"AP's sports and Mike Reeves, it was a frantic finish at the Indianapolis 500, our Tom McKay reports. Josef Newgarden used a one lap shootout to grab the lead from 2022 champ Marcus Ericsson to win the Indy 500. You know, I wasn't looking to take anyone else out of the race, but I was going to put my car on the line to win. And I was either going to win the race or I was going to end up in the wall. Newgarden driving for team owner Roger Penske survived a chaotic final 40 miles, which saw the race stop three times for Rex. The Yankees used a 7 run third inning to defeat the Padres ten to 7, Aaron judge and Harrison Bader hit home runs to support winning pitcher Garrett Cole, who is now 6 and zero. This was a good team win today for sure. I mean, being able to kind of subdue them through the middle innings and keep the momentum. Isaac Paredes homers as Tampa Bay Rays beat Los Angeles Dodgers 11-10
"Tampa Bay Rays used to 7th inning RBI ground out by wander Franco to break a ten ten tie and defeat the Los Angeles Dodgers 11 to ten. Both starters got hit around as Gavin stone allowed 7 runs in two innings of work while Josh Fleming allowed ten runs in 6 innings, including 5 home runs. Reliever Jason Adams says Fleming ran into some bad luck with good hitters, but managed to battle. So I made a lot of good pitches today. If you go back and look and they just found some holes, so they were aggressive early. That's baseball. And he battled for us, which was huge. We needed that out of him. So yeah, to come away with the wind and a well fought game like that is big for everybody. Tampa Bay finishes its ten game home stand 7 and three, while the Dodgers complete their longest road trip of 2023 with a four and 6 Mark. Steve Carney, St. Petersburg.

Mcclanahan allowed just a single run in 7 innings of work to improve to 8 zero on the year. My only motive, I think anybody in here can attest that is did we win? "It's more of a psychological thing and why I feel good about Philly's defense, not trying to overdo anything, is because this is a veteran laid glue, right? Fletcher crops up front. You talk about Josh sweat. You talk about Hassan Reddick. Guys on the back end with Darius slay and Bradbury. This group is not going to change their identity. They've been experiencing a lot of success. Will they be in more critical situations, possibly if the offense is not operating and moving at a high level. They didn't go crazy scoring last week and they got to the tune of 6 sex. I think this defense will be fine. If you had a group of young guys, you probably would have more of an issue about their approach. But I think the veteran presence on this defense, they are going about their business like they're going to win a Super Bowl. I don't think that changes with miss you coming in. Dan, it is the holiday season. I owe you an apology. That was harsh of me. Just for this. There is a parallel. We apologize now. Well, I am. Just personally, this one time, I'm not doing it again don't ever do it. Okay, take us ahead to Saturday. Can you rush was the starting quarterback the last time these two teams met back in week 6 for the cowboys? Is there anything you could take away from that game though if you're the eagles defense? Unsolicited, what happened in that second half better for Dallas? What did they do offensively better? Brandon the ball. Okay, so not only in that game in the second half did they run the football better, but going back and watching it, there was one very specific formation that they got into that they had a lot of success. And if on Dallas and I'm Kellen Moore, I'm coming out running the ball in this three bio formation a little bit of that extended bunch. We call it oak is at the tight end at the bottom of the screen and they ran basically down the right side of their offensive line and the eagles really struggled to like match it. You know, like there's that three by zero. Why didn't bunt tight end by himself? Everybody's outside the box and I think the thing that showed a lot in this situation was the secondary for the Philadelphia Eagles had to be the guys that were tackling. There it is again, these are all in the second half. There's 6 of them in total. We can only do three on television where they just got in the gun that extended bunch ends the ball up and it was Bradbury having to make a tackle. It was dairy slay having to make a tackle. If you're the cowboys, it's like how many different ways can I get in that formation? Maybe sometimes a line and it's motion to it. And let's see if they fixed it. Let's see if Philadelphia has fixed their alignment and then kind of getting the ball to that unblocked defender. Yo, everything you say is right. I think the most important thing you say is removing guys from the box, right? Yeah. Because you pressure linebackers and you pressure the line to actually play technique instead of taking chances because one guy out of their gap may give up a 20 yard game. Yeah. And I think the Dallas Cowboys, to your point, just this game, but specifically going forward. They need to find a number of advantages in the line of scrimmage, right? We talk about the struggles of deck and the turning the football over. This run game is how they're going to go. I absolutely expect to see this formation. And I wonder how they wonder how they're going to respond. I think they do it out of all their different personnel yes, too. Multiple people. The three by O. I was like, he going to the 3000 for him. You knew that? He had a little, yeah. He was ready with it. That's the one you wanted to do. All right. We watched tape. Let's just talk about more. Hey, big reason why the cowboys lost to the Jaguars Sunday was Jacksonville's defense. The Jags had three sacks in the game and Trayvon walker, their number one overall pick, a part of that defense of dominance, but now to a developing story, okay? Reporting from Adam Schefter to date, you won't see Trayvon walker tomorrow night against the jets. The Jags have ruled walker out due to an ankle injury. So we'll keep an eye on that. And certainly this defense has been great with him and they'll be great potentially without him boys 'cause there's so much that you have to think about when you think about the Jaguars defense. Take it away with a little bit more. Well, I think this deep Jaguar defensive line does one thing. Certainly as good as anybody in the NFL and that's kind of getting off the line of scrimmage and engaging with someone and then changing the gaps, okay? So this first clip I wonder what to pay attention to. I really want Marcus to teach. Now this left defensive tackle. This is where I kind of hear the phrase or know the phrase engaged, right? The cowboys are going to run the football and there's no horizontal. See that engagement right there. That defensive tackle is completely locked in. Talk to everybody at home about that initial strike that initial gauge body defensive tackle. Let me also do this, do the step initially from the defensive tackle. You see this foot that's extended right here. Yes. You're the Lion coach when you go into the meeting room and saying, that's a bad step. Okay. But to your point, the engagement. Okay. And the ability to not panic. Right. That's the most important part of this place. Yeah. He did not panic about it because he's reached in any game in your reach. You're meaning that that's how he's trying to get on base. I was trying to get on his outside shoulder and right here it looks like he's won, but don't panic. And what you're talking about. And this is Marcus for me like first. I want you guys to I want everyone to see this. Like this, that moment there of that press. Yes. Right where they were just locked helmet to helmet. That's what stands out to me as an offensive guy. Their last helmet helmet. And they are no longer that press. We used to in the D line world we used to say misstep get physical. And that's exactly what you're talking about with that press. Now, I can actually play two gaps here, right? Because