The Bill Simmons Podcast
Fresh update on "four straight" discussed on The Bill Simmons Podcast
"All right, there's a huge Eagles game this week. So we had to get Sheil Kapadia, who is on the ringer.com and has a podcast with Ben Solak on ringer NFL show and does ringer Philly special and is attuned to this Eagles team. This is one of the craziest schedule stretches I can remember in a regular season. We have that KC Monday night game. We immediately go to the Buffalo game, which then goes into overtime. And your defense gives up 500 plus yards and you're on the field for like almost a hundred plays. Now you got San Francisco this week and then looming is Dallas. I can't remember another run like this. Now Buffalo is not one of the best teams in the league, but they still have Josh where you're going against all these elite offenses and teams you might have to see again in January and February. And I don't know what kind of shape is your team in? Like this is a brutal spot. Yeah, it was when the schedule first came out, everyone I think Solak and I did a pot and we're like, oh my gosh, that stretches like a gauntlet. These are all Super Bowl contenders. And then going into it, everyone's asking me, you know, what do you think? Like three and three, four and two. And I think I said, yeah, three and three, four and two, you're probably in good shape to still be competing for the one seed. And like every week I'm like, all right, I think this is the week they probably lose. Like last week against Buffalo, I'm like, come on, that's a tough spot. You're coming off a win against the Chiefs. You've got the Niners next week. This is gonna be the letdown. I'm feeling great at halftime. I'm like, nailed this, you know, and then they come back and they win again. So it's just been such a hard team to figure out. It's been four straight games. They've been losing at halftime. They've been out gained by like 90 or a hundred yards in every one of these games. And guess what? They're the only one team lost in the NFL. So it has been a strange season, perfect for Eagles fans, Bill, because they could still like rip the team amongst themselves as much as they want, but then anyone else does and they're like, what are you talking about? Yeah, we got one loss. So it's really the ideal Eagles season for Eagles fans. Yeah, you have your 10 and one, you only have two wins and double figures, right? The Niners have seven wins by 13 plus points. I did, I wrote down all the stats next to each other. And cause I couldn't believe that the Eagles weren't favored in this game. When Sal and I had to guess the Lions on Sunday, I think I guessed Eagles by two or Eagles by two and a half. And then it was the other way. It was San Francisco by one and a half. Now it's up to two and a half. I'm like, man, that is like, for a big game, I can't remember being that far off. And then you look at all the stats and it's brutal, man. Like San Francisco, they're third and first down, their offense, they're fifth on third down, they're sixth in the red zone, they're eighth passing. And then Philly's D, you know, 27th on first down, they're 30th on third down, they're 29th in the red zone. And the eye test, I've watched a lot of Philly, not as much as you, but I have all the Eagles and my fantasy teams. And that defense, you can just move the ball in them all game, right? And they just have this knack over and over again. They'll make one play on one end, one play on the other end, and all of a sudden they're stealing the game. But this Niners team looks like the worst possible team for this defense. Do you feel that way going into it? It's a very tough matchup. I mean, the Eagles' weakness already was the middle of the field. Their linebackers weren't good. And now their two starting linebackers are both injured. And so like the Niners' big thing is they play like no other offense, right? They play with, they'll play with two running backs. They'll all game where, hey, we're going to keep you in your base defense. You've got to have your linebackers out there. And it's like the Eagles don't even have linebackers to throw out there. And so it's going to be very tough for them to cover the middle of the field. But your point about like the way they play defense is pretty interesting. Just like zooming out in the NFL, because I feel like stats, defensive stats are always tough in 2023. So much of it is like, what quarterbacks have you faced? That's almost all that matters. And so I kind of liked the high variance approach. Like their defensive coordinator, Sean Desai, like he will not do one thing. It's almost like, you know, those Bengals teams always got praised where you weren't like the Bengals defenses are elite, but against like Mahomes or Allen in the playoffs, you're like, maybe they'll cook up something. Cause they try different things. That's sort of been the Eagles approach. So like they had that game against the Chiefs. That was pretty good. I mean, the Chiefs handed them a bunch of plays, but they held them in check. They played the Dolphins. That was pretty good. And so like you're going back and then they get carved up by Josh Allen. So there's kind of this back and forth. I think they're a high variance defense, but they'll try things which I like. They'll be aggressive. They'll call up an emotional blitz when they're like, nothing else is working. Just send everybody at Josh Allen and him and Gabe Davis aren't on the same page in that game last week. So that's kind of how I see their defense. It's a whiff slow. Like I feel like Kittle over the middle, McCaffrey delayed screens and little wheel routes. That's going to be a problem. Like I'm sure Shanahan, like one of the bets I was looking at, if you like the Eagles to win, Fandle has Philly to lose the first half. San Francisco wins the first half, but Philly wins the game. It's plus 800.

