"Scams in life and online but today's ask an expert is a little unusual because our guest is not just an expert in avoiding scams he's also famously experten doing them you're most likely to recognize him as the main character played by Leonardo di Caprio and the inspiration for the movie catch me if you can based on his book of the same name as a teenager Frank alpha male was pursued for years by the FBI for forging checks and assuming identities he started working for the government after being caught and sentenced to just under five years in prison since then he's gone from being wanted by the FBI as a criminal to being wanted as a consultant he's worked as a consultant for the FBI for decades and is fraud prevention programs have been used by thousands of financial institutions his new book is scare me if you can simple strategies to out smart today's ripoff artists which offers advice on everything from identity and medical records theft to modern threats like protecting your phone from being hacked and what your password is more of an inconvenience than a form of security he joins us now to share his insights Frank welcome to all of it thank you for having me and listeners if you want to ask Frank about ways to protect your identity is secure finances keep your accounts online secure give us a call two one two four three three W. NYC two one two four three three nine six nine two if you're afraid you might be vulnerable to fraud or if you had experience being the victim of fraud and you want to share and wonder what you could have done that maybe would have stopped it give us a call two two one two four three three nine six nine two two one two four three three W. NYC we are talking scams okay Frank I'm gonna ask you the elephant in the room question if you're going to give us advice and scans but you're someone who is scanned people for a really a long time why should we listen to you well I think be the best expert is a person is actually done that at mon many people know me from the movie I have spent the last forty three years teaching at the FBI academy of I've talked to generations of FBI agents I've written this is my fifth book my books are mainly been about commercial crimes crimes against financial institutions corporations the center this is the first time I've written a book about consumer fraud I've been an ambassador to a a RP for five years of help them deal with crimes against their elderly center thirty eight million members and they commissioned me to write the book for them so it's basically their book all the royalties in advance goes to them but it was an interesting five years researching for the book and I tried to look at every conceivable scam there was including bit coin scams and kryptos games investments camp and try to explain to people these are the scams the the how they work and here's a red flags that you catch most of those games with and it's basically I am a true believer that education is the most powerful tool to fighting crime so whether I'm training FBI agents are bankers are I'm training consumers if I let them know how it works they're smart enough to protect themselves have given the right tools how do scammers think about scams regardless of whether it's against the person institution what is their mindset what are they how do they do they the feisty scams well first of all it's so easy today four thousand times easier than when I did it because I didn't have the technology that exists today so I get asked a lot how do they know the number they're calling an elderly person listed that number well actually my date with back when I was young if you had to look in the phone book they gave the person's name address and phone number today the white pages dot com tells you who lives in the house how old the people are that live in the house who they're related to in the house so if I break that down on a computer program to what zip codes of the wealthy areas of that particular zip code and then I actually no I'm calling a house with an eighty two year old man or seventy six year old woman and I no they're going to answer the phone so that automatically tells me who my targets are so it is so much easier today because there is so much information out there we live in a way too much information world so scammers are just looking for as much as possible to seem as credible as possible to the person they're engaging with yes and what's happened and what is very scary is that fifty years ago there were con men con women says stood for confidence man and they had to gain your confidence so consequently it was one on one I had to get to know you I was very well dressed well spoken at a great vocabulary was very likable person and eventually I was going to scan your con you but being in the emotion was involved and there was some there was some consideration at about really taking all the person's money and your little bit compassion about stealing everything from them today you're dealing with an individual who's in their pajamas on a laptop with a Cup of coffee in their kitchen in Moscow in China in India thousands of miles away they will never see you you will never see them there is no emotion there is no compassion and unfortunately there will steal every penny you have my guess is Frank added now we're talking about his new book scam me if you can have got calls already the lines are full let's talk to bart from Manhattan bart thanks for calling all of it thing so much Ellison my question is related to security receive a credit cards I own a small business where we process let you kill I'm always what's the latest of the best programs in the ways in received credit card information one more of playing it for example in my key specifically to travel services when were doing third party authorizations do you have any comment on that so much I want to make sure that if whether I own a gym or I have a travel service I am only taking the necessary information that the credit card company requires me to take and then I want to make sure I get rid of that information I don't want to keep that information in a file cabinet or in my computers because then I leave myself open to being breached and someone stealing that that data I do live on a very simple philosophy I lived on all my life and that is that I don't use a debit card I only use a credit card not a credit debit card a credit card visa M. merece mereka express MasterCard discover card because every day I spend the credit card companies money I never spend my money my money said send that money market account earns interest I go to the dry cleaner given the credit card to go the Krister given the credit card if someone gets my number in charges of million dollars on my credit card by federal law I have zero liability I'm not out any money when I use the credit card and I pay the bill or minimum do my credit score goes up so I'm fixing my credit building my credit when you use your debit card you expose the money in your personal account so in every breach we've had going back to TJ Max fifteen years ago after the post investigation the person says well no I had a visa credit card so they cancelled my card the next day two days later they sent me a new card that was the last I heard about it the other guy says no I use my debit card off my credit union they took three thousand dollars out of my checking account it took me about three months while they investigated to get my money back I didn't have access to my money so I only use a credit card this way if I buy something online they don't deliver it I'm coverage if I buy it online and it's broken they won't take it back I'm coverage and if I go overseas in an ATM I use my credit card yes they charge me a fee but the fees well worth the insurance that they're not getting into my bank account and stealing my money let's go Sabrina in a Manhattan Sabrina thanks for calling all of it hi so I I believe is situated resisted opening act an account to add yeah my phone at major department stores for any show as department stores and recently and recently I had they had such a promotion and I couldn't resist I didn't I started asking me questions and they ask me for my social security number and I hesitated for a moment but the promotion they were asked me was so enticing and I just lost it and I took the card and and of course the minute I did that and gave them my social security number I thought for you are stupid I wanna know a why do they insist on getting that and be how stupid am I and and how vulnerable am I now that it's in the system at this major department store you weren't you were not stupid at all but of course all credit bureaus Equifax Experian trans union Bayshore credit on your social security numbers they need your so secure number to search that file to bring it up and make sure it's you and verify that it shoes so the person the clerk was signing up for the credit card has to have that information to give their credit people at the department store to run the credit file my concern is now you've told that person who just works there you told the person that working in the credit office they have that information so the question really comes down to is are those people honest or those people actually being paid to collect that data is well from somebody else and sell it to them that's my only concern about that rather than have a whole bunch of credit cards from department stores and all that I rather just deal with the strict great credit card and this way I don't have any concerns about anybody getting my number or anybody stealing my information because the credit card company will make good on it let's talk to Paula from Manhattan policies she was scammed hi Paula thanks for calling in hi Alison how do you love your show thank you what happened hunt so we hired to construction companies one to build a house and then the other one to speak with the previous contractor didn't finish on it badly both construction companies are kind of in the same way what the first one more severely because the work was wait let their material and I'm finished on the second company also left to work on finish so it seems to me there's so much corruption in a construction company and I wonder if there's anything people can do to protect themselves because sometimes not paying it's just not enough you have to be very careful especially when it comes to roof repairs repairs at home this is why you have the better business bureau you have the state attorney general's office which I like because that someone you elected to office he or she they have a consumer protection bureau they can tell you if those companies have had complaints against them before it's good to check our references but I'll be honest with you what I do if I'm going to have a home repair I do check out all the references but again I tell the guy does your company accept credit cards and if they say yes I give them a credit card because if they don't do the work of the work is not satisfactory I can go back to the credit card company get my money back once I write them a check or I give them the money I'm never going to get my money back I could sue them but it would cost me more money to sue them then it would be that that I.
