So we are a fear based society. And that's the question I get the most. Will I run into, uh, leaving bands of murderers and rapists on the road and let me give you a real quick answer. No. If you go on the road, you will run into the best human beings anywhere. This country is full of fantastic, wonderful people. And they all live in terror. So they're all living in their homes and and living staying as far away from each other as they can, which is just a horrible shame, because this is a beautiful, fantastic country full of amazing people. And we all lived in terror in our homes. Last question if I if I run into one of these people, and I don't mean we have a car crash, what would your advice be to me to them? Just treat them like people. They're just people. They're just people like you. "Have been a number of significant winners at the Oscars Awards ceremony in Los Angeles. Yes, it's been an Oscars, unlike any other with covert restrictions. In effect, the 93rd Academy Awards has bean celebrating some of the best films. The past year on the red carpet for us, Peter Bows and Tom Brook. Peter, could I start with you? We've We've just found out what the best picture is. Yes, And the best picture is no model on this is the phone that is long being the favorite to win Best picture at the Academy Awards, Directed by Closure Oh, the Chinese filmmaker, she becomes the first woman of color to win best director at the Oscars, and we've just in the last few minutes heard that Frances McDormand has won for best actress for her starring role. In this film, so it really is quite a feat for this phone that tells the story of a group of nomads. It's partially scripted but partially real life because there are some non actors alongside Actors in this film that is set around or shortly after the financial crash of 2000 and eight these people who have lost everything because of what happened in the financial world, going on a journey and the western United States to try to earn some money through some odd jobs. I'm with here in Los Angeles, Tom Brook from the BBC's talking movies. Show and Tom, This is movie has so much better than people thought it has. I mean, it's got through. You know, Matt Land has three trophy is interesting in Frances McDormand, just one for best actress. This is her third Oscar. That I think puts her on a par with Meryl Street, but she doesn't have as many as you. Neither haven't many is. Katharine Hepburn did really good performance from Frances McDormand. I mean, she's most definitely One of American cinema's most reliable and charismatic, leading ladies on this film has done well. It's really the night does belong to note belong to Nomad land so far, and a very diverse night. If we look at these supporting actor and actress categories, both won by actors of color. That's very true. Daniel Cholula, who is British and black, one for best supporting actor and best supporting actress, with one by year Young Eun, who appears playing a grandmother in the film minority, So a very diverse night. Interestingly it's been a good night for women, I think particularly because We had Chloe Zhao winning for best director but also in original screenplay. Emerald Fennel, the British filmmaker. She won in that category That's normally thought of as a male preserve. So definitely progress on just briefly all of this, of course, taking place with the backdrop of covert 19. With the Oscars ceremony taking place at two venues that train station in downtown Los Angeles on the Dolby Theater just very quickly breaking news. Anthony Hopkins has won the award for best actor for his role in the phone. The father Thank you. Thank you. No one expected that you got them both the best picture and the best actor. "Let's start off with the major categories. First of all, for best picture. For the Golden Globes. They break it down. Best picture drama and best picture, music or comedy. So let's start off with best picture drama in which the nominees are Nomad Land. This is the amazing movie with Frances McDormand. Who, you know, play. Somebody who's her life is sort of falling apart and she gets in a van and hits the road and lives in RV camps and recreational areas taking on you know little seasonal jobs along the way. It zest a very sweet and very thoughtful, touching movie. I think this is going to be the big winner for tonight. You know People love Frances McDormand. I think that this is gonna have a lot of Lot of success at the Golden Globes tonight. It will be up against the trial of the Chicago Seven, which, if Nomad land doesn't win trial of the Chicago Seven is going to win. This is the Aaron Sorkin. The written and directed production about the famous Chicago seven trial that took place in Chicago 50 years ago. The Carrie Mulligan movie promising young woman Is a revenge thriller, also an outstanding films nominated for tonight and also the Anthony Hopkins movie called The Father. Those air. Your nominees were best Drama for performances in the dramatic category. For actresses. The nominees are Violet Davis on Drew a day, Vanessa Kirby, Frances McDormand and Carrie Mulligan. For best actors in the drama. The nominees are Riz Um, Ed Chadwick Boseman, Anthony Hopkins. I think the winners are going to be Frances McDormand and I just I don't know how Chadwick Boseman Doesn't win. He's amazing in the movie Ma Rainey's black bottom. But you know the fact that he passed away the young age and nobody knew that he was fighting cancer. I think that probably is going toe play into the Planted the decision making also for best movie, musical or comedy. The nominees are Boer at subsequent movie film Hamilton. When they put together a television version of Hamilton in the put it on Disney. Plus, this got nominated. The motion