Fueled By Climate Change, Hurricanes Are Causing Industrial Accidents. Who's Liable?

"So, you just got back from the Gulf coast where you were covering Hurricane Laura. How was your trip? The, hurricane damage was really bad. You know a lot of people down there have lost their homes, which is hard to see. Yeah and just to remind everybody Laura was the one that hit the Texas Louisiana border in August. This storm is clearly roaring. You're reaching that critical moment here. This now joins an elite group. It's in the top ten, a small elite group of the most dangerous hurricanes to ever make landfall into the US residents along the Gulf coast are bracing for potential devastation, Hurricane Lara and that area is so flat. It is so full of petrochemical facilities to their these refineries, a lot of new natural gas infrastructure, their chemical plants that manufacture all sorts of things like plastics and solvents actually even the raw materials for p. p. e., a lot of them are manufactured. Rubber gloves and surgical masks. So so what happened when the hurricane of hit all of that a lot of them shut down and when petrochemical facilities shutdown they usually release a lot of pollution right stuff that can't safely sit in pipes. So it has to be released or burn and preliminary estimates just in Texas showed that more than four million extra pounds of pollution were released. That was actually before the storm even made landfall. But the reason I wanted to talk to you is because one chemical plant caught fire because of the storm that is a look at I ten, which has now been shut down as these plumes of smoke emerged about an hour ago. The governor now is confirming this as a chemical fire has made an emergency crews responded to the inferno at via lab in Lake Charles which manufacturers pull supplies. Okay. So we've we've talked about this on the show before it didn't chemical plant in Texas catch fire after another hurricane Hurricane Harvey. Ago Yes and we talked about it on this very podcast because that fire in Texas started this totally new kind of legal battle, a climate change criminal lawsuit, and I have to say so far there is no indication that this most recent fire will lead to similar litigation but with this really active hurricane season that we're having in the super hot water in the Gulf of Mexico hoping spawn these strong. Storms head right for America's petrochemical centers I thought it might be a good moment to revisit that story and the questions that raises. So this episode, we're going to hear that story. It's a story that asks this question can companies and the people who work for them be held responsible, even sent to prison for failing to adequately prepare for climate change, you're listening to shortwave the daily science podcast from NPR. Okay Becky, take us back to the beginning of this story. So it's a story that happened in twenty seventeen at a chemical plant near Houston Texas, and it's when this major hurricane struck. We are coming on the air for breaking news. This is Hurricane Harvey, Hurricane Harvey barreling into the Texas coastline as a category four storm with one hundred and thirty mile an hour winds. It's yeah, I remember. Hervey was kind of unique because it made landfall and then it just kind of stopped and sat on top of Texas, just dumping and Dumping Rain. Some places got as much as sixty inches of rain. There was a lot of flooding obviously, our primary layer of protection was our power supply. When the storm hit we lost our primary power. You're hearing a guy who is a division president at one of those petrochemical companies that was overwhelmed by the flooding. His name is Richard. Rendered the company he helped run it's called Arkham. We brought in emergency generators to provide backup power. So what he's describing his in the aftermath of the storm, those generators were compromised. There's this intense effort to keep the power on at the Arkansas plant outside Houston. The plant is near a major highway. It's in a relatively residential area. So why were they fighting so hard to keep the power on basically because the plant was full of chemicals that have to be refrigerated Otherwise they catch fire. We do have that breaking news that we've been bringing you throughout the five o'clock hour this brand new explosion and a fire burning. As we speak the Arkham plant in Crosby, you can see that plume of black smoke billowing into the air. In fact, you can see it for miles and miles away. So they make organic peroxides which are. Volatile Chemicals, they're used to manufacture plastics and other stuff and organic rock sides are pretty hazardous because they can catch fire if they get warm right and they don't even need a spark, right. So organic peroxides contain both fuel and oxygen and when they become unstable, they heat up on their own and catch fire. Yeah. I can really hear that PhD coming through. So the Arima plant, it had a lot of refrigerated warehouses and buildings to keep these chemicals cold, and they also have a bunch of refrigerated trailers outside those warehouses. Okay. So talk me through it. What happened that resulted in the accident so harvey was stalled over the Houston area, just dumping rain for days and the refrigerated warehouses, the buildings they were flooding as the warehouses flooded. The employees were using forklifts to move containers of these chemicals from one refrigerated warehouse to another to try to keep them dry and cool, and the water just kept getting higher and higher and the electrical generators for the buildings started. Flood that's not good and then the forklift flooded. Okay. So would you do when you're forklift floods? So according to the US chemical, Safety Board investigation employees at the plant started carrying individual jugs of these highly flammable liquids in the dark my chest high water while it was still raining to get it to the refrigerated trailers we talked about because only the trailer still had power. Yeah. I read this report and it was terrifying like I can't imagine being one of those people still there as they're in like deep water trying to move these chemicals at one point, one of the trailer started to turn over. On their side. It was really like super scary. Yeah and you might be able to guess what happens next the trailers flooded they weren't refrigerated anymore the chemicals got warmer and warmer until they caught fire. So did people get hurt when the fire started in the plant? Well, the plant had been evacuated. So the employees were okay that we know of but there were some first responders who say they were injured while they were patrolling the area that had been evacuated specifically that there is and respiratory tracts were urinated by air contamination and there were some people who live nearby who also say they were injured. By the smoke and the ash from the fires. So we knew the chemicals themselves can be toxic was the smoke from them toxic as well. That's a good question. So when the chemicals burned, they actually just turned into carbon dioxide and water, but I talked to multiple organic chemists and they explained that the problem is actually the containers that were being burned a chemist at Bryn Mawr. College Name Michelle Francis explained it this way everything from the labels on things to whatever plastic or metal that the containers are made out of all that stuff is GonNa absorb other chemicals that didn't burn entirely. So the ashes nasty. The ashes nasty so that ash is made up of container junk and chemicals that didn't totally burn. That's the stuff that potentially could have harmed the first responders and the people close by and it's not something you ideally want in the air or water right so much. So that in two thousand, eighteen, the district attorney's Office for Harris County Texas announced criminal charges against the plant manager who was actually one of the people carrying those chemicals through the water. And Armas North American CEO, and later they also filed charges against a third person and executive at the company which was really surprising to a lot of people because in general, the criminal courts aren't used to punish companies in their employees for polluting the air and water especially when it happens during big storms and I went down to Houston interviewed the district attorney about it. Her name is Kim Og-. The. Charges are environmental. They are reckless emission of an air contaminant and endangerment of persons. Reckless emissions of an air contaminant feels like a bunch of words that be polluting lawyers like. Big Words. So why did she say she was filing these charges you mentioned that there were a lot of petrochemical plants around Houston that flooded and leak stuff during Hurricane Harvey is there something about these fires that was worse? Yeah I asked her that and one argument she made is that the fires happened because people at Arkham ignored the risk of flooding like they should have known that their plant could flood like that and prepared better. For example, the plant is in a flood plain and even though Harvey dumped more rain than any US storm on record the argument the county is making. Is that there were signs that flood risk was increasing before harvey because of Climate Change we've had new normal in Houston. We've had three five hundred year floods in just a short period of time, and it's true that flooding is getting more frequent and severe in. Houston as it is in many parts of the country and something climate models have been predicting for a long time that extreme rain will get more likely as earth hotter including rain from hurricanes. So in this case, the county is basically arguing that the company had a responsibility to recognize that flood risk was increasing and do. More to keep their chemicals from catching fire. So obviously, the company doesn't agree or they wouldn't be in the middle of a trial right now what is the company say? So after the indictments for announced, I interviewed two of the layers representing Komo and its employees. One of them is pretty well known in Houston been working for a really long time. His name is Rusty Harden Arkham did everything they were supposed to do here hardened says the company followed all the regulations it's required to follow. He seemed pretty galled that employees were facing criminal charges trying to find scapegoats and calling individuals felons. Are you kidding me this is outrageous. It's morally legally ethically wrong and the point he made is that if the current regulations for chemical companies in flood prone areas aren't enough. Then the regulations should be changed by legislatures not by courts and especially he argues by criminal courts sometimes bad things happen that there's no crime. There's no responsibility is not anyone's fault we need to look forward to. The future and make sure that we are prepared for these kinds of things if this is going to be the new norm in many think it is. Okay. So becky, like what is at stake in this trial if the county wins and the company loses will that change how we think about climate change in the law it could actually yeah, I talked to this Guy David Omen he's. A law professor at the University of Michigan, and one thing he said that I think is really interesting is that environmental laws and regulations are generally based on this underlying assumption that the future will look like the past today. Already, we expect companies to be prepared to handle what I might call ordinary rainfall. What climate change is going to do among other things is change our definition of what is ordinary rainfall. Another way to understand it in a legal context is that you can be held accountable and punished. If you don't prepare for something, you should have seen coming. It's the idea of foreseeability so. Like if you know that climate change is happening, does that mean it's foreseeable and you should prepare for it yet that's the big question exactly and how foreseeable extreme weather is hinges in part on how businesses inform themselves about the climate science that's available to them, right? Yeah. Like I talked to an environmental lawyer at the Conservation Law Foundation Alina Mehalle that foreseeability isn't just a question of did you personally know that this could happen but it's really what kind of maps were available to you. What kind of experts did you hire to inform yourself about this decision? What kind of modeling

