PS5: Sony gives first look at PlayStation 5

"Episode is going to be all about the playstation. Five and the PSI reveal event that Oh my God showed so much. I'm joined this week by Brian. Town Hey beyond beyond Lucy O'Brien. Beyond. Mexico Bill. Larry Station. Guys We. We have so much to talk about. It's a meeting like the pipe was finally unblocks. Yeah I like. The number of episodes were even like playstation. Games are coming soon. They're coming soon. We're GONNA get into Oliver Reactions the biggest game some of the. Gains in some of the stuff that we didn't see in this place type reveal event I. If you haven't watched it, we'll have some of the bureau going, but please go check out all of these really cold trailers. But I do want to start off of course with the consulate self We were all watching the show together. We were listening. and talking over dischord together, and throughout the whole show we all like. Are they leading up to the console, and they lead up to the council. They showed the design of the PS five. In fact, they should to designs. We have one with the disc drive in it, and then also an all digital edition much like xbox one Saturday. We didn't get prices for this or released, but we did. Get a designed so I want to know everyone. What did you think of this designed Lucy? Let's start with you since I. Know The design has been a big thing for you. Well I mean I as I said on livestream like I've always wanted Sony to go like stupid crazy with this, because like console designs have gotten increasingly conservative over the years, and I've just. I said all along like make this like home is car like just at a whole bunch of we to it? Make it strange like heaven. You know strange shape, and and all that and you know I gotta say they really delivered on this one I mean it is oh, it is a weird looking console. I mean the means already starting as we speak. The names the main factory is generating. It's I love it I have absolutely no idea how it's. GonNa, work, aesthetically might apartment. By afternoon photos of it horizontally I will say there are photos that show you can put it in your. You know which is which is good I, can't I can't think of the district is a little like a little hernia. Mainland China like it's like it's like it's pregnant, but that on the side, so it's like a little hernia on the side Damn. Had On. It would probably look like like the the disc version is off before we went into quarantine. And then there's the other version where we have A. You know we've gained the covert. We have. Got Exactly where my thoughts went to, but yeah Taylor Pooch. You know needs you can work off. You can lose weight in like a week or two. You just gotTa. Just clean eating, no beer for a couple of days. But why would you WANNA do that? The My? Now wants to chow down after snacks. I I'm totally I. This is probably one of the more surprising looking council reveals ever honestly in terms of the first impressions, just in terms of like being something that is so completely nontraditional while immediately screaming video game console at U. obviously a lot of people being incredibly productive, being like it looks like a router I'm old enough to know that this is the same stuff of intend to. We I think. Think, people like they they they get really bored when they just see a big black sideways boxer vertical box but they also don't want it to go to strange in another direction I'm actually all for it. The interesting thing to me is that people have started to lineup using the drive size and the USB size in the front. Exactly how much bigger taller it would be than the series accents obviously sinner. What it is about five to six inches taller with. Is is pretty is pretty sizable I honestly maybe could be four inches, but it's either way it's this. This is a significant size taller than the series x, and it got me looking at my entertainment center, and wondering. Where is GONNA work near to put it sideways. Put it vertical but you know we the second controller I think we kinda hoped that it would aesthetically match the bizarre weirdness of how kind of like weird future future they went with that and the white black color scheme, and they delivered, and I'm all for it. I we're you know we've got to see if there's any other colors that will see for but. I remember when the series came out. People were immediate like Oh. You can put stickers on it. You Skins on it and I. Don't know if I want to do that. This like at all like it feels like putting a bumper sticker on a Bentley. It really feels like just by looking at it that it went through so many different iterations that someone to said okay light lace just like just tear up history books and start afresh in like. Just go not so that like just a as crazy as you want. And then we'll kind of like lower it from there and I really love to see some of those other designs, because it does like we did this on the last show I think Otani use it like it does feel like it could have been a mock-up from a fan.

