Having the vets of Hedman and Mac, and then you know, journey and it's just it's It's a great group, but they will defend first, and that's the mentality they've taken as opposed to having the offensive side first, and I think that's really helped. They have, and it's been impressive to watch the back end and really the buy in from the forward as well being really good Defensive again. Man who found Forrest Fenn's famed treasure reveals identity
"So in an episode over the summer i talked about the treasure which had finally been found by an anonymous treasure hunter in june and after being adamant that he never wanted to reveal his identity. The finder of the treasure chest has just gone public blowing. The lid on most of his secrets in an article written by a fellow treasure hunter. In outside a quick recap though forest finn was an air force pilot who later opened an art gallery in santa fe new mexico one filled with plenty of forgeries as arts as tried to do people unclear in nineteen eighty eight. He received a terminal cancer diagnosis and decided to hide treasure chest in some outdoor location for people to find but then he recovered from the cancer. Still he didn't wanna give up on his treasure hunt idea so fast forward to two thousand and ten when quoting outside thin treasure chest containing gold and other valuables estimated to be worth at least a million dollars somewhere in the rocky mountains not long after he published a memoir called the thrill of the chase which included a mysterious twenty four line poem that if solved would lead searchers to the treasurer fended suggested the loot was secretive. Way at the place where he had envisioned lying down to die back when he believed his cancer diagnosis terminal since the hunt began in two thousand ten many thousands of searchers had gone out in pursuit at least five of them losing their lives in the process and the chase became an international story and quote. And yeah i mean the whole thing really has been a wild story people have lost their lives and livelihoods there have been countless lawsuits. You can read all kinds of articles about that have been published over the last ten years leading up to this year when in june the treasurer was finally found and the man who found it decided to stay anonymous because he knew how intense the community of treasure hunters is any feared for his safety but then quickly announced that he had met the winner and verified. He indeed had found the chest the to also decided to keep the location a secret so that it wouldn't become a kind of tourist site where people might injure themselves getting there were risk damaging the nature around it but all of that anonymity lack of closure did not sit well with people who had dedicated years of their lives to finding the treasure there was instant suspicion and then in september fourth fin passed away. The one man who could maybe smooth things over was gone and those left behind were even more dedicated to making sure. His wishes were upheld. With all of that has come a number of court cases in particular one from a woman claiming that the finder of the treasure hacked her emails to steal part of the puzzle that she herself had solved. She doesn't seem to have too much of a case however since she thought the chest was in new mexico and it turned out to be in wyoming but the case is still proceeding in the winner knew that his name would be released to the public as it goes on so he decided to preempt that by outing himself on his own terms the winner. Is jack still a thirty two year. Old medical student originally from michigan. He's keeping as many personal details as possible under wraps to protect his privacy but he does have a bit of a digital paper trail before to med school. He worked briefly at the onion and as a freelance writer. In fact he is the guy who wrote that totally inaccurate article eight years ago trying out matthew inman of the oatmeal as a far right wing. Republican in article buzzfeed had to issue a public apology for and which. I didn't realize until today that i still believed even after meeting matthew in minutes out by south west that same year back in two thousand twelve and discovering that he was a super nice guy. I still thought. Oh but some article made it. Seem like he secretly a jerk. I wonder if that's true. Which is a lesson for me in media literacy and not believing everything that i read especially when it seems pretty off base but also for all of us that no matter how many corrections or apologies you might issue online. There will still be tons of people who only ever see the mistake. That's a lesson that jack stiff learned early on in his career as a comedy writer and is probably part of why he has taken so many pains to remain anonymous in the case of backlash to him finding the prize. If and win all the court cases die down. What will still do with his findings. What does one do with an actual. The goodness treasure loaded up with jewels and artifacts. Stuff says he'll use it to pay off his student so yup the most accurate millennial answer possible to coming into unexpected fortune of. I still have to get the chest appraised which he hasn't done yet and between fins knack for forgeries and his wish that part of the chest displayed publicly so people can visit it. Who knows how much stuff will actually end up getting for all of his efforts but we finally have a few more pieces to the story. Whats 5Gs real impact going to be on the iPhone 12