now I'm my extension allows me to get them away from my body. This inside gap is taken away where I probably shouldn't be initially. But now I still can crawl space if need be because I do have that extension on offensive. So you have that engage then you have that press. Now is this the finding of because you're saying both gaps? Is that where he's trying to find where the ball is going? I guarantee you, after you play this play out, this vision right here forces him not to get impatient. Young defensive linemen, they'll just take that gap and get reached and think that somebody's gonna scrape over. But you see how he turns this ball back in. Right. Now look at this picture right now. Would you rather have this? Yeah. Or would you rather have him take that gap inside and have that lane right now? Right, right. That's exactly what happened. So him finding that that was a big deal. So there's that impression and finding the ball. There's that engaged press and fun. The next thing is we talk about changing the picture all the time in football and we often correlate it to like a secondary with a quarterback right. Shows you cover two and rotated to cover three. So everybody at home, I'm gonna teach you guys a little bit about gaps, right? This is called the a gap between the center and the guard. This is the B gap and that's the sea gap, and then another gap would be the date, right? So this defensive tackles responsible for the a, this skyline vector wise, responsible for that beat. And this defensive end is responsible for the sea gap, right? That's that priest picture that's going on. Now I want everyone to pay attention to the change of the picture that that defensive line is going to show you. What happens is the ball gets snapped as you're going to watch this defensive end, go become the B gap player, excuse me, you go become the B gap player that linebacker is going to scrape over the top to become that seagull. See how hard that is? Absolutely. Do that movement so constantly why? The go back to the beginning. All right? This is gorgeous, by the way. Go back to the beginning, and now when they flip Tony Pollard, right? We are now, we now can exchange gaps because the outside run won't be on us as much. When they put this over here, this detacher over this defensive being triggered. All right, the ball might be going that way. Let me get here earlier. My back is getting screamed. This was not about the back hopping. Hopping has an effect on both of these guys. So they seem to gap on purpose. He

"Ever had. Yeah, I think look, man, it is always sad. As an NFL guys that participated in had the opportunity to play in the league, you feel community. Like regardless of if you were a different team and you never got guys in person and I ran into Frank a couple of times, never had Franco a couple times never had any extended conversation. But the thing that I've noticed today is that, yeah, we put the graphic up there of yards and we talk about the immaculate reception, but everybody speaks to his character. And I think that's the way you want to be remembered. I think that's been the most eye opening and learning experience for me is it's been a constant incoming of how he treated people. And I think more importantly, you know, we get obviously we do our job and we love these players and we remember them for their legacy on the field. We talk about numbers and stats on this show. We try to educate people about football, but ultimately I think when something like this happens, even as sad as it is, the fact that his peers and the people that had an opportunity to interact with him talk about the man that he was. And I think when we all pass and we all leave this earth, I think that's the thing we would prefer. People remember about us and how we treated them. And I learned a lot about that today from the people that knew him personally. That was really good to hear and see. It's the true definition of a legacy is who you were as a man who you were as a human being. There's a screen, shoulder, and his status for Saturday against the cowboys is uncertain. I think this is huge news. Clearly changes the way defenses can play them. Jalen hurts is probably gonna be the difference in that game. Everybody knows that I'm dealing with something. I think that's pretty public. I don't put anything past jail and hurts. As far as his mental and physical toughness. So there's a chance he could play this week. Let's get an update on Jalen hurts injury. Gardner menchie see him out there practice today. He got most of the reps. In fact, there was actually no sign of Jalen hurts during the media portion of practice. It's Wednesday, but remember the eagles game against the cowboys is Saturday, so it is a short week. Here's offensive coordinator Shane steichen on the quarterback situation. He's day to day, but he's feeling great. And if he's ready to go, he'll go. And that's where it's at. If gardeners out there, we got all the confidence in the world in him. He's smart, competitive guy, that understands the game. So if he has to play again, have all the comps in the world that he can go out and compete at a high level. So let's bring in a very busy ESPN eagles reporter Tim McManus. And Tim, you've been in the locker room these last two days. What are the players saying about Gardner menchu? A law. In fact, I just got out of the locker room, and according to the players, Gardner minshew had himself a day on the practice field. I asked tight end Dallas got it about it and he thought about it for a second and said, I don't know if the ball hit the ground during the entire practice. So a good start for minshew with hertz sideline with that shoulder injury. The play of the day according to one team made a talk to came on a pressure so the eagles defense blitz minshew. He rolled out and on his back foot through a dime on a crosser to one of the tight ends, according to cornerback avante Maddox, he said, minshew is that guy. You know, they talk about him differently than you would normally talk about at number two quarterback. It's like the minchu legend, the minshew mania has helped solidify his spot as has his actions since he's been here. And you know, he set up really well for success as Goddard told me he said if I were mint you, I'd be licking my chops to have Devante Smith and AJ Brown to throw to to be working behind this offensive line. And the closer we get to Saturday, the more it's looking like mint shoot time here in Philadelphia. Yeah, it's a good point about what surrounds him, Tim, and the other thing, too, is we all know men's shoes already proven himself at the NFL level. So we'll keep an eye on this. Thanks to Tim in Philadelphia for the latest there. Let's dive into the matchup on the other side of the ball where the cowboys are gonna have their hands full with this eagles defense. Man, Billy has at least 6 sacks in three straight games, giving them 55 for the season. That's the most sacked by any team through 14 games of a season since the 2000 saints. The eagles secondary has capitalized on that pass rush as they lead the NFL with 15 interceptions, isn't it nice when it works that way, like the backing can benefit off those guys? Do you get a little bit of a Carson Wentz Nick Foles vibe just from your report right there from Tim just like you are trying to push that, but I know I'm not like when you're you're right. You don't usually hear people talk about talk this way about a backup quarterback. I just remember hearing everyone say that about people. There is definitely a parallel Dan. I'll give you that. It's just when you bring up Carson wins, we have to, anyway, Marcus, if you were on a deep end. And you know that your team starting quarterback is out. How does that affect you? Yeah, human nature is like, we need to elevate our game. Right. Like everybody needs to. But what more are you going to do? This unit is playing well. I think

