"So, you know, that's the book is chock full of those ideas as visiting Japan a few years ago with my son, and it was talking to an elderly person. And I was asking I always ask them what their tips on locked heavily. She goes I drink a glass of water in the morning. What's the big deal about that? And she goes, no every morning before my feet hit the ground. I have a glass of water about twelve ounces that. Room temperature that before going to the bathroom. I drink this glass a lot. And so I started doing the science on the research on talking to doctors and researchers about it. And what I found was your body needs seven hours of sleep to regenerate the new cells, but then the debt cells that are in your body in less. They're flushed out stay remain in your body can do bad things to what gives you Alzheimer's cancer. And so on so what what are most people do in our country. They their feet hit the ground. They go to bathroom. And then the first thing they do is drink a huge Cup of coffee. Now, the the average person during the night will lose fifteen to twenty ounces of fluid, and what do you do you replenish it with coffee acade- hydra to right? So when I talked to this Japanese woman, she said that will clear up your brain, FOX. So I started doing this drinking twelve fourteen ounces of of of room temperature water, but my day. Was completely different. The brain fog alleviated. I had more energy. It started my metabolism. I started lose weight. So little simple tricks like this. And then I found out people in Japan have been doing this for hundred years. So little little simple tips. Like, this can relate change your world change your body change. My all that's pretty fantastic. And I know you're all about living well and living long, and that's part of the subtitling your book, tell me more about your book. And what what got you into writing this book called thirty summers more. Yeah. You know, I've cared for about sixty thousand people over the course of my career. And so one of the things that I thought was would be interesting to kind of, you know, do some kind of chronology of all these people and see why they left whether live to this age, you know, and I think I have some wisdom about that over the last thirty some years, and so I started writing this book five years ago at about. Four or five months into it. I had this horrible medical issue at a a gastrointestinal bleed and ended up in the hospital. And I told my wife says bring my manuscript in a work on it in hospital. It was it was a pretty severe situation. They thought they were going to have to do a blood transfusion at everything they possibly surgery, and I started reading this book, and I thought, wow, this isn't about you know, the people that that I've cared for. This is about me. This is about the wisdom that I have reverie forty fifty sixty year old and say, hey, we don't have infant amount of time on this planet. You know in at that time, I said, I probably got thirty good summers. More, you know. And so what can I teach people that, you know, myself having this medical epiphany? What can I teach people? And so I got on the train. I lost almost fifty pounds. I ate differently. You know, I started picking up. All these tips. I exercise differently. I even changed the kind of television I wash what time I watched it by sleep patterns. I became more cutesy aware of those. You know, everything I did down to the purpose that I had in my life, which is a big thing for on Chevy to the relationships. I had friends I had everything else. I recreated my life. And you know, I'm sixty years old now, and I feel like I'm forty years old. And so, you know, everybody thinks longevity is latched to genetics. Now, I spoke to probably thirty geneticists. No one can agree on exactly what percentage it is. But most will say is between eighteen and twenty three percent of your longevity connects with your genetics. That means seventy five eighty percent of its within your control, those are things that you can do to change your life to look better live longer that you can you can do today. And so that's what got excited about it. You know, I probably wouldn't have written this book if they said, hey, ninety percent of your lunch. Evidence is is ruled by your Connecticut. Because like what's the point right might as well, eat hamburgers and French fries the rest of your life and lay on the couch. But I so you got really excited.