"G. has been one of the most heavily hyped technologies in recent years and it's coming to the iphone twelve. I wrote her. Chang Industry daily charged with me is our expert things Mobile Shaare Tikkun. Welcome Char. Thanks for having me. We previously touched on how five G. will play a big role in the next iphone but ultimately, it wasn't mean to have five G. The African twelve. Yeah, I mean. So basically apples catching up with everybody else android basically all high end phones we've seen come out in the past year have had five G.. So this is that super fast connectivity super responsive there shouldn't be very much latency so you can do things like. You know have your band practice on Zoom and you'll actually be able to play in sync or do things like that. The phones are going to be capable. We'll have to see what happens with actually. And if they're able to take advantage of this, but generally, the idea is this is the connectivity that's going to be expanding all over the globe over the next decade basically, right for for most people especially off the bat, how will experience change or Willa Change? It really depends on what kind of five g you're tapping into. So some some versions of five G. are kind of slower They're not necessarily much faster than four g but then there's this other kind that's way way faster So if you're living in one of the cities that has it and you're basically standing near tower not behind any trees, you can have really fast download speeds kind of the problem. That we have with five G. Right now is it's basically all about speed. There are a ton of applications. There are a ton of new products or devices or services that really have evolved or come out because of five G.. So it's really kind of like downloading a video really quickly or streaming in four K. and not having glitch or anything like that. the hope is with apple getting into the market because it's it's going to be such a big player right away that developers start looking at more unique things that can take advantage of five G. and we have some some new services in new things come out like what we saw happen with four G. Right we had things like live streaming Uber A. Number of different apps you talked about the bands and let's break that down for our listeners. What are the different bands and which carriers are pushing, which bans when you think about the super fast life changing five g. that's something called millimeter wave. These are super high frequency bands extremely fast way way faster than what you get with four G. Super Responsive and. We're basically only seeing this in the US. This isn't really widespread around the world right now. And the biggest company that's really been pushing it is verizon verizon chose to build out its five G. Network I using millimeter wave so it can tout these insane speeds, but you can only get it in thirty six markets around the country. It's it's not even in every part of those cities so it might just be an you know downtown Chicago, but if you live on. The West side or whatever you can't get it. Then there's something called low banned. These are the slower but. More reliable airwaves, this has really been pushed by t mobile especially. So when t mobile talks about it's nationwide five G. Network, that's what it has. What's the nets reviewers have found is it's not really that much faster than four G. But It's easier for carriers rollout. We've also seen a t and T do a lot with this verizon hasn't launched its low band network yet, but that's still kind of expected this year the benefit of that is it's a lot easier to have pretty comprehensive, pretty good coverage. So you could theoretically cover a whole city with five G. if you're using low band kind of the sweet spot, five G. is what's called mid band. Waves these fall between the two and so there faster than four G. faster than low band. But they're more reliable than something like millimeter wave. So what we're going to see carriers use a combination of all three of those to have good five G. coverage over the next several years right support not mobile right now is really the only one actually ruling out mid band they got that spectrum from sprint while they were so. Griffin so desperate to by sprint and you're seeing some of that game rolled out now. In terms of price that that's obviously a big deal that iphones generally expensive phones began with. Do you think that Five G. will make. Phones more expensive. We're really going to have to see what happens. But what we generally seen across the board is that five G. does add to the cost of devices when the first five g phones came last year like Samsung's Galaxy S. ten was four hundred dollars more with five g. than if you just wanted the four version and kind of what that's meant is that if If there's an option in a market between four Gina Five G. version are buying the four G. version. They are buying five G. we've really seen prices come down very rapidly for five G. phones though. So Samsung's newest phones aren't really that much more expensive than the four G. versions last year or previously You know they're kind of starting around thousand dollars for their flagship lime. We'll have to see if apple. How much of a premium, it puts on five G. We also seen the millimeter wave versions are costing more than the other because they require some more components it's more difficult. There has to be these little sort of modules in a phone so that if you accidentally cover one with your hands, the other ones can still get the signal because the these radio waves cannot pass through your hands. So that adds to the size it it kind of affects the design of the device. I do think apple probably have. A premium for five G. but it's it's not going to be four hundred dollars more than what the iphone eleven lineup cost this year right? It's as you know the. Allow. These are the verizon variants right the pixel four with five g. that just got announced. Last week, we found out the horizon version that phone is one hundred dollars more than the standard Google version. So clearly, there's already a premium kind building on within a family of funds. So it'd be interesting to see how apple prices that particular millimeter wave. Version of it. Well, they're not they all get it. It's still kind of up in the air, right? Yeah. We don't know yet what's going to happen some rumors say that just the iphone twelve pro Max will have a millimeter wave version but basically, verizon