"Last chance for the Steelers. Trying to get away. And his pass is broken up by Tatum. And he's over. Where'd it go? We grabbed him with 5 seconds to go and score. Ricochet out there off of Jack Tatum and into the man of the year Franco Harris has. When you talk about Christmas miracles, here's the miracle of all miracles. Steelers great Franco Harris died Wednesday at the age of 72. The Hall of Fame running back's death comes two days before the 50th anniversary of the immaculate reception that you just saw the iconic play that helped vault the Steelers into one of the NFL's elite franchises and three days before his number 32 was to be retired by the team. Harris won four super bowls with the Steelers. And this hit especially close to home in the Steelers facility where Mike Tomlin reflected on Harris legacy. This organization in this community, the football world, we lost a great one. And Frank O'Hara, and so obviously we're all heartbroken. But we do look forward to honoring him and his legacy this weekend and obviously where our attention needs to be is on the preparation required to put together the type of performance that's fitting of a great man like Franco. I'm gonna advocate of giving people their flowers while they're here and I meant what I said yesterday. You know, I just admire and love the man. And so must be learned from him in terms of how he conducted himself, how he embraced the responsibilities of being Franco. For still a nation for this community, you know, for the Penn State, followers, he embraced it all and did it with such grace and class and patience and time for people. I developed a friendship with him and every time I got to talk to him, he always had a smile on his face. And, you know, you could talk about the player he was on the field. And without him, you know, there is no dynasty. Because, you know, he kind of, you know, was a jumping jumping off point for that group. But then you talk about the men off the field. And to know that the standard was set with guys like him. Franco Harris ran for over 12,000 yards in his career. At the time of his retirement, following the 1984 season, he had the third most rushing yards by any player trailing only a pair of fellow Hall of Famers in Walter Payton and Jim Brown. Reaction poured in throughout the day from steelers grates and NFL legends. I remember Franco as just a wonderful individual. I mean, he was so special because he knew how to welcome you in. He was such a huge figure, but he knew how to just ingratiate himself with you to make you feel comfortable because you know you knew you were talking to a legend, but he was just, he was just so every day he was so kind, generous. I just remember him, my first year in Pittsburgh, and he decided to have lunch with me and I'm saying to myself, you know, who am I? I'm this young running back. And he befriended me and I was just in awe of him. And I actually told him that I was, I was not a still a fan growing up as a kid. And I actually hated him. And he laughed it off, and he said, well, now you gotta love me. And that's when our relationship really took off. He was a special man and I'll never forget him. Frankel for all the superstars, right? And you've met a ton. And we all have. Was about the most humble decent, kind, giving much more than this brute of a running back. He on offense, epitomize the Steelers on defense and the Steelers grip and really the Steelers city, the crunch time, one yard run, 15 yard run, immaculate reception, Franco was always there for the Steelers. Playing for that organization was somebody that, you know, you saw in the hallways every day for four years. With the championships and the accolades and the history and what he embodied as a player to that community and that city and his passing after the 50th anniversary of such a historic play. So there's a lot of people that make an impact in this game. Players and coaches and everybody alike. So I know that he was beloved in that organization and that fan base and certainly will be missed. Woke up this morning with the sad news of the passing of Franco. So many times people say Franco was a legend or a person was a legend. Now frankl is a legend and always will be more than just on the football field too. Such an unbelievable man. Friend. I'm so proud to be able to call him that. Today was a deep blow. Not only to myself personally, but I think to still a nation just because what he epitomized been a stiller's football player, but what he meant to the entire state of Pennsylvania and of course what he meant to the city of Pittsburgh. He's someone that I've idolized as a player, but more than that I idolize as a great human being. And he taught me so much about giving back to the community. And even when we were out, he would always get bombarded with autographs and stuff, but he was always gracious to everyone, took his time to take photos and really just get to shake everyone hand. So as I'm sitting back and watching them, that's who I thrive to be. That's who I want to be. I want to be like uncle Franco. It was Dwight Kirk's Dwight Clark's the catch. Doug flutie's Hail Mary, you know, it was like those plays that I remember when I started being a kid of falling in love with football was one of those plays that you just saw so many different times. He's obviously one of the more memorable moments and people that the NFL

Steelers Hall of Fame running back Franco Harris dies at 72
"A tough day for Pittsburgh Steelers, Hall of Fame running back Franco Harris passed away overnight at age 72. His son DACA confirmed that the news to the AP this morning and no cause of death given, but really the timing sort of ironic in the sense that the team is set to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the immaculate reception this weekend while also retiring his number 32. The immaculate reception may be the most famous play in football history where he caught an improbable past reigning it in for a touchdown that sort of kick started what became the dynasty that the Pittsburgh Steelers established in the 1970s. Is a National Abortion Ban Scares People As Much As Roe Vs Wade
"Wanted to ask you about the abortion ban issue because I really do wonder if Lindsey Graham brought that up just to hurt us because we didn't have the votes. There was no way it could have worked. It didn't make any sense. The issue was going back to the states. So it kind of seemed like it was just used as a talking point that the left could run on to say, hey, here's some fear mongering. Here's a way that we can get you guys to make sure you vote Democrat because everything's coming to an end. And in reality, there was just no point to it. So what do you think was the purpose behind him doing that? Right. In realistic terms, the only fight we're going to have on the federal level from the for the foreseeable future is over funding of abortion clinics. And that's literally all the fight is going to debate. We're not going to get a national abortion ban and we're very likely not going to get roll back. So we're going to have an argument at the state level. I think that forever national polling show that a majority of Americans supported a 15 week as the break off period. What they don't support is a national abortion ban. And I think that that conversation really made people very afraid. And I don't even know if we have the time. It's our world we don't have the constitutionality to do a federal abortion ban. I mean, it might be as unconstitutional as roe was. So rather than even focusing on that, I just think that Lindsey Graham saw polling and said, oh, look, let's have this conversation now because it's going to popular in past polls and rather than having some candidates like the Doug Montreal, who was the worst candidate of 2020 when they lied. The Douglas Franco, she said, we need to imprison women who get abortions and try them for murder, which really turned off independent voters. I'll make it so well, this will be the new placeholder. So I think he tried in his head and he was going to actually help Republicans and instead he actually worked.

