"Of the miracle wood coffee with Chris coming away with the win that afternoon and he will try to get the win once again tomorrow at Laurel in the private terms one of 5 stakes on their card tomorrow afternoon. Welcome back to the weekend stakes preview here on HR and Bobby Newman with bob nastanovich. Let's get back to that Laurel park card bob race 6 tomorrow at Laurel as the $75,000 not for love, the Maryland bread or sired four year olds and up, sprinting 6 furlongs on their main track. We've got a field of ten going to post and we've got another 8 to 5 shot on the morning line in eastern bay. 8 to 5 deservedly so eastern bay is 19 for 54 lifetime, 12 or 29 at 7 furlongs. He's won 13 times at Laurel. This is the definitive specialist. He's a 9 year old, and if anything he seems better at 9 than he did at 7 and 8, judging by his form, in fact, he's so good that he beat open company in the general George here in February 18th, and then ran right back and trainer Norman cash is keeping him really busy, sent him to aqueduct for the grade three Tom fool and he ran a very respectable race beaten two legs into fourth. This is definitely his ballpark in his race to win as it's almost like the race exists for him wonderful worse eastern bait. I just can't imagine him getting beaten a spot. All right, so we're taking a little bit of a different look on this race eastern bay, certainly coming out of the best two races and probably the one to beat if he runs his best races. I'm not a 100% sure we're going to see that race tomorrow. I think his last race where he finished only two lengths behind Lil Vic in the grade three Tom fool was a big effort. I don't know if we're going to get that big effort again off what is just two weeks off since that race. So I'm going to go with a little bit of a price in number ten breezy gust for hose away arce. He's the trainer and you former jockey host way RC, by the way. Dexter haddock abort breezy gust who has been doing his damage down at parks of late, finishing first or second in each of his last three starts, albeit against offer competition than what he's going to see tomorrow, but I think speed figure wise, he's right there with these. I like the outside post, and he looks like a horse who's in good form right now. He's been first or second, 15 of his 29 career starts and I don't think he's ever been better than he is right now. So maybe this is the time breezy gust can get the job done in the not for love. Race 7 tomorrow at Laurel is the Harrison E Johnson memorial, one of 5 stakes on the card. Bob, how did you see this one? Yeah, it's nice to see him jump into open company here. I mean, the Maryland breads are apparently there's some very talented ones, but this race has a nice wide open look with a lot of very good older horses. I landed on a horse called Nimitz class. He's also a short price here trained by Bruce cap Kravitz having good meat, JV and Toledo has been riding extremely well on the circuit for years. Just this horse seems to be going from strength to strength at the moment. He's 7 for 13 lifetime, appears to like a route of ground more than a sprint and this one turned mile just seems kind of ideal even though he's never tried it. He just he's in great form and he's very difficult for me to oppose this very talented four year old son of munnings who looks like he might be going places. All right, so Nimitz class for bob in this race. I thought it was a tough race, by the way, as I mentioned, the Harrison need Johnson memorial. It's a $100,000 purse, and it is a one turn mile. 9 to 5 the morning line on Nimitz class. I went just to hear the inside of that with our nation on parade who was second to Nimitz class last time out. Nimitz class was 9 to 5 that day on an Asian on parade was 5 to two, and they ran one two and Nimitz class was clearly better that afternoon. I just happened to think that now our nation on parade has some racism his past performances, more good races in his past performances. I should say the Nimitz class does limits class, maybe just better right now. He's won 7 of his 13 starts in his last two have been very, very good, but overall, I trust our nation on parade a little bit more and he's going to be a little bit of a better price. So I'm going to try him in the Harrison E Johnson memorial. Moving ahead to race 8, the beyond the wire $100,000 on the line for the three year old Phillies going the one turn mile. Field of 7 going to post in this race bob and the two to one choice on the line. Number three, lady Lowry. Interesting stories in this race pretty interesting group of three year old Philly, some very well bred ones, the 7 horses are three to one in here. In the morning line, Cairo sugar has won two in a row at aqueduct. She's a very good New York bread. She's by a Cairo prince out of the fantastic Frank stronach owned who are spun sugar who is a multiple grade one stakes winner and kind of interesting when you see a horse that's this really bred to sell for only $6000, so she must have some sort of confirmation fault or something, but it hasn't stopped her becoming a very good race horse. She's in fantastic form right now. She's got good speed, another interesting entrant is the horse you mentioned the three lady Lowry. I'm gonna pick her. She's a three year old Philly by mudding. It's kind of amazing to me that mornings has gotten a $100,000 stud fee but he deserves that he's been a fantastic stallion. This is a wind star home bred trained by Elliot Walden's son William, a new trainer he's at the belief 31 32 years old. She's made two starts at turfway on the synth. Came from way back, really showed an impressive turn of foot and her first try and then dust today a similar field going 6 and a half. It's going to be difficult for her to tackle new surface. The main thing and she's stretching out from 6 and a half to a mile, but the way she runs, I think, that everything will fall into place for and I think she might be just too talented for this bunch. All right, and she's got revolutionary on the damn side, which certainly entitles her to go a little bit further than the 6 and a half furlongs where she's raised her last two. I went to the rail number one pharaoh's baby gile for Brittany Russell and jebby and delito or heavy on Toledo.

"Always on this Saturday morning, pedia with the call of last year's Pegasus World Cup won by now windstar stallion. Life is good. And boy, was he ever good that afternoon? Well, Frank stronic has worn plenty of hats during his time in racing. He has been praised. He has been vilified and he is certainly been questioned, but with every move that he has made, his focus has always been on keeping the interests of horsemen and the sport in the forefront, both on the racing and the breeding side of the business. And Frank is kind enough to spend a little time with me here this morning. He is with me now on the horse racing radio network. Frank, good morning, appreciate the conversation, my friend. Good morning. Nice to meet you. Very nice to have you with me. And you know Frank, I know I've told you this story before, but I don't think I can tell it enough. I want to start by saying, thank you for all the support that you and the team at Adina springs have provided to me and to our network over the nearly 20 years we've been doing this. On Thursday, we were honored with a third eclipse award four years ago, we were honored with a sovereign award for our coverage of the queen's plate at woodbine. And there have been countless individuals and companies who have played a major role in the success in the longevity of our network, but Frank stronach and Adina springs have been a major catalyst because I remember Frank wanting to broadcast the 2006 Don handicap before anybody knew who the horse racing radio network was. And the folks at Gulfstream were saying, okay, we don't know who you are. We don't know what you want to do. I went to you at the keenland sale. And I said, Frank, here's what we're trying to create. And you looked at me and you said, that's good for racing. You can go do it. And Frank, all these years later, and all the success we've had a lot of it has to do with kicking off with you and Gulfstream park. So thank you. Yeah. You're welcome. You're done a great job. Well, I appreciate that. And I remember Jack brothers being involved at adena and now dermott cardi, who was the director of sales. You know, Frank, let's start with the breeding side of things because you purchased adena springs in Paris in 2005. You opened in 2007. And some of the iconic names in our sport were housed there at Adina springs. It was what your business was built upon. Awesome, again, go sapper. What was the driving force for you at that time? With starting adena springs. Well, the traffic force was, you know, I had a business for the technology and the guy kind of built on them but also systems or components. So I just wanted to have something which is connected with nature. So I know I love one time and the newspapers was for sale. I wanted to have a riding horse and I went to the first farmer but the first horse and I was that was a Saturday morning and did the afternoon I was ready jumping. But that farmer had a few race horses. It took me the race to act the first time at the racetrack and I found it fascinating. I bought a farm town and I bought some fruit meds and some yelling and yeah so I just found it interesting and I found it great. What was it? You said you found it interesting when you went to the racetrack. What was it that first attracted you to the sport? Well, I like cowboy movies, right? So cowboys are always at some point. And but the latest stage, I was exposed to racing and I found it at hundred very interesting. And most of all, what's this closely connected with nature? And I just found it fascinating and I started to buy some mayors and yelling and I was very lucky the first few years. I had some champions and I started buying race tracks. How did you come across horses like awesome again and ghost pepper? Frank, those are legendary names in our sport. Well, I always said that it doesn't matter how smart you are. There's a little bit of luck in life, right? And so yeah, I was lucky. I tried to if you tried to do the right thing over and over and you have more luck, right? But I think you still need a little luck. And so I've been lucky and. I found it exciting and so when I went to the racetracks, I kind of thought there were run kind of not the best way you know when you usually when you go to the director's room, the food is great. Everything is great. And but when you go back with a grandstand there, the food is lousy. So I remember first time I went to San Anita, right? I had a horse that had a run in the state race. And when I wasn't a drag couldn't get in, you know, because I did wear a die. So anyway, they found that. Luck again about a place that changed the rules. Well, and you've done it and you've done it very, very successfully, Frank. One more comment because I told dermott, I said, you know, dermott, we need to when Frank joins me, we have to spend a couple of minutes just talking about the roster that you've assembled north of the border at Adina springs north with American guru and point of entry and shaman ghost in silent name. Those horses are iconic stallions in Canada now. So talk about making the move from the Kentucky circuit in the Kentucky breeding business up to Canada. Sure, I still have plus I still have a farming Kentucky. And they still have stallion there. But there is some great breeding programs. If you have Canadian bread and well, I'd love for you and my family to live here and so I've done my part to keep horse racing up this thing here in Canada, but I still have a farm in Kentucky and well conducted when it comes to racing is a very important place, a very important state. And it will be so in the future.

