"You know the most talked about storyline during the off season into camping in the week. One was the offensive line. How are they going to look? Some new pieces added or some pieces? Moved at least and bringing in Riley Reef in the off season. Um, give me an a set big picture, and then we'll go. It's kind of a little bit micro. Give me a big picture sense of how you felt about the offensive line. I thought the offensive line performed adequately, You know, I think there's room for improvement, but again in the opener, and when you're going against a guy as creative and as knowledgeable as Mike Zimmer And who can throw wrinkles out there that are pretty dramatic, not just with his with his double a gap, but other things like Brian Callahan was talking about. He put a guy in the nose and that's not a big Mike Zimmer thing. Brian Kelly handed never prepared for Mike Zimmer defense. That was an odd look. They call that odd if they have a nose tackle, even if the center is uncovered in the defensive tackles are on the guards, so a different look. And honestly, when you think about it, it makes sense because Mike Zimmer's thinking Trey Hopkins. Uh, reconstruction. I've got piers Behemoth beast. I think I'm going to test Trey Hopkins by putting him on the nose and it's different Look, and we can do some scheming around it. So it's difficult. You have to go to the grease board at the sideline. You come out and trade hawkers like Coach coach Pollock I What are we going to do? All of our rules? You know, we do. We have rules. What do we What do we do with this big beast on my nose? And what are we thinking? Here? Get the grease poured out. Okay, let's make the adjustments. And that was one of my big keys to the game. You know, One of the keys was handled the gap. Who's going to run the football more effectively. Bengals did a decent job double a gap as well as a lot of teams do. They ran the ball better than the Minnesota Vikings did. And then the all important third was adjustments during the game coaching adjustments immediately on the sideline, not waiting till halftime but immediately on a series by series basis. Who's going to be able to make the quickest and best adjustments and the Bengals hung right in there, as opposed to, you Know, boy, all the experience Mike Zimmer and everything else. They hung in there pretty darn well. And I think, uh, you know, Lou in a room Oh, as as a more experienced defensive coordinator going against Clint Kubiak, who is the first time you just call and plays as an offensive coordinator? I think Luann Romo made some adjustments and and made things tougher. Clint Kubiak. Although you know again, not everything is going to be perfect. You go zero coverage on that fourth and four and they hit you right in the butt with a 24 yard touchdown pass Those things happen. Those guys get paid to their pros. And they Kirk Cousins has seen things and feeling the same things and they made a great adjustment. And, uh, in 1 69 snaps for each of these starters, each of the starting offensive linemen took all the snaps. Rightly Reef. I haven't had a chance to ask you much about Riley Reef, but to me Just my sense is he's a lunch pail kind of guy doesn't mean a few words, but my sense is, he's a guy that you love big time. Big time. Mike Zimmer loves him, Mike Zimmer said. You know, he doesn't say anything. But when he says something, everybody listens, You know, it's kind of Yeah, Yeah, no question, and Mike Zimmer said one of my all time favorites, You know, he's got a 280 acre ranch here in northern Kentucky Zim doesn't he gave Riley Reef The code to his gate the code to his house the code to his ranch coat everywhere, So he he just trust this guy. He made him a captain up there at Minnesota and you know he didn't. He didn't want him to go. It was just a salary cap scenario, and the Bangles stepped up in the Minnesota Vikings were in cap trouble, and Riley Reef was a victim of that so It wasn't that Mike Zimmer said. You've got to move on. You can't play anymore. And during that game after the Bangle scored their second, their third touchdown to go up 21 to 7 Riley Reef, you know, going against his former team, and I'm sure he had a lot to say that the other offensive lineman there's nothing like I went against the student practice. I'm telling you, this is his best move. This is a little bit of his weakness. Here's what you have to think about those kind of things on top of, you know other other tendencies that you know, coaches might have and all that all that Intel all that information. They picked up a quarterback on the practice squad that has spent the entire training camp