"The the cohen fan perception was back in the day when when most my formative myongji views of things and just watching this thing well hang on this is basically how all the all the hottest scifi stories starts with a weird off kilter episodes way. No one really has. It's usually pretty much just left to his crew. Maybe maybe a couple of other characters. And you have this way of what. The heck is going on episodes at the start of awful lot. Details station. the hundred that's the genealogy of it as substance which ago did the same thing but that was what he was used to handling battling even script sing and then share chevy lifted the idea from there it certainly means we were able to get away with it. People wouldn't say what the hell's this pay my money to the just the regular cast guests. I i still think the the Spooky atmosphere works while enough for me in that first episode and it gives the story lift i go into the what should be equally fantastical but often fields prozac world of land fiction buoyed by the genuinely mysterious opening so yes. I think we're lucky. In hindsight we look stoves with that episode. It makes he makes the next couple of people. Total now i mean talking about what Rework the motivated to do at the beginning of episode. One stroke to start at the story proper. They've also as was having to edit it to cut into the news opening. They've had to almost immediately make some changes to compensate the loss of frazer hines. It must take four five minutes over. That cost the episode dealt with changing jamie's faces faces. It's not even a very long as a start with hundred what we lost. I'm assuming wasn't anything particularly vital. Must be that's where the preamble to the the beta would've would've got us from the domain as into into land fiction the gap stenius about the magnetic stole. Whatever maybe that's where that winds but of course it would already being rewritten. They would have had a finished version britain in go into the studio and then re-routed it during that last week when they knew they didn't have fraser since the legend chickenpox or something you couldn't you couldn't be in the episode although actually using it for fairly i survived trumka. Didn't they refill. They filmed that stuff. The next week and edited. Cut it back in some conspiracy theory. You were already confused me over. The jamie scene was already in the that -rageous scripts before. Yeah i don't know. I don't think that necessarily any face swapping going on..

"When The last pop con I got to talk to Why am i blanking on his name. Back from asia shield. Yeah yeah. I was able to grab for like a minute. And a half. Because that's what he had available but then like Like popcorn fort wayne which wasn't really heavily attended Actually afforded me better. So i was able to sit down for like have to look at. It was a long conversation. It was probably like fifteen twenty minutes. Probably i think conversation with a very boston. Oh cool and i asked people. I knew i was gonna talk to me. I actually arranged it with his handler the day before. And so i ask people like you know your questions for him in like we didn't talk anything about rocky horror because that's what people would expect it like your experience with with with williams right really d williams is like you talk about the stuff. That's not the thing that they're like royalty known for and they're likely to open up hearing the same questions over and over and over and over so it's like you know if you're if you're if you're if you're doing ever doing a press junket it's like they're they're all day in the here the same stuff over and over i. I had a class in college. Once when i thought i was going to be a newspaper reporter and it was like have you ever do entertainment. News find out some other questions because they're going to be bored and you're you're not going to get very very good material but yeah i like you like what you're saying rachel is i've noticed like if i can go up to to someone at a con and say oh you know i have a podcast or you know. I co host a podcast. Could i get a bumper or you know a short interview or something. I've never been able to get an interview like going up and talking to you. Know colin baker or palm again or even bake mignano. Or who else have i gotten. Bumpers for There's the i feel like there's been a whole bunch the been able to get and just because they say You know we're fans we have a podcast and they're just so happy to do it when you ask them. Even the ones that are like the voice actors they charged for that kind of thing which is fine. But it's like you just kind of like. I've come a long way from being tongue. Tied around nicholas briggs and frazer. Hines i mean other than david tennant but you know he's a special cases but yeah i just i just kinda feel like i have a lot more confidence and not just with your conventions just kind of with life in general and you know work and things like that. I mean it. Our libraries start starting. Its own podcast and i volunteered to be on the work groups like well. I've done this for so long. I might as well to lend my experience. And what what. I've what i've been able to do so know even just in that realm of hey you know. This is something we've accomplished. This is something that is you know something to brag about not even told one of my coworkers. And she's like oh. Is it up on. I an apple podcasts. I'm gonna look it up. And you know she went back and started looking through our backlog or as far back as as apple shows like. Oh you talked about john williams. I'm going to start there as like. Wow that was actually a while ago but yeah go ahead. Yeah so it's like it's just you know it's just kind of cool. What what's what's happened because we've been doing this and you just me personally. I'm sure you get you other ladies can think of some things that are like yeah. This has happened directly. Because i you know we we do this We have a lot of fun with it. How about panels guys on panels. Oh yeah be. Rachel i i yeah when it comes to like vengeance stuff i i tend to jump in with with both feet especially as i've gotten more comfortable with the con experience. So yeah i. Will you know either volunteer to be on someone's panel. You know specially if someone i know and they're like hey i'm doing this topic and Yeah absolutely so doing a A panel on Podcasting related panel for The here now festival. Which is a whole so i got i are are it's gonna be me and Brandon peters and the other gentleman's name whose name is also brandon. That i i don't know him very well with brandon the up. His name is brandon to though But russell mcgee who I don't know if you know rob But he works for big finish among other things. so he's He's been working with the the the hearing office for for several years and so he wanted to do a podcasting related panel and acid a bunch of us if we would do it. So yeah. that's so cool episode cool. Yeah actually one of our shows One best audio drama at here now a couple of years ago there with us for a short bit but Yeah it was awesome. It was awesome. It was right when they were with us to and they they decided they want to go off on their own and they got picked up by stitcher as an exclusive and then got jumped by stitcher because citrus of. Oh you don't have enough followers enough. We're trying to hear the platform that helps them gets followers right. So but yeah they wanna like best best audio drama or science fiction audio drama. I can't remember but it was super cool super cool to get that Just like a couple of years ago. We submitted for a bunch of any popcorn and we won. I think three or four categories You know which is a love it love it and some the five ish fan girl. Some hardware here. That's worry finalist. Several years ago in a best artwork. Show rick i think it was quite interesting. Category yeah so. I mean we didn't then that's not one that i submitted this for. I don't think concert work. Yeah it's like when they go to. They did ounces or like you know. These are the finalists in that category. And we were one of like. Oh i did not know that. Go go us somebody. Somebody likes us enough to nominate. So yeah that's cool not only nominate but we narrowed it down. Yeah we were in the final cut so very cool now rachel. You've done stuff with us. Did you ever do any of our panels. I can't remember. I don't yes. I did the when we were. You did the like.

"To something who episode forty three. I'm talking again with chris. Chapman a man of many talents but among them is putting together. These fantastic documentaries for the doctor blu-ray collections. The last time we talked chris it was it was pretty much the start of the pandemic some sometime in in march last year. And i i mean. I guess at that point that the impact was being felt in the uk. So i suppose a some degree of mouthy starts to resume have you fair to him. Has it been for you. And it's been busy which it is it's i. I think we'll certainly personally been quite lucky. I've seen a lot of people in my industry have have a difficult time and and i hope that changes is certainly starting to change very quickly. But i've personally had a very busy lockdown kind of went from cancelling doctor who shoots that was very to shoot to being employed in country file for year doing doctor. Who in the background running out to all born when i heard grabbing frank skinner when i could and going and filming restaurant in december about the only week possibly get silvester mccoy to sit at a table with bonnie langford and several. So it's been kind of nonstop in quite a pleasing way. And i kind of i wouldn't have liked to have seen what my lockdown would have been like without. I think if i'd been unable to work would have probably been adopt time as i'm sure it has been lots people. So now it's been it's being okay. And where gradually shifting back to normal in terms of filming. I think it's just made us all very conscious particularly on the who've range of of how precious the people we phone with our. Nobody wants to be the person that goes in and kills. Frazer hines wipes out as mccoy or something like that so it makes us very. We'll always trying to avoid that. Even in peacetime it's made us acutely aware of how fragile and precious the people that we were without definitely. Yeah now i. I definitely got the impression that you were busy from from twitter feet and a similar story for me really in that very different line of work now at a broadcast transmission company And sort of light. It really but nonetheless very very busy but yeah it. It seems to be like that. I mean people seem to have either been flat out or had nothing to do and i think it's been a very unequal experience as a result. But yeah i'm glad glad glad to hear that might have to keep going and of course now award winning you may otherwise but the doctor who cooked revisited winning the award last summer i think yeah. Thank you now. That was a delicious surprise. Me because i vented doctor who talks low television society awards before when i lived up in the northeast and and we never go anywhere with really because i think ultimately the joy these things is that made for such a niche audience. We can of evelyn that but you show that to a not we and the of care. What is this what is this. Why haven't you write this for a general audience and answer normally. We got nowhere..