"Which horse you feel has the best chance to upset the Pegasus World Cup today with our poll question. You know, when the concept of the Pegasus World Cup was first introduced in January of 2016, it was the brainchild of then trying to group president Frank stronic. His initial proposal called for the race to be a mile and a quarter to be run at either Gulfstream or Santa Anita in mid to late January, and it wouldn't, the timing of the race was perfect because it wouldn't interfere with the breeders cup. We've seen that. The timing is exactly like it was proposed. Doesn't interfere with the breeders cup horses gives them plenty of time to recover. Come back and run this race. And then use it as a prep for the Dubai World Cup. If they choose to go that route, the timing is also perfect because of the way the breeding season in North America is set up. The breeding sheds open right around Valentine's Day. So it makes for a perfect last stop if a horse like, say, cyber knife, for example, this year is going to go off to stud. We saw gun runner do it. When the race debuted in 2017, it was not a mile and a quarter, as it was proposed, it was a mile and an 8th and it has been a mile in 8th, and it carried a purse of $12 million. Today, that distance remains the same, but the purse well, nothing to sneeze at, is $9 million less. I'm going to welcome Frank stronic to the show at 9 40 eastern. Have a chance to visit with him about being somewhat of a visionary in the sport, a thoroughbred racing. And look, Frank has worn a lot of hats. He's been questions. He's been criticized. He's been vilified, but he's also been praised for a lot of things that he's been able to do. And when Frank wrote, the $87 million check to purchase Gulfstream park in 1999. Remember, it came on the heels of him buying Santa Anita. And it was the next step in what was being called his racing empire. Of course, he would go on to acquire pimlico Laurel, et cetera. After that point, and that would bolster his empire even further. And if you recall, Frank's aggressive moves really had the industry on edge at that time. One man, one entity controlling all of those major racing venues couldn't be wouldn't be. Good for the sport. Then came the announcement that Frank tronic was going to tear down the old Gulf Stream grandstand. And replace it with a much smaller grandstand and add restaurants and a shopping area on the Gulf Stream property. Are you kidding me? Take away the parking, take away and at first it was a total nightmare. As you can imagine, that went over like a lead balloon. But also the exact decision that allowed all of us myself included to begin to get a glimpse inside the mind of Frank stronic. And start to understand what his vision for the sport really was. And I hate it. I'll be the first to say it. I hate it. And I did say it back then. On this very same show, hated, despised, what I saw when we went to Gulfstream for our first broadcast of the Don handicap back in 2006, you couldn't even tell there was a racetrack anywhere around because of all the construction equipment blocking the view where the shopping and restaurant area has now been built. But once everything was completed. That vision and the concept began to grow on me and I know it did for several other people in the sport too. Let's face it. The reality is that with the popularity of 80 W's and the ease of betting races from your couch from the golf course, sitting in your car outside the grocery store. Yeah, I've done that. The need for the large grandstands at racetracks just isn't there anymore. Yeah, I know. It sucks on big race days, such as Pegasus and Florida Derby day, but outside of a couple of days each year, how often does a racetrack fill those seats? It just doesn't happen anymore. Large grandstands on a day in, day out basis are unnecessary in this current day and age. They're wasted space that can be used for other things to enhance the fan experience when attending the races. That's just the reality. I'm going to look forward to talking to Frank later, again, 9 40 eastern is when he will join me here on this program. All right, so here's what's ahead, coming up at 8 15. You're going to hear an interview with Gulfstream announcer PDL. Pete joined our Bobby Newman yesterday afternoon on our Friday betting with Bobby show. And he previewed the Pegasus World Cup races today. We'll get a chance to kick things off in that fashion. 8 35, I will welcome Jose Antonio Gomez. The newly crowned eclipse champion apprentice jockey. That should be a fun interview. 9 o'clock. Jackie florent Giroux, the newest member of the 2000 win club will join me to look back on his favorite career moments and talk about cyber knife in today's Pegasus World Cup 9 20 trainer Ryan Hansen, who has a horse in the Pegasus World Cup turf, and he has a horse in tomorrow's San Vicente. As a matter of fact, Ryan is the only trainer in tomorrow's San Vicente, not named Bob Baffert. Yeah, 5 horse field, four backwards, and a Hansen. Ryan Hansen will be with me at 9 20 to talk about his runners this weekend. And again, Frank stronach at 9 40 10 o'clock Joe Christopher joins me for this week's edition of the twin spires triple play. Kurt packer stroll through racing history comes up at ten 20 and Dale Romans and Tim wilkin join me at ten 30 eastern for I ask they answer a lot of fun topics there. I'm going to ask them about some of those eclipse categories.

"Pay attention to the little things, the little details, you got to be on top of pretty much everything, but the little things are things that might get away from you. You know, like, just got to be up on make sure to sound this and those guys got a lot of horses. I only have ten voices here. So it's not hard for me to keep up with each horse myself. I don't have to have a system train area, somebody. I can keep up, I watch them all train. So I can keep up with pretty much what I have here. What if guys it's training two, 300 hand horses, God bless. I mean, they have to have good health. For me, I can keep up with everything here. Myself, every little detail, I pay attention to it. Which is not right. I know myself. I don't have to catch it from secondhand, my phone call from assistant trainer in the United States, something like that. No, I respect what all those other trainers do. I don't think I can handle it 300. Well, I was going to ask you that question because I know you're very happy just having one owner to train for. You talked about that, but would you want more horses? Would you want 20 or 30 if highly crest had that many? Yeah, I mean, that wouldn't be. Too much to handle because when I was with Joey seno through, we always had 30, 40, 50 hand horses, and pretty much just like Dan. I do now like you have to pay attention. You have to stay up on things. More because, I mean, more now because my name is on the program and then you have your working for someone and they trust you to look after things when they're not there. So it's. Pretty pretty hard to do if that short trainer that has hundred to 12 voices. You don't have to have someone else. You have to have a few more fair eyes, but right now you're 30 horses, I think I could handle that, but I'm glad we don't have them, but yeah. It would certainly make things a lot more interesting on your end to have to keep up with that many more horses. And you talk about big operations. Like Ben Perkins and Philippines certainly Joe or Sino and Joe, when Joe really had it rolling back in his prime was like what, 1999, 2000, those years there. He was training horses like perfect staying in red bullet and he had macho uno who you mentioned. The breeders cup juvenile winner. You know, those horses, my goodness. And you were there when he had all those horses too. What were those years like? No, I came, I came I was around Montreal and red bullet. I've never was around purpose Jane. But no, they were they were good they were good times. You know, when I first came to work for Joe, I didn't come to work as an assistant training I was working for him as a group for maybe 6 months and then he had to read a go to killing with a string of horses. So I went over there with those horses and then we went on from there, but. Joe wish probably wanted to first people I worked for now, we're calling a friend before I worked for him. I'd known Joe before I went to work for we were. I mean, I will call him a friend before I even went to work for him. We was pretty replaced off altogether in every day. But I knew him before I went to work for him. He was asked to take a string to Keenan and kind of oversee that string. How cool was that? That had to be a wonderful vote of confidence and had to boost your confidence a lot too. Yeah. It did. I'd known. I'd known Joe for a long time. He had one of my best Friends and he always will be. When. His contract was over with them, maybe the following year that time and then he had a heart surgery, I had to look after everything from the for a while until he got back, it was a learning experience because now it was all in my hand to train those voices. And a lot of owners didn't want that. They wanted Joe to offer some clientele. But he gained some too because people like. Left kept staying through the bad timing he was having, but. It was tough. It was just then, you know, after the distracted contract was over and they didn't voices in the end right away after they had a contract was over, but we stuck together. We got down to golf stream to one year and we had a real good year down there. And we went like 5 races in one, one day. But that was more of a learning experience. That probably put me at ease when I got this job because I knew I can handle it, you know? Yeah. Yeah, I mean, yeah, you're a 100% right because that's a tough situation. You have a guy like Frank stronach who has all those nice horses with him and all of a sudden they're not in the barn anymore and you have to kind of go back to square one. But it's interesting to hear you say that too Eddie that it gave you maybe some confidence now that you're doing this on your own because that's about as bad as it gets for a trainer to go from the highest highs to the lowest lows and have to start over again. You know, now that, okay, we've been through that. I've been through it as part of Joe's team. I can handle this. I can build this thing and we can get this going in the right direction. And you have. Yeah, and. The thing is you have to have that owner that trust you. And I'm hoping to ask me, I'm pretty sure he does. Tell me a little bit more about John. I don't think we've really spent much time talking about John mazza, who as I mentioned passed away in 2000, was it was 2020, not 2020. Yeah, 2020. Tell me a little bit more about John and the type of person he was in the trainer. I always thought he was a good trainer, but I found out he was a better person when I was able to move on with Joe as you know and. Would stop and we would just talk. Bursting out of his mouth, are you okay? Are you doing okay? Every day he would stop and talk, talk to me while I was, I was here at mom and Joe was in Florida and we had a stream of horses here in the bond, but every morning he would stop and talk. He was a great person. You know, I

