US Supreme Court: The possible nominees to fill vacancy

"Of you paid attention to who the possible nominees are. People are talking about Amy Kuney Barrett and Barbara Lago do you know but these judges and can you tell us anything about them? Sure I mean there. It's almost certain to be Amy Coney Barrett. Just because trump has generally deferred to actually others throughout his four years especially when it comes to the higher court, the Circuit Court of Appeals and the Supreme Court, and there's really a pretty big consensus around amy. Barrett, there some talk that like trump would be helped in Florida if he went the other way. But I'll be I'll be very shocked if it's not her now she is you know a a more or less. Predictable right wing jurist. I think her her confirmation. We'll have enormous effects just because I think it's clear. She's a reliable vote to overturn Roe v Wade where. Probably, in her absence, they would just continue cutting the meaning of that precedent down. You know because even as of today it's it's been made so hard to get an abortion in the south that weather would wanNA speak of. A meaningful federal right to abortion is already open to question in in many other areas. She'll just confirm that drift to the supreme, court in this liberal direction, which actually some of the Democrats on on the panel have have kind of colluded and in taking it toward in recent decades. So the addition of one person is rarely like catalytic or transformative. Maybe on this one issue of abortion, it would actually lead five of the justices without chief justice, Roberts to overturn Roe v Wade, which might not happen otherwise and I'm not suggesting that's not a big deal. It is, but probably in most other areas of law, it would just be like the same more of the same except more. So so so what are the different ways that you see this playing out Let's say this happened than Biden is elected He then gets to replace I assume the next soon to retire Justice Briar I believe, right? I mean. We. Assume that Clarence Thomas would try to outlast Joe Biden in the same way that Ruth Ginsburg tried to outlast Donald. Anything could happen right and you happen and of course, we should probably talk about interesting relationship between Biden and Clarence Thomas. How much of a? Let's go there. How much did Biden in neighb- ball Clarence Thomas is Supreme Court. Or empower him as a sitting Supreme Court justice while he was instrumental as as the chairman of the Judiciary Committee, I mean you know we can get personal. But in we've all seen, you know whatever the you know the Netflix's reenactment of this level. But you know the truth is that Biden you know maybe like all of us only more so again has been a prisoner of his time all the way along and at that moment The He he responded you know as part of the like con, the comedy of the Senate required. You know he hung out with these other white men and they decided that this wasn't a big enough deal and there was deference even in a democratically controlled Senate to the you know right of the president to nominate a supreme. Court justice when a seat is vacant we've totally given up those those norm sense really as a country, but you know within the Senate to. You know I definitely think he sh- his treatment of Anita Hill is part of the record that we ought to think seriously about it's mainly testament to changing norms in the country about gender and about sexual violence and so I but I. so but I would kind of broaden out to less about his own limitations which may be substantial and more about you know. Where we've come why really starting with Robert bork before through the Clarence Thomas Nomination, and through our time we've we've really converted national politics into like these psycho dramas around filling supreme court seats, and again, the reason is not having to do with any of these individuals Biden Thomas. it's more with what's at stake, which is policy making authority over all Americans and it it is. It's. It's hard to argue that this particular institution auto habit

Durable-Goods Orders Rise for Fourth Straight Month

"Refrigerators and cars were weak last month. Orders to U. S factories for big ticket manufactured goods increased a weak 0.4% in August following a much larger gain in July. The Commerce Department says the August advance marked the fourth straight increase, but it was far lower than the 11.7% surge in July. Economists had expected to slow down after big gains following the sharp declines in the spring due to the Corona virus shut down. Sounds, however, the slight August increase was below expectations. Prepare for the ‘iPhone 12 mini,’ suggest recent leaks

"Well, according to. Apple, accurate leaker and twitter naming artists love to dream. What a guy. He's a poet he's a philosopher he's also an apple leaker. He says that apple used the name iphone twelve mini for the smallest of four models coming this year. We know the other ones will be called the iphone, twelve, twelve pro and twelve pro Max. The first apple mini product was the ipod mini I remember that little that little guy that little diminutive gadget. Two, thousand four what a cute little device that was breaks in the year after Apple. Introduced the Mac mini which has been updated a few times and then the most recent mini line apple added was the IPAD mini in two thousand twelve a whole cute lineup of mini products. Adding an iphone mini would help unify. Lineup with the IPAD. The naming convention makes lot of sense to although it would add a degree of confusion since the mini would pack a screen that's larger than the iphone se. But the is known for having the smallest display. That's I mean at least in tech circles with normal people maybe not but people realize it's kind of like its own separate thing. So will likely show off the IPHONE wind up sometime next month. We talked about that. If they do love to dream is right. Here's how it's going to hear how here's how it's going to go down. The size will be five point, four inch. iphone twelve mini the six point one, inch, iphone twelve and six point one inch I phone twelve pro and the six point seven inch iphone twelve pro Max surfboard addition. And it will come with a free pair of Kirkland jeans. Or Fanny pack whichever you prefer that you'll have a way to carry your phone wherever you go.

RIP Business Suit?