"Hey, what's up welcome to the? podcast of politics, race and culture from a POC perspective Miami. and. We have a special guest joining us today from Orlando Florida. His name is Desmond me. He's a big deal. He's the Executive Director of the Florida Rights Restoration Coalition, he's the author of the new book. Let my people vote Desmond Welcome back to in the thick where those star as love it that he brought him. Desmond Welcome welcome. Well, what a journey it's been. I mean for your life but since we last had you on, it was early in two thousand eighteen and at that time you were still fighting to restore voting rights to Floridians who had passed felony convictions or is your organization calls them what I like to say these are returning citizens. This is a mission for you because you talk about inclusive democracy says, is someone who went from serving time for a felony conviction to being homeless to graduating law school and your stories. Incredible. What has been your experience with this? What is your story and what inspires you to organize for restoring Buddha Rights There's two main reasons you know in two thousand and five you know I did hit rock bottom. So I was standing in front of railroad tracks waiting on the train and come so I can jump in front of it That's how far down the road I'd on. And But for some reason, they're trained income that Dan I did cross those tracks and I checked myself into drug treatment and moved in a homeless shelter, and after that I wrote in school and to eventually get a law degree but I could not practiced law because I'm not allowed to apply to the floor the bar until my civil rights have been restored this last election cycle, my wife ran for office and I couldn't even vote for. So. Then later in the year two, thousand, eighteen in November a constitutional amendment. Amendment for passed through a ballot initiative in the state of Florida, you spent so many years fighting for this. Let's listen back to the moment that he passed your organization, the Florida Rights Restoration coalition shared this on social media. So. This amendment basically means that roughly check this out one point four, million, one, point, four, million returning citizens in Florida could have their voting rights restored after they completed all of the terms of their sentence now. We know that. Black Americans are four times more likely to lose their right to vote according to the sentencing project and we're in this really historic. Some would call it traumatic moment of twenty twenty where we have the corona virus disproportionately impacting people have cutler. We have a national uprising in defense of black lives pushing frankly for a complete overhaul of the criminal justice system because. People see it for what it is. So, just let us know how you're doing how you're processing all of this because. We fight for these rights to vote like for example, I became a citizen you fight for the right for returning citizens to vote. And then you're watching your democracy. Really. Be Challenged, how're you doing for Reals Desmond Maria I am doing much better than what would expect. Because when I'm seeing everything that's going on, it's getting excited right and really help me to fully appreciate what we were able to accomplish in passing amendment for. And Passing Amendment for actually sets the stage for where we at and how amendment for is going to help this country turn over a new leaf and emerged from this chaos and these conflicts and tensions almost like Oh. PHOENIX, emerging from the ashes, a sense of renewed hope and correction and understanding, and imagining not the old democracy but a new democracy, and I'm telling you everything lines up because when you think about that amendment for. Created a pathway for one point four million people who had some type of personal intimate connection or action with our law enforcement system. Right. When you think about Francis the killing of Ahmad Aubrey where a prosecutor to go the seventy days before they decided the charge of people at murder. This man in broad daylight right prosecutors are elected and who knows better about prosecuted in someone who's been prosecuting then you talk about George Floyd. Having that. Put His Leon neck for eight minutes and forty six seconds and killed this person in broad daylight with his hands in his pocket like he had no care in the world right who know better about having a need on their negative in someone who has been arrested by a police officer who knows better of the aggressive takedown tactics of law enforcement ease sheriffs are elected in these chief of police are appointed by mayors who are elected in new. When you think about the judges that stand in judgement I, mean who knows better than the people I record package

