"Part of our history with their impact and influence key moments in sports have helped shape. He'll and inspire. It has been said that. I have two alternatives. Either go to jail. Go jarman but i would like to say that Here's another alternative that alternatives justice. I'm doc rivers in proud to present a new podcast documentary series called. It said sports. I guide you through six of the most impactful and timeless speeches in sports history. The question is already been answered. Should we be here. Yes listen and follow. It was said sports. A documentary podcast presentation of shining city audio. See thirteen originals. And jon meacham studio available now wherever you listen to your podcast when you look back akib on On the games that you've done what. What do you want to improve on. And i imagine like maybe a big thing is just reps right because like ultimately you really haven't done a ton of games compared to most other analysts and i'm sure you've already found you know you're better game three then game one better game game. Three definitely definitely risk. Man i i think as i get more comfortable i'll get better at it but I definitely want to polish up my lingo. I'm gonna take the man's in a out of there. I wanna pronunciation a little bit better on change. Who i am but when i hear myself on tv. I'm like damn where's my. Where's my tongue. When i'm sandy's s words like i'm saying i just hear how i talk on tv. I hear it might just my dialect. So is little small areas that will be cleaned up on our next game and it is still be the same. I keep to leave but just a little more. Podcast we'll take one more two more in a row for you here i keep. How is Doing podcasts helped you and Is it just a question of just a being asked questions Being in the position where you gotta interview people but you got a couple of pockets out there. That people seem to like definitely. I think it definitely helped me. Just being on the spot am talking. You talking on Interviews as a player who carried how we talk at that point. I was player right. So you start to do the podcast. Your face gets erased out of. I was just your voice. You know so you gonna hear yourself in. You hear the words that you say thousand times the other the in i think just the speaking out loud speaking in public answering questions being being on a spot on spot half in the asir questions. That's how that's how. I'll be helped out. Nobles gus How does it does your college football schedule. Like is it set up in a way where you're doing. Nfl games on weeks. You would normally not do college football or are there games. Where you're going straight after saturday's Soon call to whatever the nfl site is near the first three for sure. I got nebraska oklahoma on saturday. And then i hop on the plane and head to arizona so we could do the vikings in the cardinals and the following week. I have notre dame and constant chicago. And then we have arizona at jackson bill the next day and then might have i. I can't remember what i think. We may go to michigan wisconsin and then detroit chicago in chicago. That here's a here's a here's the reason i ask this. I know there's a lot of young people who listen to this podcast. You may be in college. Who want to go into broadcasting. Obviously just getting that. You know. I can get access to a gus johnson and so when you are preparing us for two different sports. Two different sets of four different sets rosters over forty eight hour period. What's your process do you are you working. Are you researching and prepping both games at the same time or do you do like an abbreviated. Prep once the college games over till game. Time for the nfl. For example. i've been here for the past. I got here on saturday night. After oregon oklahoma oregon ohio state so i watch all a bunch of nfl games on sunday. And then all monday. I watch the cardinals and the vikings play cardinals play tennessee on the role. Vikings play cincinnati on the road and then last night. I started my nfl board. I want to get the nfl stuff done early in the week. When i hit the college town you know i can. All my focus is gonna be on the college game and putting a the boards and the roster together. But i'm you know you do it at all at the same time to be honest with you but it's not a job. It's fun i love it. It's it's it's an incredible opportunity to credible thing to do. And it's probably something that i would do for free. I mean i do this stuff for free. Because i was a fan and i was a journalism student when i was in college so to to to be able to do two games in two days i think is just a great great job to have and it's my job and it's it's my love it's my passion it's a it's just it's an embarrassment of riches to me so it's not. It's not that kind of work. I mean i'm not working in the coal mine or i'm not working at the plant or steel mill or i'm not a doctor or a nurse that's on your feet all day. You know. i'm i'm i'm a. I'm a real real lucky due to have an opportunity to to watch football and there are a lot of people out there in this world that love football so football lovers understand that this is. This is a great great opportunity. I'm very blessed. I got a bunch of gratitude to the people at fox. Forgive me this opportunity to not only do these games with the work with my nephew. Keep doubling. You're ready to get back into yoga. See order.

"What was going through your mind when you made such and such and how does this kind of sector way. You're gonna feel the next several days knowing that this Out of your hands rather than a man. That was a dumb move. Why did you do it right like it's just one of those things. You have to understand amulet much time. Or how much do you think about the questions. You ask or the prep-work you put in going into an interview. Because i feel like there's a lot of times where kind of what you were just saying. It's very easy to ask the easy questions. Or as i like to call him the lazy questions. So how much time do you put into wanting to be different really sitting down and thinking about how you want to ask something and just not again not always going for the easy stuff or the stuff that's been asked before right and that's a four because that's the college the low hanging fruit or you call. It is always right there. And you don't want because these guys answer the same questions over and over and especially as drivers. I mean these guys have been doing interviews since they were kids. It's one of the sports work. You're almost trained from the youngest age. Be able to do an interview because he got say. This plug my sponsor plug my team. Do this do that. That these guys have heard it all set it all. It's point where yet you could ask the normal question that's there or you can kind of think about it and trying to listen an answer. That's different than what they might be asked to kind of. Make them thinking kind of take back because that's when get more of the real and genuine answers. A driver doesn't automatically go to their answer and they may stop for a second but like oh. I haven't thought of it that way are oh. That's a good question and they have to take seconds of big rather than going with right away..

"You could understand the pressure that still might be in that scenario. Because you've been in the situation where you're like that when your claim sports is a kid we don't like oh no like if we don't get this win we're gonna miss the postseason. You understand the jitters in the butterflies going into something that matters so much new understand what. It's like the work as a team. You understand what it's like to kind of. Let your team down with so many different things that go into it that you've been understand from a sports level of just being a part of it. You understand what. It's like to be kind of a locker room on. Its eve in a pressure situation. I think all of that is in oregon. So that when you do talk to these athletes. I think it's so crucial to that. Be like a wide. You performed ella. What apple you can ask it away. That's like smarter than that because you have to understand. It's not like they went out and perform on purpose. Things happen people get nervous. People clam up incidents hat. People get desperate in situations. You understand that. Desperation as the y. Like someone might make a move a little bit dangerous to try and pass another car or unintentionally take out their teammate like happening the daytona five hundred because last year because is talked about this. This whole entire career is the one thing he wants to win. Is the daytona five hundred. Disol- window so that went on the outside you'd like. How could you wrecks your teammate joel. A gal in that situation will. Hey this is the biggest race in our or and my whole career has been trying to win this thing. So i saw this window and i took it and i did want to wreck my guy but i might not have this chance again. It also like you kind of understand you could think in breakdown all these things. So that's been in a situation. That's you explain that. So much better than i asked it so i understood what the question my others will sometimes just positive by now but you knew exactly what i was saying because you mentioned understanding the competitive nature. And that's what i was going for another analogy that i always tell people is not an analogy but when a driver or team gets upset or they act a certain way many people immediately think of kyle busch and everybody knows i'll gets upset right. I never want to be the person that criticizes a driver or a team for how they act in a moment. Because i always tell people i can't criticize or be the person that says whether that's right or wrong when i probably would act the same way because again i have that athletes mentality. I am a very competitive person again. I was never a pro but as you said you under the competitive nature and even being younger and playing sports so so who am i. Who are any of us. Criticize the driver right when they get out in our man. Yeah i always think of in this firms like just to tell any person. Let's say like you are doing your job and maybe you have a big time presentation or anything. That has to do what you do for a profession. One of the weirdest things that we do as journalists is literally. Stick a might in someone's face seconds after they fail innocence. And how would you like your profession. If right after a sales pitch you try lan a client and you make a mistake in bill lamb that client and a couple minutes after someone is asking you like always your say this light Failed to convince them to take your business..

"Like what else do you want to do. I didn't necessarily go to like a journalist. School villanova's why want from the grad and their specialties are business nursing and Engineer so being a major was kind of like the cop out there because like all the athletes were calm majors. So am i. My friends always be like you going to do communications but got talk for other things like well i do. I'll talk for a living. But it was just funny for that to kind of be where i went. But they did offer. I was accommodate your specializing in public relations and journalism and they did have broadcast classes. So al-sabra gate kind of background in it and get enough to get into syracuse. So you know kinda worked out in the end anyway so you said that was in high school that you kind of realized that you needed to figure something out so again. We're were so alike josh. Because i was the same way it was high school for me. That's very funny..