Going All In on Sleep Hygiene

"I love what you wrote here you do in our in our little prep document. He said okay. Gone all in on my sleep hygiene. Those words are music to my ears. Well you know I wrote this document before I went to bed last night and then last night was just in party with Mehan insomnia just a sexy dance between the two of us but it was okay. I figured it out I worked through it. I would say insomnia is probably not the maybe it is the right term but just I had a really hard time falling asleep. I could not do it last night. I did all my little things that I try but then finally I've mentioned this on a recent episode of here for you but I got mentioned again. A listener recommended something called good day. Chocolate sleep supplement candy coated pieces with one milligram of Melatonin per piece. Now got some in a grocery order. I should tell you Dorie yes I ordered it. I had done like a whole foods pickup order. Okay and I put this on my list thinking it'd be like a big bottle of vitamins. It is eight pieces of. Oh my gosh. It's so tiny. It's literally like the size of an a little cardboard box the size of an eraser that you get an elementary school. It's a very small. Wow or eight pieces of chocolate and I've already had two of them last night. So like you now loops and I just dropped. What on my desk so just FYI. I I don't know I need to do a little more research on if I can acquire more but they are basically giant chocolate eminem like candies that have Melatonin in them and at one thirty last night I took to them and that did help me transition into sleeping. Okay do you know. Do you know why you weren't able to fall asleep last night. Okay as I confessed to. You already pre recording. I was doing the thing where a looked at my phone late. Yeah and I regret it. I deeply regret it. So let me let me. May I fill listeners? In on kind of just what? I'm Lee the steps. I am taking s please. I would like nothing. So our we've talked about sleep hygiene a lot on forever thirty five and I have always found it to be a struggle and I've had sleep issues in the past and they go hand in hand with my anxiety so i. It's pretty clear to me that this is pandemic related. Yes omnia and stress like I know what it is and I do feel very fortunate that like while I do have to wake up and work and take care of my family. It's not like I have to wake up and be at an office eight o'clock so because when I used to get this kind of sleep. Insomniac used to be at work at eight and it would be this kind of like all night panic about it So so that is. That is very lucky for me. I feel like right now. That is that does help. But I'm trying to figure out ways in which to not Trigger this kind of bedtime sleeping Zayed's so the one thing I need to do that I think really helps get off my phone about an hour before I plan on falling asleep. Okay and that is hard for me because like when I go to wash my face a bring my phone okay. Do you do this studio the no? I put my phone away before I start my whole bedtime routine brain. It's like I want be looking at facebook while I'm washing my face. That's what I do. Here's what I do and like you. Can you're welcome to do or not do this? I don't care if I'm if I'm doing something in the living room like say watching TV. I will finish watching TV. I'll take one last look at my phone. And then I'll plug my phone in the kitchen and then like I'm done with the phone for the night. Ooh And I go into my bedroom. I change into my pajamas or maybe. I'm already in my pajamas. I do my whole you know. Wash my face put on my serums my lotions. I brush my teeth floss etc. Do Yoga Toes. I write in my journal I'll usually read kindle for a little bit Last night I was on my ipad looking for something but I will talk about in a little bit but I try and I try to stay off my ipad because then I get then. It's tempting to look at news websites and I don't want to be doing that and then I usually get so tired. I often fall asleep while reading. Yeah that's amazing like lights on kindle in hand and then I like jerk. Oh Okay and then. I'll put the kindle away turn up late and like really go to sleep. I feel like that's how you know that you hit Middle Age because I do that too and I feel like I would watch my parents do that and be like they are so weird though kick in their bedroom and they both leap with the lights on with books on their totally but like now we're there and it feels good and like you get why you just Kinda like close your eyes mid book. Yes I I've had that experience in my better sleep days and I and I I really admire that. You are so consistent with that that and not the just that it works but that like you. So much of it is forming the habit. And you've done that and you've done that as long as this podcast has been in existence even before you know well. Yeah I mean as discussed on this podcast. I have had to be consistent because of my sleep disorder and even though I still get night terrors. Having a consistent sleep routine does help. So did you talk to anyone. Like did someone guide you through figuring out asleep routine in terms of dealing with your sleep disorder or is this something. There's a lot of articles about it that I consulted. It's also partly why and Matt Matt and I are at odds about this. I like to have my bedroom be cave like I like it pitch dark preferably like blackout curtains. No late getting in quiet as to WHO and he likes to like. He likes to wake up with Natural Light. Which means that there's late seepage. All the time and I so yeah so so that's been that's often been a source of conflict but lake ultimately. I think the person with a sleep disorder wins out a man But yeah like some of the like I've talked about this before but like going to sleep at a consistent time every night is also very important. Yeah Yeah having that wind down period is important earplugs. I mask like do earplugs at night. I do okay okay. Do you have a certain brand of that? You like or is it just kind of like a generic drug store earplug. It's a generic drugstore earplug. I believe the one I have right now are from walgreens great shoutout to Walgreens shout to Walgreens I so I don't know I like a very loud white noise eight. Yes yes and I love the variety of white noise. Machines have cranking up all over my house. I have been finding Melatonin to be very useful and as well as reading and journaling at night. That does really kind of helped me wind down. It's the transition from phone to non phone that has been really hard and maybe I need to move my phone out of the bedroom completely. I've been leaving it on my desk. Which is in my bedroom and as you mentioned you like when we were talking about this previously I think work needs to be kept out of the bedroom but right now. My workspace is literally twenty four inches from my bed. That's very hard right now. I'm sitting at my desk and I can reach behind me and touch my bed. So that is. That is a little tricky. Like I will look at my computer and I'll think of something I haven't done for the podcast and I'll be like oh just do this one flip it. Oh men and do it. So so. That's that's hard for me to. I need to kind of start figuring that out but I will say I have been wearing an eye mask a lot more in not only is it helpful and filtering the light. There's something about the pressure of it. That is comforting. You do you experience that like the jazz header. Caress of an eye pillow against my face. I'm finding very soothing. That's very

