Small Greenhouses: The How, What, and Why
"Wanna pick up an idea that somebody sent us in an e mail. Few months ago where they asked us to comment about some small ikya greenhouses now for people who don't know key is a big furniture store right. Coup doesn't kia. Well some people may not know but evelyn e. you know about these greenhouses. What what exactly are people asking about. What are they talking about here. It especially if you live in a small home or a small apartment and you don't have a lot of window space or your apartment very dry. These miniature greenhouses can be very appealing because it gives you some dedicated growing space. And it's a way to increase the humidity. Which for some house. Plants is really important. It cracks me up when i see these on pinterest planted with charming little succulents. Because that's the last plant that really needs the increased humidity of greenhouses fact. You're you're probably going to be doing them a disservice unless you leave that. Many greenhouse open all the time. But but i can't actually makes one called soccer and i'm sure that if i spoke swedish would pronounce that better which is very cute and actually functions and the reason that it functions is because the roof is hinged so you can open it up and have full complete to the inside of the little greenhouse and it's small it's like about eighteen inches wide and fourteen inches tall but you could still fit some really pretty smaller plants that need high humidity in a little greenhouse like that. But there it's a maiden hair furner erects or an apiece or something that needs increased shop but don't waste it on a bunch of succulents. That's not really what you need to do for them. And it's probably not large enough to grow any amount of food in either right now. It really isn't. And i get so frustrated when i see these things. Online that are not realistic. That set people up to fail. Because you have a bad experience with something like that and it's gonna turn you off from growing plants completely. If you wanted to start a few seeds in one of these little greenhouses you could certainly do that. But it's not enough. You're not going to be able to grow more than maybe like a basil plant or a rosemary. Plant something in there. It's just they're just not big enough on but the thing to watch out for especially is read the descriptions if you're looking online a lot of these things that are just charming are not functional. There are some beautiful like brass and glass greenhouses up there little mini ones. That would fit on a tabletop and they sit on a tray and the trae is a half an inch deep and to access the planting. You have to lift off the whole glass top. So you've only got a half an inch of soil in there to plant with. That's not gonna work for you the ikya one. Actually you can plant in. And even though it's made out of you know glass it's plastic. It does function. so you could. You could use this. For for instance a almost a terrarium. You could create a little jungle environment in there. Yeah you could and if you if in the ones that let let you actually plant directly in them if you are going to buy one of those beautiful ones that doesn't actually have a solid bottom to it. That's the kind of thing that you're going to have to use like a close. You might just put a couple of pots in there and then put the glass top down on top of the whole thing. But you can't actually plant in soil in that kind of a little mini greenhouse. It's it's almost a display item rather than a functional growing strider. And you need to. It will increase the humidity for those plants. But they need to be individually potted. And i think it's important for people to manage their expectations now I was looking around when when we decided to talk about this. I was looking around. Because i noticed that some people mentioned that you can use these inside or outside and and i'm sure you can put it outside. But why would you want to limit yourself to such tiny thing. If you're doing it outside you know if you want some outside protection so that you can grow more plants on the shoulder seasons early in the spring and and even into the winter there are larger structures. That are much better for this. And i was looking at the gardner supply company which is a company that i'm very fond of up in vermont. An employee owned company. They're wonderful and they have a several structures that fit over standard size raised beds that create this kind of greenhouse effect over a raised bed. The sides come up so that you can get in there and tend your plants you know. And you've got that protection that carries you into the winter or early in the spring and very reasonably priced. Yes and those are a much better. Bet if you're talking about outdoor growing for many reasons because they're they're lightweight they're plastic. You can fold them up in store them easily when the growing season is completely over and they give you much more space than a tiny little kia. Terrarium is going to give you. But if you are interested in doing this indoors and you want a little more space than the ikea soccer will give you my swedish accent soccer so you could just take and this is what i used to do. I would just. I would buy big old aquariums flea markets and garage sales and this was something it may not be quite as cute and charming as something that was intended to be greenhouses concerned. But it solid. It's all glass. So you've got a really strong thing there that you can plant directly in and it's going to give you more growing space so if you're somebody who's just been dying to grow a maiden hair fern or something that requires higher humidity than you can give it in your apartment. Start looking for those old fish tanks because those will really serve your purpose probably better than anything you can buy new

Looking for a MacBook Air alternative? Here are your best options
"With kids about to head back to school either in person or Colle- laptops. Are. Front. And Center. Now Michalak. Air is a popular option. There's actually a pretty wide world outside of Mackerel S I'm Roger Chang and this is your charge. With me laptop expert and senior reviewer Josh Goldman. Thanks for joining me. Josh. Thanks for having me, Roger. So we're getting close to back to school season and who knows what? That's really gonNA look like you know we've got folks potentially going my kid's GonNa. Go to school with a bunch of people doing remote learning But with that said, parents will generally WANNA decent laptop for their kids no matter what their ages at this point Just start things off do you have a general tips for people on the hunt for Nick Peter? The, the one thing having you know, ended the the last school. In Quarantine the one thing I did learn from that was if you can afford to get it laptop with a larger screen than the eleven point six inch screen that most of the kids have on their chromebooks. chromebook obviously, he became really popular with schools. Except they went with models that have eleven point six inch screens which are very difficult for navigating the world of online learning. A lot of the online learning tools require more screen space so that the kids can actually see what they're doing and I think if you're going to invest in a laptop for your kid this season, get them something with at least a thirteen inch display fourteen if possible or even larger if he can. So what about touchscreen is that something that's necessary or is that more of a luxury I don't know that it's a luxury some or necessary I think it's just something that you can get these days as far as I'm concerned. touchscreens of the future everybody uses their phone all day long that's a touch screen tablets touchscreens. It makes sense for kids to have a touchscreen because that's how they're used to communicating with computers these days so. If you can get one with a touchscreen. Great. I don't think it's going to be a detriment though if you don't get one with a touchscreen and since we're talking about MAC books anyway or air replacement. macbook