"Kind of like Kate, I think this sort of circles back to what you were saying in the beginning of the show. Keeping it in the community, like selling it to friends or giving it away. I just gave away four bags of baby stuff to someone in my buy nothing group. I gave away some more baby clothes to a friend. I would so much rather give something to a person than bring it to a store like goodwill where I don't know if that stuff is just going to end up in a landfill. I know it's really, it's really tricky. I actually have like a million things sitting out on my front door area for buy nothing people too. If you're interested in buying nothing groups, you can go to buy nothing project dot org if you're trying to find a buy nothing group in your area because they're very local like hyperlocal. But that has been a lifesaver for me in terms of repurposing things that I may not like I'm like what am I going to do this? I should just throw this out and then I post it in the buy nothing group and someone scoops it up and you know like it's going to a place that might actually use it. So yeah, I know that's really on the other hand, on the other hand I know that there are people who rely on places like goodwill to buy clothes and household goods and all that other stuff. But I do think though that what we are seeing right now is a glut of stuff in those types of stores. So I feel like right now my focus is on not contributing to the glut, not worried that they don't have enough stuff to sell. Right, got it. Well, interesting conversation story that I'm eager to continue as we evolve. Yes, same. Well, shall we introduce our guest for today? Let's do that, Kate. "Bring a level of that. Given the story of Alina and given the fact that Castro was still controversial and so polemic and he put the politics in the eyes of many. He's a dictator in the eyes of others. He's a liberator. So there is that possibility of this simplistic take and James Franco could be doing a really bad fucking accent. And it's only going to get worse. You know what I mean? That's ridiculous. Yes, I do know. And he gets to like dip in, play this very famous Latino Cuban character. And then dip out, right? And go back to being a white guy. He doesn't face any of the consequences that people who actually have that accent in America have. Or any of the other markers of being a Cuban identity or being a identity. And so that is part of the problem is that you get to try stuff on and then leave. I think one of the famous cases of this was Miley Cyrus when she sort of dipped into black culture. She did it for a while and then she went back to being like a white girl regular and that's frustrating because they extract, they benefit, and then the community doesn't really get the same investment the same. Right, and then you get the same. Yeah, and then, you know, and then, I don't know. I mean, I'm gonna be honest with you, I really hope the film sucks. I really hope no watches it. I'm sorry. I'm just being honest. I really hope they learn the lesson, but who knows? You know? From the looks of the Internet, you know, the largest cohort of moviegoers doesn't want to see it. So anyway, final thoughts? Yeah, it doesn't seem like a dynamic interesting story. It seems like maybe a particular person's passion project to tell their personal story, but maybe does not need to be writing themselves into the history books in the movie theaters. Yeah, well, you know, a press banners are a thing. So we'll see what happens. Christina, where can people find out more about your work outside of Latino rebels? So visit Latina media ponto ko follow me on Twitter at C Escobar Andrade and of course, always check Latino rebels as well and there all the time. All the people that are defending all my Latino and Latino friends who are defending the casting of Franco as Castro, it goes a little bit deeper. It's not as simplistic. So I hope you learn from this, you know, you got to keep pushing our own stories, our own representation, and that's going to take time. That comes from so many fronts. And you just got to stay true to yourself. And you know what? We don't have to accept everything that gets shoved down our throat in mass entertainment. You can say no to things. And upsetting Hollywood, we have nothing to lose. We have nothing to lose as a community by upsetting Hollywood. Because one day they will respect us. And that is my north star. How's that? "What's frustrating to me is that Latinos are a big part of the market in the United States where a big part of the entertainment market, as I mentioned, we buy more movie tickets, we over index as Netflix subscribers, they need us, but they don't respect us. And it is that lack of respect that makes me feel very frustrated and that they need to learn about us, learn to respect our community, learn to green light our projects authentically and give us the money and support that we deserve. And that is on Hollywood. You know, I think on us. Yes, do still have work in our own house in terms of understanding our own racial diversity and valuing it, but this particular case is not really so much about that. It's just about Hollywood kind of like saying we're going to take your money and spit in your face, and that sucks. You also write a little bit about the defense of the casting. Why in your eyes do you think the defense like the producers talking about? Well, everyone needs to chill, you know, the daughter approved it. And then I'm like, okay, it's almost like they say, we have Latino Friends, right? You know what I'm saying? Yes, it is, like, they have led Friends. There are other Latino casting and like, listen, if it had been like, I don't know, her mom or like a different character, it would have been different. But as you spoke to Fidel Castro, is the most he's so huge in our community. I'm trying to think of a role where if someone else played that role in a cultural, this is the problem, it's just really hard because when you get to issues of race and identity and ethnicity, the complexity of latinidad is always in your face, right? So here's the one. One of my friends, I don't know who it was, but it was posting on Facebook saying, well, you know, Anthony Quinn used to play like zorba the Greek, but then I'm saying, but Anthony Quinn never got to play like Mexican roles. You know what I mean? There weren't rules for Anthony Quinn. So he had to play Greek dudes. You know what I'm saying? That was his career. So it doesn't feel like there's a bigger you know what I'm saying? There's a bigger thing here. Dudes are not underrepresented. Exactly. Say more about that. Yeah, and like, listen, Castro was a light skinned dude, right? His dad was from Europe. There is that level to it for sure. But, you know, if they hired a French actor to play George Washington in a biopic, you know, some people maybe would be white people are so used to seeing themselves and their stories represented. And there are a million movies about George Washington played by American actors. It's still wouldn't be as big of a deal. Like there is no parallel because the structures are so in equal. That's why it sucks. And even when you look to other communities because our race politics are so complex, you can't really compare it either. I don't know, I saw some meme of mocked up movie poster of Ryan Gosling playing Barack Obama in a movie as a comparison. I think that goes too far. Too far. It's not the same. Yeah. Yeah, that's not the same. I think that minimizes sort of the Oscars so white movement that has led to such amazing creativity and voices in black Hollywood and I think that's also part of the problem here. It's like you can't equate this. This is a specific Latino LatinX issue, right? That I don't think Hollywood has ever understood. I actually think Hollywood understands pretty easily the race issue right now because they've been shamed into it. And I don't think the Latino community has fought for our community in Hollywood and then you get people who defend the casting and then you're not going to do anything. And then John Leguizamo, who, to be honest with you, as you know, I've written about him. I don't think everything he says is spot on. He's a fan of Latino rebels, but in this case, whatever it is, I think he was speaking the truth in a lot of ways, your thoughts on all this. I thought he was right on this one, but not necessarily right on everything else he's ever said. I agree with you on that. Yeah, and I think our that's basically, yeah, yeah. Right, there is a level of complexity around ethnicity that is not just