"Just worked out that they ended up on. Tv but sports doing it for a profession. I would be watching consuming it anyway so it just kinda perfect said. It's almost like we do something you love. you know. it sounds so cliche but you never really worked a day in your life. You're able to do that. So i gotta. I got pretty lucky. I agree with that. I i've heard that saying. And i like it very much. It's very much the same thing. It doesn't feel like work when you say they're about thinking you were going to go into the print side of things not necessarily tv. What was the deciding factor. Because that's two different jobs to different segments of the population going from print. Tv so how did you end up in. Tv was kind of funny. Because i had an internship when i was sought mar joann was a junior probably junior in college news and just general. Simon wasn't sports. So you of out. Writing articles and stuff printed which is really cool but doing that kind of steam where the newspaper industry has gone. It's not like blooming at that point. This was two thousand seven or eighty. I was just kinda like. I don't think this is it. I don't think this is gonna work out and then going into my senior year. It was right around a terrible time for the market Graduating in old nine and there just weren't jobs gives just a bad time for everybody no matter the industry so kind of had to make a decision do i just go out into the workforce in hopes. Something happens or do i give another shot at something else in my parents with alonso. Okay we know you love journals. Have you ever thought about china do. Tv gave pipedream. That's not gonna happen. And they were just like encouraged me to give it a shot so like i plied. Gre's at a terrible. But the essay portion. I knocked out of the park. Which got me into syracuse new house program. Kinda the rest is history. Went there got the training. I needed to get into the business. And it's funny because my first job was even in sports. I was general. Simon news reporter for my first station which is an nbc affiliate in south jersey for like a year and a half an all. Ultra that. I knew still. I wanted to get sports. But i just had a foot in the door so it was like all right. This is it. Let me use this to my advantage and get a wannabe. So that was kind of a. It's so funny. Because i feel like i relate to so many people when i do interviews with fellow media members because it seems like there's a common theme which is we're all vision or all determined on what we want to do and i say that because i'm listening to you talk about how sports was the goal in on. Just get your foot in the door. Because i was very much the same way where i don't have a ton of experience covering other things because it was always sports or in my case it was always nascar so it sounds like you did kind of other assignments for these places but you're more experienced in the sports world. Exactly that was like all right at may have take a detour here. How does this get me back to. Here was just like one of those things whereas all i know where i'm trying to get our i may have to take a left turn on year.

"Gordon going to the fame. You want ten quick minutes with them. Oh sure i remember. Being on like the red carpet for was inducted into the hall of fame. And we were just gonna do kind of the group interview with him and things were running behi- and was like moving his way down the red carpet justice next to me and i just was like. Hey jeff like literally about to go live. Can you just do a quick live interview with me. And is again sure went up and i was just like really you know a trend happen anywhere else. So it's it's stuff like that. It just makes sport really awesome really cool for me to be a part of. We are fellow new jersey native. So i think we bonded over that the first few times that i did find so i'm gonna jump around here because since you brought it up being a new jersey native. How exactly did you land. Charlotte was that a job. Opportunity coming down here because it's weird. I feel like when people hear new like there's a lot of northerners in new jersey that come southall sudden. I need didn't know what your story. Yes oh charlotte wasn't on my radar until a job. Opportunity came about so before. I came down here. House working in upstate. New york in albany new york for three years on the weekends sports thing with the abc affiliate of there. And i remember my agent reached out just like you know charlotte as opening sentence Were in. They're interested in you and before that you know like i was like i don't have random charlotte like what are we. Talk about northeast guys through group but then it just. I came down here. I interviewed for the job. And it just kinda worked so that was kinda the reason i came down here and then you come to realize how. Many people for the northeast migraines is charlotte. It's kinda crazy it is it is. It makes me laugh. I'm trying to get my parents. Do the same thing i'm like. Yeah everybody comes down here. it's cheaper it's nicer. You need to get on the bandwagon here because everybody comes down here so in talking about your former jobs. But i did see a few of them that were listed in your previous biographies and you mentioned there about being with a new york station. I think you did something in new jersey as well. Come down here. Fox forty six. Now you're with of course fox sports so it seems like sports was always the thing for you right and and i believe you're also a former athlete so sports has always been josh's life right yet it has been. I thought when i was kid you know played sports in high school. I played soccer football. Not like what football side. But you know those kind of overlap. But i played basketball soccer ranch track and then play any division on or anything my dad. But i'll just play in club and intramural college and appoint i realized i wasn't going get like foot six like i bought. I was going to be the professional athlete. So i kinda had it but like sports have always been a big part of my life and i knew i wasn't going to be a professional athlete but i wanted to be somehow involved. I always loved journalism as a kid. I was gonna tv route. I thought i was gonna do originalism and all that but it..

"The field of dreams game we previewed it on thursday's episode but man what a success this was for major league baseball. Trevor Lawrence Reaffirms His Dedication to Football
"Controversy that broke out this week. I mean, the kind of stuff that when you really think about it could affect opinions. Apparently, Trevor Laurence doesn't have it ship on his shoulder. Now, um, let's think about the absurdity of this for just a moment, Miss all came from a Sports Illustrated article. In which basically I guess if you really wanted to read into it, which A lot of you sure did. Kind of thought that this questioned the overall passion. For Trevor, Laurence and football and I quote It's not like I need this for my life to be okay. I want to do it because I want to be the best I can be. I want to maximize my potential. Who wouldn't want to You kind of wasted if you know. He added. Whenever asked about Maintaining a healthy attitude without finding extra motivation in every actual or perceived slider. Disrespect. Dr Lawrence said. Hard to explain that because I want people to know that I'm a passionate guy and I'm passionate about what I do, and it's really important to me. But Don't have this huge chip on my shoulder. Don't have this huge and ship that everyone's out to get me and I'm not trying to prove everybody wrong. I just don't have that I can't manufacture that. I don't want to. I think that's unhealthy. To a certain extent. Just always thinking that you've got to prove somebody wrong. You've got to doom or you've got to be better. By the way, when I first read that I kind of thought that's a shot of Baker Mayfield. I'm just being honest. That's the first thing that came to mind because what is my man? What a six always have in Cleveland. He got chip on his shoulder. And it might even be manufactured, but he is always He is always going to play up the fact that he's being disrespected

"Wonder Goes Surgery tomorrow to re player repair a thorn planter plate in his foot. Also known his turf toe. The rehab will be for several months. Rehab for Nick, right will be for several years, perhaps after what happened with the Kansas City Chiefs and Nick right now known as Nick Wrong this week, co host of First things first on Fox Sports one Joins us on the program. Well, refresh my memory. What were you saying about the chief's on Friday going into the Super Bowl? I don't know. If you actually need your memory refreshed and I saw the beginning of yesterday's show. You seem to remember it vividly. Just a day ago, I I have the shocking take that the Chiefs would win. Either shocking take that The best offense in the league over the last three years would continue to function and I was wrong. And, you know, I I understand that this is the first time and you're what is it at this 30.65 year broadcasting career that you've ever had someone having incorrect prediction, so I'm surprised a little bit. You're probably thinking, Oh, man, he is coming back when they don't know they restructured his 24 plus million dollar contract down to the veteran's minimum of like a million and change. Why would they do that? Well because he's going to retire. And so that way it opens up that cap space and they've got that available and ready so that they sort of know where they're at. And so that, so that was just a sign an indication that Drew Brees. He's done there already, you know, going through the motions, and it's over. Is anybody surprised that Drew Brees because also, Sean Payton said he expects a for a decision from Drew Brees next week. Anybody all that surprised that Drew Brees is waiting until after the Super Bowl to make his decision on his retirement?

"It's such a huge advantage for the wrong road team So it's still a factor. I in the postseason this year. Correct factor that row teams are helped so much in post even more postseason than regular season. Yeah i think the rams go into green bay. that's that's a home field advantage for green bay because of the conditions. But they're not they're not having to deal with the the twelfth man in the crowd and and how that affects communication lines so there there's other than the weather Green bay or northern cities. Don't see much of an advantage. The cowboys would have had one. Had they been able to get in. Just because they're they're stadiums have fall but some some places where aloun fans But not to the extent that it's gonna affect on the field With communicates. I just remember what i wanted to ask you about. Brady was even going back. A little bit Because you talk about you know less. Your new england wasn't a great year for tom and then obviously issues especially the second half of this year. He's been outstanding. And there's always a thing with quarterbacks about you know how. How important are the weapons. So tom had no weapons in new england all issue. Now he's got a ton of weapons. We're seeing it now even with a with a rookie. Second year with a lot of people are saying to had no weapons and that's why people are down on him and it's not as a quarterback. Where do you stand on how important the weapons are album. You just doesn't. It doesn't do you any good to have a tom brady. If you don't have guys that can get open and he can get the ball to I think for for someone like tom and even for drew when you talk about guys enter into their forties. It's even more important to have the right kinds of players that can create separation early especially for guys that aren't very mobile You know that becomes a paramount. But i think i think more and more personnel people have understood it because the games become more offensive. And so with that. There's been more resources on the offensive side of the ball and so more and more teams have that. Now i say that green bay of course with aaron rodgers. It really speaks a lot to lafleur floors the play caller and the coordinator and then and then of course aaron rodgers that they don't have when you compare their supporting cast up against some of the others not taking anything away. He's got davante adams and got some good running backs in that but but relatively speaking don't don't have Some of the skill players that some of these other teams do but yet they're moving the football very effectively doing a lot of really great things..