"And I was going to bet on them and just try to have about 15 tickets. And of course, being a gambler at that time in your young Cavaliers had a horse in that I thought was an easy winner. His name was Carney's point. And I decided that some of my money on carnage points and my yeah, if I recall correctly, he got beat and I only ended up with three tickets on secretary, but that was all right three was enough. But it was a great experience. Yeah. Yeah, I can imagine. But just to be so close to him, didn't you even witness a young lady pulling a piece of hair out of secretariat? Well, that's a long time ago, but I do recall that. I was in the paddock. I was grilling a horse named fave count. It was one of I was very young. And so I was grooving this horse and I was working for Jerry Levine. He got a more experienced room to take the horse to the paddock. So I was walking around on the other side. And I remember turning and watching their secretary in front of me and they said he reaches up and just kind of turned one of his hair from his tail into her finger and just kind of give it a little Paul and he didn't even yeah, I didn't move an inch in L and of course she got something to remember for the rest of her life I guess. But I remember seeing that and it was quite I was impressed with how come he was in the paddock. He not much bothered him. Yeah, people will do just about anything for a souvenir like that, especially from a great horse, like secretariat visiting with trainer Dan vela here on trainer talk presented by facing tipton if you're just tuning in, Dan has been doing this since 1972, so a 50 year career and he has so many wonderful stories. Real quick before we move on, Dan, I want to pass this along a bit of housekeeping here for our listeners. This show, of course, presented by our friends at phasic tipton, facing tipping getting ready to host their winter mix sale in Lexington, Kentucky, which is supposed to start next Monday. We are under a ice storm advisory here in the bluegrass. So because of that phasic has decided to push the sale back one day. So the sale instead of being Monday and Tuesday next week, it will now be Wednesday Tuesday and Wednesday. February 8th and 9th to allow everybody to get in here safely and I think a wonderful move by facing tipton. Let's talk a little bit more about your relationship with Frank stronach in the horses that you had the chance to be around with him. What do you remember about the first time he met Frank and how that relationship came to be with you training for him? Well, I had I had it started a gentleman that worked for him. His name was Don Amos. And I had trained a little bit for I was just getting going and I had training to horse that dawn had sold at auction. And I got to know dawn, he would come by the barn. So yeah, I called him up one day, and I said, general Don, I'd love to get to meet Frank, strong. And I'd love to, you know, I mean, you got to be aggressive sometimes. You got to sell yourself. And Dons got me an interview with Frank and that's where it all started. We sat down and talked and we kind of hit it off right away. My father had been a machinist. He was there was a connection there. We talked a little bit about that. Frank was a machinist when he started out and yeah, next thing I know I had four horses in the barn and had some great success with a couple of them and it moved up from there. Which are some of the horses that you're never going to forget when you think back on your career, Dan, whether they were a dean of spring's horses or horses that were owned by other people that you were around, but some of the horses, when you say, boy, I've been doing this 50 years. I'm never going to forget this horse, or these horses. Yeah. One of my first jobs, I trained for Steve stab. He had affiliate names, agriculture. She was not a very big silly, not imposing. But might have been the fastest horse. I was ever around. We took her to I was training kind of in tandem with another trainer at the time, and for her staff role. And we took her to Europe and she got beat ahead and Frito obeyed a long shot. She was an absolute rocket. So I'll never forget her. You know, probably the best horse I was ever around. Well, not probably. He was ghost sapper was, you know, I mean, if you categorize horses allowance horses, their stay courses, there's grade one horses. There's classic horses. Then there's that category that's kind of mysterious almost. And I called them freaks. They're just rigs. They do things that your whole life, you watch horses and they can't do them. Secretary, it was that way. And I go shopper was much the same. I mean, you could watch him and some of his races and he would, you know, he'd run three quarters of a mile in sprint time. And then just keep on going. And horses shouldn't be able to do those things. And he could. I had the pleasure of breaking him as a baby and getting him ready. And send him out to Bobby frankel and it was kind of he was a bit of a lazy horse, so it took a while for him to really clue in, but of course, Bobby was one of the greatest of all times. And we would chat about him and stuff like that, very interesting, but if I'm not mistaken, first start of his life, I think he run one of the best buyers for a first time starter still ever. And ghost rapper was he was a top end horse that you only see a couple in your lifetime..

"Yeah, I mean, obviously it's a small sample, but there's an awful lot of pretty good horses in there. If someone puts a gun to my head and puts these horses in the starting game, I'm picking arrogate. I mean, when he won his Pegasus in 2017, it was the, you know, he had he was in the midst of that real, real solid part of his career and he'd be one of the Travers he won the classic. And then he won the Pegasus and track record time, one by four and three quarter length. And if these horses are all at their best, I'm picking arrogate to win and I think he would run down Nick's go to when to win it. It would be a great race with 5 horses in it, but my pick would be arrogate. Dale, no doubt, no doubt when they all ran their best, and they were on top of their game air gate was I think head and shoulders above them. He was just a special horse. And what he did and do about World Cup is not supposed to happen when you stumble that badly out of the gate and you're used to running close to the pace and you're way back dead last and run down a horse like gun runner. That was a spectacular race that I've ever seen. I think he was a very special horse and I would put him on top of gun runner on that group. Yeah, and boy, you can't fall. I mean, any of those horses, I guess mucho gusta would probably be the longest shot of the 5 if you were gonna put them all in the gate together. But you look at gun runner and what city of light did and then we know how good nicks go is and he might be the first horse to win the race twice in his Tim said it's a small sample. But wow, what a group. This race has really become, I think what Frank stronach envisioned it to be, even though it's a completely different structure than it was when he first began the race in 2017. But in terms of the race itself, it's become an important race on the calendar every year, right? In a popular race that's filled a void in racing. I mean, before, it's really kind of affordable. We get cranked up in the last two rounds at the Derby perhaps. It was kind of a low. I think it's a perfect thing. And it looks like it's gonna be packed over here tomorrow. And who was just for small trivia question, I would hope that our esteemed colleague would get this right. Who finished second to move Joe Gusto in 2020. Yeah, it was a lot of horse that mister freeze. And cash me a nice little paycheck. 7 to 7 to one if I recall correctly. Yeah. Exactly. But it was a lot of money in the bank account for that law. He's a good horse, mister freeze. He was. Because I remember that. I like that. I'd like to have all the if I could just reverse my seconds with guess Bob Baffert in my career. I'm being an Hall of Fame already because he beat me a lot of times. That's another question for another day. Will Dale Romans be in the Hall of Fame? That's up to you guys. You're gonna press the press up to you press people. After he gets that Kentucky Derby win this year, that's all we need. Boy, we're just on the Dale Roman's bandwagon. Right. So I will love fast here. Yeah, we did that last week with you be the host and Dale took a bunch of questions from HR and nation. That was a lot of fun. That was fun. Let's talk about another horse. Hot rod Charlie, who, you know, look, he had a really strong three year old campaign. He is not in the Pegasus World Cup. He certainly could have been instead his connections opted to send him to Dubai early to prep for the march 26th dude by World Cup. He is pointed for next weekend's Al maktoum challenge in Dubai as his prep race for the World Cup. Do you like the decision or dislike the decision to send hot rod Charlie over there so early? Dale? I think it was a good plan. I don't think he thought there were two better horses probably here. For this race, he might as well go there and get a jump on him. You know about world cups, they want a lot of different wages. People show up there ten days out. People show up there two months out. And I know Steve prep two of his horses, Carlin and I think gun runner both over there. And then so I think it probably is a good thing. I've been over there several times and definitely longer there, the more acclimated you are in a better chance you have. So I think you did the right thing. Timmy. Yeah, of course you'd love to be able to see hot rod Charlie running the Pegasus. I mean, it would certainly spice the race up a little bit because right now it's Nick's going life is good and everybody else, but you know, Doug O'Neill probably has 12 million reasons why he wanted to go over to Dubai early because he wants to get that horse acclimated and the best possible shape that he can to run in the $12 million to buy World Cup. I mean, he just had to work the other day and William Buick was on him. I guess he'll ride him in the prep. I have no problem with it with him being over in Dubai because if he were to win the Dubai World Cup and comes back, what does that do for the older horse division later on in the year if you have the Dubai World Cup winner going up against the likes of the life is good? Unfortunately, Nick's goal wouldn't because he's going to the farm after the Pegasus. But I think it can only benefit racing if his cloud rod Charlie runs big over in Dubai and then comes back. Yeah, throw flight line into that mix too. It's going to be exciting here for everybody. You know, one thing about going early, I think is when you come back, you have less you have less problem transitioning back in the U.S. when you've been there a long time. I think that short trip over and back ten days two weeks apart it can be hard on them. All right, we'll find out in four weeks if that was indeed the right decision for hot rod Charlie..