airs don't have touchscreens anyway. So if you're GONNA go macbook air, then you're not getting a touchscreen anyway. But one of the luxuries of gone with windows is you can get them with touchscreen. So catching and the MAC book air has been a popular option for a long time for students particularly college students But generally, what are some of the big reasons why you'd want to consider alternative is far as an alternative? if want to go with the chromebook, it's because that's what your school district is on. That has that makes things a lot easier than. Going with a separate operating system like windows or Mac os but the bigger thing for a lot of people going back to school is whether or not there their software that they need to get through school is going to work with the operating system that they have other than that it's more or less just learning to deal with the different features in the different houses. So it's not. I wouldn't say that like the OS is a big issue, but it's certainly an issue and you WanNa, just make sure what you're using his compatible with the operating system that you're going. Guys let's start with windows the the most popular operating system out there. What are some of the best options for a windows laptop. So if we're going to stick with the like as a macbook air replacement the macbook air has over the years been the most popular option for kids in school and or in college in high school students but they're. Obviously the the windows PC makers figure that out pretty quick and made a lot of laptops that look and behave in everything that MAC book air. So you've got things like. If you WANNA go really premium. Got Things like the daleks ps thirteen or the HP Specter which have a lot of the same design touches and it's just a super premium long battery life good performance and around thousand dollars. which is what you're dealing with with the macbook air. You're still at around that thousand dollar price point for their starting configuration. You can as usual get a better deal with with windows than you can with Mac. He'll usually get more features better processor, those kind of things with you go with windows. If you want to go. So those two that I mentioned her thirteen inch. If you want to go a little bit larger, my personal recommendation for most people is the Lenovo. Yoga. See Seven, forty, it's a two and one. So it's a little bit more flexible. It's a fourteen inch little bit larger screen, but still a nice compact package really good battery life really good performance and you can get it for less than a thousand dollars yen full disclosure I took joshes advice in actually purchased one. My wife and I are very happy with it so. On Josh thank you, it is it. It's one of those laptops that looks and feels like a Mac Book Air Bit and a you just getting you're getting more for your money with it. If, you want to go even less expensive on windows I like the acer swift three, which is running amd's latest rising processors and those the the processing performance you're getting out of that is like twice that of more more expensive laptop. So it's it's or should I say the processing performance is that of a laptop that's twice as expensive. Because as the swift three starts at around six hundred dollars and it's a three pound laptop fourteen inch display really really nice. Good. Battery Life But yeah, it's it's really cheap with good performance.
How Much of Our Food Do Moths Pollinate?
"Bees are not doing well. Since the mid two thousand colony collapse disorder has been taking out the world's most famous plant pollinator all over the world, these pont, one third of the plant's we eat from oranges, almonds a service worth some one hundred sixty eight billion dollars a year by the way, and their rapid disappearance is worrying farmers worldwide. But what if there a secret army of pollinators? Sneaking around the plants we rely on most it could be good news for food security, or it could be a neutral factor if these insects are susceptible to the same or similar pressures as BS. A study published in May of Twenty Twenty and the journal Biology letters has found moths playing much bigger part in pollinating plants than anybody imagined possibly visiting a bigger variety of plant species than bees, and doing it under the cover of darkness. Scientists didn't just realize overnight that moths pollinate plants. The problem was much of the research was limited to a few specific types of moths the. Spend a lot of time rooting around in flowers like hawk. Moths which have extraordinarily long tongues like fourteen inches thirty six centimeters long used for getting it hard to reach nectar reserves within a flower. However over the last decade investigations into how moths as a group contribute to the process of pollination found that your average moth tongue can be a effective tool for moving pollen from plant to plant. This knowledge led the study's authors to turn an eye to the rarely studied settling moths, which sit low and close to flowers and hide out in sheltered spots during the day. We spoke by email with these studies lead author Richard Walton of the University College London Department of Geography. He said our research has for the first time compared moth pollination networks with those of day flying pollinators such as bees hover flies to help us understand illustrate the wide ranging plant preferences. We discovered moths to have in an agricultural setting. We also found that malls were carrying most pollen from the flowers they visited on their furry bodies, which means the means of pollen transport from flower to flower by moths is very similar to bees, hover flies, which also transport most of the pollen on their bodies. Many social bees like bumblebees and honeybees visit lots of different types of flowers, but they also tend to target certain favourite plants that they know will provide plenty of their favorite kinds of pollen and nectar. As a result, some plant species get less attention than others. Walton said solitary bees often be more specialized visiting one type of plant while hover flies often visit flowers with a certain shape. We found that moths visit many different species of plant with a few different types of flower shape. If daytime pollinators do not visit a particular plant species often, but motte species do, and this results in pollination. This increases the chance that this plant would survive for another generation. So because malls are a bit less picky than daytime pollinators, but still get the pollination job done. Plants not preferred by bees persist, maintaining a diverse population of plants is essential to maintaining A. Resilient ecosystem that can weather threats like climate change organization. Conversely with plenty of plants to feed on moths, themselves can continue being an important food source for birds, bats and other insects. The research team observed and collected daytime pollinators as well as nocturnal moths around farm ponds the United. Kingdom and found moth food webs were often comparable to those of daytime pollinators in complexity, and in some instances had greater complexity. Walton said moths are likely providing a kind of resilience or backup to the food webs of daytime pollinators, if a certain species or number of species of bee or butterfly disappears from the landscape, moths potentially fill in that pollination gap. Taking this step further, it's also significant because moth populations are facing severe declines across the globe, as we realize that they're important contributors to the pollination process becomes even more important to protect moth populations because we might be placed ourselves at risk. The researchers found mauled were visiting plants belonging to families that are important to humans as a source of foods like apples, strawberries, pears, peaches, beans, and peas. Walton said this has exciting implications for mall. Being involved in crop pollination, it would help us to move past seeing moths as merely pests, but as important contributors to our own livelihoods.