doesn't really want to sell a five G. phone without millimeter wave and not everybody who wants a new iphone once the biggest phone. So we're really going to have to see if apple has millimeter wave in different options as well. you know kind of what we've seen with Samsung is they'll have one version that has millimeter wave and it comes out later than the other versions and it costs more than the other five versions. Apple, who knows what they'll do where we're GONNA find out but Yeah, it'll be really interesting to see how including millimeter wave is gonNA affect pricing for the IPHONES. Yeah. Speaking repricing there's also the other side of things, the carrier pricing plans and I'm sure this is something my listeners really care about is do I have to change my plan to access five G.? Yeah. That's a very complicated topic based on what carrier talking about you know, and then there's all these surveys coming out the like half of iphone owners think they're correct phones can access five their iphones can access five g. part of that is a t who had this five G. E. branding not five G. at all. You cannot access five G. it is forty with the different carriers, basically a t and T. if you want five G, you have to have a different plan. T mobile you can stay on your current plan and access five G. Verizon. Kind of has this sort of hybrid thing. If you want access, they're really fast millimeter wave you have to switch to a new plan Basically, these are all unlimited plans because the idea is five G. can consume a lot of data really quickly because it goes so so fast, you may not even realize how much you're consuming but but yeah, it's very complicated. Unit has a lot of good kind of breaking this down for people with some nice charts and explanations of how much is gonNa cost for four lines. What do I get with it etc but yeah, it is pretty complicated basically. Carriers get once a decade we moved to a new wireless technology. They've invested billions building out these networks may WanNa try to make that money back they want but they also at the same time, want people to move to these networks. So it's not like they're going to make it. So prohibitively expensive that everybody's like Nah I think I'm going to sit out five G. but you know they've they're trying to take advantage of the fact that we're switching to this new technology. Yeah. You make a good point. This is a big sort of switching opportunity for levies carries trying to get other folks jump from say at and T. mobile of rise in eighteen t with this new technology I suspect. You're right the plans already complicate I. Suspect will get even more complicated as we get more offers out as carries get aggressive And keep them under our listeners the the fine print on some of those plans they do still have those throttling limits. which they don't advertise but they do say like if you hit a certain amount, they do reserve the right to slow down even if it is a limited which I was found. A little annoying. But Anyway, the carrier. So the carriers that stone complication for folks who are looking to upgrade God. You know the regular old dependable phone what happens with that that I If, you have a for Gi phone. It doesn't mean that you need to throw this away by a new five G. iphone four G. keeps getting faster five G. isn't really widespread yet. So most markets you're still going to be tapping into four G. Any way you know especially, if you live in a rural area, there isn't really five G. There right now Four, G. also could get faster as more people move to five G.. So it's not like this phone is worthless but if you're planning to buy a phone this year, not upgrade for three or even four years you're probably GONNA WANNA buy a five G. phone. By that point, it's going to be pretty widespread We'll even see it in a Lotta rural areas and you. Just, need to future proof and look at five g. m. beyond just speed gains. What are some of the other benefits I'm talking about things like gaming a are that you could sort of expect to see on an foggy iphone? Yeah I mean I think that what one thing that apple probably push augmented reality that is something they've been talking about for a long time they. Just see huge potential with it You know kind of the best example we've seen as Pokey Mongo and that doesn't really rely on having that greater connectivity like that isn't something where all of a sudden it's going to be a much better experience with five G.. So we're going to have to see what developers come up with or apple comes up with things gaming. Kind of the biggest benefit with gaming aside from just the speed is the latency. So it there isn't going to be a sort of lag. So if you're playing a shooting game or you know whatever game against your friend I yeah. Thanks. Yeah. For nine point four. Although iphones I duNno fortnight. If you already have downloaded on here I found A. Those are going to be really quick and responsive and Yeah. We'll have to see though how much developers take advantage of this and and you know what? Actually what it's like in practice I think the phone makers and carriers frankly are all kind of struggling to find ways to make us really want five G.. I've talked to a lot of experts about five G. and what a lot of analysts have found is. People are only kind of buying five G. because that's the option that they have like all Samsung phones in the US now are five G.. So if you wanted a new Samsung phone, you're getting five G. phone you may be just don't even care that it has five G. it. But the hope is with apple getting into this market. It's not just oh yeah, this is the phone I have to get. It's more like Oh yeah. Here are some real reasons why five G. is useful definitely be interesting to see how apple markets five G. especially as as you said, like other people have struggled to really make a compelling pitch for five G. especially with all of us lockdown and not really on. The go take advantages on that network speeds.

