"Today we also lost Francis tiafoe at the hands of Karen heschel, another well, not another a comeback, but not all the way back. We had these two matches happening in tandem, Francis tiafoe, against Karen hashem of on the John Cain arena and Denis Shapovalov against Hubert her catch on the second court and it was incredible the way they were tracking one another. Tiafoe and Shapovalov, I suppose tiafoe were heavier favorite than Shapovalov and actually maybe that's twisting the narrative too far. Perhaps you but her catch who we are always guilty of sort of underrating and underplaying. He probably was the favorite in that match on paper, but they both go two sets to love down and yet you always feel like this isn't over. Something's gonna happen here. Maybe these guys were watching Andy Murray last night and know what's possible and lo and behold they both start the long trudge the long long drudge back to competitiveness and they didn't quite finish it the same stage. Did make it into a fissure. TFO had 6 set points to take it into a 5th. He was 6 one. In the fourth set tiebreak, how did he lose it? Well, we were, in fact, I had a tweet prepared on the podcast account to say electric tennis from tiafoe. He's found his U.S. open tiebreak form. And of course he won so many tiebreaks in that tournament. I think a record breaking number. He was 6 one up. He was, he was playing fantastically, and then there were some cheap errors in there for sure from that position. It was almost like he had too much of a lead. He got a little bit casual and hacked wrestled it from him. I mean, he shows up at slams and he's so sort of powerful from the baseline and just well, I feel like I can't really say that because that's just that's just your word. It's David's word. Yeah, it's both of your words. It fits. It does. Without being sort of he's not showing off it, is he? He's not on foot of it with his shirt off, celebration. But he's just low key, incredibly straight. It's very stammering alike, isn't it? Strength and fitness, you know, getting stronger as the match goes on seemingly in that tallies with his career because it feels like outside of the slams, he barely registers registers on the radar really these days and know we want Paris. And obviously he's had the odd result, but he very rarely factors in. But comes alive, Islam. I think he's trying to get the most out of himself. And that's the slams is where you want to do that. Look, he is limited. He has a limitation on him. I don't think he's going to become a significantly better player than he always was, but he can beat people who probably have a higher ceiling, and he's done it. I mean, he got a bit lucky against Jack Draper at the U.S. open, but he's done it against Cameron norrie. I've seen him do it against a few players and really know tiafoe's thinking and we're thinking TFO is going to be going deep in this tournament and he's just a horrible roadblock to a player like that unless TFO's absolutely on it all the way through and he what he was too slow out of the blocks. He was, but he was absolutely on it in that tiebreak. He was astonishing in the tie break 6 one, the crowd were high on fire. It was like he was Ozzy. They were already blocking out their calendars for the 5th set, you know, canceling whatever they had on. It was just a given, you know, Francis TFO was in. He did he did his, you know, he does that charismatic, confident nod towards his team. What are you stressing about? I've got this. This is fine. And I trusted him and believed him. I thought he was such a banker this tournament. When asked for my newsletter prediction yesterday, my thought process was, I'm not going to take any risks. I just need to bank a few points. And I went to the effort because that's how I'd started to feel about him at slams. And look at, I don't want to be too harsh on him because I don't think that's a terrible defeat at all. You know, we just discuss what hasn't do at slams. But it is the sort of defeat that Francis tiafoe has had and has had a fair bit at slams. You know, showing us what he can do, but ultimately coming up a little bit short. And I thought they'd been a shift. I really thought I've reframed how I feel about Francis TFO after the U.S. open last year and after saying what he said after that defeat to alcaraz. I'll be back. I'll win this thing one day and the new intent he's got the way he's talking in fronting up to some of the early stages of his career when he doesn't feel like he worked hard enough. I don't know, still very well might be of new Francis tiafoe. I hope so. But today I used to feed wasn't new Frances. Disappointment for him.