at the Minnesota Vikings. You know, and Riley Reef and you know they had they had some Minnesota Viking Intel Trade wings. You know, I had some Minnesota Viking intel, so it's you know, And then, of course, Minnesota felt they had a lot of Intel. Mike Zimmer knows a lot about the Bengals organization, Paul Guenther, but they hadn't been around for a while. These guys were more recently with the Minnesota Vikings. The Vikings game was important to Riley Reef, because no matter what you can be quiet, you can still be prideful. And this dude is prideful in his mind, they said Move on. And he wanted to stick it to him. Believe me, he wanted a pound salt up their rear end. So when when they went up 21 7. After the extra point, he's sprinted off the field from the sideline. He ran a 10 flat 100. I mean, that was his former celebration. He beat all the skill guys. He made everybody off the field runs to the spot on the bench, sits down his bench, takes his helmet off of the big smile on his face. Didn't say anything. I mean, here's the tree crappy if he has a mouthful of it, but that right there told me wryly Reef is rolling man that adrenaline's pumping and it was. It was good to see I and and all all the offensive lineman of responded to him. Joe Mixon has Joe Burrow has He has had an impact on this football team. Fred Johnson was inactive. Isaiah Prince was active. What did you make of that decision? Roster wise. I think that Frank Pollock is saying to Fred Johnson, you got to take it. More sailors seriously, Fred. You're a big, strong guy. Long arms, you know, range and all that. But Prince might have been the most improved offensive lineman from last year this year. Based on what Frank Pollocks been teaching him, he responded to the techniques. Uh very well. He's more athletic than Fred Johnson. Not as thick and strong but more athletic. And I think that Frank Pollock at this point in time trust Prince more than each trust Fred Johnson. And it's that simple. Now it's not to say that Fred Johnson is going to be the active every week. But for week one, Prince one that spot one that eighth offensive lineman is such the third tackle, eighth offensive lineman Got about a minute. Just a final quick thought on Jackson, Carmen and the track he's on and where his arrow, is it. Is it pointing up right now? In your mind, you know? Yeah. I mean, the Bengals activated him. And, uh and then they sat somebody that they're very high on. I mean, you know, uh, just cramped on his name number 70 for the Cincinnati Bengals. I will tell you, you know, I think I'll tell you here in a second. Yeah, they deactivated DeAndre Smith, who had a great camp from East Carolina. They were very high on him. He's got position. Versatility..

"So get yours today. Get out the outside zone. Who's going to Execute the wide zone the outside zone the stretch play whatever you want to call it better. Both teams are going to try to establish a ban. You know you can't let Dalvin cook cook. That's the biggest thing. He's hard to tackle. One on one, you can have to leverage him and gang tackle him. You named Frank Pollock run game coordinator. Let him run The football with Joe Mixon and Gary Kubiak is the big common thread here. His son Clint is going to try to establish the outside zone just like Gary Kubiak did. When he was coordinated with the Vikings. He retired his son, Quint takes over, so it's going to be a big factor. Who gets that outside run game going who can play action pass off the bat bootleg off that all the things that you can do after you get that running game established is going to be able to run the football best. And then the double eight gap. You know, we talked about it a lot. Mike Zimmer with the architect of it. Two guys up in the age gap between the centre and guard. Could be linebackers could be safety. Could be defensive lineman could be a myriad of people, and it's very interesting the way they employ it. You can't guess right? They wait for the center to make a call in turn either either way, and then they're going to bring people off the edge the opposite way and people in that age gap so You know what it is, is the quarterback in center have to be on the same page. The quarterback has to know who the offensive line running backs going to leave unblocked he has to. He has to know who the free runner is and get the ball out of his hand quickly, and fortunately for the Bengals, they have a center. And a quarterback with not only high IQ's high football IQ used to recognize, be able to communicate and diagnosed. That gap is going to be big. The best way to defeat the they don't do it every down. Then he may.

