The Lady Bird Johnson recordings and what they tell us

"Thursday may fourteenth. Virginia in mid may is bombed for any troubles. No silent spring here. The green archer fresh bring leaves almost met over the rutted country. Would occasionally you would see a bright. Little chipmunk perched on radio fans it's been a bad week in washington lady. Bird finds herself in the rare uncomfortable position of being the subject of some pretty scathing press. So she's fled. Dc to get out of the spotlight and come to hunt. Land and estate in middleburg virginia about an hour outside of washington. Lbj and lady. Bird had made high profile tours of appalachia. I mainly on poor whites for one of the administration's first initiatives it's war on poverty and they've quoted massive press coverage tv radio and prince. Johnson continues the president's attack on poverty as she travels to the economically depressed areas of kentucky. The forty five counties making up this area present one of the nation's worst pictures poverty several times. Mrs johnson holzer motorcade degreed local school children who have gathered along. The roadside ladybird has been a public face for this up until now the media has loved her. There's actually no vice president at the moment because lbj was the bp under kennedy and according to the constitution there's no automatic replacement for him lbj's going to announce a running mate at the convention in august at the press corps. Traveling with the first lady has started referring to her as mrs. vice president. How serious is that. i don't know not fairy. But they've clearly picked up on something real about the way. She works with lyndon in a typical piece. Editorial in the lexington herald in kentucky asks. Why not an lbj and lbj ticket. Look no farther lyneham. Your big problem of running mate for this fall is now solved. It's none other than that. Charming texan. lady. Bird johnson ladybird lasted off but all this recognition has also made her a target. Read the papers and absorb the shock. Aptitude republican congressman's visit to my tenants that i pogo county. A couple of gop congressman decided to take their own poverty. Tour to alabama where ladybird has almost four thousand acres used for cotton and timber farming that she inherited from her mother's family. The congressmen go see lady bird tenants and put out some grainy black and white photos showing their ramshackle conditions tin roof shacks with collapsing foundations. No running water basically. She's being made to look like a slum lord and those optics as they say in politics are terrible. It could have been worse. I've got to thank some way to turn it into. A constructed in ladybird been in public life for decades. And she's savvy about the press. She understands the story could deal them real political damage so her first constructive step was to avoid the press by getting out of town. That's what's brought her to hunt land back in. Washington linden's really struggling. His civil rights. Bill is stuck. In congress is war counseled dean rusk mcgeorge bundy and robert mcnamara all holdovers from kennedy are pressing him on vietnam and he has a raging toothache and i was almost asleep. A little after tway out. He called me. It was a sad happy. Talk large about the alabama tenants and about his restive desire to seek a way out of the burdens. He carries but the real source of his pain. He's actually thinking about not running. November linden is fundamentally insecure. He knows he wasn't elected that he's just there because kennedy was assassinated. He doesn't believe he has a mandate and he doesn't think he can win despite an approval rating of seventy four percent. You could argue that. This is all in his head but part of him. A big part just wants out ladybird invited. Lbj's to longtime doctors to drive out to hunt one for dinner Linden had a major heart attack at heartland almost ten years ago in nineteen fifty five. It's never really out of mind for either of them so at dinner that night with the doctors. She'd heard what they thought about his fitness. And we're going to give him a thorough medical going. The next morning and night we only talked about the psychological aspects. I don't know though that either one really understands the depth of his pain winning af faces up to the possibility of sending many thousands. American boys vietnam both ladybird linden can see the writing on the wall. Vietnam could easily derail his presidency. Their ambitions for civil rights the sweeping great society programs. He's just laid out for his doctors leave to go back. Washington bird hands them. An envelope marked personal but its contents are political to on the phone the night before linden had asked her to set out the pros and cons. I wrote at for london about a nine page analysis of what i thought he situation was. I she types out that press release. It's a bit of psychology. This is what it would feel like to announce you're not running. Then on a spiral bound steno pad ladybird writes those nine pages laying out his options This letter or what. I think is more accurately. Her strategy memo is been sitting at the lbj library forever. Pretty much overlooked by historians.

