishes should, of course, the Rhode Island dish and they didn't like the Legislature, elevating Palamar squid, right? Eso promoted squid and not clams. Yes, a big controversy in Rhode Island on a whole lot going on there. I think so. And apparently the chef that was holding the calamari is not a Biden supporter. Now. I think he's like a swing voter, right? I just don't like rich people. He He looked like the type that would say you're going to eat. This column are and you're gonna like it Right now. He is a very ominous look that he had going on there and For Florida. What was that? Those Fred were they Fred Guttenberg, the father of Ah Parkland school shooting victim. I'm not sure where they were, and that was the head of the Florida Democratic Party. Terrie Rizzo was behind him. But It just seems like out of all the spots in Florida that you could highlight beach. Yeah, shall be China. We kind of need people to come down here and go them at this point I didn't get here is the perfect pairing for May. They're castor Mayor Kreismen on ST Pete Beach. Yeah, Sorry, I didn't. I didn't get the choice. And look if I'm trump. This is a no brainer. And you gotta figure Republicans are going to basically do with Democrats did only they're going to try to one up them, which makes sense. They've seen the playbook now and now they can improve upon it. If you're the Trump campaign. And you're doing the roll Call vote and you get to Florida. There's only one thing that you D'oh one option. Guess what it is. Go ahead. The boat parade. Oh, yeah. You gotta have the boat parade, tons of boats out there and you, You zoom in on one, and they do the Florida accounts and all of that stuff. It's got to be the boat parade. That's your thing. In Florida, right? And it's almost made, said Guinness World record last weekend. I know, I know the president might want a highlight mar a Lago or around he's got. Oh, yeah, is that it's got a whole back. You know, you got to go with the boat parade. I guess Democrats couldn't do Disney. I guess that would Ah. That wouldn't have gone over well with the magic kingdom in the background, and Disney wouldn't allow it. Yeah, yeah. Some states I thought had some lame setups. They just missed. It is some states got it right with a beautiful background and everything on it, Then you know some of the Midwestern states. They did what they're supposed to do. You know, you saw cows in the background or whatever Fields? Yeah. Um I had to interject, you know, during the national show as this is going on, from 9 to 11, its commercial free and every so often I gotta interject and let the audience know kind of what's happening. And so I figured once once I saw that Louisiana to main range among that something was going to care. So that's when I parted down. The roll Call vote jumped in kind of the main, then Rhode Island's body and write while we were waiting for Rhode Island. We've got the heads up that that was going to be the whole everything. Yeah, we were waiting for that one. Cindy McCain. I thought that surprised the two big surprises last night on call Big, but it was Cindy McCain coming out and showing the relationship between John McCain and Joe Biden during their time serving together in the Senate. That was one surprised then Colin Powell was the other one. I thought the Cindy McCain video that was Mohr affected Colin Powell. Look, it's him supporting and Democratic presidents. Nothing new At this point it bro Barack Obama in 2008 exactly right, So he's been doing this for a while. I thought the Cindy McCain part was more interesting of the two again surprises in quotation marks, and then finally, we have Dr Jill Biden and she got really solid reviews from everybody from Democrats from Republicans, Everybody, you know, pretty much handsome, good things to say about the speech. What was.