"Ballpark buns on the Bengals radio network. Plain box filler with you, and it's the Cincinnati Bengals opening game against the Minnesota Vikings. End up Joe Burrow is looking forward to a big game today, and I tell you what Jonah Williams is going to help make that happen. He's coming into his third season and been entrusted. With the left side of that offensive line are Dan who had caught up with him and this week's walls. Business Solution Player interview. Jonah You are noticeably bigger this year based on training camp and 20 snaps and preseason games. Can you tell if bigger is better? And if so, why? I think so. I feel I feel good. It's hard to tell if that's due to technique or if that's you know the weight and strength helping out, but I think it's definitely been a good thing to put on a little bit of weight. It's not a huge sample size, but you were involved in 11 pass blocking snaps in the preseason games and did not allow any pressures, at least according to pro football focus. You're blocking against chase young on several of those plays. How do you feel? You did. I think I You know, I'm happy with how I played. But as a person who wants to get better, You know, that's what that's what we practiced for. And that's what the seasons for, Um, you know, so I think I did well, but I'm looking to get a little bit better. It's your third season. But really, it's your second because you were injured in year one. How much different do you feel going into this year than you did a year ago? I feel a lot different. I feel a lot better. Um, You know the game moves a little bit slower, as they say. I think it just takes a lot of game reps to start to get used to it. Um, you know, playing in the NFL is a big challenge, So the more experience you have and more comfortable year a going out there. Uh, you know, the more successful likely going to have we're chatting with Jonah Williams. So in Frank Pollock was brought back as the offensive line coach in early January. Did you guys talk over the phone? Did you meet? How did you begin forming relationship? Yeah, I was back here forbidden the off season. You know, just getting my knee signed off on and checked out everything like that from from the end of the season. You know, so I was able to see coach and talking, get a feel for how he operates. And you know what is you know what his attitude is like, and you know, really appreciate him as a coach and have enjoyed, you know all the time we spent together so far. In addition to having a new position coach, you've got a 10 year vet on the opposite side of the offensive line and Riley Reef. Is that almost like having another coach. Hey, it is, you know Riley's Riley's played a lot of football and he knows what he's talking about. So it's good to hear that, you know you have the coach perspective and, you know, obviously Coach Pollock also played in the NFL for for a while, So you have that inside and then you have Rallies played so long and you know, I'm playing next to Q and Quentin and we have trade too, so play next to a lot of guys and eggs will play a lot of football, So I think we're definitely an experience, you know, this year. Riley is roughly the same size as you are. He's not one of these 67 £340 kind of guys does that make his information even more helpful? I think so. For sure. Um, you know, I think there's similarities in our games and You know, obviously, like you said, in the in terms of just pure size, and that everything we're pretty close, So I think that it adds an element. You know, we kind of the same toolbox so He says something works for him. Then it's likely to work for me. I'm interested in your intel on a guy on the opposite side of the ball. Trey Hendrickson, who came in as a free agent 13.5 sacks last year, with the Saints to tie for second best in the NFL. You've had to block him a lot in training camp. What stands out You know, he's a He's a great player, and I think the thing that stands out most is his speed is upfield. Speed is ability to get upfield and put pressure on the tackle to, you know, give depth so you can protect And also his motor. You know, he's a guy who's going to keep on trying move, swiping hands, and even if you beat him on the first thing, he's going to keep on trying. And you know, I don't know any snaps. He's played, but it felt like every snap. I was watching the preseason was getting pressure. So Um, you know, it's been good battling with him all camp and I think we've made each other better. The last time we saw you last year on the field, it did not look good. I think most of us assumed that you had a torn A C l or something of that magnitude. When you went down in the Miami game, two games after Joe Burrows injury did you fear the worse at that time? I did, Uh, you know, I felt the same thing that you guys saw. I felt somebody flying into my knee from the side. You know, felt some issues in my knees, So I was pretty pretty happy to hear that. You know, when the MRI results came back that it wasn't as serious as I thought, so it allowed me to Go in the off season rehab it and then for the vast majority of the offseason. I've been 100% training at full speed, and I think that that's been beneficial to mine. Uh, growth this year, so you open against the Vikings. You're going to be matched up against one of the NFL's premier pass rushers in Daniel Hunter he missed last year the neck injury, But before that, back to back seasons of 14.5 sacks. You study these guys? What stands out about him? I think he's really balanced Russia. That's the first thing I noticed, is he, You know, he has a little bit of everything, and he's good. Everything he does is not just the speed guys, not just the power guy. It's not just the technique. I kind of You know, combines all of that, and he's a versatile player. Um, you know, that's that's the NFL every single week pretty much for playing a premier pass rusher. And so that that's the challenge for this week is to is to handle him and, you know I'm I feel good about this online room and I feel good going into practice that we're.

