"Here it is winter, which means snowshoeing and skiing in the cascade back country, And it also means a team of meteorologists keeping an eye on the weather to make sure you don't get buried in an avalanche. Our resident historian Felix been L dug into the origins of the specialized weather forecast is known as the Northwest Avalanche Center founded 45 years ago, Feelings was brought to us by the King County Library system. Good morning. Born together Northwest Avalanche center, or N wack, as some people call it a forecasting in public education partnership between the National Weather Service, the Forest Service, Washington Parks, Washington, D, O T and the outdoor recreation industry. It's a pretty decent sized operation. Now there's about 15 staff. People with an office in North Bend. The origins traced back to the early seventies, individual forest rangers and ski area operators have been dealing with mountain weather for decades, and avalanches had always been a threat. Of course. No, it's no scientist is working to U Dub Ed last repel. He was engaged to some avalanche research for the old Washington State Highway Department, and that led to the hiring of two newly minted PhDs for it was going to be a short term project. And who hope to get a lot of chances to ski. One was marked more can go on to run the Northwest Avalanche Center for more than 30 years. The other was future. King five. Meteorologist Rich Marry it. It actually came about because in the early seventies backcountry usage was starting toe Pick up But more importantly, I 93 sort of call me past have been completed. There been some avalanche problems with the construction of the highway itself. In fact, Franklin Falls Bridge actually was partially damaged by an avalanche that came down and hit it while they were doing construction. They had to build barriers uphill to protect that bridge. They also had a couple of accidents that involved private passenger cars. And they had also just opened up the North Cascades highway. I think in 1969 and D O t want to be able to keep things open and keep them safe, needed more information to be able to even know what to do Avalanche control at that point, you know, Richard wanted to work for NASA, but this was not long after the Apollo program and wound down Remember this time? The mid seventies, There's sort of a golden age of science. All these young guys like rich married mark more with their big beards and their PhDs and all the answers kind of not unlike the Richard Dreyfuss character and Jaws, a lot of like down vests and stuff. And now the early days of the northwest of Land Center were a bit of a shoestring operation early on rich marry it, and Mark Moore saw a need for more real time data. So they installed automated weather instruments, a key places in the Cascades. Such a Stevens pass, You know, places where they previously had to rely on once or twice daily human observers and they did the work themselves. I have this one thing where there was, ah, weather and spring it that the chairlift number five. They dialing by phone and use this very early modem to get the data decoded encoded. So they're really creative about creating new kinds of remote reading temperature snowfall in wind instruments, and Mark Moore says. Sometimes he had to even improvise repairs. We have an Imam Attar, the head three. Cops when we lost one of the cups, So we cut a beer can in in half and put the beer can on for one of the cups. I thought he worked for their plenty of beer cans. Yeah, no shortage of those And when they were in the field analyzing snow, we're fixing weather instruments. The office for the Northwest Avalanche Center was a couple of desks at the old Weather service offices on Lake Union. That didn't go so well. At first, the forecasters and the weather service do not like us. I mean, we were these hotshots from University of Washington. We're going to come and take the jobs that was bad enough to keep in my mid seventies. And both mark and I look like we just come out of the back country After two years. We have huge hair and huge beards. On the first couple of years. There were very few of the forecasters even speak to us they want. They want to have a steel ousted as we came, But Mark Moore says that he and rich or maybe it was their data eventually helped them win over even the crusty old weather service. Guys fortunate we had a natural within the National Weather Service. Bud Rainier, who had been the deputy mural just in charge of the National Weather Service in Seattle. He, uh, fought for us to be accepted there and Grudgingly. Even the old time forecasters accepted what we're doing because we were helping them out, visited out. Ah, lot of information of time about what's happening in the mountains. Yeah, I mean, we take for granted. Now, how much data you could get punched on your smartphone, looking up certain mountain pass.