picture called Music was nominated, as was the comedy with Andy Sandberg, Palm Springs. And the Ryan Murphy directed production. The prom. Which has Meryl Streep and has just AH, whole variety of very talented actors. That's also nominated for best picture as well. I kind of have a feeling that Borat is going to want to ping the winner tonight in the musical or comedy category. For best actress in a motion picture Maria Buckler Cova, who is placed Borat's daughter in Borat. Subsequent movie film Kate Hudson from music. And, uh, Anya Taylor, Joy dominated for the movie called Emma for best performance by an actor in a motion picture, musical or comedy. Sasha Baron Cohen is nominated James Corden from the prom Lin Manuel Miranda from Hamilton Dev Patel for the personal history of David Copperfield and Andy Sandberg. For Palm Springs again. I think it's going to be a kind of in a reverend pick, but I think Sasha Baron Cohen could wind up being the winner. Now. The Golden Globes also give out

'Nomadland' drops Frances McDormand into a rootless life on the open road

"So nomad land is based on a nonfiction book of the same name by jessica bruder. It's about these folks who are in many cases older they're sort of battered by economic changes particularly the Economic meltdown of two thousand eight. They are left with very few options. And this fictional story about fern was written by khloe. jiao is also the director as we mentioned fern. This lifestyle is connected to her grief over her husband staff and it it leaves her at really the mercy of the weather and other people. She has no access to health. Care any kind of security. But there's also. I think it's safe to say a freedom in it that she appreciates at times She has a chance to see new things and be independent. There are a lot of kind of sweeping vistas of the western great plains and she starts to develop a relationship with a guy named dave. Who's played by david straight there and and obviously that complicates her wanderings somewhat. Glenn what did you think about nomad. Land. i mean this is pretty great right. I mean fair warning. It is unhurried. It is discursive it's also as you mentioned. It's in love with the natural environment which is very Khloe zhao thing. It's smartly a film that teaches you how to watch it because in those opening minutes we the audience are that woman that fern meets at the store. Were worried about her. Where the manager that gas station. We want her to find a shelter for the night. Because it's going to be cold She's been dealt a couple serious blows and the story of the film is her finding an equilibrium. It's not perfect and it's fragile and take some work to maintain we see the work it takes to maintain but he's got the strength and resolve to maintain it finds a community Found family which is something queer folk no little something about That said you take frances. Mcdormand out of the equation. I'm not sure. I'm still as invested. Because that actor is just an empathy engine. It just radiates from her Even when the role she's playing is more comedic as it is in fargo or even when it's a completely underwritten and onenote like it wasn't three billboards. There's not a trace of condescension in any role. She plays humankind essential or socioeconomic condescension. No actually remove no sense of judgment because francis. Mcdermott is a woman who graduated from the yale school of drama. She's married to a kohen brother. And what do the coen brothers love to do. More than make fun of a yokels. There's nothing about her holding fern at a remove when she's packing amazon boxes. That's fern packing amazon boxes. Even though it's france clearly packing boxes the scene where she goes on quite a bit about how she got more counter space in her van. E you play that wrong and that is a hollywood actor doing a ride along. That's fake but i mean there's something about are you just fall in love with firm. The way she smiles without opening her mouth There's such pain in it but there's joy now did i need fern to quote shakespeare at me. Nope did. I need the scene with her sister where she tells firm. That firm has always been strong in special and smart. Smells nice in this kind of puppies. I didn't need that either. Those moments felt like that was the film. Not trusting itself. Kind of putting on some training wheels So in the end. I think i was more taken by this amazing performance then by the movie itself. Interesting stephen i was taken by the amazing performance. And the film itself I think this is a wonderful piece of really subtle storytelling. It is so thoughtful. It is so respectful and careful and clever. You can tell that this movie. And it's makers spent time with its subjects and really got invested in their lives. This movie could have so easily tilted into mawkishness could so easily tilted into cynicism. It's so easily could've tilted into kind of capital. I issues based thundering and it never ever does. I mean it's funny. Glenn mentioned francis mcdormand's performance in three billboards outside ebbing missouri. The kind of purported to be about the real america kind of the real underbelly of america and it did so by throwing grotesques at us and this movie does the exact. It is a really human and lovely movie and its surrounds. Frances mcdormand and david strathern with nomads. With people who actually live this lifestyle and lets them tell their stories albeit fictionalised versions of their stories. And i just think that works beautifully. Well you can tell in spots when this movie is working with non-professional actors and you can kind of feel that but for the most part i just got totally lost in it. It is as glenn's had its unhurried. But i didn't find it slow at all. I loved this movie.