"Gun runner has the second fastest the following year one 47.41. Now the tracks are different, the conditions are different. Things change from year to year. But the fact that arrow gate completed the myelin and 8th and one 46.83. If he would run back to that effort, he would be a convincing winner in that fantasy Pegasus World Cup. But it's an interesting question. I mean, nicks go, if he can pull it off today, he'll be the only horse to win consecutive runnings to win two runnings of the Pegasus. And we know how good nicks go has become but his next go really in the same league as an arrow gate, or a gun runner. When city of light showed up and won it, he was on a roll for Mike McCarthy. So it's an intriguing question. Arrow gate, I would think would end up being the favorite in that race over gun runner. And then nicks go in city of light, probably close after that and then mucho Gusto the longest shot. But if you were to put them on the gate, it's an interesting it's an interesting way to look at it with just 5 runnings. But boy, those are big names, aren't they? That race has really become. A major stepping stone, not just to the Dubai World Cup, but a major race in the sport. And I know it's not what it was when Frank stronach originated the concept in 2017. It was a $12 million purse. When gun runner won it, it was a $16 million purse, city of light. It was 9, and now it's down to three. And there have been changes to the way. The race is set up in structure, but it is still a major race on the calendar for the older horses following the breeders cup and in between the breeders cup and the Dubai World Cup. Shifting gears, how would you like to be trainer Kenny mcpeak right now? How'd you like to be in his position? Can make peak. What a few months it's been for him. He's going to send out dash attack in today's grade three Southwest stakes. That's a race that we'll see the winner get ten points toward a spot in the starting gate of The Kentucky Derby. Ken's gonna be here at 9 40 eastern. You'll hear more for him talking about dash attack. But he has three horses currently in the top ten on the Derby points list. Including dash attack, he's one of them. But he also has rattle and roll. Let's not forget about him. Rattle and roll is a horse he's going to talk about when he joins me in just a little bit. And he has smiled happy, who many people feel is kind of a buzz horse for The Kentucky Derby right now. Kind of a wise guy type of horse if you look at it that way. And these standings will change. Kenny's hoping that they all stay where they are, but currently rattle and roll is third in the points. Smile happy would be 6th and dash attack is 9th. So he has three in the top ten. He also has tis the bomb. Who is gearing up for his three year old debut? And a horse that made a name for himself racing at grass last year, Kenny. Thanks that he's even better on dirt. So he's going to begin his path to The Kentucky Derby, racing on dirt this year. Kenny is going to talk about all of them when he joins me. Again, 9 40 eastern. So make sure you stay tuned for that. I'm also going to talk with national hbp, CEO, Eric hammel back at 9 20. He'll talk about their annual convention at local on coming up on March 1st, that's first through the 5th. And then tomorrow, you have the Houston racing festival. It's Sam Houston. Nick Tamara is going to be with me in just a few minutes to kick off the show at 8 15 eastern. 7 stakes races, two of those are grade three, including the Houston ladies classic. So a lot of things to get to going to cover a lot of ground. We'll talk about a lot of things. In the world of racing, there was a lot happening this weekend. There's more than just the Pegasus World Cup. But that's certainly we're many eyes will be focused later today. That is our poll question. Who wins? Today's Pegasus World Cup at Gulfstream park. And I'll give you a few choices. The three favorites are likely favorites. Nicks go, life is good. Sir Winston, and then the fourth category, none of the above. And if you choose that one, please specify, let me know which course you think pulls off an upset in today's Pegasus World Cup. Who wins today's Pegasus World Cup at Gulfstream. Next go, life is good. Sir Winston, or none of the above. You can go to our on Twitter, horse racing radio network on Facebook, or you can email the show. If you don't do social media to let me know your thoughts that's Mike horse racing radio .NET. And while you're emailing, how about sending me a couple of questions for NBC announcer and TV analyst, Larry Coleman, who is going to be joining me at ten eastern for this week's edition of UB the host. When I turn the show over to you, you can call into the show, ask a question of Larry. He will answer it live here on the equine forum this morning, or if you prefer, you can send me the question. Via email, or social media, and we will make sure we pass that question along for you. But that comes up ten eastern UB the host with Larry coma. So a lot of things to get to. It's a busy show and it begins with Nick camera from Sam Houston next. This is the equine forum. Presented by twins buyers on HR N.

"I'm Jack Russell this is anything as possible when we're talking to Swami cotti giri who are genuinely forth 2021 became the CEO The new Frank stronach of mag international One of the first things you had to address was this ongoing COVID how did Magna handle that You were in charge of that when it first hit almost two years ago Please Yes my predecessor Don walker who is also a friend and a mentor in 2020 I was having the role of the president of magnate international at that point of time And the black swan of COVID hit us And true to our culture we got the senior leadership together and done was nice enough to ask me to lead that And as I was leading through this it was just a lot of credit goes to the senior management team We got together and said here is all the issues that we have What are the different work streams that we should look at whether it was shutting down plants in China building PPEs just not for our us but for the community around us how do we prepare for example the mass when we start reopening And when China came back online Europe was going down and what did we learn from China that we can apply so we can be more efficient more understanding of what the workforce was going through How do we keep them safe Most importantly but at the same time they communication to let them know how we are dealing with on everyday basis So they feel secure that they're being taken care of We as a company as an enterprise was working through it To me it was a great learning experience to see the spirit of magnet come together I couldn't have asked for anything It looks more with maybe when I look back at it But what I learned about people and the strength of the company I think there could have been no other way What are the long-term transformational issues brought on because of the COVID pandemic A few things I think it had its impact on the supply chain that we are seeing right now for sure As the industry came to a halt how we forecasted or how the semiconductor industry thought we were going to come back or how fast we were going to come back kind of led to the allocation issues and put us in a hole We are still catching up that is one thing Second part of it is just understanding the complexity of the supply chain and what should we do when something like a COVID disrupts us across the globe The third part of it is working from home or remote work versus being at work I think a shift in the mindset in many ways if you had asked me whether we could run it for a $1 billion company virtually to be very honest I would have said no But we know that's possible Is it efficient Maybe not But there are certain aspects of the work life that could be more efficiently done and done differently So there is a lot of societal there is a lot of industrial aspects I think that are emerging of what we have all gone through And I think some of the people miss the social interactions So I think there is a hybrid that's going to come out of this It remains to be seen how it looks and how efficient it will be So those are some of the things Jack that have come that come to my mind at a cursory look What are your priorities as we embark on 2022 I think we've laid out our strategy the long-term strategy I always like to put something on a piece of paper whether it's personal life or whether it's a company or everything you do Kind of helps you prioritize So what you do is it hitting one of the top priorities that you have From a magnet perspective people and the culture how do we keep and preserve what we have that is unique and that's the reason why we stand out From a product and a financial balance sheet perspective we are looking at how we take advantage of the transformative times So allocating accelerating capital on the mega trend alias whether it's electrification or adas or mobility as a service models Our DNA has been operational excellence So we continue to get to the next step You mentioned automation digitization industry four So that those are levers that will take us to the next step And how do we leverage what we have as a unique selling proposition we can design full vehicles We can provide a wide variety of large systems and we can contact vehicle manufacturer If there are new entrance new startups how can we help I think to sum it all up I think tagline says it all we say forward for all And the vision for us is advancing mobility for everyone and everything So that's the priority In 2018 the Trump administration renegotiated nafta They call it now USMCA how has that changed Magna if at all As you mentioned in your introduction we have a footprint globally and obviously we have a significant footprint in Mexico U.S. and Canada But I think over time it has taken a different name We were actively participating in the discussion even at that point of time both in the U.S. and on the Canadian side I think from an industry perspective pragmatism of what is needed to run the businesses prevailed It has maybe changed the terminology and the definitions a little bit We went through some time and tough discussions But I think overall the industry came together and beyond very pragmatic approach As our time winds down together this evening Swami what advice do you give to our young listeners Please Take the chance Don't be afraid I always use the.