I am Matt Verderam alongside Gilberto Manzano as always here in the midweek edition of the show. We've got a lot to get to because last week might have given us the best slate of games we're gonna have all week long. We had four games that everybody thought were gonna be great and as it turned out, three of them were pretty good. One of which was a blowout. We'll get to all them here in a minute then of course we have our week 10 lines of five games that we're gonna focus on from our SI Sportsbook odds and then from there we also have the midseason awards that we have to get to as we are halfway home in the 2023 NFL season. Before we get to all that, let's welcome the other man of the tandem, Gil, what's going on man? How you been? Yeah, I'm doing well. Matt, as you know, I like to brag about my wins and complain about my losses and last week was a good week. I went 12 -2 with the picks but I am pretty disappointed that I betted against Joshua Dobbs. What a game, right? Unbelievable. I'm annoyed. You went 12 -2, I went 11 -3 and I feel like 11 -3 should have given me some bragging rights for the week and yet it did not happen. So I will say on the whole, our group, yourself, myself, Connor, Orr, Albert Breer, Mitch and John our editors and Claire, another editor of ours as well that does great work, I feel like everybody's picks have been really pretty good this year. There are some years you look at picks and go, oh my god, I'm barely above 500. Right now, I've got the sheep pulled up in front of me, so the best record is Albert who's 95 -41, went 11 -3 last week and then after that, Claire Kawana is right behind him with 92 wins and then in gold it says 87 wins and then it's myself, yourself, John and then Connor Orr at 75 and 65 pulling up the rear, so Connor's got to step up. Connor is bringing down the credibility of this entire group. That's not bad for last play, so 10 games over 500? His thing is, we all do our upset picks and he's done 50 upset picks. I think I've done like 16. So that's part of the reason, but yeah, the picks are good and of course people that want to can read those over at SI .com, we put them out every week. The editors are nice enough to put that together. All right, so last week, like I said, we had some great games. We had Chiefs Dolphins over in Germany and then we had Ravens, Seahawks, which we thought would be a great game, turned out to be a massacre, Late Window, Cowboys, Eagles, which was one of the wildest games I can remember seeing in quite some time and then of course we had Bills, Bengals at the end, the Sunday night game there and so like I said, we'll get to all those. Let's just start with how the day actually started. Over in Frankfort, Chiefs build up a 21 -0 lead on Miami. Miami comes back, makes it 21 -14. They had a couple drives at the end where they could have tied the game, even taken the lead if they went for two. They got into Kansas City territory both times, but both times ended up going backwards, lose the game. They dropped to 6 -3. Chiefs, of course, improved to 7 -2. Both teams go on their bye weeks. I'll So, let you set the stage here, Gilberto. What is it to you, is it more about the Dolphins that game or is it more about the Chiefs? It is more about the Dolphins because they can't beat a team with a winning record and don't tell me the Chargers are .500 and the Dolphins beat them. They barely got to .500, so I am concerned about the Dolphins, but I don't want to let the Chiefs off the hook, Matt, and I know you've been writing about this, but the Dolphins have been pretty average. It got to a point where now Mahomes is saying, yeah, we sting. We're pretty bad. Go talk about the defense. That defense is carrying us the entire season. You know what's kind of funny, Matt? This season, it feels like the team with the best defense might win the Super Bowl, and the Chiefs still have the best defense right now, it feels like, so it's kind of a weird irony, but you expect better from Mahomes and Kelsey, but the wide receivers, they can't create separation. And it wasn't for that awesome fumble, reverse play, whatever it was from Cook there. They would have probably lost a game there, but what's going on with the Dolphins offense? Averaging 17 points against the Bills, Eagles, and the Chiefs, so I go with the Dolphins there because I feel like the Chiefs could figure it out. It's halfway point in the season, they're just cruising by, and I think something will finally break out there, but I'll let you maybe talk about the Chiefs a little more. But the Dolphins, man, you're supposed to be the most explosive offense, highest scoring, and you can't even get a first down. It's like, do they have too many home run hitters? Too many touchdown makers? How about some chain movers? How about some first down people? How about some quick outs, and just get four or five yards, and everything just feels like a home run, and they don't adjust, and they don't kind of make end game adjustments because credit to the Chiefs, and Tyreek Hill said it too, they covered, there was great coverage on Tyreek Hill, so it's kind of one of those games where like, why not get a tight end that can help you out here? Why not get some guys that can make it easier? How about go to Raheem Oster a little more? He had like 12 carries, and he's averaging 7 .1 yards per carry, so I don't know what's going on with Mike McDaniel on two, and two was pretty bad in that second half there. Yeah, he had the touchdown to Cedric Wilson, but make some adjustments, Mike McDaniel, and stop going for the home run ball, Tua. Yeah, look, first of all, I agree, I think the Dolphins are the bigger storyline coming out of the game. Like, they've now played three really good teams, and they've lost all three of them, and they came back against Kansas City, but they were getting killed in that game too. They were 21 -0 midway through the third quarter, and frankly, if Chris Jones doesn't take one of the dumbest personal fouls you've ever seen, it's probably 21 -7, and we're having a different discussion. I think your point though, man, is good with the Dolphins in the sense of like, there's timing strung off. They're just dead in the water. They have no answer for it, and we've seen that now multiple times, this year and last year. Kansas City basically said, we're going to get up on the line of scrimmage, we're going to get our hands on Tyreek Hill, we're going to reroute them, we're going to cause problems. Look, who knows them better than the Chiefs, right? I mean, they know what can cause some issues, and they actually went back and watched practice tape of a couple years ago to try to figure out how to stop them. They went back and watched how they worked against him in team drills and practice, and tried to figure out some things, and it obviously worked. But from the Chiefs' angle of this, listen, the offense is a disaster, okay? They had 46 yards in the second half of the game in a turnover. But they're 7 -2 in the number one seed in the AFC because the defense is incredible, and they're just shutting people down left and right. If you go and look this year at teams that have played the Chiefs, nobody's thrown for 300 yards. Kirk Cousins came the closest. He was up in the higher 200s because he threw a million passes. But if you look at Gough's numbers, 253 yards, one touchdown, which was a good game. That was without Chris Jones that week. Trevor Lawrence, they didn't score a touchdown. He threw 41 times for 216 yards. Justin Fields threw for 99 yards. Zach Wilson, of all people, had one of the best days against him, 245 and two touchdowns. That game. wild And then you had Cousins, who went for 284 and two touchdowns on 47 attempts. Russell Wilson threw for 95 yards one game, and in the other game, the game that they won, he threw for 114. These teams, two I didn't throw for 200 yards. Nobody's throwing for yardage against them. They're