How Deep Does the Soil Have to Be in a Raised Bed Garden to Grow Tomatoes and Peppers?
"Says she's thinking about putting in a small raised bed small garden on her patio so she can grow a few tomatoes and peppers and she wants to know how deep the soil would have to be. Well that's a good question mark. I'm GonNa stay deep as possible is the best answer now. Let's try to qualify that My uncle and his reclining time go to Mehta's in a water. Water filled apparatus That was only. I think maybe eight inches deep at the very most now. Most people probably aren't going to go into that particular kind of thing so I would say eight inches would be the absolute minimum depth then going to best case scenario eighteen inches is better the whole point being that if if you want to stay with tomatoes and it Cetera they can be and can be productive in a relatively shallower area. She wants to plant any loan stuff carrots then she's got to get down toward that eighteen now to be let's just say as as general in terms of gardening as you can think of. I Have Lois dig down twelve inches or have ever higher young guy with a shovel but anyhow down twelve inches through through that dirt decide on a tarp or for that matter throw it out but I would be inclined to keep a bit big down to that Ten or twelve inch. Ruth range put in minimum two inches of gravel. Now this would be just plain Pulverized gravel if he could even be limestone best but it wasn't but it's okay Three inches is better than put some some landscape cloth over the top of that gravel. So that leaves her with a nine inch depth of actual soil. Now that can be when she's talking about digging or I'm thinking of her digging down. She wants to raise it if she wants to. Stay on top of the ground. Then I would say you're still dealing with what is going to be ten to twelve inches deep Bordered by Goodwood. Or what have you So that you can stay on top of the ground I know well Ash. Ritchie's has been on with me from time to time. Grew blueberries here in Central Ohio on limestone rock because he went into raised beds having been there and pick some of these various and enjoying them. Thoroughly I know that he was not more than twelve inches. Deep with those beds so either down and start. Grab on the bottom or it's still best to put down. Maybe an inch gravel on top of the cle- junk or whatever it is still used hardware cloth then build up the good soil on top of that within boundaries and borders or not Action did not have borders on his his very bad but So it tapered up on over but I think even in the very center of it His soil wouldn't have been much more twelve or fourteen inches deep. So I think that's the best leader recommend four Louis The better drainage you can create on in ground or above ground is best comes in with there being an interface between her new sales repaired. So she's GonNa make whatever And and hard rock junk
How Do I Deal with an Ornamental Banana Plant?
"Banana plan so our kids gave us some For a gift about four years ago and we just really enjoy them and everyone that comes over to our back patio Just feels like they're not tropical Away well now I have limited experience only but one of my my Well I say former friend. He has passed away unfortunately but he got into bananas. Big Time A to the extent he had them in in oil. Fifteen twenty gallon tub and they they They no longer used their pool but the area. The pool is in became the banana house for the winter. Now how how are you using yours? Are they in a container or are they in the ground in the ground? Right next to the PATIO COURSES. You know They can't take the hard freezes. And so I've messed around for three winters with various ways to keep them protected with Straw on things and they came through fine and then my daughter Dad. Why don't you just put bags of Malzahn so I use bag? Mulch realm my other plants. And so I've got bags involved stacked two high Around them the last two winters and I'm competent that they're going to come out This spring with In great shape with with that process will now explain if you would. You're using them as stand up. Barricades is that what I would guess it to be the plug the balls. Yes No. I'm using ball. She just lay them down flat and bump them up together as close as they can get and then over the cracks between the two bags. I put another bag. Lay Down Flat. So you know that's probably a good twelve fourteen inches Malls covering the ground and of course the bag is three feet approximately three feet long. So and it's right up against the concrete patio so it's It's just a marvelous. Job of keeping them insulated. And last year with that process they popped up easily. Actually I took the bags often through them up on the patio Last week and anxious to see the green start buffing. Okay now what you're doing. Is it going to exceed what I would recommend it per se Mulch yes I would have not thought of putting the bag itself right on the ground I I'm not so sure that in a wet period you might get into some decay because of holding too much moisture under the plastic bag. However you're certainly putting on sufficient mulch indepth I would have recommended you simply mulch as you have used it. That is the same hopes that you have used. I would've taken it out of the bag. And then Rick that away as you say last week. B Be Aware now that that I have a concern and I always do in the spring where things are coming on pretty strong right now. Your your bananas should even be breaking up through. The surface very soon is in terms of Not having any freezes coming up All's well in that regard. I'm glad to hear that you have done it that way.