race. It's not just what you can see when you look at a person. And if there are folks in decision making positions in Hollywood that understand it, they don't either appear to be making the decisions or they don't care enough to implement that. Sort of more complex layering that is happening here. And yet, it is different. It's not the same as some of the other casting issues and it is the sort of really unique position, but that doesn't make it okay. And we don't have to play like an oppression Olympics either. Exactly. This is very bad. This is bad. Let's fix the whole thing together. Yeah, and you fall into the mistake of which I also wrote about for MSNBC when Black Panther came out the sequel, the trailer of, you know, we need a Latino Black Panther when in fact it's the black creatives of Black Panther that says, we got you. Allyship, come on. Like we're going to bring in mesoamerican characters and we know that Latinos and latinas go see the movies. It's good for business. And that I think needs to be celebrated as opposed to what someone like John Leguizamo or general Rodriguez has said in the past is like, oh, we need a Latino Black Panther. But you know what I'm saying? So I think that's a part of this. So with that aside, who would have played if you could have cast Castro and Elena of Cuba. I got my top choice, but I want to hear yours. Well, the one that I saw circulating was Pedro Pascal, and they do have that passing resemblance. I think that they partly cast Franco to make Castro villain. You know, he can play like smarmy. And I actually think it would be really fun to see him throw a skull in that role. I don't know if people saw him in his Nic cage vehicle, but he kind of towed that line and it was pretty fun. I mean, Pascal was definitely up there for me. And I thought that this is where I think the big problem is, and say more about this point about having the cultural experience and knowledge, the context is an actor to understand who you are playing in this case. And this is, you know, Fidel Castro. That, I think, is being overlooked in your thoughts on that. Yeah, I mean, I do think there's sort of needs to be a deep understanding of the history and the ways in which it impacts our identities. And you know, I think it's also and I wrote about this in the piece and other people have spoken on it as well. This sort of like, you know, James Franco is going to have to learn the accent that he spoke about. I was thinking about the bad accent from. I don't understand Latinos and Latinos who like Scarface. Like I'm just being super honest with you. I hate that fucking movie. Like I hate it. Like people say, I was like, it's a caricature, but that's what I feel. I feel like James Franco is going to be a Tony Montana character as Fidel Castro. Because he has to he's going to be a cartoon villain. Exactly. And not perhaps

And if you haven't heard it, go back into this feed right now and do it. Okay? So anyway, I was traveling. And as you travel, you start getting notifications about things. And one of the things I got late last week was this story that actor James Franco was going to be cast as Fidel Castro in this upcoming independent film called Alina of Cuba that is going to be directed by Miguel bardem, who's the cousin of Javier Bardem and the Latino Latina Internet lost their shit. And it's just been going on for the last couple of days. And when this came out, I was with Hector Luis Alamo, our senior editor and I said, we need someone to write about this. And we actually have the person who wrote about it for Latino rebels. And as you know, we still record remotely. So you might hear some sounds. Of the suburbs, doors closing, whatever, it happens. But if this is going to be a good conversation. So from Denver, Colorado introduce yourself, fabulous contributor. Thank you. Christina Escobar, I am a contributor to Latino rebels and also the cofounder of Latina media punta co uplifting Latina and Finn LatinX perspectives in media. Right, and you also I've seen your bylines in PopSugar and also you're like one of those real movie reviewers now on Rotten Tomatoes. Yeah, Roger Ebert. Yeah, exactly. You are arts editor. You know, we go to you for the films and the entertainment and all that. And we really appreciate it. So before we get into what you wrote, do you want to talk a little bit about why you wrote it? In terms of the facts, what do we know about this film? We knew that John Leguizamo kind of went on Instagram and was talking boycott and I don't know about you, but as your wall been like, I mean, this is all people are talking about all of a sudden. And at least in MySpace, but go for it, Christina. Yes, absolutely. My feeds are full of it. I got DMs about it. People are mad. So the movie Alina is about a daughter a daughter of fetal Castro, who has sort of a famous story. She didn't even find out she was his daughter until she was like ten or something and her story. It's an independent film and the daughter is involved and she did approve the casting of James Franco to play her father. You know, there are other Latinos, but also as you mentioned Hispanic folks. And I use that. Yes, to talk about Spaniards. The Spaniards, the Spaniards were involved. Yeah. To tell this story. And I think it is so fraught because it crosses on so many different issues in our community, right? Representation in Hollywood, but it's also race, right? Why is it okay for a white guy to play him? Do you have to be miss visas? All of those things. And then it's also Castro. It's Cuba, it's our identity. It is the complicated politics of the regions. It's kind of this connection of all of the things that gets our folks riled up on the Internet. Yes, and it's one of the things that I said, you know what's interesting, I'm sure there's people defending it in our community because I've seen several people who are like, why can't he play it? And because he's like from Portugal, he has roots in Portugal and cash flows from Galicia, but I think it goes beyond that, right? I think there needs to be this notion of cultural understanding and the fact that even though this is an independent film about Castro's daughter, the character is still Fidel Castro and that's what you write about right and your piece where it's like he's one of the most global he's in the same sphere as like Napoleon or Julius Caesar or you know what I'm saying like this isn't like Scarface and Al Pacino. You know what I'm saying? And talk more about that. Well, so he is maybe the most famous Latino like one of the most famous Latinos and I have gotten some pushback from the peas and I've heard people be like right his father. If you are arguing that see that'll Castro is not Latino. I think you need to take a breath. And think about that because, you know, he's not Cuban, even I had people say, I was like, oh, he doesn't really even count as Cupid because his dad was. This is the part where it's like, you can take the Latino out and even if you focus on the Cuban, I mean, come on, the guy literally transformed and defined what Cuba was. And defined that history. Yes, of Cuba and the region, the relationship between all of Latin America and the United States is based off of the Castro's actions. And so yes, he's like a Napoleon level huge historical figure. And to have that aspect of it and to have that particular role go to an Anglo, I think is infuriating. And it is in part because or is largely because we don't have anywhere near equal representation in Hollywood. And so listen, if Latinos were getting roles left and right, we were telling our own stories and we were represented as much as we were in the population or even though we over indexes, movie ticket buyers, if we were getting as many roles as we buy movie tickets, then maybe we wouldn't care so much, but that is not the case. We're not getting those roles. We're not getting those parts, and we're not getting the level of representation that we deserve. And that sucks. And so then when there are a few roles and they go to people outside of our community, it's kind of like this double gut punch and that to me is part of why it is so infuriating. And then you get into the specifics of who James Franco is. And yeah, let's not even go there, right? Yeah, I mean, he's a, you know, he wore that time's up pen, and then when that came out, you know, so many people started coming forward with sexual assault allegations. And everyone talks about cancel culture, but here is a guy who's had, I think, close to 30 allegations, and he's getting roles. Still. Being a famous rich, happy