Cardinal Becciu: Vatican official forced out in rare resignation

"Somewhat shocking announcement, Pope Francis accepting the resignation of one of the Catholic Church's most powerful cardinals. The announcement was brief even by Vatican standards. It said Pope Francis had accepted the resignation of Italian Cardinal Angelo Bachchu, and that bet you left both his head roll at the office that decides who becomes a saint. And renounced his rights as a cardinal, including voting for the next pope. The pope essentially sack the cardinal, says Vatican expert Joshua Monica. "Yeah. So today we're discussing Michelle. mouton. A woman. We've this is this the first time we've discussed a woman on the show. This might be the first episode dedicated to a lady. which is a bit embarrassing. I would say so yeah. But no better woman to start off this trend with and Michelle. She is easily one of the best rally drivers ever. She's a beast. So I'm really stoked that we can tell the story even if it took us a little while to get to it, that's on us but but it's interesting because motorsport is really one of the sports where women and men compete against each other as true like she's not the best. Female driver ever. She's one of the best rally drivers at. Yeah. Regardless of gender she's one of the greatest. and honestly like just watching a video of her rally driving makes me sweat. Over, yeah she's like she's the person who when we talk about. Like rally cars now are all-wheel-drive. Wheel drive. But when Audi showed up with quattro and just started smoking everybody that was Michelle. Meantime that was young Mouton Bay. mouton on the track. Yeah I mean. To your point James like drag racing of course is or was kind of dominated by women at one point all the force sisters were just tearing it up. There's really no reason. For it to be separated by gender in in Motor Sport Really of course right now there's the there's the W. series, which is a like a women's open-wheel series. At I think that's more for them to kind of get exposure and it proved themselves in like a formula car but I'm looking forward to seeing some of those drivers come up in the formula. One. Soon hopefully, it would just make it more interesting for crying out loud if nothing else I agree let's get into it a. all right. Let's fired up. All Right Michelle Mouton entered this world on June twenty third nineteen, fifty one in the French Riviera more specifically the idyllic town of grass cross grass Ross. The Idyllic town of Gross France, the perfume capital of the world grassi surrounded by fields of aromatic flowers and home to Francis. Oldest perfumery GALLIMARD. Look I'm friend by far French is the language that I have the hardest time pronouncing both words and names I apologize profusely to anyone with a modicum of sense of how to pronounce stuff I. Think you're doing great. I think I think here like right there. Thank you, Joe, unlike many drivers whose family have a history in the sport returns family made a living growing roses and jasmine for the perfume industry mouton spent her youth skiing doing ballet and excelling in school. But just beyond the flower fields sat the mountain. Stages used for local rallies and wouldn't be long before the engine notes trickling down into the valley beckoned to Michelle mcgann discovered her love of cars at fourteen years old when she would steal her father. Pierre's Citron to seavy and take it out for joyrides. Quote for me at the time a car always meant freedom and independence she said but driving wasn't something she could possibly see a future in it for anyone to envision that path for mere enjoyment to making something your life's purpose but you could argue this especially from. Models for women on the racing stage were few and far between. So after graduating high school Bhutan took up odd jobs working as a ski instructor, a Care Assistant in a home for the disabled and eventually at her father's insurance company until she began studying to be a lawyer but something unexpected would quickly put an end to that career path her entry into a competitive rock and roll dance contest.

Pope seeks to 'liberate' Virgin Mary from the Mafia

"Pope Francis wants to liberate the virgin Mary from the mafia pope Francis has given his blessing to a new Vatican think tank that is seeking to prevent the mafia and organized crime groups from exploiting the image of the virgin Mary for their own illicit ends the Vatican's pontifical Marian academy launched the think tank at a conference entitled liberating berry from the mafia it was a reference to the historic relationship between the Italian mob in the Catholic Church and the popular displays of Marian devotion by mobsters in Italy and beyond Francis said the displays of devotion to Mary must conform to the message of the gospel and the teachings of the church and the people participating in them must be Christians who look out for others especially the poor I Walter Ratliff