Force Forsythia Branches to Bloom Indoors in the Winter
"Are twenty five or thirty varieties of I From from something in the Arnold Dwarf that will probably never get more about three feet tall wider than that Not a good flowering plant. But it's tough a little plant and then there are forsythias that run in what I'll call the eight to ten foot By eight to ten foot size so don't plant them to close or or be careful that you don't put a forsythias within three feet of a lilac type of thing because they're both going over grow in that situation but for Cynthia with twenty five different cultivars all the floral flow. Well the flowers themselves will be slightly. Different I would like to throw this in terms of Ohio Couple of Thoughts on hardiness in cold weather. There's one called Northern Sun. One called northern gold both are very very good. Flowering plants and both of them will handle flour I'm well length of time. I have seen for Cynthia. Not The plant itself not the foliage but I have seen for Cynthia Bloom as little as six inches above the ground. Fourteen inches above the ground. Or whatever and it's the funniest aren't think what has happened. Is Mother Nature set in and any given short period Killed off all the flowers above the snow. So you're well anyhow those can be brought in and forced also and again bring in some stems one week some another week and a half away and I'd say go ahead and start because I think that we can get him to force right now. I have a couple of the planet him I think two springs ago. Tom And I think this year they're just now going to get to the size and whether filled out in the and they're looking a little bit better so if I want to take off some of the stray stems and is now the time to do that. Well if those are going to be what you force and there are just literally straight stems. Yes I would okay there flowering on buds. That were set last year. So if you take off now enjoy indoors and you could. You won't hurt the plant a bit if it's an older plant in that and you must trim it back so it doesn't eat the side of the

3 Things To Know About Growing Monstera Plants
"We're gonNA start with a kind of a new segment for us It's it's a segment. We're Calling Rolling Plant Rama. One two three if you want to grow a particular plant. We're going to tell you from the plant. Rama point of view the first the second second and the third thing. You need to know to get yourself going the basics get you started fan base. That's right that's right so ellen What is your one one two three about? I want to grow a month's Tara plant. Well I would say the first thing is to figure out before you go and buy yourself a beautiful full monster plant. The first thing is to figure out where you'RE GONNA put it because this can be a large plant. A beautiful plant takes over the universe and it has specific thick light requirements. So That's ellen that's funny because I have as my number one. Do you have the room. It's just not a demure little plant. That's GonNa stay in a four inch pot and politely on your desk. This is a plant that is going to eventually be the size of piano and and I think that's one reason people love it because this is a no-holds-barred. Im Green. I am tropical and I am taken over the living room. Yeah yes and and that that is one of the wonderful things about it and if you have the right spot for where you can let it grow like that. It's relatively trouble free. I think I kind of cheated when I I mentioned two things I mentioned the space and the like okay. Well that's interesting that you say that because My number two is indirect indirect sun naught directly in a sunny window which it makes it a great plant for a lot of people because a lot of people are short on sunny window space. Yes I am the me too so if you can have this plant in a spot where it is bright but it is not in direct sun will still do well. My mother grew a Five to six foot tall monster plant in her assisted stood living room And it was a good I would say seven eight feet away from an eastern facing window perfectly clean and it. It was perfectly happy. That's great. That's right so it is a plant to put a big amount of green in a place that you do. You need some green but it doesn't have to have direct sunlight. All right. Can I do number three. You can do number. Three's I think this is an important one and that is do not over water. Your Mancera this is a plant. That in nature can be an EPA fight which means it doesn't grow with its roots surrounded founded by wet soil all the time and People make the mistake of thinking. Oh it's got these giant tropical leaves need to keep it wet all the time. No you do not stick your finger in the soil and if it's not dry at least an inch down at least below your cheek to your first knuckle. It is not time to water that plant and when you do water at water until water comes out the bottom into the saucer. Don't let it sit in a lot of extra water but you know a big monster in pot. This like twelve to fourteen inches is probably the only gonNA need water every two weeks. It's not it's not a water hog and again I'm going to go back to my mother's assisted living apartment as she got older older. My mother who dearly dearly loved her plants and always had What we think of as to green numbs? She grew more forgetful about out them and so although she loved them she would forget to water them and so some of the plants certainly suffered from that not. I'm not that that monster was just fine with her remembering to water the plant every two to three weeks so so it was a great plan for a little while there. You have it monster or one two three. iFixit’s 16-inch MacBook Pro teardown reveals the old keyboard we know and love