second in the league in sacks, the first in pressure rate. They've got two elite corners in McDuffie and Sneet, and so, look, the question with Kansas City is obvious. Can this offense get going? Because if the offense gets going, they're probably the best team in the NFL. I mean, if they get even borderline top -10 production out of that offense, forget it. They have the week now to scout. I was texting with some people around the team, and I think there's a general thought of like, look, it's a bunch of little things that are throwing off the whole thing. Question is, how many of those little things can you fix in the next couple of months? The good news is you have Mahalem, you have Kelsey, you've got a good offensive line, you've got Andy Reid. The bad news is they have you and me at receiver. So, I mean, that's the question. My guess? They'll fix it to an extent. I don't think it's going to be a unit that you'll look at and go, oh my God, they're incredible. I think it's probably going to be a top -10 unit right around there at the end of the year. They're in the mix, but yeah, I agree, man. The Dolphins are definitely the thing that you'll look at right now, and the team you'll look at right now and go, all right, you're going to make the playoffs, but what are you going to do when you get there? Are you going to beat somebody good, or is there going to be a one -and -done? Matt, let me ask a quick question, because you watch this team closely, and I think I watch them good enough because they're always on prime time, but all these analytics people are saying, look at the EPA, look at the DVOA. They're top five in offense in all these categories, and I'm like, I get it. You keep showing me the numbers, but I keep watching the games, and the wide receivers are not that great. They're not scoring points. They had nine points against Denver, so I don't know what it is. Maybe when you said disaster, I'm like, okay, cool, because I was trying to play it safe. Maybe they're average because there's something here that I'm missing with the DVOA and the EPA. They're a disaster by their standards. By anyone else's standards, yeah, they're probably still an above -average offense, but by their standards, they're a train wreck. I will say this. People forget it because they won the Super Bowl last year. They were somewhat of a train wreck offensively the first half of last year, too. They had a bunch of games last year. They lost to the Colts last year. They muddled through a Chargers game that they ended up winning because of a pick -six that went 99 yards the other way. They struggled offensively against the Bills. They ended up beating the Raiders on a Monday night last year, but they were down 17 -0, and they needed to come back in that game. They were not good offensively for stretches of last season, and then they're them. In January, they cranked it up, and that was it. Even on one ankle, Mahomes did enough to win. But this has been the year before that. They were 3 -4 at the beginning of the year. They couldn't score a point in that season. That was the year Mahomes played, again, by his standards, not by anybody else's, but by his standards. He played poorly. You go to 2021, and they lost in the AFC title game. They were 3 -4, and then people say, oh, well, then they came out of it. They did in terms of that they won games. Their point totals after that 3 -4 start, they won 20 -17, 13 -7. Then they blew the Raiders out, scored 41, 19 -9, 22 -9. The last couple of years, they've had stretches like this, but by their standards, they're a disaster offensively right now. By the NFL's standards, they're probably somewhere between 10 -12th in the league offensively. So, got to take it for what it's worth. Yeah. All right. Let's get to the next game here. The Bengals and the Bills will go right to Sunday Night Football, speaking of a team that by their standards is an offensive disaster, despite what EPA will tell you. I'm not here to bag on the analytics, guys. I will tell you this. I'm a big eye test guy. You watch the Bills. My eye test, I don't care that they're fourth or whatever in EPA offensively. They have not been good over the last month and change. I don't think there's any way to say that otherwise. They go to Cincinnati. They made it a little bit closer at the end, but they were down 24 -10 with a few minutes left. They score a touchdown. They get the two, but they can't get the ball back. The Bengals now, 5 -3. Winners of four straight playing like we expected them to play at the beginning of the year. The Bills are 5 -4. It has been a struggle for them. They started the year 3 -1. Since then, they're 2 -3 going in the other direction. They have a very hard schedule. We'll get to that in a moment. What was your main takeaway from that Bengals -Bills game? Just the difference in quarterback play between Joe Burrow and Josh Allen and how to cover that game. I wrote about it. I kept seeing Joe Burrow moving around the pocket and extending plays. Then I look at the boxer, I'm like, wait, he has four rushing yards? I thought he ran for a bunch of yards. I know he had that one where he had the first down kind of signal. It's just when pressure comes, he knows how to move. It's smooth. It's not like he has to speed it up. He just says, okay, cool. You're right there, but I'm still going to do what I have to do and just extend plays. Matt, when it's Drew Sample and Tanner Hudson and Erskine Jr., Trenton Irwin, these guys are making plays. Then you look at Josh Allen, when the pressure comes, it looks difficult. It's chaotic. He has to kind of see what's out there and then, okay, force a throw or miss a throw. I get the Bengals defense is better than the Bills defense, so Burrow had maybe an easier time, but there was pressure. He was fighting pressure. I get it. The second there is not as good there, but it just seems harder for Josh Allen.

Visionary pressure, whether they've been able to pass that cost on to the consumers the way they did in the first and second quarter, that appears to be waning already. I think the question is how much is that going to weigh on margins? All right, we're getting to closing bells here in New York here on this Wednesday afternoon here, and it looks like a relatively good day. I think some investors will take it, a fourth straight day of gains for the Dow Jones Industrial Average, which is up about two tenths of a percent here on the day as we wait for these numbers to settle. A similar story for the S &P 500, up almost 20 points, or four tenths of a percent, and the NASDAQ Composite higher by almost 100 points, or seven tenths of a percent, four straight days of gains there for three of those major indices. Meanwhile, let's turn to the Russell 2000. That was your relative laggard on the day. Remember, the Russell 2000 had put together a five straight days of gains, there won't be a sixth down, a tenth of a percent here on the day. As you hear the clapping and the bells there, you see the CEO of Vivid Seats ringing the bell there at the NASDAQ, actually going to be speaking to him, guys, in just a minute here on the close. Looking at the daily advances, about 60 percent of the stocks in the S &P 500 higher are about 296, and then 206 decliners there are about 41 percent scarlet. Yeah, let's take a look at the best performing sectors and laggards as well. You've got real estate investment trusts and utilities, very interest rate sensitive groups taking the lead here, up by at least 1 .7 percent. Chipmakers also gaining by 1 .4 percent. On the flip side, take a look at the big decliners here. Healthcare equipment and services index, I'll just say that's the ozempic effect taking effect here in that sector. And energy stocks lower by 1 .3 percent as oil prices continue to fall. Household and personal products, another defensive group also losing 1 percent. Well, speaking of what's happening with some of those.