Under Fire, Shake Shack Returns $10 Million in Small Business Funds

"Big news yesterday. Burger chains shake shack is returning. It's ten million dollars. Pp loan that people of course is short for the payment protection program. That's part of the Federal Government's cares act. It was touted as a bailout for small business. The low interest loans forgivable if at least three quarters of the money is used to keep workers on payroll but a number of large publicly traded companies including certain shake shack managed to get multimillion dollar loans before the program ran out of funds last Thursday that angered millions of owners of considerably smaller businesses. Who were locked out of the program? Here's what happened. The PPI was intended for businesses with fewer than five hundred employees. The Small Business Administration's definition of small business but it included a clause that allowed companies with multiple locations to apply as long as there were fewer than five hundred workers at each location shake. Shack is public company. Employing eight thousand people across close to two hundred stores in the US. It's valued at one point. Seven billion dollars according to Forbes but fewer than forty five people make burgers and fries at any single shake shack store that's far below the PP's single location cab. When the program was announced the company had already furloughed or laid off about one thousand workers so shake shack applied for the P and it turns out. They weren't the only multimillion dollar company to do so other applicants included. Ruth's Chris Steak House. Three hundred million dollar cruise line and four hundred million dollar data storage company and that's created a big problem for small businesses. According to Bloomberg two percent of the firms approved for loans got thirty percent of the total funds Solo preneurs and small businesses faced with the prospect of going out of business permanently. Were furious to learn that more than a dozen public companies with revenues greater than one hundred million dollars had received portions of the funds leaving little for them according to Bloomberg four inches. Ruth's Chris employs almost six thousand people. It's sales topped half a billion dollars. Last year. It received twenty million dollars in P. Money. Four hundred million dollar pot belly corporation chain of sandwich shops also employs six thousand people. It received million dollars in the low interest funds. Bloomberg's Ed but shake shack has since apologized for applying for the loan in an open letter. Sunday. Owner Danny Meyer and CEO Randy. Rudy said the. Pp's initial guidance was confusing. They wrote quoting here. The best chance of keeping our teams working off the unemployment line and hiring back are furloughed laid off employees would be to apply now in hoped things would be clarified in time close quote. They were losing more than a million dollars a week. At that time last week the company was able to sell equity on the public market and raise one hundred fifty million dollars as a result Meyer. Garate decided to return their peop- funds quoting again so that those restaurants who need it most can get it now. They said in a statement. They acknowledged their good fortune and having access to other funds and said until every restaurant that needs it has had the same opportunity to receive assistance. We're returning hours. Well responses ran the gamut from laudatory to highly critical some observers praised owner Danny Meyer is noble and pledged to be lifelong customers others were livid saying restaurant. Chains should never have applied in the first place. It'll take time to see whether public opinion will tilt toward shake shack or against it. However the company's actions received a hearty congratulations in one place by Monday. Evening it stock was up seven percent. In contrast. Ruth's Chris fell seven percent. Potbellies was also down by yesterday afternoon. No other major restaurant chains or public companies had stepped forward to follow shake shacks lead