"It's a very low bar to over. Overtake or at least at least superman lex luther in. Let's just put it that way. Yes te yes it does have that lori web plays arthur alice mr olis' and climate polit. I wanted to mention because he plays the chancellor. What are the head time. Lords that are introducing the story but he actually appeared as a time lord in the war games presuming. It's the exact same time. Lord what they wanted. The three time lords that was responsible for war forcing the second doctor to generate into third doctor. Jon pertwee in that story and now here he is in charge of the whole deal trivia so the script was originally supposed to feature all three doctors equally. But of course william hartnell was too ill to be able to play the full role as envisioned in sadly hurdle died two years later after the story. Nine hundred seventy five at the age of sixty seven so it's kind of disturbing that we've heard note died sixteen years after my current age. So her for that right little another reminder of mortality that seems to be permeating the conversation today. I guess at least before we started the production team plan for frazier hines to reprise the role of jamie mckernan alongside the second doctor and interestingly also have a romance with joe however frazer hines was not available due to his work on the soap opera at the time dale firm and much of the role that it was originally intended for javy was reassigned to sergeant benton. So i'm sure. Jeff levine was happy that he got a few extra lines in this story. Exactly i was. I was thinking the same thing rank. Okay well you know at least for one pleasant see i got more scenes. I got right lines out of it. Yeah so it's next band available. In this case it was sergeant benton right to try to the idea of jamie appearing though the production team even tried to write a cameo for him in the last scene calling the second doctor back to his own time line but even that was scrapped because of frazer hines entail commitments. At least try to get him but it'll work out sadly then turns up really quick cameo later on in the five doctors so little disappointing but at least it got to be in the two doctors with Patrick troughton in baker. Aero interestingly enough. Also wendy padbury is character zoe harriet. you know jamie's fellow companion for the second doctor was also considered a return..

Doctor Who: The Faceless Ones review – a murderous Who-dunnit comes alive

"The recent. You know kind of low budget animation. That they've been doing the more cost effective animation. I should say and thankfully we it was released in twenty twenty and finally have a complete story so this is one of the things on my to do list that i wanted to get to as soon as possible when i was making the new schedule. So this story written by david ellis and now the hulk or zydeco the incredible malcolm hulk who wrote a bunch of notable stories from the patrick troughton in jon pertwee eras including will. Hey the war games. Patrick crowds final story the celerion. The first appearance of this larry ins ambassadors of death which was really cool story that we talked about here it also the seat devils a fun story with the master that we haven't talked yet so that's one of those that hopefully we'll get to at some point here on next up. This was directed by jerry mill. This was the eighth serial of doctor who season four nineteen sixty seven starring. Patrick troughton as second doctor. Unida wills as poly right. Michael craze as been jackson in. This is betty polly's last story by the way. And frazer hines as jimmy mcrae. Mid who at the end of the story gets a promotion to main companion after benn polly Exit the tartus closing out the way of heart once and for all so jesse. I know that this is probably your first time watching the story. I'm guessing david your thoughts about it. So i yeah and i'm gonna have a couple of questions we'll get you that i assume you're going to cover in trivia but just in case you want yeah So i settled down to watch this Linda was out of. Linda was spending the night with her sister. Kaya in a many birthday celebration. And so i watched the first dealer yes. I watched the first three on friday. Night and i watched the remaining three on saturday And i enjoy the. I enjoy the last three a lot more than i did. The first three now. I think part of that may have been. I was a little tired. It was today but also think the first three were a lot of setup. Yeah in once the next three you got really a lot of the story and was really well done so overall. I'm pretty happy with this one. I'm glad we got to see it. Yeah and And i'm looking forward to talking to you about it but my question is In you've probably covered this before. But i have slept since then. Why was so much of patrick. Totten's episodes lost and specifically about this. Well there was a purge by the bbc to essentially make space as i understand it and in the process they junked a bunch of old doctor. Who's they didn't think they needed them anymore. In their infinite stupidity and a lot of them were were episodes. From the william heart. Oh and patron eras you know there was in levin and some others that had managed to recover some of those over time because this was believed in the seventies and since then you know there's been a lot of effort by fans to try and recover episodes which have either been somehow scattered to the winds across the entire globe and or just play lost in this story. They'd only managed to recover episodes one in three. That are returned to the bbc archives. Because hey now they want to keep them a what. I what i find interesting. Charles is the seventies relatively speaking. I mean i love. Lucy had been in syndication. So you think people would have realized the Cordao yet and the importance and also. I know that they talked about that. Many of the early tonight show episodes back with johnny carson. The same thing they just re. They didn't keep them. They did because they didn't think they're reporting. And i remember years ago. I talked to someone and he was british. And he's like yeah doctor who it's it's just the it's just a minor kid show. Yeah i'm sure that was the ski. Oh executive thinking yes the super geniuses as wylie coyote super genius exact who made this horrible decision probably thought. Well it's just a kid show doesn't matter you know they. They won't miss it. We've already done Because back in the day dear listeners you used to have summer reruns until you would show an episode twice and and it was kinda done. So i'm sure they were thinking okay. We've already had a repeat time to move on. It's just it's it was just a really bad unfortunate thing that happened to the show because you know like a lot of classic moments are just now lost in presumably. A lot of these are never going to be available in their original format. Now they're going to be like stories like this. That would probably be reconstructed through animation. Or maybe whatever happens in the next ten years technology wise that they could be recreated so now and i guess they had audio right so now the audio either fans have the audio or someone in so that's for steps are recreating it. Yeah thankfully now though. The upside that. I should mention was that through the efforts of fans a lot of kids at home you know. They had their home tape cassette recorders right. Or whatever you know recording real

"All right. Also, Wendy Padbury doesn't appear in episode three. This was another case where one of the doctor who actors lead actors decided to take a holiday. Inn. Bails out of the story for a complete episode. Last time we talked about it was William Hartnell on this story Wendy Padbury. Back. Then I guess John Charles Maybe. You can tell me did they not have like filming seasons like right now you film like seven eight months in a row then you're on hiatus. Filmed fifty, two weeks a year, and just you had to take vacation. Dreams an episode, a week. Okay I think. It was a good if I'm not mistaken like almost like nine months out of the year. Can kind of like you know did they do over here in the states? But but with more episodes so you had like one episode of week. So, so every so often you'd have to like somebody wants to take a break I guess. Okay. So we just write them out of the story is a little odd nowadays yes, and here's a fun little trivia bit Sally Faulkner Skirt kept getting blown up the helicopter sees you know when she was climbing the rope ladder from all the the wind and whatnot. So to avoid the same thing happening to him. Frazer. Hines. 