Silverado Fire: Two Firefighters Seriously Hurt, 7,000+ Acres Burned, Zero Containment, Los Angeles

"Well of course, story today is been the wind and eventually what came with the wind event some fires. The biggest of which is over four thousand acres burned in. Orange. County. They call it these Silverado fire it's in eastern Orange County and the area affected the most or some neighborhoods. In Irvine. They have had difficulty because of the winds using air support to help contain this fire. Burning out near Yorba Linda. But the tough news we got a couple of hours ago with regards to the Orange County fire near Irvine is at a COUPLA, firefighters were severely burned covering this for Kfi news is Corbin Carson with the latest on what's going on in Orange County forbidden from the looks on television the wind is still blowing very strongly. Yeah it picks up an in. It drops off I'm still over here at the O C Global Medical Center where those firefighters were were were abroad. But yes, as you mentioned all throughout the day, we have seen these really strong winds is knocking stuff all over the streets kicking down a flagpoles and you know campaign signs you name it it's just it's mates from for some really tough conditions in and as we've just heard that the Fire that started in Santiago Canyon. This morning is now to seventy, two hundred acres, and then the fire that I'm about to be headed to. Now that over near your Yorba Linda has grown to over a thousand acres. We're hearing that there's a possibly one structure burned. So I'm going to check that out right now, and we just recently also heard all the new evacuations for the area we got that update from division chief Shane sure would. Mandatory evacuation orders here in the city of Irvine, their impacting approximately ninety thousand, eight hundred residents. So all residents north of Irvine Boulevard from Jamboree to Bake Parkway. As well as from Irvine, boulevard south to Bianca, road from Jeffrey Road East to patrol high high school all under mandatory evacuations. Also the communities in the city of lake forest, Baker ranch and Foothill ranch are also under mandatory evacuations. So as you just heard ninety thousand people more than ninety, nine, thousand people affected by these new orders. So a lot of people being asked to move those people around those areas that are not specifically affected they are being told stay ready in case. The wind shifts or they are told some at some point to move and that people can check with their local areas too as to where to get the latest updates and make sure that they're ready to go if needed. But earlier as you also mentioned, we had a couple of firefighters this afternoon that were out there they were they were on the hand crews and one was twenty, six years old one was thirty one years old the the the hankers part of their. Clearing the line and making sure they're trying to get some kind of containment on these fires as they're moving as fast as they can, and unfortunately we heard from OC fire authority Brian Fantasy that two of them were severely burned. This afternoon here is him making bringing this tough news to US earlier one of the hardest things? Any fire chief can do is is to report. Out on one. One of the firefighter family members have been injured or. Or worse. This is. A tough for me. Tougher all my firefighters. And certainly for the families of my two injured firefighters. One of them, a twenty, six year old and one of them at thirty one year old. One has sixty five percent burns both second and third degree. The second has fifty percent. Both second and third degree burns, and so what we're hearing is currently the families are here with them at the OC global, medical center that both have been intimated and aren't able to speak and they are in critical condition. But again, as you guys in, we were talking about a couple of hours ago just these winds that have been going through this area. I. Was Talking to a meteorologist about what to expect earlier on this and he told me that Sandiego. Canyon is his right in this wind corridor of OC. In that, you know this morning he had seen and we've already heard gust close to one hundred miles per hour in different areas. He says, these wins did a complete one eighty from onshore to offshore all part of this massive system bringing snow from Canada to Mexico this week. So we're really expecting these winds where everyone's keeping an eye out and being ready to go of necessary. The