"To join Magna international which was started 60 years ago by a bigger than life man Frank First tell us about Frank Phenomenal entrepreneur and a visionary I think is the short description right I mean is 80 plus years right And he is still as active and as sharp as he was I think before I had a book left on my table as I took this job on with his handwritten note of congratulations And his cell phone number if I ever wanted to reach him I think the culture and some of the foundational principles that he envisioned for the company are really very healthy and alive today and that's what keep us going This period of decentralization the spirit of entrepreneurial thinking every employee is a owner the really out of the box compensation system where they've management actually shares the profitability rather than just a fixed number I could go on forever And this I attribute a lot to how we started and if it did not have the long term vision the principles wouldn't be relevant right And the way he talked through and I think that's where it shines There are still very relevant today and actually more relevant today than ever before And that's what keeps us agile Very multi threaded man Frank stronach He had a passion a disease a love for the ponies horse racing do you share his passion for the ponies Ponies in the car may be I'm not as fortunate to know as much about ponies but I give a lot of credit and look a lot of us look forward or look up to him I should say in the passion back he has had for the company And if you talk to him today I think the passion still shows and reflects in how he talks about various things in life including Magna So that's something we try to emulate The late great J.P. McCarthy used to say never own anything that eats while you sleep All right Tell us about Magna international and it's 170,000 people Jack I think the segment that you have might not be enough if you let me talk through But I think you kind of talked about or mentioned in your interest statement It's truly a mobility technology company And we don't take that likely what we mean by that is the breadth that we have in addressing the transportation industry today We make power trains to adas systems to seats to structures that make the vehicles We actually make the entire vehicles for engineer and manufacture them for our OEM customers And with the transformative time square people are looking at moving goods and people from point a to B in the most efficient way in the safest way possible and the transformation that's happening because of the climate change debate and the demographic change in the buying habits so the people we have really in a transformative times and if you look at what mag does today and what it has as a foundation I mean we are I would still like to consider and I've said this often We are a startup We are just a small $40 billion company at $3 trillion industry So very excited to have my role and to be part of such a fantastic company Swami says he's a $40 billion startup He also has said and I quote I'm an engineer at heart Swami you are an engineer at heart but also you have a huge heart for people as well So all right 29 countries 342 manufacturing operations 58 of them and Michigan 24,000 people in Michigan You've talked about your company culture And from 2014 to 2020 you were the chief technology officer So let's talk about technology first What's your portfolio of offerings I think our portfolio of operations products I would say touch various aspects of the vehicle as I mentioned before we have a very broad spectrum We do powertrain systems whether it's all wheel drive four wheel drive or transmissions We do adas the complete Ada suite all the way from supplying components to the full system We do seats We do body structures and chassis structures all the way from a small component to entire systems like the closures the full body we look at a mechatronics we look at lighting we look at inside and outside mirrors And I think to top it all like I said the one different shader in the domain that we are in is for is our ability to engineer and manufacture pull vehicles Whether it's for the new entrance whether it's for our existing OEMs so it's a very broad unique portfolio that we have in terms of capabilities and we are able to address all the Important trends that the industry is talking about Whether it be electrification whether it be autonomy at different levels and new business models where people are looking at transportation as a service rather than ownership model We can play a role in all of that as we go through this And more importantly I think if you look at the breadth of the portfolio and how we are going through it we have also had the culture of looking at technology outside we call it open for business mindset So we work with startups We work with universities It's a very symbiotic relationship to say hey you bring the ideas You have the agility We bring the industry knowledge we can scale We can help each other So it's a very collaborative cooperative approach to address the changes that are happening in the industry So that's kind of in a nutshell of how we are looking at it Mix of culture our ability to be agile our ability to work with others and a very good foundation that we have All right you mentioned electrification talk to us about electrification Electrification is automotive industries answer to climate change or the industry doing our little bit to address the issue We are trying to make the planet sustainable for the future Air quality better And our answer to that is how do we address Taipei permissions and look at the upstream and downstream and the value chin to do our role as a corporate group citizen If you look at electrification what we're talking about today is how to.

"Any stallion in Canada would breed in locally has been able to do what he has done this particular year. He's had a great one winner group two winners. The other night, the juvenile horses were running by him. Those two new stake horses. What value for money? I mean, he stands at 7500 Canadian this year, we're going to be a little tighter in the type of bears that go into them due to the fact of his age. He's 19 turning 20. So we want to be very respectful towards it. So we're looking forward to a great year, but it's fantastic pedigree when you would look at that pedigree when we initially bought the horse. And I mean to pat myself on the back a little bit but some of the other horses that we bought, all the categories have to come enhanced over a period of time, which shows you that the feedback families have actually come true. And. There's big hope still here and we've got programs that are going into place. We also have two other horses that we're standing here. We have and actually one of my favorites physically. I mean, absolutely. Class act would be really look at the individual, you can see that our website WWW Dina started dot com. Of course called American guru by bridal Salvador kamar rouge. He strikes he is gorgeous. Can walk, I mean, he's had a new course record at Belmont park, which unfortunately was taken down last year, but he did set it a record that was held for a long time for a mile. And it's approving winning family. I mean, you look at this family itself. That was the three quarter horse to Indy 500 who is now the dam of Magna cores. So have to the dam of good forest, which is now a stakes place and pretty three horse in certain. In Europe. And of course, delta prints, for instance, it doesn't need any introduction, a family that we really, really loved, unfortunately, we ended up losing probably one of the up and coming young stars in that family would tell Chris when he got sick of them unfortunately we lost him. The other horse that we have up here as well is a horse owned by one of our dearest friends, Howie Walton, that's a horse called. Signature red. He's on track too. From literally his opportunity to get tough class. And he's also very good physical. So to be actually sitting here with 5 horses that. Could offer different bloodlines out, but the fact of the matter is to make it. And the not just making it restricted races are making an open race. I mean, point of entry had a great one winner this year. So names had a great one winner. Shaman ghost is he's struck along very, very well. He's just a matter of time before he actually hits up and gets the top cloud source. And of course, it's all to do with the bears and you know it's just a sudden horse. In Kentucky, we made a deal with John's cure and the hill and Dale Cassandra other two horses go stop by building needs any introduction in mid east. Like asking what color is blue, you know? You'd have to be half with that to figure that one out. And of course, much of a man is a pedigree that's getting better and better also. Here's having a little bit of a cool year, but that turns around very, very quickly. All his one or two good horses and you're off to the races again. So when you look at what we have between the two firms, the one in Kentucky, which we always have supported down there. And the fireman Canada, I think we give opportunities for people to either go south or go or come from north or give a good quality and great value. We have no overpriced any of our salience. I mean, they're all in a reasonable price range where the breeder, which is most important part of this business can actually make some money. The old trick of the trade that people have been doing over the years as soon as the stock starts to bake and it's pumped to be over the ceiling. And therefore, you know, a lot of the people that actually stuck by you can no longer afford to get in. And it strikes philosophy. Those are the type of people that we need in race. We need this marketplace to create the supply of horses. One of the things too by Ontario program here is actually ends up being a feeder for Gulfstream park and Laurel as well. So a lot of the worst of the winter time due to the weather up here, they moved down south or east and the whole operation gets reaped the rewards. Unfortunately, you have to have your old size at station to do this properly. We found out through the years that we've tried different spots, but I mean, at the end of the day, when you watch what's going on your own backyard, you know exactly what's going on. Yeah. It's been amazing ride for Frank stronach and for you, dermot and the team and Frank is always he's a horseman. He's always put horseman first, and he's always tried to give back to the sport whenever he can. And I do have a commercial break to get to before I wrap up this hour of the program..