I was told all were sent abroad they're big in China and so loud here to the United States and the legend line is mostly from years that they don't own a big contract with I think the top of the line one is the Raffi Channel wine, but that's beside the point. These are all affordable by not being part of the package which state this one lists for nineteen, but I've seen a line for like 11:50 about 15, maybe a little higher there depending on the area, so it's not crazy and it's a mortal long and what Mortal blog means it's blocked and in Bordeaux. They had some semi on to their job your home. So if you like Sally on blood you're gonna like more table. Just goes to show and this is the drinking as a 2019. It's a drinker now young one. I'm just kind of knows it out and just makes it bad and plump and juicy but still right and delicious in the fight was wrong, you know, why you're not drinking a beer and wine. "I do WanNa flip the page to Rica's point some teams. That have worked very hard to get to this point. We've got eleven teams. Charlie that have punched their ticket so far to go dancing any surprises for you in the ache you I think we have one out. West correct so In the last couple of days of the West Coast Conference Tournament Portland is your winner. And they will now go to the tournament. they upset didn't zag in the semifinals and they will catch a little bit of. Portland's game yesterday in the championship when I flew into Vegas and they're upset of of Gonzaga disrupted. That's the surprise. It's SORTA disrupted the bubble a little bit because when you when you take it to my Portland who was not going to make it as an at large but Gonzaga certainly is well now the WC goes from having one team in the field to two teams in the field. Well he can only still sixty four teams so someone has to come out of the field to accommodate Portland's entrance and that affects the at large teams on the bubble and in the case of my bracket that not Boston College. Back out of the field. Who just a day earlier had slid into the field because there was another loss by someone else so everything with this in the championship weeks at circumstances everything affects something else because it's a numbers game. It's a sixty fourteen field no matter how you slice it so going forward and these next few days. We've got some other tournaments that could affect that in the same way and I mentioned this going back a week or so ago that their watch out for the bids steelers because there are certain mid majors that we know we're going to be in the field. They've earned the right to be in. The field is at large teams if they don't also go in there if they don't go in AH automatic qualifiers by winning their tournament. Well then that's an extra team that we didn't account for and brackets and that's an extra team now that the committee has to put into the field. That's one less team that can make it from some of these bubble team. So yeah the the big upset so far has been in the West Coast Conference in Gonzaga. Not Winning it and we've got some more to look forward to. The MAC happens to be one of those tournaments where there's not going to be. Any fans will central Michigan won the league pretty decisively. This year is a top twenty. Rpi team and most assuredly will make the field but now that tournament played before no one could be one of those that affects how the bubble teams go to central Michigan. Does it also come on? Come out on top in the tournament So that's that's certainly one for fans to watch as we go forward and you're GONNA have to watch it on TV because you're not gonna be able to buy it you're watching on TV though you will hear my voice. Maybe the committee views them a little differently. Not Quite not quite at that level so that he's talking about eleven seed. Well that's a vulnerable team to some of the upset potential. We just talked about so what that win for Iowa State. I think is put to rest any question that they'd be in the field although I think there was a big one anyway but it but it certainly nails it down and they no longer would have. I don't think any anxious moments watching the selection show on Monday Now it's just GonNa be a matter of where do they go? And whom do they play? But I think that's what did for for I would say for sure and it would what it did do for. Baylor though while not it's not gonNA knock him out of a one seed it. Does maybe raise some questions. I personally didn't think that there was anything to worry about with. Frankly there weren't a lot of flaws there but the big twelve not not one of the better leagues in the country this year of the power. Five Leagues I think it's probably fifth and they haven't been severely tested in a while and I always say certainly did that and the it might raise some question marks about Baylor going forward. I think they can answer any of those questions in the big twelve tournament because I was sneaking suspicion. They're going to come out with a little extra in that game and it could be ugly for the other. Big Twelve teams In the big twelve tournament but that said it does it. It shows little vulnerability that I didn't think Baylor had and that makes it a little more intrigued when we get to the tournament. Time itself I agree with you one hundred percent. I know look at the box. Were trying to figure out what the deal was. And nothing really was like crazy glaring. But I do think you're right. I know a ton of folks are going to be studying that tape to see what I was able to do right well that was able to watch some of