The Mystery of Woodchester Mansion

"People have lived in the area of Gloucestershire share. Now known as would chester park since the Romans invaded Britannia but the site of the Winchester Mansion itself began as a hunting lodge in the middle of a heavily wooded deer park. The ducie family purchased the Land Law in Sixteen thirty one renovating it into a Georgian. House called Spring Park. The ducey's kept the house in a near constant state of renovation added several landscaping features to the sprawling four thousand Acre valley including a group of art official lakes in eighteen forty. The second earl of Ducie inherited the property from his recently deceased father. The Legend of what happened that fateful year would be the first indication that something wasn't quite right at the would chester estate. It's no wonder that rumors of full body apparitions, disembodied voices, and the strange smell of extinguish candles persist. Not when the initial occupancy of the mansion turned out to be so very, very strange. Henry was grateful that his father and past he would never say so loud but he could not be happier. He had long toiled in the shadows of Thomas Reynolds Morton look first earl of Ducie. While the reward of inherited title was a nice reward for his time. It wasn't enough Thomas expected a lot out of him henry heated the permanence near the Thomas War around his son the constant lack of approval had driven Henry to dark thoughts. It was unfair that someone who had so much could feel as though they were nothing. He'd contemplated killing his own father regularly. It wished for his father's death a thousand times. But wishes weren't enough. At night he trump of sneaking into his father's room and crushing his windpipe Thomas, Cole ties would stare back at him in defiance but Henry would only press harder. He would steal every ounce of paint from his father that he could. He would revel in at even. This was the retribution he deserved. But by the time, he finally summoned the courage to act on his feelings fate had intervened. His father was dead and Henry would be able to keep his soul free at sin. He should have been overjoyed, but there was a part of him. That was disappointed. Henry had wanted to watch the life leave is father's is. Instead, S. he stood in the church on that summer morning he saw the corpse of an older man that felt nothing like his father. This husk of a person wasn't even the slightest bit intimidating. He was justice Shell Serene still. No fire behind the size no disapproving sneer. To the best of his knowledge Thomas Reynolds, Morton had never looked serene is life. Death was as the saying goes the great equalizer Henry didn't WanNA. Feel equal to his father he wanted to feel better that him. His shock at being robbed of the chance to end his father's life was eventually swallowed by his own greed. He held the title and the purse strings that once belonged to Thomas. The legacy had been passed onto him and he could do whatever he wanted with that power. His first act of filial disobedience was going to be a party. He would holden enchanted forest themed masquerade at his father's last real estate acquisition but converted Hunting Lodge in Winchester Park. It was still under construction, but the ballroom was mostly finished and the incomplete designed would really add to the atmosphere. Henry woke with a sense of clear purpose on the day of the party even though he held the title for weeks, this would be his entrance into high society as an earl. The people would give him the respect they never gave his father. A. Played softly as Henry mingled with his guests, he welcomed as many people as he could bobbing out of conversations whenever he grew tired of the subject matter. Most of these guests were more his father's friends than his. He despised them, but he couldn't resist the chance to hold his new title and the imminent chaos heads. He outranked nearly all of them now. Though the event was a masquerade few visit guests had been particularly inventive. There was fun and trying to guess who everyone was. Something always gave them away the gate, the bone structure, the laugh. There were at least four uninspiring looking deer and far too many rakish second sons had decided to come as wolves. But there was one person Henry didn't know. A strange masked man was weaving his way through the crowd. He had never introduced himself and his body language was unfamiliar. Henry tried to get closer, but he struggled to even get a clear view of the masked man. The pushed through the of gentry ignoring their complaints. Finally. When the crowd parted they met. The mysterious man was standing still gazing out one of the large glazed windows to the forest behind. And redrew closer and put one gloved hand on the man's shelter. The did not turn around.

Residents near wildfire urged to be ready to "go at a moment's notice"

"Here in LA a fire has been burning near the beloved Getty museum for much of yesterday you can see this band of smoke stretching over the beaches of Santa Monica and out to sea there were evacuations shut down freeway but also a sense that this is a life here then again fast moving wildfires are unpredictable we saw one last year explode in northern California destroying much of the town of paradise and northern California is where firefighters are doing some of the hardest work right now battling the king Kate fire is engulfed more than seventy four thousand acres in cinema county north of San Francisco James gore the cinema county supervisor described what it's been like embers flying off we'll just jump into an area and all the sudden you will see in a window that in the middle of the vineyard in acre go up in three minutes and then an acre moved to twenty acres in twenty minutes yeah it is astounding to see the progression with the wind and the fact that the best they can do is really hold it off hold today and the fire has forced thousands to flee including residents of nearby Healdsburg and that city's mayor David Hey Klay joins us on the line this morning mayor thanks so much for taking a few minutes for us good morning I appreciate you having me on so how close is Healdsburg to this fire right now the you the fire actually is is very close to Healdsburg it as the crow flies home Watson a few miles and we we were very fortunate that when we give the evacuation notice on Saturday our community dropped everything and last and United I just heard about the room the reports of fires in southern California as well and with anyone of these situations when an evacuation is given and the community respond like they did in Healdsburg it really helps the first responders are able to have the room and the space to do what they need to do to get the staging area sat so that they're ready I I will I was in Healdsburg on early Sunday morning when the winds are picking up right around three AM when things are going south quick and I'd I'd throw up by our neighborhood and I could see the mass of a show of force that was there and I I can't say enough to to thank the various agency the regional agency that has come together the sole supporter community breathtaking what are firefighters telling you I mean is is do they have this under controllers are chance that that this fire could really explode again are or others could start that could that could threaten communities again even though they've done a really good job with the city of hill burgers in the city of Gilbert we haven't had any structures are homes or businesses burn and they've been battling the slayer out so hot spots the the briefings cal fire gives you know the they're attacking at every angle that they can but I think the last I heard was that let last night I think you the we are at fifteen percent contained which we still have a long way to go it sounds like a lot of firefighters a minute and coming from all over the state interest and then exhausted I mean a lot of fires out there right now yeah yeah there is a lot of we have a lot of resources hand the governor's been great and providing the resources make sure those get mobilized and does that that's the that's right very very appreciated you know a lot of Americans know cinema county obviously for wine country I mean I was looking at that the website for your city I mean just describing farm to table restaurant and wine country and beautiful countryside I mean I know the region relies a lot on tourism or are you worried this might keep people from visiting are you are you worried about the regional economy because of of this happening over and over again you know I think anytime something like this happens is elected leader you do you do worry but I I do want to get the message out there one and all one week ago tonight at eleven PM we got the call that we needed to open our evacuation center in Healdsburg and the within an hour or our city staff security services department they have that place up and running and we were able to welcome people are being evacuated from neighboring towns and what people need to understand about cinema county in Healdsburg is you know when you have a hospitality industry that goes through to everything we do our evacuation center was a place of comfort for people that were being displaced and dealing with a massive trauma and how I would delete we had translation services we had Latino community out reach we had mental health facilities we had it we accepted Pat's there's a lot we did it when you talk about farm to table dining are world class jobs down together and we're providing food it was little could describe it as food to backyard farm devaluation center I mean it with that mentality goes through everything we had one contact with all of our hotels and we were able to coordinate and place people one contact with our shop same thing well that's great to hear on something you communities really coming together and we'll all be all be thinking about a community hope people stay safe David Headley is the mayor of Healdsburg got his cities just a few miles away from with can Kate fire continues to burn this morning there thanks so much for your time thank you I appreciate your coming our stories and keeping us in your thoughts