"The best ways is by hitting that contribute button in the top right and giving what you can. Thanks again for your support. Let's get back to the show thing you have a foundation now honoring your daughter. Can you tell us about that? So I have actually a freehold drains movement armed ruinous for. Jamie is our foundation honors. Things that were important to. Jamie life so those would be things like you know. My daughter was a competitive dancer but my daughter also was someone who donated her personal time to kids special needs and two kids who were often bullied because you know they were. The easy carpets. Those are the ones who my daughter always do not four she bullies and sew shoes part of a variety of different groups to ensure that she was there for kids. Like that or kids with special needs some. She used bolger time for these workout programs for kids with different disabilities to my daughter was so we support programs like that. We've also started A scholarship program through the foundation. Fourteen scholarships this year and My will do that again next year. We'll be able to raise the dollar amount and the reason we chose fourteen. My daughter was fourteen when she died. There's three categories so the scholarship was for kids who are going to a traditional four year education. But they're gonNA major in something that is geared towards helping others whether it be occupational therapy which is what my wife does for a living or physical therapy. Which is what my daughter wanted to do or medicine. But you're going to be the professions geared towards helping bothers to get our scholarship. You also need to have a background in community service and because my daughter was a dancer we wanted to one year dances well. The second bucket is a dance scholarship because my daughter was a dancer and those kids also to get it needed to have a background in community service. The third bucket which was really unique. You just don't see understo- of arrests like this is for what we call our kids of all abilities and it was kids with special needs who may not go onto traditional for your education. But they're GONNA go onto a post high school education. Those families are often left destitute because the cost of care we wanted to make sure we were providing some kind of a scholarship for those kids as well so that was the scholarship program that we set up. The arguments for also educates on factors emissions related. To why Jamie's life was cut short. So it does you know through the foundation. I do educate on issues around gun violence and gun safety but for the purposes of advocacy and political. I also set for gun. Safety data is how I go about doing the political advocacy work. The reality is my daughter. Didn't need to die. It was a completely preventable shooting. It happens too often in this country. We see people dying Red Street violence. We see people dying because the suicides. And we see too many instances now these mass shootings weather it beans schools like my daughter or places of worship or Walmart or now even on the highway. You drive on the highway now. I mean look what happened to us. You know as a country. This is something that we can do something about. You know. You'll never stop it completely while we can do a lot to lessen it. And and if anybody wants to know why my remainder of this year is going to be dedicated to electing Joe Biden President and flipping the Senate. Because if we do that gun safety will be done in this country it will get done. We already have. The House would not gonNA lose the house. This is something we can get done and the time is near and I don't intend to foul but will get my daughter back but I will stand after this next election noah there will be other parents who won't be like me because of the work we did. Fred thank you for joining me in these trying times. Thank you for having made saw. These are crazy times. Indeed I think to ask for your perspective as the pandemic of nineteen patients sweeps across the United States with minimal federal dimension as someone who has suffered tremendous loss not just from the use of a weapon war on teenagers at Marjory Stoneman. Douglas is who is someone who has survived multiple tragedies. What is your perspective on the Corona virus a bit of perspective which is different than a lot of other people's because of the loss of my daughter two years ago and even my brother four months before that died from cancer related to nine eleven my perspective on what's happening now now is this is. This is scary. A lot of people are GonNa die and yet my perspective is if we do what we know we need to do is hunkered down and stay in place. We'll get through it and we'll be okay and for most of us life's GonNa Return back to a normal place that surly the way. We remember the way before but we'll get back to living. Our life is virus. He was actually director of emergency medical services for North West Hospital systems the largest hospital system in the state of New York. I still have a lot friends in New York. Who Work in the mountain community. They are struggling. Hostels are older. Well they don't have the supplies and what's frightening is we haven't yet seen the waves of the first responders in healthcare providers. Goer going to end up with this virus. It started so while they're already short-staffed is going to amplify over the next few days because you now have these. There's no way to the no really yet knows how to stop. The spread of the sectors in surface is worn when you're starting to see those first responders that doctors nurses the EMT's the police officers. Listen it is I think as a country will have to come to grips with the failure that brought us here because we had one we had the opportunity