"Back with more of my interview with Francis Ford Coppola about making his masterpiece the Godfather we spoke in twenty sixteen after the publication of the the notebook. He put together while preparing to make the movie the notebook he carried around and referred to throughout the shoot. Did you worry though that the film was setting the right. Ah Ample because the characters became such heroes of popular culture. And they'll were Italian Americans who felt that like you were discrediting Italian Americans. Well you know in truth. I was worried about so many things in making of that movie. I you know I was about twenty nine when I started. I had two kids in one about to be born and had absolutely no money. I was making what had become a more important film than it was when I got the opportunity because the book had continued and you'd become more and more important than I had no power and yet I had real opinions on how it should be done and I was always just trying to luke bluff the the studio to let me do it my way and and I it was just the most frightening and depressing thing experience. I think I've ever had. I'm sorry to hear it. Thank you so much for making the movie in spite of it so You right when you actually. You are invited to direct the movie by by the studio by paramount. You sat down and read the book and you write. I read eagerly but barely finished it. And you almost didn't make the movie because you you didn't really. He liked the book and despite of the Nice things he said about Mario Puzo. What didn't you like about the book? Well I had thought from its title and intriguing logo and the name Mario. Are you puzo that this was a kind of Italian intellectual writer like a kind of You know more obvious something and it was going to be a piece piece about the subject of power and while indeed it was about power. I found the book itself. More like a kind of bestseller attempt like Nursing Wallace Book. People don't remember it but maybe a third. If not more of the Book Concerned This Young Woman Lucy Mancini and her private anatomy problems. uh-huh and love affair with the doctor who fix them and I just couldn't believe How low class that was but that was you know not included in the movie and so it didn't didn't didn't harm the remaining part which we all know? Did you ever tell Mario. Puzo your thoughts about the novel. Sure he knew new and and you know He. He had written a beautiful book called the Fortunate Pilgrim which he felt was the best book he wrote which also was about immigrants but it was very respected by writers and and it was. What's the beautiful book? But it didn't make money you know like so many die in my head toward his children and they wanted to give his children some better life and he wrote this hoping it could make a lot of money for him so it did so you write to yourself in the Godfather Notebook with the Godfather there is always the possibility ability of immediate and sudden violence. That's certainly true. You had to decide how explicitly violent to make. What was your conversation frustration with yourself? About how the violence should be handled. Well I confess that I was very impressed with author pens Money money and Clyde and thought about that one watching Sonny Corleone shot without a doubt and I thought that the the effects the be depiction of violence and money Clyde always had an imaginative. Twist to it that it's one. Think this he someone shoot someone but if there's a detail away the blood turns into mist and I saw that in In in Bonnie and Clyde I thought was just absolutely wonderfully done and I looked up. Who had done the special effects and that wonderful man? Ad Flowers his name was Worked on the Godfather and On apocalypse now and he was just the most You know in the film industry you deal with a lot of people on the crew. Who are sort of genius in the rough life? You know the way they come up with ideas for special effects. And what have you and I've been blessed to To have those people helped me and making Camila films are tremendous collaboration. As you know. It's not it's not a one man show by any means okay. Well perhaps the most at least one of the most most memorable scenes implying violence in the godfather is low horse's head scene. It's the scene good example because it's not done in the movie the way it's done in book. Yes okay so let let's why don't you set up what happens like what what happens in that. Same well It's a famous movie producer. Who is proud of his? It's a stable of a beautiful stallions and priceless. A horse could cost the half a million dollars or more in the forties and They've asked him to cooperate with their their requests to give the singer the role and What happens famously? Is that the the the producer wakes up and he sees a shadow in. I'll describe it. The way it is in the book he sees shadow and he opens his eyes and he looks and he sees the severed head of his beloved and prized stallion. That has been decapitated when I had to direct that I I thought well gee you know maybe it would be interesting if at first the man to trick them to make it think something else that maybe he had been mortally wounded that he he wakes up and he feels something weird and he uncovers the sheet and there's some blood and maybe his leg has been shot shot off or he's been castrated or you know let the audience thinks something else has happened and then as he panics and flings the bloody sheets Away it would then reveals the severed head of the Horse in your notebook you keep a list of pitfalls of things that you're afraid to fall. English should avoid the pitfall to not fall into for this senior right. If the audience does not jump out of their seat on this one you have failed too much in the Cormon horror film tradition would be a mistake and you had worked for Corman early on in your career right One must find the perfect balance of horror without losing the threat of the overall film. Deliver it and get out so You want it a kind of horror element but not to make it kind of cheap horror film. Yeah and also everyone knew they had read the book that was one of the famous scenes of the book. So how could I mislead lead them to think that maybe what they thought was going to happen. wasn't gonNA happen for a second and that's why put the Horse's head in the sheets so that he you could think the blood was his own blood. At first so casting Marlon Brando was just such a really brilliant stroke and stroke of luck as Europa but again him And I WANNA play. Mary Puzo told me in Nineteen ninety-six when I interviewed him about Casting Brando but how Brando got cast in the movie so Can I play that for you. And then okay. So this. Is Mario Puzo. Who wrote the novel? The Godfather speaking with me in nineteen ninety-six about casting Marlon Brando. I'm the guy picked burn. You did pick Brenda all sure I I wrote him a letter and he called me up and we had chat and then I tried to get paramount to take him and they refused and then director came on and picture. I talked to Director Francis Copeland. He managed to talk paramount than to letting Brando play the role but was was my data cache Branko which caused me a lot of trouble before finally got done. What did you say in your letter to Marlon Brando when you were inviting him to play the part? I I think it was something like help. They'RE GONNA kill. We're GONNA kill me. They're gonNA cast things Donnington Danny Thomas's the well he well. He's GonNa buy paramount so we could play the role at that time. Paramount wasn't really worth that much. And then you communist was very richest television and I read an item. He who's GonNa buy paramount pictures so we could play the godfather so I scared me so much value brand though I knew some people who noon so you know I had an entree okay. And he gave me very good advice. He said no studio will hire me. Wait until you get a director and then talking to do. And he's quite right when I talked to the studio they swatting behind Randall. Okay Francis Ford Coppola. You're the director. I suppose Puzo Talk to you and you made it happened can. Can you pick up the story from there well It's true that Mario had always liked the idea of brand. At you know Mario was often bayshore. He was not really on the scene so much. Even a lot of my work with him was sending him drafts in him. Writing notes so Although he had posed the idea of of the Godfather being Brando I don't even know if he told me that Because I just was hit by a a whole bunch of ideas from the studio Danny Thomas was one Ernest Borgnine. It was a whole bunch of of ideas. Even Carlo Ponti was suggested and finally I I came down to the thing about the character of of That character was that you know you couldn't find anyone knew as we had done for all the other parts Alpa. Chino was totally unknown. Johnny Sal was bobby vowel Israel. He wants a lot of New People. Got Big parts but like a man who was supposed to be in sixty sixties couldn't be Lou and like had never been in anything before because what was he doing all those years so finally with my colleague and Casting Fed Reuss. We said well who the two greatest actors in the world so we said well Lonzo Livia and Marlon Brando. Each one had a the difficulty of for that part with Olivier was British. He was perfect. AG looked like he looked like One of the real guys Genovese Genovese And Brando was only forty seven years old. He was extremely handsome as always long flowing blond hair and most important important he had just been in some pictures. Notably one by the great but Pontecorvo called Burn That was a huge each flop tremendous financial flops. Oh the studio felt. That Brando was Supposedly difficult to work with Sort of irresponsible responsible you know would cause big delays. The film was only budgeted for two and a half million dollars. You have to understand. It wasn't like we put throw money around. And my decision decision to make it in the forties and have period cars and shoot in New York was already impacting the cost. That's one of the reasons why I was so unpopular but they also hated my Ki- my casting ideas they hated Al Pacino for the role of Michael and they hated Marlon Brando for the role role of Of of the of the Godfather and I was told categorically by the president of paramount's Francis says the president of paramount pictures I tell you here and now Marlon Brandin will never appear in this motion picture and I forbid you to bring it up again but you one. How did you win when he said I forbid you to bring it up again? I tamed that I just fell on the floor on the carpet. And like you know as if you know what and then I said what. Am I supposed to do if you tell me. I can't even discuss it. How can I be a director? If if if the part I think should be a cast that you wouldn't even let me talk about it and I said all right we'll we'll we'll tell you with the swipe one if he will do the movie for free to if he will put up with. He'll do a screen test and three. If you'll put up a million in dollar bond that he will in no way have any misbehavior. That causes the You know the overrun of the picture budget. Then you can do it so so I said I accept you know so at least they were saying if I did. Three things have a screen test if I could get him to do the movie for nothing and if I could Having put up a million dollars which is absurd But but at least I said I accept meaning. Okay now I can talk about it. So did he do the movie for free. No I called him up and I said to Marlon Marlon you know of course. This is an Italian American. You know. Wouldn't it be fun if we could like do a little experimental and kind of Improv and see what playing an Italian might be like. That was my way to talk to an actor essentially asking for a screen test. But I didn't put it in those ways and I knew that if I could do something with this little screen tests that was convincing the the absurd idea of him doing it for nothing. Although they didn't pay much more than nothing I think their pay scale which was an insult And obviously the putting up a bond onto prevent misbehavior. was you know. Sometimes you know you you you you you say you accept terms meaning that you just have a way to continue so the important thing was to do some sort of a little screen tests that I could get on tape and show till all these executives so you played this kind of little trick and he did he did Improv on. Or whatever on on on film for you what did he bring two that audition that he didn't realize wasn't always heard the rumor that Marlon Brando didn't like loud noises and he always wore things in his era. It took a couple of my colleagues from San Francisco from this period of you know having young filmmakers all Africa and I told them all to dress in black and no one was to speak speak with sign language so we descended on Marlins House early..