"You know, but if he crashes out to Jack Draper in straight sets, I will be bringing up the paddling pool thing. I reserve the right to bring up the paddling pool thing. Here's a question for you. Do you read anything into if you watch a warmup on court the knock up? And you see a player shanking or hitting a topspin forehand that lands in the bottom of the net. So something like that. Do you ever think, oh, that's amazing. I think if it's if it's clearly a sign of nerves, yeah, I agree. I assume that they'll come through that. For example, Alexei crow tech today in the final round of qualifying in the warm up and in the early games of the match, he was rubbish, completely different player what we ended up seeing in sets two and three. I was thinking, couldn't middle the ball at all. They weren't quite shanks, but the ball just didn't sound right off the racket. You could tell it wasn't coming out of the middle. And he was, you know, he was the biggest match of his life, biggest day of his whole life. You know, by qualifying today, he yearned more than his total career prize money to date. Wow. So no wonder, but yes, in that sort of instance, I think you can read into it. But I don't think you can read form from that kind of thing. But again, brackets reserve the right to raise the paddling pool thing. And we also know that form as match just detailed is not good in terms of his recent record. Yeah. Nor was it last year. I mean, I know he had won Melbourne one or two. Was it who could sign? Maybe Nadal's trophy says Melvin one or Melvin too. You'd want one of them. But then before that, it was on crutches. And you know, there are caveats to his form at the end of last year, weren't they never plays well indoors. Fairly sure. I did promise I would not have this type of conversation about no doubt again. Yeah. Every every slam I say I won't doubt on the dart again, and yet here we are. But I mean, the thing is, it's not just Draper. That makes his draw tough. You know, I think if he comes through Draper, he'll probably be playing quite well. But Francis TFO is a potential fourth round opponent who of course beat him at the U.S. open and then daniil Medvedev is a potential quarterfinal list. And okay, Nadal won last year's final, but it was kind of a miracle that he did. Medvedev was really on top of him for half of that match. It's tricky for Nadal. I really do think that it is even even potentially Brandon nakashima in the second round. He's got a great backhand nakashima and Nadal likes hitting his lefty forehand into players backends. And I think nakashima will be okay with that. So that sort of match up, I find quite interesting as well. So yeah, just tricky for Nadal, but fascinating to see how he how he tries to navigate it. The second quarter so a potential semifinal opponent for Nadal or Medvedev, who were the top seeds in that first quarter, he got Stefano sits a pass there. He faces contact at least in the opening round. I mean, it's busy as the favorite. But Elise's after being a sort of hotly tipped junior is finally starting to put a few results together, isn't he? The French man. He pushed Djokovic, last week, a couple of tiebreak sets, and he really was hurting job of it. He was 5 two up in the first set, probably should have probably should have won it. And I think it got to the quarters in Auckland this week. So yeah, he's playing quite well. That's a little bit tricky for sits a path. Lorenzo musetti is in this quarter as is Yannick sinner. They would potentially face off in the third round, which I think could be very interested is interesting indeed. Cameron norrie is in there that is TBC though, because he might be stuck in Auckland for the rest of his life. But where are they? Genuinely not sure if they'll ever finish that tournament. Well, he's into the semifinals to face Jenson brooksby at the time of recording the two other semifinalists and not known. And that this is half past 9 on Thursday and they're supposed to be playing tomorrow. Gasket and Goffin are just in a rain delay at the moment. And then I think laszlo gero is in the other quarterfinal. I can't remember who he's playing. He beat Casper Ruud. So a long way to go. A lot of matches have been moved indoors, but they're trying to blow as much of it outdoors as they can, because obviously they do due respect to the tournament, a lot of people are playing that to get practice for the Australian open and play themselves into form and indoor form is pretty different. So I feel for them over in Auckland, but we're all Cameron nori. And feed it socially seem down at the bottom of that second quarter of Azure possible countrymen for him in the opening round and a potential second round with stammer rinker. Anyone want to throw out some predictions into the ethos, see anything unexpected happening. What do we think the usual suspects are likely candidates are coming through? I do think, actually, you're seeing could be threatened in that section. I think he's vulnerable against whether it's nori or charge personally. I think that that's a tough section to be. And that not say can't, you can't come through it. I mean, I don't know, I kind of think norrie might be a marginal favorite to come through that section of the draw and end up facing sitter pass. That's how I feel about it. What do you think? I think Felix needs some Auckland rain, doesn't he? That would change the picture. I think I'll probably end up going with auger aliasing. But I don't disagree with your analysis, David. I think that's, that is a tricky, tricky section for him. I just sort of, come on, now is the time, Felix, to get through a really tough section like this and go really deep in a slam. We will find out a lot about him. Over the course of the next few days, maybe a couple of weeks we'll see, yeah, very interesting one to watch Felix augers theme, looking at the bottom half of the draw Andre Rublev is at the top of it. He's drawn Dominic team. In the opening round, I wanted a good draw for Dominic team. I want something to happen. I know Rublev lost yesterday in Adelaide to the Nazi kokina. On paper, not a great result, although kokina does seem to be an Adelaide specialist defending champion of course. I think one again tonight reached the semifinals again. Still though. That's a rubbish draw for Dominic team. I think the bigger point really is team. It's a bit like you were saying about Garcia. If Dominic team was Dominic team, that we remember. He would handle Andrei Rublev, no matter what rob left did. But the guy isn't the same player anymore. I'm afraid. And we've seen flickers of him reminding us of how good he used to be. But that's all we've seen. Really run to a semifinal and I think it was. We've seen some matches where he's hit the signature backhand and you just, you're still drool and pear over watching it. But he doesn't walk around with authority anymore. He doesn't walk around making you believe that he's got it all under control. My rational brain does accept that your right David, but I actually, I'm just not I'm not ready. I'm not ready yet. I'm going to stay in denial.