to be ahead of this and specific decisions were made not to do that to kind of wash our hands of it and assume hey. Come here add to not prepare. I thank God right now for these governors who are doing everything they can to protect the citizens of their states but we had a failure of leadership out of the White House. That country's GonNa have to come to grips with right. Now is probably not the time to do that. I just hope this White House realizes the failure they had and get ahead of themselves does everything they can to help. The state's governor Cuomo chain had it exactly right yesterday. They are the epicenter right. Now get all this stuff to New York. Another next hotspot. He'll said there. But we gotta get this plan in place guys are helping people write down or the numbers of people who are going to die is going to be something. This country's ever seen before and Republicans have already started dependent from not fighting the virus that causes deadly Code Nineteen infections towards telling their followers. It's time to die for the economy by ending quarantines against public health experts. About how do you see the parallels between Brit Hume's call for grandparents to die for the GOP's inflexible motion of more guns to take more live? I always thought since daughter died. I've made the argument life. They're not I actually fight for the rights to life for those who are living in wild. That was an argument that I used to get loads of pushback on yesterday. If you could wave a magic wand would three actions would you want the trump administration to take regarding gun reform right now that the trump administration the first action? I would ask him to take his lose the NRA's phone number and in doing so. Stop using their message. Start referring to people like me as hating the second amendment or being gun grabbers because that incites violence okay and it makes it impossible to have rational conversation over how to solve this problem so if we were taught me about someone else. I might have had a different. The first step of this particular administration it has to be the first step because every effort every gun violence tragedy a star now saying the right thing until they talked to be all right and then they go of course so lose the phone number. "That conversation because to be honest he only way you're ultimately solve. This problem is going to be bipartisan. It has to include voices. I don't WanNa just assume I have the answers and I want whatever happens to be lasting so it should be a bipartisan messaging. Now the truth is gun. Violence is not a bipartisan issue. Bullets don't know if you're Republican or Democrat when they kill you but the response to it is always hardest which is unfortunate so I would certainly say we need to have that conversation but we have to start off with one goal in mind. How do we lower the gun violence death threat and we can all agree that we have to lower the gun violence death rate than it is? I think we can all agree on useful steps to get that done. What I have found is in one on one conversations there whether you're Republican Democrat. There's always a lot more agreement than there is disagreement when you get to these expanded Bobbins of media messaging. That tends to bring down so I would certainly want to have that kind of a conversation. What do I want this administration to do? Maybe as a first step as a first step. Let's get everyone together on steps that we do agree. Listen let's do a nationwide extreme risk protection order bill. Let's get background checks. Done the idea that this administration can't get in lockstep with ninety. I forget the last number was ninety. One percent or ninety four percent of the American people on saying we should know who's buying weapons so that we make sure we keep them out of. The hands of those who attempt to kill is mind boggling. I think if you're convene members of the Republican Party and the Democrat already in the conversation you can quickly start off by getting agreement on steps. Wipe that was. I say. Go to the hard stuff I I know you're not gonNA get those groups to agree on things like an assault weapons ban but yet we have to be open to having those conversations. We need to do things that need to get the other side to come along with us on magazine capacity. You know and that's one of those things you have to have those hard conversations but we need to do it. The other thing that I firmly believe most of the gun safety bills out there. Right now are forward-looking beaming how you stop people from buying another new gun. Let's background checks. The problem is we already have three hundred million weapons on the streets today that get traded transferred stolen and close acquiring weapons in those methods. Somebody who already knows. They can't legally walk into a store. Biwott and those are the people most likely to use them in violent ways. Here's the problem that same person to walk into any store by the bullets. And so we must deal with ammunition The reason why I'm working so hard on a local Jamie's law which has been initiated is named after my daughter is. I wanted to keep somebody. We already know Jim legally by a gun from walking into the store and and buy ammunition to use actor Josh and the only way to do that is to extend background checks. Dan Munition Gene Islambad. I wanted to ask you about a pair of high profile incidents that happened in DC earlier this year. You were pleasantly escorted out of the state of the Union. Can you tell our listeners while you win and what happened in the state of the Union so Speaker Pelosi is somebody who's really from a hero to me in? I'm thankful to say we've developed a connection because of what I've gone through I mean it's