'cause he's wearing a kilt as Jamie. So so to prevent that he. Apparently remembered reading somewhere that the queen of England used lead weights sewn into the hem of her skirt stop this from happening to her when she was on a helicopter. What have you so apparently the guy who dresses fraser for the show. He was a fisherman. So we got a hold of some of his lead weights from probably his tackle box and so them into his killed. So just thought that was kind of interesting. Very when I read that I was very impressed. I'm sure there were a lot of disappointed frazer hines fans that did not get to see his bare bum in that one. I guess we'll never know for sure if he's wearing underwear under that kilt, which is leave their to everybody's imagination very well said. John did I miss anything while I was crossing off the ones that you going to you`re Saying as as I was listening here So the the invasion was actually test story for the more earthbound stories that they would adopt later on in Jon Pertwee's era again that when their You said Wendy Padbury was on vacation or on holiday. Fracture hines was actually on a schedule break throughout episode eight. So they knew that was going to happen. So what they did was when they film the the beginning with the charts landing, they also filmed the ending with them leaving. So they wouldn't have to worry about him being there for not being able to shoot it. Nice. Yes. Those those pretty interesting Peter Halliday. He also did the voice of the cyber director in this one. Did couple couple of Cyberman as well. Let's see. What else do I have on here Oh when does lot of voice work for monster did yeah. I. Because there's a lot. Yeah, there's a ton. But let's see I. Think it's maybe the last one I got here. When Jamie and the doctor going up the elevator shaft and they pass by the Kilroy was here yeah. Frazer hines actually wrote that on there as a joke. You're filming and then he said, well, if it's a manmade, obviously somebody's going to somebody's going to write something like that on their slay just decided to leave it. Yeah. Now, what does it wasn't the whole cure I can worry was here thing wasn't that something they did World War Two. Is. kind of like a goof among soldiers if I'm not mistaken. I I don't know I. I've never researched it. I didn't know if anybody knew that at the top of their head and so just. Just a little curious I guess right. Moving on since I had nobody seems to know including me. All, right. Three topics today. So, number one, let's talk about. Patrick Trout Nar second doctor. The Brigadier Corporal Benton Not Sergeant Benton and United Nations and telling Task Force. Units making their debut. So Jesse. First before we get into the topic. Were you surprised that this was the very first unit story that I'd I sprung on you. I was a little bit because you know we had brigadier. Brigadier month or bringing. A thing and so we were like Oh. Wait that that's kind of how did that not make our on vk share month? Yes it was. It was a really pleasant surprise You know what was in I'm make a point here in a minute, but the other thought I was interesting is. Last week, we had an episode Space Museum that ended up being a decent story, but it had it had a very important. You know for the mythos of doctor who right we talked about that last week this one you could make the argument. We have another almost bigger mythos of unit and how and this is almost as you guys talk about a pilot for when the third doctor happened like you know they, they changed i. Remember when they were doing the fiftieth anniversary You know they actually talked about a lot of ways. The third doctor was a brand new show in a lot of different ways of. So I was very happy to see the brigadier very happy to see unit That was a nice reveal because I didn't know it. So the two people you know like, oh, they're spies and no, they're the good guys there's been watching. That was nice. That great scene. where the doctor in Jamie. are kind of getting cornered by these pseudo men in black and. I love this moment where like the doctor just kind of kind of just resigns himself to being captured and he sits down in the street and start to dealing out cards. Like. He has a deck of playing cards. START SCATTERING THEM OUT WAITING Just to kill time for like all of. Five seconds before they show up in grabbed him. But it's still. Shows just a very funny and it just shows how how brilliant Patrick Troughton was as the doctor just a great character moment I thought. Yes. So so let's get into this a little bit this like I said, this is the very first appearance of unit. John when you watch this story for the first time.

"Again everyone. Welcome back to next up everywhere that doctor who podcast on what are your co host Charles Cakes bag in the Tartus ready to talk some more classic doctor who with my wonderful partner in time and Dallas Cowboys football suffer. Jesse Jackson. Jesse. I'm Greg. Charles. Yeah this Sunday it's The big. Cowboys Browns You know the doctor who bowl except you and I never make any bets or anything no way. Yes. I will. I will bet that my team loses how's that? The cowboys are one weird offs onside kick away from being three. We are not feeling very optimistic right now somehow the browns are two and one I have no idea how that happened, but it did so we'll see what happens but on Sunday but anyway I just thought I'd mention that because since our two teams are playing this coming weekend you know so for for all two of you that that actually you know watched doctor who an watch football Yes I just I. Just thought share that. So here episode two Oh two, we are going to be talking the invasion and thankfully joining us to talk about this. Great Great Classic Story from the Patrick Nara is one of our favorites, special guests, companions. So glad he's back. please. Welcome back to next up everywhere John tackes everybody. Thanks guys. I'm so happy to be talking about the story today. This is one of my all time favorites. Yes. That's something that I can't remember did you suggest this one or did I suggest this one? You wanted to be a part of it? I. Couldn't remember I think I saw it on the was still on there wasn't wasn't a highlighted off there. So it was like I I wanted to jump on this one. All right. So you snag this one you're eager. So that's good because that means. I think we're in for a great discussion because we've got people. I know I'm enthused about it. John's obviously enthused about it in by. What Jesse was talking about just a little bit before we started recording. He's enthusiastic about this one I am I am ready to talk. This is this is good, I? Think this is GonNa be a great story too big story because, hey, this is kind of the first appearance of unit on doctor who I mean. We had seen the brigadier before in the web fear. Even. Though, at that time, he was just what what? Colonel Bridge Stewart I think so and. So you got a promotion and he got himself a nice new task force and we also get the first appearance of. Corporal. Benton not Sergeant Benton play but of course by the Great John Levin who talk about here shortly but this is a big deal and we get to return to the Cyberman and a lot of great stuff. So let's run this down. So obviously the story the invasion written by Derrick Sherwin who previously wrote the mind robber the previous story to this one and is credited by terrance dicks as being the creator of the time lords in Patrick Trautmann's final story the. Word. Games. So thought that was cool and directed by Douglas Canfield who actually makes an appearance in the story as the guy who gives the doctor Zoe and Jamie a lift to London from from where they had been dropped off in that nice cow pasture in the so is the third serial season six, nine, hundred, Sixty, eight, starring, of course, Patrick Trout and as the six excuse me the second doctor. I don't know why can't talk tonight Frazer Hines as Jamie mcraven and Wendy Padbury. Zoe heriot and I believe I know we I. Think we've talked wargames before with you Jesse but I think this is only your second time talking zoe here on the podcast she did not seem familiar. Though. We have done a couple of episodes with Jamie. And the doctor. So and then we've talked many times I'm a huge outlander fan. So Jamie always has a warm place in my heart because of the outlander connection. Yeah. Exactly and I've had the fortune to meet both Frazer Hines in Wendy. Padbury not too long ago here. In Columbus when they attended origins I, think it was last year. I'm not mistaken and it got there. And I got their autograph and they were very lovely people and I believe I talked about how bad I felt for them because they kind of got shafted by origins by being stuck in a very far away upper level. And whether they weren't able to kind of bring in the, you know the the foot traffic to help make them some money for their trip. I think I shared the story too but it's worth repeating my very first comic Palooza in Houston D- he was there and I had not watched any classic who at the time this was before we had done next up everywhere and so I didn't take time to go meet him 'cause I didn't know who he was and the next year by then we had done the podcast than Vaud with the doctor who show runner and I was able to do a couple of interviews with actors, and that's one of my big regrets is i. wish I had known. Because not only would have loved to meet him but I would have loved to done the interview and talked about it and So yeah, I I I'm very glad that you got to meet him. He does seem like an absolutely great person and a great ambassador for the show and how about you John Have you been able to meet either Frazer Hines or Wendy not frazer hines. But I've met Wendy back in ninety one at one of the Chicago Conventions. How cool is a long time ago but yet shoes shoes absolute sweetheart yes she says she was lovely when I met her so I have nothing but. Great things to say about both of them they were very, very kind especially given the rather stressful situation that they were going through. So. but they were very nice to me in the process. So I is I'm very appreciative of that. All right guess cast this time. Of course, we have the Great Nicholas Courtney returning as now newly promoted Brigadier Left Bridge Stewart's and John Levine as Corporal John Benton..