"Reality check from nine to midnight. All right, let's get into some things about this team. We've sifted through the the preseason camp an hour to the moment of truth beginning on Sunday. Let's talk about some of the things that we are optimistic, slash excited about what this team I'll start with the obvious one. Um, you and I know what it was like. Week to week. Once Joe Burrow went down in that image of him laying on the turf in Washington and the look on his face and the realization suddenly That he was done, and it was going to be a a challenge in rehab, and it wasn't just the A. C L is a couple of different alphabet things in the knee. We went through weeks doing this show where I know we walked in, and we sat down and said, What is there to say about this team with Ryan Finley and Brandon Allen? There was there was just a sense of hopelessness like The the The man was gone, and there just wasn't enough behind that to create any storylines with this team. Now the big storyline. He is Joe's return he sorted through the early camp. I think more than unless the head games of traffic around the knee. I can't wait to see the maestro of this offense. Um, survey the weapons he has and drop back to pass right? And look. I mean, I will save my my full praise for him when I see him in the game, and he's moving on in the knee is not an issue. Mentally, you don't see it, but To your point these nine months removed from surgery, and I can tell you I've seen guys a guy played with the Titans Joe Nedney. He injured his knee in a game comes back does all the rehab and in training camp Person again, right? So there was no major setbacks, right? I think that's a very, very good thing for Joe Burrow. We'll see how things go from there. But right now it appears I would like to see him get a little more action in the preseason, But I guess the main good news is No setbacks and he's ready to start this season. We saw a stretch with this team with Joe before the injury where they scored 31 against the Titans, 34 against Cleveland, 27 against Indy. And I just looked up Rock last year. The highest scoring team in the league was Green Bay at almost 32 points a game. I'm not saying this offense is going to score 32 a game or be the Bills or the Buccaneers or the Kansas City Chiefs. But if you tell me at the top 10 is right at 27 points a game 26 27 points a game. I don't think it's a stretch say this offense can push top 10 status for points per game. If everything is clicking, as we think in the weapons are there that that that we know it's just a matter of of, you know, and I'll get to this and the things I'm a little less optimistic about, but obviously comes down that offensive line and Joe Burrow mentally if he's there, but But the pieces are on this team, right. It's not like it's you look around that roster. You don't see any weapons, you know they're They're just everything has to come together. I can't wait to see Joe Mixon. From this standpoint one he dealt with the toe. The foot thing that bugged him all of last season early, wiped out the season. But by all accounts, he's healthy. He's in great shape. I've been very intrigued by what Brian Callahan, the offensive coordinators, said Going back months ago when he talked about Wanting Joe to be on the field all the time to be a guy in on third down, which means he's going to catch some passes, which means he's gonna have to pick up some bullets is which is a little bit concerning. But Joe seems to be of the mindset and I saw the quote earlier today. I guess, he told the beat writers I wanna paraphrasing Put this team on my shoulders and carry a day. We know the energy he can bring to this team. There's nothing better than when Joe breaks off run early in the game, stands up pounds the chest and turns to the crowd and that that is like infused in this offense when he goes back to the huddle, absolutely, and for him, it's to stay healthy. But if you've got a quarterback used You know? Look, I don't expect to see some, you know, 400 yard amazing performance by Joe Burrow. It's his first time back. But if this team can lean on Joe Mixon while he's still getting his feet wet and getting back into the flow and gaining confidence that that's the formula for this team, and for this often let's remember when we last saw Joe, mixing with Frank Pollock, their offensive coordinator who has come back Joe was leading the league in rushing that year. I'm not saying he has to do that again this year. It would be nice, but it is such an I mean you can speak to. This is a former linebacker. Would you have a threat