"Chaos would be one way to describe what's happening with the Patriots offense right now. But yeah. Show that would be another. Because in Foxborough, there is no offensive coordinator, not right now at least. There is also no offensive football adviser or whatever that title would be. There is just Bill Belichick. At age 70, the hoodie in winter. The Logan Roy of Foxborough, a guy we've all agreed is a defensive genius. Now daring us to trust his offensive wisdom and contain our snickering in the process. So today, Seth waker sham explains how a multivariate mystery in New England is actually isolating one variable in particular. And why all of it? Epitomizes one of the most important coaches. In the history of sports, I'm Pablo Torre. It is Tuesday, August 16th. This is ESPN daily. Traveling for business and don't know where to stay. So Seth for our non football nerds in the audience. I just wanted to establish what it's normally like in the NFL. If your head coach is a defensive minded guy, quote unquote. Like, how does the offense function and who calls the plays and that's circumstance? We'll usually a head coach gets that job because they have a particular expertise on that side of the ball, whether it's offense or defense. And so they're hired partially and mostly for that expertise. And they usually delegate responsibility for whatever side of the ball that they're not the expert on to their offensive coordinator or defensive coordinator and kind of let them run the show. Obviously, as the head coach, they can set broad plans, but it's up to the offensive coordinator or the defensive coordinator to execute those plans. Bill Belichick, of course, is different and the way the New England Patriots are run, of course, is very different from anywhere else in the league. And what I've seen from the Patriots from afar, Seth, obviously, is Bill Belichick, the Hall of Famer, the guy who is already in canton for all intents and purposes. The guy who constructed this defensive game plan is genius masterpiece for the giant Super Bowl 25 against the bills, which built this reputation as this forever defensive guru. So what led you to learn about his offensive history? Yeah, years ago, I wanted to try to find out about how Bill Belichick ran offense because when you talk to players out of New England, they said that the type of offense that they ran was the most unique in the NFL in that it's only identity was that it had no identity. It wasn't strictly from Joe Gibbs. It wasn't from Bill Walsh. It wasn't all from Ron erhardt, which is some of the stuff that Belichick knew very well when he was with the New York Giants. Right, that's Ron erhardt, the Giants offensive coordinator in the 80s and the early 90s under Bill Parcells. It was this mosaic of all the most successful offensive systems in plays that Belichick had seen and I wanted to learn more about that. So years ago, I went down this rabbit hole, and it sent me to Tennessee to meet with this old man who's since passed named Ken ship. And he was one of the main people who helped Bill Belichick learn so much about offense in about advanced schematics. Now, should I know who this guy is? 'cause I have no idea who Ken ship is. He was kind of an offensive wizard in the 70s in a weird way he's most famous for benching Joe Namath. He became the interim head coach of the New York Jets one year, and he actually benched Joe Namath for missing curfew. He was known as an Ariel wizard. He was a progressive thinker of the passing game, and he had coached Namath, Archie Manning, former St. Louis quarterback Jim Hart. In 1977, Lions head coach, Rick forzano, told ship that he had hired a new assistant for him, a 24 year old from wesleyan university named Billy Belichick. Wait, hold on, Seth. It's one letter, but Bill Belichick in no way to me feels like a Billy. He was a total Billy. Everybody knew him as a Billy. And what was Billy into at this point? Unfortunately for ship, Billy was fascinated with defense, not offense. And there's a funny anecdote about ship thinking that Bill Belichick couldn't hang with him. He gave him a 5 hour test about the playbook and Belichick had been studying forward and studying for it and ship didn't think that Belichick would actually be able to pass this test, not with how complicated his playbook was. But Belichick took the test and shipped later told other coaches and told me that he damn near answered everything. So Billy Belichick aces Ken ships test and goes on, of course, as we know now, to ace all sorts of tests in the Super Bowl, but the notion that this guy who was defensively interested also had all along this offensive acumen, Seth. How did that all fit together in terms of his understanding and mastery of the game? Well, in the 1980s, Belichick was fortunate in many ways. I'm sure that he didn't always feel that way, but in retrospect, it was fortunate that he faced so many innovative offenses during that time. From Joe Gibbs Washington teams, Bill Walsh's forty-niners, the run and shoot, even things that the Giants ran in practice. It was the moment in NFL history that was really starting to shift from running to passing. And Belichick knew and kinship actually told him this. Because kinship had been known and kind