"Re lls has a show called breaking the band and it's all about how bands break up famous bands and widen broke up but they use actors as as as actress to Rian like to night the. Dude it's the Trashier TV. It's so good when Eddie van Halen died they ran the van Halen one and it was amazing about how David, Lee? Roth. And Sammy? Hager. This and I. and. I watched the journey one I watched the Beatles one I watched a led Zeppelin on on a network I didn't know existed right reels network are e L Z, and then if there's a third show because these are the recommendations you come into Jimmy China's podcast where you want to hear my love on the spectrum and my breaking the band the good ones so far. I got into a show with my wife. It's it's not breaking bad and it's not madman. This show is called little fires everywhere. It's on Hulu. Now, the one thing that concerns me about that is that my fifteen year old niece watches that show so is she watching something inappropriate or you guys watching something that's for younger people Jimmy it's set in nineteen ninety seven. Okay and it is dripping in the style. Okay dripping I'm talking soundtrack wardrobe. Stars Reese Witherspoon in our Guy Joshua Jackson who loved and mighty. Greek. Yeah. From the creek the Creek Green. Creek is coming Netflix. So is it everyone loves their Vanderbeek? I'm more Jackson Guy. Jackson and and then. Kelly Kerry Washington I'm going blank. Homes no you homes, Michelle Williams. Talking is it Carrie Washington Kelly Washington who's in scary Washington is on scandal? Yes. She's the lead. In this thing these are three heavy hitters. The kid actors are incredible. Little Fires Everywhere It's one thousand nine hundred ninety seven Shaker Heights. Ohio. A small town in Ohio and there is a a couple of things that happened in the town but it goes back and forth time and it's it's your it's your nineteen ninety seven nostalgia that if you want to hear. A little. Alanis Morissette if you want to hear a little garbage, I'm only happy when it rains, this is the soundtrack to the show and the acting thing tasks out say it gets some parts of like this writing's terrible and then actually the show's really good. I, like it. So I'm GONNA throw that one there little fires again. So this is this is a good way to end this since you mentioned a Lantis you and a show about nineteen ninety-seven and all the nostalgia the ringer I think it was last week put out. Asking people. But the three most definitive songs of the nineties were. Wow. I. So I only saw it because Greg Shinsegae who covers the NHL. NHL FOR ESPN longtime blogger and probably the best that covering NHL he tweeted he had named. Smells like Teen Spirit, which I thought was obvious one. To you is that I know it reminds us. Cultural Significance. Is One of your favorite song that. Song. Nirvana no, it's not one of my favorites but I think it is one of the definitive songs of the nineties. But he also mentioned. He went with TLC and he mentioned creep and I had responded to him and said, we're needed free over waterfall. So if you had three definitive songs of the nineties are your three favorite ninety songs, I it's I hate when people ask me these questions on the spot because you always something and you have to get but. He think his other one was Britney. I mean, it's fair..

"It and everybody knew the ending to that, but. you know for these games? It's like okay. Yeah Yankees Red. SOx Awesome. Oh, three or four all these great years. But. We know how they end and. Seeing fresh stuff is fun and it. It's also like a mental and emotional cue that. Maybe, we're all starting to kind of get back to normal and. So. I think people are thirsty for at. That's why I was hoping. Baseball would start earlier. They couldn't come together on a deal, but it starts this week and I'm I'm thinking. I listen I'm expecting big numbers and I think like you said Thursday, but you'll have the fact that people can't go to game, so they'd have to watch him on TV so that fifty thousand people right exact. And those people, Yup, exactly and. And I think what baseball is going for. At least early on I think for the first few weeks at least as the fringe fan is going to watch to see. I don't WanNa. There's going to be sound like a negative analogy. I don't mean to be a negative analogy, but it is sort of the train wreck car wreck on the side of the road. Thing because you don't know what it's like with no fans in the stands or the fake crowd noise or the players can't high five each other. The balls can't be touched. You know so I think that the diehard is always going to be there and then the French fan I think there's a lot of intriguing. Just what the Hell is GonNa. Look like I agree. I completely agree and even yeah. I think fringe fan, just seeing something that's fresh and competitive. Will will come under the tent to, but it's funny. I was reading articles today about the Yankees. Exhibition game with the Phillies and reading about how many players came over? To D gregorious and gave him fist, bombs, handshakes and hugs. And, I'm reading that gone. We'll okay, but after somebody hits a game winning home run, they're to phantom high five and nobody can spit and. The line meanders all over the place, but you know I I. I'm the same way so for those fringe. Fans I. Totally get it. I'm the same way I can't wait to see how it all comes together. That can't wait to watch a game. And there was one team is over the weekend. I don't pirated Tiger I. Don't remember was, but after a win instead the line the line with the high five. They did the line, but they tapped. Feet. Oh, so people are getting creative in major league baseball. Yeah that that's going to be the next things how these guys figure out a way to get creative to celebrate and I can't wait to watch it and Randy Moss and I are going to start a reality show on Fox. We're GONNA grade their celebration. I walk off should definitely be interesting. Is there any as the voice of baseball and the face of Fox's or anything? You do about the blackout rule? It should not be happening this year. Baseball is everything happening. People pissed off already about it. Because I tweeted earlier right before we started this podcast, I tweeted that MLB network on Sunday had their second highest ratings ever for an exhibition game with the Yankees emf mets and the game was the second highest ratings ever and New York was blacked out the entire market, so yeah, I I don't understand that I. I is not. Yeah well I've never understood that, and then we're doing games. Really the MLB part of it is always founded me, and then we'll do. Games were non exclusive. And you're doing a game on F s one and you just WanNa. Go got she. Everybody was watching this. Or watching their own telecasts, get right. That's the stuff we played every October, but I don't know I didn't know that so. Thanks for educating. You're welcome, and it's good to have these problems again with baseball finally it looks like coming back so Joe on Saturday will be calling Yankees. Nationals with John smoltz. That's a seven o'clock eastern time. I've lied sure whatever you say. Yeah Well thanks for coming on good luck. STAY SAFE AND Joe On the road. Yes, you're welcome, and it's good to talk to you. "With Zoom. You know I should've I should've brought this up when I asked about you and smalls. You mentioned Rosenthal Tim trying to be like Andy and Howard and listen. What. What's the sideline reporter that you'll be there? Okay? He'll be there. So he'll be. Masked up and socially distanced and which I think is important. You know I I think it's important if John, going to be in Jersey and I'm GONNA be in Denver to have somebody there getting the atmosphere or lack thereof in an empty stadium with the world champion nationals hosts. New York, Yankees which should be. Just packed house and just crazy crazy reactions to anything that happens on the field. Because you know, there'd be a tiny fans there too and. That's obviously not going to be a part of of what we present on Saturday night. Universal D. H.. When he think. Well I could do seminars on all of these things I and I am sorry that I. Keep going on on and on and on, but I I think it makes all the sense in the world in twenty twenty I think. Less stress. You can put on pitching. In, the pitchers the better I think you know with expanded rosters. I think teams are are a little bit in the national. League a little bit more. Prepared to handle it and you know it going in as opposed to. Having Interleague series here in an elite series there where it's like okay, who's going to be the D. H. Today? I think these teams are all prepared now to say okay, that's going to be our D. H.. That's probably going to be our main D H But. I remember when Larussa came over the cardinals I was. I was doing the cardinals day to day. was talking to him. Dave Mackay as Long Time First Base coach and they were like we do not get it. You know they just come from. Why in the hell does anybody watch the pitcher hit? GimMe a D. H.. Give me day, Parker. Give me you know whoever. Dave Henderson anybody named days and and I would love to love to see that as opposed to pitcher and a year into it I kinda. Check back in with them. And they're like no I get it. It's about strategy and it's about think for them, and for Tony a real thinking man. I think. He loved it so much more than just throwing a lineup out there. And waiting for pitching changes so I. I can make the case for both but I I'm a national guy by by birth and I just tend to fall more toward the pitcher being in there, and what that leads to later games, it is weird to me. I mean it seems like most people. Because they like the home runs, they like the offense but I. I don't know how you like that more than the strategy because the strategy gets amazing late in games with that but. I don't want to spend pockets on the because there's another gem that's coming up. The extra innings will start with a runner on second base. Yeah I assume will be extra innings. We'll start with a runner at first and second because you know depending on. What the situation you know you're always gonNA. Try to set up that force ING and it just makes all the sense the world unless you've got a guy up that you can't get the runner old right I think the interesting aengus is. The game has evolved obviously with the shifting. The idea of being able to put the ball where you want to assign a whole or get down or move a guy over. Is Pretty much gone so I get it and and I think it's. It's a good rule. Change Andrian why they're doing it. Yeah, I hear you say that you are I. Know I wanNA I WANNA get out of there. I. Mean It's the tenth inning. Let's go. Let's let's get a conclusion biggest thing I. go ahead that one's hard to that. One's hard to stomach because that to me feels like you are. The word compromising sort of. The game just putting runner on base who did not get there via walk kit or hit? Batsman. Right, but you on, but there's also the reasons why they do it, and I think now more than ever where you can go into the Fifteenth Innings Sixteen thinning I. Think this limits the. Exposure getting into these crazy games. Were then you just get into this stupid roster? Shuffle in your sending guys out, and you're calling fresh arm, and now guys have to be gone to sift in days and they can't come back. I think there's there a lot more positives, but but I think the interesting part of it is. Is You did this in the eighties? It's you're almost guaranteed to have a run crossing the plate and that's that's been the fun hard. Of. Silver linings during this. during this pandemic for me, just going back and watching a lot of those old gains in the MLB network were put up because that's when I fell in love with the game. It wasn't just a cardinal was a god. How good were the mets? My God! How good were the Astra's? There were there was a game. They ran of Nolan Ryan against white good. And you're just looking at this and these lineups, and they have that lineups are still very beck. Guys can get on. Guys get guys over and so in the eighties. Basic getting home, and whether it's a steal whether it's a bond whether it's a fly ball at Rambagh the right side whatever it is. but that part of the game is is gone now for the most part. And last point on this one. I talked to Joe Madden about it a couple years ago. He's like. Telling me. That's the wave of the future. You know this stuff all comes back around and if you put together a team right now had a slugger in the four spot in guys all around that person that could could really run. Teams would know how to defend it because these guys now have played against that a whole generation has come and gone so I, you know I? It remains to be seen how effective that is because I didn't eighteen inning. World Series Game. With the dodgers in the Red Sox. If not for a home run, we'd still be playing because nobody can get on Dick guys over and get him in..

