You shoot thursday night from thursday night for friday because they're gonna shoot you doing the real draft on thursday night and they're going to use that in the film they had me at. "In this film. So i thought it was a good prestige picture. It's not my favorite film of the of the cycle but it's good prestige movie convention franklin jolla to as a you it like if anything like the movie underplays out like how badly that was handed way. Really that was exaggerated. And that's actually a pretty tough thing to pull off but i thought i mean he's always good but i thought he was really important casting choices. Well thought was quite successful. Those really you know what he was he was awesome in. After i saw it. I went in research that judge. I have the same like. Oh my god who was actually worse than in the movie and reminds me of the posts that I think scott you put up a couple days ago about harry reid's experience and how casino actually like tones down because reality just impossible and this judges like that anyway. franklin jello. We were watching old star trek reruns the other day and we were watching a three part deep space nine thing where. He's the villain. He was awesome. So i'm always happy to see. Franklin agila i have a past. Your lovely imminent. I'm gonna gonna balance balancer the order that we agreed on a little bit here Because there's a film that's basically connected with this movie and that students in the black messiah right where they are at the same time and at times. They are covering the save events and i watched this one just fairly recently. I enjoyed a puree. So why don't we start with you. Allies yeah so i I felt like. I probably had like an out trae opinion on this one. I didn't think it was bad. But i remember feeling like did it kinda faded. Actually you know certain movies. Stick with you and you're like more week later in this one for me kinda did it. I think it's because the more. I looked back on the more. I felt like there. Got just too close to being a didactic in like a really Relentless conway missed it. It's a it's kind of constrained film. It felt like to me where like there's just no room for the characters to breeze kind of there's no like Flexibility and i thought about it i got i was like look. The jesus parable here is pretty clear. It's intentional so for people who are into it. I think it's really well. May and if you're on board with sort of the case it's making. I think you know you're going to like it a lot but for me. The thing i just remembered most is actually thought. Likud was the best part luke. Stanfield was the best part of the movie even though he doesn't get chew the scenery and and really just like run with it But so that was my ticket. It's not bad. But i. I ended up being a little disappointed. I probably liked it slightly more than chicago. Seven compared to expectations. you know. i'd like chicago seven more than i expected likes. Although you know. I guess i thought don't again. I did like the judas. Part of it actually worked very well. I thought that was the richest and most interesting part of the movie..

"Of New York City. Glenn Berman and Michael Riedel wants one WR Well nomination season. We have the Golden Globes out earlier this week, and then we have the SAG Awards Screen Actors Guild Awards. Gonna be kind of a strange season for the nomination because I don't know what the show's gonna look like. Certainly no red carpets or anything like that. Yes, there will be virtual, But sag nominations made a little more sense to letting me than the Golden Globes did, But here to sort it all out for us is Joe Newmark WR movie movie minute. Good Morning, Joe. How are you? Morning, guys? Yeah, it is going to be a weird your first ball. Of course. Everything is gonna be virtual. For the most part. We still don't know what the Oscar is gonna be like. But the Golden Globes gonna be doing it where Amy Poehler's in New York, I think and Tina Fey's in L. A. So they'll be sort of zooming back and forth. Or maybe cameras, you know, or cell phones that on the potential winners, and so if they win, it might be, you know, accepting live kind of thing. It's just a quick note. I think it's going to be interesting this year because it's gonna be almost a little bit like the year that the Oscars celebrated indie films. Remember that back in 1996 when it was movies like Shine and Fargo When things like that, that sort of got a lot of attention and Billy Crystal famously said, You know who are all you people because they weren't Hollywood royalty on. I think it's gonna be a little of that this year. Because all of these things you know we'll have streamed very few of them if any premiered in theaters on so right saying makes a lot more sense and Golden Globes, of course, But you know, that's like 95 foreign journalists voting for those things. Where is the Screen Actors Guild is from people in the industry. And so that makes