"You know, it's like an 11 year old. Now that we've got him feeling good, we realize that literally he just doesn't know anything. Nobody's ever taken the time to really explain things to him and now we can put our leg on him and he moves away. He goes, and he stops and he turns. Before you can teach him anything. You can not train pain. That is for sure. And here's another proof of that, right? Yeah. And you know what? May have been pain forever, and that's why this horse wasn't interested learning anything. No, exactly, exactly. So just it's one of those moments that I totally feel like Amy Fleming. Heartland. I am Amy Fleming. I need to re watch all the episodes again. Would you like your life has almost that much amount of drama? So it's you know other people have said you should do you have your own reality show here, so, you know? Oh God. I don't love that. She's peeing in the stall again. Oh, you think you had trouble before? Imagine if you had your own reality show how many people would be turning you in. It's so true. So much drama. And then Zeus, he's had some issues, so he went and got some back injections at the equine hospital and so hopefully after 7 days he's gonna be able to get back to work and maybe I'll have my horse back. So he was on the CBD. Oh, I know, this is a calm down. Enjoy like standing there. Yeah. No, you can't just enjoy standing there. You have to be getting into something. But yeah, so hopefully he'll be back and I'll have all my horses back and I'm feeling positive going into this holiday season. Yay, good for you. Good for you. You know? Who else is going to feel positive? Who else is going to feel positive about the people that purchase two particular properties that have gone up for sale? And I go on to ask you, did we ever go to adina springs in Paris Kentucky when we were there? I have been there. Yeah. I thought so. But we went together to one in Paris, but that wasn't adena springs, right? Let me see what style it might have been adina springs actually. Remember, who's standing there? Yeah, I'm trying to remember where we went. We went to one of them. Well, Dina springs is coming up for sale. Now that was owned by Frank stronach, who purchased it in 2005 and built the state of the art facility on a 2300 acre property, was open to 2007, capable of future macho man is there. That's what I thought. Capable of and by the way, it's absolutely stunning. Capable of handling 1000 horses. So it's going up for sale. And I didn't know this. Jennifer knew this, but apparently there was a lawsuit between his daughter Belinda. It just sounds like a made up name, by the way. I'm just saying that sounds like a name. You only read books. That's a rich person named. The winda actually sued her father and there was this big lawsuit going on, litigation going on. And under the agreement apparently, Belinda continues her leadership role the group, which is the racetracks and the bedding companies, and her father and his wife, Alfred, I don't know how to say that name. And they get to keep the farm, but they're not going to be running it anymore. They're going to be selling it now. No word on what the price is, but can you imagine?.

To forty-seven she was forty seven to one ivy league. I mean i didn't. I didn't i wasn't fond of her in that spot but I think she needed to be forty. Seven to one either Then that spot. So i i guess i guess the i guess fluffy socks was a little bit of a modest disappointment there but It and i guess madonna too. Now that i know that. I'm i'm thinking about it. There were few people that were against. But don't in that spot actually and and the money the money really did gravitate them going global got going global down to Three to closing remarks ran very well in there for karla gains. actually things. You do some you know some things you don't notice a live and when you go back over the over the charts and the replace so there you go there's There's the top line of everything that went on this weekend. So we got that established and we can. We can fill in the blanks as we go And as we start to get some some visitors Going here Undoubtedly the the big stakes here will be the the focus over the next couple of hours. "Repeatable but it is not necessarily workable. It seems on a widespread basis in terms of resources. I how much the government is interested in this in this kind of of a prosecution. and investigations But in from you know inhibiting standpoint how do you. How do you measure this. And what's your what's your read on that well so Anytime you have a scandal like this it has a deterrent effect. Doesn't matter whether it's Cycling were the olympic games. Were the nfl major league baseball worse racing in particular. It does happen to turn effect Because it lets the participants know that somebody is watching you know. This is a lot of criticism of the regulators but a lot of these substances were not testable. It required inside information it required kind of boots on the ground. Work that jockey. Club and others instigated Because they were suspicious and they had information. What we don't know is how far the government is willing to take this case will for example in a row and service cleveland otherwise the extent to which they implicate others. You know there's some sense in the industry that the you know the domino's are going to fall and there are a lot of people out there who were not sleeping very well at night. I just don't know the extent to which the government may say we've done our job Let's move on or they stay in this and they go after other people Going forward You know you're dealing with a federal statute here but you're also going to be dealing with a new paradigm with highs and i think that this is a classic example of where we're gonna learn from this and heizo through United states anti doping agency which will be the enforcement agency under highs. They're going to be charged with the responsibility here. Now to institute in an investigative process were horse racing. That not only allows to help to uncover this kind of conduct and other illicit conduct but then prosecuted prosecuted federal court prosecuted as necessary including lifetime bans from racing and otherwise from a regulatory standpoint. So it setting up you get something that's going to set set up pretty well going forward going time we'll tell but Probably something that is long overdue and that under the current scheme we simply could not accomplish. That said many times on your show. The loss of the thoroughbred racing protective bureau fifteen twenty years ago. It was just a major setback for the industry in terms of Deterring inappropriate conduct a one other one other. Follow up to all of this. And it's come up repeatedly allen over the years and in fact at one point frank stronach even floated it I in fact it may have been at a roundtable that he that he floated. Or i might have been after some other notable incident Where the industry was coming under. Intense criticism and scrutiny. But the the commissary the the idea of of not having the opportunity for outside for Veterinarians to come onto the racetrack or anybody else come on to the racetrack with a that isn't on for instance The are mtc list. The you know the the products that are approved for a for. You says therapeutic medications. Why why why is this not ever gained the kind of traction that you would think would alleviate a lot of concerns or problems. I as i recall. I remember when frank Proposed it but the fact that it was it wasn't feasible just too hard to pull off. I'm not suggesting we couldn't do that going forward. And maybe that it's something when high gets established and it's got a pretty full plate right now i don't think that's it's first priority but Once it gets established and we get into a routine with this new regulatory scheme that might be something that the and that would happen through the Anti doping and medication control program through the standing committee. That may want to look into that. The industry scientific advisory committee to look into the feasibility of doing that It's it's a large undertaking. It's that simple. I appreciate this allen and while we're together let's Let's review or or catch up on any number of alad form related the projects and the match series. This year hasn't received As much notice because of an abbreviated schedule but bring us up to speed. Because there there's been you know we've we've had a few stops. The series started so This year series is different than our normal series because as a placeholder maryland operative run the series in cuneo down said. Well if you want to run a while we partner with you and we'll help you do it. So we're we're running the match series this year running the divisions were running the races were given bonuses but all the races are being run in maryland and next week in colonial will host for the racists and think we had one hundred thirty nine nominations for the four racist next week. Getting which is just just terrific. I know there are thrilled. And i can't say enough about the folks at colonial downs Kilburn and frank petrello with the Virginia gpa for offering to participate in and supporting the series the colonial wasn't original participant in the series and as you know when racing ceased to colonial and then series suspended There obviously they weren't ever not participating but they asked the comeback last year. We didn't run this. We had him in. Didn't run the series because of covert and then they step to the plate this year. So i'm delighted. The series is starting to take shape. we're just getting into the mid point in the series and it's you really can't ballpark anything. We got horses. That that are will qualify. We gotta run a minimum of of three the racist to qualify for the points in the bonuses. So we've got horses that have run in the first and second legs are coming up on the third leg of the series and any other different thing. Is you know. We've stretched a series out this year. Normally we'd be get to the real critical point in the series because we'd be done by the end of september of this year we're going into december so it's going to stretch out but it's good for the horses and i think that the series overall which has been very strong All the races being run in maryland. But the fields have been terrific in the handles in just fabulous We'll we'll take shape this fall so better time to to to really see where we're going with this but We're excited because we think when it comes back through the entire reach next.