"Another item uh of apples. That's getting a lot of buzz recently. Is that new sixteen inch Mac pro that we talked about on the last episode of the guest the big item besides the the larger screen is of course the redesigned keyboard with the scissors which mechanisms which apple is giving the moniker magic keyboard to match. Its it's desktop model now. We're hearing according to digitize times. That apple plans to bring that same keyboard designed to an updated thirteen inch back but bro. Sometime in the first half of twenty twenty this would also potentially mean that the thirteen inch model would get the physical escape key and the inverted inverted t Arrow key design of the new magic keyboard as well. The report claims that the screen size on the updated thirteen inch macbook macbook pro will likely not get increased. It should remain the same at thirteen point three inches. Although they do hedge their bets a little bit and don't completely rule out apple. Oh possibly doing a bump up to fourteen inches That would better match. I think sixteen inch model. You know doing that screen screen size and increase reducing the vessels but keeping the same form factor. So I'd like to see them go in that direction but maybe to keep costs down. Maybe they don't move that way. This isn't the first time we've heard that apple would update the keyboards in other models in the macbook line Ming Cheek quo believed the entire hire macbook. Lineup would make the transition in twenty twenty. But it's still not clear if the new macbook pro magic keyboard designs will actually filter down to lower cost models like the macbook air as far as how that new sixteen inch model looks on the inside. I fix it. Did they tear down this week and they shared a number of details. Of course it has that larger sixteen inch display. The new scissor switch magic keyboard and handed new thermal architecture along with other updates. They did note that the scissor mechanisms look almost identical to the ones that apple is used in in the past although they do note that they are slightly thinner they also note that there is no membrane there in a little bit more space so they feel that apple is likely very confident that this design won't encounter the same issues as their butterfly design with debris and other elements elements getting caught inside there causing problems. There is a new audio speaker system with a longer speaker enclosure containing opposed woofers on the top and bottom those are designed to minimize vibration. And that's been something that's been noted in earlier reviews that you can get much more volume out of the new speakers and less distortion a lot of times. That distortion does come from vibration and moving of other components opponents the system also has a three microbes of microphone. Design up from two apple claims that those mics are good enough to record a podcast on the built-in Mike's I have a feeling they're gonNA sound really great but as far as recording a quality podcast I doubt it I have heard. podcast where people have used the internal Mike's on existing macbook pros and it's fine as long as they're in a quiet environment but they tend to pick up a lot of room noise so I wouldn't go as far as apple does in making that claim but it should be pretty good sounding set of Mike's another having noted by the I fix it. Tear down is that the batteries are zero point eight millimeters thicker to accommodate the longer lasting. Battery Life It's also likely one of the reasons that this year's twenty sixteen model is slightly thicker than the prior generation and finally as far as that new thermal architecture goes they do note that. The new fans have noticeably larger exhaust holes and are higher performing warming likely to address complaints of thermal throttling under sustained loads on the older models. As a matter of fact I fix it says that the new Fan Dan System pushes about twenty eight percent. Air Twenty eight percent more Air Excuse me through the system so overall the new MAC act book. Pro Design looks to be a winner And should perform very very well so far early reviews indicated that most people are very happy with it especially with the new keyboard which is also a little bit quieter than the prior generation as well which is interesting because apple made a big point of of the fact that the new design would be a little bit quieter more stable and all those other things so I am still very excited and trying very hard. Hard not to Plunk money down on a new sixteen inch model but every day when I read reports like this hearing how much people are really enjoying them. It makes a little little bit harder so there could be a new macbook pro might future. We'll have to wait and see

"Coming down and the fourteen inches of snow that they had gotten in the northeast now. First of all what you need to understand is that northeast is used to getting a lot of snow, and it's wintertime it's supposed to be cold out, especially if you live in the northeast like Boston is not it's not uncommon for those guys to get six eight ten inches. Twelve inches of stuff foot. Snow is not uncommon in Boston as supposed to be cold there. I've was amazed shocked if you wanna know I've told you guys about the snow about st- twisting, the knife, and stirring up the pain it's sales tactic that all of you should be using. And essentially what you're doing. Is your finding a pain or problem, you're exacerbating that pain or problem in the minds of your audience, and then you're solving the pain or problem that people have that's what all marketing is is essentially finding out what hurts and fixing it and then show and people that you can. So they'll buy your stuck gay. So understanding what it is. If you go and watch things like the snuggie commercial, just Google snuggie commercial and watch it and watch just how painful they make putting a blanket onto be. I mean, you with you. They found the biggest collected group retards on the planet to fumble around here. Put the blanket on entries the channel with the remote. It's possible. And then they show the snuggie now. What's snuggie? It's like it was sleep. No, no. It's it's a robe made out of blanket that you put on backwards. That's what it is. It's a backwards robe made out of blanket material. You do the same thing. Like I got for Christmas. Somebody gave me one of those wasn't expensive thing. It was like one of these cheap roads that you put on after you get out of the shower made out of towel. It's like it's literally like that. If you put it on back roads out of blanket. Yeah. It's the stupidest thing ever they only sold like ten million dollars where the snuggles go watch the commercial and just look at how painful they make using a blanket. Look that stirred up the pain. And it's that truth is. Yeah, it is. We're it's it is kind of a pain to put a blanket on to try really snuggle up tight. And then still have to move your hands and stuff again. It's it's it's a it's a moderate inconvenience. It's a first world pain. They created this into being the biggest problem in the whole wide world. So I'm watching the news last night. And I'm shocked just shocked.

