"It wasn't Venus. So thank you very much. And all those stepping away from the court by some of the sport's greatest stars is intensifying discussion here in the U.S. about the new up and coming players, including the young Francis TFO, who made it to the men's semifinals before losing to Carlos alcaraz. I'm going to come back and I will win this thing one day. I'm sorry, guys. TFO is the first black American to reach the semifinals since tennis great. Arthur Ashe did that more than 50 years ago. And tennis star and ESPN commentator, Patrick Mack, and roe, says they're just some amazing stories behind some of the younger players who will infuse new energy in the sport. And here he is with Bloomberg's Kathleen Hayes. Let's listen in. Francis giacomo store is an incredible one. It's like an American fairytale, really, with his parents coming from Sierra Leone, his mom working two jobs as a nurse. His dad being the head of maintenance at a tennis facility, and that's how Francis and his twin brother happened to get into tennis. Just amazing, but also these guys play with so much with athleticism, style. And they love it. And the crowds love them. Well, I was fortunate enough to be in Arthur Ashe. When tiafoe beat Nadal, that was quite a moment for a lot of people. Not only the thrill of seeing this young man that we've been watching just his acceleration in his development as a tennis player, right? And also for people kind of there in nostalgia about seeing Rafa Nadal, who's not done yet, present presumably, but see him lose not even get to the finals. I mean, it was a great performance by Francis and even though Nadal was at his absolute best. It was still pretty darn good. And tiafoe had a really play well and finish him off because the Dow is not going to give anything away. And remember Rafa hadn't lost a match in a major all year, he won the first two majors of the year in Australia and at the French Open. And then had to withdraw before his semifinal with Nick curios at Wimbledon because of the stomach injury. So because of the stomach injury all summer that he was nursing, he wasn't really at a 100%. But again, that being said, he's still Rafa. You still got to finish him off. And tiafoe did that. And then he came back to be the very tough Andrei Rublev this Russian in the quarterfinals to make his move into the semifinals. Oh, yeah. He's a dynamo for sure. So it is part of this new era about race losing Serena gaining TFO. Is the new era about tennis also spreading to more different kinds of people in the U.S. and globally. Well, definitely has done that on the women's side. I mean, you've saw the Serena and Venus effect with lots of young African American women who are now not that young, but you've obviously got the youngest one and coco Goff when you've had Madison keys and Sloane Stephens. And countless others. So I've seen a change even in the last ten years attending a lot of junior tennis tournaments as I do with even in our tennis academy at Randall's island here, the McEnroe tennis academy. So I've seen the impact from all backgrounds of particularly young girls. And I hope that tiafoe will have some impact on young boys because I still think at least in the United States it's not as popular in the African American community. Tennis, it is for women. I think mostly because of Venus and Serena and also because in professional women's tennis, you can make a lot of money. So that attracts more people of all different backgrounds to the sport, whereas tennis for guys for young boys is not at the top of the list. But worldwide, you're actually right. I mean, players coming from all over the world is just amazing. The popularity of tennis has grown in other parts of the world. Especially in the last 20 years, which is why in some ways, the U.S., I think, fell behind in creating and helping develop top players. But it's good to see that that's the women's side. We're doing very well. And on the men's side, we're starting to see an impact of tiafoe, Taylor Fritz, Tommy Paul, Opel, brooksby, corda. We've got a good group of good, really good young American men, but TFO definitely has the most charismatic of all those players. I think the first one now to get through to a major semifinal. We'll ask a couple other questions looking ahead, for example, will someone not named Nadal when the French Open in 2023? That's a great question, Kathleen. Some of it depends on the health of Nadal. He did look a little bit slower, which he actually admitted in his post match press conference. I'm going to say yes. I'm going to say yes, someone will. I mean, it's got to happen at some point, right? I mean, I think with alcaraz's development, Casper Ruud, who's great play core player, got to the finals last year, losing to Nadal. He would be a guy. And sinner, sinner, who lost to alcaraz can play on clay as well. So I think the younger generation, not only are they coming, Kathleen, they're here. They're here and I think that's sinner alcaraz match was really, to me, a generational shift in the way the game is played. The speed and the tempo that the match was played at was something I haven't seen before quite honestly. So whether the one of those guys or someone else can put that together in a major at the French Open if the Dell's healthy will be something to see next year and certainly be something to look for. How about Novak Djokovic? He's in great shape. He wants to play he wanted to play in this open and he couldn't. So what are his prospects looking like to