"Maybe it's maybe it's a carson hollow Better or fan. But that's because the internet is full of asshole. It's i mean who who's who's voting against that maybe i don't know the the the parties may have because of course they that was carson hollow got a great. There's a great story. The party's told me when we were at the barn we were dale. Romans barn after Sharp humor got beat In the florida derby right with barbara worst came closer to the the only came close to beating barbro on the racetrack was was sharp humor and we were talking and i told them You know they're from ithaca and i told them mired their work and the other horses and and carson hollow. If i'm going to remember this right. They were going to sell carson hollow and she ran through a plate glass window before when she i think when she was a yearling she ran through a window and so she was all cut up like a mess. You know she. She looked like chuck wapner and they couldn't put her in the sale so they ended up keeping her. That's just one of those beautiful. What are those crazy. There's so many of these. The how the how the how the doctor dr. Jeremy ended up with summer bird because the mayor the mayor went in for surgery for a chip surgery and they operated on the wrong leg. And they said oh. For god's sakes forget it let's just breed and they were supposed to. I forget who they were going to breed to and they ended up They ended up going the they couldn't get they couldn't get to whoever they were supposed to get to something went wrong. And that's how they ended up being covered by Birds zone then got summer bird. Unbelievable that yeah. That's that's a. That's a racing of no question about a great story and save carson. Hollow was a very good horse in her own right. And i think the thing that that you a lot of people forget is that she was kind of one of the first like really good new york brett's in two thousand two. She wanted to bowery and that was when everybody realized she's really good after she wanted. Prior is when Frank stronach bought in because she was she was typical detro- for she was owned by. Sandy goldfarb in hemlock hills and yes she was a really really good new york bread and ended up. Winning did not win another great one but one floral park and wanted to staff the following. Your shit assure career. I don't really think but Yeah it's kinda funny how those things work out. It's uh racing is a small game. Well the she. She bathed in a good therapy. Good new york bread at the time but we all know who the best first greatest new york bread was saratoga do. Yes of course no question i. I first eclipse winter. I championship to the home team. Exactly absolutely what your core moran garner et Yeah yeah yeah adam and in reality mirror the saratoga derby where do we have to look past the euros or not valet feels like a worse that you you kind of wanna bet again if you can. But i just don't have a great amount of confidence in anybody of the horses that he'd be last time you know i don't know who's gonna necessarily bounce back and and beat him You know he's just kind of a kind of an odd euro moving horse. he peed really requires a ride. Most of the way. It kind of feels like doesn't winning. Cadillacs gonna win because cadillac is suited idea lead to this trip. I think the added ground is Is going to get him some good last time out he. Kinda sneakily ran a good race and the breeders cup juvenile turf last year. Feels like a horse. that's probably still got them upside. There's not gonna be a heck of a lot of speed in here. yes this time. I think it'll be a little bit more forwardly placed with as and I think is your will be somewhat closer as well so cellist also feels like a potential pace where so should be a decent enough early gallops but Yeah i mean it looks to me like one of those two will probably get it done. You know just. Don't there's not a domestic horse i could latch onto. I hope my old friend philosophy gets paste run out one of these days. But i think they might be going. A little past is distance limitations that a mile and three sixteenths mile and a quarter. I think he's a horse. That has a little bit more compact. Ron maybe ideally suited to a mile or a mile and a sixteenth. Or something like that. But the i'm just gonna keep it. Relatively simple i think in focus on those two euros fair enough. And that takes us to the whitney. Let's wrap it up with the whitney. I mean you know. How are they going to be go. I wish there was a way that i could see but to turns at a mile and eight zero togo with joel. Rosario and this enormous pace advantage i mean. He's just going to do what he did in the cornhuskers and i do what he did. In the pegasus. He's going to establish the lead. And if anybody wants to get anywhere near him they're gonna pay the price. I think maccesfield is terrific and i'm glad to see him In you know with this opportunity but you know count me among those that wants to see mcafee do it in impressive fashion outside churchill. That's just my concern. I have tremendous respect for brendan walls. And he's a trip. Of course. I think the job that he's done specifically with this horse deserves a lot of of admiration but I mean it's pretty clear. His best best to races by far of both churchill. And you know. I just want to see done somewhere else but i i just i cannot make a case for any of the other three i. I like overstate in the met mile. Got the money that day. I want no part of at a mile and an eighth in different situation and I applaud kenneth mcpeek for being aggressive with swiss skydiver. She is going to have a very hard time winning this race. And by my standards. I'd probably use an inland make. Small exact with him. Hoping that maxine just you know doesn't fire because the fire my standards always fires. He's he's a horse that you know c. Of late at least take taking out the breeders cup in the clark. He's come back. Now is a five zero two solid races and he was arguably best in miles. So there's something can be said there. And i think as far as the maltese go. I'm just gonna single mexico and go on with it i can. I can understand that And the take some. Take some shots elsewhere. The quick thought about the the eleventh and twelfth for those playing the pick fought eleven interesting race because you have risk taking their after. He was scratched from the the jim. Dandy it's an opportunity for him to be a little bit of a pricey figures to get some pace to run out. I don't know if he's good enough to beat older horses. He's not throwing faster rate and he has an awhile super facto looked interesting from the inside. He's the main speed. I think he's a horse that you you kind of have to use There's a couple of orlando note is in there and then the question becomes you. Are you willing to say the chester town. Now is new. Gelding having run a number of races that make him competitive. Have kind of a new lease on life. it's an awfully expensive gelding. But he's he's clearly needed it. So i'm gonna use him as well with a a little bit of a price and then in the nightcap which is a very very tricky race I'm a little intrigued by bay storm coming back off the off. It looks like there's going to be quite a bit pace in here. Jonathan thomas has a lot of experience with horses coming back fresh. He seems to start a lotta horses up hundred and eighty plus they layoffs. Actually doesn't pretty well. So yeah fundraise. It's just a big deep competitive field. You know i said to you Don't bother with the cross country. But then i then then i remembered a realize that i was going to get dave brower in here and so we had dave Did you happen to look at the tyrod at all. I didn't okay no problem. Well i look at the cross country was like seeing stuck.