white guy, yeah. Yeah. But here's the other thing about it, you know, I got confused for a second because I heard by them and I didn't know it was how we had backed them his cousin, but then I was thinking about, oh, he's related to how red by them. Do you remember when Javier had that? And do you remember when Javier Baldwin was like lamenting about how Spaniards are minorities in Hollywood and we're oppressed? And I'm sitting here going what the hell's going on here? I mean, do you think there's a little bit of in this specific case also given the fact that this is coming off the heels of gordita chronicles, like getting canceled, the batgirl movie, it just felt like here we go again. And I think I've read a couple of pieces from other people talking about sort of the bigger scheme of all this. So what for you, what is the real problem in all this? And why should people be speaking out as opposed to saying, no, come on, you know, it's just, you know, it's acting. He looks just like him. Yeah. I mean, I think it is the pattern, right? Like any individual piece of data would be fine by itself, you know, one TV show gets canceled. Who cared? It's wind all the TV shows. It's older. It feels like so many of them. It's when we're not getting our fair shot. It's when we finally get cast as bad girl, this leading role. And then that movie never even sees the light of day that it starts to get really frustrating. And yes, several people have written about that Clayton Davis over at variety has a really powerful article on it. And I would say the pattern is bad. And

Sorry all different world. No but all the different countries around this lake and america is dead center across from the lake decay. So you have to walk all the way at least halfway around the lake to get to the america of section and when you get to the american section. They have this. This restaurant called a regal eagle. "A. n. ziprecruiter the smartest way to hire. You guys know that. I'm an older person. An old person and you delight in when it is that. I get fooled by the internet. So when this story ended up on my lap today i thought i was being fooled by the internet. You've got a basketball scout. Joey franco you may know him because he recruited chris mills and oj. Mail back in the day. I don't know why you would know that specific thing but he has some claim in this sport and now he's doing something interesting with it. He is starting an app. It is called all star assists and joey franko because i like to go and find some of the offbeat things that you find all around sports in our country. Joey franco joins us now. All star assist. Joey thank you for making the time. Can you explain to the audience. What it is that. This app is because i think they'd find the premise. A little bit hard to believe absolutely and thank you very much for having me on. It's an app that i mean. It's not a dating app. I wanna make that perfectly clear because we're in you know we've been called that a lot of that's not accurate but it's it's kind of a similar idea was inspired by that. We take we pair tall and athletic couples. You know and try to put them together so that they can have children that will play d. one hopefully even make the mba is just as simple as you're someone who feeds talent to oklahoma state. Unlv mont verde academy. You have had some success with this right. I reading. i'm reading here. There's a six eleven former center from creighton that you paired with a six to center from la tech's women's team and that they're happy and in love and she's four months pregnant the part that i couldn't believe that northern illinois and nc state have already offered scholarships. I know that it sounds way when a call creepy offbeat certain people but you know there's probably plenty of apps you can find that or even stranger and and it works. You know we've had a lot of success. It's an idea you know i've been doing this. I've been scouting since i was very young. I'm fifty six years old. And i'm in scouting since i was twenty four twenty five years old. I noticed very early on that the The kids are the players have a tremendous advantage. And not not only you know. They're physical gifts but what they grow up in what's important to them and So i had this idea my mind for a very long time but hey there was no technology for it. The has been in the last bunch years and sure enough. This is this is worked. You know and i'm very hands. I it's driven by analytics data and technology of course but it absolutely requires a personal touch me not very involved personally as a scout always have been tremendous love and concern for the players that i promote and i scout and for example. I'll be. I'll be in the delivery room when that child is born. The one you just mentioned and i'm also registered dollah which has been tremendously rewarding part of my life even separate from from how much you know it feeds into what i do in this and that but being in there in the delivery room and looking out for health concerns such as the baby's hips are treated with the proper care and the newborn gets that little bit of extra oxygen to promote growth. Right from right away right from john. It's i'm full service in this way. And i love what i do. You say hands on. Because i couldn't believe this when i was reading it a seven to ukrainian center played professionally in italy. You paired with the five eleven former power forward from south carolina who played three years in the w nba. Guess like by the way. I can name names privacy series but your information is one hundred percent correct. Is my information. Also correct that because they have so many communication problems in their relationship. That you're someone who helps there too that you're someone who goes to cancun to help with their relationship because this is being filed as altruism joey but this is also something. You're making money off of this as well. I am definitely making money. And i am a professional. Do i am not a licensed therapist or anything like that. But like i say i do love these kids. I take a very personal interest and of course a professional interest and You know like. I say the app is free. The only thing. I ask in return. Is that the i get first. Crack representing them when they're ready to when the ready to turn pro and they're ready to promote themselves and yeah. I know these kids really well. I care very deeply. And so i have. I do everything. I am therapist. I'm father. A mother i'm dula And i listen. I've i've helped many a couple. I've also seen every problem. That young folks can encounter and i like to impart that wisdom and i think i've helped a lot of these kids not just whether regardless of whether you know we ended up with a kidney. Nba not. I just just helping them to their lives and and being successful together. That's that's the most important thing to me. Can you explain the science of some of this to us. Because i'm reading that a couple that you match through your app had a baby that was projected to be seven six as right that's correct and at eleven months old. That baby has hands already the size of yours does your homework tests right. You read the press release yeah. I'm not a huge guy. I'm only five eleven but yeah not a kid. Sanzar almost the size of my now. You gotta you gotta check him without about every eight months because these percentiles change but at simple i mean. It's really intuitive as you might imagine in the sciences you get to to real big people. You got a decent chance of creating really big child and does who are on the lookout for and there. There's certain determinative factors that chromosome and otherwise you can look at but it's not an exact science but then even if these kids don't you know yield we've had a lot of kids you know that we had a kid that was six nine to twenty five. Couldn't play a lick couldn't play you know. But that's that is what it is. There's no penalty for that. Of course you know at least not to not to them not to the families but you know it just is a leg up. It's it's an advantage and it's a way to get in their early but not not to exploit these people but to nurture them to bring them along. Joey i've gotta be at least a little bit cynical there. I mean you can't make this about a love story. This isn't i mean come on. It's nice that that is sometimes the end result. But you're not doing this for love or at least not love between two people might be love of basketball and business. What then. I am a businessman. It is a business i mean. I'm sure you love sports and you love talking into a microphone..