Before we get into that, however, if you are enjoying The Breakdown, please go subscribe to it, give it a rating, give it a review, or if you want to dive deeper into the conversation, come join us on the Breakers Discord. You can find a link in the show notes or go to bit .ly slash breakdown pod. All right, friends, welcome back to The Breakdown. No updates on FTX today. As I am recording this, Gary Wang, the CTO and co -founder of FTX is on the stand, and I will say only that if Adam Yedidiah's testimony yesterday didn't look good for Sam, Gary's testimony yesterday and today looks even worse. I will quote from Matthew Russell Lee at Inner City Press on Twitter, who is, by the way, the single best person to follow for play -by -play coverage of this. The attorney asks Gary, did you commit crimes at FTX? Gary responds, yes, with Nishad Singh, Carolyn Ellison, and Sam Bankman -Fried. Rough. But what we're actually talking about today is the fact that outside our little corner of the economic world, basically every indicator is going to hell. Summing it up, Arthur Hayes says it's about to be rectober. So let's start with bonds because that's what everyone's talking about. A massive sell -off is underway in the long end of the U .S. Treasury market. The yield on the 10 -year Treasury note touched 4 .8 % on Wednesday, while the 30 -year note breached 4 .9 % briefly. Both are marks that haven't been seen since early 2007. TLT, the ETF which tracks the price of a basket of long -term bonds with maturities over 20 years, has continued its multi -year drawdown. The most recent leg has seen over 15 % of value wiped out in long -term bond investments since July. TLT has now lost almost 50 % of its value since the top in July 2020. By way of comparison, the 2008 crash saw a 57 % collapse in the S &P 500 across two years, while the dot -com crash of 2001 featured a 50 % decline in the S &P. The losses accrued during the current bond market route are twice as large as those during the bond collapse of 1981, when the Paul Volcker Fed hiked the interest rate to almost 20%. Now note, TLT is not a small ETF. It's one of the top 30 ETFs in the world in terms of assets under management, about a tenth of the size of the SPY S &P 500 index ETF. Now interestingly, although TLT has been getting pummeled, traders continue to flock in. The ETF has seen $33 billion in inflows since the Fed began hiking rates in March 2022. More than half of inflows have come this year. Assets under management have more than doubled despite the aggressive drawdown in price per share. As ETF store president Nate Gerasi put it, TLT has been a quote, cash incinerator. So what's causing this huge flow of funds into a collapsing bond market? TLT represents just one part of a massive collection of interconnected markets exposed to price action in U .S. treasuries. So it's impossible to know all of the positions being taken just by looking at one ETF. Part of the increased demand for treasuries comes from asset managers running fixed income portfolios. For example, pension funds, insurers, and bank balance sheets are some of the major investors who hold long -term treasuries. A paper loss on bond investments isn't typically a big deal for pension funds and banks, as long as they can continue to hold those positions to maturity. But as we've seen repeatedly over the past few years, holding to maturity is not always possible. Now, although these structural buyers are part of the story, many believe they don't explain the large increase in volume for TLT. Eric Balcona, senior ETF analyst at Bloomberg, wrote in a Twitter post that TLT investments quote, have cost traders $6 billion, but they keep coming back because it has to work. This is arguably the new fighting the Fed trade. When asked if he thinks it's just portfolio rebalancing, Eric said, that could be part of it for sure, but based on the elevated volume, it would indicate its traders betting. Now, one of the known bets being done in size is the basis trade. Basis trades in general are when an investor takes one position in spot markets offside by an inverse position in a derivative market to capture the price spread. In this case, hedge funds and other professional investors are taking long positions by buying bonds outright and then shorting futures. Short interest in U .S. Treasury futures is currently at all -time highs, recently exceeding their late 2019 peak. Importantly, a basis trade in U .S. Treasuries was widely blamed for the repo spike in September 2019. This trade is generally seen as a cause of systemic risk due to the massive leverage involved and its location close to the heart of the global financial system. The Fed, the Bank of England, and the Bank for International Settlements have all recently published papers warning of the risks of this arbitrage trade and noting its resurgence. Goldman Sachs, on the other hand, is much less worried, publishing a note last week which stated, we do not think the trade poses a major risk to treasury markets in the near term. Leverage in the system is materially lower than it was in 2019 -2020 as a result of a series of initial margin increases and price declines. Still, the BIS paper from last month said the basis trade, quote, is a financial vulnerability worth monitoring because of the margin spirals it could potentially trigger. Now beyond the trade, some believe this price action is simply the bond market pricing in higher for longer. At last month's meeting, Fed officials stood firm in their higher for longer rate forecast. Markets seemingly for the first time this hiking cycle are actually listening. Nick Timmeros, the Wall Street Journal's resident Fed whisperer, tweeted on Thursday, is the Fed finally getting tighter financial conditions? He attached a quote from Dhalip Singh, a former New York Fed official and now chief economist at PGIM Fixed Income, which said, these types of things often take on a life of their own until they self -correct, either through weaker economic data or a more sinister mechanism such as a financial stability scare. Either of those two developments would mark an inflection point back towards lower yields, but we're not there yet. Timmeros also noted that this is the first hiking cycle out of the past five where the without seeing a collapse in longer term bond yields. He wrote in a Twitter post, this time has been different. Investors had priced in and are now pricing out a recession with a quick turn towards rate cuts. However, in an appearance on CNBC earlier this week, Jim Bianco had a slightly different take on reactions to last month's Fed meeting. He said, what you're seeing in the bond market is a capitulation. Basically, most of the year, bond managers have been long in trying to argue why we're going to have a recession, why there's going to be a rally, and they've