Had been working out with my harp hero studio up until maybe a week and a half ago. Because you know, with the holidays and everything. Everyone is caught up doing other things. And I was working here just about every day. I was working out outside. I had some pictures. Just a couple pictures up on my instagram and Mr Mo Kelly R m o k e l l y and there is something exuberant ng About an exhilarating About just being outdoors, even if it's for menial tasks. I mean, you just find the joy and you take stock and notices certain things that you maybe you're doing slightly differently. So I do highly recommend getting outside and there are some things and options, which are all of our available to you Come New Year's Day specifically tomorrow. And here's just a quick list of what is open and you know by extension was closed tomorrow. Today and tomorrow prices for one hour and to our writing tours, which typically means six writers per guide, our 50 the $95 per person. That's reasonable. That's something I would do. Or maybe you want to celebrate the new year with a round round of golf. I know my brother in law. He's been itching to get back out on the links. I don't play golf. I'm horrible at it, but I'm quite sure You're probably better than me and maybe want to get in maybe nine holes or 18 holes. The city of L. A 7 18 hole golf courses, including Wilson Course in Griffith Park are open tomorrow. The Wilson course costs 17 to $28 per person, depending on what time you go, And if you know anything about golf mornings are more expensive. Also in Griffith Park. The nine hole Roosevelt Golf Courses open charging 13 to $20 per person. You got to make a rest reservation does so though so go to Gulf Got l a city dot or g'kar? Maybe you were, um maybe wanted to play some sports or something. Or just get physically active. You got pickleball tennis, paddle tennis and other sports sites. They will be open. Just go to L. A poor l a parks dot or g'kar for rules, permits and reservations again. Go to L, a parks that orc for rules, permits and reservations. L. A County. L. A County rules permit these places which are mostly outdoors in nature to be open. Something to consider beers. Most peers. Not all, I'll be more specific in just a moment. Skate parks, playgrounds, community gardens. Drive in theaters, golf courses. We talked about that places of worship batting cages. There's a batting cage place around the corner from my house. It is full every single day and I get it. Go karts, miniature golf courses, tennis, bocce ball, pickleball courts, all that kind of stuff. You may not have considered it before, but We've seen the weather get better in the past day or so, and I think the weather's supposed to be pretty good tomorrow. It might be something to consider. Just get outside and just breathe in the fresh air. It'll be a Friday afternoon going into the weekend, a good way to start off the new year. Outside. As I was saying, not all appears to be open. To that end, the Venice Beach and Cabrio Piers remain close. Now the Venice Beach boardwalk and Ocean Front walk are open. But only two workers and people who are picking up take out food or making curbside pickup. So there will be open so you can support the businesses but not open in a traditional sense. To hang out and to all when you were at a part With your daughter Recently. Was that something that you had just recently started doing or is that something that you've been consistently doing? Oh, no, no, no, no, That was just a Hey, Let's get a one off a little cooped up. That's that's a one off. We've just been in the house you know all week during the break. And I was like I was gone. Stretch your legs. And I didn't like outside. Do you black and wild? Well, I understand that, but I know your daughter and your son probably Appreciate it, you know, because this is probably a little bit more difficult to convey. Intellectually, the seriousness you know, they don't have the life experience to fully understand possibly All the contingencies and you know things that have to be taken into account. But I mean, for those people who are Maurin climbed to be outside. You have the Angeles National Forest. Except for the area's burned by the Bobcat fire. Um, that's open The San Bernadino National Forces open. We talked about Griffith Park there plenty of hiking trails, which I forgot to mention. There's acres of grass if you just want it, maybe have Ah. Don't know a food gathering a picnic of some sort. Just your family. Not like a big barbecue. Get together. You know, that's what I mean. The pony ride area is still open, which is available for Children ages like maybe 3 to 14. There's a lesion park. That's open Franklin Canyon Park in Beverly Hills. That's open. Runyon Canyon Park is open sunrise to sunset. So they're all sorts of options. I mean, the L. A County Arboretum and Botanic Garden in Arcadia. That's a great location. That's open tomorrow. But you've got to get a reservation for that. Tickets cost $15 each South Coast Botanic Garden on the PV Peninsula. That's a really good one. I like that one. That's open..