it's bizarre to think of the people who I've got connected to be cost of what happened to my family. I was once just a stupid silly data to kids or husband doing normal stuff. But she's been there for me and she invited me to be at the state of the Union as her guest and while there. I sat through a good part of that speech. My blood was rising especially when he didn't get to a place of talking about violence. The really blaming it on illegals and saying you know talking about how the way to solve violence is steps to basically round them up and get them out. I mean he's he's pretty guy And all I consider thinking was my daughter was killed by teenage American male. Nothing illegal about him except for the fact that you know wasn't illegal but it was unfortunate. He was able to buy his weapon as a teenager. In fifteen on in spite of no red flags as far did not have a red flag law at the time so I was getting really pissed off and I after listening and eventually he will not to other topics by blood pressure came down a bit until he got to that point in the speech where he talked about the second amendment and he ranted enraged that he is gonNA attack the Second Amendment which is under attack all over the country. So it's not it is not under attack. I'm not attacking the second amendment. And he put protection the Second Amendment over above protecting my daughter over and above protecting the other victims of gun violence and I could contain my anger and I simply screamed out nine words. What about victims of gun violence like my daughter? That was all I said it was all I did. In a matter of seconds the police secret service were in asking me to leave. I expected to be Rogo. Once they came out and asked me to got up from my seat I was like okay. I'M GONNA have to leave the building what. I didn't expect to be detained and I was. They immediately. Put me in coughs. They were very nice they. They weren't meaning weren't Roth. They weren't aggressive. But I I was being told I was going to be detained. I wasn't really sure why broke but I was detained. I was brought to the downstairs garage. And then I was put in this. Paddy wagon is horrific mini little jail cell. A metal box of you know that I couldn't see out of. I had no idea where I was being taken. And it was the scariest few moments of my life. I thought I was going to end up at the bottom of the Potomac somewhere. Because let's face it I- antagonists to this administration and I ended up being brought to detention facility a few blocks away. I was told I would be there for hours. Best gated arrested and I asked if I would need an attorney. They said No. I was taken to a wall with one or I didn't have a cell phone is my cell phone was back. In the Speaker's office and eventually One of the police officer who's able to retrieve that brand to me so it wasn so a couple of hours later is the first time was able to call my wife my son which was horrific for them because on February fourteenth two thousand eighteen women through hours of not being able to reach my daughter only to find out we work in ever speak to her again so they were in panic but at some point after she got done ripping off the speech speaker. Pelosi Congressman Deutsche got in touch with the Capitol police and demanded by release. And she said the sergeant at arms to attention facility to come get me. I was expected to be there for the night. And all of a sudden the police officer came and he said you're free to go. The sergeant arms is there waiting for me and brought me back to my hotel and I'll be very thankful to her for the rest of my life. Here's here's the thing I do want to say about that. I was so upset with myself that night for losing your one. The things I've prided myself on is my ability to keep my emotions in check. While taking on these really noxious able in messages. Never not letting my emotions cause me to become the story and it was very very upset with myself until the next day when this country was talking about gun violence because of that moment and if not for that moment that wouldn't have happened this entire country the next day and I don't say this you know because I won a any accolades but there was that Hashtag I you know. I think stand with fire is Dan with Fred. Rather than focusing on the obnoxiousness of that speech this country was rallying around that moment and they were saying to anyone who would listen. We care about this issue and we care about what he did because it could have been lost. Our daughter it could have been are so while I was very upset with myself that night the next day. I could not have been more inspired by what happened in this country. And it's like that simply ensure you're I don't stop what I'm doing until we get this done.

The Forgotten Ver- Gutenberg who's Roja Activism for gun reform now began two years ago with an unthinkable mass tragedy. School shooting where his beloved daughter? Jamie was killed. I have a an morning asthmatic. Thing that goes on. That eventually wears out. I've had for years so but my but my hope is that forget what certain elected people are telling everybody to do to go out and stay home. Stay away from others. Hunker down in place for those who by Guyana have the fortune of good fortune of knowing people in New York is as bad as you here and it's going to go in waves across this country. Some joss stay safe. It's easy to do. Stay home What's happening in New York right now? In the hospitals there is a nightmare. Because what my brother wants. Denver living in New York running. He was actually director of emergency medical services for North West Hospital systems the largest hospital system in the state of New York. I still have a lot friends in New York. Who Work in the mountain