Searching For Cockles

"We're in central puget sound in a body of water that we call Port Orchard Passage. This is a very good body of water for Shellfish. Because there's a lot of current coming through this little bottle neck area. There brings a lot of nutrients food. Oxygen Vivian. Barry is the shellfish program manager for the tribe and we met her and her colleague. Jeff more on a tribally owned beach across the sound from Seattle to areas famous for all sorts of seafood especially shellfish oysters and gooey ducks and course clams that we have different types of clams here. We have the the native little neck clams and we have an introduced Manila clam. That's very similar to the little neck. But it's from Asia originally and of course there's The star of today's show cockles which we actually couldn't see so they like to live in the lower intertidal zone and then the subtitle. Apparently there are more cockles. Living under the water than on the beach for those of you who are not up on their whole tidal geography. The Inter title is that part you see at the beach. The wet sand that gets exposed as the tide is going out. The subtitle is under shallow water almost all the time. It's that sliver of sand that only gives exposed at super low tides. Like when there's a full moon and so to get to the cockles in that subtitle's zone Vivian. And Jeff have to wait until the tide is at. It's very very lowest point this time of year. That's around three. A M which is go at night we harvest at night. Yeah we were out there during the day but fortunately there were some cockle shells available on the beach as visually. They see a cockle there. Jeff grab it. Yeah they're weathered but there you can see they look like those ripple chips. They're they're ribbed. They have these long ribs. Come down longitude only. This is what you would see when you're looking in the garden. Cockle shells right from the nursery room round more. Like a ball shape. The Long Ribs Jeff is describing on the shell. It's those same lines in the cockleshell flowers that give the flowers their name. If you've never seen a cockleshell and frankly I hadn't as Jeff said you might know them better from nursery RHYMES MARY. Mary quite contrary. How does your garden grow with silver bells and cockle shells and pretty maids all in a row? No one knows exactly what that means. There's a theory that Mary as Mary. Queen of Scots and the cockle shells are somehow Catholic. But yeah no one knows. And then there's another old English rhyme. I knew as a Kid. It was actually a jump rope song for me. Blue Bells cockle shells a vans British rhyme. So they would have been talking about the different species at cockle. The common cockle as it's called which you find in the UK and Ireland Portugal and all down the Atlantic coast. Morocco cockles have long been a popular food in all these countries. Just one of the many shellfish people enjoyed you might have heard the Irish Song Molly Malone where she selling cockles in the streets of Dublin. We streets gone in the UK. Coco's used to be a pretty common seaside treat. You'd often buy them boiled served in a paper cone and sprinkled with Malt Vinegar. They were popular in the east end of London. And especially in Wales but today those kinds of traditional shellfish like welk's and winkles and cockles. They've become less and less popular. But while cockles are no longer common snacks in seaside towns. They are still actually harvested all along the coast of the UK. They're shipped overnight to elsewhere in Europe like France and the Netherlands where cockles are still popular law of blazes in the UK. That harvesting is still done by hand using cocoa rake. It can be really dangerous work if you get caught by the tide but while we were researching this episode we discovered off the coast of Norfolk. They've developed an ingenious technique that involves driving boats around in circles. This is from a channel four documentary about calls three to four minutes. Yes that's the war talk. The boat's propeller push the sentiment in these re off. Would you use the boat? Wash all the sideway basically There's yet another species of cockle that's widespread in Asia. In Japan. There's a popular cockles Sushi. That's available only one month a year but in a lot of places. Kaka leading has really fallen off. The shelves are hard to open. And especially these European cockles. There's only a tiny bit of meat. Once you do manage to pry them apart but west coast cockles like we said there are different species and they are most decidedly not dainty little things. They're actually quite hefty. They probably can get about a good four inches four five inches. They can get fairly large and heavy in terms of like maybe a schoolboy size little apple so cockles are bigger than clams but there are unusual in another way to most shellfish like the little neck clams in the Manila clams covered the beach. We were on their pretty stationary and when they settle from larvae to an adult they basically dig themselves in and stay in the same place for the rest of their lives but cockles. They are not quite so sedentary. These cockles have a really heavy and strong foot and they're very mobile so they can escape. They're predators by just jumping away from them this jump. It's not just a little hub. This is a full-on leap leap leap away. So one of the Faster Sea Stars is the Sun Star Picnic. Odia helium authorities. These sunflower seeds. Stars are freaky looking. They range in color from bright orange to purple. They get to more than three feet wide. And they have up to twenty four arms covered in suckers and they love to use those suckers to pull apart the two halves of cockleshell and then they chomped down on the flash. They can sense when the sea star is trying to get a hold of him in a foot to just kick away and they can jump off. We're talking we're talking mostly sideways. And then the kind of kick away and SORTA roll along to get away so at a time but enough to get away from a sea star and as long as there have been people living along puget sound. They've been eating those leaping cockles over ten thousand years. I don't know I mean bivalves have been around for you. Know millions of years in the ocean and the tribes have been around these waters. For at least I think the archaeological record say at least fourteen thousand years by all accounts cockles are one hundred percent delicious and a favorite food of the first nations people in the area so they will build a large fire with rocks so the rocks become very hot and they will put the shellfish right the rocks and cover them with seaweed so they basically steam in their own juices. It's over an open flame and it's yeah the the way they've been doing it for forever so it's they've perfected the art they're good. They're really sweet. Really sweet and kind of a rich kind of seafood taste little chewier a little bit meaty so they compared to other clans. I would say there's more richness in the