"It was so many things that could have it in that moment. And it's the reason Rams are going to the Super Bowl team. Hang around. Yeah. Let them, hey. Because they let us hanging around. I mean, we. Went up playing great in the first half. They couldn't hear the office. Was you could tell it man, the offer them because you really couldn't hear in that statement. I say we had we went in thirteen ten and half. I said, oh, we don't win this game. I think it's going to try to we don't want to lose it. We don't wanna lose it. And that's exactly what happened. I think a point accurate member. Who said I think eagle plays a role in this all this hype around sham McVeigh, and Sean McVay as the next Sean Payton, I think some of that crap into Sean Payton, you're thinking in terms of there's a conservative way to go ahead and win this game. But you want to deliver the Dag try to bury them try to try to marry instead of just taking wasn't there and was given because when you look at it Now Sean McVay won the game with his fake punt early. He did undermine the whole. He is the next Sean Payton, and maybe the next Bill Belichick. I think ego played a role in. And I might you made the point. And I think it's indisputable. We disagreed on one thing when you said that we should have went for the touchdown the fourth and one you take the points. Tell you the point you take you take it away win. He would conservative. We did that and week nine. We didn't take the points and wind up losing because it that put us in a bad situation. We would have been up three. Instead, we're going down three and losing by ten. "And we find the capsules are very easy to take a little easier to swallow, but they're very effective. And on that note, I had an adult lady come to me last week. And she just cannot swallow pills. We do have a powder made easy. I'm at the office to that's a great flavor. Right. And that's easier. Right. And we have the magnesium glycemic seventy five to if if they don't need a mix that would be a smaller capsule it smaller so lots of options. Okay. So we've talked quite a bit about the importance of eating real, whole foods and Lynch. Eighteen or avoiding the processed foods and the high sugar drinks, and we talked about how sugar creates inflammation, which can decrease blood flow. It can create more pain and overall simply put it works against the healing process. But JoAnne, I'm thinking we should get a little more specific for our listeners. What do you say we share some specific real foods that helped the healing process? Okay. And the question many of you are asking is what should I eat to support that healing? So whether it's after a cataract surgery after a knee surgery or a gallbladder surgery or surgery to remove a cancerous tumor, I do have a quick story about a small spot of skin cancer that I had on my face last summer was too small for me to even see but amazing the size of the wounds that I ended up with that needed a deep because they needed go long enough. So there wasn't a big, you know. So there wasn't a big gap when they staged it. So I had that surgery early last summer about three or four weeks after the surgery was my it was my second recheck appointment the doctor was commenting on how quickly I was healing. Because at that point in time, she could barely even see. The the wound and the stitches she had put in. She said, you're healing very quickly and faster than most that I've seen and I said, I said, I know why my nutritionist so good, and I was extremely careful tonight. Overloaded? Careful avoiding anything. I shouldn't eat. That's wonderful. So I I said by nutrition and she said, oh, well, maybe and I said I eat a lot of protein vegetables, healthy fats, taking probiotics. You know? So she's like, yeah. Maybe you could be right matters. We know you're right. We notification for the doctor just keep putting it out there. Sinks in for them. It was good. Good for you. Yeah. And that's what I wanted to talk about is that first and foremost, our body needs plenty of protein, and like you said JoAnne, you're eating plenty of protein following any surgery, whether it's a little small incision or a big surgery your body needs a higher amount of protein and iron and think about you know, I think about my cousin that had knee surgery recently, and they had to really move some things and manipulate some things because that knee and that leg were so crooked. So your muscles may have been potentially moved manipulated or damaged during surgery. And now they need to be repaired. So when we eat that animal protein in our digestive system that protein just to give you a little biochemistry is broken down into its smallest parts, which are called amino acids, and it's these amino acids, which then helped to repair. And help the healing process by regenerating tissue. And that is the piece that is really critical for wound. Healing the regenerating of that tissue. Now. In addition protein is the source for many key minerals, especially iron. So when you're eating animal protein at breakfast animal protein at lunch animal protein at dinner, and maybe at a couple of snacks in between the iron in that meet will help you regain your energy levels. And this is because iron helps to create new blood cells. Now, I fully understand I've been there sometimes after a procedure or after a surgery, you're just not hungry for meat, but we really encourage you to really try your best to eat at least nine ounces of animal protein, and you can spread that out into very small servings throughout the day. Now, it would even be more beneficial if you could eat twelve to fourteen ounces of. Animal protein throughout the day. But at the very least nine and if you were to ask me what are some good sources of animal protein. I would say anything that you like to eat that's an animal protein. That's your best source. So and we do prefer that you eat grass fed. So whether it's grass fed beef grass fed, pork grass fed chicken or Turkey. Whatever you enjoy. The most would be a great choice also wild caught fish, especially the fattier fish like, salmon and mackerel and halibut because then you'll get those omega three fatty acids, that's a whole 'nother show, we know make three fatty acids are anti inflammatory so that can help speed up the healing process. And let's not forget eggs, organic eggs are also a great choice for animal protein. Think it's time for break. Now. I think we better take that final break. If you're just now tuning in. I'm Cassie Wenas..