"Francis. First of all. Thanks so much for doing this for In downtown Toronto Right now at the Primetime Sports Management Conference before we start talking about hockey issues We just did a panel together and some of the questions I thought were interesting from the the audience including one reporter who is here from Seattle. That wanted to talk to you. How important is it for you to do events the likes of which you just did a couple of moments ago here why it's not just here? It's it's all over I mean You know I'm not based in Seattle as of yet I'll move out to the first half of next year but every time I'm in Seattle achieve a week every month the organization has at least one to three different events that we're doing. We're we're trying to get out in the public. We're trying to stay relevant because we don't play for two years so anything we can do to sort of keep. NHL Seattle in the public mind is positive for us so I think it's extremely important to get out and and and do these sort of events. What kinds of questions are the fans asking? What's the number one question you get from the hockey fans hockey media? What's it's the name and the second places as you have you moved here yet so but now it's been a cool process You start with a blank blank slate. You get to build everything from the ground up including name so You know we've got a real good team that's working on that trying to come down to the name. They want China design in a lower mark. That fits that you know and then you gotta figure out what your colors are going to be. There's a lot of things going into it. And once you get to that point you've gotTA trade market and that takes a little while too so hope for the first half after next year. We'll have that all behind us and moving forward you know. There's some GM's they only want to worry about hockey. They say hockey is big enough. And there's some guys who like no no I'd like to be involved in the business so since as you say. It's a blank slate. How involved are you in things like the name do you? Are you asked your opinion. You offer your opinion. How much do you involve yourself and things outside of hockey? Yeah it's been You know really interesting in Seattle working with a guy like toddler wacky reputation outstanding. He's it's been a lot of different organizations Had A lot of success around a couple of different leagues and He's got involved in everything you know I sit in meetings from construction arena to sail sweets to ticketing to marketing community services to naming rights And it's time consuming on one hand but I think it's it's it's extremely valuable because you get to work with all the different people in different departments within the organization you get the understand what the bigger picture is and what we're trying to accomplish here and you know time consume muses i. I really appreciate him. Giving me that opportunity to be a part of it. Does cracking have a chance. It'd be the Seattle crack and that was one of the ones on the on the fens list. I think it was in the talk five or something. So there's all those things on that list chance we'll see where it goes. Elliott Elliott wants to crack and I want sasquatch. Just because I think that logo of the picture picture of the SASQUATCH with the pose. I think would be fantastic. in the NHL is that on the list on the list. I think they had something like one. Hundred fifty thousand isn't responses and some of the names. I'm sure that was on the list. Someplace three astronauts good very good all their Seattle to me is fascinating because as everybody else. It's the lurch forward and everything is is about new in the NHL is constantly Reinventing itself whether it's on the ice with rules whether it's with the marketing when it comes to a place it's like Seattle as much as it's going to be team thirty two new franchise in the NHL. I mean the grips of history are still strong with that mean. Seattle does have have a rich and deep hockey tradition. Do you feel the tug in your chair. How much are we honoring Seattle's hockey past versus? How much are are we moving forward with a new organization? I think todd our ownership group has done a great job of you know respecting the history of making a part of it. brought one of the former players in an event early early. As you go through center we have kind of a tribute to the metropolitans and told them so. The first teams. I thought it was kind of weird when I got the job on the fences. Hey bring the Stanley Cup back to Seattle usually Stanley Cup. Yeah that's right. You want before right. So there is a huge attrition. There you look at all the junior hockey in the area too and when you look at what they accomplished in the twelve minutes you know getting The ten thousand season tickets is. I think it's going to be a tremendous franchise What they're doing they're man? How familiar with what the arena and stuff? It's incredible it's a big technological thing right like I understand that they wanna be state of the art in everything thing now. I don't know if you're one of those guys as VCR clicking twelve o'clock at your house or anything like that. I think I got rid of that. One I don't know how technologically really savvy. You are but you know what kinds of things are we going to see here. That are gonna be different that maybe we haven't seen before why you know I think just the first thing to make people understand just what they're doing They took the existing Keyarena and the roof is a historically landmark structure by the federal government. So so they kept the roof and literally everything else has gone so they ripped everything else underneath. They put these concrete things with steel beams to basically float that that roof and once that was in place they cut all the concrete and the right that was supporting it so that roof is now free floating. After that they started digging down sixty feet or seventy and if you don't both sides of where the floor was fifteen feet underneath floor was taking over six thousand cubic square feet of dirt every day out of the arena. They're gonNA double the underground space and four hundred thousand square feet. Eight hundred thousand square feet in building a brand new state of the art arena from the ground up. The existing roof will then sit on top of that new structure while the new HMO front who thinks of this stuff. I mean somebody obviously smarter than me. But it's it's an enormous project so part of that and and part of what being Seattle being such a tech savvy community as they wanna be he different right so part of our structure has a technology committee and their responsibility is to go out and explore and build different technologies. So that when our fans come to the Rena they're gonNa have have a fan experience unlike anywhere else in the world so You know I'm excited to see how it all plays out. And where we ended up with They certainly got some cool ideas. And it's exciting to be a part of that. Thank you mentioned. Bring the Stanley Cup back to Seattle. Is there any chance you do a banner raising on night. One that I don't know It's a good Eddie actually probably a discussion. I should have taught at some point but my guess is he's probably already thought of day one and the Stanley Cup banner goes up. Come on Jeff. A lot of your ideas are are terrible. That is a good idea. I gotTa say Mark All right tomorrow tomorrow. We could conference call with Todd. I'll bring that up. Have you done any mock drafts yet. Have you done anything like that. No we plan on doing our first. One in January will bring all their scouts in. And that'll be the first one will move forward from there. You Know I. I think everyone agrees what we're looking at today. And what we're looking at in June twenty one is GonNa be dramatically different but you know at this point trying to collect the data. We're trying to build what we want to have in in place in regards to our personnel on our technology platforms in different things. And we'll start that process but I think that's a key part of what we're doing. We'll do a lot of those in a lot. A lot of different ways of looking at them and make sure that we get to June of twenty one that we have a pretty good understanding more ready to go. You'll vegas was very aggressive on college players When are you allowed to start signing guys? Well we're not. I don't think we're recognized by the League until we make our last payment which is scheduled to be March or April of twenty one unsown K.. Similar would vegas you. Don't you don't have access to anything you don't get to go the GM meetings which are taking place today. But I'm here talking to you You know that's that's kind of the way it rolls out but something a little bit different than what Vegas did I believe. They had like eight players that they placed in the American Hockey League that year for depth our plan is an organization is to Rollo. Palm Springs the exact same year that we're rolling out the NHL teams. So you know you know when you draft eighteen year old kid from junior hockey. If he doesn't make your team you can't put them in Palm Springs. You got to send them back to the junior team in Canada so finding bodies that fit that fit underneath the NHL DHL's veteran rule. And and that squad is going to be a bit of a challenge so were looking everywhere. Obviously we got expansion draft amateur draft. We're looking for free agents whether it's in Europe whether it's in college whether it's junior guys whose contracts are up you know so we're we're looking a lot of different areas we think it's certainly plus when you look at Seattle and say to Washington. There's no state income tax rate now. So hopefully that entices a few guys to come in. And when you offer somebody to play in palm offspring's that's not a bad place to play either so I was gonna say like that. I had one h veterans. Say Are you sure they're going to palm springs and I go I think so and just like Um that's not too bad where new arena ten thousand seats in a practice facility attacks. Were starting that in January. So now you said you don't go to the GM meetings. Like I understand. But he ever say come on guys. Like I'm Ron Francis. I can come to this meeting and never say from your staff say that Talking Franchisee the dinner dinner reservation once in a while. I can't get in but that's about it. What was attractive to you about this position? Yeah well I I think initially just the fact that it's a blank slate and you get to the build it from the ground up sort of piqued my interest I flew out there and I spent some time with with toddler Keke and went through kind of what he was envisioning. We had a lunch. The second day I was out there and we had Most of the business staff there and went around the room and it'd be like Elliott two three minutes about who you are what you're doing and you're thinking in next person next personnel around the room and the vibe was incredible all like it was You know it was upbeat. It was positive that was laughter Everybody seemed to genuinely like each other and get along and I thought you know went home and said to me. I know they're trying to impress me but I think it was real like I think this was just something that was that special and I went back out a couple of weeks later because I had to get interviewed by about seven or eight of the different owners and and Ended up working out the deal and and taking it and when I went out for the press conference Totta Tuna barbecued his house. The next night we finished at about Eight thirty we got in the car driving back to tell. My kids are on the car and without any encouragement they said that. What a great group of people right and to me? That was exciting like the culture. We have there. I think todd's done a tremendous job. I get to create that on the hockey side. I get hopefully build the same kind of culture. Sure where everybody feels. They have a voice. They don't have any fear retribution or humiliation. They can tell me what they wanna tell me and and you know if we work together and get those kind of people that are good at what they do and and good people. I think we can have a lot of success and is daunting absolutely. There's so many things to do..