been having their brains beat in. If the Fed is done and the market senses there is still some inflation left, they don't want to touch bonds. I don't think the Fed cares about volatility in the bond market yet. They're asking the question, is it slowing growth in the real economy? Others noted that rates have hit a point where they are likely to cause a major problem for U .S. government financing. The Congressional Budget Office recently updated its forecast to note that interest expenses are set to reach 20 % of tax receipts by 2032 if they remain on current trajectory. Economist Harold Momgren said, the rise in long rates is primarily being driven by the huge and growing U .S. budget deficit. Added Jeffrey Gunlock of DoubleLine Capital, Now, former BitMEX CEO Arthur Hayes has published a new essay and has a strong view on how this bond market dysfunction ends. He argues that, quote, Hayes' point is that the large imbalances always resolve in one way. Printing money, he writes, Now, this bond market route has had Arthur banging the table all week. He has been pointing to the current yield curve move, known as a bear steepener, as basically unprecedented. A bear steepener is when long -term interest rates rise faster than short -term rates, un -inverting the yield curve while keeping rates high across the board. Arthur explains, As the 2s and 30s curve steepens alongside the 2 -year and 30 -year rates rising, fixed -income trading desks start bleeding money and can't figure out why. Due to the leverage and nonlinear risks embedded in banks' portfolios, they will begin selling bonds or paying fixed -on interest rate swaps as rates rise. More selling begets more selling, which is no bueno for bond prices. The faster this bear steepener rises, the faster someone goes belly up, the faster everyone recognizes there is no way out other than money printing to save government bond markets, the faster we get back to the crypto bull market. So that is some of the story in bonds, obviously. Not only could we talk about more, every cable news economic show is exclusively talking about that. But let's go to some other indicators in the macro economy as well. On Wednesday, the ADP published their private payrolls report. The payroll processing firm said that job growth for September had come in way below expectations. It saw just 89 ,000 jobs added for the month. This was down from an upwardly revised 180 ,000 in August and well below estimates of 160 ,000. This was the slowest job growth in the ADP figures since May 2020. ADP also said that annual wage growth had cooled to 5 .9%, the 12th consecutive monthly decline. Job gains came almost exclusively from the service sector, which saw 81 ,000 net jobs added almost entirely from leisure and hospitality. Major net job losses came from professional services, transportation and manufacturing. Now a lot of people said that this should give the Fed leave to continue its pause trajectory. However, this morning we got the release of the non -farm payroll report and it told a very different story. TLDR, September payrolls increased 336 ,000. The estimate had been 170 ,000. So basically we beat it to the upside by double. That means that this indicator that Jerome Powell has been looking at for a year and a half, which is tightness in the labor market, is still incredibly tight, which frankly gives the Fed leave and even potentially a mandate to increase rates even more. As Adam Cochrane wrote, In terms of GDP numbers, last week the U .S. Commerce Department published its final revision of second -quarter GDP, holding steady at a 2 .1 % annualized growth rate. Below the headline, the data showed a large downwards revision to consumer spending growth from 1 .7 % to just 0 .8 % on an annualized basis. This is 80 % lower than the consumer spending growth figure for Q1. Given that consumer spending accounts for around 70 % of U .S. GDP, the revision could speak to a troubling trend as the U .S. consumer cuts back. Claire Lee, vice president of credit strategy and research at Moody's Investor Service, said, Now, as an unconventional economic indicator, outgoing Nestle CFO Francois Xavier Roger had some troubling comments about the state of the global food market. He said that the total amount of food and drinks sold globally has been steadily falling since the beginning of the year. Roger said, Some pointed to, as a culprit, the recent adoption of new weight loss drugs. During an interview on Wednesday, the CEO of Walmart said, Now, while junk food purchases are unambiguously decreasing, many suggested the explanation is far more obvious and troubling than the adoption of weight loss drugs. Jeff Snyder tweeted, They're struggling to afford food, credit card debt is skyrocketing, and much more. What happened to the booming economy of just a couple months ago? Contributing to this notion of the consumer economy running out of steam, in September consumer delinquencies rose across the board. Auto loans, credit cards, and other consumer loan delinquencies have been steadily rising since late 2021 and have now reached decade -long highs. Credit card delinquencies are now at a little below 4%. And while that's nowhere near the 7 % seen in 2009, we are also well past the last peak in 2020. Now, mortgage rates have also been spiking alongside the rapid increase in rates for long -term treasuries. The average for a 30 -year fixed -rate loan hit 7 .49 % this week, according to Freddie Mac. That's the fourth straight week of increases bringing the average rate to its highest level since December 2000. What's more, some markets flashed rates above 8 % late this week, indicating that there are no signs of mortgage rates slowing down. Sam Cotter, Freddie Mac's chief economist, said, Unsurprisingly, this is pulling back home buyer demand. Now that lack of home buyer demand has been met with a slowdown in new listings as homeowners stay put. New listings declined last week, with this year exhibiting one of the lowest rate of home listings in recorded history. 2020 saw huge numbers of households refinancing into long -term loans at or below a 3 % rate. For many households, that historically low mortgage rate has made selling a financial impossibility with new loan rates as high as they are. So friends, that is the look at the macro. It is dicey out there. There isn't a lot of consensus about exactly what's going on. There is only consensus that it's getting worse, not better. Obviously, all eyes will be on Jerome Powell and the Fed and any indications that they give around their thinking is headed after this non -farm payroll report. And I, of course, will keep you updated as the picture becomes clearer. For now, I hope you are headed into a wonderful weekend in one of the best months of the year. And so until next time, be safe and take care of each other. Peace.