"Be bold venture wisely good morning this is the California report im sold in solace in Los Angeles and I'm really tamale in San Francisco the state's largest utility PGA need today is set to find its plan for how it wants to get out from under bankruptcy protection where it's been since January the plan would involve using billions of dollars of money from investors to pay for wildfire survivors but the San Francisco Chronicle reports it's unclear how much money will ultimately go to victims of wildfires cost by P. Jeannie equipment and here in San Francisco the city is officially placed two point five billion dollars assigned to buy the P. Jeannie great that sits on city territory Michael Warren is the director of the climate and energy policy program at Stanford University joins me now by phone good morning to you good morning thanks for having me on you know as long as we've been talking about this idea of San Francisco buying P. genie out of its territory the question is always van can they really do this. and by that history suggests that this might take a very long time and be quite expensive quite a bit more expensive band the offered at that put on the table which is two and a half billion that's right and the challenge will be valuing the assets in San Francisco you know if they're still has its opinion but I'm sure P. Jeannie have an opinion as well and it's likely be quite a bit higher than the offer and and history especially the history from Sacramento where the same process played out suggests that this could take years in Sacramento state two decades to arrive at a number and to actually include the transfer of control from Friday you know for P. Jeannie to the municipal utility well the timing is interesting here is San Francisco betting that the bankruptcy judge will side with them shares are still would like to use the bankruptcy as an opportunity to make this move the city has been unhappy with peach you need for a long time in terms of various arrangements but it has with respect to its electricity system and has been interested in this concept for quite a while and and is hoping to use the bankruptcy the challenge of the bankruptcy process though is that James is not only gonna have to convince the judge that this is a good idea it's also going to have to give it the other creditors and their interests and we really need to see how the different stakeholders and the bankruptcy process response to this offer Michael whora is director of the climate and energy policy program at Stanford University thanks so much thanks so much lately driving up the largest wildfire status seen this season is burning in Plumas county in far northern California so far the Walker fire has scorched forty four thousand acres the U. Fetching Liquid Gold Prices, Maple Syrup Attracts Big Business to Vermont