"Of the trusted news anchors in Washington, on NBC four. She'll wrap it all up at the end of this month, but her final interview with a tennis phenom. Is on tap right now. This morning, The Rain talks about her career as she looks back and the loss that she dealt with during it. The personal losses have been pretty public, Jim Vance, and Wendy rieger. And that was very difficult getting through both of those. But I've just been having quite a time as I get ready to depart hearing from so many people so many kind words. It's really been kind of overwhelming. I'm trying to read all of the nice comments and emails and things. And I just really, really appreciate all of it. Some of the things that have meant the most to me are comments from people who appreciate some of the stories that we've done, particularly around mental health. And it's kind of strange to be leaving. I don't know what it's going to feel like when I wake up on Monday morning and I don't have to I don't have to get ready for work. I don't want to make you feel old, but I've been watching you and Jim since I was a kid. I had a lot of fun, you guys were always number one in my house. And this could be a tough question, but what are one or two highlights from all those years? I got to imagine Jim was involved with him, but maybe something else too. I'd have a hard time pinpointing one or two highlights. We just had a lot of fun together. I think that Vance and I both fully appreciated how lucky we were to be working together. We had we're very different people very different personalities, but it worked. And we made each other laugh and we had a great time working together. And then you throw in George Michael and bob Ryan and arch Campbell, those were some really, really fun times. So doreen, you're going out with this beautiful interview on Francis T off. Tell us about that. Well, anybody who was paying attention to professional tennis this year knows what an incredible year he's had and he's our hometown guy. We've covered him since he was a kid at the tennis center in college park, and the story is about how the team at med star health helped him overcome some injuries and get on the right track. He really put it all together this year and was in the semifinals at the U.S. open. The first American to do that in many years and it was just great fun for all of us to be able to watch him do so well. So we're going to talk with him and also talk with the physical therapist who has been his trainer for the past year and they both talk about what it took to get Francis TFO up to that superstar level that he accomplished this year. When is the final sign off and will you be crying? I'll be wearing waterproof mascara. It's on news

"It wasn't Venus. So thank you very much. And all those stepping away from the court by some of the sport's greatest stars is intensifying discussion here in the U.S. about the new up and coming players, including the young Francis TFO, who made it to the men's semifinals before losing to Carlos alcaraz. I'm going to come back and I will win this thing one day. I'm sorry, guys. TFO is the first black American to reach the semifinals since tennis great. Arthur Ashe did that more than 50 years ago. And tennis star and ESPN commentator, Patrick Mack, and roe, says they're just some amazing stories behind some of the younger players who will infuse new energy in the sport. And here he is with Bloomberg's Kathleen Hayes. Let's listen in. Francis giacomo store is an incredible one. It's like an American fairytale, really, with his parents coming from Sierra Leone, his mom working two jobs as a nurse. His dad being the head of maintenance at a tennis facility, and that's how Francis and his twin brother happened to get into tennis. Just amazing, but also these guys play with so much with athleticism, style. And they love it. And the crowds love them. Well, I was fortunate enough to be in Arthur Ashe. When tiafoe beat Nadal, that was quite a moment for a lot of people. Not only the thrill of seeing this young man that we've been watching just his acceleration in his development as a tennis player, right? And also for people kind of there in nostalgia about seeing Rafa Nadal, who's not done yet, present presumably, but see him lose not even get to the finals. I mean, it was a great performance by Francis and even though Nadal was at his absolute best. It was still pretty darn good. And tiafoe had a really play well and finish him off because the Dow is not going to give anything away. And remember Rafa hadn't lost a match in a major all year, he won the first two majors of the year in Australia and at the French Open. And then had to withdraw before his semifinal with Nick curios at Wimbledon because of the stomach injury. So because of the stomach injury all summer that he was nursing, he wasn't really at a 100%. But again, that being