"Tina Ob is a professor of management at Babson College and she says, a lot of students will come to her. You know before they're interviewed for the first internships or first jobs and they will ask like Bush should I wear this job. So she thinks about the question of like how professional and professional norms a lot when I asked most people what is the most big symbol of the business world and visit professionalism almost everyone says the business eventually and Tina started thinking about why in about where these norms come from also she herself had a special relationship with the business suit because before she was in academia Tina worked in banking and I absolutely were businesses because We think about the prototype of a banker is that you have a tailored suits white man play golf. I'm a black woman doesn't play golf. So I had to get the soup right and they was. I mean I had the best. They were beautiful suits and they were tailored. It was by putting on a crown almost I felt special I. Felt you don't have on my uniform. This is my beautifully tailored uniform and people perceive me differently. So now Tina works in academia and she loves researching things and so all of this got her thinking like wait why is the business suit? The thing that we all wear to work like what about kilts or row observe why not something else so she started tracing the business suit back through time all the way back to its origins in the sixteen hundreds it turns out we have Charles the second to thank for the suit he was the. King, of England four hundred years ago. Yes and at the time when he became king, the fashion in the royal courts was like very very over the top men were these huge poofy wigs and they had these big sleeves on their clothes and crazy colors because di was very expensive. So it was a sign you were wealthy men wore high heeled shoes but all of his over the top nece in the royal courts it was it was starting to cause some problems for Charles getting all this criticism from religious and economic leaders who were saying that the royal family there were morally Herat's overly decorated, and so he was looking for a way to try to. Present himself and As more restraints, the sewage back then were made from wool instead of silk, and even though the colors were still kind of like Easter and colors just all over the place. This was still super restrained at the time and it starts getting even more strain. So details on the codes when Charles the second I started wearing, them were quite long but they got shorter and shorter and shorter and eventually the. Colors that people in suits became more muted product. We see today or at least what we used to see I, mean I actually can't remember the last time I saw someone in a suit, and you know says, she can't remember the last time. She wore one I have on a workout Sir Yoga pants but you know what typically going to work I wouldn't have the song. Oh, it's the same for me talk. It's so nice, oh. Yeah. I can actually there's been a lot of talk on social media and in all of these articles think pieces about how much people have been loving dressing down Lali living that yoga pants life right and it's not like working from home is going away. I. Mean millions of offices are closed through the rest of the year and beyond and. Even for people who do go back to the office, the setups probably going to be pretty different probably fewer people some partitions, maybe less reason to suit up there. Also Tina says that now the people have tasted this yoga pants life going back is going to be hard. There's something to say about the sigh of relief the collective sigh of relief I think the world. That tells you that there was labor associated with getting dressed in a professional way. Tina says for now she is advising her students to still put in that Labor for job interviews in banking and consulting jobs, or at least take care of the top part that people are GonNa zoom suit jacket suit jacket. Exactly and you know the suit has survived four hundred years of change electricity, the combustion engine, the Internet two world wars the suit has survived. All of that is working from home really going to be the thing that takes it down death by Yoga. Pants, seriously towards yoga pants that killed the I'm on. I like the idea of the suit as King Kong. But you know I don't know Cardiff because the business has been around as you say for a very long time for four hundred years I mean. Things change and maybe this is the business suits swansong like maybe it's time for us to start wearing other kinds of close. WE'RE NOT GONNA be wearing suits forever right drew I put this all to Tina and she said, you know if you want to know the fate of the suit right now, you've got to talk to people who work in fashion right look at fashion person at twin watcher about what we're seeing from shoppers and what designers are

What it Means to be "AI Ready" - with Matthew Mattina

"This is Daniel Magellan. You're listening to the and podcast. We speak this week on the topic of. Readiness. What is it look like to truly be ready as an enterprise if you're a consultant, you're selling into enterprises and you want to build a success wave. This client stands in what might need to be worked on or if you are an AI champion within an enterprise, you want to get an understanding of where do we stand how ready are we should be an awfully helpful episode our guest. This Week is Matthew Martina who's the head of The machine learning research lab, A. R. M. A. R. Ramsey multibillion dollar semiconductor and software development company wholly owned by Softbank Softbank One of the biggest venture funds in the world based out in. Japan, and Matthew speaks to us about his criteria and his way of thinking through with Ai Readiness looks like in an enterprise again, if you WANNA a checklist to list of features away to assess take view on your own company or that of your clients. I think at this episode should be awfully helpful. If you're just getting started with deploying a, we have a free guide called beginning with Ai. It's special guy for non technical professional. So if you do not have a technical background, but you still want to understand what is it realistically look like to deploy artificial intelligence were the key factors to understand for a adoption. If you're not the person writing code, you're more focused on the business strategy side. Of things then you'll WANNA download that free pdf brief it's an e. m. e. R. J. dot com slash B e g, and then the number one. So bg like beginning and then the number one that's RJ DOT COM slash bg one that pdf should give you some extra details to layer on top of some of the insights that Matthew provides for us here today. So further ado this is Matthew mcconaughey with arm on the and business podcast So I'll kind of dive in first here on this topic of Ai Readiness and ask you about what you consider to be sort of the core components, the core aspects of Iranian s within the enterprise obviously a lot of moving parts here what comes to mind for you? Yeah. That's a good question I think. One of the core questions is one that I think people sometimes miss with respect to a I is. Now there's the problem that you're trying to solve. Of course, understanding that from the get go is key in pretty much any scientific or engineering discipline, but then with Ai. Knowing how your machine learning or a model actually going to be deployed. So what is that model gonNA run on in the field as it can run on a some kind of a big server in a cloud data center somewhere with no terabytes of memory and an of GPS and processors, or is that model ultimately going to be deployed on some kind of you know very constrained embedded device say you know in a in a o not censor or mobile phone or a car and everything in between? So think what we sometimes see is that a model will be developed by a data scientist or or. application will be developed without a good understanding deployment and where that gets prickly as you've developed this model, it uses you know. Fifty gigabytes of memory and then Lo and behold actually want to deploy it on a constrained device that has you know two hundred and fifty six kilobytes of memory, and now you need to do some surgery. Got It. So readiness here you're talking about you know not only involving the model, but involving sort of what are we going to run it on DC? This is potentially part of the four thought process for companies obviously, not everybody's GonNa have devices. Out in the field, people have security cameras, La- run things on mobile phones you know in in cars or maybe heavy industry the have it on a boat somewhere maybe other folks are just GonNa have stuff up in the cloud but for you, it sounds like maybe that thought process should happen as we're coming up with ideas not sort of after we've developed a great model idea that those have to be married to hardware sort of at the brainstorm phases kind of what you're getting at. That's exactly right as part of the upfront? Planning. Stage of enterprise preparing for a readiness. Yes. Some consideration for. What devices is this actually gonna run on and what are the key characteristics of those devices and and the interesting about it is that like I said, you can build models you know and build ai applications that you know recognize faces and use lots and lots of memory or they can have models at recognize faces and use very little memory. And making that trade off and understanding that that trade off will need to be made between accuracy and memory upfront will save people pain down