You can read strength training and then once you step into the workout. We'll take you for warmup routine and then as we take you for every single strength. Training exercise tonal will automatically choose. How Much Weight? You should lift scored exercise. Assess how you're doing and then Decide whether it's time for you to lift more weight or less weight so so in essence. The is adopting every workout to you. In terms of the way the pacing to work. That's actually will speed up and slow down depending on on how you're doing. I even give you real time feedback right emotion elements of your arm. So it's it's pretty cool and Since we last talked. And that's I'm tonal had just launched a few months before that and what has happened since then what has changed. I think a lot of a lot of things have changed. I think when when we first started a lot of people would look at this thing and not sure what it was and now now we're in a position where where people look at this and they will have a tonal. Just tell us that. It's the most incredible piece of equipment if they've ever used and I think the the analogy I can use. It's like it's like one test Reduction of electric cars. I think when I was a kid when you looked electric cars they were always. They're always like the all environmentally friendly alternative to gasoline cars. But you're serious about cars. You had to go gasoline. And now Tesla has proven that an electric car cannot perform a gasoline card every single dimension. And that's exactly. What tonal is tonal? Doesn't rely on big metal place in gravity. We actually generate or she using electricity And electromagnetics and just repel cars or trains or in Donald Generate enough force. The pick you up off the ground or give you a really really serious workout and I think before we. We launched people who would see. The product would be impressed by now that it's people's homes and more and more people hearing. We're starting to get this this reputation of being a superior way to strength train. The resistance is more pure the spotter which automatically adjusts the way. If you're struggling you push yourself harder. Va I which selects the wage for you. Opt To push yourself harder. The guidance is is really is really great. Because you're getting a crush routine every day And so I think that that reputation is starting to to proceed us community has really grown become very vibrant. And I think that's all great very exciting. And you mentioned that initially customers didn't quite know what to make for Assad and do you think that was more phone Education thing that you had to explain the product more and you had to put up that reputation like you mentioned like something that you had to change around the product experience fall for your users. It was all about. It was all about education and about letting people experienced thing that was new and different than what they'd seen before you know when you walk into a gym and you look at our traditional cable crossover weight machine or you look at Iraq dumbbells. I think we all know what those things do. I think with tonal people. Look at it and you know it's really small. It's leak and and it's easy to underestimate because pretty until that same person. Twenty minutes later is sitting on a puddle on the ground puddle of sweat on the ground you know out of breath the thing we hear most often from people as it exceeded my expectations. This is way harder than I ever expected him. The resistance is more pure. It's smooth and in in the beginning. You know it it. You know people look at this thing. They don't is under skeptical? And then after you know after. The community began digging gave momentum. I think we started to see See The tide turn.

Dr. Marc Bubbs on Gut-Biomes, Phone-Vacations, Sleep and a Human First Perspective to Athletic Performance