"But yeah I think. Hopefully I'm done this long enough that I can do a game just watching it off a monitor and And there's plenty of stuff to cover I. Don't think we've ever had more things to discuss. you know whether it's. How these teams have traverse the last x number of months after this almost four months layoffs You know even going back I think it's important to kind of go back and remind everybody where free agents are wait. Where's Anthony Rent? Don't is now an angel. He's now with the nationals and he was a big part of them winning at all. Gear Kohl's a Yankee although he'll pitch on Thursday just stuff that I. Think you know can get lost over over time because it's just been awhile since all of us including the play by play guy have been. You know studying and Dreaming About Baseball Absolutely I. In the past few days here when when the game started back up exhibition games. Yankees played few games and you start you know I forgot for a second de Gregori says off the Yankees have an I. Find. You'RE A die. Hard Fan! I mean that that's stuff that you go wait. Yeah, always Philadelphia their managers Joe Girardi. That's right, and then you go. This is all the stuff that I. was on top of six months ago and you know you at least with regard to the baseball offseason. A lot of that stuff happens I'm I'm knee deep in slip on I'm trying to keep up with it on the side. A whole world has been on pause, and you have to go back and. Look at rosters and look at and look at how things have changed since two thousand and nineteen, so a lot has changed. We know that and it's important for us to to cover all of that in around the game on Saturday. Night I wanNA I. Do want to talk to you about football, too, but few more here on the baseball since it's coming back, I'M GONNA. GonNa I'M GONNA. Put you on, you mentioned. You have a lot to talk to and a lot to talk about, and you mentioned all of the changes. I want to just throw some of these changes at you and get the job uptake I know you probably can't just say Oh. That's the biggest piece of garbage rule ever, but if you can let it fly and. I JUST WANNA. Get do my best. Cardboard cutouts of fans in the stands. Do we like that or do not like that you know I? Can't I can honestly say. I can put my hand on a Bible and swear on my kids health that I have really not seen it yet It seems odd to me. and and I've read plenty with different Yankees and their opinions on what they saw I saw Zach Britton. Did mind it. and other guys thought it was weird. but I think most of the time. We're just talking about as a TV audience I. Don't think the players chair I do think the players and I'm sure this is the next question i. do think the players need a little bit of crowd, noise and and I came out early and. Got Headlines because I talked about the need for something the. Broadcast and it can't just be flat dead And and still I'm anxious to see how that all plays out, but but to me. Jimmy is a work in progress and I think a lot of this. Stuff's going to be ironed out over the first couple of weeks. In the way you see and hear the game. On Thursday or Saturday or maybe even mid next week is going to be different than you see or hear the game two two weeks from now interesting. Yeah, I actually was going to ask about the crowd noise because. I feel like everyone's doing the fake crowd noise. I feel like it's not really a debatable topic anymore because it seems like locally and nationally, everyone's going to do it i. read somewhere today I. Don't know if it was Fox or another network. I should have paid close attention, but I guess. There's going to be some network that lets fans use an APP to safe. They WANNA boo or cheer, and they're going to use that as a way to do the crowd noise so. I heard about that early. Early in this off season in this build up, but what I find initial. report that I got on that, which is literally two and a half months ago three months ago was that there was just a nas of a delay that it would be off. You know like if you if you saw something that you wanted to boo or cheer. By the time you registered it through your phone and it registered in the stadium or on the broadcast. I think there was enough of the delay that it was a little Off a little off putting, but I know if that's something that's been ironed out in free that. I forgot that was you who caused the? Let stir about I. Guess You were the first went out there to say there's going to be crowd, noise and everyone crazy. Well I mean I talked to the funny thing is in this world is so weird to me. Sometimes with with regard to media coverage I, said set on real sports with Bryant Gumbel maybe three weeks prior. In every interview I did. I talked about a talked about talk about it I. do it on Andy Cohen's. Satellite Radio Show right, and then it becomes a thing Mike I've been saying this for three weeks. Why is this a thing now but? He does and and you know how these things go there. Producers pump it out. May You know sometimes? It gets picked up so maybe it was a slow news. Ask, did you? Did you plead the fifth? Did you answer all three questions? And that was his radio show. You did not watch what happens live. Yeah, but I have been on watch. What happens live, but thankfully I think that was tree three questions on with the lovely. Vicki Gun Vilson of the real housewives of Orange County mailing maybe and I remember sitting there and people on twitter. Who had no idea who I was Bio Vicki? Johnson had no idea why was were tweeting and all my God these two are such a such a fun, couple and I. And I remember sitting there during a commercial break, and she turned to me and the set is like the size of my dorm room at college. It's tiny and. She turns to me and she goes now. What do you do and I said I'm here? do in the All Star game. For Major League Baseball at City, field Oh, that's cute and then turn back around and. And that was that was really my only off. Air Exchange with thing. And I. WE'RE GONNA. Go totally off the beaten path, but will Andy Andy in a way is sort of like a guy. We both are huge fans of in how it starting that they get people to say things..