"And tomorrow, I'm not saying cancelling your plants because I think if you've got a short distance to just take it slow in should be, okay. If you've got to travel to let's say Syracuse or only in or Cleveland, you know, a laundry trip. Just make sure you've got the stuff you need in your car in case you get stranded because overnight tonight temperatures are going to plummet. The snow will be heavy at times we're calling anywhere from between seven and fourteen inches of snow seven, no wrong grand island Cantu. Eleven buffalo. Twelve fourteen south pounds into Wyoming county within there's going to be an area from eastern Niagara county into Orleans county off Lake Ontario that will get lake effect tonight and tomorrow, and that's gonna boost their total to over foot, and that could affect the throughway so travel on the throughway tonight and smile is going to be white knuckle for sure so yesterday, I heard a lot of the term flash freeze is that is that are those concerns pretty much past now that we went from. Being right around freezing yesterday where it's thirty degrees things were wet and in the overnight when it went from thirty to fifteen twelve degrees overnight. That's where the worries of of quote flash freezing come in. Right. Yeah. That's when you have a huge drop it. Let roads just freeze. Well, everything's frozen. So we're not the flash freeze threat is gone and the crews did a good job preparing the roads before because right now as we know salt doesn't do much when it's this cold, and it's only gonna get colder. So hopefully, the crews got a good handle on that. I mean, I'm I'm the navigating the roads this morning. It's it's doing fine the snow's pretty light. But it's going to really ramp up the heat meaning tonight. I think tomorrow tomorrow's high will probably be in the single digits and a windows are going to be between twenty of between ten and twenty up to twenty five below zero tomorrow afternoon tomorrow night, and that's the kind of I don't mean to go just chill out. Stay at home. Or if you do need to travel, just be careful. Yeah. That's bone chilling cold. And you mentioned the you mentioned the lake effect possibility for the eastern Niagara county into Orleans. I'm wondering though, like, wouldn't you think that there might be an opportunity for some lake snow to pick up steam over buffalo as well considering how I mean the lake is frozen over yet. And we're at a read an interesting situation right here in the city of buffalo. Like, I'm from the south towns, I know what happened to the south downs. But the city sometimes sorta has like a little guard around it where it doesn't get the type of snow that the northbound or southbound skit. Yeah. Exactly he and this kind of situation this is purely lake effect off Cantero because the wind is north normally so buffalo can get into it. But it's not gonna be for buffalo like that classic snow band awfully Giri that extends for one hundred miles in pounds. The south towns, however, the closer you are to Lake Ontario. The snow could become heavy and widespread not just a single lake effect bands. But a spray of snow that could affect buffalo. But I think it's going to be more the Lockport new Fain Wilson. Alcott Brock ports be in the area. That that region. I think to get well over a foot and even over, you know, maybe a foot to happen spots, especially the closer you get to Rochester. Yeah. That's always the that ninety Dr usually gets gets pretty crispy once you get in between that Rochester Syracuse area. And I suspect that probably that will probably stick around that way. Pat. I wanted to talk a little bit about the AFC championship game. Not in New England where I think it's usually I don't know what I don't know nine out of the last ten championship games have been played in New England. Well, they gotta travel on the road. But they're not really getting any sort of relief as they travel to Kansas City where they were predicting earlier in the week some of the cold that were expected to see this weekend. They were expected to see down in Kansas City, but it isn't going to be as cold as they predicted. They're saying maybe more towards the twenties than the than the single digits, which I think will be good for people watching the game..

"About tomorrow morning. We'll be here. Right. I mentioned that earlier. And then we will be here. The next week. Then thing. Good morning, Anita. Were you? Thank you. Thanks for taking my call. I have a question about my corn plant the house plant corn. For years. Yes. And it's never bloom, but it bloomed, I didn't even know they bloom. It bloom this year. Recently, a very fragrant. I loved it. Yes. Fact. I cut off when it died the stock and the plant itself from the bottom up are just turning down on dying on it. But I have a new growth coming out of the ground at the base. So I don't know if I need to cut that home stock off or lease what to do with it. 'cause I've never heard an I looked up about it. And I never down anything about it blooming. Just they do bloom in the winter. Of the ones that more commonly bloom in the house, and yes, the fragrance is lovely. So that being said the other part of it one of the questions is is it taller than the window and actually needs more light, and you would cut it back. No, it's getting plenty of light that I cut out about three feet tall. But there's only it's not very attractive now because there's only a few leaves at the top last on there and another one get getting yellow as they've been dying. I've been getting them off the bloom what else has changed. Nothing. Nothing. No, it's in the same. And it's not like it would need to be repoted. Yeah. I reported it. If different grow very fast, you know, look here during the winter, Jeff I know what I would suggest for spring. But what do you think about the winter here? I wouldn't go feeding it or fully application of seaweed booed help. And I'd be careful about over watering it because even in the house, it's a slightly cooler temperature won't have the demands on it for needing as much water moderate resting period. Right. It's I don't think I would use the word dorm, and I would just say like less busy grower right now. Okay. Maybe I have been giving it a little too much water in the fact that about six months ago, I put some cuttings of philodendron around the bottom because the base of it is not attractive, you know, going up your stock. And so I printed those still Adele dandruff role after stocks. They're not going up. But yet they're just around it. And it looks better. But I check those every so often, you know with my finger to see if they need water. And so do you think the corn plantings getting too much water? How big a part is it. It's. We'll probably fourteen inches around. And that would be big enough to run philodendron by itself. And not received in it. There's a problem, right? There of the tremendous use of water. Besides anything else that you've mentioned several philodendron use a lot of water. And then there's. Christina fighting for more water with them. I don't think it's a good combination. And I would try to remove them gently as soon as you can. Devonshire mother pause. If you want to decorate the bottom down, there us, a nice mulch, or there