"Metro area medical centers. It's 5 41. There weren't many people in movie theaters in 2020. But there were some new films released, including the Unusual buddy comedy the Climb. She loves Me for who I Am. Mm. I love her for who she is. Right? Can't wait to spend the rest of my life with that kind of stuff. Whatever. What What do you mean slept? Like Fuck suck together. W T. O P is Dimitri sodas talked with film critic Christian Toto about his top three films of the year. The climb came in at Number three. You know, this was a movie that was gonna come out earlier in the year, Of course, got postponed. Like so many. It's called the climb and it's about to long term buddies. There's infidelity going on between them. You think it's going to basically shatter their friendship, But it doesn't And as the movie goes along, it kind of shows. Complicated bonds that men have sometimes and how they're able to weather some pretty serious storms. This is a comedy. It's very funny and in bits and pieces, but it's really kind of a character study in a way and also you have to go to see it to understand it. But the way the camera moves the way it's certain scenes orchestrated. It isn't just a smart buddy comedy. It's more than that. It's more sophisticated, more substantial. If for all these reasons, I really enjoyed the climb. All right, let's hear about your second best. Well, number two is more conventional pick from me. It's called Nomad Land. And then starts Frances McDormand As a woman. She's lost her husband. She's unemployed. She doesn't have a lot of money. So she hits the road in her van. She's part of this wandering group of people who are seeking freedom, seeking a disconnect from society doing it for a lot of different reasons. Often very personal reasons and the filmmaker behind this really met people who live this lifestyle in corporate. Their stories into the film incorporated the people themselves as supporting players. It all works. McDorman is a great act. She's wonderful here, but it's the seamless way. They kind of interweave the real people living this life with the actors. It's really enjoyable. It kind of movie where it holds some of the things that are important back. You have to kind of wait until the last active, fully grasp what's going on, But it's clever. It's thoughtful. It's interesting and really shows a subset of our world that we don't normally see on the big screen. As it happens, there's actually one more on your list you thought was even better than that. Frances McDormand Picture What is your very best movie of 2020? You know, I'm begging another genre film in a way, and this is a thriller. It's called alone and just a quick warning. If you want to see it, there is another film called Alone Out this year. That is about zombies. So I haven't seen that movie and may be fine. But this is the one I'm talking about. It's called alone. It's about a woman who was being stalked by a serial killer. Ah, very simple premise. You think? Well, that could be interesting, maybe engaging, no big deal, but it's the way they're Ratched up. "Climb comes in third. This was a movie that was gonna come out earlier in the year, of course, got postponed. Like so many. It's called the climb and it's about to long term buddies. There's infidelity going on between them, you think is going to basically shatter their friendship. But it doesn't And as the movie goes along, it kind of shows. Complicated bonds that men have sometimes and how they're able to whether some pretty serious storms. This is a comedy. It's very funny and in bits and pieces, but it's really gonna about character study in a way and also you have to go to see it to understand it. But the way the camera moves the way it's certain scenes orchestrated. It isn't just a smart buddy comedy. It's more than that. It's more sophisticated, more substantial if rolls reasons. I really enjoyed the climb. All right, let's hear about your second best. Well, number two is a more conventional pick from me. It's called Nomad, Lan. And it starts Frances McDormand As a woman. It's interesting and really shows a subset of our world that we don't normally see on the big screen Has it happens There's actually one more on your list you thought was even better than that. Frances McDormand Picture What is your very best movie of 22? You know, I'm begging another genre film in a way, and this is a thriller. It's called alone and just a quick warning. If you want to see it, there is another film called Alone Out this year. That is about zombies. So I haven't seen that movie and may be fine. But this is the one I'm talking about. It's called alone. It's about a woman who was being stalked by a serial killer. Ah, very simple premise. You think? Well, that could be interesting, maybe engaging, no big deal, but it's the way they're Ratched up. Attention is the way these two characters tried to thwart each other's efforts. It's the way this Lo bill to the first act happens. This one really riveted me and again. It's an unconventional pick. "This is actress Frances McDormand as the main character Fern, and she's responding to questions and some concerns about her life. You were one of those lucky people that can travel anywhere. Yes, ma'am, I hold sometimes call you nomads. My mom said that you're homeless. Is