like Joe Mixon? What he can do on the ground and dabble a little bit and pass catching and you pair it with the trio of weapons with Joe Burrow. The attention the how it splits attentions for a defense and what you have to do as a defense to to keep that in mind deal with that is a big ask for a defense. Well, think about how many times Lance we talk about who is the guy that keeps the defensive coordinator up at night? Right? Well, you look at this roster from weapons standpoint, there's you know, three or four guys, maybe so. In a game where he can only designate a certain amount of resources to a certain amount of people. Okay, you're going to double this guy will let me use more opportunities for this guy that the worst thing you want to have. An offense is Some unbelievable talent, But he'd be the only one on that roster because defenses are good. These players are good. These D coordinators are really good. They can find a way to take away one guy, maybe even 1.5 2 guys, but they can't do that, with with three guys or four guys. The way they spend less time is laid out. I don't want to shortchange the defense. I think it's going to be much improved from a year ago, and it has to be There's a lot of new fresh faces. I think this speaks specifically to linebacker Logan Wilson seems to be somebody and I want your thoughts on the significance of that second year jump and what you learn in year one that you don't have to worry about thinking about in year two, because I think he's somebody and it's that cliche a nose for the football, But Logan Wilson is always around the football. I can't wait to see what his year two is going to be. I mean, first year there's so much learning and think about Logan Wilson had to do it without a training camp without all the off season stuff. So now he's got a full year ends had an off season. I mean, there is the ability for a ton of growth right there for a guy like him, and that is one. The biggest jump needs to take place because that's usually when the game starts to slow down and you're out there react instead of thinking, and now he can exude his leadership and all that kind of thing. I'm very excited for Logan Wilson. And while we're on the defensive side of things, I'm curious, and we've seen this Bengal secondary through the years and some guys to frustrate William Jackson, the third splashed early in his career, and then not so much there have been Beat up in that secondary line..

"That. First of all, he got to move on from Bob Bratkowski as his offensive coordinator. And if Mormon, Lewis wore out his welcome, Bratkowski sure did then, too. Committed to not bringing Carson Palmer back. They were just going to let him sit and snu. Goes out drafts. Dalton drafts green. All of a sudden you got five playoff teams did. Marvin won a playoff game here? No, we know that. But we also know He had some pretty good teams and pretty good run along the way. So 2015 rolls around. You know, the Bengals are still cooking. They make the playoffs, but they make the decision to move on from Andrew Whitworth and Kevin Zeitler, and they think that said Drago Boy, he Who was that cat's name that they drafted in the second round. Fisher, right? They thought those two guys were going to be life after Zettler and and, uh and Whitworth and those two guys couldn't block the door. I'm shocked that old boy he is still in the league. 2017. They took John Ross John Ross. Think about that. John Ross might be the biggest whith in draft history, and they've had some whiffs. Dude was so bad that his last year here they were putting him at cornerback in practice to see if they could salvage him. There couldn't run routes couldn't remember routes didn't fight for contested balls. Now, listen. This dude may go to New York with the Giants and light it up. Don't think so. Why did up Billy Price, another guy? Happen to think Billy Price is going to be a good player this year for a number of reasons. It's his contract year. And he's reunited with the guy that was here when he was drafted. Frank Pollock. Frank Pollock is the offensive line coach. I think he's the X factor on this team. Think this offensive light is going to be better because they've added wryly Reef and Jackson Carmen. I think it's going to be better because I think Jonah Williams is going to be a much better player under Pollock. Trey Hopkins. Hopefully, sounds like he's going to be okay with his knee will see Camp opens here in about three weeks. But I think Pollock is the guy that makes that different. Now in in Zach Taylor's case, he had a chance to hang on to