"And it was good the colors as well. Also I mean Jon Pertwee was a big puddles of my childhood because he voiced one of my favorite cartoon characters growing up which was spotty from the cartoon series super. Tad's who I think you guys familiar with. I'm in a little bit familiar. I know we did Worzel Gummidge in the UK but was not aware that he did Super Ted and so I love that every time I get to hear his voice. It's just wonderful when it comes to actual series a first impression both the first time I saw when we watched it now I was a odds but an interesting one as I actually sat through this in one sitting as having the past and is almost three hours long. If you just watch it all the way through of course they'll be allowed to discuss. I did have a few problems with the Sierra. When it comes to Mrs Shores Wardrobe and Dudley Simpson's incidental music which did bother me a little bit but I'll get to that later on some sure. We have tons discussed but I really really enjoyed this area. Well I for one prefer this. Shah's go go boots. But that's just me so 'cause I kinda dig that all right so As for me. Yeah. It's been awhile since I've watched this one when I I I watched it I got to see it on. Pbs in black and white but recently when they had the the DVD release the they ended up they had the the little bit of Trivia. Here they had. The first episode wasn't color. They had that available but the further remaining episodes two through seven they basically did the whole re colorization process and as a result. You know the I think the video at times looks a little bit weird and poor. Because you know of that you know that. I don't think it's like a a a like a full process of recolonization. I think it's more like a kind of a half effort. And so as a result you know sometimes you can kind of see a little bit of black and white creeping in at the top and the bottom of the screen at times depending on what's going on but so I was really glad to get it in color and I kind of just I just kind of get. Dig The overall vibe. You know you of get a little bit of the James Bond. Ish feel to to pertwee's doctor in this one. I love the idea of like. Hey you've got three creepy aliens in astronaut suits walking around and killing people with their touch and I just love the whole look. I love the way they were shot. As they you know walk You know in as trinity toward the camera and You know it just Liz Liz actually gets an action sequence in this one which I definitely want to talk about and I think it's a really nice little Early entry to jump. Pertwee's era all right so give a little bit of an overview before we get into our main things this episode the story. Excuse me was written. By David whittaker her who notably wrote the crusade the power of the DALEKS Patrons for story the evil of the Daleks the enemy of the world which hey DJ. Nick and I talked about here next up everywhere and the wheel in space but interestingly it was rewritten by by Terrance dicks Trevor Ray and Malcolm the incredible hulk because apparently David Whitaker. This story was apparently originally written for Patrick. Trautmann's era but then when Petro Frazer Hines and Wendy. Padbury left the show. The the original plans that were the story was being set in the future and it didn't have unit and So when when The story you know. Obviously the Jon. Pertwee ERA STARTED. They needed stories for it. And as a result when this story was adapted. Apparently David Whitaker had a lot of problems. Writing for the PERTWEE era. He came up with a few attempts. They didn't work out so apparently Trevor Ray Turns Dixon Malcolm. Hulk ended up rewriting the story and adapting it for jump. Pertwee's era so I thought that was kind of interesting and The story is directed by Michael Ferguson. And was the third serial from season. Seven nineteen nineteen seventy so th anniversary almost the ambassadors of death and of course starring. Jon Pertwee as the third Dr Caroline John as Liz Shaw and Of course with guest appearances by Nicholas Courtney as the Brigadier John Levinas Sergent John. Benton John Avnery has a turn here as the big bad of the story. General Charles no relation Carrington. He's notable because he played the character enlightens in fury from the deep and He played Richard Rail Tin in-depth to the Dow dialects rank win in the power of crawl from the Tom Baker era and he was in a little movie. You sort of May Have heard of called the godfather part three which I thought was kind of interesting Ronald Allen Played Ralph Cornish and previously. He played a character named radio in Petro Story. The dominators and Playing the reporter. John Wakefield in the story is Michael. Wisher who was in several doctor who stories most notably as Davos in Genesis of the daleks that Tom Baker classic so we essentially have Daverson. This we have wrecks feral or excuse me he also played Rex Pharaoh in terror. The AUTOBAHNS CAKE IN CARNIVAL MONSTERS MAG rick in revenge of the Cyberman in Morelli in planet of evil from Tom. Baker's era and also most notably in the story. We haven't action by the name of Jeffrey beavers private Johnson the the radio operator for Unit. That name says familiar while. Hey you know he was Played the second master. In the keeper of Truckin and of course many big finish audios as he's reprised the master for those and So essentially we have Davos and the master in the story which is Kinda cool and Jeffrey beavers also was in the two thousand ten movie era version of clash of the titans. And the tutors and also most notably hey he was the husband of Caroline John who played Liz Shaw until her death in June of two thousand twelve when Saudi she passed away so thankfully Jeffrey beer still with us. I believe so Which is Great? Because I love hearing him on big finish but I think that's a pretty interesting little bit of Trivia so Anybody a have anything else. They'd like to add before we get to our topics. No I well said as always Charles and I'm looking forward to talking about getting into the meat of the discussion story. All right so with that in mind topic number one space control to Dr John. Take your protein pills and put Joe Helmets on sorry. Couldn't resist a little David Bowie? Riff there from space oddity. Because Hey let's talk about the the doctor and Liz the third doctrine Liz as The doctor goes into space and Liz finally it's an action sequence of our very own only to get captured and forced to Hang out in this bunker for most of the story so I WANNA get everybody's thoughts. Nixon sure are wonderful. Special guests companion this time. Let's start with you. What is your thoughts about? The third doctor lives in the story. Well when it comes to to Jon Pertwee is I as I mentioned before. I just love the he. Is this man of action. I suppose it also reflected times little. Be as no bond spy shows were pre popular during the seventies though. He the his vanished Nike. Though we get CMO of the doctors mental prowess and how he's pretty much a few steps ahead of everybody else and I always also found the concept of the earth. Doctor was an interesting concept is in this case. It's not Mohamed. That goes the mountain. It's the mountain that comes to Muhammad as they say but we know that in this case doctors an excellent diplomat become a theme in quite a few series and of course we noticed he is very short tempered with those whom he may find stupid or just seem slow compared to him and also I have to admit though. I'm not a car guy. I love to see him. Dr Betsy whenever we get the opportunity as he has tricked out with the gadgets and Gizmos and so I kinda got the sixties Batman vibe from that version of the batmobile and the gadgets and so that was Kinda cool also you know as I did mention. We did get his genius. When it comes to developing to to the ambassadors probably knows way more than the folks at the British Space Programme. Do at this point so so that was. Kinda Fun and when it comes to his show we'll caroline. John is always a pleasure to watch and I think it was an excellent touch that rather than just give the doctor pretty face or person to protect or in his words someone to pass him test tubes and tell about Britain we actually learned surprise surprise. Women can be attractive and intelligent if the to kind of knocked right. The two not mutually exclusive votes. I think it's wonderful. Smart woman can really and truly be a companion eight him during his Sajjan and on Green Planet and my only gripe is if she is a scientist you think she dressed more sensibly rather than how going out in shorts skirts. I mean I know it was the style at the time but I find it was a bit of an attempt to sexualize but we do know this is not what the show is about that will be also have a problem with future female companions but I must say willing to have a very soft spot for this show not to mention. She's the first companion living color which is very cool right exactly and just see how about you. What were your thoughts about these two characters when I watched this Episode and actually any of those with the third doctor. I go back to when it was the fiftieth anniversary. An for several weeks in a row Bbc America did a Stephen Moffatt talking about each of the doctors and they had other things and they were really special Specials carton pardon the pun a third doctor revisited or something like that. Yeah and and he talked about and I know this is obvious. It's worth saying you. It was like it was a he. He'd already talked about how much Patrick Troughton had to. Carry right to me the second doctor but this guy. It's a brand new show. It's set in earth it. It's in color He's working with unit He is as we talked about a doctor of a man of action and I I'm always just impressed that they were able to do that. Major change yet. It feels like doctor who So I really like this Especially being set earthbound. Yeah Yeah and I They got we got away to have the doctor getting into space. Though I wonder if the free time lords are unhappy like if they had found out that he had gone in this primitive capsule would they have been. You know you know like okay. You broke curfew..