of pigeonholed as an offensive wizard and never a head coach, and he told Belichick, you have to be balanced. You have to know all three phases of the game, and Belichick took that seriously and when he was with the Giants. He would study offense as not just because he had to defend against them, but because he was starting to assemble an offensive playbook so that if he ever got a job as a head coach, he would know exactly what it is that he wanted to run. In a very interesting way that's very revealing and it tells you a lot about where he is now. He was never going to cede that side of the ball to an offensive coordinator. Even from that age in his late 30s, he knew that when he became a head coach, he was ultimately responsible in the teams that he was the head coach of. We're going to be running his offense. And so basically he had the ultimate confidence because he was so good at scheming up defenses that he could also scheme up the things that his defenses were designed to stop. And had a hard time stopping. I think that's one of the most important things is that they weren't always successful. But he knew the hardest types of plays to stop. And so in his spare time, he put together his own offensive playbook, borrowing and tweaking place from other teams. And it ended up kind of being his own that he invented. So how did Belichick see offense in defense being separate, but obviously conjoined inside of the

"And today, July 5th, the day after July 4th, I think we're all dragging through the day a little bit today. I like the July 4th outs when you get the 5th off, right? What happened to that July 4th? Let's go back to that holiday weekend style whereas this time around. It was like yesterday was like Sunday, right? You had to get up and work today. It was kind of a bummer, but hey, listen, it's you might have treated it like that. I certainly didn't. So I apologize when little groggy. That's true. That's true. Alex and I were together on a beach in hole. Yesterday. And I had to drive home at a certain point. So I wasn't quite as partaking quite as much in the festivities. Let's say that, as some of the other people at the event, there yesterday, but it was fun. We had a blast now. We're going to talk some patriots and exactly three weeks from today. At three weeks on the dot, veterans have to report to training camp at Gillette stadium in Foxborough and three weeks from tomorrow. Believe it or not, first day of training camp. July 27th, it's basically here. I mean, look, we had three weeks is not that much time, right? That's going to go by in a blink of an eye. And so the off season is essentially over. We're wrapping it up, we're seeing players more and more guys working out, posting on Instagram. I retweeted something a Jalen mills. He was working with Jamar chase Deandre swift in Leonard fournette. I'm assuming they all have the same agent or something like that, manager or some sort of connection there to bring those four guys together kind of an odd group. But yeah, three weeks away from the first day of veterans reporting the training camp, a three day three weeks and a day away from the first day of training camp. So at this point in the off season, I always do my most important patriots list every year, the top ten players that are the most important to the team's success in the upcoming season. I like to use the Jenga.

"So shout out to Romeo crennel a real one. Obviously three times Super Bowl champion with the Patriots and those defenses, all of Romeo's defenses with the Patriots were awesome to watch, right? I mean, it didn't get any better than that. All right, so once again, you can read Alex and I tomorrow on Wednesday at day two of patriots mini camp. We'll also have some videos of me from Foxborough right here on patriots press pass reporting down there and recapping what happens on Wednesday and then on Thursday we'll do another recap show like tonight 6 o'clock right after practice at some point on Thursday evening and Alex and I will break down day three and wrap up mini camp for the Patriots on Thursday afternoon. So make sure to come back to patriots press pass for recaps and reports from Foxborough tomorrow, but then also patriots beat will be back on Thursday afternoon to talk about mini camp and put a bow on the spring off season program for the Patriots. There is currently scheduled one practice next week that is supposed to be open to the media. I'm still 50 50 or whether or not they're gonna hold that practice or not. We'll end up we'll see what happens, but sometimes if they get what they need to get done at mandatory mini cam, they cancel the rest of the off season program and let everybody go enjoy their summer. We'll see what ends up happening with that last OTA practice next week. But like I said, Alex and I will be back on Thursday and thanks so much for watching and listening and allowing us to do the Boston sports 30 minutes that we just got in there. And it'll be a lot of fun as always and we'll have another show on Thursday to recap mini camp in on day three of patriots mini camp down at Gillette. So thanks so much for watching everybody, but until next time, signing off for Alex barth I'm Evan Lazar. Thanks for watching and we'll see you Thursday..