Thirty one thoughts department yeah expansion decision and was only made possible because Seattle will possess the three pillars essential to the success of any franchise terrific ethnic and committed ownership a thriving market and the state of the art venue new NHL. T- near Seattle won't begin play in the building behind me for another two years ears but the building of the hockey team itself began in earnest. Today the hiring of the most significant person in the hockey department the new general manager a team builder as a coach and a player in executive. And it's all Seattle. CEO Toddler wiki announced that raw tracks at any jail hall of fame the fifth all-time leading scorer in the NHL is is the team's first. General Managers Record is incredible. You know when I first met on Nevis of temptation asking for his autograph is record of captaining. Three teams winning the cup twice. He's the guy that just spent his entire life making. Everyone better is GonNa make me better. He's GonNa make better and I think someday we're gonNA bring the cup back to Seattle and so the entire vision. Direction of the Seattle franchise will stem from his thoughts and where he wants to take it so we have to not only pick the expansion draft. Pick the team who we like talk about. But he's got to develop an entire staff that means his front office assistant. GM salary cap guys. There's no part of that organization that he does not have to touch and the fact back then he's done just about every school. One of those jobs will help them appreciate the importance of it and also recognize what he wants in those positions pleased to be joined by Ron Francis Hall of Famer and the man tasked with putting together thirty second franchise in the NHL Ron on.