"On those iPhone numbers. Just that one little thing because of Apple's size, Maddie, and because of the way the market's priced for perfection, that sends everything lower. Yeah, absolutely. And it's interesting, Scar, when we think about too this jobs data that we got this morning and what that tells us about the consumer as well. Yeah, well, the labor market is cooling. That's what the jobs report showed us, but it is in an orderly way. And if you certainly compare it to the pre -pandemic times, it's still fairly strong. What's interesting here is you would think on a day like today, Friday afternoon, after some of the biggest companies reported their earnings that volume would be below average. It's not, it's above the 10 -day average. Yeah, we can see that uptick on the volume on a day where you get the stocks moving to the downside here. Well, look out below here. Maybe some concerns going forward as we head into the next week. The Dow Jones Industrial averaged down about 150 points roughly on the day, right around that 35 ,000 level, down about 0 .4 % here on the day. The S &P 500 lower for a fourth straight day, lower on the week as well. On the day, it's a five -tenths of a percent decline. Similar story for the NASDAQ, down for a fourth day by about four -tenths of a percent here on this Friday. And let's take a quick look at the Russell 2000, also down for a fourth straight day, only by about two -tenths of a percent. But across the board, we're in the red on a weekly basis. Yeah, there's something for everyone when you look at some of the news and data that we got this week. You have the Atlanta Fed GDP now jumping at 3 .9 % this week for the third quarter. Then you have a productivity up to 3 .7%. That's the highest level since the third quarter of 2020. And then today, you've got Bank of America, and then today, JP Morgan, both taking recession calls off the table here. And then you've got the jobs report, a mixed bag, but still seeing some good news, both for the Fed and for a consumer scar. And it initially lifted the market, but as the afternoon wore on, we saw Apple drag everything lower. I'm taking a look at the group -ranked returns for the S &P 500. If you split it up into two...

Mitchell has big slam, 31 points as Cavs beat Nets 115-109
"Donovan Mitchell scored 31 points to lead the Cavaliers over the nets one 15 to one O 9. Mitchell hit 5 three porters and a fourth quarter highlight reel slam dunk in the cas 46 win, but says it could have been better. You know, we don't win by 6 or 8, whatever it is. It's a one point game. I think it's the entire offensive rebounds. They missed a few of the shots. It was much three tonight. They may make something. You know, and that's ultimately what's the separator. So they don't continue to be consistent with what we do. Care is the word added 18 points. While Darius Garland and Edmund mobley scored 17 apiece, they run sharp, led Brooklyn with 20 points and 11 rebounds off the bench as the nets dropped their four straight game. Jimmy, Jimmy. What? Hi, Jimmy. Stacey something. I'm listening. How about this? Tell people to join our Discord server, Jimmy. Yeah. It's a great conversation from there. This court is great. We've been talking about it for a couple of weeks now and we've got a pretty big following. I don't know where the number is at right now, but I know it's we're like it's over 600. No, it's way over. So it's called 800 now. That was last week. Was in on a thousand. We're closing in on a thousand. That was weeks ago, Bobby. I see, I see some familiar faces are mayor names in here that I see in the Discord, which is very cool. And you know, it's a fun place to just chat the others. I'm sure it was kind of popping off during the game tonight with Tim doing his thing. And you know it's gonna be a fun gonna be kind of a fun weekend on especially on Sunday with KG coming to town so I'm sure there's gonna be a lot of chatter and it's a good place to go to just shoot the shit with fellow Celtics fans and a lot of times we pop in there. We've done some audio sessions in there with fans and with Celtics fans and it's fun if you guys are screaming in the chat here but you actually wanna literally scream you can do that on Discord. I mean obviously there's a ton of people doing both right now. Yeah exactly. So you know who you are. That's what I will say on Discord. So yeah, CLS media dot com slash Discord. That is the easy link to get to it. It's invite only people. This is invited. If you don't do the club, the grant Williams club. Actually, we're talking about capping it. We're talking about there's an internal rumblings about capping the Discord. Kind of like Bitcoin. You know, if you don't get that Bitcoin, eventually there's a finite amount. So you want to get in on Bitcoin, you want to get in on Discord before we shut the doors. We don't know what that number is, but there's rumors that there's going to be a cap to it. It doesn't matter if you have a job or a computer or anything. Just join Discord. And I'm telling you, there's a lot of people in there. And again, it's pretty cool. I love just popping in and seeing just people going at it. You know, like, what's also amazing is it's really not contentious at all. It's a really good space for people to just have dialog. People are getting along even if they're disagreeing. It's not like nasty rhetoric here. So if you want to go and just kind of chat ball, it's an awesome, it's an awesome location, pop in there at any point in time. See who's in there just kind of in that way into the night. Bobby Bobby. Has to get the Discord, you know, you can just pop on there at any hour, any time. So yeah, CLN media dot com slash Discord, Celtics, all access channel, go in there into Celtics general chat. "But not available? I don't know. I can't give you the answer on that because I don't have anything to do with that. I've had some success with finding things on fanatics. They've been a pretty good source for me to find stuff. But yeah, if you've been having trouble with that, I'm not sure exactly why I don't have an answer for you. Sorry. LeBron is second in scoring right now. Do you think you can catch Kevin Durant as the scoring leader by the end of the season, despite AD coming back by late January or early February, if he does he does, I don't think it's something that he's particularly worried about. If it happens, it's going to happen within the flow of the game. You're LeBron was asked about this. I believe it was yesterday. He was asked if winning the MVP award means anything to him. He said, it means something in that him winning the MVP would mean that the Lakers have been winning a lot more games. That's what he cares about. And I think that's just a great way to sum it up in a great way to answer that question too about the scoring. If that's what the Lakers need to win games and that's the result, he scores more and takes the points lead, but the Lakers win games, that's the part that he cares about. Not so much the scoring title or MVP or whatever. Yeah, at this stage in LeBron's career, he's done all that. He's a scoring champ in the past. He's a four time MVP, LeBron wants to win another rank. I think that's what he really cares. He doesn't really care as much about the MVP and stuff. While cool, I don't think he cares about it. And frankly, he was going to be the MVP last season up until the point that he got hurt. All the polls showed him way in the lead for the MVP award. There had to be some frustration for that. If the Lakers go in a big win streak and they wind up pushing up to and I don't expect them to do this, but if they wind up getting up to say the four seat or whatever Memphis has been great. So catching them is.