"With Malcolm Colquhoun. All the rest of them tear stinks. You know what I thought when I was watching it. And IT'S A it's a random for but bear with me. I used to work with a guy and if you had to move a table with him just a six foot trestle table from where you're stood to the other side of the room you'd think that two people could reasonably cooperate and just lifted and carrying across the room. But this guy after a few steps would say no hang on a minute if we swap place and I put my hand down there and you put your hand on there and then you get in an argument with him and take thirty times longer than the task itself. I kept thinking of this guy and I thought the Comedians were a little bit like that. They wanted to kidnap fifty thousand people. So instead of just getting satellite over Burnden Park or something on a Saturday zapping them all up they come out with the most convoluted ridiculous scheme where they would have had to form their travel company higher the planes or by the plane's higher premises at Gatwick Apple and then come up with most contrived Contri- sets of circumstances people one hundred a time. Miniaturise THEM IN A design. The plane that miniaturize them and then take them to their spaceship like so much of the Triton era it makes absolutely no sense and I love it for I do love it. More more fund the wheel in Space. But yeah but it's over similar level of yes. Pollack says if you pardon the PUN befriends lot season for is just is just ridiculously written and so on and so forth to season five and that greatly amused me oriented Einstein correctly. I'm glazing everybody by episode six to count the rams the car park were they going to have to those bodies in the cars in the car. Park indefinitely yes. You find them at least until they come through until they aided F. would come back again back around the next week think somebody would have noticed. But it's a it's a celebration of nonsense. I absolutely adore it. And and that is counterbalanced by the cast who are absolutely superb without you know really how donates. Donald Pickering is the standout performance of is even through the animation. Done at Kay's lovely isn't a young couple when he's yeah. And then you've got you've got Bentham story and polling collins as well as just a fellow cast callings. Everyone's favorite scarce companion I did find that performance suffered a bit when she was entirely animated. Because there was something about a delivery though. I think we should have much better. Actually I didn't. I didn't reward ships. They've three on this occasion. So she for are not safer campuses. She was slightly woodenness. Scare solidly in this. I thought old line delivery We end every sense is on a down note not but even more than other more than told me about accents them as much as I love was named Bernard McKay yes. His Scottish accent was very peculiar and reminded me of another one. I've heard recently very similar. It was something. Px IS DID IN THAT ERA. They went from an old floaty lilting Song of skull. Which I've not. What part of is that guy? Enforce it some sort of Edinburgh thing but I'm not gonNA name it's eight. I think he was doing but it was really wasn't Glasgow. Yeah it was. It was if anything it was probably east coast and maybe a bit further north in Edinburgh. I think there's an episode of Law. Peter Whims Edens Seventies. I watch what you said in Scotland and they have him at Callan at the end of the answers were actually genuine skull. Titian but they were so all. I know what it was. Michael Shade was do. That's what Cullen Lonely Callum Russell Hunter. Oh that's what you mean so. It was genuinely Scottish in this episode. Michael shared was doing a very very similar flew to flutie sort escorts access to the one that was doing here possibly no connection whatsoever but if anybody out there with knowledge of accents and richer classic television would lead to back me up. I'll be very grateful. Mckay from Yorkshire from Bolton unrelated to. I think I think he I think he was adopted but his adopted family. I'm loosely related by a common ancestor. Who was murdered on the way home from the Pub Amos? Yeah he's he's from Bolton Frazer hines are. He was a bit disturbing as well. Yeah very uncanny. Wasn't it was very strange. Hearing him lose the Scottish even though he's not Scottish obviously but before I give up my fear about these weird slightest happened. Isn't that phrase said about the accident. He originated for Jamie and highlanders and then he changed. It wants to become a regular they all know. It wasn't so much that but he he decided not to make accurate. Because it would senator to win and nobody believed shanks. Yeah maybe I'm wrong. What they're doing is something very accurate. I don't recognize because I've been conditioned violent. Scott is kind of I mean if you're a native Gaelic speaker it Kinda sounds almost Norwegian Times. It is it does sound quite foreign and then there's an area that's a bit further south where it's kind of Lowland Scots but not Edinburgh Glasgow. But I don't and yet those was exactly what barricades to an an and finished with Paula. If you finish with your ended K. issue into the ground well and truly did yours. What Mr Leila in there as well yes. Of course yeah yeah. Torrential is about very large in L. E. My my wife Mrs Morris. She's obsessive Chris Chandulal. She reckons Eve's place go ahead and their child which which would even after my day. So maybe that's why don't I didn't think anybody outside the world adopted? Who had ever is that what you think he's from. She's nodding at me to me. He's just invasion time and faces crucial but no apparently he's. He's up there in the Pantheon of play school presenter. She's more fun than Brian. Cans and Fred Harris and all the greats on me author school has channel. They got Carol Shell Soil Derrick Griffith Dame fluela Benjamin The job remember however is a kid chloe Ashcroft All who could forget her Yes and the terribles eighteen. And she's after one time wasn't sure class models the same to you shaukat models it's their last involvement is it okay Because there they were already on the ropes with the macro terror and the macro prop but they satellites that they The satellite that they made the satellite model that they capri failed to to using the animation. They gave no. It came with no or little instructions to have. It's supposed to be rigged up so they they put a call and they said they said just just hang it from just hang it from wire so the hung it from wire and the entire thing crashed to the ground and Patrick have been standing ten seconds earlier and when he turned around. They're all wearing eyepatches short overnight repair. Apparently there was another instance. Where one of their Reagan's broke and they wouldn't answer the phone for three hours late so either. Alex is the first one that they use the BBC in House Special Effects. Checkoint and Co. Yeah yeah indeed. So yeah. That's the end of chalk. Rashtra part played but they started well with down x and kind of all downhill from there was quite a scene is to score was thinking listening to on thought term. They conveyed that kind of sense of particularly in the early part of the story of of medicine. Kind of not quite sure what's going on. It's very light on. Music has no. There's no orchestral music and it's all this. All Electronic Beeps and turns and then bits of drum drums in the crazy crazy. Drums sailor during the templates. Six reminded me of yes. Dalek invasion of earth. Yes something. They used to fall back on when covering along location. Sing Antilock It seems to me yeah. So it's a contemporary. Is it the only the second contemporary story after wall machines and must? Yes the cheating one. Yeah which has pose. No I know I was going to say that you've just contrived to Russia ben and polly. But they would have just drop them on an alien planet within. They've always this the start of them. Think about how to run their companions and a bit more structured preplanned Rodman a structured way but is is tight on the filming schedule episode to One by the day yes yeah. Docile contented contractual issues. Isn't it no no? Yes didn't screen for a second long. You do wonder saying they go paid for them. Which is under a couple of episodes of evil of the daleks. I think. Yeah where's site didn't straighten badly. I think my nose bad as Jackie in not far off. I mean. It's arguable in a way that is this is a historical because it's sort of set contemporaneous to the wall machines in a few months. Davis. Mind you have I like it. It's a don't you say this is where it still. It Duchess directed by Jerry Milton. Orland about whom right here might just have a bit from what they will. Machines tied in my. Yeah and I I have my pet savvy that's Something with the talented. And there's some kind of strange attract some style. Chaos theory explanation. Tell this ends up in three different up in three different locations on the same day. Unprecedented only because to them. Because it's moved by Laurie K. Twice and then for the but even twice in kind of thing. And that's why there's never still sledding. Implicit data is up to that time machine acting in that era. I haven't yes and Shop Interesting I'll get. I'll get planning extremely competent. Make box set to explain this. Yes yeah volcano that another contemporary rule. The cricket catastrophe landing defeats the scene. I guess such everyone's Yeah Sawed off facts and I don't know if they chose. Well you know the episode ten times off deep in intensive it's not just continuity but dopes. Oh Six stylings and says it totally? Starting this is the second attempt at a contemporary swing. And it's while it's not quite swinging as machines but Smith Briggs is is another very modern young young yes and the whole thing about the much contemporary fame. Just not the first tower is not much. A theme is a plot device and yet another full stop because it didn't do another one again. Do they feel to spearhead shooting doth anyway that's no good features a little bit sitting. Ats Web AFIA interesting. Well I'm getting off the master tangent here but you're absolutely right.