said, he's still Rafa. You still got to finish him off. And tiafoe did that. And then he came back to be the very tough Andrei Rublev this Russian in the quarterfinals to make his move into the semifinals. Oh, yeah. He's a dynamo for sure. So it is part of this new era about race losing Serena gaining TFO. Is the new era about tennis also spreading to more different kinds of people in the U.S. and globally. Well, definitely has done that on the women's side. I mean, you've saw the Serena and Venus effect with lots of young African American women who are now not that young, but you've obviously got the youngest one and coco Goff when you've had Madison keys and Sloane Stephens. And countless others. So I've seen a change even in the last ten years attending a lot of junior tennis tournaments as I do with even in our tennis academy at Randall's island here, the McEnroe tennis academy. So I've seen the impact from all backgrounds of particularly young girls. And I hope that tiafoe will have some impact on young boys because I still think at least in the United States it's not as popular in the African American community. Tennis, it is for women. I think mostly because of Venus and Serena and also because in professional women's tennis, you can make a lot of money. So that attracts more people of all different backgrounds to the sport, whereas tennis for guys for young boys is not at the top of the list. But worldwide, you're actually right. I mean, players coming from all over the world is just amazing. The popularity of tennis has grown in other parts of the world. Especially in the last 20 years, which is why in some ways, the U.S., I think, fell behind in creating and helping develop top players. But it's good to see that that's the women's side. We're doing very well. And on the men's side, we're starting to see an impact of tiafoe, Taylor Fritz, Tommy Paul, Opel, brooksby, corda. We've got a good group of good, really good young American men, but TFO definitely has the most charismatic of all those players. I think the first one now to get through to a major semifinal. We'll ask a couple other questions looking ahead, for example, will someone not named Nadal when the French Open in 2023? That's a great question, Kathleen. Some of it depends on the health of Nadal. He did look a little bit slower, which he actually admitted in his post match press conference. I'm going to say yes. I'm going to say yes, someone will. I mean, it's got to happen at some point, right? I mean, I think with alcaraz's development, Casper Ruud, who's great play core player, got to the finals last year, losing to Nadal. He would be a guy. And sinner, sinner, who lost to alcaraz can play on clay as well. So I think the younger generation, not only are they coming, Kathleen, they're here. They're here and I think that's sinner alcaraz match was really, to me, a generational shift in the way the game is played. The speed and the tempo that the match was played at was something I haven't seen before quite honestly. So whether the one of those guys or someone else can put that together in a major at the French Open if the Dell's healthy will be something to see next year and certainly be something to look for. How about Novak Djokovic? He's in great shape. He wants to play he wanted to play in this open and he couldn't. So what are his prospects looking like to you? I think his prospects are great. I mean, obviously it's been rough for him because of his decision not to be vaccinated to play a lot of tournaments. He hasn't been able to come to the U.S. and he's missed a lot of big events, obviously missed the Australian open. Those are two tournaments where he'd be the favorite at. But I think yes, he's still quick enough and nimble enough that he could play with these young guys, but I don't think for that much longer. I mean, that's how good I think this new players are. So, you know, I give them another one to three years, probably where if he can stay healthy and motivated and get into countries. And helping them that he's not able to play that many tournaments. But again, he knew what he was doing when he made a decision to not get back to he's the only tennis player at least in the top ranking to the world that made that decision. But from a tenant standpoint, there's no doubt that he can still play at this level for a couple more years. So another looking ahead question. Serena's retiring so we can

The first American to reach the men's U.S. open semi since 2006, but that's where the run ends with a semifinal defeat to Carlos alcaraz, tiafoe showed a whole lot of fight he was able to save a match point in the fourth set before ultimately falling in a decisive 5th set. I stuff you dream about doing. Fellow short, but I wanted to be here on Sunday, holding the cup. I had it in my head. I generally believe I could have won the U.S. open.