"Thanks for having me on the performance usually with Canada basketball and work as a consultant as well so if the lead sport and also with recreational clients looking improve their performance and you know my background and nutrition also naturopathic medicine so bringing a bit of a holistic view on an athlete health and human health in terms of performance. And and that's pretty much the philosophy leeann anywhere from people trying to look better feel better all the way up to you know a lot of our guys obviously play in the NBA and people got into the Olympics. And I'm always amazed at how similarities like the problems. We're having a highest level. Could actually be quite similar to the problems. The rest of us are having your trying to perform at work and at home. So there's a lot of similarities but of course definitely differences as well. The answer that that answer kind of takes me to the first question I had for. You is the idea of fitness versus health. And I think we hear that sometimes the sense of someone who looks fit in the gym might not necessarily be healthy or vice versa. And so what's for the for a high performance perspective? Those of us who work with athletes like what's I maybe. It's not a point but is what's that point were poor health really starts to spill over into performance. I mean does it start from square. One does after hit a critical mass in anything. It's probably complex question but what What would be a good would be a good indicator of that that crossover between health and performance or health? It's a fascinating question right. Because we assume the two are are are so intertwined and swearing fitnesses. Obviously the ability form of physical task helping state of well being and they do travel together to a certain degree but then when we really just the tip of the spear they start to veer off and grey paper. Maybe three or four years ago. Now by Paul Larson film off its own. Athletes fit but not healthy and of course. The endurance crowd is is definitely one that the interns athletes are ones that tend to experience that more than than even others right. Kassir pushing the volume. They're pushing the intensity and so this notion around you over training being just a person who's unhealthy right and so from a high performance standpoint. I mean I think when we look at some of the research around again. This is more than the endurance side but international the national level competitors. We see that international competitors get sick forty percent less than national level competitors if you can just show up every day in the gym or every day of practice and not miss days at the end of that year or that block of four years and you're going to be that much further ahead in the competition and so I think it's pretty cool now that we see this athlete health component. You know the skewing first idea being more intertwined with different performance models and you know on the female side of things again on the endurance with endurance sport. We used to just be part and parcel it if you're elite female endurance athlete. You GONNA lose menzies. And that's just part of the part of the story and of course China with experts like Dr Susan Kleiner. You know new new research coming out showing that women who maintain menstrual function which again is sort of a proxy for health right actually performing better as some of these lead levels and so whole notion that if we can keep athletes healthy particularly in you know team sports like forcing basketball or you know what we would call soccer but most the world calls Football Ohio you have. These athletes were so skilled. You know if you if you can get a forty four inch vertical leap and you're the fastest guy in the floor you know. Do we really need all of the things that has just keeping you healthy enough to show up every day. Probably the biggest performance lever. So those are some of the things that you hear being discussed more now and I think it's It's been interesting in practice to be able to see what are some of the less direct things that we can improve someone's performance by just supporting these areas of health. Then allow them to just be them and show up and do the amazing things that they can do. The I really really like that Thought with the showing up in the consistency and the stats behind that and I had a couple of thoughts was just with distance runners in general. I. I always had heard the idea. I think Dan John Coach. Dan John it said something like this. If you go to a masters track meet. The spinners look ten years younger than they really are. And the distance runners look ten years old and it was It was tough one. I always I always like okay. That does seem about right. I guess like it could make sense but then I was. It was like Dr Bruce Lipton stuff and he was talking about DNA. Telomeres and repetitive tasks. Like if the task is alter repetitive eight does something to aid your telomeres. Faster and mccaw. Maybe this is why I don't know I mean I don't want to speak for everybody. Necessarily they're probably becomes that point. We're distance rains good and then turns into too much and maybe trails versus roads or diversity. This is an interesting area to me. Yeah no I think it's really interesting as well. I think as a heuristic kind of works too because you do tend to see that. I think there's a few areas like obviously training outside if you trained in the sun and you live in California Arizona. You're getting all that happens. The skin which can impact but I think the glucose aspect is a really interesting one because we know that if you're not perform on race day as elite endurance athlete you do need a significant amount of carbohydrate and month after month year after year depending on what kind of strategy you're using. I mean that's GonNa those dance to glaciated. End Products are going to start to lead to more more impact the skin. So if you're if you're more focused on how the skin is looking you may want to adopt certain strategies and maybe sacrifice performance would. I don't know if that's a conversation for the pocket. Yeah yeah that'd be the on the very specific on subserve running podcast and looking good or not aging age or something like that I the second thought I had from what you're saying. I love that idea of consistency. I think it's something that we don't we don't necessarily think of like it's not very sexy to be like well you know. Show up and do that as long as possible. I think that when especially elite athletes and I've had talks other talks with coaches on this podcast about some. There's some elite athletes who just have a really bad diet but the question is then right. How long this catches up with you. At what age is going to catch up with yours. What what ages are going to start costing you. I guess that's my My follow up to that is how do athletes with a really poor diet and who are getting away with it and early. Twenty s are these things showing up later is different for everybody What's your take on all that? I mean it's one we see. You know you see sports now like Roger Federer. When he started to thirty four thirty five he started to lose. Some of those majors look like this for him. And of course all of a sudden at thirty six thirty seven. He starts winning majors again. Australian opens repeats and then Wimbledon. Geez guys now thirty seven thirty eight thirty nine you still the top four in the world. I mean he wins. The I guess to the quarter finals of tournaments was still almost the same ease as he did when he was in his mid twenties and that from a generation ago. I mean no when I was growing up north thirty in your tennis player. Men that the drop office was. Pretty Sean Right. So I think a lot of the science around nutrition Sleep obviously recovery. Obviously things like training. I think that's flat curve a little bit and allowed a lot of these athletes to be able to to play a lot longer. I mean you know candidate Basketball Steve. Nash I mean he played until he was forty and he had a back condition. You know I mean that's just playing a point guard position in the NBA is phenomenal. And so I think that's where the buying can be difficult for young athletes because you know nowadays are nineteen or twenty into the League. You know when you're that age you're indestructible right. You're not thinking you're thirty. Everything's just feels great. You can get away with everything and so I think that's one having an environment where people are just making certain decisions Really helps because environment too powerful influence from