community. They are struggling. Hostels are older. Well they don't have the supplies and what's frightening is we haven't yet seen the wave of the first responders in healthcare providers. The fireman also dare getting sick and that's going to amplify so we haven't even seen by any measure the worst of New York and it's going to come to a town near you sue. They were launching is masks now as in organising that for for people to so masks at home we don't have it. I've made the argument kroll life. They're not is. I actually fight for the rights to life for those who are living in wild. That was an argument that I used to get loads of pushback on yesterday. I put out a tweet that said more down more twenty four two thousand twenty as the day. The Republican Party officially walked away from the right to life message. They officially said we want people to die to save the economy. He Republican Party affected yesterday. Should never ever ever claim to be right to life. Party belongs to guys like you and me that belong to anyone who is fighting for the right to life of those who are living with the Republican party can now claim is claiming small slice of saying we are anti choice. Okay but they're not right to life that right to light. It belongs to people like us who are fighting for the health and wellbeing of those walking streets to keep them free of gun violence to take care of their health. Care to make sure you're getting the supplies they need in this fires- where right to life we wanna keep others alive whether we know there were not so. Yesterday is the day. The Republican Party gave all walked away from the right to life. Message find out more about the candidates. Twenty twenty my new book series of Voter Guides Author Bike Working Report Grant Stern. Now at the link inside is episodes notes at grant stern dot com or your local barnes and noble. Thank you for your support. Let's get back to the show. If you could wave a magic wand would three actions. Would you want the trump administration to take regarding gun reform right now? Being that the trump administration the first action I would ask him to take his lose the NRA's phone number and in doing so. Stop using their message. Start referring to people like me as hating the second amendment or being gun grabbers because that incites violence okay and it makes it impossible to have rational conversation over how to solve this problem so if we were taught me about someone else. I might have had a different. The first step of this particular administration it has to be the first step because every effort every gun violence tragedy a star now saying the right thing until they talked to be at all right and then they go off course so lose the phone number. That's number one number two convene a conversation of those who wanNA attention not do as much on this issue with those who want to whether you bring in a guy like me or others who are two roic in this effort to talk about this issue..

O. Modelo without saying the name trump right right on election day two thousand sixteen trump's approval ratings with blacks was eight or nine percent depending upon which survey looked at what is it now we got four pulls right here right right here which all the black voters as of today right now approve of Donald Trump by thirty plus percent in all four thirty plus percent now that is a jag gun this leap and as the Democrats are ready to drink Drano when they're this why would there be this massive swaying to support Donald Trump of something that moves that quickly and that high in just a few years we all know the answer why and this is something again that really has to be affecting the left in a in a scary way so we're going to we're going to play with it a little bit too because it's so much fun couple a great guest today as I mentioned tomorrow will be at the world expo and when we do that I I planned the show rather loosely out there because it can sort of be anything can happen day you never lose those going to pop up and say can I be on of significance and importance of water to Congress people people from the assembly local county leaders do you know a lot of it dealing with bag I mean that's why were there and that's the area that we live in so it's always a fun one lot of people looks like the weather will be nice and sunny but you know some about that you know at their it's so cold it's so cold and I do the whole show outside standing for the most part of it it's a monster I used to do it up stairs it's actually this two story display where I'm at and the bottom is all in cover but the top is covered so you couldn't see me that's why the movie downstairs and upstairs I had coffee I am eaters but Hey I'm brave eleven downstairs for about ten years now so I will see a lot of U. "So last night and I don't know how I feel about this the president's talking about tray writes and one of the dads who lost his daughter parkland if the guy that's always the outspoken one jumps salt makes a scene turned around and is escorted out of the state of the union address on one hand I I I I can't even imagine what it's like to lose a child but at the same time when you put yourself in a position to become an activist I think you kind of become fair game what did you think of all one of the parkland dad standing up and kind of making a scene during the president's address yeah and you know you have to give someone like that a little bit of a break when they've gone through a tragedy like that at the same time what was he reacting to he was reacting to the president's simply saying we respect second amendment rights in this country he wasn't being any more specific on any particular gun control measure that people like that German are out espousing in pushing for he just said we respect second amendment rights why would that set you off what it if you had a tragedy that resulted from police waiting for a warrant before they kicked in someone's door would you be upset if someone said we respect the Fourth Amendment of the United States constitution it didn't make any sense if it's important remember to there are other of family members of from parkland that are row two way street have made their voices known as well absolutely and and we see them and I forget the gentleman's name actually was very active on Twitter saying look the NRA didn't kill my daughter of a rifle didn't kill my daughter a deranged lunatic killed my daughter in what we don't want to do is take second amendment rights away from law abiding citizens reaction to that and that's I think a powerful