Maybe i wanted to get pete Last week and we didn't have room. But i'll maybe tomorrow and i'm sure pete's got Extensive thoughts and another person. I thought of bob the start of it from pavement. I'm sure has got thoughts to i it. It really a those did poke around twitter but just put daft punk in The research and and you're going to see just this like devastated. I in fact. I saw somebody just a couple of days ago th. There's somebody wrote a thread on twitter. What do you when when music comes back when live music comes back. What are you looking forward to. And somebody said i. I'm looking forward to daft punk tori and i'm sure those. I'm sure that that person at the be talked off a roof Well it's tough We'll see i'm sure they come back with their own. No you know with the independent projects. It's yeah it. It's a little sad but we'll say we'll close the show later. You'll hear one more time and you'll know it instantly i mean you. There's there's things you've heard In in music literally the last quarter of a century twenty five years that you might not even realize the was grounded in in daft punk. So it's a tough one all all right shift gears got that it was going to spread that out over the morning but we had a busy first hour so Got that the those two stories. We got those done a couple of things before we look at some of the other results and before martin panza joins us chip mentioned His track super. And i did see yesterday that The track superintendent field day that typically is at indiana Comes back on june fourteenth and fifteenth. And of course last year. They canceled smith who If if tony's listening tonio on thursday tonio mentioned that roy smith is he. He's on the mount rushmore of track superintendents and He founded the superintendents field days so mid-june returns and get together and they all they exchange ideas and new things that things that Have innovations and mc peterson studies Everything when it comes to surfaces and maintain and they certainly have gotten more attention and have been more in the public Consciousness essentially in the last ten years or so a reminder too. It's already started this morning. But you'll be able to watch it later at t.f. Inc dot org the program. We talked about with kim we last week. The second chances juvenile program and their job doing the thirty minute streaming event right now. And then you'll be able to watch it anytime but has really gotten a really then hailed widely Extending the you know the training and the grooming concept for adults to juvenile side of correction program and Juvenile residential commitment program operated by youth opportunity investments in ocala. So and has kim explained. It's going to be it's going to be it's not going to get the same kind of publicity that the the adult program gets because these are these are adolescents teens and young adults that are incarcerated. so we won't necessarily see a lot of the the skills and and and you know the the execution of the program but It it'll be doing its job for sure. save the International for our visit with With deck on thursday like the guy did touch on the little bit of the highlights with the the two japanese races in particular that leprosy said and and cafe. I'm anxious to talk to dick and actually acid- tomorrow we'll talk about the hyacinth. Winter with that. We're definitely going to look at that pedigree With limited with limited schedule from last week i did notice Which was kind of fun. And i said on sunday morning as i was looking at that at that race and watching the performance And if you haven't seen the replay is i would watch it On the female side of the family deal romans involved and the i think the second dam Even maybe even the first. I should pull that. I've got saved. was a dale trainy. And i said dale a note. I said did you see that. The that this winner Of the of the hyacinth. The you train and then the second dam was a Kind of a modest Was a modest winner herself. I think it made. Maybe thirty thousand. For edina for frank stronach and i asked eric camelback about her. The first dam. The first dam was japanese runner by empire maker. The second dam was a here. It is naughty mambo. They'll actually dale trae. That's it naughty. Mambo dale train. Four stronach was bred by. twin creeks. Zane king mambo mayor out of a relaunch mair naughty mambo. Four time winner and I guess i guess she fell short of being stakes placed. Yes she just she is. She had some third some fourths and fifths. She was kind of kind of an allowance mayor and just found the the stakes company. Just a little Tough the second dam was one that i haven't had a chance though I wanted to reach out the john. Henning trained and notions of relaunch bear that.

"At dislocations and they don't have to worry about that. I mean the people that run british racetrax much more astute about betting And of course the the the ot bees or the book makers were dude. And that's why they pay. But makers pay the the british racing business far less than probably any other place in the world. But that's because the guys that understand the betting control business and that's sort of what's happened with the robotics and that's just something we also what happened with the eighty Do you bring in an international element. I makes me think We won't do it today. We'll do it in a subsequent conversation but and i it makes me think of of the tab system in in australia and the new zealand And of course they've very successfully of have introduced. You mentioned fixed odds Which is is is got the toehold and his just you know bet makers is is trying to establish a beachhead on that front and it could be a very positive innovation and we've talked about brilliant example because they did this not that long ago and they were purely a mutual Continent country With really good batting product and some great racing And i think fixed odds may have gone ahead of wagering terms of handle adds up perfect example. And it's a good thing that you brought up well and we we also as part of the tab conversation and we certainly don't have time for today As i've said we're going to have charlie charlie hayward is with us if recognize the voice and charlies piece at the thoroughbred commentary dot com is multi multi layered and and in some cases a tough tough read because it it shines a light on some some really unpleasant truths and some frankly unsavory Structuring that that is firmly established and going unaddressed and to some degree running wild and you know hurting. The potential for long term success not even not even growth. Have you forget growth. A long term long term sustainability without growth. The growth is a whole separate topic. but i i know ch charlie next week when when we we do a follow up and then we break out you know. Some some real specifics. I'm absolutely going to discuss from ten years ago. You mentioned charles. And you know the very close to the end zone Citizens plan that you know. The toba had had invited at the time and could have easily resulted in a industrywide. W that would have solved a lot of the issues that we're dealing with now and it might be well worth revisiting. What went on there because all of these topics you know. I know people think that the industry just is ignoring everything and everybody you know is out for their own purposes but there has been there has been any number of attempts over the years to address these topics and there's been some very viable alternatives and suggestions made and the certainly what's the teach tried to do You know working. With churchill and working with frank stronach specifically Came very close. I mean the there. There is the possibility to solve these issues. Belinda Alleges Frank’s `Fanciful Schemes’ Eroded Stronach Family Empire

"As the story goes frank stronach arrived in Canada from his native Austria in Nineteen fifty four with two hundred hundred dollars in his pocket and the hope of opening a tool and die shop that shop eventually became the auto parts company MAGNA international which made Strana on a billionaire frank then got involved with thoroughbred racing owning both racehorses and eventually race tracks today the Strana group the spinoff off company for many of the Families Racetrack Operations Owns Gulfstream Park in Florida both tracks in Maryland Loral and Pimlico home of the preakness and of course source the great race place Santa Anita among others over the years. Some of Frank stronach's race track plans heavy listed quizzical looks with one example being the thirty million dollar price tag for the Pegasus statue outside of Gulfstream his daughter Belinda though has done more than look quizzically. Belinda is now the chairman and President of the stronach group and she is suing her father for over five hundred million dollars. She claims claimed that francs pet projects as she calls them have lost the company huge sums of money frank has counter-sued saying that Belinda and a former business partner appropriated family funds for their personal benefit good grief. What will this family feud mean for the Strana Group Group and by extension for the entire thoroughbred industry here in the United States since T S G controls so many influential tracks to people who were quite familiar with the business dealings of the strategic group are writers Joe Connor and Barbara Sector of the financial post a Canadian based publication and we welcome Miss Scheckter and Mr O'connor here to win the gate. Let's start with Mr O'connor. Each side accuses the other of financial malfeasance. What facts do we know through all of this bluster. Well what we do know is what the suit alleges and what I'm frank is accusing blend end of is misappropriating funds and essentially locking him out of the company that his money built and what Glenda is same is. That's not the case and in her countersuit. She's saying well you know. The Truth is here is my dad and I'm quoting is is she's called them idiosyncratic idiosyncratic and often unprofitable side ventures meaning that she believes that her father has a frittered away money on then any projects such as an organic beef farm in California and on a fancy bike electric bike and on other things and that has put the company in jeopardy and that in order to see rescue the company's fortunes. She has to keep her father at arm's length from it. It's a giant. He said see she said as long as that's floating out there and working its way through the court system. It's going to mean some uncertainty. I think the the thing that is sure is that there's going to be continued uncertainty until this gets resolved so so. Michelle after financial controversy has followed the strongbox for quite a while even going back to two thousand ten when they were paid basically to leave magna and it seemed like a little unusual to say the least I mean what do things like this say about the nature of their business dealings things in their character especially as relates to their employees. Well I mean it was very unusual and it was quite controversial in Canada just because because of the the quantum the amount of money that they paid to collapse this dual share structure which gave the Straw nics way more votes per share than other shareholders. I mean it was a common structure in Canada and it's even sort of picking up steam right now in the US and a little bit back in Canada because it allows sort of families as an entrepreneurs to retain control but in the case of Magna and at the time it was an unpopular structure and companies were being pressured to drop it it and stronach agreed to collapse it and leave the company but he demanded what summit called a king's ransom to do so and he was not willing to bend on that it ended up going for Securities Commission and also through the courts with some of the large institutional shareholders like pensions demanding that you know that he takes less money that it was far too much money but he was unyielding and he walked away with exactly what he negotiated with the company who cares what at the institutional shareholders who've been there for varying amounts of time want so it was the same when he was running the company he did things his way he took you know large paychecks and defended them telling people that maybe he even deserved more than he was taking so certainly as strong willed and you know willing to keep pushing his way and getting it so that certainly is the type of personality. We're talking about here. It's a it's not a shrinking violet on either of their counts. What about the potential cultural difference at work here since you have the self made father and daughter who was born into wealth. I think that's a huge the dividing line you see frank who was a child in wartime. Austria who comes to Canada panelists our near to it and has the Moxie to build a company that goes through the roof in terms of its value he built this thing with his hands and I met with them for lunch going going back into the spring and what he said at the time and he wasn't GonNa go deep into the weeds of the actual legal case he wasn't gonNA roll mud necessarily Elliot his daughter but what he did say quite clearly and what was evident in our conversation was that he truly believed that he'd built this. This was whose baby as it were and that his children his daughter and son and their children should be entitled to some of that well but in the form of of a and inheritance in the form of what I think the figure he quoted to me was like I will give my children one hundred million dollars each and they can go on build their own legacy. I can see whereas frank sees. The He sees the race tracks. TST owns he sees the empire as I've been been built by his his money and he believes that he should have the keys to the empire and be able to drive you in whatever direction he