Lt One and I must have got that sucker going up to around one hundred and twenty miles an hour. Maybe maybe a hundred and thirty isn't that awesome was he on on their he he lon way you on the freeway you loved it and he said thanks for bringing me back to the glory days. He didn't feel like he he loved it. He loved the idea but then I saw him on it right. Okay yeah I mean I would just assume that that would cause. I mean he was just irreparable. Damage back a heart or kidney failure. Yes he had a little bit. Okay see that's it was worth it. You said it was worth the whole thing I mean. He was just risen around the grounds of the nursing home just the time of his life people. The people in charge of the facility got a little tight with me but I just said Hey. I'm Ron Burgundy yeah that was it yeah. That was your only. That was my only. What did they say. Please stop he said please stop and we're going to have to all the police and law enforcement did show up yeah so dillon Francis. What ways do you try to give back to the community. I mean I donate donate money to parks. La Trying to get more parks okay and then just parts of general dog parks just parks yeah just just making ensure. We have actual Blake because I've been we need open spaces yeah the UK. They have really nice parks in La.. Don't have and then I give a lot of musicares. It's just a music organization that for the arts and it actually exists yes. It's not it's not a fake. Charity runs been interested in creating charities joost's you should I would donate to well. It's called Spaghetti. Listen to that. It's just about more Spaghetti Spaghetti for people. We don't have to get into it. I actually I actually thought he'd the elderly more Spaghetti Yeah. I mean if they don't know if they necessarily really need more spaghetti. I feel like if you do it to for homeless. People though that's fantastic will maybe that's what would you maybe that's idea. After we take a little bit off the top yeah now do do you have grandparents. Yes and they must be awfully proud of what you've accomplished. Yeah my grandma is and what do they make of your your music. Sh- I mean she definitely if I played it for her. She wouldn't know it was mine music. Oh and she would probably be like. I don't want to hear this but she's proud so they they enjoy it. Talk or Donald Think so okay. Maybe some of them. There's there's probably a good you know maybe two that. I could play her that she would be fine with what I mean. What ah portion of fandom do you think you have in the elderly community. Oh Man I mean I could look at my analytics on twitter or instagram and I would be an interesting study. I look let's look right now. Let's look right now. Let's see how many octogenarians you have who consider themselves fans. Let's see who love have to get down to the beats so it's you can access yeah listening right now fifty five sixty four yeah. We got one percent. Okay okay sixty five plus. Guess what one percent so one percent. These are the real one percenters octogenarians love a little hill in DM while they're doing water aerobics at the pool. Yeah thanks so then thank you S. H. Rate Yeah. What do you think that means. SMH surely must help is what I always thought it meant. It means shake my head but oh okay schick. Why would you wanNA shake your headache SMA Komo. Am I right big time Smith Yeah. Let's talk about cholesterol medication. Okay lipitor good for controlling cholesterol levels or should people change their diets as well. I I I legally am not allowed to comment because the last time I did right. I got in trouble okay so I don't know the specifics of car to be able to to commonsense is put down the cheeseburger bigger. Yes or pick up the litter. Yes yeah. That's both some people need but Ludo knows I'm. I don't know what the right answer is Dr. If you're listening we're not doctored about molly you ever take that stuff and when I was younger should senior citizens take ecstasy now. MD coming don't think so. It's pretty rough on your system yeah but it's interesting. I wonder if you're one percenters. If they're just bragging the molly train all day long they they could be what do you think about this. I just thought of this idea so forgive me if it's not fleshed out about a DJ school for Senior Citizens would that be something you'd be interested in setting up just get a bunch of octogenarians in a room teach them about beat matching cross Asfandyar curve control. Get some loops going make some beats that honestly sounds like my own personal uploaded to soundcloud. Don't non interested not run run. Where did you learn those words. How do you know so much about. Dj Technique we'll Carolina. You don't know everything about me. Okay when I was doing Cable News in New York City in the the eighty s actually befriended grandmaster flash for a period of time and he showed me a couple of things on the ones and twos and it's nothing like like what Dylan can do here but but though flash I did put out a single around one thousand nine hundred eighty three called news funk two thousand quite serious serious. Can we hear I thought you'd never ask. Dj Dillon Francis Thank you didn't ask me. I don't even know Nick. Do you have news funk today in nick. You always have two thousand loaded up ready to go all right. Let's take okay. Let's take a ride here. It is from nine hundred thirty news one two thousand Bra Bra Bra Bra Yeah Perm's. The last three to blast to to say wow was that not that was interesting. It never made it on the radio you except for a couple of college she yeah yeah. I was called news funk two thousand yeah. It's not very newsy yeah. I think think it was anything like the two thousand I think we were trying to predict what the two thousand sound was gonna be like and wasn't that wasn't this very often guard of you but the drum machine was cool right. That's the best I wish you. Why are you laughing so much. It's maybe it's flattering it. Is I feel like I never want to play it again. No emotions good absolute there. You go that absolutely. Louis is the way to take that okay well. I feel like you guys are making fun of me. Whatever I have enough self esteem to know that Ron you can do whatever you in two thousand you took a Chanson. That's what life is all about exactly. You took an artistic and went. I'm not going to be made to feel no wow I went somewhere. It went directly. Thank you in fact that was one of the reviews of news funk two thousand it went. This song went somewhere it. Did this college. Newspapers said well it went somewhere. What were some of the other if you could name out very negative very okay very negative. I'm sorry let me ask you this. Do you meditate. I used to break and then while I was was when I was younger and then my dad made me wow okay which is really counterproductive to meditating right. Why would you make someone four school meditation so he's like son for the last time yeah you got it was it's six o'clock meditation time. Saturday exactly like I just got flashbacks Flashbacks Dylan for Christ's sake. Did you meditate. was that kind of the banter that was it wow so so. You never felt relax. It's no no the reason we had to meditate was we. It was so that we could watch TV. It was a trade off. It was a trade off medicine. How long was was the meditation. Periods posters like an hour an hour yeah lot of breathing exercise now. I'm on your side. Maybe fifteen minutes. My Dad's still wakes up every morning. Did you find it helped you so much or were you. Just it was too much. I'm as a little kid. Your mind is going exactly. I mean my mind is going Milem at right. Now I try to meditate every morning and I can't immediately. I started thinking about eight vile the movie eight Mile and how we have to save the people from the nuclear reactor Meltdown Three Mile Island. That's not what the movie was about though Gosh. I wish we could watch it right now to have this debate. It's not I guess we're GONNA have to agree to disagree. It's not what the movie's about though even well anyway when I meditate. That's those are the images the component important through my mind. It's like a carnival of horrors in my brain. No matter what I do that is depressing. So so what do you do now to relax ax your mind and in clear your head because I'm sure you have a hectic schedule. I take you know take naps or something like that and I I enjoy working. I'm very thankful handful. I you wake up and you just like boom. I've got a new beat a new rhythm a new a new song in my head. It's either that or like video ideas for. I like music videos. The visual expression of what you've already done yes gotcha but yeah it's like that or it's just sitting down in front of the computer and then kind of just just chipping away at whatever I imagine you travel a lot for your work. Yes how many how many dates a year are you on the road probably like a hundred and forty forty something hundred fifty something pretty extensive yeah lot of traveling a lot of traveling back to the elderly speaking of traveling and though I work with the elderly sometimes I do kind of resent the fact that they're able to get on a plane before me just because they're old a need special assistance. You know especially when I'm flying first class as I'm sure you do all the time. don't you think first class passengers and elderly people should be able to peacefully board an airplane at the same time and don't they I mean Ron has pushed me over when we've boarded a plant the same time I mean I'll help an old lady. Eighty put her bag in the overhead yes compartment but but I'm GONNA put my bag up. I you know it's understandable. I'll help the old bag of bones. Imagine you do do the same thing. I think I would put her bag. I not mine. Chivalry is not dead last time. We're GONNA play together. You kicked me in the back of the knees and said go faster. You're because you were so slow. Do you remember how I got all the passengers to chant hurry up Carolina Hurry Korea care. It was crazy. It was hilarious I would've I would've loved to see that I'm sorry to interrupt. I just the elderly. I have no idea what we're trying to do here. At this episode we have great guests with a fascinating career and you're just kind of like shoehorning this vague India about helping the elderly. I'm bringing my journalistic point of view and that's what people tune in for you know. There's at least six or seven shows where people just ask the same same old boring question. This is the Ron Burgundy podcast. The audience is paying top dollar for the show and they expect something more. We're not well. People get the show for free. It doesn't cost anything to download. Wait what that's a huge mistake. We should fix that immediately with you. Bring your journalistic point of view. You're also talking about hooking up corvette engines into the wheelchairs. Yes I am old people and I think you're you're suggesting giving molly to senior party. Dope just back me up here Dylan Ellen. I agree what you're saying. You're responsible and possibly a little. I think what you're saying is a real snooze. Okay and my new best friend Dillon Francis agrees. I mean honestly if I was an old person. I probably doing a bunch of molly. We here's the thing we have so much to learn from people who are older than us. I think we can all agree on that right yeah but it's also important to listen to young voices as well. You're young fellow your voice is valid and I want you to know that so Dylan Dylan. If you use your voice right now say whatever you want even if it's gibberish put on the spot really there there you go. That's it put on the spot on the spot. Really good nailed it right. It's important. That's important to say that and get that out of there. Yeah I would have said she yeah. I didn't want to offer you achieve. I I. I mean honestly what I said is not even I I mean it's probably on the same on par with with that gibberish because it didn't do anything no no no no no no that your words have power though I just I was was put on the spot. I thought it was pure. Poetry thank you. You could weave that into a song essentially being I liked it with a lower town to stay. Put on us by the details ability to deter other spot on the spot the spot her. You're asking the airplane. You're backing up the line. Eh that doesn't care line with your eight steamer drunks. No those are yours phoenix. They are mind but it's part of your job description description..

"Pretty oh. She. Get this. They waited at the same weight, but how much weight did Francis. Put on after the freaking wait cut to make the heavyweight. Limit is the question. Fifteen five twenty. I dislike. Put on his name is Francis. I don't know why. I think Dominic speaking of stoppages, I have to ask your opinion because you know, it's it's your division air, and you have a win over TJ. What did you think of that stoppage with T J dillashaw rivers? We should Ruto. I thought that. I mean, I guess you. I I mean, I'm never opposed to letting teach it does get more of an ass whipping. So I would I was okay with that. But it was more about the fact of you know, him complaining about it. What if you wanna know what I think it comes down to this did the rest, stop it? Yes. Or no. Yes. Can t day? Do anything about it from that point on say it again? Is there anything TJ can do about it from that point on what do about anybody? Like the decision. Not the decision. No stop in that ship and sail, my friend, right? So that's my point. I look at this. And I say this how insignificantly stupid you are is to think that you complaining and whining about stoppage is going to change anything. It's like you just sound like a moron nothing is gonna change. So you might as well just accept what just happened to you. And try to grab a hold of your balls instead of run from them and admit the law because you just got knocked out by twenty five or and you drop down to a weight class that dried out your brain. And you might not have been as durable as you are at one thirty five. There's a reason I never cut to one twenty five, and it's not because I couldn't make it because I knew that at that level your brain with the weight that I cut it's dried out, and you can't take your not as durable a huge part of cutting weight and fighting..