"Like we know where you are in, we're coming to get you back in the day. I, remember my dad. When I was a kid, my dad and scully talking about it. because my dad had finally a experienced it for the first time on national TV level, even though he'd done a bunch of bunch of national things, it's a different animal and. They were kind of laughing about it. And now you go to the social media, world and I'm the only one I've done. Twenty two world series, but I've done I think the last twenty during which. Social media was invented so. I'M GONNA. Get my fair share of it and then some, but it's been going on throughout the history of Network TV and it will happen again, oh. Yeah, yeah, yeah, when I'm long though. All right, so let's get into it. Is Saturday well first of all. Let's start with this if if. Everything goes well, which in two thousand twenty is total crapshoot. We will have baseball returning on Thursday, and then Joe and John. smoltz on Saturday will get to call Yankees nationals for Fox first things first. Tell me how you guys are calling the game. You're you at the stadium in separate booths in the same booth in a studio. What's how will we doing it with Fox? We're not only not in the stadium or in separate booths. We are not in the same city. I will be in Denver Colorado. John will be in Jersey at the MLB headquarters. Our producer Pete and Jessica was phenomenal what he does. will be in L. A.. And we will make it come together. you know I I remember when my dad drive to spring training, my first year of Doing Aaa Louisville and I was skipping out of college and going to triple A. We had a lot of talks and the drive between Saint Louis and Saint Petersburg Florida. And I remember distinctly him. Saying you know I, want you to remember one thing when you get into this business. Nobody cares if the announcer is cold. Nobody cares if you is. The announcer are hot. Nobody cares if you're tired. Nobody cares if your vantage points, thanks. Nobody cares if you played golf that day. And certainly nobody cares what you shot, so do the game realizing the people just want to watch the game. Enjoy it, and you'll be fine, and that has stuck with me and I. Don't think it's evermore. Important to remember the now when I'm just doing the game awesome monitor doing a game off TV John's doing the game. The same way I'll be able to see him on a side camera. I'll be able to talk on talk back with my producer Pete with John. But. We're just GONNA. Put together, and we're not gonNA. Ask like Oh my God. I can't believe we're doing the game this way. He and I cannot wait to get back and I can't wait to watch baseball and and we'll. We'll muddle through it as best we can. And then the world will keep spinning in the summer. Come up the next day. Are you nervous about I? I'd be shocked. I'm sure you're not nervous about actually doing the play by play. You've been doing that for so long. You do it in your sleep. Are you nervous about the technical stuff? Though I mean your Internet goes out or anything like that? Are you sure? have. Has Your House been like as Fox? Come in text up your house now. I'm still relying on the same Internet service that I've had for the seven years. We've lived in the house. In now. In this case I will be sitting in a studio in Denver Colorado in a Fox affiliate so I feel like. I'm actually better. Austin if I were at home my worried about it. No and is, could things go wrong? Absolutely, but I've done a world series where the picture went out because there was a transformer. Explosion and Kansas City and had to go over, and and in the worst moment of my broadcast career kick best Gurjin. and smalls out broadcast what they were doing. The the world feed and have Harold Reynolds and Tom Verduci. I slide in and take over their boots, and then that became what got on Fox. Stuff happens and that's live TV and I. Think I think now more than ever. People are willing to accept less than perfect audio people are willing to accept less than perfect video. You know we've been going so far that way. it now during this pandemic in zoom calls and everything else. Although you sound phenomenal to me, this is the best connection I've ever had my life. I feel like people are used to having meetings, or whatever or happy hours, or whatever over zoom, and it's just not a perfect system right, so it's going to be the same way for sports and it. It may crap out for five seconds and then come back in. This is amazing. Soon as he said, crap data crapped out. We should leave this and by the way. Chari. You know as soon as you said crapped out slapped out. Yeah I. Think! It's the size of my ears. That has I was. Leaning into my phone waxing poetic. Ear Lobe touch the mute button. We need to leave that in because you literally said. This is the best zoom call you've had. And you said the words crapped out, and you disappeared, but in this case and I have to stick up for zoom which I haven't been. Amassing for the last three and a half months. This is my head, my ear zoom. You're off the hook for this. This is all mean. Son is tremendous. That is tremendous. Let me ask you the decision for you to be in a studio in Denver and. John will be being in Jersey in a studio MLB headquarters. Did you have input on that decision? Is that a Fox decision? Would you have any trepidation about flying to Washington and calling the game in the nationals Ballpark? Yeah, it's a Fox decision at this point, with with regard to broadcasters being in the stadium. I don't know what MLB's policy would be, but I certainly the home announcers are allowed to be there. So I don't think that would be an issue. So that's a Fox decision, and then because amount ear, my my wife's mother. Just moved into a retirement center I. Think is the politically correct term. These days so we going to visit her. WE'VE BEEN IN DENVER. Or in Colorado and you know I'm not gonNA fly home to do a game on my computer I'd rather just do the game from a studio and have as much at my disposal and the cleanest connection that I can't. Would I be worried about going to DC to do game? Absolutely, NOT I. You know I feel like with the number of hotel rooms and plane flights and dirty ballparks that I've been in since I was onto I, feel like. I'm you know and I say this and I'll probably Regret saying, but I feel like I'm doing everything I can. With every guideline that's been put out there for mass to washing my hands to social distancing and all that so you know at some point you gotta just go on about your life and the smart about it, so no, I would have absolutely no issue going to DC to do the game. Interesting. The are you guys doing any sort of test runs I know there's a very limited amount of exhibition games. Have you done tests? Run to just get the logistic straightened out or you just GonNa Wing. It's now. We're GONNA. Do it Friday before the Saturday. Night game and we'll get on. And see what you know what what needs to be ironed out the only thing that I to be honest with the only thing that I'm ever worried about whether. It's doing a game in this situation or interviewing somebody or doing a hit from a ballpark into pre-game. Show whether it's baseball football, whatever is that delay? And and if there's a delay between John and me, and that's problem in and if if there isn't. then we'll be fine so I I. Really I'm anxious to get in there. I will take a picture of it. "He had his own show where he would talk. Nba Craig kilborn. Yes the next four and like a great one that would always be on. Everyone knows Stuart Scott and Dan Patrick and Keith Olbermann but seeing Linda Cohn is so nice like these are the. These are the people we grew up with. It's fantastic Charley Steiner and Jack Edwards Kenny. Mayne you know it's it's that's to me is you know. That's when I watch sports center I watch Van Pelt and you know now if I'm up but like that's when you had to watch it you you had no choice. If you're a sports fan you had to watch it. Basically realize that we used to wake up Monday mornings open a newspaper and tabulate. How many rushing yards. You're running back ad and how many touchdowns at this is how we did. Fantasy sports. Us It with a marker in the newspaper and You would only get your highlights from. Chris Berman and Tom Jackson on a Sunday night. Because there's no chance before direct TV that you even saw that rams forty niners game on the West Coast and so a gym effort did like in the people that told us and shaped our opinions on sports or those guys. I mean I do the morning show now for NFL network. I can't imagine I'm coming on many Monday mornings and I'm telling the viewer about a game. That happened on Sunday. If you're watching our show they don't already know what happened to it was always the Monday morning was always USA Today. Because I couldn't take a chance that the daily news of the post would be like a late addition the Sunday night. Giving me because you had a great the fantasy fantasy game that week so get. Usa Today aren't we covered it? All we We went through it. Is I know you wanted to talk about the answers or anything left on the table for you to say I love it but I also am open saying we might need episodes twelve thirteen fourteen. Fifteen sixteen it'd be nice what Here's a question for you. Let's do this if there was if they were going to do something similar to the last dance. Same exact thing with one. Nfl Player. Who would you want to see a bi who asked me team? It would be like no okay. Nineties cowboys cowboys. The amazing player I go back and forth because there's guys who have these wild lives like off the field and there's guys that are just truly committed on the field Yeah I could. I could go a lot of ways and I don't have an answer. Who aren't there a nineties? Cowboys would be the ultimate documentary. It's still hasn't been don. None of those guys have gotten on camera. None of them have gotten together. But the stories that you get whether it be from Jeff Perlman's book or from and not even the salacious stuff. I'm talking just the stories of Dave. Want Stat explaining the defensive meetings. You know to me when I'm doing my show for Fox like these guys have so many stories that have not been told and I feel like now is the golden era would love a ten part series on the Jimmy Johnson. And then even the Barry Switzer cowboys that. Aras fantastic to me. That's a good answer. Good answer do you know when the when the running back with Kyle doing the oilers those light tonight Jose night they'll dot com okay and then it'll be on youtube as well? I? I don't know if you're a fan of listening to me Gab With you right now. If you're listening you don't usually watch good morning football kyle and I. We have a blast. Together it's fun and if you've enjoyed what Jimmy you're talking about going back down memory lane. I I greatly encourage you to give it a shot. I think you'll like it. It's perfect because I wanted an old oilers game Warren Moon run-and-shoot so I will This comes out Wednesday morning so it'll already be on. Nfl Network that's perfect. You'll get plenty of Haywood jeffries. If you wish there you go love it and give Ernest given misgivings. Curtis Duncan Cardis Dunkin. That's it that was it right there and they never had a good running back. Who's the running back? Lorenzo white up in this game though. It's Garry Brown remember. The giant Browns was hurt. Yup Looking forward to that strikes appreciate it. Stay well and we will talk to you soon. Good Morning football enjoy it. Thank you all right? Take Care All right Mike. Thanks to Peter Schrager. Great Conversation enjoyed a lot. He was tremendous can see him every day. Monday Friday. Nfl Network. Good morning football and check out running back with him. "Thousand nine hundred eighty eight. I don't care what the score is. What an and just put it on and I'm going to watch it. Can I tell you my favorite part of the last dance? It's not the Michael Jordan looking at the IPAD in the meantime it seeing Chris Gatling. Take Dennis Rodman in the post. It seeing you know debt left shrimp at a Pacers Jersey. It's that's the stuff the old place last night when I'm flicking through and I see that on. Nfl Network. Jimmy. We could talk about the broadcast elements of it. But what about Marian buts about Ben? Coates what about you know? Mark Ingram Senior Irving Fryar like there is a real style to seeing these men and not the hall of famers like the other guys that Kyle and I are leaning into also. Because we're doing this thing and to get through your leading to it. Were doing a thing for NFL DOT com. That they're they might put on. Nfl Network as the first one went really well but he and I go back. And we re watch games from yesteryear. And it's not the classic Super Bowls that you've seen thirty times from NFL films. It's a random playoff game or a random regular season game that you might remember and that we break it down. Not The plays not the famous moments where we hit all that. But we're talking about. What the Hell is he wear? Joe Montana is wearing eastern wrist bands in the game that we did this week. We did nineteen ninety-three chiefs versus oilers. A game where Joe Montana takes the chiefs into the astrodome and every time the the oilers make a sack they're playing whoop there. It is by TAG team encountered. I break it down like that's exactly exactly what you were doing. Less light on twitter tweeting about this game like what in the world is happening in this broadcast in an awesome. I Yeah I I love the fact that you're doing a cheese because I was thinking to myself last night. I didn't tweet this but in my head. I'm like I'd love to see any game from the astrodome. Oilers run-and-shoot days love and says I love that you're doing that. I I can't believe that and you know it's funny as I'm watching the game and I. I remember when I was a Kid. My two favorite running backs in the NFL. Where Marian Butts and natron means he means business and it was Chris. Berman Natron means business and Marian. You know cigarette butts or whatever God the pads that Marion Butts at on last night and I forgot I totally forgot. He was on the Patriots. Of course you think of them as the San Diego chargers number. Thirty five yeah. Yeah This game that we're doing. Let me just give you? Some unlocked Christian equate because of course and Berry word. Whoever else barry word up very word up We're doing against gone. Nfl DOT COM. You can find. It's called run it back? It's GonNa be on Youtube. The first one we did was the Freddie Mitchell game in two thousand four when it was fourth in twenty six and mcnabb hits Freddie Mitchell and we ended up talking about the furniture play. We end up talking a lot more about Todd Pinkston. Who's the other wide receiver? Who's got just chicken? Legs and his dominating this game and talking about Almond Green and why we never think of green is one of the great running backs of that Arab. Anyway we're doing this game and it's Warren Moon which would end up being his last game as a Houston oiler. It's it's Joe Montana. And The wild part is this is two weeks after. Kevin Gilbride gets punched in the face by Buddy of mine that are broadcast in the game is is Dick Ebersol. Nbc's the Lead Guy. Dick Ebersol the play by play guy. No no no Dick Emberg Dick Enberg. I'm sorry to ever sell probably put them in the booth. Ebersol is the executive. Dick Enberg is doing the play by play and it's Bob trumpy who you probably remember. Bob Trump tight end. And he's fantastic. He's been tastic in and the entire broadcast. Every play that happens it's cut away to Buddy Ryan Grimacing are rolling is. And it's it's incredible. Montana takes a beating and part of the broad. Could part of the stuff that me and kyle are about his holy cow like Montana as an elbow that looks like a baseball getting knocked around. The refs are not protecting him. And Joe Montana's a chief. We we remember okay. He had a nice little playoff run. You'll forget Joe. Montana missed two full seasons from the. Nfl shows up the chiefs in ninety three and takes them to the playoffs. Wins the game in overtime against the Pittsburgh steelers on a crazy comeback and then comes back all the way in the Astrodome in the House of pain and beats the oilers in it would end up being one of the great comebacks of Joe Montana's career. It's forgotten because you know whatever it time goes on and we forget but we went back and revisited it and it's just tasked with Marty Schottenheimer that she's coach. Marty Schottenheimer coach of end. They're down ten. Nothing and Joe Montana. Hits a guy named Keith? Cash tight end and those. Who are die hard. Nfl fans might remember this. Keep scores a touchdown makes it ten to seven takes the ball and he spikes the ball on a poster of Buddy Ryan's face in the end zone love it. And it's like the most violent like touchdown celebration and me and I'll go to a whole riff on like if this were to happen at of Gronk was to score a touchdown and then go and throw the ball at a drawing of the face of the defensive coordinator. I think the broadcasters would be outraged. It'd be like what an immature petulant. Guy Gob Trumpian Emberg our loved. Like yeah rate. There's no place in the game. No place for that kids watching. But it's all about the look and the feel of the broadcast. There's no I intend. There's no score. There's no bottomline ticker it's very odd. It yet incompletely completely endearing. It was great I I had a couple of awful people reply to me on twitter last night about like. How can you know? It's very hard to watch us with no score bug and no down and like that person is one. Why are you sending me that tweet? Like if I'm sitting here saying I enjoy this. I don't need you to come in and tell me you're not I don't give a shit and to. That's not why you're watching the game for the actual score and the the play. I mean you're doing it all wrong and don't tweet me. It's just so good. Those pay the parcel screaming every player. Last night was phenomenal. Just constantly. Berating people loved it. Which leads me to a segue on this podcast. Which is your podcast to my question based on this Michael Jordan documentary. Can I ask you? Can WE DIG in. We can dig in. I hear I'm so I have. I want to talk about the last dance. I Y you just ask one question. I have so much to say about the last dance but I am very terrified of saying it because there's going to be backlash and I'm not in the mood to or not being cynical or not being negative about the actual documentary. It's a question to you in a sports media. Sense that I think you and your listeners can ponder good if Michael Jordan was treating teammates like he treated in that nineteen ninety eight season that we see in that all of the people on twitter are champing in loving and saying. Oh He's got such incredible vision. What a savage. What a winner. Whatever if there was an athlete. Who is doing that today? Would the same people on twitter? Who are lionising and loving Michael Jordan's intensity and commitment to excellence and in crazy way? He treated these teammates but that he brought them along with the same exact people. Praising Michael Jordan's greatness. Today be appalled if an athlete was to treat a teammate that way in two thousand twelve they would be trying to take down. Michael Jordan. Twenty four seven. Because I I'll say that would not fly today. There'd be a lot of backlash flu then. I don't think it was celebrated. I'm saying the same people on Twitter. Who WERE PRAISING. What a look at the focus. Look how he talks to these guys like look how he treated. Scott Burrell again Jordan. Goes out of the way to say you know. Hey off the court I was great and I you know. Burrell says the same thing. He was as awesome as it could be bunker the same exact people talking both sides of their mouth and I don't have names also. I'll say this I'll say this. This is one of the pro. I don't even know if you WANNA say problem but this is one thing that I think people have to understand. The documentary is airing on. Espn ESPN people staff dominate twitter. More than any other sports organisation those people are. Never GonNa say one negative thing about the documentary or Michael Jordan and I don't even mean negative. You're not gonNA see a critique you're not gonNA see know there was even an incident This Sunday where the episode where he wins the title after his dad is a father's day he throws himself on the floor hysterically crying. I don't understand that how you don't cut him today and say talk to me about that moment. What was going through your head what known from. Espn's ever going to say that you're never going to get one ESPN person offering a critique or anything about Jordan or the documentary. So that's why when you go on twitter. It looks like people are just orgasm. Twenty four seven over the documentary because the biggest media company entity in the sports world can't offer anything other than this is the greatest thing since sliced bread. So we can do it because we're not affiliated with. Espn now having said that the documentaries great. It's phenomenal it's entertaining. It's the old stuff the old footage MARV DOING GAMES WITH BILL. Walton said those those sons uniforms that they trump they all baby blue nets uniform. The documentary could not be more enjoyable. But you can critique some things that are not in it or not covered and for me you know. I don't have this. I think Michael Jordan is the single greatest basketball player of all time. That's my opinion but I don't have this. Let me get on my hands and knees in. Bow Down to them type thing. When I watched that I think okay. Yes on one hand. He seems like an extremely cool individual the way you know the cigars and the suit but I see that and I'm like he I wouldn't WanNa hang out with him for five minutes. He seems he seems exhausting. To be around with the constant just busting balls. And everything's a competition and this and like I can't be around people like that for a long time. I want to be like just you gotta calm down for five minutes and Michael Jordan's response. Which is what he says. When these critiques for being a tough teammate? Well then I'm off where you. I'm not all awesome guy and Jimmy. You grew up in where long island where for a soothing. You were more of a Mason Oakley Guy. And you're a ewing I was and I was actually grew up in New Jersey. And I know it sounds crazy but like Patrick and and Kenny Anderson. And Derrick Coleman and all those guys were my guys growing up and I think I don't view Jordan the same way either and yet I find this documentary to be such a wonderful trip down memory lane and that's what I love like. It brings warm feelings of when I really loved the NBA. And when things were real like the rivalry stuff with Isaiah is real. And it's still real. I see now you know. Whoever is drinking wine with Lebron James Barber shop and they're all just complaining about you know the media and it's like I get it but like I kind of wish. There were some rivalries in that there was some Actual without a doubt you know like it was much better back then so much better and the NBA. I as far as the documentary itself. I think it's fantastic little bit too much. Bj Armstrong is that fair to say. I don't think beat Armstrong plays a major major role in Michael Jordan's story and yet I strong. I don't have a problem with with that. That's fine you don't you don't with the Divisional. Rasc- like I'll give you one thing. Everybody loves this week and I didn't love was the La Bradford Smith thing because just came off like a guy making a story like well no but Jordan's the one who made it up but my so it's like okay. So he's the greatest player of all time but he needs to make up a story about La Bradford. No he doesn't need to make up a story about with private Smith because when he can put the ball in the hoop like no one ever could. It goes without saying. That's a window into the psychosis the mental. That's what I'm saying like. I find gamesmanship that he needs. He needed that edge. I I wrote about it. Monday for aside Com got great response. A lot of people read. It was good about the narrative that the documentary because he punched eve current face and he would bully scupper rally. That that's what may Jordan and the Bulls. Great it's just such the Bulls won championships because of Michael Jordan Scottie. Pippen and Dennis Rodman's basketball ability. Not because Michael Jackson Michael Jackson not Michael Jordan was an asshole. A ridiculous like so. Tim Duncan One. How many rings was he an animal? Like what kind of ridiculous narrative is put?.