"Too. Santa claus. While you're going to be devastated. That's why from the beginning. I tried to tell like, it's a fun story. It's made up just like the her the cartoon, she watches Daniel tiger and Pepe pig. They're made up as well. They're not real. And she understands that. But she somewhere some reason Santa Claus is real. And I don't I don't wanna spoil it for. But at the same time, I kind of do want to spoil it for her. That's hilarious games as anything. But adding value to your life recently. Oh, man, so many things. All right. So I have a couple so sticking with the habits theme. There are two chrome extensions that I've used this entire year that I have loved so one is called Facebook newsfeed Radicati, which you just added to your chrome browser and you can log into Facebook. You can use it and check your friends profile you want. But there is no news feeds completely blocked. So you don't see any posts? And then the second one is called distraction for YouTube. And so you another chrome extension. You added to the browser and you can click on link and watch YouTube video, but all of the suggestive does in the sidebar blocked. Also, just like a blank screen with the the the video. So there is there is no like all right? I'm just gonna watch this one more video. Mervyn has that joker is like, you know, you go to watch a utility on the twenty minutes later, you're watching A interview. Justin, bieber's mom, and you're like, how did I get here me? It's eight hours later drooling on myself mates his bringing their second order. Podcast Sean, put a link to all the things we mentioned in the show notes today. I would appreciate it. Let's move onto right here right now. So we talk about what's going on in the lives of the minimalist. So one thing that we've been doing for the last three months of something called screen Lewis Saturdays. And it's because we we've done different experiments experiments in the past where we've gotten off social media for a month. Or we told you earlier I got rid of my cell phone for a few months, whatever. And what's a what's a smaller increment in which we can learn we can temporarily deprive ourselves for day to see what we learned from the whole process. So there's three ways to do screen the Saturday for those of you who want to take a look at it. It's just the minimalist dot com slash screen Louis, but the first way is just a like a social media fast. So you don't you're not really screen with you're saying I'm gonna stay off social media all day on Saturday because we're constantly bombarded. Right. We never stopped never stopping with social media and. Quite often. It's the first thing we reach for the morning. It's like, I gotta check Twitter Instagram real quick. And like a bunch of pictures that I didn't know existed thirty seconds ago. And so that's the first way to participate screen Saturday. It's just get all social media for one day the second way to participate as get off your computer to so no, computer, and no social media. We call that one. What do you call digital downtime? And then the third way is truly screen less. You go all the way in no screens all day on Saturday. No TV no phone, no screening porch. He's definitely for the mid west screened in porches. So the first Greenlee Saturday, Mariah. And I did I was like what are you? What are we going to do? I'm like are. We don't have. Let's go walk and see a movie, and I'm like, wait a minute. Ryan puppets. And right reenact calls. Or two. She had to be caught up on the first one. Yeah. So, you know, it's I learned a lot that I because I went to go to the car so backside just go out and we explore for the day. And we go get lost together. That's sort of the intention because we don't have GPS, and we just go out, and I don't have my phone with me. And so we'll, but it's a great way to learn a city because we only lived in LA for a year. And so you get so reliant on the device. It shows you everywhere where to go, right? And so if you need to go somewhere, you're like just go where the stupid thing tells me to go I'll drive into the lake of tells me to do. That's why you don't use apple maps, by the way. It has tried to drive into a body of water more than once only. And and so although I hear it's much better these days anyway, like we just we get lost together. But we also went to a CD store for the first time, they still exist. There's one in Hollywood where it's called me. But its giant. It's like the last bastion. It's the last stronghold of physical media and connections like combined. Consolidated. Yeah. And we bought like two or three CDs and listen to them in the car. But I realized I was just renting the CDs because we're going to use them. They'll on one CD's, I got a dollar, and I'm like, well, I'll just return this next weekend, and like get fifty cents back for it or whatever. And then if I want to buy something else essentially just renting CDs for a day because I'm not gonna hold onto them. But this this moment of temporary depravation, the whole point is like let's pause for a day at the end of the day on Saturday think about what was different right down. Like, how did you feel that feel less chaotic what did you go without and some some Saturdays? You might. I'm just gonna go without social media. I know beckstead that last Saturday and then last Saturday, we the four of us besides James are in this room, so podcast, Sean, Jordan and Ryan an I on Saturday. We did two things. One is Becks wasn't in town. Neither was LS. So we spent about three hours searching for a payphone turns out payphones don't exist anymore, and we found one finally. And then it was not there. It was like just a shell of you know, there was no phone and it was just the pay phone booth. I realized that superman would have nowhere to change these days. He would be really sick in Neo would totally be screwed. Yeah. He would not be able to get out of the matrix. And and so we started going around and just like asking people at different coffee shops. Ryan was hanging out the window wears a payphone. We spent like three hour searching for a payphone. And then we went over to where the Franklin canyon. Yeah. Franklin canyon park. And is that a super eight see if I can put this? So Jordan has this old super eight camera that takes film. It's a relic man yet it. Original super if you do eighteen frames per second. You can film for nine minutes with this thing. So we filmed a video about screen Lewis Saturdays, and it was and we use a Sean has old like twenty dollar cassette tape recorders. So we went fully analog screen with Saturday. Because like we Jordan was filming with that empire watch on YouTube. You can see the camera holding by the way. Yeah. Yeah. And then, yeah, they'll there will be a behind the scenes clip that Jordan