"To do over. Again. I would have made a different kind of pie. The pie through at Mark made terrific mass. But a blueberry pie would have been even better since it would permanently ruined his new blazer the one he bought with Thelma? But that he said bring a key lime pie. So I did. The key lime pie is very simple to make. I you line a nine inch pie plate with the Graham. Cracker crust beat six egg yolks. Add one Cup lime. Juice even bottled lime juice will do to fourteen ounce cans, sweetened, condensed milk and one tablespoon. Graded lime rind pour into the pie shell and freeze removed from freezer and spread with cream. Let's sit five minutes before serving. I realize now that I should have thrown the pie or at least done the thinking that led to the throwing of the pie several weeks earlier than I did. But it's very hard to throw a pie someone when you're pregnant because you feel vulnerable. Also, let's face it. I wasn't ready to throw the pie. I should add that the pie was hardly. The first thing that I thought about throwing it Mark. But every other time I'd wanted to throw something Adam. I couldn't bring myself to do it once for example, right after I found out about him Thelma I'd been seized by a violent impulse. But the only thing I could see to throw at the time was assigned to tonic chair, and I am far to Bush wa to thrill assigned time at anything at anyone sometime later, especially while I was in the hospital. I gave considerable thought to smashing marks head in with a very good frying pan that I had bought at the bridge kitchenware company. But I always knew that I would never do anything of the sort. And in any case smashing your husband's head in with the frying pan seems slightly to fraud with feminist content. If you know what I mean? Even now. I wonder if I would have thrown the pie if we'd been eating in Betty's dining room, probably not on the floor in Betty's dining room is a beautiful oriental rug and I would have been far too concerned about staining. It fortunately, though, we were eating in the kitchen and the kitchen has a linoleum floor. That is how joie I am at the split second. I picked up the pie to throw it at Mark at the split second. I was about to do the bravest, albeit the most derivative thing that I've ever done in my life. I thought to myself thank God, the floor's linoleum and can be wiped up. On Saturday afternoon Betty called. I went out for a walk to buy ingredients. I took Sam with me we had a long talk about how Nathaniel would be coming home from the hospital on Monday, and how much Sam was gonna love him. And how he was going to feed him, some delicious, spiders, and we bought food at Nimes. It was a beautiful day. So we decided to walk down to the toy store on m street. And on the way, we passed the jewelry store where Mark had bought me the diamond ring, and I remember that I hadn't taken it in yet to have it fixed. It was in a little envelope in my purse. I could see Leo Rothman. The owner sitting on a stool behind the counter, Leo, the deer white haired man who had marched with the ABRAHAM LINCOLN brigade in the thirties and been thrown out of the lake. Department in the forties. Was now a millionaire jeweler who buzzed only white people through his electrically operated door. He buzz me in and gave me a big kiss. When Mark was courting me when he was pursuing me with flowers and balloons and Jewel's Leo was the man that Mark bought the jewels from and as a result, Leo felt almost proprietary about our marriage. He outfitted the courtship, the winning the birth of the first child the first child, silver spoon, and she didn't seem to mind that except for the diamond ring. None of Mark's purchases had amounted to more than a few hundred dollars. I told Leo about the robbery. And he said, it would just take a minute to reset the stone. Salmon, I waited while he got out his instruments and went to work. We were making conversation. Chitchat nothing much. She said did I know the diamond in the ring was a perfect stone. I said Mark told me that he said it wasn't the kind of diamond I'd ever have trouble selling if I ever wanted to. He told Mark that he would be glad to buy it back for what Mark had paid for it. And I said I was glad to hear that. He asked me how I like the necklace. The necklace. I said. Leo looked up and the loop dropped from his I must be thinking of another customer. He said, no, no, no, you're not. I said I knew had bought me something while I was in the hospital. So he had bought her a necklace for her birthday. I was lying in the hospital with a two knows. And he had bought her a necklace that rascal. I said, oh, I shouldn't have said anything real sad. Glad you did. I said now, I know what to be prepared for there is nothing worse than opening box with a necklace in it when you're not in the close. I kept talking. I couldn't stop once. I said I was in the mood for a nightgown and Marquette dropping hints about what he got me for my birthday. And Finally, I said I don't care what it is as long as it's not a suitcase was my face red. Leo was focused on the ring. Again. I board him. So thoroughly he barely grunted. A response. He finished resetting, the stone and handed the ring back to