"The you know who knows if preseason start on time etc how many preseason games how much. How much time would what would a football player? Need to get ready for the season if it start on time. And he brought up an excellent point. I hadn't thought of that. Every person in the League is different. Because they're all working out differently right now. He's in Wisconsin on his ranch. Which you know God only knows what Kinda. Jimmy's got up there where he said other guys might just have to bands and they're running at their high school track so even for the players. You know you brought up mcvay in the coaches. Even for the for the players. From a training standpoint there's a huge pendulum there and it's completely different team two team. I know one team that has requested that players take a photograph of the scale. And tell me how to weigh in every day and send it in to the trainers just so we could keep your weight maintenance and like another team who says all right two hours two days a week will do zoom stuff and will have guest speakers and trust you guys do your work on your own like there's a whole other strategy going on now with how you're gonNA manage the quarantine in the workout both mentally and then of course like you just mentioned what. Jj Watt physically. Because quite honestly if you are a player who lives in the actual city like some eagles. I know live in an apartment buildings with you. Know maybe twelve hundred square feet in a family like that's a very different situation to get your get your body in shape than what J. J. Watt stealing within the cabinet in the woods. So I didn't hear what you just said. I've been shaking ever since you said you have to take a picture of your weight and send it entrust. Could you imagine I know have you have? You had a big like quarantine indulgence. A couple of weeks ago I went through a big fritos. Fr- phase whereas eating way too many fritos. Quarantine indulgence that you. You've had too much of I went early bad like I went early like frozen pizza man and then I cut it back and then now it's like you know we could talk all day about how life has changed but you got a kid. He's getting home schooled. We've got I work from home now. My wife works. We're we're we're working. It's tire and then at the end of the day I I convince myself. It's okay to have five scoops of Ben and Jerry's earned this and that's the indulgence. I'm going with Ben and Jerry's fly off the shelves. These days is very very hot commodity. Yeah this is Jon Wertheim if you like this show and our sports illustrated podcasts. There's another show. We think you should check out. It's called against the rules against the rules. Bestselling author and journalist. Michael Lewis's searing look at fairness in every aspect of American Life Financial Markets Newsroom Sports Arenas Court of law and more in season. Two now in full swing. He examined the role of coaches in society. It wasn't that long ago that we only had coaches and sports. Now they're everywhere. There are life coaches and death coaches. You can hire a coach to improve your executive skills your online dating performance. Even your charisma but coaching is also become an odd source of unfairness. Just look around and ask yourself who has access to these coaches and the edge they provide in who doesn't in. What does that mean for? All of us subscribed to against the rules and apple podcasts. Or wherever you listen brought to you by Pushkin Industries I wanNA talk to you about. We got to talk about the show you Macau a back and I want to get into something last night. I WanNa talk about the last dance but I got. You mentioned homeschooling going your son. And you mentioned you know McVeigh's there were no kids so he doesn't have kids. Have you had an incident with like you're on live on good morning football and your kid comes in the room. Have you had any of that yet? Yes and like nate. Nate Burleson was like doing like a passionate take on. Like I'm like you know like cove in nineteen and the importance of what it is in Seattle before four box which TV terms is that that Brady bunch screen. You see where there's four people's faces on nate's talking about like the local impact of Corona virus in Washington state and my son just walks right in as Daddy. Where's the toy car? You let the audio on the microphones on and it just is like this is what it is. Is it endearing maybe? Is it annoying? Perhaps but it is what it is. I think I'm someone who's like. Let it roll. Don't try to fix it. Don't try to make it nice and let it roll roll. 'cause that's the days a caused lights went out. Cows likes out and instead of US running from it and you know all right. We're we're still in studio guys. Know we leaned into it and I was like we just critiqued. How budget has set up is like no. He's got like a lamp. You have in your college dorm room. And I'm like that's in your home. So you bought that land for your home. And then there's a whole discussion about kyle go into Ikea to you. Know outfit his right downstairs basement when Adam schefter looks like you know his in the College Library University of Michigan right eye to eye to tape and video everyday for whatever the lead item in my columnists. I had to take one today. With about Lamar Jackson the Shell. Freida that eats before every game. And the guy. Take the video with Robin Lumbergh. Who's our our video host? His kid was like you know making a little noise before we started in that trying to keep them quiet. Listen if if the kid is like crying or making noise while wishing video I'll tell robin stuff some shrimp. Alfredo Dana's Alibaba and we'll be fine. Like just let it roll very very early on in this thing because we all remember the video of the guy on the BBC kid. Crying very early on this thing. I was watching. Nfl LIVE ON ESPN. And it was like right at the start of free agency and Matt Hasselbeck doing something from his basement and you see the treadmill in the background and the phone shaking like wild and I like what is I kinda like it. It's so budget. And Hasselbeck is a former star flared all the stuff and he's so smart and I texted on like I don't know what was going on but I love the fact that you're living life like the rest of US needs like right. My sixteen year old daughter was filming that on on the IPHONE and Mike. Yes that's how it should be. That's what life is exactly and because in this situation now the old games are in place so you and kyle. I'll just say this. I wrote a column early on this probably in mid March when this all first started and I made a plea every network every sport every network old games. We don't need new. I was coming off where like ESPN was popping up this classic NFL game and it was chiefs rams from last year. No I need I think. The primary I said is anything from nineteen. Eighty to nineteen ninety-five..