The Cost of Student Debt

"Michael, thank you so much for joining us today. Thank you for having me during a plague I appreciate it. We appreciate you and I gotta say it like when I saw the title of your book, I don't WanNa die poor. You know I thought to myself every point in my life I feel that. ADDS but but tell us why did you want to write this book right now? I didn't really put Tomlin per se but I think off the bed I'm really sick of away. College debt is talked about it's either like it's really really bad. People did like some ridiculous off their debt, which is really silly I, WanNa talk about debt in the way it's actually really impacting people black college graduates and Black College. Graduates of all five in general. Yeah. Getting into it like. Did your dream of going to college costs you can in numbers. And totals about like a little over six figures, the primary loan that paid for. Power for the most part sixty, thousand principle in about thirteen years i. Spend about ninety, five, thousand dollars on it already it's just the fact that for a lot of people don't have access to certain capital, we don't come from certain backgrounds. So they take advantage of us. I tried to put in the context of like I took the educational woman of a subprime mortgage loan. Conversation. Around student I think tend to focus typically on the number of how much how long? To pay back how much interest You accrued over time. But in the book you really get is like the emotional cost of procedure dreams or getting an education talk more about that part I wanted to talk about in terms of high really impacts every facet of life instead of just kind of even like how did it impact mostly in terms of your dating some cases? How does it magnified trauma that you kind of grew up with you know run into also recognized A question like there is an emotional way that we carry in addition to the physical dead. But I think if people really kind of you don't have to have student loan debt to lead into, you know where we are. Now all of us kind of see like people being screwed over even better not their fault or at least you should not solely be blaming yourself for a situation that you did in earnest with the best intentions. In this year is kind of a I think compounds a lot of a lot of people are feeling obviously with the pandemic. Of subsequent like economic. Fallout. Economic Stadi- things is affecting black people with substantial student debt. Whenever, there's a crisis in the country. We feel the worst of it we have more debt just by virtue of again started from behind and trying to crawl away open. You know black grabs was even if you didn't necessarily have a substantial amount of debt realities, your college degree doesn't allow the same ability to generate wealth away a wife high school graduates still. So it's just kind of highlighted. What was already there to that end statistic is like you know it takes the average person twenty years. To pay back their student debt while a lot of people are. Building their lives. Starting entry level work trying to start families are having to take care of parents and loved ones. It's a lot to all at once. Are there any policies or initiatives that you think our leaders our government could putting in place to make this easier on people live with Horn and Bernie in particular really brought debt cancellations like a national conversation. We all go to cancel all student that in this country. and Said Joe Biden Credit, you know was not my first second third fourth pig but auntie slapped down and we is what it is. It is what it is. But I do get. that. Piggybacking off of some Elizabeth Warren's influence that he does have initiative about some level of debt forgiveness. It's not high as Bernie with Liz but there's the caveat if you are a black college graduates specifically and you make under one hundred, twenty, five, thousand dollars I believe that is like total debt cancellation because I think that's really one important way to kind of help a lot of people who are going to default this you. And that's also gonNA stop them from being able to buy houses and rent apartment. So let's fix the problem by giving people a great is you mentioned like a lot of people are really going to be struggling this year and it probably in subsequent years to come what advice would you give to recent grads who are coming out who are trying to figure out how to how to make it an approach paying back their debt? Or even just living with that day. If you have federal loans, you probably have repre- just enjoy it in hate the interest. Later if you have private loans unfortunately, the situation going to be a lot more. Less than giving because they don't work with you as you have to also learn to forgive yourself for a situation as the young you're control Louis don't worry about your credit right now because a lot of people are in, it'll bounce back and just please vote. Just get over vote for Joe Biden might use the money

"And so. Is In this moment, speaking of being a Christian for not simply a black four or to support general speaking, be an Christian for in this moment is so important, especially in a sensible making faith and religion be a life giving reality in this moment of in fractured. So faith from a standpoint of. You know it's hard to feel it's hard to believe. And it's hard to you. Know we we don't need. Serpentine could to be real. It is Oreo it is. It becomes a process of building with other broken people and that. That is resurrection. Small are yeah, where that which is dead comes to life in a begins a new, so if I had to put a tester my pastor Latham. Booth astronauts. That is so good. Oh! One of not being afraid of broken. You know whether it's within ourselves or within others it's when we come to its when we come to accept our own broken us that we are able to reach out an effect change with other broken people in this world. That's so encouraging to me. Sue so you'd like giving me so much to to act on moving. Ahead jazz and is so crazy because like you know I, think we should be having conversations regarding you know. What does it mean to be religious in the twenty first century? What is the main to be Christian? What does it mean for me to enter into my world as a Christian and I think you know as a four is like I'm not a person who has to create a Christian nation, but I'm a person who is a Christian seeking to live life together for more, loving and just democracy with other people. I E trying to be like Jesus? Building common life together and sold language of creativity. Does not become a philosophy, and it becomes a practice whereby we become healers in wounded and broken world. So in society in the Church and our community will always looking for creative solutions for building a revolutionary, a redemptive, a resourceful, any a renewed self and community, and that becomes a living faith that is like our Lord and Savior Jesus. We're GONNA. Pass the plates now, if If Miss Betty you'll get up on the Oregon. We'll just. As. I did. That is that is. I.