may be something else that some people like I've seen people stick little ornamental things in there. But I don't think competition in fourteen inch plant by some philodendron is a very good idea. And that's where the water problem can occur. Okay. Now, the the thing is the base of the chance, you know, is in Brown goes up probably to feed, and then it has a growth coming out the siding. That's where the nice stuff is. I'm in the actual green stock of that that goes up another foot with the leaves on it. So I just don't know if I should just cut that whole thing down to where it's coming out. At the base became understood is the top part is just looking like heck is looking like it's about to die may be a download that. There's some new growth some sprouts coming out the sides of the remaining of the truck and not it's coming out from underneath where it's planted. Yes. It's quite pretty, and it's it's only about the leaves are just coming out now. And there's about four one of them is like eighty and about eight inches and the other's about four inches. Got the top off Jeff doing well seems to be dying back or maybe let it go a little bit longer till springs ticket outside and may up. If you can bear with it. I might wait till spring to see if it doesn't put on some more growth with the change in weather, a little more bright environment. And see if that doesn't happen. If you just don't like the looks of it. I think it would be okay to cut back, but I like to give it a chance, but about the philodendron they're only going to get bigger. They're gonna get you. So you might want to look at getting those separated into their own pot. Yes. Yeah. I think show how long have you had this plant in that pot? No, I've had the plant itself. About ten years at least. About three or four years ago. I potted it of just wondering about being route bound by now that would be something you could determine by pulling it out of there during all of this work. And then I think it was well, it wasn't when I checked it. If you want to grow shopping down there. Let's go to the postage Ivy one of those ivy's like that, and they will cover the base of the pot in the soil down there and cascade over and you can keep it from climbing up the trunk, and I think that that would be the the one that you maintain the size much more easily than a philodendron weight jokes bring on all of it. And then you can take it outside whether it's fresh air and better temperatures, and let's see what happens at that point. Okay. But didn't you say? Take him out. Now. Right. Yes. Okay. Okay. All right. Thank you. Yes, ma'am. Thank you very much. That's too much. Even though it's decorative. That's too much in there in a fourteen inch pot. Philodendron huge like you said and the two plants have slightly different water requirement. So we're we're making a kind of conflicting situation. Yeah. Sounds like die back the top though when they robbed from the base like that. That means the top board part is beginning to break down in some way. Let me see here. But the Ivy is I think the the jibe with its kidnaps another one in the Ivy would be nice low growing. There's a mouse ivy's very delicate small ones that would come over the edge of the pot. Not be competitive. I think that would be if I wanted to jump in green down there. I would do that. Let's see here this agenda. Good morning. Janet, welcome to kill BJ. Good morning, y'all. Okay. I have a question. I I recently moved into a new home, and it was the model home. So they have nice landscape. I have nice landscape out in the front, but they had painters growing and a few spots per color, and they got very tall like fifteen to twenty inches tall. So the men that take care of it. Cut him back to where the plant was still there. And I've recently noticed that they're starting to bed out again. Do they come back? Can they come back next spring? Do I need to do any the for the first really hard freeze is probably going to end them for you. Now, you could cover them like many other plans are covered with the row cover and try to bring them through again because there will be nice vigorous plants early in the season. Their root system is bound to be healthy. Yes. But I didn't know am. I wasting my time. Do I put any compost over the new ones to protect them are just we would normally consider a penta if you're not going to do the extra characters them from freezing. We would normally consider them an annual great. Yeah. Degrade butterfly plant. I would consider putting them back in there or planting somewhere else in the landscape because they do attract them. I'm not gonna worry about whatever happens to them happens. Okay. One quick question. I have really place follow. I wanna start kind of building it. I think we used to use something called. And yes. Yes. That's a good addition. That's what it's for. I'm gonna just put that out right now. Okay. Yeah. Okay. Thank you very much, ma'am. Thank you very much. That's the several times. Now that folks you brought up the heavy clay soils and managing villages challenge. Even though we have some recommendations there. It's still a challenge. And even though I mentioned about a tractor earlier compacting soil an individual with the soil is kind of moist. Then the vigil working around it with the garden for can brew. Well, trying to get that thing to dig a hole. There also are compacting the soil, and as a result of that the rooch won't leave the area. Just stunting the plan. I would go after I was finished and drive the garden for every four inches and radiate all all the way around that tree. And then add a little bit of organic matters from in and the roots have a reason to leave to leave that spot. Now, they can go off into that Richard Ganic matter and began to thrive. Five. So there. Let's see here. Do we have time? Jeff. Sure. Okay. David. Good morning. Welcome to kill BJ. Well, sure enjoy you guys. I live in Phoenix most health and Basquiat county. I have the world's largest water that I can't get equipment to and I need to cut it down. I don't know what huge. Is there any way in Austin that I could find somebody who climbs trees and customers asking too much? No, several of the arborists companies have good qualified folks who will do that kind of work. Okay. Another quick question. I have a palm tree growing underneath a mulberry back home in Phoenix. And I'd like to transplant a ear. You know, obviously take girl Bombay tree. But in those providing today that or should I wait until spring? I would wait until spring, and I would be very cautious about the palm. You have in Phoenix because we freeze here. So you know that survivor freeze. I think I think several I think my neighbors not even have the same across the street. It's doing pretty well. But if might be one of those gets really tall. That's that would be fine. The cold would be the concern. Okay. All righty. Hey, I'm sure enjoy you guys. I they're gotta talk on the morning. There about gardening. It's like did you try any palm? "The w total ten day rainfall forecasts my scaled stopped at fourteen inches yet. There's a forty seven inch total north west North Carolina forty seven inches of rain is among the possibilities. Navy rights. I'm hearing the storm surge associated