"I think that's kind of a technicality. The way to do this, Breyer is going to be in Foxborough this season. He's going to be a patriot this season one way or another. So I don't necessarily think that that discussion is really to be had. The whole coaching thing though, I think that people don't realize, first of all, number one, how much of a pay cut that is to go from backup quarterback player to coach is definitely something that is a huge like tenfold. Yeah. It's also something that is a huge time commitment to go from a player to a coach. Coaches, I don't think people realize sometimes how much coaches work, especially assistant coaches that are grinding tape and padding and coming up with all these game plans and things like that and scouting opponents. They're there 24/7 around the clock, especially during the season. So that's quite the time commitment for somebody like Brian Hoyer too. So he's got, he's got the best of both worlds. He's got the paycheck and he's got the player schedule to throw that all away to be a coach. I think that they're literally going to have to tell him and I mean all 32 teams are literally going to have to tell Brian Hoyer. There is no place for you on an NFL roster anymore before we get to the point where he's thinking about coaching. And at the same time for the Patriots, there's then limitations on how much time Brian Hoyer can spend with Mac Jones working with him that don't exist when they're teammates. So outside of the roster, de Ross was spot is the only reason that the patriot that it would incentivize the Patriots to make Brian Hoyer a coach and there is no reason for Brian Hoyer to want to be a coach if the team will still have him as a player. There's none. So there's also, I mean, on top of everything you said, he might have already hit the top threshold. He might be another year or two in terms of pension, you know, years in the league tied into that. What do you get in terms of health insurance after he retires? He's not, he's not just going to be like, yeah, I'll be a coach that's fine. That's not how anything works. Yeah, absolutely. So Jared Stidham in a very similar position as Nikhil Harry honestly in terms of he's got no trade value. He's probably got very little value on the roster, but it wouldn't completely shock me if they carry all four guys. I think that they might see that with chocolate. Yeah. It's something to do with numbers why. So I hear you. But go ahead. At that point. Yeah. What's the benefit? What is instead of giving you this? I guess I go back to, I go back to the 2001 patriot quarterback room and obviously drew blood. So it was on that team and Brady. So 2002, you have, you know, they've had numbers back then. Back then, you were able to carry an extra quarterback that didn't count against your roster. Okay, that's a fair point. So if Jared didn't count him against the roster, I'm.

"Who the hell are they going to respect? Magic? I mean, who are you going to bring in? Remember what, you know, I like to go back to what people and I sing with Brady when Brady gave the interview with Jim gray and said, ask about whether he was appreciated and said, I plead the 5th and, you know, people should write down and there, you know, put on notice about something that's going on in Foxborough. Because he's so crazy, you know, when Kyrie Irving said that we don't need a coach. You don't need a coach. Just file that one away. It might be your head. Right. For any coach walking into that job, that he should be aware of and you know what? Take time in his word. Well, also, though, we've seen, especially in the NBA to me, you have guys that have had great careers that have been all of him careers. And could coaching match anything that Steve Nash's experience. I mean, like Jeff just said, why would Steve Nash care? A time all star two time MVP, I mean, at one point the guy was a human highlight film of the NBA, right? The only thing I mean he didn't get a title. So, you know, is this going to really hurt Steve Nash probably not. So that brings my question to you, bob Ryan, is, you know, other than Larry Bird when, you know, with the pacers and they could go to the finals, is this another example of why usually a Hall of Fame type player doesn't make a great head coach. Reason, I don't want to sign on to that is the specific nature of this circumstance because you're talking about Kyrie Irving being in. But it's not fair. There's never been a comparable person, really, of consequence in this league with the complicated nature of Kyrie Irving. That's right. You have to deal with. And so I have to say I can't throw him in that category..

And so things like that, it would, I would go over my splits or I would tell one of my athletes a story about one of my races to show them that yes, you can do this. It's my November, matter matters. And to help them, I said, it happens. It's real. You can do this. You're fit enough. Don't worry about it. I got you ready to, you can handle anything because this happened to me. I helped you. You know, yeah. She's like that. But no, when it was happening though, oh, did you ever do this? Okay. I was the first time I was ranked. I think it was in 79. 79, 78. I was number three, roadrunner. And then 79, I was number two, and then 80 O's number one, and then 81, I was number one. And I remember walking into the football stadium, the Patriots football stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts. And I went in and I went to the tunnel, I got my seat, and I stood there, and I looked around and I went.