"State farm. Is there now once again. We're GONNA BRING BACK Jason Air to discuss episode four Jason. We left episode three with Robin going out of quote Unquote vacation to Vegas. I mean you started episode for with a very interesting music choice. I know how much you care about these music choices. So tell us about this election. A big pundits don't want to be a player in bars. I think of. What would you be listening to at that? Exact time when that happened in January of Nineteen Ninety eight. You're in a club in Vegas. You look over. And there's this big dude in the corner like look at that. Guy. Looks like Dennis Rodman while I know it's not Dennis Rodman because they're playing in Washington tonight. Rodman what would you be listening to that big pond? Don't WanNa be a player it'd be on. I mean there's obviously like the low hanging fruit of the PUN of like. Don't WanNa be a player more. And He's on vacation in Vegas but one of the things. I found most interesting about this occasion. Vegas wasn't the fact that it happened. It was how it ended with Michael Jordan knocking on a hotel room. Okay because suddenly tells me like man we gotta get we get Dennis Back. Who WANTS TO GO TO VEGAS? I'll do that. I'll take this one for the team. I'll go to Vegas. I'll take that trip so tell me a little bit behind the scenes how that happened. Well I think that's misconstrued because I've seen it written a couple of places that he got him a hotel you've got him out of his apartment. He lived across the street cargo. Yeah lived across the street from the United Center. He got his vacation. Part of IT HAPPENED IN IN VEGAS. Of course but he got back and still felt like he was going to do a staycationing for a little bit in Chicago. That's all right. I WANNA walk across. The street is literally across the street so he went with the the athletic trainer. They bangers door and Michael I think he said off camera grabbed him by his nose ring and took him out but that was all. That actually happened I. I wish that we were better at identifying people that Michael didn't get on a plane and go to Vegas and get him but he did. Grab him out of bed and supposedly. Dennis had like a flop house. Apartment has no furniture. It was just like a couch and a mattress in one room with the TV. So he had. What now is termed a bachelor pad? He had a T. V. Bed Or frigerator in a floor counters in in beverages. In all of the drugs that you wanted available to an individual in one of those people that were actually there for young fans out there. That don't know Carmen Electra. Was there she was a winning hurt? All right so when you were hearing about this story and I and I saw. Mj Try to tiptoe around it. Did he give you any sips of some of the things he saw when he went into the apartment to go grab the worm will he literally said? I'm not gonNa tell you what was in his bed and he may not have known because carbon was hiding behind a piece of furniture with no clothing on Wesley. Morris wrote a review in the Times last week and called her a trial balloon for the Kardashians at in. That is one of those people who said Because I don't think people younger people know that Carmen Electra. Like who she was in the nineties this was like she was the number one. Like I don't know what you would call it that. There was no equivalent for being famous while she was an actress using Baywatch and all that she was famous for being gorgeous and then she got a role she was kind of her and Pam Anderson and his whole slew of women who came along. Kinda played that rolling nineties culture so that was was as much in the style jazz. It was for her actually being a key player in that story until a lot of whole share also and also the to address the elephant in the room. If you were to look at a blank canvas at both of them you would think Oh. She wouldn't want nothing to do with him. And then all of a sudden they're a great couple hanging out having fun. She's super famous and successful. He's an athlete. Tatsuta piercings everywhere. Would you learn about that parent? Well that's documentary that so much a pickup. We left off. I will give you the transcripts for research told us so many stories about. He took her coat at a bar. They're they're both at this bar and he wanted to talk her took her coney wouldn't give it back until like she would agree to go to a diner was him and his boys. That night Maybe that wouldn't fly in today's climate. But I think it's GonNa work for regularly but their first date. She told me they're driving along in his truck and he gets on the highway going the wrong way and starts driving at traffic on the high so we all know what. Jalen would say if he was on a date with Dennis. And he's doing that but little things that we couldn't fit into this 'cause it's like some chapters deserve to be longer than fifty minutes but we had to get it down but she saw him. She saw the Dennis out public. She saw you know the shy vulnerable. Dennis when they're behind closed doors and everything in between but I'll never forget that story of her saying the gets on the exit ramp. She's like what are you doing? And that is called. Raise the excellent traffic on the freeway. And that's just the first day in what became a long relationship with tells you a lot about the draw of Dennis Rodman but this episode four was focused on Indesit Rodman but also told the backstory of John by the name of Phil Jackson who is not just instrumental to this particular bunch of championships but other ones as well especially with the Lakers and when you saw him we've all heard about the Zen Master and Montana and then all of this. What was IT LO-? Is that like that experience for you to go interview Phil Jackson in his home court. So we went Philip very insulated and you have to go through a number of people to get to fill and I never I still to this day. Don't have Phil's information or sellers email or anything and we were going through somebody else and we were told by this conduit that he was waiting for us in Montana on a Tuesday so we went out there. And it's tough to get to. It's a couple of flights. It's gorgeous out there But it's a couple of flights to get there. We get there on a Sunday and we shot cenex on Monday Just to establish nowhere fill is is from of which we ended up using that one. Flower shot that you see but we often entire day. Not a bad day at work was actually really fun but but we use that one shot so on Sunday and Monday. We were scouting out his house. Scotty Michael Dennis just the personalities and still managing to to manage all of these people into get what he got out of them. So he's tremendously impressive guy. One of the impact of Phil Jackson was obviously the Bulls were successful before Phil Jackson. God they're under Doug Collins and that there was a discussion the film which I thought he did a really good job of piecing together about the way that Phil Collins I mean Doug Collins coach the Bulls and it was hey give Michael during the ball is focused. Let's focus on offense around the greatest player I've ever seen. Let's do that. It's a good idea and then Phil Jackson instituted the triangle offense and sort of sharing the ball and utilizing the team in the open player of that nature which allowed them to get over a certain Hump. Well I think that's misconstrued because I've seen it written a couple of places that he he got him a hotel you've got him out of his apartment. He lived across the street cargo. Yeah lived across the street from the United Center. He got his vacation. Part of IT HAPPENED IN IN VEGAS. Of course but he got back and still felt like he was going to do a staycationing for a little bit in Chicago. That's I wanNA walk across. He had a T. V. Abed refrigerator in a floor counters in in beverages in all of the drugs that you wanted available to an individual in one of those people that were actually there for you young fans out there. That don't know Carmen Electra was there. She was a winning hurt. All right so when you were hearing about this story and I saw. That is one of those Al-Said Because I don't think people younger people know that Carmen Electra. She's super famous successful. We get there on a Sunday and we shot cenex on Monday Just to establish where Phil is is from of which we ended up using that one flower shot that you see but we often entire day not a bad day at work was actually really fun but but we use that one shot so on Sunday and Monday. More boss goes murder writing. One last thing you remember that night I went to Mommy's house and the next morning. Michelle got killed gas. Who did that me Haha Haha appeared? In all caps Ballard's DNA was tested and matched samples from the crime scene. They now had a fully voluntary confession and Crime Scene. Evidence supporting it when Detective Ford Confronted Ballard. He confessed in a mere twenty minutes. Also unlike the others lengthy interrogation his record confession included accurate descriptions of the knife and the crime scene without any prompting and included details. None of the others had mentioned plus a timeframe that matched up with to Mika. Taylor's testimony what made you go back and rape and kill her. Ford asked Ballard. I don't know he replied. I just napped. It's blank the only problem with that confession. According to Ford was at Ballard swore he acted alone at the end of his session. The detective s Ballard if he wished to add anything to his statement no Ballard replied just that them four people that opened their mouths stupid the state theorized that Ballard confessed because he was serving a life sentence already and feared being considered a snitch. Prosecutors argued that is a black man. Ballard feared people know he committed a crime with white men attorneys for the Norfolk Four. Said they were very obvious reasons. Ballard didn't identify them. He didn't know them and he had acted alone. Michelle trusted Ballard. So she let him in. He trailed her to the bedroom where he raped and murdered her. That explain why the apartment was largely undisturbed even so the state convinced three separate juries to accept a different version that the defendants encountered outside the apartment complex and he let them in one year after telling he was guilty and acted alone. Ballard was brought in for questioning there. He said four told him that if he wanted to avoid the death penalty he would have to sign off on a version of the story. He had never heard before one. That incriminated the Norfolk. For in exchange he would get two life sentences. That statement Ballard said was totally false. Ballard never testified against or on the behalf of any of the Norfolk for Dick. Became the state star witness against Tyson Wilson and followed his lawyer suggestion to stick with his life sentence. Plea in one thousand nine hundred nine Williams. The first man charged with the rape and murder pled guilty after being promised. A life sentence in exchange for a stipulation of facts in an interview with frontline in two thousand and ten Williams attorney. Danny Shipley said this about that decision. There are some problems with the way entry was gained into the apartment where one of the defendants said. They used a ballpen hammer or something and yet there was no damage to the floor but in Virginia problems with the physical evidence are trumped usually by confession. And if you look at the jury comments. Thais case they said we know there was problems with the physical evidence but the confession was all that really mattered. The confession washed everything away. Shipley have thirty five years of experience with the Virginia court system by then and said he knew jurors tended to be very unscripted. All police testimony getting them to disbelieve. A false confession seemed highly unlikely in the end. All four men were convicted of charges related to the rape and murder of Michelle Moore. Bosko over the next ten years. The all recanted their confessions and entered. Multiple appeals finally gaining support for clemency campaign and receiving conditional pardons from the governor of Virginia in two thousand nine the Norfolk four case for young sailors. With no criminal records confessing to the rape and murder of the young wife of a fellow. Sailor is now considered one of the most bizarre in Virginia's history a former Virginia attorney general. Richard Cullen called it the worst miscarriage of justice he experienced in his forty years as a lawyer. Human Errors Happen. He acknowledged and thankfully DNA. Evidence can help correct honest mistakes. This however was intentional despite numerous appeals and pardoned bids backed by former. Fbi agents and five trials. Norfolk officials did not turn over various influential. Police records until two thousand fifteen when a judge ordered them to do so by then. The convictions were widely known to be produced largely by Robert. Glenn Ford's hands and that all started early on when the shoe confession came about Maureen Evans. The detective who initially led Michelle's murder investigation says she saw reason to interview Ballard early on. No one told her about the other crime he had committed that day. She told the Richard Times dispatch as far as she knew he was just an acquaintance of Michelle. She also told police that she believed Williams passed his polygraph claiming his innocence only because he was a sociopath so she told him he failed. Island started offering him the theme that maybe the victim. We're developing a mutual affection. But something went wrong. She said according to State Police interview transcripts. I can see that he was interested in the idea. I suggested to him that maybe they were having sex and she tried to stop because she became a freighter husband finding out. She then suggested that when she tried to stop Williams grew angry and hit her with something. Like maybe a fist or shoe then Williams blurted. I don't know I might have sleep. Walked when she couldn't get a confession. Detective Ford volunteered to take over. After speaking with Williams Ford said he confessed to raping Michelle and hitting her head with a shoe in two thousand eleven. Ford was sentenced to twelve and a half years in prison for taking bribes from criminals and line to police in two thousand seventeen two decades after the rape and murder of Michelle Moore. Bosko new exculpatory evidence was found the Norfolk four. Receiving absolute pardons were exonerated. The following year they received a combined settlement of three point. Five million dollars from the state of Virginia and four point. Nine million from the city of Norfolk for the wrongful convictions. Miscarriages of justice couldn't have an easy for billy or Michelle's either earlier on at the trial. Billy took the stand and spoke about his relationship with. Michelle his sweet goofy young bride. Every step. I took we took together. He said we had so many plans. And you look around our apartment. We don't have a lot but we were proud of what we had because we both work to get it. Michelle's mother Carol told the jury how the death of her daughter had impacted the family. At first she tried to protect her younger sons from the truth telling them. Michelle had died in a car crash. My two boys. I can't even give my whole self to them. She testified it's not fair. Michelle was laid to rest in her hometown of Pittsburgh when Dolan's piece about the couple released. Her family was visiting her grave site every week. Touting balloons and flowers for Halloween. They brought a carved pumpkin before the murder. Michelle and Billy spoke about what might happen if one of them were to die early. Given that billy was a sailor for the navy they assumed that any tragedy would involve him losing his life at war regardless agreed that if one of them passed on the other had a right to happiness when billy spoke to Dole and then twenty two he was growing close to a woman named Amy Hussein. Him Patsy cline songs stood by him at hearings and spoke about wanting to someday have children. Billy was still carrying snapshots of Michelle on his wallet from the day. "And and so. I think that perspective most players that I've been around their career Iran's three years before they think it's going to end and so usually when it's time for it to be over your surprised by that's how it is for ninety. Nine percent sounded the guys and so a perspective of someone who's kind of been on both sides of it. I think is important make sense. Did you the report. The packers forty niners squirrel I in the NFC amazing considering considering both teams have losing records last year in the AFC. The Titans and chief will battle it out with these super bowl trip up for grabs. The final overreaction on this Monday the packers and the forty niners the forty. niners going to Miami Victor. This is an overreaction guys mainly Eh picking the go pack go into Rogers is shown me that he can get he can just get it done. He can flat out get it done on and the reason he can get it done as because devante. I think the way he gets the ball to him. I think the chemistry that they both have and listen. I can speak to a little chemistry between a quarterback and receiver. I've been there many. And when you when you're on the same page with your quarterback like they are you feel like you are untouchable. You go through these practices you understand exactly how you WANNA WANNA attack this team. And I think they're doing that as we speak. And I think when you have that level of confidence between your quarterback and you're wide receiver only good things come from that and the niners are going to have their hands full trying to guard Devante Atas because he's a spectacular town. If it does happen. Aaron Rodgers will go nine years between starts in the super bowl largest gap ever by starting quarterback. which would break the record previously held by John Elway when eight years between his superbowl starts to the super spotted? Say but that. That that overreaction or no okay okay the only thing I agree with field. It's not I'm no reaction and it would be the longest right like I think the issue is. I don't think the packers can block the the forty niners I just. I don't think they can the banged up at tackle. The last time they played them they couldn't block them. Aaron Rodgers as we scored eight points. They really struggled offensively and I think when we look at the niners now I think they're better now than they were last time. They played on the defensive side of the ball. So thirty seven. Nobody surely that offense one hundred like yeah it was. It was really bad. You have to think they're playing better as well. Though that that that Green Bay offense a little bit I in Aaron Rodgers can create offense and volunteer Adams great but if you just get dominated friends friends who we saw weekend it team that dominated the other team front. They won the game. Look look at the. Vikings Viking seemed to run the football a A. Rod as he's not going to be a sitting duck in that pocket. He's going to be moving around. He's not going to be an easy guy. Just come and sit back there seven yards in being attacked by Joey. Bosa thank you for that information new. NFL live from our Texans reporters. Sarah Barshop Bill. O'Brien hasn't met with owner Kalmyk near but when asked whether Texans will hire a GM he said the way. I see it right now. It stays the way it is here are sounds of the weekend.