Frank Pollock and decided not to. We brought in Jim Turner. And that was that did not work out well. But I look at what I look at what he's dead. So far in in going In those two seasons 6 25 and one I look at that. And I said, Okay, the first year it was Marvin Lewis Group, right. He had a lot of guys that were on the back nine. And slowly and surely he weeded those players out Now the team didn't play well. We got to last year. We get to last year they draft Joe Burrow. Everybody's excited about Joe Burrow Cus the year before sucked, and we all knew that Andy Dalton wasn't going to be the answer. Quite frankly, Andy Dalton should have not been the answer. For 2017 on I should have taken Patrick Mahomes, but that's all different story. Well, No, I know that Dalton was their starting quarterback in 2017. But where was he in 2019 there there 56 games in the season. He's benched. They're going with Ryan Finley. But they draft and it all. And so all of a sudden that offense takes on a different dimension, and the team takes on a different feel. Now they they lost to the Chargers in the opener, Miss Field goal by Randy Bullock. They play the Browns close. They play Brown's within five. They have that overtime game with Philadelphia, which was a disaster, but it's at Philly. Had a chance to win that. They beat Jacksonville they had no shot at Baltimore. They put 21 up on Indianapolis and then they run out of gas, and they wound up losing 31 27. Cleveland comes here. They lose by three the go back to Paul Brown Stadium and beat the Titans. Okay, Steelers beat them. They get two week 11. Week 11. And I remember this because everybody at this radio station that does a sports show was saying the same thing. Before the Washington game. Hey, Washington. Washington was no good. The Giants were pathetic. The Dolphins were struggling. It was at Miami. There was going to be a tough game, but it was the Dolphins. Then the Cowboys. The Cowboys were horrible. So you're looking at going into that Washington game. You got four games four games. And you're thinking of yourself with Joe Burrow. There's a really good chance they could win three of those four, maybe all four. But we know what happened to burrow in Washington. So You go back and you look at a team. That finished last year 4 11 and one You take three losses away. Now, all of a sudden, you got eight losses. You put three losses to the good Now all of a sudden, you're 781. Does this conversation even happen? If Joe Burrow is under center, answering the bell. From the Washington game forward. I don't I don't I don't think it even happens, but what happens with a lot Of national writers. Is that they look at a situation and they apply universal logic to it. And universal logic. When it comes to the 10 year of a head coach for the Cincinnati Bengals does not apply or Marvin Lewis would have been gone in 2008. He would have been gone in 2017. But what if the Bengals are nothing? When they come to their head coaches. They are patient. And so I can't see. Unless this team absolutely tanks this year, and I don't see that happening. I think Pittsburgh I think is the pits. I think that team they got good defense. I think that team is going to struggle mightily to score points. You've got a quarterback pushing 40 you have you think the offensive line here was bad last year? They have no offensive line. None that three starters go either to free agency or retirement. They're they're cooked. I think on offense. Yeah, they drafted a running back in in the first who's going to block for him? I don't think the Bengals are going to tank. I actually think the Bengals are going to be more than competitive. I think the Browns and the Ravens when it's all said, and done are going to be slugging it out for The A F C North. But I don't think you're going to see another two win season here. 31 season so exact Taylor Can take what he's gotten. And flip it around. And instead of winning just four games, maybe the guy win 78. He's coming back. Because he has Joe Burrow. He has a much better offensive line coach. His defense on the offensive on the defensive line, especially has been the entire defense has been rebuilt. But look what they've done on the defensive line. FC North's a tough division. And it's not going to be eagle. Easy to eek out wins. This is the time of the year when you hear a lot of people, particularly national people Talk about something hot seats this scene. Marvin Lewis is on the hot seat so much when he was here. So many times from so many writers swear the guy had to get skin grafts on his rear end..