"This was obviously it's easier to watch when it's a Lakers win when they get a lead, there were some nervous moments and stuff where the hawks came back, it was a three point game at halftime, but there was a lot of offense in this game. There were a lot of fun plays in this game. You had scoring explosions. You had dunks. You had fast breaks. This was an exciting game. And I agree. I think this was probably if we take entertainment factor plus getting the necessary win. I think this was the most fun game of the season. Yeah. And also, I think another big part of it is, they just look like they're having fun themselves. And moving the ball around, making a lot of extra pass is mellow had a good shot or bisha and he pitched it one more to the corner. I believe it was a monk or every Bradley or a shot, wide open corner three. So just moving to brawl around. I think you've mentioned his Frank vogels mentioned this, that they really want the team to buy into passive good shot for great shots, really move the ball around 37 assist on 50 shots. That's insane efficiency there. Yeah, they've said a number of times that the most talented player on the floor is the open band. And that's something that they want. And the 35 assists on 50 plus shots made. That fits right in with that. All right, let's see what we've got here. Okay, so I've got somebody that's asking the question and Sean, this is probably a good one for you. Ask the question, what is, by the way, guys? If you don't know Sean does the video breakdown as far as breaking down the X's and O's, question coming in says, what is the advantage of the Lakers playing small? So going with LeBron at the 5, we've seen them have more success. But why is this working out of the floor compared to what they were doing before? Were you going to restart offensively or defensively? Because I think it helps both sides. We saw tonight deepens, especially in that first quarter used to start the game. You get to be way more creative instead of having Deandre Jordan at center who just really can't move as much anymore. I mean, he just getting up there in age, but again, they would hedge wall screens with Trey young, they blitzed them a few times. They would run drop coverage with LeBron, who's really handsy, can get his hands into the lane. And then you surround them with, again, LeBron, great help side defender, Avery Bradley, really good defender all around, Stanley Johnson could guard the ball really well. And then that really allows you to hide a Malik monk who maybe to line up with Deandre Jordan would be exposed. And then Ross is A-okay defender. Somebody gets exposed. Sometimes he's just solid. He's an okay defender. And then offensively, obviously, you get to use LeBron more as a roller on screen, just a really used a lot. I've showed a lot on my breakdowns on Twitter or on Lakers nation YouTube channel. And yeah, she's offensively on both sides of the ball actually the Lakers are just way more spaced out and they could do a lot more different things, schematically..

"You're taking minutes from. I've got a comment here, said why are they playing rust during closing? So during crunch time, why is Russell playing? You know, we've been talking about that. Is that something that you want to get away from? Maybe ultimately, but right now, the Lakers are trying to win games with Russell Westbrook in there to close the game. Didn't have to tonight because he filed out. I think he can't help you. We saw some good place from him. We saw him in transition. We saw a beautiful fast break. It was everything we hoped a fast break would be from the Lakers this season. It was LeBron got the steel. Russ pushed the ball in transition, hit THT on the wing who was using that athleticism to run out there and then THT through a perfect lob to LeBron for the dunk. It was poetry in motion and Russell Westbrook was a big part of that. So you get some good plays out of him, but you also see some costly mistakes down the stretch. So for the time being, they're going to continue to battle through if the mistakes continue to mount during crunch time situations. Maybe at some point, Frank Vogel goes away from him, but we're not there right now. Also, my easy answer to that super chat is the rust LeBron pick and roll. It's worked since 80s gone out and I mean that's the major incentive to keep him in the close design. I mean, I guess you could say you could do it with monk and LeBron or AB in LeBron or THC in the it's worth, so. We actually saw an Avery Bradley LeBron pick and roll with Avery Bradley as the ball handler, which it may be the first time we've seen it this season. I could be wrong, but I don't recall seeing that one before. And it actually worked out. It worked out. It got the hawks defense scrambling. Part of it was because they put Trey young under the pick and roll and it eventually the ball got out to THT who attacked the closeout and then found LeBron for a nice nice little dish in the lane for a dunk. Worked out well. Never know. Some new wrinkles that you're going to see. James ainsley said THT seems to get a lot of threes made in his face. Do you think it's better offense or he needs to he needs to jump maybe? I think THT THT last year. He had a number of times when he jumped when he shouldn't have. And in fact, tray young did this to him. And people were getting him on the pup fake, getting him in the air, and then getting the bucket and one on him or getting three free throws on him. And so I think he's probably been instructed that look, your arms are so long. He's got that 7 one wingspan. You probably don't need to jump to contest. But we're at a point where guys are starting to hit those. So I think you're right, maybe he does need to start at least putting a little bit more pressure on the ball on those situations, even if it risks potentially the guy putting the ball on the floor and driving past. You can't give up open threes right now. So I agree, I think he does need to contest a little bit more, but it's also a very fine line. Yeah, and maybe that also could be he needs to close out earlier and quicker and then if you do get beat, you add the length and size and if that doesn't really matter, you should trust your help up behind you..