"Matter where you are right now it is okay I will stay on top of that will let you know when when central have re opens Kelly we we were unless we actually talked about on the you and I both saw this event of coming and we'll wonder girl was gonna be like but Fred Guttenberg's us get more grad class of eighty eight he lost his daughter a fourteen year old the in the Marjory Stoneman high school shooting down in Florida he was in town yesterday it actually again today I think it's gonna be some state officials many as a message on on he he's worried about animal we once the Congress to pass a federal law requiring background checks to buy ammo spoke to mark my hall of yesterday before you did this get more parents and one thing that really bugs me and it it no matter where you stand on the issue itself is the the reception is received I get a lot of pretty incredible we horrible stuff you know I just thought he says like threats in in on death threats and stuff and I just thought you understand if you you think he's full of it you don't like his position you want to lobby against his position or encourage him to change his mind but just people just live death threats and other nasty stuff without even thinking about anymore is just very discouraging guy lost his daughter I know I mean come on have some compassion so I don't know I just I just find that the the desk the reflex action for some idiots now no matter what a celebrity says something only death threat against you know I saw something yesterday quote that was so appropriate it said if you hate someone simply because their opinion differs from yours you are the problem can your dad more he says look at that first of all he's the second amendment supporters that he has guns himself and he says that he doesn't feel like this kind of a thing recording background checks to buy ammo would be infringing on your rights who have nothing to worry about however my hope is I'm going to keep your kid or someone you love for being the next victim of gun violence so again just the just discouraging when people I think sometimes out of their passion lose perspective this is another one where I am I was just delighted to see that's the only thing is I wish that he got more money but the father of a boy killed in the sandy hook shooting in Connecticut has won a lawsuit against the guy who is co author of a book nobody died in sandy hook and he was accused the father was of the dead child among other things of claiming that he'd fake copies of his son's death certificate well you have a whole sandy hook sandy hook hoax thing is it despicable and you feel for these families I mean they're almost there being victimized again they have what they lost a first grader and so yeah he's one half million dollars to the people who wrote the book this is second lawsuit I think that is one two yeah the although the first author I guess he settled out of court and so this guy yeah so good in any says this guide Posner says that the eight that the talk in referring to the coal author that he's getting the settlement from supposedly he has a right to believe it's in who've never happened he has a right to express his ignorance this award however for further illustrates the difference between the right of people like Mister fester to be wrong and the right of victims like myself and my child to be free from defamation because ultimately they are private citizens they're not public figures they happen to be a victim of a very public crime but that does not make them a public figure and immune to the laws that apply to people who are you know give the libel and slander laws yeah in the co authored a book says he's outraged by the the by the damages and he will appeal it so we move on there will be a while before this guy gets any money if you if he does receive any one of the thing we thought there regarding kids and safety the there's been a lot of talk about it since the residence in late September the homecoming game Troy in green tack after the game the kids did leave the field but not too far away to McDonald's and whose of St seventy kids had to be dispersed by the cops what a bad feelings between Albany in Troy apparently so the question who has been for the last couple weeks what I can do if anything about this upcoming Troy Albany football game is scheduled for seven o'clock tomorrow night and they made the decision now and I think it's a good when they're moving it to one o'clock Saturday I think it's very smart both apartments that both trying Albany police department's work together with the district since and they all fell it was in the best interest of everyone to move it to Saturday were a it's lighter be it's in the middle of the day there may be fewer people there you know so it's just a safer decision all around and to me it seems like a no brainer so there it so that game is gonna be a Saturday instead at one o'clock Chuck Kelly eleven come into the.