It's my brother's like you kidney. Says yeah so. He hangs out with the kid and he said about. I don't know fifteen minutes later. Twenty minutes later you hear these motorcycles driving through like you hear them coming up the pier and there's two motorcycles and a limo and tutu limos come up behind them and they pull up in front of the channel and The motorcycles are ravin and every everything parks and the to the two. Two two guys ride the motorcycle. Take the helmets off. It's larry mullen and bajo so you know what your your time line could absolutely be right. "The lead analyst for MLB network Harold Reynolds That is straight ahead on the Bloomberg business of sports show but first let's look at some of the top stories of the week And let's begin with Tom terrific Tom Brady he came back to Gillette stadium Here is the scene in Foxborough We'll let you listen to watches Tom Brady returns as a visitor to the first time And lordy did we watch that game across America Lindsay I know it meant something to you because that is your home turf What did you think about it And the NFL ratings were through the roof in this game Yeah the second highest NFL game in recent memory only the cowboys and Washington football team of above ten years ago had a higher rating which really surprised me because I don't think they take into account how many people are watching on tablets on phones on the desktop computers I don't think Nielsen has access to all those ratings But this was everything it built up to be There were no losers in this game Brady came back Belichick of had a defense form and the game wasn't decided until Nick folks 56 yard field goal hit the upright with 52 seconds to go And this was just an absolute bonanza It was a huge game of Tom Brady No surprise was a rousing ovation as you just heard right there But once the game started people were given thumbs down to Tom He just an opponent Scarlett I know that everybody's been talking about this game but the biggest thing that I think about it is the NFL is always king when it comes to the four major food groups when it comes to sports Absolutely And it wasn't just this game either The NFL saying that the average game has had 17.3 million viewers this season That is a 17% increase from the same time as 2020 Granted 2020 is not a normal year but still this is kind of better than what anyone expected And apparently Tom Brady is in the center of most of these most viewed games the 21 most watched shows on TV since the start of the season NFL games what are they bucks versus patriots Obviously cowboys versus bucks cowboys versus chargers box versus rams and steelers versus packers So Tom Brady and three of those games it's pretty pretty notable I've been interesting theory on all those games Because I've talked to a lot of people it is the advent in the emergence of these gambling platforms giraffe king's FanDuel MGM Caesar's where you used to just bet the game the line in the game okay but I'm giving 7 and a half points So the over under is 42 I'm taking the over the under But it's the game continues You can bet on who's going to score the next touchdown You can bet on whether that's going to the game is going to end in an even number of points or an odd number of points So right to the very very end until the clock reads zero zero zero People are still gambling on the game on some different prop bet And I know I heard from a bunch of young people who are over someone's house watching one day and if a guy named pat Frye move of the Pittsburgh steel is caught a touchdown pass in the last two minutes of the game they were going to win $900 and they kept the game on because of that And I think that's one of the reasons that we've seen there's a real surge in 17 percentages at scarlet in viewership And you gotta wonder whether the advertising rates for a spot near the end of the game versus the middle of the game versus the start of the game they're going to start to be equalized There's gambling going on in this establishment I'm shocked Yeah right Let's move on to the next topic Oh my goodness This is let's start the golfing feud These two guys they've dominated the golf headlines And.

So and you flip me. Because i listened to you and i flipped won that game. So yeah we we. We cleaned up last week doing this. Yeah we did so. We're in this one to this. This is gimme the home team I'm not worried about the number. I mean the four and a half four. yes it would be nice if it was just. It's okay. I think we're good Let's bet it all right. Let's get to the games on sunday. And i have not bet this game yet so i want your take on it but this is where i'm going to be. I think patriots are starting mack jones at home. The miami dolphins if you look at the numbers divisional dogs in week. One had been very very profitable to and defense going in patriots or seven and won their last eight games up against the patriots lower. Seventy one at home against miami and their last eight games in foxborough. I like the points..

"It's obviously this Sunday in Foxborough taking on the Miami Dolphins. It's Mac Jones season. It's really all about Mac obviously for heading into week one. He gave an interview the other day where he said, you know, he's not surprised he was named the patriot starting quarterback. And again, this is a topic of conversation here, you know, how it came about. You spent a lot of time on BS J, breaking down exactly how the Patriots came to this decision. We'll get into that in a minute, but just first off, you know, I hate doing the people are talking. Some people are talking thing. But is this level of confidence something you like to see in your rookie quarterback? Or is it a little bit, you know, could this comment not surprised be construed or to take in the wrong way? Because I like it. I like it. I love it. I love it. I mean, I want my quarterback to be the big alpha male in the locker room. I mean, look, you know, you can say all you want about fitting into the team culture and stuff like that. But every team needs it later. And there's no bigger leader in team sports than the quarterback on a football team. And I love what I've seen out of Mac this summer. I love what I've heard out of them. I mean, he's boring as hell, but that's what you get from two guys who have played for a guy who played for Nick Saban and Bill belt, now Bill Belichick. But he definitely has this quiet cockiness and you know, I think that that cockiness is deserved because it comes from knowledge, knowing that you're prepared when you're prepared and when you do all the work, you should be confident in your own abilities. And that's what I see with Mac Jones. And to me, there's nobody who's more prepared as a young quarterback to play in this league than Mac Jones in recent years. And you mentioned, you know, and we talked about it off the top here. You did a breakdown. And I agree a 1000% is you have to be, you want them to be confident. But he's confident in the right way. He's not saying I've got it all figured out. He's confident in his abilities, but he's also humble knowing he's got a ton to learn and he's got a lot to improve and he's in there like a sponge soaking it up. So I think he's hitting all the right notes with his stuff. So we spent a lot of time breaking down the decision on why exactly Mac Jones was named the starter. A lot of you know, reporters who were going down a camp were saying the max seemed to be ahead throughout both in what you saw in the training camp in the joint practices and the preseason games. Now Greg, you got a look at this coach is all 22 film. Most people don't have access to this. So it's pretty cool stuff and on BS, J and again, reason enough to subscribe. Head over to BS go subscribe BS, J dot com, buses for journal dot com 39 bucks a year 11 cents a day. Terrific stuff,.