you? I think his prospects are great. I mean, obviously it's been rough for him because of his decision not to be vaccinated to play a lot of tournaments. He hasn't been able to come to the U.S. and he's missed a lot of big events, obviously missed the Australian open. Those are two tournaments where he'd be the favorite at. But I think yes, he's still quick enough and nimble enough that he could play with these young guys, but I don't think for that much longer. I mean, that's how good I think this new players are. So, you know, I give them another one to three years, probably where if he can stay healthy and motivated and get into countries. And helping them that he's not able to play that many tournaments. But again, he knew what he was doing when he made a decision to not get back to he's the only tennis player at least in the top ranking to the world that made that decision. But from a tenant standpoint, there's no doubt that he can still play at this level for a couple more years. So another looking ahead question. Serena's retiring so we can

"Joining us now for more analysis on the economy is silver dania. Daniel, who is the head of European economics research at Barclays as you factor in then the fiscal response from countries like Germany and others to this evolving crisis, how does that play into your views on the trajectory for the Eurozone economy is a recession now unavoidable? Yes, we actually had a recession forecasting many months, even before this news that we had on Friday from gas from. We are now obviously expecting that the recession will be deeper and will be more prolonged. Because these additional cuts from tasks will have to be compensated with some decline in economic activity. So sadly, we have the ECB decision on Thursday. We were speaking to BlackRock earlier in the show. It's their expectation that the ECB that they will go 75 basis points. Do you share that view? Can they go? That far. We think exactly the same. We have a 75 basis point forecaster for this meeting. We decided it's a close call, but the fact that we are starting a very low level and 75 basis point will still imply that policy stands is in the accommodative region regime. Make us think that the margin 75 is more likely than 50. Global news, 24 hours a day on air and on Bloomberg quicktake, powered by more than 2700 journalists and analysts in more than a 120 countries. I'm Michael Barr and this is Bloomberg, Nathan. Okay, Michael, thanks 6 19 on Wall Street live from the Bloomberg interactive broker studios. This is Bloomberg daybreak. Let's get more now on our top story this morning. The changing of the guard in the UK outgoing prime minister Boris Johnson is just arrived in Scotland to formally hand his resignation to the queen. Johnson's successor Liz truss is apparently already making plans to address her country's cost of living crisis. Let's get the latest now live from number 10 Downing Street Bloomberg's Lizzie burden is there and has more for us. Lizzie, good morning. Sounds like we got vintage Boris on his way out. What did you take from the outgoing prime minister's farewell? It really was a classic from Boris Johnson. He offered nothing but his fervent support to Liz trust. He said he was not planning to be a backseat driver. Remember, that's what statue was to John Major for now, but he did classically refer to Natasha that successful Roman general who I had to look this up, retired, made a comeback, and then returned to his plow. So the question is whether Johnson was dropping a hint that he might have a return to frontline politics at some rate along the line if he makes a lot of money on the speaker circuit and then tries to return like his hero Winston Churchill to politics. He also had a bit of a dig at the MPs who ousted him. He said the back on will be handed over in what has unexpectedly turned out to be a relay race, but the rules changed halfway through. So he does seem to be somewhat rewriting history because remember what ousted him was the scandal after scandal that led those MPs to resign. So about two weeks ago, the Bloomberg noted that the U.S. cannabis market size expected to reach 40 billion by 2030 and expected to expand at a compound annual growth rate of nearly 15% over that time. That's a new report Tim that's app by grand view research, growth driven, at least this report said by increased legalization. Okay, so with this increased legalization, how are people who are using cannabis using it? Well, cure leaf just got some new data. They did this survey with Harris poll and it found that 91% of adults who are over the age of 21 who have ever consumed cannabis, they've actually done so for health and wellness purposes, Carol, as opposed to, well, you know, recreational, I would suppose. All right, so let's get to our guests with us. Is station woodcock? She is clinical cannabis pharmacist a curely joining us via Zoom in New York City. So tell us a little bit more about how people are using it because we do see growth in the industry. So tell us a bit more though about specifically where people are using it and for what reasons. Yeah, you know, I think this survey really helped clear up a lot of the stigma surrounding cannabis. People think that it's for escapism, for fun recreational purposes. But what we're really seeing is that by and large, the people that are consuming cannabis are doing so for help and wellness, it's for stress. It's for anxiety. It's for sleep. And the bigger takeaway is that over half of these people are