"The Patriots camera to continue to deny any involvement percent zero involve the Patriots have not earned benefit of the doubt. illeg has the truth will be on there. Stephen Strasburg two hundred forty five more money than any pitcher Brad Garrett Cole Three Hundred Twenty Four Million Anthony Renzo two hundred forty five million black baseball players this year having army since the start of the two thousands. The Knicks have made the playoffs only five times talk. Lavar Jackson the single season rushing record for quarterback in NFL NFL history. Eight trust will Friday Friday the thirteenth edition of the Friday for on outside the lines on Ryan Smith. Nothing creepy here. Just a bunch of sitting around with a couple of cameras rolling remind you of anything are big. And they're videotape situation. Not only what you to call it a gate just yet because it's not we I don't really know what it is but back to. The matter is couple of Patriots people employees or whatever. You WANNA call them. We're seeing shooting the field of the Cincinnati Cincinnati browns Cleveland Cleveland Browns Cincinnati Bengals game and now the. NFL has that videotape and the discussion is what is on. That tape is something there to show that they intentionally tried to get information about their future opponents bengals or was this just an inadvertent mistake. What do you think well? It's been dubbed spy gate. Two Point Zero. I think that diminishes the real spy gate. The real spy gate was an operation that happened for years at the Patriots. Used I think to gain advantages over a lot of teams. Seth were Shannon. I reported that forty games. Actually were involved in the spy gate operation. This is one instance and you you know it was diabolically smart. This is aggressively stupid. On the part of somebody with the Craft Organization the thing that so suspicious about guys is the fact that at the craft productions person is sitting there in a bruins sweatshirt and he is high as a camera in the press box on a tripod. Pointed at the bengals sideline knowing the history or you would think knowing the history so it's a lot of stupidity on the part of the Patriots Organization to not say to this particular person. Look you can't go there or it's going to be a very very bad look for this Oregon by the way. They admitted that they did something wrong. They admitted that this happened. They said it was an accident. Essentially was their statement. It wasn't something intentional. Well I think there are compelling reasons here to believe the Patriots side of the story. I was around around for deflategate last gate. And Yeah Yeah exactly. I was stapled to the Patriots and I remember. Sort of the collective institutional is to to the trauma of that experience of national reporters. Coming in no offense Ryan national reporters coming in and asking. I'm Tom Brady. Can you look America in the eyes and say that you are not a cheater. I remember the Mona Lisa. Vito press conference on the Saturday before the Super Bowl. That Bill Belichick gave where he said he addressed the spy gate situation and said we're never even coming close to that ever again so I do think that there are compelling reasons to sort of think what the Patriots learned their lesson. They were disciplined. It's just too stupid to believe they would even get this clubs. That's exactly what they want to God. I mean honestly who knows. It does seem unlikely but it also if it's not a brazen act of cheating it's certainly a brazen act is you. You guys were saying of stupidity and carelessness considering the way that we now perceive this organization and its conformity or for its lack of conforming to the rules football mine sappers lead but I think you know what I embraced this Patriots Dynasty. Now be about seventeen eighteen years to kind of see the trees for the forest and kind of just say you know what they're just better at whatever they do anybody else winning games winning championships cheating if they have always getting away with it and you know what I just embracing it. You know what those patriots haters out there. We'll see at the super bowl. Can I just say this. You had an article with suffer Shan back in two thousand fifteen and you talked about out the spy gate situation and what Patriots were telling employees to say if they were caught videotaping and one of those things was one of those things worse to say we work for craft craft productions. And we're working on a TV show which is exactly what this particular patriots employees said. Last Sunday he also said by the way to the bengals. Hey if you delete leapt tape. That'd be great too so there's a lot of suspicions. There that the alibi that was used in the real spy gate investigation is now being used in what the Patriots want to go away and the other thing. That vexes me wouldn't advance scout. The told that a camera crews going to be with him and make the point. Hey guys you cannot fill in the field you cannot film. You can't do that kind of stuff. You know doing my job. Wouldn't that happen. I know the football operations says it. We don't have anything to do with it but it just seems like organization. Exact can't be constant. Over oversight oversight job are known for like drilling down on details to something non the football related. He thinks it's something off the field. That's crash productions. I don't have to deal with this. Because it's not scouting its third job. They should have done their job if there is a spy gate. A two point zero. If this in fact was spying operation it is ingenious of the Patriots to create a Web series called dinner job that they create. Have you seen first thing I mean. It's always innovative. Shoddy this thing. It's an employee of the month. Thing I mean I want to hear Ernie Adams. Here's the mastermind of the spy gate a the whole operation. I want to see him on your job. They get caught again. The whole genius thing I think is going away all right when another super bowl this year. Though yeah yeah maybe next time they can do their job and see us. So they're saying all right. Let's talk about our other big story a big week in baseball. A big week for a couple of players pockets including Garrett Cole Stephen Strasburg. Anthony ran down getting paid. Jeremy this is what it's so. Oh interesting right because last year at this time we were wondering where is the money is collusion taking place. Why aren't the owner shelling out the bucks and and now it's quite the opposite three worst clydes in a few days striking billions or a billion something like that? It's also interesting right in. The larger context of baseball is the national pastime. Now he'll jio terrible ratings for the world series up until the very end all star game barely registers a blip in the national consciousness anymore. It's been a lot of talk about baseball becoming a regional local sport not National League anymore the way that the NBA or the NFL is well. I think you still might want to tell your kids. If they've got a choice. If you could choose among those sports east falls a pretty good pretty good bet and become an agent. We'll talk about that a little bit later but I wanna talk about another thing. That happened in baseball this week. which was the drug? Trump policy passed with a lot of innovations guys including a different way to look at punishment not punish people for drug offenses but instead put them in treatment you also also see testing for opioids and then marijuana. THC removed from the list of drugs of abuse. Yeah and I think this makes a lot of sense you know. We talk about the scandal of the Patriots. Maybe the lack thereof considering. It's only been a week and it seems to be fading quickly. Whereas this tyler skaggs scant a true scandal where he was provided opioids by a team? Someone who is there to look out after players and that seems to be something that just hasn't been talked about enough in the off-season I'm happy however that the League is adjusting the rules to maybe prevent such tragedies major league. Baseball really should be applauded here. Commissioner Rob Manfred this this this is a an innovation. Emphasizing treatment over punishment is something that they should be applauded for the players association is also should also be applauded this is really really a great innovation and and something that you'd hope other Major League sports will follow. How many times is baseball criticized for being behind the times for not being up on now? They're taking a forward movement movement ahead of the time that's right. We have to recognize those moments. Congratulations Extending Jeremy. I know you all the teams really really interesting development there all right. So let's give you the tweet of the week shall we. And this one came up last night from Tom. Terrific graphic me and Lamar forty on natural grass but he has to wear rollerblades who Bein the pay per view Q.. Lamar Jackson responding to that tweet. Last night he can win that race. All the blades on growths me see what I can do. Toes the automobile. I A senior companies being funny on twitter these days. I don't know if he's being funny. "And notice how how it sounds all those? Like more as you play them, how how they interact with your perception as you are in VR the ability to float around that world and look at everyone else's avatar as they're flying around in the menu for the effect modes like just being able to see the lights of everyone who's playing the game out there that like it's the message of the connectedness and all that other stuff. And then it feels like every aspect of game is in service of that from the music to look to the kind of the little story events journey mode the community event like like all of it is in service of of that thing that that's that's impressive. How like like for tetris game. It feels like a singular thought on top of that very it's very life, affirming. Yeah. Is frankly. Nice right now. And again, the very notion that you can take something tried and true as fucking just done to death as tetris and actually do it in a way that makes me want to call it. Cool tetris forever to actually think it is not just like a jokey thing that is genuinely the coolest version of tetris. I have ever played in any in any context. This looked sounded like that. We soft PS four Tetra. Talking about across that game today. And I was just like. Right. Yeah. But but I think the way you feel about tetris is. Not as an extreme tetris did not resonate with me as much you talk about your feelings with over din. Like, it was awesome. It was a fun experience. It was a toward a force visually and musically. But I did not come away with it reaching me emotionally and play much. Indie are just no actually. The are is where it happened for me because allowed me to surround myself with the game and just like like the outside world and be in it played it bit in VR. And I wish it clicked for me in that way. Because it didn't do much for me. It was just like I got this cumbersome thing on my head. This is kind of looked nicer on my four K anyway. VR was for me to and I think as a VR experience like it is maybe not the ideal way to play that game. If you're looking for scores if you're looking for precision, but just like as a kind of like sensory experience, it is the therapeutic too. It is just such an unusual application of tetris, and the fact that it works. So well is I think very loud -able that is the thing about it is is the the VR not not say that is like bad outside of the are..