"I imagine very different for those book ends. And then what about the kids in the middle in our district and acting bucks for. It's been pretty good. I mean lots of reminders about you need to pull it back up your nose or you know those types of things but kids are wearing them mean. I'm i have the benefit. I'm seeing them for you. Know a tiny chunk of their day like forty five minutes. So i'm sure classroom. Teachers are having a different experience. You know when it comes to the end of the day. my second graders. Third graders are starting to struggle with like having to wear it all day. I joked with my student teacher like yesterday was sort of a shock to the system. Because i haven't been having the you know to live my life in a mask all day And so it was like. oh okay. Yeah we have to get used to this again. And so i'm sure it's the same With the students. And so trying to you know. I'm not being so diligent. In terms of pulpy mass. Pile-up your mask clip your mask recognizing that we need to like ease into it and that we're all just doing our best and do you feel safe. Both for you and for the kids i do. I do. I talked to a lot of colleagues who were fully remote so in my district. We had a fully remote elementary school. And so all. The elementary schools fed into that one remote school. So you know about. I would say a third of my colleagues were fully remote and so their comfort level is very different. I didn't go remote at all last year. Like we were hybrid and then in april shifted to full in person so having done all of last year i feel comfortable and safe so i'm also thinking about this morning getting ready for this. We looked back at a conversation. We had with the superintendent from acton. Foxborough peter light. It was spring of twenty twenty. He wrote a letter to parents That got old strong response from parents in the act..
New England Patriots Cut Cam Newton; Mac Jones to Start
"Speaking with our breaking news at foxborough. The patriots are releasing cam newton. And we'll move forward with as their quarterback pro football focus posted this week that the alabama rookie has the best preseason rookie passing rate since two thousand thirteen and now look to do with him. Couldn't do last year. Get new england back to the playoffs. Oh shannon what will be the patriots record with mac as a start of the season trying to look as you mentioned. I've tried to schedule and looking at it I say this is gonna make the playoffs. And so i believe it's gonna take ten wins for them to make the playoffs. So i'm gonna go ten ten and seven at the bare minimum possibly lebanon states. But i'll be conservative. I'll say ten and seven I think mayfield play well. I know they're not going to rely olmec as much as maybe some of the other quarterbacks but they're going to run the football i believe they're going to be a top five running team and everything they do is going to be predded gonna be set up the running game so they're gonna be heavy play action. They went to the to tidy. As they went and got a hindrance free agency got john newsouth upgraded the wide receiver position. I think decide nelson born. Yeah so they got some weapons. I man i still like jacoby. Myers i like here tomorrow. Watching the better he gets. I really liked jacoby. Myers in so with that being said skipped. I'm gonna say they go tunas seven and they make the playoffs.

I still haven't figured out why the giants are doing joint practices in foxborough when the game is going to be held in in new jersey. But that was a joe. Judge bill belichick decision and so be it. Just you know the other thing to look forward to this week or to be aware of this week. Is that the giants do have to trim their roster to eighty players by tuesday afternoon. "In the the new quarterbacks the young guy as we go this is stylistically reversed. You are theoretically going to have a more expensive passing offense with mac jones and your campaign because you need to have a more expensive passing offense that jones because running element is now gone. That is more complicated than installing saying okay. Well we're gonna mix in a package. That is you know. Serve wildcat plus type of thing with our young of raw mobile quarterback matt jones the opposite so what this is mack. Jones is kind of a kind of throwback prospect anyway and we'll see how it works out in the long run but i don't i think it's really interesting. The thought of trying to install sort of bits and pieces and look maybe mac jones at this point is basically on the same level as cam newton cam. Obviously we've seen has had the years as a passer. He's been the league for a long time. So maybe on the same way. But i think it's interesting to think how they are going to Potentially sprinkle in mack jones and look. This is visiting that. They have coaches that solve problems and I will be interesting to see. They solve these problems. And i will be willing to just throw my tapes and criticisms fm. Jimmy Garoppolo Is Reportedly ‘Plan A’ For Patriots At Quarterback
"So much has been made about the potential of a reunion between jimmy g. and bill be in new england. The forty nine. A quarterback is under contract for two more seasons but new england needs a quarterback and they may look to trade for garappolo that is according to a very interesting piece. That are mike. Reese put together over the weekend who covers the patriots for so well and he gets up with us earlier today. Mike for those who did not read. It gives us a sense of your thinking on the possibilities. Here of jimmy g. Coming back to foxborough so good morning green. I would say as a reporter covering the team there so much secrecy around the patriots quarterback plans so i was asking myself the question. What do i know for fact and for fact. What i know is that the patriots bill. Belichick he holds jimmy garoppolo in such high regard. And it's one thing for me to say it. But i could actually show it to you. I mean there was a picture after the forty niners handed the patriots their worst home loss in two decades under bill belichick. We're bill belichick. Steve on the field to talk with jimmy garoppolo and josh mcdaniels. The offensive coordinator was standing nearby for his. Turn to talk to jimmy garoppolo. So the point. Is this screening. If the patriots believe jimmy garoppolo is their plan a and the big gap to plan b. Now is the time for them to at least test. The forty niners commitment to jimmy g. and so then. That begets the obvious next question which is if they do decide to your point that that's what they wanna do. How do they get it done. Well got to give credit to michael lombardi. The longtime nfl front office man who was here with the patriots when the patriots drafted garoppolo in two thousand and fourteen on his podcast. The gm shuffle. He said how about sam darnold going from the jets to the forty niners who in turn with then trade jimmy garoppolo in a situation controlled by garoppolo. 'cause he has a no trade clause and you saw the respect. There was mutual between the patriots and garoppolo. Well you'd think jimmy might like the idea of a homecoming in that scenario greenie. That could work for everyone. The forty niners would pick up a lot of cap space in that exchange. The patriots would get their quarterback through they respect so much in the jets. Your jets would probably take a quarterback at number two which might be their preference anyway.