"But lately they've been so clear. There's no debate. The 360 award, it's LeBron. LeBron, 32 points, 9 assists, four steals, three blocks, 8 boards. The only thing you can be even a little bit, I don't know, quibble over is one of 6 from three. He was low energy up until the probably midway through the third quarter and then he turned it on. LeBron was in game load management. He was very much okay. Hey, Malik monks got it going. Avery Bradley's got it going, cool. I'm going to let them do the heavy lifting. And then when the time comes, I'm going to push down on the gas pedal. That's just LeBron doing LeBron things and being smart about himself and about his body. This was just another incredible performance from an incredible player. Yeah, this is easily LeBron. And I love that you said the endgame load management thing, 'cause that's exactly what we saw for the first three quarters. I think he just got 11 points around maybe the 6 minute mark in the third quarter. So yeah, but LeBron's easily to 360 award winner. Absolutely. He's definitely getting that one. And I really liked that you saw LeBron has a feel for a game. He has a feel for game and he tends to know what a game meets. So he was able to let the other guys go with the scoring and we need to talk about Avery Bradley too. He really had it going from behind the arc, but Malik monk was scoring. You had Carmelo Anthony. He was hitting some big threes. And LeBron just kind of coasting along, right? Which is fine. Look, 37 years old, that's fine. That's fine for him to do that. But then, when it came time for the hawks to make their push, I'm talking about midway through the third and then into the fourth. The hawks started to think, okay, now we're going to make a push here. We're going to really close this gap. That's when suddenly the bronze starts driving to the basket. That's when suddenly LeBron gets going and producing on the offensive end of the floor and bringing up the energy. And then we're seeing him get the steals. His hands were so fast in this game. Stealing the ball stripping and Clint capela, John Collins, he was phenomenal on that end of the floor as well. When he turned it on..

"So we've got a little bit of time here. But this isn't going to hurt his trade value. But here's the thing, even if you're on the side of, no, you got to keep THT. It doesn't matter either way, Taylor Horton Tucker playing at this level. This is what the Lakers envisioned when they signed him this off season. This is what they were hoping for when they made him the fourth highest paid player on the team was that you would get this kind of production out of him. So regardless of whether or not it's ultimately to use a Mediterranean, the big picture thing that really helps the Lakers here is that he's playing at this level. He's playing at this level right now. Hopefully it continues. Again, whether it's for a trade or not, if not, this is the kind of guy that can help you win games for the remainder of the season. Yeah. This is big time again. Having a play at this level. I mean, this is why you keep them like you said, I mean, Alex Caruso is likely not having 21 point games for you. And if not short THC can sustain that. But he can keep getting better and playing at a level simmer of this Lakers definitely made the right decision. Somebody in the chat says Trevor, where's your polo? I know. Normally I wear a laser station below. I was cold, so I kept I kept the sweatshirt on, but if it helps at all, it is a Lakers sweatshirt, so there you go. There you go. Let's talk a bit about Malik monk now. "Get the blowout win against the Atlanta Hawks. It was close for a bit, but in the end, the Lakers pull away what a night from Malik monk, incredible performance from him drops 29 points. LeBron James did his thing as well, another game over 30. Taylor Horton Tucker. Here we go. Two games in a row from THT looking solid and got some extra responsibilities tonight. We need to talk about that. And Avery Bradley too also got his contract picked up today and had a tremendous performance a lot to break down from tonight's game. So if you're coming in from YouTube from Facebook from Twitter, fire off your takes all your questions, all your comments. We will get to them tonight. Joining me and Sean Davis showed this was a fun one. The Lakers got the win and dominant fashion by the end and we saw a lot of offense in this game. Yeah, then go figure the hawks are a really bad offensive team, but I know I'll probably get this at some point. But the most impressive thing to me is 37 assists on 50 field goals made and only 8 turnovers. That's probably the most impressive stat for me tonight. Yeah, that is getting it done. Russell Westbrook had three turnovers, LeBron had four, everybody else was in single well, there was only one other turnover that was Stanley Johnson. 8 turnovers on the night that will get it done. They did lose the offense rebounding battle 12 to 8, but can't complain too much when the Lakers shot 50% from the field and 42% from three plus 90% from the free throw line. This was a great shooting performance. You mentioned the hawks, not a good team defensively. One of the worst offensive teams in the NBA, but still a challenge because they're also one of the best offensive teams in the league. And so that's why we see a point total that was so high. Hopefully, you bet the over along with our guy, Mark gunnell's, if you did, then you made some money tonight. So many different places for us to go with this one. We can talk Malik monk, LeBron, dropping 32, 9 assist, 8 boards, four steals, Russell Westbrook, Josh, I have a triple double, got it and assists and boards 13 assists 11 boards, but only 9 points, then fouls out Avery Bradley. Where do you feel like starting? THT is getting a bigger role. And second straight game having a really solid performance. I mean, I said this earlier in the year when he wasn't really playing well, he's such a good finisher around the basket. And I think the Lakers know that, well, I mean, obviously, and they use him really well around the basket and you text me. I think in the middle of the fourth quarter that they really used tell more, is that secondary ball handler in that second half? Yeah, it was really interesting. You know, this was something that we haven't seen a lot lately from the Lakers is Taylor horn Tucker as I don't want to call him a point guard, but as the initiator in that role in the offense, he's the guy bringing the ball up the floor..