"Hope you are all safe and healthy and staying in and surviving the madness that we have been going through good not good great actually going to pump it up. Great podcast today. We've got Peter Schrager from the NFL network and Fox sports on the show. We covered a million topics into broadcasting booths. Three people versus people who we think could be good for Monday night football. We like what we don't like from announcers talked about watching old games. We talked about the last dance. When in depth on Michael Jordan were talked about some issues. We might have with the last dance that you won't hear anywhere else because ESPN people are not going to criticize it We discussed the NFL schedule in terms of Christmas and Thanksgiving. We discussed What we're going through here a little bit to quarantine and what how that will affect NFL teams and what NFL front offices. Think about what's going on so we get into a little bit of that and really covered a bunch of topics with Peter Schrager. Who of course is on Good Morning Football Monday through Friday on the NFL Network and works for Fox sports and the sidelines for them as well? So that is this week show. It's really good. Peter was great last week. I in Eagle from. Cbs was on the show. Two weeks ago Chris. Long and three weeks ago Michael Imperatively and Steve Sherpa from the soprano. So if you missed any of those you can dip into the archives and give those listen. You're not a subscriber to the media. Podcast pleased the subscribe. Button helps me tremendously. And that's it. Let's get to this week. Show right now with the always fun. Peter Schrager Four. Okay join me now. One of my favorites from the best morning show on television also from Fox sports. Peter Schrager hasn't been on in a while strikes going. Jimmy how we doing. Thanks for inviting me onto the podcast. You you know you have an open invite anytime you you have so many good like pop. Culture takes always loves mixing. It up with you. I gotTa thank you though. All you guys doing podcast. I swear an every week listener when it's non quarantine time but the audio medium of podcasts. I find to be a lot more palatable than sitting in front of a TV all day. When you're in the house on the couch. I like being able to go outside listening. Walking and your podcast has been great. The Iron Eagle one. I must say as required. Listen one of the great person held. He's of our game and you guys did a fantastic job with him. I appreciate that I get zero credit. I was tremendous just him imitating raftery and Chris Russo and the stories he has Jerry Jones He. He was phenomenal last week. He really was one of the one of the best guys in sports media. That's you always hear that about everyone and we'll just I mean hell we're doing. Let's just start off and on an Iron Eagle conversation. I did preseason for the jets this year. It was me. Anthony Becht an iron eagle eye on his like a ship. Captain out at sea like just guiding the broadcast could not be more encouraging. But I go back so far with I in that like when I first started doing this in three or four. He knew I was a nets fan because I would call in. Wfan talk about New Jersey Nets basketball. He was the voice of the nets in one day. We were emailing and he was like want to go to a game here. You go got tickets to a nets game at the Brendan Byrne arena allow. I an eagle. This was back when I was like blogging. For whatever website would take it That is salt of the earth. That's a good man right there. That's a great yeah. Did you know that Mike? Breen us when he when he when he does the Knicks Games. Now I don't know if he does it with the national. Espn game the Knicks Games. Before the game is he goes to the like the rafters finds like dad and his on mom mom and dad and kit and brings them down to like lower seats. Does that forever game fantastic? I get a I can't speak for the analysts because they're usually ex players and coaches and there's always a little bit of a guard but those guys I would be really challenged to find a play by play guy at the top levels the Mike Breen. The irony goes the Joe. Bucks gymnasts who are assholes like those guys are genuinely like incredibly hardworking working people and some of the nicest guys I've ever met Kenny. Albert. He's like the nicest dude you'll ever those get Kevin Burkhart. Just neither guy grinders but like totally get it and are self aware and understand that. It's the game not really them. That people are tuning in to watch and stuff like that. You always hear stories. It's usually the play by play guy above and beyond and and there's nobody and you know outside of the players. Obviously there's nobody in sports who gets more shit than the play by play guys because people think they hate their teams they make one mistake idiots like me blow it up and write a column about it. It's the the microscope is on those especially in the NFL. No and it's this. It's I can do what you're doing like corners talking or collins where it's talking the guy at home knows. I didn't have the career Chris Collins Kurt Warner had but if Mike Tariq owes talking like well who's what did he ever play. I could talk like that. None An. It's probably the hardest thing to do is play by play. I don't even know if I could try to it. Have you ever had interest in doing color? I Know Your Network Fox has the number two spot open right now with with Burqa. You WanNa make a pitch to Jacob Ullman or Eric shanks here. Is that anything you'd ever want to do? Of course but I think with me it would be more as like the Kornheiser. Dennis Miller not necessarily with wisecracks but like I did preseason for the rams two years ago with Nate Burleson and Anderson Leon up in the booth being the third man in and in a lot of times I do sidelines chime in but I love. I would love the opportunity to get up in the booth maybe not on a full-time GIG for a game here game there because I speak to every team President general manager coach and it's not just in the production meeting. I do think there's a place for the writer still in like Kornheiser had that opportunity. I'm trying to think if there's any others simmons. I think did a couple of games in the college game and he did studio show like you don't see many of guys who are like sports media guys who are connected being putting up with like the Monday night gig. They're talking about like put Pat McAfee as that guy. I think. Curious to hear Schefter in the booth and he's got all that knowledge and the insight and talks to everybody and it'd be curious to hear some of the commerce whose like I have no problem share in that stuff on good morning football every morning. I think that broadcasting refund but no I'm not gonNA pitch for anything more than what they wanna give me. I'm quite happy with what I do at Fox but you would. You wouldn't mind doing a game as an analyst. I Know Jacob all been listening to this podcast. So maybe he can hear this. And let's get Peter King. Come across as of me saying Oh. I know what I'm saying. I'm not breaking down any replays. I'm not telling you what happened in the three four scheme. But if you WANNA know why Brandon. Bean has a connection with Sean McDermott. I'm your guy you know I can give you the back story. Give you a little more information. I think you'd see you sound smarter. The next morning at the water cooler after listening to a broadcast with one of the guys in my roles as opposed to at not having it so my make it a A case myself no but if there is a guy a writer or anything I would. I wouldn't mind hearing some thoughts on a broadcast every once in a while from someone other than the X. Player the ex coach does. It's it's amazing to me that you've brought this up because I didn't really plan on getting into the Monday night. Football thing and the Fox. And he's a number two analyst thing. I was saving so I'll make about me for a minute and pull back the curtain so like When I wrote my column today on. We're taping this Tuesday afternoons. When I wrote train of thoughts on Tuesday morning I was gonNA write about Monday night football. And what they should do because they formally announced test. Burger won't be back then. I was surfing around the web and I saw a lot of people a lot of media. People have done that so I'm like you know what? Let me save that for maybe two Wednesday or Thursday when it could send out a little more and then I had this story about. Lamar Jackson Needs Shrimp. Alfredo before every single game. That's certainly more important exactly. It was like I can mention the office so I went with that So I'm going to write about this Wednesday Thursday but I'll discuss it with you on a so because I think I saw my good friend Richard Daichi Britain. Something that said. Espn should go with. I think Steve leaving my play by play. And then I think you mentioned riddick and I forgot who it was whatever whatever it was named three people and I despise the three person booth in almost every sport especially the NFL. And I think if you look at the good teams today which are obviously Buchan Aikman and Nansen Romo and Michaels and cal. It's two people but the way you're presenting the third person I think see. I think maybe maybe thought maybe they do that with when they had bugger on the crane. But I do think if you have your traditional play-by-play person traditional analyst and then someone like you who can come in with the anecdotes and the stories about all the people you talk to during the week that works but when you have two people in the booth trying to analyze a three yard run its Bertel. Yes so I go back and forth on it. Because sometimes it's worked like I worked on a crew couple years ago where it was play by play with Thom Brennaman and then Charles Davis and Chris Spielman and they're completely opposite types of analysts and in really worked like and they were so selfless giving up half their analysis to do it but that has to be the case. It has to be where the two guys are willing to cede to the other and say okay. Well you're going to take the lead on this one and all echo you. It's it can't work in a in a in a Into Silos I can't have. Here's the play then. Here's analysts X. Giving his thoughts and here's analysts Z. Not even right bonding. What Xhang and doing what he takes. Now to me Dennis Miller I went back because now is the time to do it. If you can go back and watch old broadcasts like I went back. I watched the jets dolphins game the famous jumbo. Elliott game and like Dennis Miller is on the call and I didn't hate it but like I could see where it would great after sixteen weeks where you've got everyone can talk about Miller now and his politics and I'm not going there especially on a podcast that that you know twitter listens to but at the time he's referencing seventeen eighty s you know comedy from Russian oligarchs but it was unique it was different and then I almost wish there was another year where we could see. Okay how this go kornheiser. I went back and listen to the two thousand six. It was Mike Tirico Joe thighs men. Tony Kornheiser two thousand.