"I'm sure you could find your joys in there but it just wasn't for me so anyways that's why i started making videos and then you you become this like vehicle for brands so we know that brand game. Yup that's lucrative in gray especially fit aligns with your content right but then that also seems like it's not a permanent solution writing 'cause when you when you watch tv. They're like six ads. But it's not the actors or the reality star saying the ads. It's like there's a pause and then you see ads. Yeah and then they come back right and you don't associate like even longoria with glade because she's not holding it in sing like by the way this is some dope air freshener. Yeah whereas we are. Yeah so it's like. How wild is this media model like how crazy and the fact that we're not valued for that reason like i think there's so much more value in creators because we are putting our faces our voices behind products will in. We're making it interesting. And were making it relatable. And like i don't do a brand deal if i don't like the brands like the product. No thank you. But like if i do then i'm gonna talk about it in whatever way works for me. So it's i think it's interesting. I was thinking about this. I think yesterday with a friend of mine who works commercially traditionally. And it's so weird that people look at people that have like super bowl commercials or at and t. commercials and like. Oh my god. That's the that's the girl. And then we do brand deals. And then we'll lear like oh you're selling out and it's like what just because this is an on. Tv doesn't guy may commercial. Act door right. i think. I think is changing. I hope it's changing. I think also when you zoom out like damn everything is fueled by the money only well. That's the reason tv started. i think it was advertising. And so then they were like how do we get people to watch our ads. And that and now we create show's content is just a vehicle for pushing products how scary capitalism grossberg from it and we love but we also hate it. It's the worst but it's the only way that we can live in this society because that's what it's built on but maybe it's going to change may not the capitalism is gonna on crash but i think even looking at the travel space now. This is another thing that i've been thinking about a lot. We did this on the show. Like i always fell in love with the sustainability pieces. Yeah there was also another article in the new york times about plane shaming like travel. Shame short shirt has co two emission rights pollution. Yes yes eco-friendly tourism. And all this stuff and like when you think about the future of ads and brand deals and all the things that make money yeah. We'll we pivot to be more sustainable. Will there will model shift. will it be more like. Hey pay ten bucks. A month to subscribe to my channel. Just like netflix. Says model is like there's a subscription model. You don't see ads on netflix. Right would that be a viable option to what get away from from. Randy's maybe i mean i i abs- that's definitely like. Hbo started that way. Hbo was the first network. That d- did that model of like you pay no ads. You're getting premium content and then. Hbo just needed to get as.

"One of these patches at franco's house but prosecutors argue that franco wasn't just preparing for crisis he wanted to trigger one in december twenty fifteen as germany's immigration office was totally overwhelmed with the influx of refugees. I put on rex. Franco disguised himself black black and my brand with shoe put shoe polish and his beer and i did a bit of darkening cream mind and his mother's makeup on his face and hands form to fill in in broken english. He told a police officer in his hometown. Lost him during the journey or whatever they had fled the war in syria and losses papers along the way our story. He was photographed and fingerprinted soon after he qualified for benefits and housing and eventually was granted the status to live and work germany. He had created an entirely new entity for himself and as he was living alive splitting his time between the military base and the housing had been given as a refugee. None of franco's military superior choice reported any suspicious behavior instead was being considered for a promotion to platoon leader. Prosecutors believe franco was planning an attack. That was meant to be blamed on his fake refugee identity and create a national backlash against immigrants. Franco told me the whole fake refugee stunned was an undercover investigation of chancellor merkel's migration policy. He said he planned to publish a report he never did. But it's actually become is main line of defense in court. His lawyers argued is the chancellor merkel's immigration policy endangered national security and against the will and the good of the german people franco gave me the argument to my serving the right ones or not. He said that as a soldier who swore an oath to protect the constitution. You need to put into question the way he was doing what he was trained to do. This is what we are supposed to do. As officers and following his inner guidance in order to keep the standards high franco.