using cannabis instead of pharmaceuticals. And I think one thing the COVID-19 pandemic did was sort of shift people towards more natural homeopathic sort of remedies and cannabis falls into that for a lot of people. How are they using it? Not what are they using it for? How are they using it? Are they eating edibles? Are they smoking it or are they? Yeah. I mean, I think that's the most fascinating fascinating thing about it. People think cannabis, they think smoking, smoking is actually bad for you, no matter what it is. So we see a lot of vaporization. And I think that's a good opportunity to remind people that we're talking about legal regulated products. So these are products that are sold through legal state markets. They're tested. They don't have pesticides. They don't have contaminants. There's nothing else in these vaporized products other than pure cannabis oil. And the terpenes found within the plant. That's really important because illicit market products are not regulated that way. We're seeing a lot of contaminated products. So these regulated products are much safer for people to consume, but we're also seeing the pharmaceutical industry technology brought into cannabis. So if you think of a traditional cannabis edible that takes like an hour to kick in and can last for 8 hours, we can change that with nano formulation that makes cannabis easier to be absorbed by the body so you can consume it in a beverage in a gummy formation. It's gonna work in like 15 minutes and only last for an hour or two. So people can really customize the products that they're using to the symptoms that they're looking for if you want to sleep all night. You can use something that's going to last all night. If you just need something for anxiety or stress right now, we have products for that too. So the versatility of the products really determines sort of what you're using them for. So tell me though, stasia, who should be using it because when you say homeopathic and I know there's been a lot moving forward in terms of greater oversight of homeopathic remedies. But I mean, I want transparency. I want to know what I'm kind of getting into. Yeah, absolutely. I think one of the things that we see a lot are people that are comfortable with the idea of cannabis for cancer, for multiple sclerosis, for Parkinson's disease. Like these really severe disease states. And there's a lack of understanding that it actually can be utilized for things like arthritis, or menstrual cramps for migraines, for stress for anxiety. I mean, we have patients and consumers coming in all the time for much simpler symptoms. And even more importantly, not all cannabis causes euphoria. I think that's also a huge misunderstanding that if you use cannabis, you're going to be stoned. That's absolutely not the case. The products come in a lot of different formulations, doses, ratios. So we can really customize what you're getting and how it's going to affect you for your lifestyle. But I guess what I wanted to go back to is remind me where we are in terms of FDA oversight of all of this. Yeah, there is no FDA oversight right now. It's all state by state regulated, but that's where that regulation comes into place. So the testing, the formulations, all of that is essentially pharmaceutical grade. Even without FDA oversight. Do we get to a point where there is that FDA oversight or we get to a point where, you know, I'm actually going to my primary care physician and she or he is recommending that I go to the pharmacy and pick up some cannabis, not going to a dispensary. Exactly. Yeah, I mean, that would require federal legalization and that's something I think the industry is definitely moving toward because access is huge. Like right now, someone who is a patient in New York say they can't travel to a different state legally with their medicine. And that's a problem. So we need that accessibility to open up. For people to be able to consume and have whatever they're using it for, to be able to cross state lines, have consistent product. You know, that's also something we're moving toward, but I think removing the stigma and seeing what people are using it for is a huge step in that direction. That stasia woodcock she's clinical cannabis pharmacist over a curate leaf. You're listening to Bloomberg businessweek, coming up, can you really, really get a stake by Bobby Flay from a food truck? "Interesting episode, a lot of action this week in tennis with the next gen finals, which although it is an alternative format with four game short sets, sideline coaching on the men's tour, which we rarely see. The results from tournaments like this have proven to be dependable indicators of what's to come. We saw Sasha's Vera make his name here. We saw Rublev make a name here. We saw center make a name here. And within two years time, these boys are in the top ten. So let's not take the results from this lightly. Let's continue to view it as an indicator, and I'm interested to see which one of these young guns emerges. Ultimately, we saw alcaraz be said quarter in the final. Will this be his breakthrough? Will he be the first of that pack to get top 25 in the world? Well, stay tuned and see. Last week, we also saw Alison risk, doing what she does. Stand out there on the road, sneaking in a way and at the end of the year and lands when everybody else is at home. We saw TP, Tommy Paul, with a real good win over Francis TFO. Francis probably knows he let one get away there. And ultimately went on to hold the title on