FOMO and Managing the Exceptions

"Here's the editor of Lens. Work Publishing Brooks Jensen. I WanNa talk today. A little bit about the pragmatics of equipment and equipment selection relative to what it is that we want to produce. It's a topic that we've discussed before but there's a new take on it that I want to share about the nature of compromise to begin with there appears to be one prevalent strategy for choosing a camera and lens system and that strategy seems to be driven by the recently coined acronym. That's made its way into the photographic lexicon Thommo the fear of missing out and all you have to do is go look at camera reviews on Youtube or in the current crop of magazines. And you'll see that this is a big one. It's the primary marketing tool that camera. Manufacturers are using the implication being that you might miss a shot if you don't have the latest greatest camera but the premise of this idea. Is that the cameras should be capable of not only the photographs we routinely WANNA make but the ones that we might possibly WanNa make no matter. How unusual the circumstances and if we don't buy the right camera that is the one with maximum capabilities. We might find ourselves frustrated when that rare opportunity presents itself because of the limitations of our equipment and so they tell us we need to buy a piece of equipment that will handle every possible situation. I'm not sure that's the best strategy. For the simple reason that it unquestionably over engineers. Most of what we do. It also fails to include an important part of the decision making process known as the opportunity cost. Now for those of you who are not familiar with the term opportunity cost. The opportunity cost is what you have to pay as a result of the decision that you made to buy something else so for example if you buy a very high megapixel camera that's GonNa cost you a bunch of time Time to copy the files over to your computer and hard drive space and etc. Those are all things that you're going to have to give up efficiency of time efficiency of storage. You'RE GONNA have to give up all of that in order to pay for the advantage of having a high megapixel camera and speaking of that crazy megapixel rat race. We seem to be involved in. This whole idea seems to me to be wholly based on the idea that we might. I repeat might want to make a large print. Well let's look at that for just a minute. As an example of compromise and how we might alternatively managed the exceptions if we don't have a high megapixel camera for example so the theory of having a high megapixel camera is that we wanna make really big prints but of course if you WanNa make really big prints you need a really big printer and so there's costs involved. They're not just for the high megapixel camera but for the printer and the paper and ink in its CETERA. Now maybe you you'll use a service so you don't have to own the printer but let's set that aside for now because it has its own sort of mathematics involved in it. Let's just assume that you WANNA make your own prince so you need a big printer so the opportunity cost of having the need to make really big prince. Is You have to spend money on a big printer which means you don't have that money available for travel for lenses for paying for models or whatever else you have to sacrifice in order to buy the printer so let. Let's look at a few of these numbers just for grins. And by the way I know numbers are hard to follow in an audio podcast. But I'll try to do my best to make it simple. Let's look at for example. Epson printers in their list price so seventeen inch printers run between twelve hundred and two thousand dollars. How many mega pixels do you have to have to use these seventeen inch printers to make say a Standard Sixteen by twenty print at two hundred and forty? Ppi well you need a whopping eighteen mega pixels? That's it anything over eighteen mega pixels. If all you'RE GONNA make is sixteen by twenty prints is really not necessary unless you do a lot of cropping and things like that and obviously if you buy a seventeen inch printer you don't intend on making any images bigger than sixteen by twenty so you really don't need anything bigger than eighteen megapixel unless you wanNA printed a little higher resolution like three hundred or three sixty or something like that which I'll get to a just a minute. Let's say you WANNA make even bigger prince so you invest somewhere between twenty three hundred and forty seven hundred dollars which probably more than you paid for your camera on a twenty four inch printer. Now you can make twenty by twenty four inch standard size photographic prints at two hundred forty P P I. How many mega pixels will you'll need? Well you'll need twenty eight Megapixel for twenty by twenty four inch print. That's it so why spend the money for the