"So this is where you grew up. A driver up doesn't necessarily of visa fito appearing small city a lot of foreigners he says females doing gun stores lend credence in all of germany. There are a lot of pharmacy. Seth particularly here one. I'm in the course of reporting the story. I spent a lot of time in franco's hometown often off. It's an old working class city just outside of frankfurt see. It's quite diverse. Yeah we are a bit of everything so and it's one of the most diverse cities in germany you can see the whole life alison immigrants and their children have long been the majority here when frankly grew up here in the ninety s. He went to school with a lot of kids who had an immigrant background. Franco's own father came from italy years later franko. What described the program that broad stat germany as a deliberate plot to mix racists. He said he himself was a product of this perverse racial hatred. But people. He went to school with any of that coming. I called several of his old classmates and teachers would never have the idea of him. Being right wing at all and most of them was shocked. When frank who appeared in the news back in two thousand seventeen i was teacher in cilicia since one thousand nine hundred eighty eight. One of his teachers remember some particularly well. His name is peter. Todd franko for three years in middle schools. Ask vice is totally into yet. Was part of a generation of teachers would come of age after the nine hundred sixty eight student movement mid the lack of when young people as their parents how was auschwitz possible. Polar he would often bring auschwitz survivors into his class to tell their stories offshoot spa. It's one of the ways. Germany's tried to prevent nazi ideology from ever taking hold again. I teaching that history with brutal honesty and in forensic detail device Mit peter said franco was a good student and what stood out to him was. Frank was willingness to question everything. So how did someone from such diverse city and tolerance city like offenbach in a school. Like the shilla school. How did someone like that become radicalized. First day article by most under kunda as far as how franklin came to hold far right views. peter says he doesn't understand lonzo wonders. Gus is trying funds. I'm funds on oprah. Does who's going if maybe it started with grandfather deaths. Hunter bunny style. We said it was close to frankel. Frank's grandfather died in two thousand and five. But i was able to find out a few things about him. He was a member of the nazi party. I found us members of card at the national archives. He joined in one thousand nine hundred ninety nine. I also visited his grave and carved into the stone. Where norse runes that re popular among the s. the nazi party's elite forces. When i spoke to frank was mom. She told me that a father and franco had been close. They all lived in the same apartment building and broncos own father left when he was young. I asked her about the copy of mine. Comf- police found when were investigating franco and she said it originally belonged to a father. Franklin denies that his grandfather was a big part of his life but he acknowledges that they spend time together and that his grandfather would tell him stories about his adventures in the war in one voice. Memo from twenty. Fifteen frankel recounts standing by his grandfather's grave and thanking him for his guidance..

"Do you think it's credible. Do you think it's true. Tell tell the story first and then and then. Then let's talk about whether it's still solit- still it's This is your version. Yeah so we go there we are. We are we do. We have been drink but no no. No i'm mixing up things now. We met together at these nice cafes. Vienna franco claimed he found the gun one night when he was out drinking with friends in vienna to relieve myself. You say that. He said he peeled off from the group to pee in some bushes on the side of the street weapon lying on the floor and there it was on the ground i took it. It was a pistol. I took it. Put it into so. He said he put it in his coat pocket weapon and then he said he forgot about it the rest of the evening so he told me he only remembered it and the security line at the airport the next day and then hid in a panic to police station. Just leaving there. He said he only went back to retrieve it so he could turn it into the police safe and by his own admission. The thing is it doesn't seem to be credible at all. It's not a credible story. I'm aware of that prosecutors. Believe eat bought the gun several months earlier in paris. It's a vintage french handgun. It was the pistol of choice of german officers during the nazi occupation of france. It was unregistered and couldn't be traced they also say he was an illegal possession of several other weapons including a g three combat rifle which still hasn't been found. Where are the guns. I don't know well whatever guns And when i asked frank about these guns icon. I cannot answer your question. No he was cagey but if ever there is something like guns. It's in the context of being ready full protecting i your relatives and then all the other who are in need. He claimed that if he ever did have weapons it was only to be able to protect his family in a crisis situation. Did you hide them somewhere. I have the weapon. I have nothing. He has since admitted in court that he in fact did have these guns. He said he got rid of them but he refused to tell the judges where the guns are now. Prosecutors believe that franken wanted to use them to kill and they have evidence that they say points to several possible targets thing with With cloudier where started Accusing me of heaven planned terror plot against politicians. They have handwritten notes about cloudy award. A member of the green party and one of the vice presidents of the german parliament. It was like a pocket calendar. Where wrote about where we mentioned to name. I couldn't even remember it. What did you write about her. When i asked frank about these notes it was something. Like i had. I had learned about her. He repeated some disinformation about her. That's popular in far right circles. She had identified with a saying that goes germany. Never again or germany. Die you dirty piece of of excrements and For politician was serving a german interests. Couldn't understand that. And at that point. When i read that i got angry about this and the wrote down. Her name and cloudy has said never again as a never again auschwitz. But she didn't say germany die so then they they took it this as some kind of like an intention of doing whatever harmful action against which is not the case at all. I recently learned that in this pocket. Calendar where franken wrote down claudia's name. He also wrote people like you suck our people dry. You have to pay and locate where she is just just. I also asked franco about the jewish activists annetta kahane and the fact that in the summer of two thousand sixteen franco visited the parking garage for office. One reason why anachronistic comes a lot is that you were actually in her parking garage taking pictures and use that About this point because it's a very sensitive point. Actually i would love to talk about this really but some because there's nothing there's just nothing but what you say why you went just why you ever i went. I never said that went. But i think people know that you were there because you took pictures and your phone was taken and which is on my phone but then this doesn't prove that i was there in some in some way. That's the situation. Yeah so that you were there. I just don't talk about it here. i can just talk about this you can just talk about it in protest. Ethical determines then This person would have gone there. And this day probably person wouldn't have been there otherwise it would have talked to her. Maybe you are. Some workers were there and tranquil said that hypothetically he just wanted to talk to annetta each and then he launched into another kind of defense even if this was true which is is not definitely not then it would be if ever at worst it would be peparation of assassination. Where is to state endangering this person's not even a politician. How can this be terrorism. This must be just an murderer or prepared murder. He claimed that planning to kill or even killing inada shouldn't constitute an act of terrorism. You can prepare as many inasmuch as long as you want. They cannot put you give you a trailer for this. But the law is very clear on this point. Killing or planning to kill annetta would constitute an act of terrorism. If it's inspired by a larger political aim and prosecutors say franco had that aim. Do you wanna talk to her about what did you ask her. We cannot talk about this kind can only talk in in conjunction with ever. What might you have asked her if you had gone there.