"And now identity, the demand for dignity and the politics of resentment. Francis Fukuyama welcome to the economists asks very much. So let's get the big one out of the way I what do you mean by identity? Politics are density is this idea that we have an inner self that's not adequately recognized that is not a court in the dignity that we feel it deserves and it's political because the recognition has to be public by public authorities by other actors in society, and the way it's developed in the modern world, it actually tends to focus on group characteristics like our ethnishity or race or gender. Or our nationhood, and that's the way that politics has been drifting away from the twentieth century model where the divisions tend to be more over economic policy issues. And why do we think that happened? A lot of people did think liberal democracy had won. The argument was some nuances as the years went by after the euphoria. I cover the full of the Berlin Wall in few years later, it felt a bit more question, but this is a most seismic shift. What's happened? Well, there's a couple of things. So obviously there's an economic component to it. I think a lot of people have recognized globalization had very divergent effects on the working class compared to people with good educations ladder did well, and the former really fell off a cliff. But there's also I think just a human psychological phenomenon that you know you want to be recognized as a as a human being. If you live in an authoritarian, government has the peoples of eastern Europe did during the Cold War. War. Once you're liberated from that in a way you take for granted the fact that you're living in a democracy and then you want other things. You know, the EU bureaucracy begins to bother you or immigrants or other kinds of issues where you don't want recognition as generic human being. You want recognition as a member of the particular group, and particularly if your group of feels that it's been marginalized or disregarded in some sense, I think that drives a lot of the passion in contemporary politics. Well, let me turn the question straight back to you. Tell me what your identity is. That's a, it's an interesting question. My grandfather immigrated to the United States and nineteen o five from Japan growing up. I never thought of myself actually as an Asian American or Japanese American because you know, I felt that in America, you didn't actually Ty Americanise to particular ethnic group. And so I just said, I'm an American that began to change in American culture, beginning in the sixties and seventies. When ethnic consciousness became more trendy and people wanted to hold onto these particular ethnic identities. And since then it's really, I think, come to dominate in a way the way that Americans think about themselves new way you think about yourself, we'll no. No. So I, you know, I never really felt that my particular ethnic background was relevant to, you know what I wanted to think about or or do. And so I to this day, I really don't think in those categories identity politics do seem to correlate with strains on liberalism. To what extent they arise from liberalism itself, or perhaps the gaps in liberties when it comes to lived experience. People increasingly believe that the way they're born that is to say these biological characteristics having to do with race, ethnicity, gender, gender orientation should determine the way they think about politics and they. Also want recognition not for themselves in this classical liberal sense of I'm an an individual human being, an autonomous human being. Rather they want recognition of me as a member of the particular group. And this involves a big contradiction in a certain sense because sometimes the group identity really contradicts the individual identity, and that's, I think the kind of problem were wrestling with right now. I can see that that's functionally the case, but is that something inherently wrong, philosophically wrong with identity politics?.

"These kinds of scenes bringing the life of saint francis of assisi to some visualization when i was watching it i imagined that you would take these from some old black and white silent movie that i didn't know of but i give come to learn that you shot them yourself that was a little bit the attention intention i didn't want to draw anybody's attention to think that we shot it and i wish i could have find this kind of footage enemies of the mother's about a dozen films films on sin francis silent this willis fifties bedroom cellini the most beautiful one of them others in momodern films in realize none of these films would be helped me to sort of condensed form tried to convey what the name of saint francis meant in the catholic church but also for humanity it meant a lot to me when i was a little boy he was the only sane that sort of put a name to i knew what he stood for he talked to the birds in ecoed all animals brothers and sisters knife that really that when he got my imagination so in a way i knew what this name stood for nieve when pope francis was first introduced on that on that night unseen pitas square i was you were alert to it i was excited i was excited before we even for you knew you'd be making film out of long way before that and before we even saw him we heard the new pope whose name to anything to me at that moment but we heard he was calling himself francis that i thought was exciting i was really he had my tension before we have sawn because that was daring it took guts to take on that name at it meant.

"It just it it had no teeth like it felt like an extended sixty minutes piece jet were absolutely i'm just interviewing the pope and he's telling me about his own personal theology why being poor is bad in about well if they feel about homosexuality in charge and how we feel but here's my take on it and that a new thing and that was one aspects that i liked is because one of the things that pope francis has been getting under fire about it is his somewhat progressive liberal views so he talks about it but not these this is why we need to accept homosexual people and this is what i'm doing to do that it is my believe homosexuals should be welcomed in the church and blah blah as long as they're on their own faithbased journey there people of god blah blah but nut i believe this and this is a conclave i've put together that is working at no he just talks about it so i mean that was kinda rough this movie did give me the feels in quite a few parts mainly because i grew up as a catholic boy and so that is going to kind of get me right there but also some of it all the reenactments of of the other no i'm not there yet so parts of it took place in italy and i have been to that exact place where they were in assisi in italy in this tiny little church and had an incredible emotional experience while i was there but one thing that this film does that i do not use this word lightly i hated hated hated hated these reenactment things that they did where it was basically when it would talk about saint francis not pope francis but saint francis and where he came from it went into a black and white reenactment with actors would by itself okay sure kind of weird but not only did it do that as we were watching this black and white reenactment it has like that kind of staggered black and white film look from a film when you look at like nineteen twenties and thirties when the film was kind of you can basically see the film.

"Documentaries it is just something that i find fascinating because you know getting these little insight into people and places and really diving into it this documentary that we saw pope francis when tim and i came out of this one of the first words you know that i was saying we will not go into the way the dc mayor would describe this movie at least not on this podcast but this is just a fluff piece this documentary it talks about pope francis and what the and the activism he is doing now and the global ambassadorship that he is doing but for me pope francis is an incredible person as far as like what the what stories he could tell talking about the first pope from the southern or from the south american continent i mean he chose the name of a jesuit i mean or rather he is jeffrey chose the name of of francis from saint francis there's so many compelling aspects to who he is and all this and what a lot of this film focused on was what he does not who he is so like it opens with a thirteen i'm gonna stop you greg for a second okay it doesn't really focus on what he does it he talks about what he does talks about what he does end where he goes yeah it is really focused on that was my problem yeah folks because that's a way more interesting film if they're like here we do what we do a international day of prayer and this is why we do it and this is who comes here and this is why this is important that is like we do a national day of prayer and then we move onto the next conversation yeah yeah and it starts with the speech that he gave in nineteen ninety nine i mean almost a decade before he became pope and it was in brazil and he is talking about just the lessons and like i want more of that like why is this a pope francis documentary and we get like one clip of him in his younger years and not the stuff that he has been doing the past two years like this is a documentary where is that documentary feel and this.