I was happy when i first heard about a huge Distribution center in gillette stadium But just the you know the look it it makes sense to. I think they were talking about incorrect me wrong about five thousand vaccines day. That's the goal. The goal is to go indeed But my concern was its location. You know for You know someone like me and my family the same family. Since i'm a healthcare worker. I get it differently but you know to go to foxborough to receive it. It's it's sort of one of those You know what a drag to have dry there but for my patients and chelsea most a physician for some people in the surrounding communities that is quite a barrier. You know many of them don't have cars Or and they also don't often don't work jobs. They have the flexibility to take off. Belichick reaches milestone as Patriots top Raiders 36-20
"Everyone is time for the bonus episode postgame recap for Vegas Nation podcast. I'm your host Heidi Fang and I'm joined with our readers writers, Ed Greenie, Adam. Hill we're going to break down what happened here in the Raiders Lost Thirty six to twenty against the New England Patriots here Gillette Stadium in Foxborough at an ir up in the press box Adam back in Vegas a from my vantage point it was. A lot of mistakes made by the raiders, which is something you can't do against the bill belichick coach team. So we're GONNA get all into that here but I I want to remind everybody that we are brought to you by Salmon Ash, indeed visa and also favor. So make sure to subscribe wherever you're listening and what was your first take on what you saw out in the field today with the raiders. You're right. They did everything you can't do and win on the road or anywhere turn the ball over three times. Once rent on. Didn't protect car when they were driving. Me fumbled the Fumble Alina Game Matter Games already overby fumbled the end zone. In the second half, they just wore down defensively I actually done the first thirty minutes be interested at him. I think thought the first thirty minutes they played. As good. A defense as they haven't a while let's be honest. Thirteen points here cam help them a lot. He wasn't any third, but they were down on the second Apple Sikhism Derek. Carr in the offense couldn't stand field. He gave up two hundred and fifty yards total rushing late Sony Michelle when expert in its players per talking, you know these of League so they were down and they just couldn't match. Match up. So a bad game they printed everything you can do and what on the road so Adam how much in fact that these running bags like just through the defense offered their game because I don't think they were looking to contain the likes of three different running backs in this one I think they prepared to contain Cam Newton? What was your thoughts on the running game? I think I was definitely a part of it and I think there was definitely adjustments made. By the Patriots coaching staff because as as ED put out for the first half of the, Patriots were able to run the ball somewhat. But I thought a it wasn't. There wasn't those explosive plays. There wasn't those big plays downfield and it was a kind of picking up some yards here. They're moving the ball effectively but not really gashing the raiders defense and then. They figured out something in the run game after halftime and I'll be interested to find out the later in the week. Interested to get the the all twenty two film comes out like Tuesday. Look a little what happened but I think just at first glance without really looking into what they were doing on the line maybe differently. They definitely started to go to some more cutback plays where they I thought really were able to take advantage of some over pursuit of the writer side in particular from Jonathan Abram, who you know, we know what he can do. In terms just flying around offensively and having people would kind of sending a message for that defense but at the same time. You can use that aggression against him and I think the Patriots kind of figure that out a little bit and it really hit him with a big plays on a place where he got into the gap, he was near the bulk area but just couldn't make up Adams exactly right and and they're going to have to here's the thing about a player John Neighbor might think they love is aggressiveness in his hitting all that he's got a swagger Jim and I. Hate to say this, but sometimes, you just have to you have to balance that it's hard to tell a guy like that. Don't play this way but Adams wait we should for resod against Christian McCaffrey, over pursues too much when you take the battling new pursue Sunny Michelle Christian McCaffrey, they're gonNA come back will go so Yeah. They just didn't play the run wellness second atoms right they adjusted and you have to give Michelle credit like I said when you go For, an average of thirteen yards of Kerry and I don't know if he's ever average per carry more than seven in a games and you also have saved in job I am. But they did they didn't play offensively were out of rhythm Waller. We'll talk about that I know atoms writing thoughts. Darren WELLM was non factor when you get a lot of good at the bill Belgium at he talked about. How good daring waller as well. Guess what he must have died because they ran every defense coverage double team run in stem and stopped him. So atom I know you you wrote about this mean, what did you hear the game to her? How they? You know bottle up there wall I thought it was a group effort I. think that's what of expected to hear from the Patriots Bill. Belichick obviously didn't go into detail about what he did. I think it was just a lot of deception what they were doing offensively disguising it and Bella check pointed out. Hey, it wasn't somebody covering him necessarily a lot of zone. We played a lot of you know bracket coverage a lot of. Men under there was a lot of different things. Defensively. On Waller but I think it was more just about the looks of they're giving up the line and never letting the raiders. No. Before the play what kind of coverage is GonNa be on Waller? Want Credit Anybody I. Think mccourty would be the one that you would like added. Say. Devin mccourty that Dinnie. Tremendous job on him but it was a little bit of everybody kind of in the mixer.