"But as as many of us, I was recently learned that it's been discontinued. So I always love the stuff dry because just the smell of it is more more powerful than anything else. Like, a really good coffee where the taste relies on the smell right in front of you you pretty much get hit by that. I wave of just artificial syrup, and then the actual serial comes into really do the L U. But you know, we we don't have that anymore. And I'm gonna have to make do is sort of the. Pouring maple syrup on my own golden grams. But as we've all done, you know, like you said, yeah. But I guess if we're going for modern era, cereals, I'm gonna reach for those bread shaped toast crunch cereals that you were talking about. Excellent. Right. If you if you grab a handful of this first of all, wear gloves, surgical gloves will work, but maybe of glove if you really want to be sure because those things will get powder everywhere. But it's because of the powder that I like eating them dry because it really provides sort of a cushion or a pillow on your tongue when it hits you because it's so thick. So it kind of does the same thing that milk does in sort of softening the initial blow serious really easy into the delicious flavor. I'll tell you the if I had to pick one I would probably reach for an Dan, and I have extolled the cereals virtues in the past. But honestly, it's doughnut shop pink doughnut cereal. Maybe hamming folks, if you haven't tried this one Afars to call it kind of new classic. If feels like the kind of cereal it belongs right up there with your your apple jacks in year. And you're, you know, fruit loops dare I say it is an extremely good cereal to really is got that frosted animal cracker texture and flavor and flavor. It is perfect. We've been enjoy your emails of you have a question or something you'd like us to discuss. Are you just want to say, hey, appreciate you talk gravy? It's all serial, but we have a question from a listener I wanted to pose to Dan a movie myself intern. Dan adjusted says. I would like to bring dry cereal to the table. But a starting point for further discussion. Additionally, thank you for this show with soothes my exotic tremendously, your friend, Syria. Ana or Anna. Thank you so much for writing. We're glad we help. You are. Absolutely. I just don't understand eighty big baggage I called flakes. I are you up Haret. I don't understand this this Embalse to do this this terrible thing. I'm. I'm sorry. I shouldn't get detrimental. But it's extremely painful for me. I mean, it's understandable. I prefer cereal with. Okay. Of course. Yes, natural. Yes. Of course. Yes. But I also understand that mankind. Humankind rather has not yet perfected a foolproof method of transporting cereal and milk reliably are unless you wanna lug around a half gallon and look for the nearest fridge. Every time you're done or you want to really risk your luck with even the most secure Tupperware, which I felt it can splash all over your pocket. You kind of just got to accept that serial cravings on the go to be satisfied by dry cereal. It's not usually what I want to do. But I've kind of found the beauty in it when you really looking at a cozy situation, and you don't wanna move even the slightest I have found that is very good. If you have kids because you end up in a lot of smearing as where you have time for one handful of cereal, but not necessarily an entire bowl that you sit down to enjoy. And of course, if you one handful of something that doesn't have calories in it. So it south fill like a health conscious way of of taking in cereal. You know, I only have two plants and no one else in my apartment, but I still feel the exact same way. So pick your what's your what's your dry cereal, which which one do you think performs best in dry cereal sense? I I will explain why you formulate answer. I'll explain my car flake saying it's not just because they are not particularly sweet I have found in my experience it if I eat a lot of dry cornflakes, which I have done before the everybody gets desperate. There's this darkest slight. When you're making Cornflake wreaths around the holidays. Anyway, I've found that slight bitterness to like a big handful of dry cornflakes company by milk or sugar. I don't know why this is. But this has been my experience. I so cornflakes my go-to. What about you, Dan? What are you gonna reach for? You know, I was originally inclined to say waffle crisp..