"The geico Fox Sports radio studios to get us caught up on everything that happened today in the world to spoil yes what's up Steve hello gentlemen and we'll have a lot of NFL news in a moment I like the fact that you brought up the fact that the pistons did not shake the opponent's hands after they lost to the bulls in the playoffs it is so weak and Isaac can try and explain it away saying Hey we didn't happen in there they just showed clips of it happening in that era in fact from the team that you beat the previous two years so that is there's just so many examples around nineteen ninety of how the pistons were great on the scoreboard and not great if they're actually giving the finger when this is another example of that and the fact that the whole Jordan rules things on the one hand you have course it's great to devise something the basketball nuts and bolts that they pointed out in the document of not letting him drive baseline pushing him out to the elbow great give it a shot but really the the concept became with the pistons just have a series of flagrant files because that player is so much better than we are this is what we hate about sports actually log in it's like the home run hitter where you just throw at him it's because he's better than you deal with it in some actual sports way it's what we do it's what we hate about soccer where everybody gets filed on break aways why because he's better than you it's just I didn't ever could I still can't added to it and I again giving other sports examples of how it just shouldn't be that way if we're on the court how about trying to win like you know be good at your sport Jordan was just better I mentioned last week on the show how I love watching the early bowls Jordan highlights and it really showed people how awesome he was when he had nothing around him then there was just a stand out quote in tonight's I think episode three he said Pippen's injured robin just got kicked out you left me alone out there yeah I believe it was five on five still Michael here it should be the last exactly a lot of F. bombs by the way in tonight's and I know they're running it on ESPN two also and so yeah there's an added on another channel but let's be honest ESPN's ratings until this past week I've just been atrocious in the last month and a half so they could have run this on four different channels they've got space let's just say that so if if we're like when they were wanting to run it in June I'm not sure if there would have been a secondary jail speaking as an editor it's just lazy to leave everything but once again I think we all agree those first two episodes last weekend were great and these next two tonight were great and I don't know what the numbers are going to be but the ratings were super for last weekend so probably more the same tonight and deservedly so we have N.