You have to bet right now. Bad Online. We'll hear about them in just a second go on Ben Online. Who Are you picking in the AFC right now? Well. Let's really break down the Patriots you know we're talking about. What's going to happen now that Brady's gone? How many! Hall of Famer Potential Hall of Famer and Hall of famers and Pro Bowlers. Have left the Patriots in the last two decades. Many men meant. Yes, that's all they do. All they do is turn over personnel or for the Sidebar to that is guys. Get thrown money by other by the other thirty one teams. I'll go hill. Replicate what he did in new, England is like no, no, there's some weird Voodoo that goes on up in Foxborough. That does not translate down the Tennessee or Texas or wherever else you're talking about right, so we're not talk. You know we're not talking about. What are the dolphins going to do without Dan Marino. Because they've changed show so much personnel on the offensive and defensive side of the ball over the last twenty years that if there's any team that is poised to turn over one guy now, he's the quarterback. Obviously, that's a super important job, but if anyone has proven that, they can swap one guy out for another guy, it's the Patriots. Of Foreign. Any other organization. And proof of that for any of the cynics out there, they're ignoring I know. It was a limited sample size, but Jimmy G. One every game he ever played Jacoby perset was was good as well when he had the takeover for Brady. Yeah, it's a and you know for what it's worth. Three BLEDSOE came in way back when at the start of the Millennium and beat the steelers in in Heinz field when Brady got hurt, so there's plenty of track record that you're going to be able to plug qb in there and succeed. It is interesting though that given the way Brady plays versus the way that same position and everything else. Else but wildly different way, but people say well how how CAM GONNA fit into that New England system. Have you watched the Patriots play? They don't do the same thing weekend week out. They always change it. They're obviously GONNA change what they do to accommodate number one now.

Tom vs. Team: Why Brady is Moving On
"Well amidst everything happening in the world. Right now Tom Brady singlehandedly. Wrestle control of the new cycle and in the process basically gave us in sports media a miniature stimulus package by announcing that. He's leaving the New England patriots. Seth you have covered Brady forever. You've been to his house. You've covered this team for a while. What was your initial reaction to today's news? I think it's been in the works for a long time. I think it's been in the works since training camp and I think that people just didn't want to believe it New England fans didn't want to believe it some media members didn't believe it. Even people close to Tom. Brady didn't want to believe it. Even the people who did believe it in some ways didn't WanNa believe it and yet here we are I should note here that all season long says McCain has been texting me. I think this happened. I think this is going to happen. And I've written back really come on really stuff so you were right and here. We are and as you mentioned not. Everything's been roses in New England for quite a while now and we'll get to that but until I think this season. It didn't seem realistic to a lot of people that he would actually leave. So let's go back to the beginning of the year. When did that start change? Well I think that he almost left training camp because he was so frustrated about the contract negotiations that were going on with the Patriots for years. Now he is wanted a commitment and he has said with every ounce of sincerity that he wants to play until he's forty five years old and I think there's a part of him that felt like he had earned that commitment from the New England patriots but in lieu of that. He just wanted clarity. If you don't want me here fine I'll move on but you have to let me know and in the fall of eighteen. He signed what was termed at the time. As a two year extension was not an extension it was essentially five million dollars in bonuses that he never hit and then this year he entered the year as fifteen million dollar quarterback on the books which is astounding in August. He and his camp were in negotiations with the Patriots again. They were not interested in committing beyond a year to him and again reportedly he almost left training camp because he was so frustrated about it but when he finally did commit to playing and sign the deal he said all along that he was just an employee there. I show up and do my job. I'm an employee like everyone else. I'M GONNA show this week to do the best. I can do a quarterback when he said I'm just an employee here that was a little bit different and everybody always knew that even though Tom Brady could