with this storm will be historically significant that it will be critical to get the ships out of the Norfolk and Virginia. Hampton roads ports on the good side of the storm early. If we have anyone listening in my Wilmington station on my Roanoke station. My Virginia Beach station, my Charlotte station, just watch and get out right now. It's headed to Wilmington. I I don't think anyone needs to hang around to be in the middle of a hurricane Larry Arnn too. You know, I know a couple of people have thought they saved their house. But I thought what a thing to die for. Yeah, sicker. I just would not die for house. You can rebuild the house. Let's go back to judge Cavanaugh and talking at this point with Ted Cruz about religious liberty cut number twenty one. That was a group that was being forced to provide certain kind of health coverage over their religious objection to their employees and under the rule. Religious freedom restoration act. The question was I was this substantial burden on their religious exercise. And it seemed to me quite clearly it was it was a technical matter of filling out a form in that case. They said filling out the form would make them complicit in the provision of the abortion inducing drugs that they were as a religious matter objected to second question was did the government have a compelling interest. Nonetheless, in providing the coverage to the employee's in applying the governing supreme court precedent from hobby lobby said that the answer that was yes, the government did have a compelling interest following Justice Kennedy's opinion in hobby lobby said, the government did have a compelling interest in ensuring access, and then it came down to the least restrictive means prong of the religious freedom restoration act in that prong of the act to my mind is an opportunity to see. Is there is there a win win in some respects? In other words, the government interest in ensuring healthcare coverage can that be provided without doing it on the backs of the religious objector. So that's what the courts looking for in that case, professor bollocks written about that in that case. And it seemed to me that the government had avenues to. Ensure that the coverage was provided without doing so on the backs of the. Religious objectors, and I so ruled following the supreme court precedent in hobby lobby and in a subsequent case Wheaton college. Where they had an order followed and seemed to me to dictate the result that I. Identified in the priest priests for life. Now, the reason I bring this up Larry Arnn is because he cites abortion inducing drugs. So bereft of argument is the laughed that they have seized on that phrase abortion inducing drugs. And that is how the plaintiffs described abortifacents which are morning after pills. And there's a debate whether or not you want to call it abortion inducing. But that's what the plan is called it. That's their argument that he doesn't understand birth control. I mean, how does anyone even hope to slow down a nominee went? That's your argument. Yeah. And and what he said there, by the way was very delicate and showed a disposition that you want in a judge. So.

"Only one in Louisville able to get to a TV station, the only actual human coverage of the snowstorm early that that Tuesday morning and it was this incredible fourteen inches of snow that fell overnight incapacitated the city completely, and they had a law in Louisville that they'd passed because they hadn't had any snow in a while. So they they got rid of their city plows and said, well, we'll just hire private plows. But the rule was that they had to have a city council meeting in order to hire the private Prowse and approve it. Well, guess what? Nobody could get to the city council to have a meeting to hire the plow. So. So I thought this is incredible news, right? This is really big stuff. It's finally an hour, an hour and a half, two hours later people started making it in in the news department, and I said, I want as a news recreation. I'm not even officially news director yet not even fish working here yet, but I want the mayor of Louisville on our TV station, answering the questions of what is the city doing about this? This is just a huge, the screw up. You know, incredible. And I want the and they're looking at me like, yes, yes, get the mayor on. So we physically pushed the remote truck out of the lot. We were the only remote truck that actually got out on the road got down there. We're running the wires to the mayor's office, and I get this call from the assignment that the judge is on the phone. You need to speak to the to the judge. I said, Joe, what do I need to talk to a judge for? No, you gotta talk to him. Okay. Judge, what can I do for you? Well, I understand you're putting the camera down the mayor's office. I insist that you bring that camera two mile of I said, judge really wish I could help you, but the cameras, the mayor's office. If you've got something to add this fiasco that I suggest to go down there. Well, that judge is name was Mitch McConnell. Wow. And and as it turned out, he being Republican the, the mayor was a democrat, aim stands berry. They hated each other politically personally as well than McConnell had never been to stands, varies office, let alone to be on television, but he went down there. So I actually built a little bridge that that morning and not knowing at all what I was doing. My Louisville story starting starting of a long career of building bridges perhaps. But I, you know, you've had such an illustrious career. We're talking with Bryan Norcross about his fifty years of broadcasting. We're gonna talk about a lot of interesting topics today. Hurricanes, Andrew, superstorm sandy naming winter storms, though. Hang around because we got a lot to talk about today. But before we get to our sort of that sort of transition point, I wanted to kind of circle back to the weather report over the radio at sixteen years old for hurricane Camille. Because hurricane Camille, I think for many people, I remember my parents talking about hurricane Camille. And since then we've had Katrina 's and Sandy's Andrews, but tell us about your perspective, particularly a sixteen year old about hurricane Camille and give some of the younger listeners perspective on this storm as it compares to things we're seeing today. Well, in nineteen sixty nine. I was actually eighteen and was my second year on on the radio. She started at seventeen the year before, but this was my first big, you know, I done local weather forecasts, obviously, like every disc jockey did, but this was the first time that a hurricane significant hurricane threaten Florida during my time on the radio, which was in my hometown Melbourne and the summers. So the reason that I was reporting on it, a Melbourne, Florida cause remember, it was a Gulf hurricane was because on that Saturday, it hit Sunday night. On that Saturday, it was forecast to hit the panhandle, Florida. So it was a Florida hurricane at that point and hurricane warnings were issued for Florida pan, and there was nothing up for the Mississippi coast. So that's why I was talking about at all on the air in Melbourne. Wasn't because it was a a local threat just because it was a threat to the state..