"You think this bizarre aw thing where we're tracking jumps on top of this machine and then it flips through ninety degrees taken down. which is you know luckily bit of technology but you wonder why wouldn't just got into standing up to go down I? It's an impressive. I think having studio. Yeah Yeah Yeah I love it. Lovely lovely film work because well Alif of of the In the thing so so yeah. It's very very impressive. Is just a little bit hard to explain why I would be like that. And then you get the extraordinary scene if deaf deaf of Salamander sitting in his office smoking a cigar while the people outside our Running around and sorting stuff out again. It's a nice little character touch Ya. I sort of worry about the ventilation down there zone. Yeah that's very true. Yes it's another thing they haven't thought about through with it being twenty eighteen or something that You definitely it would be up for a tribunal. Smoking health and -secutive alleged wasn't even sixty so it it changes tech quite quickly and sold all of a sudden. It's about the people down to live. And what are they doing. And why are they doing this. And why swallow everything. The Salamanders told them the allude to people who've gone back who you assume salamander is bumped off on the way back. Does Ali originally three characters underground the grand. You actually have any sort of interaction with Swan Mary and call him. Mary seems very calm. And What Not Swan. It seems fairly calm until he finds out a salamander and Collins gets I've Rolton loses his head. Every five seconds is interesting character places. They ed La Nina Yang to contrast the fun that interesting and also the sets and the thing block the Geiger counter and office. Sort of stuff. I mean I think the whole thing is quite I mean. I think the sets foot for sixty doctor who I think you know. They're on the better side it does. It does become a very small story all of a sudden you know you brought story in episodes one to four shooting death of Farrier. We are mentioned that you you've got that kind of them surrounding the building and you got a sense of it being played out in a very broad stage and then the last two. It's very much around the research station and in just a few key characters doesn't see it salamanders anyone else to call upon when when the chips them oatley yeah. The story does seem One of those full pots followed by to pop. And Yeah. Yeah Yeah you get lighter on Holiday Line a sinks it being it's the The newspaper headline that sworn in as well. It's funny that that's what does it look at that. It's Scott last year. When he swan says loss he has died it does have olga summing two thousand seventeen on Roy there is correct but otherwise via the boxes so that the news by attached to? They're very playing just like one word says makes for whatever it is yes you get very very good attention to detail on the bit of by lots of mayor. Yeah it's it's it's It's like a terrible version of the generation game with the things coming in compared to know. Maybe I forgot the different. I'm quite sure how that how that works as well. I mean where where is is sort of halfway up. Airports are almost the top in an after the lift shaft to to to discipline down this. That's not my clear. Is I mean the ending. It's a bit muddled the ending where you got Canton Salamander at that exit halfway down the Shaw can sell explosion following which they can still book the the CICI TV of the underground bunker in think the explosion was sort of Reichel connection. And you'd think that it would kill one down ever didn't Sausa- rotten. But I do spend a minute or side with a bit of expedition of a astro saying what about the people down there but we how would we get to the MIC. Yeah it's this she say look you're going to be wondering so we have to talk about it right now then. We can perhaps suggest late rewrite when the act is Edessa hanging around and saying hang on a minute what happens to let's say it's my character doesn't have resolution you mentioned about Various death before briefly. And I think that's it's part of that's part of the same. The the God captain and his belly held contempt for Benthic all the way through the store basically gives them all sorts of good. He looks most of the time throughout the whole story This is one instance where it is all Siwan mm-hmm another instance. Where we some sign that? He's going to torture. Johnny Vittori looks at Zippy's bet to go here what night. It doesn't send to lock him very much at all and I thought that was interesting touches. Something facial thing rather than anything their choice. It's probably scripted that way but muscle that was interesting in various sort of goes out of it fairly quickly after being quite important all of a sudden. She's gone did you feel about that. Richard III. It just feels like so. See if this is this huge thing with with farrier turning against Salamander does seem to be very to be thrown away a little bit in in kind of shooting but yeah I mean it it it it Kinda I suppose you get the sense that they are ruthless signed Any turns against we'll get hunted down so it associated story a bit. Yeah I lied to. Its before we get these different variations of the doctor. BE PRETENDING TO BE SALAMANDER. So he's not very good at persuading bannock. I think but but takes. Giles can't write in. But then I suppose jars. Ken Hasn't been with Salamander for a few years. So maybe that makes more sense that he's the one that doesn't recognize him so much. Thought it was interesting. How managed to convince Bruce Stride off the bat having Ernie same salamander one really? I quit to get his his behavior toward spruce Yes such realistic degree. He must've been guessing mustn't team in he would have to. Guess what kind of character salamander laws ause which because he instantly starts bullying Bruce But that doesn't necessarily come to the clinic and it does does tend to tend to cut across the view that you're discussing earlier the you know. The doctors tried to gather all the evidence to see whether Salamanders indeed about man and Yeti gatty seems immediately assumes that he must be the kind of bullying time maybe not as generic of people who are in charge it. Yeah and then Bruce. Bruce does mention the end of episode three to Salamanca. You're bit strange in office but obviously was not strange knock firms question at the time the captives down below. They get a chance to have some dinner in episode six. So at least they've gone. I mean you know. It's not just as straight couple of boxes but they do get to talk in briefly Wishy but she does get you. Don't get to this don't you get you get your food in episode three as well. It didn't get some stike before he does. Yeah and there's a little talk of pies according to rubber chicken yes yes feeling thinking about it ambassador death. There's a similar kind of death for the scientists gets brought dinner and it's got but it hasn't isn't dinner said radioactive elementary so David Whitaker maybe well if greedy rooftop it Maybe maybe Has a interested in that kind of thing. poisoning or exposure. Whatever death by like you know? Yeah you're calling as his hero moment when astor derives no japs. Don't stern attack attack average. You know precisely what scores. Wisconsin from Australia Tizzy. Maybe maybe these are kids who are going to save the world being picked out from From across the world by Salomon Rollin Rollin from the locality. Yeah so the underground base. That's that's in Australia as well. None of them are Australia is interesting. It's only been partly thought out. I think yeah they must have just brought the all over from England. Because I don't know maybe the English investor causing a volcano. You know all right go can be bad. Despite the fact that volcanoes in England or Australia extinct it is clever how they managed to close candidates in Hungary from Australia remarkable. It's a bit like the graphic tron. Isn't it in that regard terribly clever in the future values like the ionizer which mention beginning to travel by team. Take it even quicker than the rocker. So Salamander cleverly when he tries to pretend to the doctor doesn't actually opened his mouth. You've just mumbles Jamie. So he doesn't have to try to a attracting. The impression Torah. Yeah never say salamander actually impersonated tonight. The doctor's voice not just as well although I would like to see trout's pretending to be salamander pretending to be enough. I think that would have been an interesting acting assignment. I think tracking would have been up to it some way anyway very very very very hurriedly. He's dragged off into the vortex ask you take much computation. This great shot while it was split into one showing with the two of them. That's that's really good. Would actually be good. Wasn't it a case of They had planned more split-screen shops have problems with the camera. So it was is just the last one I had is effective. I think. Yeah if you'RE GONNA use it once modest really well I guess the first time I thought what sort I thought it was a bit rush but actually this time round. When I was expecting I it tells a story effectively? As you say it's a it's it's a little brush but it's not the end of the world have you read the Recent Comic Book of Return in a Salamander in the the trump we ear or haven't to do tell us well. I I read it from the library. Yeah I think what does it look full. I forget what it was called It's it was billed as like a Patrick Troughton An jumper with Dr Mate. The jumper we are unit from but spoilers but it turns out salamander who survive four boys at flood that met some aliens about supposing there it is interesting to me that they can always come up with new ways of freeing but he's cactus actions you have defined six salamander return of Salamander Salamanders indestructible. He must be like kept in style. If survives gets blown OPS TIME VORTEX NIZING. I think if you're going to bring back salamander than comic book is a good way to do it that way. You don't have to hear him on big finish nine. Yeah yeah well wonder if if Frazer hines could do is impression of of Salomon. That's what I was wondering but I wonder if that goes for the other so in the comics in the comic book renters to Salamander. impersonate the doctor. Yes yeah all right now. Well yes we'd be interested in time to think about it yet although he doesn't meet the doctor until the very end so he's not going to have lots of material to go on this thing. Yeah that's the other thing. I was wondering how how aware of Doctor Salomon throughout the store. He knows as somebody impersonating him. Because he's told that it