me. It was such a beautiful ring the diamond caught the afternoon sun made a rainbow on the wall of the store. Sam ran to the reflection. I waved the ring this way and that moving the rainbow while he giggled and lapped and tried to catch it in his hands. How much I said, oh, no charge. Leo said now how much for the ring? I said. How much would you give me for the ring? Leila. Looked at me. You don't really want to sell it. He said, oh, no. I really want to sell it. I said do you really want to buy it? Of course, he said, oh, I love the ring. Leo. But it really just doesn't go with my life. It would never have been stolen in the first place. If I hadn't been wearing it on the subway, and if you've got to renew, Pat where on the subway, what's the point of having it? It's sort of like getting a mink coat if I had a mink coat. I would have to take every time I'm in New York. And the next thing, you know, we'd be even broker than we are. Now, Mark is so romantic he probably spent every penny of his savings on the necklace. Leo nodded for the down payment. He said. For the down payment. I said. It's a beautiful necklace said Leo. Now, I have a beautiful necklace. I won't be able to wear on the subway either. I said how much for the ring? Fifteen thousand Leo said fifteen thousand I said, that's what Mark paid for it. Said my heart started pounds. I realized that I had just been given the means to walk out of my marriage. Fifteen thousand it is I said to Leo ten years had passed the cost of walking out of a marriage had gone up. I went home with Leo's check and made the pie. I was in a trance. Well, perhaps it wasn't a transfer. But it was as close to a transit. I'll ever get. I was speechless. I said nothing nothing at all for several hours. At eight Mark. And I took the pie to Betty's. It was just us me. Mark, Betty and demetri who Betty lives with when we got to Betty's, Mark. And Dimitri went into the kitchen to boil the lobsters, and Betty, and I sat in the living room while Betty talked about the dance that she Intel, and I were apparently giving apparently we were giving it at the cell grave club. Apparently, the crap man had already been booked apparently all that was lacking was my guest lists Thelma and Betty had already drawn upstairs, and apparently the Kissinger's or on thelma's list. Just as I predicted. I sat and listened and drank an entire bottle of white wine as Betty went on and on. And by the time dinner. I was tipsy. We ate the lobsters. I don't remember the conversation. I do remember realizing that no one seemed to be noticing that. I hadn't said anything the entire evening. And that no one seemed to mind I must try this again. I thought I must try again some day to sit still and not say a word, maybe when I'm dead. After the lobsters I took. The key lime pie out of the freezer and put the whipped cream on it. And sat it in front of me? I was going to give it five minutes to thaw slightly recipe. And that's when Betty turned to me. And she said Rachel, you didn't tell me about Richard. And helen. What about Richard? And Helen said Mark. Well, they're getting a divorce said, Betty, I bumped into him this week in New York. I always hated. That woman said Mark, I sorta liked her said Dmitri when did you meet her said, Betty here said Dmitri Rachel and Mark brought them over one night. No one else would talk to her. So I did she wasn't so bad. You were the only person on this earth who's ever found anything even halfway nice to say about her said Betty. She left Richard for her secretary said Betty, did, you know, this Rachel said, Mark, I nodded I couldn't get over it. I kept thinking about it on the shuttle on the way home. How could you know, someone for that long? How how long have they been together as long as Rachel, and I have said Mark exactly said, Betty, how could you be with someone that long be married to them? And not know she has to have known said Dmitri, I knew well, he says he didn't know said Betty. How can you be married to someone and not know something like that? Oh, maybe it wasn't true. When he first met her said Dmitri, of course, it was true said Betty, don't just become a dyke bang like that. Sure, you do said Dmitri, it's like being allergic to strawberries, eat, strawberries, all your life and then one day bang. You get hives don't be ridiculous said Betty. I was starting to get dizzy. Wraps. I ought to say something I thought either that or I'm going to fall into the pie. Perhaps I ought to say that it is possible. Perhaps I ought to say that you can love someone or want to love someone. So that you don't see anything at all you decide to love him you decide to trust him, you're in the marriage in the day to day of the marriage. And you kind of notice that things aren't what they were. But it's a distant bell through a filter. And then when something does turn out to be wrong. It isn't that you knew all along. It's that you were somewhere else. He must have been living. In a dream said, Betty, she stood up to get the coffee cups and Dmitry were discussing detente. In a dream, I suppose, so. And then the dream breaks into a million tiny pieces the dream dies, which leaves you with a choice. You can settle for reality. Or.

