"With Ashley Frasca here's your garden to do list this week one of the things about the show that was very important to me was just getting back to garden basics I admit I get a little overwhelmed in the yard sometimes and you just seem to get overwhelmed or intimidated by the things you don't know so that's what we try to do every Saturday on the show's kind of help keep you in line to make sure you're just doing a little bit of the time and you're learning as you go so first of all want to examine the backside of a lot of your shrubs that could be you wanna miss rob's Camelia most of those are done blooming but this is the time scale insects are going to be born the little babies are going to hatch and you don't want scale wax scale and T. scale or a couple of common once you don't areas like Florida they have purple scale brown skill or little guys are generally when their babies are like orange but then when they get a little more mature they're white that is very easy to often see on the stands of the underside of the leaves what you want to do is get ahead of it and start spraying with horticultural oil is the pests are already present or you just see the beginnings of them on the plants because what they're gonna do they suck the sap out of the leaves and that leads to the plant dying you know a few years ago I had a sky pencil Holly on either side of my front door and just eats long skinny stem one by one started turning brown and I didn't get ahead of the scale that's exactly what killed it so or cultural oil is going to be the best of the kind of breaks down that waxy coating that the insects have and then they release something the black like city mold is what we call it and so then you see the black on the backside of the leaves too so anyways yeah do that and also speaking of Camelia you could also be removing spent camellia blooms that have fallen on to the ground going to remove those from around the bush that prevents Camelia petal blight so maybe get out there with a five gallon bucket and do that secondly last chance to prune rose bushes to approximately one half of their present size you know with my knockouts I usually go back to where they're just twelve inches high I mean they look so ugly but there ready they've already got you know dark dark red new growth and even some leaves on them they're ready to go I posted a video on Facebook a few weeks ago my poor husband had to film just such a menial task of improving the knock out roses but I think it'll kind of help guide you at least not going in there all **** nilly with the printers but really having some structure to how you do that and lastly this is kind of a tricky one repot houseplants that you want to move out doors there are a lot like the bright light not direct sun light but bright light so routes will need more room in the pot is they want to grow a little more rapidly in the sun so the plan that you're taking outside now look at the end of March boy by time you bring it back in and maybe in September October it's it's going to be a lot bigger maybe ZZ plant Croton is what I love that is so common down in Florida Mancera those could get huge in Swiss cheese plant those get really tall so you may want to think about staking those or have something to help those stand up but let's talk about re potting in the reporting the house plans before you move them outdoors you want them to be in their best ideal conditions right so generally step one only move up to one inch larger pot so if you've got a six inch pot look for like a seven inch pot don't go to big break up the roots if they've become root bound or if they started to get roots growing outside the drainage holes you know you want to be aware of that and then use a good potting soil clean pots and clean potting soil out of the bag rather than garden soil just because the drainage is going to be a little bit better for really and also don't planted too deeply so you want to build that up with some soil then put the plant in there than bill keep building up around the sides and maybe have the the top of the the root ball like about a maybe half an inch below the top rim of the pot.