that game and when I did was really slow the Temple. They hope to threes in the second half. They made more threes than they made. Twos in the game and the believer and it was and it was so slow paced and Baylor never found a rhythm that they they say clog everything inside the Lauren Cox had almost no room to move it. Kinda dared the Baylor shooters to shoot and they just had one of those games where they weren't making shots so maybe at least down a blueprint for some other teams as to how to at least approach Valer Ago You mentioned as an example Yukon being a number two seed and I know over the past few years you have seen to have had all these regional conferences in such a favorable area. I think at the Albany region that they mostly have been seated but this year they would be projected number two in the Portland region and I think as much as we talk about Yukon not being the same Yukon is as pass. There's still a very good basketball team. Won thirty nine. Oh in their conference over these last few years in the American and I think that having them with the possibility of travel really makes this team look a little different because they aren't the same team as years pass. Tell us a little bit about how that could affect their performance. Assuming they make the sweet sixteen you're right and Seven out of the last eight years. They've either played in Albany. Bridge for for Kingston Rhode Island. So they they have not had to get on an airplane until the final four in seven out of those those eight years. But let's let's be honest earned it ju- every one of those years with the possible exception of last year because they were the best team in the country in those years too so and when when cities bid for these regionals it just so happened that that all those years those particular low cows bid and got regionals to be able to host. And you can't happen to be close so this year. Those regionals are don't exist. There is no Albany. There is no Kingston. There is no bridgeport and no matter what was going to have to get on an airplane. And you're right. I think it will look a little bit. Different seeing a yukon in a faraway place. I don't think it's going to impact on the whole Locke. Though to be honest I think the people that are bothered by the possibility of uconn going West are the players and the coaching staff. Everything I've heard from them is like. Hey we'll bring it on. We'll play wherever we'll play whomever we'RE NOT THAT CONCERNED ABOUT. Gino's been been pretty adamantly over the years but this year when the subject's soon kinda shrug your shoulders. Look I you know. I don't have any control over it and we'll go play and it will do what we do and I think he said the other night after the the American championship game. We'll do what we do. I hope I think That's sort of the philosophy that they're gonNA take me. Maybe their fans aren't happy and maybe people who who look at the tournament and see certain things as they view them. Unfair that a team that is fifth overall. My take would be the one that has to travel. Based on the fact that other teams can can drive to the region. So we'll get into the reason why you would be going to Portland is very simply that The NC Double A. Would prefer as much as possible that teams that can drive rather than fly two games that they're gonNA play It's written right in the procedures principles of putting the bracket together that mode of transportation distance from campus. Things that they consider will this year Louisville can drive the Fort Wayne Regional? Nc State can drive to the Greenville regional. So if you assume that those are those are two of the other number number two seeds. Then they're going to be plotted in those regions and then the other one being Stanford and Stanford mashed up with Oregon would would also violate one of the principles of putting the bracket together and they They try to keep teams seeded on the top four lines from the same conference separate. So they're so they're in different regions. They wouldn't even meet until the final four now. In this case the fact twelve might have five teams in top sixteen making that impossible but in years past when that's happened the committee's not put one a one and a two. They've put fit when a four again. So it's highly highly unlikely that Oregon at Stanford Movie Place Together which only leaves one region left for Yukon to go to which is Portland matched up with. Oregon is the one in the two. So that's the why behind it and I think we talked about the the what or in the case of I think the Yukon players coaches the. So what I don't know that they that it matters to them very much but it does create an interesting conversation around how the tournament is bracketed. And some of these rules. That maybe fans aren't quite as aware of in the the head-scratching that I get from from fans and social media. Say Well if you cons five. They should be matched up with the number four overall team based on the curve. And that's Maryland so they should be going to Fort Wayne. Well we don't ever. The S curve is used to plot the teams in the tournament. But it's not used strictly to place them in these numerical matchups one in eight go together. Two and seven go together. It's never worked that way. It doesn't work that way in the men's tournament. The committee will try to do that as much as possible. That's the goal. But if you've got these graphical instances at hand as well then there there's other ways to balance the bracket and. That's I think what's going to happen. This year with