was you or somebody like Indra Spurs excite three beautiful cut away to council classic doctor who it had to be the ending it. was you you off someone. Like it was cold. The heralds of destruction. That's Roy Oy Tom. Yes by poll call now. I know pool. Oh well I mean I I am you. You've made me interested to to to look at it. I mean I know because I have time for anything I think. Challenge Salamander Ampoule or call now is a particularly good. "Leaving things up to the imagination because because you have a lot of stuff happens off camera So your imagination kinda fills in the blanks. Now all we have is just that one picture of writing right right around his throat right but but I think it works to only show the claw because You know the it it leaves more imagination and like I said and you know and and you don't know how many like how many macaroni there and surrounding him you don't know what else is out there and all you can see as the key in the actor that played him even in the animated version. you know they the the look of horror on his face yeah with so expressive and really sold that scene for me I really enjoyed it. Ultimately like talk about the gas ultimately is revealed as something to the macro have are indeed in charge the I think it was what the doctor and meet dock. They ended up of going into the tunnels and the find a re no no doctrine polly. I'm sorry the doctrine poly they find this control room where the macaroni or apparently early there somehow. Working the controls with their big lobster claws yes. I don't know how that worked but okay with their but they look like they're in charge anyway and and so now that they've seen this they have to try to get word out of what's really going on to everybody being convinced them that. Hey we need to do something about this and ultimately figure out After the doctor Gets Band back on board team. Tartus the kind of work out how to switch the inflow and outflow together and throw this lever and apparently that saves the day So what did you think of the good. What did you think of the resolution for dealing with the macro the threat I was? Yeah because I think at that point in time. There's no way he's going to turn them to. They're not got to become good right. They've got their own agenda and Obviously people are disappearing. They're going on down these mind's eye even even pour me doc doc ends up ends up dead. And Yeah there's I. I don't think there was any other way you had to do the old Deal brigadier salary and steal. Yeah Yeah Yeah which always makes you you know. Conceicao think of the doctor is being hypocritical. for being mad at the brigadier when He. How many times has he done that to other aliens races? Yeah yeah well on a plus side at least the columnists head crab for probably a few months but they have enough enough butter. That's what I WANNA know. Nice butter sauce. There is no such thing as butter. No I can't believe it's not butter but So the doctor and everyone at the end of the episode they for whatever reason the Colin decide. Hey let's decree fan dance festival in honor of the strangers and offer the strangers trophy And I'm Ben like goes looking for the doctor sees him like essentially playing recorder. So this remember. This is early early on trout narrow. So he's still playing with recorder a lot right and It's kind of hanging out chilling to the music and and Ben tells them well. Hey they wanna make you the next pilot and so the doctor who at first is like. Wow Oh this is great. Let's just hang out and enjoy all this then. Once ben tells him about that he's under nomination for the next pilot The doctor is like okay. That's IT everybody. Pick up up. We gotTA GET OUTTA here. Do they do the highland fling out of their yes. Exactly that's even in the audio. The Annika Inca wills she's like they did the highland fling which I thought was perfect. Yeah because with the way that the audio ends it's like well. What do we do now? Try to get outta there trying to get out of there and so they decided to do the high flying Just like Jamie did how they knew what Jimmy did. I have no idea but okay. Let's just roll with it. Exactly all right anything else about the story. I I liked the fact that and this is the this is the second real story that we have Jamie with as a full time companion and it. Just it's it's it's fun to see where he was back then throughout the progression right. 'cause I he just He he he right away he jumped in front of the doctor is as his protector. Because they the doctors helped helped him in the highlanders and he'd already had swore his loyalty to them and right away he sees the the first one out of the charges with the stick is the first one to jump in front of the doctor to protect them. I I love I love Jamie this episode. Yeah and it does strike me. Now that you bring us up how quickly Jamie steps into the forefront yeah and especially in this story where ban WHO's essentially the young male lead Gets taken over so Jamie has to Kinda step up but But Jamie was already kind of doing that. I mean he was. He was quickly overshadowing. Ben Yeah because he was much better character I think than Ben And you know us much more fun to watch. especially you know being someone from an earlier time Dealing and having that aggressive the attitude that that that highland fighter mentality so he's always looking for a fight and I think that's that's part of the reason why he wasn't being taken over by the guests and replace because he's more strong willed. Yeah yeah exactly and more rebellious. Yeah but But Yeah it strikes me early on how quickly Frazer hines just really really shines as Jamie Yeah and At the only only thing I would have loved to have seen the change a little bit polly was just I think she was is the least of her likeness. As an animated character was was wasn't as good as it could have been right. Yeah I mean yeah. It doesn't really. We saw like her face. Does it right and and I and I had a crush on her from the first time I saw back in in Harles eras just like she she. She is a stunning beauty. All yes she is. She's gorgeous right and when I saw her on heroes like the I think they did a better job with the with the moon base. Yeah yeah the animation but I think that's my only gripe with the with the whole story so just have to kind of keep our fingers crossed for the faceless ones. Yeah which I'm Kinda glad like they've you know we've got The moon base. They did this story now. They're doing the faceless ones. I think a lot of us were surprised. Surprised that they decided they were GonNa do fury from the deep and instead of Evil at the dialects which would have been the next story after the faceless ones. Well I was. I was curious about that because as a bonus on the on the BLU ray and the DVD you'd get absorbed one of two wheeled space right so amazing it does and you know it's only like a ten minute version. I'm glad you brought that up. Thank you that But Yeah it's the the animation and that looks great. Yeah and and Obviously it's the introduction story that introduces Zoe in. It's another Cyberman story. So that's great So that's one one. I would definitely love to see as well. A lot of us are wondering well. When is that coming out you've You've obviously been working on it. You get ten minutes of footage right here so Where's the rest? Yeah so so. It's interesting you that they haven't decided do any hartnell stories in animated form warm. I think it'd be maybe just because people are more open to the Patrick Troughton era or right because of the you know there's less historical. It's more SCI FI but but master-plan. It would take forever to animate but I'm sure a lot of us would love to see Alex master-plan especially after getting a mission to known. Yeah yeah yeah fantastic. Yeah that would be great. I'm still waiting for that to come out on. DVD where's that where's the DVD permission to the unknown. Yeah I haven't seen anything any news about that yet. If if you haven't watched mission to the unknown you go to Youtube and check it out. It's definitely worth it. Yeah highly recommend recommended I thought they did a great job for being an amateur production It looks really even got Nicholas Breaks for that which is very cool that he was willing to do that. All right so What's your favorite lines of the story? I got two children that I really liked that. They're both from the doctor. He says the police's don't be obedient. Always make up your own mind. That's a good line is either just a everyone is just. They're they're they're all program they're all all doing what they're supposed to be doing. What controller control wants them to do right and he just he just tells like doesn't like it is? Okay what's your other headlines. Bad laws were made to be broken. Nice very good. This is what you favorites that. Those are good. I've got four uh-huh so the doctor when he was talking to the guards who were trying to tie at Mu dock and I just. I just loved Trautmann's delivery every in this one. He goes not too tight bad for the blood pressure. Yes only trout and can really deliver that line. But I can't do it. Justice Justice Trautmann's trump's unwanted cells that one and for someone who's got high blood pressure like myself when I heard that I chuckled. Yeah I do too so sympathize. All right I also like the doctor and polly where the doctor goes ooh and polly goes? What's the matter and the doctor replies truthful? Did you hear that rhyme. The man who wrote that ought to be sent to the danger gang not us yes so I just love danger. I love the name danger gang. That should be a great band. Name the danger gang. I think I think it's just a play on the on the chain gang. Yeah it should be should be a like a name of a truck ban. You know time danger gang. You're welcome so if you guys make money I get a little bit of residual for coming up with that name Ben Ben Jackson and the doctor Sir Where the doctors confronting Ben about his conditioning? I really liked Ben. Says I do what I'm told and the doctor replies yes. I know. That's why we're here. Isn't it to spy on me. What does control wants note this time? Won't you answer me. You Know Ben. This is very unlike you and Ben Replies. I don't know what you mean. It is my duty and the doctor. Replies it is. It's hard for you to struggle against the voices. Isn't it Ben. But I warn you if you spy the others watch out Jamie doesn't catch you. He's not as tolerant as I am. So Nice. Little warning to uh-huh. Ah Yeah. Look I know your mind control but check yourself before you wreck yourself washout for islander exact watch out for the highland fling Leslie pilot to the doctor where pilots says..