"Will must. That's my guy that what he liked him so much. Champ is a great coach. He just was into terrible situations. I one is being the coach in waiting at Texas after Mack Brown total lose lose situation. Any gets a job that he only the wasn't consideration for because Mack Brown said he was the coach in waiting. He goes to Florida, falls flat on his face. House floor out bad situation for is arguably one of the easy like you couldn't create a place that's easier to recruit than Florida. How is that a bad situation? For a guy who's never been a head coach at the power five level to have to go to Florida after up dominated at Florida post? What was the glory years of will must live up to that he four games in a year Florida. I could win for you and the only person in America who couldn't win four games at Florida's, Matt in Gainesville, everyone else and maybe Butch Jones, but does it only win three, but but John, that's the easiest job in the country. What about? Okay. So Jim mcelwain Ron zook. They really handled it well, but Ron, didn't he go to an Orange Bowl or am I dreaming that more than four games. Oh, he had an eleven win season his first year, I believe with Meyer players, but then he ended up once he got his players, he won four. The job was too big for him at the time he he, he, he has a year with auburn's defensive coordinator and a program like South Carolina is the perfect place. You know what a lot of people say. A lot of people say that John is is will muschamp Sean Hannity, basically coming on and go. That's what I hear. When I hear the job was too big for like he really only one, three games at a season because at Florida, Kentucky games, a freebie, even give them that one's three win season bets. We're gonna take a break. We're gonna take a break. Everybody calm down eight, five, five to four to seven to eight five. That was an exciting segment. We'll take a break bags. Paul. You're listening to Paul finebaum show podcast. Back puff. I'm show that was a fun segment, eight, five, five, two, four to seven to eight five folks coming in. Talk about all kinds of things yelling at each other. It is the Paul finebaum show drew Franklin ask you questions. Somebody writes here on text machine. When I when you host Matt. My favorite part is this drew Franklin fell. He doesn't say a lot, but when he says something, he brings it. So I wanna ask him. I know this is a strange question, but if drew Franklin could recommend one television show on Netflix for me to watch what would it be? I feel like he and I have the same thought process. Somebody likes you. What would you watch on Netflix? If you could only watch Netflix seen? I watched it all. That's a tough one. I know Dan doesn't like when we talk about Ozarks, but that's about the I'm afraid is gonna cut off my shackling Dan, do you know how many people wrote me that thought you were really mean to drew an out on Friday and cutting us off during the discussion? They were like. Ten people that said you shouldn't let Dan treat you like that said, well, he's the, it's fine. We're in his house. We're in his house. I just want you to know you heard some feelings and I hope that you feel bad. I'll be feel bad about Dan. I feel really bad. All right. Thank you. Now what Netflix show would you tell this got to watch? That's the one I'm gonna go with. I'm afraid..

"Site in the region four thousand plus jobs at, this distribution center looked at century, city business sparked that, belongs to the city of Milwaukee around. Thirtieth, and capital drive and they looked that? It didn't sound like they decided to pursue. It some of that might be because of proximity to the highway it's farther away than a lot of the. Sites they look at and the other thing you mentioned the the century city. Site there's some news breaking now about about that potential us yeah the mayor's been making a big push mayor Barrett to get more jobs in century. City and there's been a speculative, industrial building that's been, mostly empty for a few years and they just landed a. Deal with good city brewing the move their corporate offices. And some warehousing there that was announced this morning so we love our beer in, Wisconsin we, love all these. All these new brewing brewing companies that are that are rising, does that make, sense for, that area I think so, I mean if you're looking for workers anything would make? Sense in that area as long as you're comfortable in the neighborhood around it and good city I'm not sure what the financial terms of the deal but they, think it's workable and they know what they're doing right let's talk about Foxconn so they're gonna do some redevelopment redesign of the downtown HQ building, there also announced another list of contractors are working with a new project. That thing continues to move down the road it does they're, gearing up and hiring contractors for their first building down in Mount Pleasant and we'll be seeing construction work start for that soon. That it's going to be a multi use building to. House. Contractors building the other who knows how many millions of square feet around him but separate, from that their North American headquarters in downtown Milwaukee they bought that building just last, month and now they're seeking a design firm to really update that, to meet their needs and to put an innovation center in there. I haven't paid attention closely enough what. Is the time line, to see a building actually open on their campus in Mount. Pleasant believe it will be next year Year next year so a year from now let's. Say. That we could we could start to have production on this thing are we any closer to this discussion I saw early on maybe no maybe you don't know. About these driverless lanes I have I think. That would. Have to be done the engineering part of it would have to be done, for that in order to make that a reality right last I spoke with the DOT says they're rebuilding those segments of the highway they're putting sensors into the ground that would at least allow. That possibility in the, future I don't know if it's going. To be full driverless cars trucks that, are sharing information with the road is they're driving on it but dare least building the highway with that potential in mind as. Somebody who talks a lot of. Elected officials plan commission members and other folks that are kind of involved in the process across, this area and crosses the state I've seen poll numbers suggest Foxconn, is not, necessarily that popular outside of the southeastern Wisconsin corridor or the I ninety four quarter between Chicago Milwaukee Do you sense that's. Changing or do you think that's going to stay that. Way for a while I know he's been a couple of recent announcements about their facilities I think it was out no clear in Green Bay You know as part of making those announcements. The governor's office is really emphasize as the. Company I mean, that this is a statewide impact as far as what kind of reaction that's gleaned I couldn't tell you often. Much of. That becomes tinged, by politics and campaign so that's probably why we're hearing about that as I said I think FOX is definitely on its way to being one of the most. Incredible projects in the state's history all, right after the break I want. To dig into a couple, of things happening in my favorite city oak creek one related to the. Land just south of what might be happening there. But, generally in that area as. Well Franklin falls into that as well we're. Joined by Sean Ryan our partner at the Milwaukee, business journal more with him next, right here WTMJ rise and shine with gene and Jay beer. Kevin Nicholson share staged Thursday night their first. Debate in the Senate Republican primary today's.