puts out about how we filmed that. But the craziest part was when we're filming it. I think was when Shawn had with his recorder had like, you know, hold. Just perfectly out of the frame. This for sound like substantial, right? It's actual metal. I feel you could just load a clip into this and hurt someone. You don't wanna do that your hometown? It was we spend the day doing that. And then I shit you not and you'll see this in whatever video we end up putting out we'll put a link to it in the show notes. But the very end we driving out Franklin canyon getting ready to drive these guys home, and we drive pass an actual payphone Beverly Hills in Beverly Hills. All right. We're payphone would be right. I knew for a fact there was a payphone on Highland and Franklin avenue. Yeah. Oh in Hollywood. But Josh refused to get dysentery. Respect payphones is like what we found several payphone found one that was still intact, but didn't work than work. And we found the one in Beverly Hills, and I was able to call I was able to call back in and I talked to on the phone and Ella was so confused because she'd never talked to me on the phone before I realized that she couldn't understand. And she said why can't I see you right now? I said because I'm on a payphone. She's like what's that? And the so no, I'm not we're not out here. Saying deprive yourself of technology. What we're saying? Sometimes we could step back from technology to figure out how to use it more deliberately because sometimes these habits have just come into our life. I'm going to get up and check Twitter, I'm going to get up and do this with my phone. I'm going to reach reach for my phone sixty times a day. And all of a sudden, it is a habit that is getting in the way of what we truly wants. So check out the video. We did about screen the Saturday. You can find that in the show to the episode before we move onto the rest of the right here right now stuff. I just want to say thanks to James clear for joining us today. And if you all are listening to this that I would encourage you to fall him. He's James clear on Twitter at James underscore, clear on Instagram and James clear on Facebook as well James, clear dot com. His book is called atomic habits. You can check it out wherever you get books these days, and and you've got to habits academy course over James, clear dot com as well. If people need some help additional help with. With getting their habits in shape. I think they can check out the habits academy over James, clear dot com. James thank you so much for being able to. Yeah. No. I really appreciate. It was great by the way need ask you for a dollar because this is our last chance Ryan. So we're from a city called Dayton, Ohio and James grew up in Hamilton, Ohio, which is right down the street from Dayton, Ohio and he lives in Columbus. Now. So right down the street from Dayton, Ohio as well Ryan. And I are the west side of Dayton, which we did not grow up in the west side of Dayton. But the west side of Dayton is one of the largest food deserts in the country. Forty percent of the population of Dayton proper lives on the west side of Dayton. And there's not a single grocery store in the entire west side of date. So thing about forty percent of one of the largest cities in the United States. Does not have access to healthy food. Right. They have access to convenience store food. They can get you know, Cheetos and Rico's some fast food. Yeah. You can you can get some fast food. They can get liquor at the at the local corner store, but they don't have access to vegetables liquor dieted. His doesn't work. You look great, man. Speaking of bad habits. Yeah. Dive into all of our bad habits from our twenties. It's a totally different episode. That was the addictions episode. Did that one? Yeah. So what we're trying to do is we we did this thing over Christmas where people could buy a brick to help us build this grocery store. We've we've raised close to one hundred thousand dollars or we're not there yet this last hundred thousand dollars we need to build this three million dollar grocery store on the west side of Dayton. It's called Jim city market. We partner up with the folks at Jim city market. We're trying to raise the final hundred thousand dollars to build this thing. And so we're looking for audience to do is buy brick for a friend or family member on behalf or on behalf of yourself even. So if you're interested in helping us contribute and meaningful way Ryan, and I are donating twenty five thousand dollars for our own money. Buying twenty five thousand bricks you should see the other podcast room. We have here. Like, we think you you didn't understand the metaphor. Although L she's been we go on walks together. She is trying to pick a bricks and hand them to me. Now, this will help your grocery store. And and so if you want to help us out the last chance, so we could really use your help didn't make it to one hundred thousand dollars. This an example of what you talked about earlier on with failure. Like, we we fail. We didn't hit our hundred thousand Mark by end of the year. But it certainly a whole lot better getting to like seventy thousand dollars then us getting zero dollars. Right. And so you into this and you want to help out donate a dollar donate. However, much money, you have it'd be really helpful. Just go to them minimalists dot com slash Dayton. And that will get you over to the donation page for Jim city market. You can get more information over there as well. Also on YouTube right now, besides our podcast, which you can comment on. If you wanna comment on the subsoil, you can do over YouTube dot com slash the minimalists on our YouTube channel, you find quickey episodes of the minimalist podcast, you can find living room conversations or Ryan. And I sit down answer one question at a time in our living rooms also house tours of Ryan's of my places coming soon. Also, there is a new poll that we have each week on YouTube. You could vote for which videos, you would like to see next on our YouTube channel, and we're doing something called simple Sundays on our website and also in your Email box. If if you are new writings or any new show notes that come out for the podcast, just go to the minimalist calm, and in your Email address at the top will never send you junk or spam advertisements because all of that stuff is gross. Ryan what else you got for us as usual? I just want to encourage people to read more and get informed. Oh, and here's some voicemail. Comments tips from our listeners. Emma from Adelaide in Austria. Now, I have a bit of encouragement for anyone who is struggling to get rid of books. I have worked in the book industry for over ten years now and made less to say I had thousands with out of control. I recently started calling them.