a lot of sense. So let's just jump into that. You know, I think that the the the Sehgal Wars has got a good sense of what what people really saw and what they liked, And obviously there's a There's a sense of the Golden Globes kind of lost. You know, the nominee a lot of black lead films. In fact, none of them the five blood did not get nominated. Where is it did at the at the SAG Awards? And ah and Marines. Black bottom came out. Really, You know, strong on top. Chadwick Boseman got nominated for best actor posthumously. Obviously, he also has nominated best supporting role 45 blood, So it's It's gonna be an interesting sort of here. What did you guys think? Is you read those? Those SAG awards? What jumped out at you? Well, I think it was so different the job than the Golden Globes because the Golden Globes was lily white and of the five nominees for best film at the SAG Awards for them. Well, at least three of them were minority and the fourth one involves the Korean story. So it was. It was very diverse. That's right. That's right. In fact, four out of five the only one that's not in the trial the Chicago seven, which is a great film at night, and that's also another thing, which was kind of Netflix has gotten, you know a really big boost this year. This may be the year that they end up winning an Oscar after a couple of Europe strong years because all we're looking at the SAG awards and looking even at Golden Globes. You've got a lot there. But right for the five Bloods, Marini's black bottom all great choices. Minori is really strong through the people that movie that people may not know about minorities. They're really nice films A really strong Minori is about a Korean family that's living in Arkansas. They're immigrants to Arkansas and trying to fit into the community, and the father is played by a terrific actor named Steven Yeun that people may know from the walking dead. And the grandmother who's in there who I think is nominated, actually for AH, Sag Award for best Supporting actress is really fun. She's a She's sort of this live wire. She's really Sparky, this old woman who's kind of always giving, you know kind of inappropriate advice in some ways, and it's really kind of a fun a fun character. It zah fish out of water movie, which is really, you know, obviously, it's always a popular thing, but it's really interesting. It's interesting about how how different cultures kind of assimilated into really nice. A nice drama One night in Miami is also another one that people have been talking about it got nominated at at the SAG Awards is directed by the actress Regina King, who got a NASCAR for a fields. We could talk and not watchman and a few other things, and that's based on a place about a night in 1964 that Muhammed Ali, then cold caches. Play, of course, uh, Sam Cooke, Malcolm X. And, uh, and the football players seem to be actor Jim Brown get together in a in a hotel room with a sort of celebrate. Uh, cash is Clay's win over Sonny Liston, and it's a great drum. It's really terrific. Leslie Odom, who was in Hamilton, uh, got nominated for best supporting actor for ladies. He is It's really a terrific felon that's nominated for best best drama. A to the organ. I'm fumbling story at the SAG Awards. Yeah, these are all really terrific movie that people just seek out. You know, I was kind of sad that my friend Franklin Jello was overlooked at the Golden Globes. I thought he would have been perfect nominee for a supporting actor to move because he's so good and the evil judge in the trial, the Chicago seven Totally agree. And Eddie Redmayne would've been great in there, too. But I actually thought Franklin Jell O would have been really a terrific choice. Sasha Baron Cohen. What a year for him. Obviously, the you getting supporting actor nomination for trial in Chicago seven for playing Abbie Hoffman. It's archival footage shot five years ago of a show that one a slew of Tony's The Thing with the Hollywood Foreign Press that votes on the Golden Globes is unlike the Oscars, which has thousands of real film professionals, and they're voting blocs. But they happen to, you know, get on the press list, and they go to see all the screenings for free. How did the Golden Globes gain this kind of currency that they have today? Oh, it's all the power in magic of television. They've started airing the show, I think in the mid eighties and so the only other game in town where the Oscars now Of course, we have the SAG Awards and the PJs and All these other things I have to watch. I find the words season somewhat excruciating, and this year's is going to last till April 25th when the Oscars are on, and I think like, Glenn said earlier in the show. Ah, lot of people probably haven't seen many of these movies. That's what I wanted to bring up Johnny because a lot of times the Golden Globes and and the other award shows are precursors to the to the granddaddy of them all the Oscars, but