"frazer hines" Discussed on Next Stop Everywhere: The Doctor Who Podcast

"Again everyone. Welcome back to next next up everywhere. The doctor who podcast. I'm your host. Charles skaggs back in the Tartus right here to talk the macro terror here at episode one sixty two and it's not just me because hey that would be really boring so I asked one of our great eight special guests companions one of our favorite specialists companions John Taxes to come back on next up everywhere to talk the macro with me so welcome back to next up everywhere. John how you doing man doing good Charles. Thank you very much but you know there's no such thing as macro there is such thing as macro. Okay see yeah I got I got I got the blue race. I see them their claws. They're out there so it's a fun story. It was it was in and it actually pretty well for the time here the time period. You know even though it's to one that was told in one thousand nine sixty seven so yeah this is all the way back then And I think the themes seems kind of translate a little bit because they're a little bit Orwellian in a lot of places. Yeah I've described this one as one thousand nine hundred four with giant crabs. Yeah exactly yeah back case the crabs show maybe hopefully there's an ointment or something for that or cadmium mm-hmm. Yeah exactly exactly so. Obviously everybody out there. You've heard John Before we talked of Doom Morbus minded evil stolen stolen earth warriors of the deep. And I really wanted to talk about this story macadear because hey it was recently revived. Because is this one of the stories of doctor who that was. Sadly John hit sent to the junk pile and exterminated by the BBC in their infinite wisdom. And so it's been lost. We've had audio recordings and tell us naps and you know little little snippets of video clippings things here and there but nothing you know nothing along the lines of a fool Televised episode that could be presented until now where where it's been one of the The new recent animation revivals of the Patrick Troughton era. You know similar to power the dialects or war What's the other one? I'm trying to think of from the on air. Maybe this is it trying to think if there's any others so far I know I know tasteless ones the faceless ones are coming out so is this year and fury free fury from the deep as well so but maybe yeah maybe this is the second second I guess from the trout narrow the ice warriors but that was just to link the the ones that they already had right. That's yeah that's it exactly. There's there's been kind of missing ones. I think Yeah the moon base exactly. That was the other one I was trying to think of me. Maybe that's maybe that's why I was thinking of 'cause considering that this story takes place right after the moon base. Ace Yeah because it picks up on the cliffhanger where the giant claw and the hardest monitor not sure exactly how they saw claw. But let's just roll with it. It's the Tartus. It's the targets they can do. What every fan well wants? That's exactly exactly so So John was kind enough to join me for this one because I was dying to talk about this one in Jesse as some of you know is less than reticence about talking classic doctor who at times especially something animated So I really appreciate it for John Because I really wanted to talk about this when I and I got to finally watch it for the first time this past week because I saved it because I knew this is coming up and I wanted to save it so as Nice and fresh to talk about it and and and I'm really haven't really had to talk about it so with that in mind Of course the story written by Ian Stuart Black who wrote with the previous stories the savages and the war machines are really. I really like the war machines. My favorite Hartnell era stories. Yeah I have to agree with that which introduced of course Ben and polly So no surprise that you know you would write something from early trout near as well and this is his last story for doctor. Who if I'm not mistaken? It was yeah directed by John. DB's and this was the seventh serial of season. Four back in nineteen sixty seven. Patrick Charlton's first season. So yeah you imagine seven cereals. So this'll be an San average four. You know maybe four to six episodes a serial. So you know we're looking around. What episode forty? At least you know forty episode so the gun by by the time this story came out roughly and You know the t forty half hour episodes and of course starring. Patrick Troughton is the second doctor. Antica wills as polly writes Michael Craze Ben Jackson. And everybody's favourite Frazer Hines as Jamie McRae Women and let some interesting cat. Guess cast in this one. Peter Jeffrey who plays pilot in the story. He was notable because he played the character. Count Grendel in one of my favorite Baker stories. The androids of Tara from the time season. Now that is a favourite and he was in some interesting movies over the years. He's been in the abominable. Dr Fides that that Vincent Price Classic from back in the day and he was also in the pink panther strikes again and as a Pink Panther Movie Fan of the Peter sellars Pink Panther. Movies is not the Steve Martin ones. I WANNA. I WANNA state that right out. I as a steamboat fan. I kind of already it quickly. Disown the Steve. Martin Luther Horrible Terrence Lodge played. Who plays me DOC? He was in in the Jon. Pertwee Era Story Carnival monsters as Orem and he was in Jon. Pertwee's last story planet the spiders as Moss Ian Ian Fairbairn who played Cuesta in the story was in credit number of Episodes he was in. He played the character. Mark Gregory in the invasion one of my favorites from the Patrick Troughton era love. That's of that story John Bromley in inferno which we've talked about here you're on next up everywhere and Dr Chester in the seeds of doom. which you and I may be slightly familiar with since we talked about it once upon on a time sander plight now? Here's where this gets a little really interesting casting so Sandra Bryant please chickey Eh. And she's only in the first three episodes. Because apparently she got some other gig lined up acting gig lined up and so she asked to be let go from her contract early and so they brought in an actress named Carol. Keys to play. Chinky in episode four okay. She is she a time. Lord did she regenerate so apparently she got a better offer. Yeah exactly right in the middle of filming right exactly. That's crazy. Yeah I mean it must have been a really good offer. I don't know how she got out of that one. It's like all of us one more episode. You can't wait one more exactly exactly but Okay so Kitty She Sandra Bryant played kitty in the war machines. Now Carol Keys. He's meanwhile in. This gets even weirder this this connection here. Carol keys played a character named Sheila in frontier appearance. Space from the Jon Pertwee era but she didn't play it at. She wasn't under the name. Carol keys she actually was under a different name. Lou Ann Peters. That's a huge difference so okay and apparently she had seen career under a different name. I didn't write that down but I'm just like okay. So she's had three different names. He appeared in two doctor who stories under two different aims. Okay and She was also in Fawlty Towers. If you're curious under presumably Libyan Peter's as well so tax time must be really interesting first thing for her right. I don't know if she's still alive or not. Maybe not maybe it's not an issue anymore but but That's a weird one. As far as casting goes and that's a lot for the sixties which often did weird things back curtain clobber played Ola. In the story and He played galley master in the Romans from the Hartnell era and he was also in James Bond movies octopussy and the living living daylights so another doctor who James Bond connection choosing for those of you keeping track at home and saying this of course in the hot on the heels of the new time to die trailer just came out today which is very cool and it was also an episode of blackadder the third as George the third so if you're looking for old Girton clobber because hey who isn't check that out. And lastly John Harvey Played Officia and he was also also in the war machines. Slot machines connections in this one As Professor Brett and he was also in the nineteen seventy five version of rollerball. Aw which interestingly enough if you're kind of that sci-fi movie kind of thing you know classic Scifi movie buff but just thrown thrown out. There is a little trivia thing and Speaking of Trivia of course This is kind of where John tends to shine so John Henry the interesting trivia like to share with our listeners. Yeah this was actually the first story that featured the doctor's face in the opening titles right and it's too you read that To exactly yeah we had. We had to wait all these years just to see it again. Yeah but yeah it was I was really surprised to see that. Were you surprised when I started to digress. All your life So were you surprised that the used an animated version of Patrick Troughton face instead of the just the actual titles for this macro terror Animation no I think It played it well with the with the entire story. Okay I think it would look a little strange if you would put the The the real the real life action. Yeah saidles superimposed onto there. It was just a lot easier to do it this way. It just felt like more like you know it was more. Seamless is what you're saying. Yeah Yeah exactly okay. I just kind of curious what you if you thought it was jarring or not if they had done it the other way. Yeah I know issues with an okay all right. I'm just curious all right so anything else. some working titles finals for this story were The spiderman the insect men and the Macara's so it's I'm kind Johny. Glad that went with the Medicare I would have been okay with the macro because hey that kinda sounds like the. Yeah but but I'm guessing they probably would have had a little bit of legal trouble from marvel if they went with the Spiderman. Exactly that's the best guess. Yeah the only re- only Trivia I have is that in addition to that I did have the title sequence so I'm glad you brought the titles Apparently for in this animated version for a practical reasons they changed Herron costume. Changes were cut down for the animated version and the scene in episode. One were polly's all these hair is washed and cut short They really chop that scene up or they did because they didn't want it because the the the different character designs where she's got long hair which she's got short hair and Apparently that was just probably too much for the budget. I'm guessing yeah. They already already had a lot of the The characters drawn up for the animation..