"Right, let's see going we have Kathy on the line from the Ozark mountains in Arkansas hey Kathy I'm fine thanks how are you I'm great thank you what should. We, discuss Well. Someone. Gave me what? I think. Is a. Big fan of anchovies Very much alike anchovies the little small ones I've gotten on pizza Rancho be paced? And, things. Or maybe in what is it and Caesar salad dressing yeah absolutely this can though is like fourteen ounces and it says it, contains or anchovy fillets olive oil and salt and before openness big can I wanna know what? I can do with them or how I can keep them, longer if? I, don't, use. Them all up. At at the first you know sure sure sure Well someone gave me? A big can ancho is the beginning of a great southern, gothic short? Story. So, this Did you say there were, four anchovies in the cans yeah that's and I'm looking at a picture. Of. The, can. Because I'm at work. But I. Had, taken a picture so I could. Like look on it yeah oh no it has, six pieces. I'm sorry All right sorry about that those pieces but even six? Anchovies, to a fourteen ounce can I mean these are these are like the great, white shark of anchovies it sounds like it and I have to confess. I've. Never, seen. That kind of anchovy. Before and Ban but okay so let's assume despite their size they will kind of act like regular anchovies And I think you know I I adore anchovies I truly truly love them and. I, never really understood why they. Have such a bad, rap until actually because, you, mentioned pizza I I got a pizza recently got, anchovies. On it and I was like whoa those. Do not, smell like beautiful salty fish anymore, though. Smell, like maybe a salty Fisher's locker. Room and yeah they had, that like metallic flavour salty oh this is. Why people hate these my husband doesn't like them but such a bummer because a good, anchovy and. I assume if this is like, giftable anchovy Scampi they're going to be great Is so delicious and I think there's so many things you can do with, them and things, you can do, with them that do not scream hey I am anchovy just they'll just make things tastier, and they'll make things more savory and. Had a real depth of flavor of without that without that, sort of intimidating, quality and I think the most basic way to kind, of bring. That aspect of. Anchovies out is, to basically, melt, them and hot. Oil or hot fat it's, a weird thing but they they do tend to dissolve and almost not like liquid plastic lava but. Just, kinda dissolve if you have. A pan of olive, oil or I love, them, in butter get hot not blazing hot but you, know. Just kind of get the oil nice and. Warm the, fat nice and warm the buddies, maybe. Melted, a foaming and you drop you. Can start with one little, fillet or if they're big like you say. Like just kind of cut them into regular fillet size I guess and just kinda Saute them lightly and you'll see that, they will. Start to disintegrate And and, the kind of toast, and they'll Brown and you. Get so many those rich Brown flavors, the ad that nice saltiness and. If you then put garlic onions you can. Start sauce, like, that it's a. Great way to start tomato sauce in fact oh Yeah, if you're just doing like. A normal tomato sauce marinara type of, sauce but started with a couple. Of anchovies it adds a real deep beautiful layer of. Flavor So yeah I would start playing with those kinds of, things anything you would start a pan. With onions and garlic and, could use, a little depth maybe drop a flare to in some cases in you can go bananas their whole pastas many a pasta dinner I've eaten where it's just you know half. A dozen anchovy fillets an olive oil and garlic. And. Toss up with a bunch of pasta and maybe, a little bit of, herbs on top and squeeze lemon juice. And I'm like the happiest, camper on the block So yeah so it's just a great way to to add an initial base of flavor that just you'll taste all the. Way throughout but won't be like hey I'm anchovy Well that is great I really appreciate it I'm gonna try. Making maybe. A. Tomato, sauce. I and seeing how I. Like, that and. Either keeping the anchovies longer maybe making up more that tomato sauce and freezing it just tomato sauce free beautifully okay well good you've helped. Me, a, lot oh my pleasure and if you really wanna get adventurism if you really like them that why suggest doing one time, is mashing them up, in, cold butter So you have this buttery anchovy flavor And, then next time you grill a steak throw a little Pat butter on top of the steak and would have knelt. On, top. Right, before you serve it oh good yeah that's real good that I. Can do that. At my parents house. They. Like anchovy her fell like anchovies perfect I wanna serve them. Up, to people.