"The business wars daily is brought to you by Staples work is changing, but Staples is changing right along with it. The new Staples delivers solutions to help your team be more connected productive, and inspired. Learn more at Staples dot com slash change. From wondering, I'm David Brown, and this is business worse daily. Happy Friday, everyone if you visit the website of remind maple syrup producer, the maple Gill, you'll read, what looks like a joke. So a chef a chemist and a Wall Street defector walk into a bar it begins. Well, in fact, the leaders of the maple guild, which launched in twenty thirteen are completely serious. Unlike the homegrown syrup producers that have populated the crap since the eighteen hundreds, the maple guild is run by someone from Wall Street, founder, Bob Sol as an executive with fiero. Comex Montreal private equity company that acquired the company two years ago from its base on twenty four thousand acres of Vermont woods, the guild has set it sights on becoming Vermont's biggest organic maple syrup producer. It has a good start. It owns more maple trees than any other. Single producer in the world in doing so it's challenging the powerful federation of Quebec maple syrup producers, that organization union more than thirteen thousand independent producers sells seventy percent of all the maple syrup purchased worldwide as a legal cartel regulated by the Canadian government. The federation sets syrup prices last year a barrel of syrup was worth twelve hundred dollars. That's eighteen times, the twenty eighteen value of crude oil as Vermont public radio said last year maple syrup is liquid gold. No surprise, then that challenger with roots in Wall Street would see an opportunity in the Vermont woods. A chance to break the whole federation has on our taste buds, and our wallets, the rivalry between the maple guild and the federation is such big business that it attracted the attention of none. Other than Bloomberg, which is typically more interested in Microsoft and Maserati than maple syrup. One reason why the maple guild can entertain such huge ambitions is the technology is come to the old fashioned industry maple. Gill sap, steamer can turn twenty two hundred gallons of sap into fifty five gallons of syrup in fewer than ninety seconds. Bloomberg reports in a traditional sugarhouse that same process can take hours even days because of new production techniques maple syrup output tripled between two thousand two and seventeen. Even as climate change was shortening the sugaring season, and making it far less predictable still the maple producers will keep pumping out as much syrup as they can feeding our insatiable desire for the stuff sales are growing fast as consumers look to replace white sugar with natural sweeteners as a result maple syrup is turning up in just about everything from yogurt. Energy drinks to coffee and beer as it taps into this growing market. But maple guild isn't just fighting the federation, it's also scrapping with two large decades-old, Vermont syrup producers butter not farms and Kuhn's family farms, like the Canadian maple cartel. You can bet that neither of them will go down without making things very sticky for the upstart maple guild. "That the problem is still there's really no nightcrawlers really kinda worms available. That's why they have the plan Opole wherever they go. That is that is correct. They fly for food and a great number of animals do that. The great number of birds. Well, you know, something like a bear. He's not going to migrate. He'll he'll hibernate in when he runs out of food. He just goes to sleep. Well, the schools do what you hear what I say wherever they just get it off the nuts and parliaments. Some kind of a tree or something is that what they do. That is correct mice. Squirrels all of the Yeslam typically under our hot tub. Yeah. Yeah. And they have we have a hot here on the deck that we use probably once a year, and that is an outstanding place for the for the squirrels and mice to get up underneath the hot tub. And that's where they spend the winter. Okay. They spend a few in the wires. Yeah. Mice liberal to the wires. Okay. Glad you called Richard have a great weekend pal. And there we go always for forty nine after the hour. Yes, ma'am. Okay. Let me say it was. Someone wants to know I think he's saying have you ever fished Jackson lake and the rivers around it in butts county. Butts county is that just Jackson lake just south is that butts county is I think it is. Okay. Always close. Yeah. Yes. Fish Jackson, lake and interesting that you bring that up to me in years past and I hadn't been on Jackson, a long long time Jackson lake is an was and continues to be certainly an extremely fertile lake. It's only is not much bigger than a flooded cow track. It's only like four thousand acres, but it was backed up in the late seventy nineteen seventeen nineteen eighteen so it's a real real old lake. It was called the dam is called Lloyd shows down and it backed up a couple of rivers there. And it's been there for a long long time. Very fertile. Here's the best time, which might be surprised to you to fish Jackson, lake ready. When the water when the when the they bring the water level down a little bit like four to six feet. You can fish the points between water spree in the power lines there six or eight points. So both sides of the narrow part of the river there narrow part of the late fish with big crank baits on the sides of the points way out. So that your lure is six or eight feet deep, and I'm telling you you can get your strange stretched at at Jackson lake. It's an outstanding lay. That was the last lake I fell in during a tournament. That means that you've fallen in other. Yeah. I have all the end of the lakes that was the last. I don't know if I'd tell that or not what happened was I was fishing in a tournament. And I think what you call that that little that little water turtle with the painted back. His back is blue and yellow and green. I think it's called it starts with a b a Beaufort, turtle or. Gas whatever and one of them came to the surface right next to the boat. And I thought man, I gotta take a look at this little guy wasn't much bigger than a fifty cent piece. I never told you the story did I don't remember this one and. I I reached down in the water. I was you know in the bass boat, and I reached down to get him. Because he's not going to hurt share anything. I reached down to get him because I would make a good close look at him. And that was when a wave hit the boat. And the next thing they hit the water was my face. Was it wintertime? What straight over was it wintertime? No, no it was the summertime tournament. So I face the rest of the day. So fifty two after the hour fifty three after the hour. Now, I'm sorry. Branson, turtle? I can't remember it's a painted back hurtle, they're real pretty and he's saltwater gas. He's salt water that happened. Did I say salt water? You sure did I I've got my brain is fried. I don't know because there's a lot of knowledge up there, you think so that's what I've heard stump. Okay. How seriously it's alright with me. Not just you. But oh and everybody. Yeah. Had a full show. We've got a couple of more minutes to go..