Stockholm. Always a good win at the end of the year right there. And then some jaw dropping news on the WTA side. Paying Schwartz comes out talks about sexual misconduct allegations of Chinese delicate. Whenever we hear that on a woman's door, number one, we get concerned. Number two, we are shocked. So it's going to be interesting to see how that one unfolds. I want to intro our first guest. Brandon nakashima, California NATO, be not. A kid that I saw play number four at UVA when they were in Chicago practicing. And even if playing number four, I was like, that dude can ball. We're gonna learn about his journey. What makes him tech? And what was his first big purchase? He said some good wins. It's made two of you finals. He got nothing his bag now to make a few purchases. So let's see what he did. What's up, B? What's up? How are you doing? Good man. Good, you look good out there. Thanks, thanks. So when I met you last summer, you had less than a thousand Instagram followers. Now you got 11,000. Yeah. How is life change for you? Yeah, it's definitely changed a lot. You know, since a year over a year ago, you know, I think everything has changed, really. Kind of both on and off the court, especially with my game. And also, you know, just kind of the lifestyle off the court with the professional life here. Okay. I'm never going to detail because that's private. We can have that offline conversation. So, you know, I look at you and I look at like Jim Brady. And you didn't even play number one for UVA before leaving college. And now you're in the next gen finals. How do you explain that transition from not playing number one on your college team to now being one of the best up and coming stars on the ATP tour? Yeah, I think you know in the juniors, I kind of always knew that I had the game to turn professional at some point. And you know, maybe in college, you know, it's just kind of a different experience. With the format and the matches there. So maybe I was feeling a little bit uncomfortable at the beginning or took a while for me to kind of get my bearings there and you know, we had such a great great team there so, you know, all the matches were at a high level and you know, if you're playing one or two in college ten is, I mean, you're pretty much playing all the top guys in college tennis. So I think the transition from college to professional has been pretty smooth so far. You know, after I decided to turn professional I quickly got some results on the ATP tour and started doing well on a bunch of challenges. So from there the ranking has just been improving and just trying to develop my game as much as possible on the court. So I was commentating for tennis channel during the Atlanta tournament. And I don't know if you heard. I bet on you versus big John Isner. Now that you have been on tour for a year or almost 18 months and had, you know, some some success been in like two or three finals now. What is your perspective on the game now? You know, when I watched that match against the big server like that, it was going to come down to one or two points at the end. I wanted to, will you stay down on the forehand ride or something like that? What is your perspective now on the difference in those matches? 'cause you're competing with all of them out grand Isner, et cetera. You beat it isn't there in Acapulco, right? So what is your what do you think the game is about now versus what you used to think it was about when you were in college? Yeah. You know, I think at the professional level, I mean, all the guys in the top hundred or even top 200, I think are super solid from the baseline, you know? And, you know, most of the matches it just comes down to a few points, like you said. You know, kind of who's better, better mentally in those critical points. So, you know, sometimes it works out to your advantage and sometimes it does it, but you know, those in those moments you just try to learn from as much as possible and just try to gain experience from those moments to help you in the future when you're playing out this. When you're playing out here, like on the biggest stages. So what do you think has been the biggest reason for your progression? Like, when I looked at, you know, team tennis, I looked at when Sloan played team tennis in 2017, she went on to win the U.S. open. We look at Jim Brady played team tennis last year and went on to the semis of a Grand Slam a U.S. open. What do you think has been, I mean, dusan's been by your side, literally by your side, right? 24 7. In the same hotel room, making you hit volleys across the bed, right? You know, so what do you think has been the biggest sort of reason for your in my opinion rapid success, rapid Ascension into? Yeah, I mean, it's tough to tough to pick one certain thing that's kind of been kind of key factor in the progression here. You know, I think it's just the mentality. I think, especially when I turn right off the bat, what I turned pro, you know, just knowing that I'm going to have some good and bad matches out there and sometimes the travel is going to be tough, but you know, just try to take every opportunity as best as possible out there and just try to learn from learn from different experiences. When you're out there competing, I think is key. So and then, you know, also the also always try to improve mindset when you're on the practice core. I think it's pretty key to feel more confident and comfortable in these matches. All right, so I've got two more questions. Lighthearted questions..