Kids have done collaborations in the past like orios, for instance, right? What what could we expect from a sour cereal? 'cause I I don't know. I have been many it seems like an unexplored sort of palate in breakfast food. Yeah. There've been there've been a few raspberry cereals in the past. I don't think those really catch on very often. "There's always a lot of breaking news. This is world that is ebbing and flowing constantly with new serials rushing to the fray or old cereals receding back into that. Great blue crunchy ocean. But we have something in the middle this week. Dan sugar cookie toast crunch making its way back to shore. Yeah, it's been it's been a few years now since we saw sugar took sugar cookie toast crunch. It had a a story. Couple years on shelves where really developed a cult following. I mean, granted I love the stuff. But there are other bloggers practically had shrines to the stuff. They were. I don't know only steps away from printing milk cartons was sort of the lost signs on them. But of another box of cereal. Yeah. With Mel before we get to deepen this bring me in the world of this serial because the toast crunch lies. Interesting. In that. It is not just that the construction actually varies from cereal the cereal. I mean, your French toast, and your sedimentary crunches really don't have much to do with each other's. Whereas where does sugar cookie just kind of fall? Yes, you have sort of the plane square shapes and the tinier bread shapes that are coexisting in this one sort of toast crunch family. But frosted toast trench was a similar cereal that preceded sugar cookie toast crunch, which I believe is kind of a spiritual ancestor that is kind of important in linking. Cinnamon toast crunch to sugar cookie toast crunch because we've frosted frosted toast crunch. Tin was just stripped away. The cinnamon from the original and is doubled down on the powdered sugar really get this vaguely more vanilla than anything. Cinnamon toast crunch experience, which sugar cookie toast crunch than kind of dunked on by adding more of this amazing buttery. Most yield guitar of undertones that really just hammering the scooping cookie dough right out of the bowl kind of feeling around Christmas time. So is this always a seasonal cereal? Oh, yeah. Usually pops up just for a couple of months here at the end of the year. But as we said, it was gone for a couple years replaced by these sentiments star crunch, which many obviously thought it was good. Not hold a candle. So I would assume we could expect to see this star puppet up any day now as it made its way shelves, you know, many people have seen it already at WalMart's and targets I think hy-vee even one of the regional chains. But I actually just got my box today because I went to my local WalMart and surprise surprise. It wasn't out there. They were kind of just proud that. They had already got the pumpkin pie pop tarts. Which is like, okay, we're real proud of you. We'll put it on the refrigerator. But the rest of us are looking for Christmas cereals already. So I I had done my research. I looked on the WalMart website ahead of time. And so that it was in stock at the store, so I put two and two together and thought they just didn't have it out yet and much like what I did with the the dip in dot Syria that came out a few months back. I asked them if they can go look for me, and it's really a confrontation and a series of dramatic moment when you need to tell someone who's already, you know, not probably having the best work day that they need to go back and search through this dark scary warehouse for one bucks cereal for one dude..