say he was a player just a player. Everyone knew that he was Tom Brady. Everyone knew that he could talk to. Robert Kraft whenever he wanted to. Everybody knew he go to Robert. Kraft's house whenever he wanted to so. It was always a little ridiculous that he would say that. I find your point about him saying. I'm just an employ really interesting because everybody knows that bill belichick is fairly ruthless. Really when it comes to you know how he manages personnel in his job is GM. He will move on from a star a legend right away but it was always the assumption. Tom Brady was above that he was not just an employee. He wasn't just any player to ballot. Check do you think that changed at some point recently or do you think that's always been the case? I think it's always been the case but I think what changed was Tom's perspective. I think the assumption was that it was Bella. Check who would be willing to move on from Brady and cut or trade him. Even though we all knew that Robert Kraft was never gonNa let him cut or trade. Tom Brady unless things got so bad that he had no choice to do it. I think there was always the presumption that Tom Brady wanted to retire a Patriot and again the past couple of years. There's been a lot of turmoil in the building. Twenty years is a long time to spend working so closely with a ruthlessly driven coach like bill. Belichick there's one assistant who told me working one year with bill. We'll take a year off your life and Tom's been in that system for a long time and he's tired he wants to do something new. I think that's were Brady. Decided to take control of his story and changed things Brady starts talking about himself as an employee and I think this sense of unease sets in did that persist throughout the twenty nine thousand nine season. He's a professional bill. Belichick said professional once. They're they're they're going to do everything they can to win every week but the season for the Patriots was weird season. It was a weird season because their offense didn't pull its weight for the entire year and that's very rare especially the last half of Brady's career with the patriots as they become they become so much of a pass. Heavy offense dominated team you know. Obviously they had Antonio Brown pretty was very excited to play with him. They light up the dolphins with Brown in the lineup. Antonio Brown had been accused of sexual assault then. A sports illustrated article comes out detailing. All kinds of new allegations and Robert Kraft who says he doesn't involve himself in personnel and football decisions makes a decision organizationally that they're gonNA move on from him. Brady was very upset about that and I think bill belichick was upset about it too. They wanted to see what the offense could do with Brown and so I think that's one of those sort of hidden moments from the season that I think ends up becoming a bigger deal than it was because after that the New England Patriots is here without Rob Gronkowski. Just couldn't get a receiver as open as they were accustomed to in the past. And so the offense just didn't play very well into remember at one point in the season. It looks like the Patriots were. They were talking about going undefeated again and then they lose to Miami in the last game of the season at home and then they come out against the titans in the in the wildcard round of the playoffs. The Patriots were beaten up for most of the game and yet late in the game. The Patriots got the ball back and it just looked like they were going to recapture the magic. The magic that were so accustomed to seeing from Tom Brady. He hit a pass for about twenty yards. Got a little bit of breathing room and then the drive just stalled and on second down Brady threw outside of Julian Edelman white behind Brady Bunch. Before it was an out route join Dorset Britain dropped back. It was a route two oldest football. It's a route that these guys have run so many times over the years short set walks in on the side at the forty five yard line turning to run an element dropped the ball and even though that's not when the game ended it felt like the game ended right there. You could feel the air. Go Out of the stadium. You could feel the wind. Go out the New England patriots sideline it just felt that after twenty years after all those super bowls after winning and losing some of the greatest games in NFL history. This run was over. That's the way it felt to me. Tennessee titans have come into foxborough and defeated. Tom Brady and the pats twenty to thirteen in his wildcard. Rob You were there. What was brady like in the aftermath? I've seen Tom Brady. After a lot of losses I've seen him after a lot of season ending losses. He looks physically ill. After losing a game that ends their season but against the titans after losing game ended their season this year. He seemed different. Usually Tom waits a long time. The game to come to the podium and granted the game ended late but he came out of the locker room like a hurricane and he got to the podium and was in no rush to leave. He sat he chatted. There's nobody who had a better career I would say to me. I just being with them so I'm very blessed and I don't know what the future looks like so I'm not going to predict it so I wish you'd want tonight and We should done a lot of things better over the course season but we just tend to get the job done. It was just a different vibe that he put out there that I've ever seen before and when he left and he walked out. He just had a vibe that he was over it he was done.