I'm looking at the five nominees here. For best motion picture drama. I have to tell you haven't heard of three of them. But maybe you have. But the five nominees with Golden Globes best motion picture drama Nomad Land. Promising young woman, the father. The trial, the Chicago Seven, for which Aaron Sorkin also got a directing nominees. Such a barren cone Gotta, you know, got an acting nominee for playing Abbie Hoffman and the fifth one is Manc, but I really don't know most of those movies. Most people won't do. The one advantage, I guess is that they're all streaming this year, so you don't have toe Russia. You know, Nebraska doesn't really have a lot of prestige Cinemas. So this year, we can watch them all. But Nomad Land is probably the favorite. Also with the Oscars, I'll tell you, it features a scene with Frances McDormand taking a dump in a van. And right now, it doesn't say Oscar I That doesn't win the Oscar. What will she do Have to say, though, if I'm not mistaken, Johnny, the father is based on a very fine play that Franklin Jello was brilliant and on Broadway a few years ago. It is. It's a French play with the same name, and this time it's a play all about a man with dementia, and we see it from his perspective. So when his daughter comes to visit the woman playing his daughter keeps changing, and we gradually realize Oh, this guy's mind is deteriorating. Now in the movie, he's played by Anthony Hopkins and Anthony Hopkins is very, very good. I do think it benefited from that theatricality of Broadway, though it's a bit of a low key movie. No one really thought it would be nominated. But it's the Hollywood foreign Press. They remember. They nominated the two Popes, which again was fine and started Anthony Hopkins. Right now. The other thing, too, though, was I was a little disappointed that my friend Franklin Jello was left out for best supporting actor because he was brilliant as the judge in the trial of the Chicago seven. He was very, very good here. Frank is very good being Just so overwhelmingly villainous, though you believe that he believes what he's saying. You've been bringing back Dracula, but that's the thing with that movie is that whole ensemble is uniformly excellent. And Just singling out Sasha Baron Cohen was probably the right choice. Remember the Oscars cheated him out of an award or even a nomination for Borat, Way back and was at 2008. So he's sort of having a bit of a resurgence now. Mm. Well, some of the things that are pretty good that got nominations. Ozark Truman. Tremendous series, the undoing and the coal Kidman Syriza, So I mean, it didn't make some pretty good choices. I just, You know, Obviously, those those aren't up for Oscar's the way best movie and actor and actresses are Right. I actually think the Hollywood Foreign press is pretty good about TV. They're usually very forward thinking they got behind streaming much sooner. I know Michael's probably upset that his friends show wasn't nominated. But what can you do? That was that, Uh, call my agent. Don't you love that? A lot of my own My show? Yeah. Oh, I love it. But how come they couldn't nominate that is it because it's French? And it's not. It's not American. Well, that's their weird thing about for the Foreign press association. Therefore, side they sideline all the foreign language films and TV shows. So like Minori is a very popular Korean film. It'll probably do much better at the Oscars. People are really irate that they put it into the foreign film category, just as they did with parasite last year. And once again they didn't nominate its star who is very, very good, probably cause they didn't bother to learn her name. Mm. Now are they gonna be able to be drunk at the ceremony this year? Because it's going to be as birth virtual right now. I'm gonna be bombed out of their minds in their living rooms or the little shacks they live in. We'll get this any polar and Tina fair gonna once again host from opposite coasts, and we're gonna have to be more grainy zoom screens and pretend to enjoy ourselves. The story is dramatized in the new Netflix film, The Trial of the Chicago Seven Franklin Jealous stars as Judge Hoffman and joins us now. Franklin Jello. Welcome. Thank you. I felt free to make him as much of a monster as he reportedly wasps. Really did act with the malice shown in the film, dismissing objections from the defense before they were made arbitrarily excluding evidence. It was enjoy to play a man who had no conscience and knew from the moment he walked in that he was going to convict them to people who say to you and maybe they do. Maybe they don't. But we've had a lot of people trying to compare what's happening recently with 1968 is there comparison? Well, well, of course there is. Look, government is always corrupt, Always all the way back to the teapot down all the way back in island country in another country's power corrupts It's a cliche, but it's true.