that true? No, I'm not homeless. I'm just house, Liss, not the same thing right now. My husband worked at the U. S. G Mine in Empire. I was a substitute teacher. It is a tough time right now. You may want to consider early retirement. Need work like work, Sean there say a documentary like quality to what we heard. They're just explain a bit more about how the movie plays out and why it spoke to, especially this moment. Well, it's based on a really, really good book by Jessica Bruder and I would recommend of you to go see the film and generally don't suggest this. Read the book first and then and then see the movie what this movie is about, and we talked about this little bit earlier. Our people on the margins, you know, and it's not just the people who are sleeping on the sidewalk that you step around. It's the invisible poor, and it's a story about About poverty. It's a story about people you know, forming communities to try to get by When you open an Amazon box. After you see this film, you will think about what's inside that box and a very different way because a lot of these people do seasonal work at Amazon for human centers, and it's a huge part of the book. It's a smaller part of the movie. In fact, Frances McDormand in this film actually does work in Amazon Fulfillment center. She also does some other jobs, including sugar beet harvesting, because that's the story of what these people are doing seasonally to get by. So I think it's really on because it's populated by all of these real nomads. It is a portrait of a country That we don't see. We don't acknowledge. And these are people who well before the pandemic. We're barely getting by and it's about the marginalized. It's about the people who have suffered some sort of setback. That wasn't necessarily their own fault. There's a reference thereto empire, which was the city that gypsum company ran that closed up overnight. And all these people work this place and they had nothing to do. They work there for decades, and now they had no job. So it's really a story about capitalism. It's a story about surviving. It's a story about friendship, and it's incredibly moving and included. Jaw is such a great filmmaker very naturalistic, not a lot of fancy camera work or score anything. It's an observation of life of people that we don't necessarily observe or even notice. They wanted to avoid with her character to because being pregnant so first of all. She's like the police chief as a little pregnant lady. So that's good. But then also there were talking about the stereotype. Where if there's a pregnant woman in a tv show or movie. She always ends up having the baby in the middle of the movie or something or like in a middle of a climax or something so they avoided that too and she just has the baby later. She is fine by the end. She's a very good detected. Though kids really smart she knew all of it all of it he literally was. The guy was like a deal or is the license plate. You didn't finish it. She's like dealer to dealer dealer I liked the two girls that's Steve semi his friends Paid for sex with and they were being invested or interrogated by frances mcdormand. You won't even give me like, oh how this movie is coming up. It's not true. What movies are coming up to? There's a lot of movies coming up house actually house on Pittsville another movie that that is a movie where it's actually just planning our next. You know, Jason has been doing these trailer shows with me at the beginning of every month. We're just planning out the next one of that Jujitsu with Nick Cage. That looks great with Mandy to I'll do I'll do it any sequel to Mandy. But yeah, I don't you Jitsu there's this what's that? I forget what it's called though. They're doing Frances McDormand won like well, I mean that stars are so it's called off. So it was great. Well, yeah, whatever whatever it is Nomad land. I think it's called. Yeah, it's supposed to be like one of the best movies of the year. It's like already like winning all these awards at film festivals and they say it's going to be a big black Contender. So we'll probably see it because that's the way things are now is that you know, you get to see these movies anymore. Well, that's a whole nother conversation. Hopefully, I'll be able to see these movies though. I'm starting to get on a list or two jobs here and there. Yeah, you're like a credential real movie reviewer. I have two words to leave with you tonight. Inclusion rider. That's a contractual clause requiring diversity in hiring all to little avail. The academy pledging to do better has made strides and diversifying its membership, including doubling the number of persons of color in three years, though the organization is still overwhelmingly white and male. Now it's taking action to ensure that at least one category best picture is Mohr inclusive. Starting next year, it will phase in requirements for diversity with regard to race, ethnicity, gender and the differently abled in four areas, representation on screen leadership, off screen, apprenticeship opportunities and diversity in marketing and distribution. To be eligible for best picture in 2020 for a film will not have to satisfy all those standards, just two of them. It's worth noting that there has always been one smidgen of diversity at the Oscars.