The only thing that we ask for the next twenty or so minutes is that you relax. Kick back close your eyes. If that doesn't seem like too much if he can't if you're not tribe, and of course, and just think about serial for like, twenty minutes, treat yourself to a little break. You know, what if you wanna make yourself a bowl of cereal, but you're going to be craving one. By the time. We're done. And by make yourself a bull. You're welcome to try making the cereal at self. But in my experience, it's more stressful than soothing. The closest I ever got was being a little kid pouring milk on a bowl of teddy grams. I mean, that's kind of mix allergy. I did try to make my own golden grams once by doing some like really dry gram flour shavings. And it was just a burnt mess. I I don't recommend it. No, Mon of milk can can fix black and dens like that..

"The variety kit will set you back about seventy dollars while the robot kit costs a whopping eighty dollars now keep in mind these kits are largely cardboard so some people have criticised us saying nintendo is charging exorbitant amounts of money for what mounts to a cardboard kit other people are saying well you could argue that but this is also a valuable teaching tool for people who want to learn more about engineering robotics that kind of thing and it could lead to all sorts of really cool applications so there are people on both sides of the fence on this but that's about it for this update i could add that the nintendo switch has featured games made famous on other platforms such as elder scrolls five sky ram or the upcoming release of wolfenstein two for the switch these games have much more mature tone than what you would typically find on intendo but there have been other titles on other into no consoles that dealt with dark subject matter in the past so it's not like this brand new it's just a a very let's say visceral example of that trend and with e three coming up as the recording of this podcast i'm sure there will likely be other announcements that will necessitate an update to the series again you know and a couple of years then to know continues to be an important player in the video game industry and they continue to cater to a different kind of audience than the audiences that sony and microsoft are going after with the playstation and xbox platforms respectively that doesn't mean that a gamer can't enjoy one or more of those systems they might have all of them but what it does mean as nintendo does not want to play by the rules that microsoft and sony are setting where they're really focusing on the technical capabilities of their respective systems and how many pixels they can show whether they can go into four k or eight k resolution.

"You are going to see some differences particularly around titles that are what we call in hans for xbox one ex we've got a list now of over one hundred fifty of those games they're both new games an existing games and assessing screed origins is is one of those games what you will see on the xbox one eggs version is a combination of a number of things for example it's a game that runs in four k oltra hd that means sunsets in the world when you were an ancient egypt are going to look spectacular it means that the shadows that a cost by the characters are going to be sharper more detailed really important in a stealth game it's a game the support stobie out moss so you're going to a level of spatial sound awareness when a frock of birds flies overhead you really get a sense that they are flying above you and it's a combination of all of these ingredients that come together to make the title enhance for xbox one ex but if it was just shadows and skyboxes in sunsets that wouldn't point enough people fruit to pay the premium price would it has to be more than that that's be something fundamental is going on when i think what it it all comes down to the level of immersion and how you feel immersed in a game when you're playing it is actually quite hard to put your finger on its it's a subtle feeling that you just get from the believe ability from the authenticity of the world in which you are inhabiting and so when you combine things like better graphics foster frame rights spatial sound awareness foster loading times to keep you in the game more regularly.