"From NPR news this is All Things Considered I'm also Chang and a Mary Louise Kelley guns and how to stop gun violence in the US were front and center and last night's democratic debate with former congressman better Rourke of Texas indoor sing mandatory buybacks of assault style weapons and delivering one of the more memorable lines of the night hell yes we're gonna take your A. R. fifteen your A. K. forty seven. other candidates talked about expanded background checks about an assault weapons ban about closing loopholes in existing gun laws all of which have been before Congress all of which have stalled in Congress where the gun industry holds great sway well we're gonna hear now from one member of Congress who says he has bipartisan support for his gun legislation Florida Republican Marco Rubio he's just re introduced a bill that would nudge states towards adopting red flag laws and senator Rubio is on the line from Florida welcome well thank you from so I said you reintroduce this because you first introduced this proposal more than a year ago right after dark when shooting it didn't go anywhere what has changed that makes you believe it may get traction now doctor unfortunate have more these tragedies and that as we look at them all these tragedies are different in the sense that the motivation behind it might be different but let him to that point but the one thing a large percentage of all these mass shootings have in common is that the killer who carried them out the people around them knew they were dangerous but there's nothing you can do about it in essence until they commit a crime there's no way they can be arrested and judicata that doesn't show up in the background check system so these are people that were passed a background check but some a lot of people around them knew that they were a problem but they had no tools to stop them so the two you're proposing that red flag flies just briefly explain what allow police to confiscate your weapon if a judge has ruled you might pose a danger to yourself or to other are what well or already have one fifteen states now do and what it would allow someone to do in the case of of the ones that floating around a long time and we're going to law enforcement say look this is a person number close to I live with a member of our family I think they're going to hurt themselves I think they're gonna hurt other people you would then be able to take that before a judge and who could issue a preliminary injunction to prevent you from buying and and to remove any weapons you have but what is the standard of proof even. saying I think you know my partner my friend's gonna hurt someone is is awfully squishy what what has your shopping on a red flag yeah to get the permit Jack has to be clear and convincing event at a high standard because you're taking away a constitutional right sure this has been the big criticism though is you know if red flag was that the due process questions that it I could just decide I don't like my boss I don't like my neighbor I can make up some accusation that they're acting crazy and suddenly their weapon gets used yeah and and so we make it a crime to do the opposite falsely accuse people these things and that's why that they have to go to court and standard after behind there have to be penalties for fall for using it as a weapon against somebody but until you commit a crime you don't really have this tool available to you to stop them. I have been wanting to interview your senator sense parkland and specifically sense that CNN forum that was a few days after parkland. where a lot of parents who had lost their children were there including a man named Fred Guttenberg his fourteen year old daughter Jamie had died I want to play a little bit of that and then ask you about it he he was asking you about an assault weapons ban if I believe that law would have prevented this from happening I would.

"Bipartisan support for his gun legislation Florida Republican Marco Rubio he's just re introduced a bill that would nudge states towards adopting red flag laws and senator Rubio is on the line from Florida welcome well thank you. so I said you reintroduce this because you first introduced this proposal more than a year ago right after the park when shooting it didn't go anywhere what has changed that makes you believe it may get traction now Dr Porter we've had more these tragedies and that as we look at them all of these tragedies are different in the sense that the motivation behind it might be different but let him to that point but the one thing a large percentage of all these mass shootings have in common is that the killer who carried them out the people around them knew they were dangerous but there's nothing you can do about it nascent until they commit a crime there's no way they can be arrested and judicata that doesn't show up in the background check system so these are people that were passed a background check but some a lot of people around them knew that they were a problem but they had no tools to stop them so the two you're proposing the red flag flies just briefly explain what allow police to confiscate your weapon if a judge has ruled you might pose a danger to yourself or to other I what well or already have one yeah fifteen states now do and what it would allow someone to do in the case of of the ones that floating around a long time and we're going to law enforcement say look this is a person down very close to our live with a member of our family I think they're going to hurt themselves I think they're gonna hurt other people you would then be able to take that before a judge who could issue a preliminary injunction to prevent you from buying and and to remove any weapons you have but what is the standard of proof even saying I think you know my partner my friend's gonna hurt someone is is awfully squishy what but what we're showing the one about flag yeah to get the permit Jack has to be clear and convincing event at a high standard because you're taking away a constitutional right sure this has been the big criticism though is you know if red flag was that the due process questions that it I could just decide I don't like my boss I don't like my neighbor I can make up some accusation that they're acting crazy and suddenly their weapon gets used yeah and and so we make it a crime to do that to falsely accuse people of these things that's why that they have to go to court and standard after behind there has to be penalties for for. for using it as a weapon against somebody but until you commit a crime you don't really have this tool available to you to stop.