sixty year one hundred megapixel high resolution camera unless there's some other reason than a large print but let's say you're interested in really pushing the envelope so you step up to a forty four inch printer and all? That's involved with that in terms of paper sizes and Matt Sizes and frames and Cetera. So you have a forty four inch printer and you paid somewhere between five thousand and thirteen thousand dollars for it. You are serious about this right so now you can make a thirty by forty inch print at two hundred and forty. Ppi You will need a sixty nine megapixel image for thirty by forty inch print. Okay so now you can sort of justify those high megapixel cameras because you need sixty nine megapixel but wait a minute. The reason you buy a forty four inch printer and all that's required to make it successful including the camera is because you are in pursuit of excellence. You're really pushing the envelope. You WanNa make print that is so outstanding that it's beyond technical question whatsoever which means you probably won't want to print a two hundred and forty. Ppi because a print it three hundred PPI or maybe even some people say three hundred and sixty PPI is microscopically better. And that's what you're interested in pursuing is the microscopically better. Well what do you need in order to make a thirty by forty inch print at say three hundred sixty PPI? Well if you work out the math you need a three hundred eleven megapixel camera which doesn't exist. And as a matter of fact your sixty or seventy megapixel high resolution full frame camera isn't even close to providing that kind of resolution which means that it will require some sort of compromise and the compromise might be that you have to do some stitching multiple exposures piece them all together to make the three hundred eleven megapixel file or you have to print at a lower. Ppi on your forty four inch printer to get your thirty by forty inch. Print and this is the nugget of the issue the requirement for some sort of compromise. I would propose to you that. All of photography is some sort of compromise and with that in mind than the fear of missing out takes on a different kind of reality. It's it's not really sane to be worried about the fear of missing out. It seems to me the more reasonable policy. The more reasonable strategy is to figure out what the exceptions are and try to manage those so if we thought through our choice of equipment sufficiently. I think it's fair to say that our choice will be made based on the fact that it serves us well for what ninety or ninety five percent of the pictures we WANNA make in my case. That's micro four thirds and it's perfect for my needs. That is to say probably covers ninety percent of the photographs that I wanna make in the size that I wanna make it okay. Fine but what about the exceptions? I'm obviously compromised with that camera. And it sensor size in its resolution in etc and there are some exceptions that are going to crop up that that Kamara's gonna be a problem for me. So what about that five or ten percent of the time when? That camera is not sufficient. What do I do then? Well seems like two choices. I can either forget about those images and just don't make them and concentrate on the ninety or ninety five percent of the images. I can make with my camera and be perfectly happy with it or I can figure out ways to manage the exceptions and develop reasonable work arounds.

iOS 14 code suggests 'iPhone SE 2' may be joined by larger 'Plus' model

"We've been talking quite a bit on the past. Few episodes about the rumored update to the IPHONE. Se to were possibly the iphone eight. I've been calling it the IPHONE. Se iphone eight se too because of the kind of merging of those do things with this week. We got a little more information in a according to nine to five Mac. There seems to be indications in the IRS fourteen Betas the latest ones that the iphone eight se to will actually come in two sizes. So it's looking like there's going to be a regular size and a plus size and really to me then what I think we're going to see is an update to basically the iphone eight in the iphone eight plus We can almost at this point. I think just call it. An iphone nine iphone nine plus with updated specs and possibly a lower entry price point So we're likely going to see a four point seven inch version and a five point five version and to me that pushes it further away from an update to the SEC. Too because the two is that smaller four inch

We have a very tropical air mass Duport right now DFW seventy four yesterday at four o'clock in the seventy three and it's typically near sixty. So a lot of moisture we have as cool French is pretty much stalled across the area, not bringing any cooler air, but that's going to be the focal point. Once we heat up past about eighty-five degrees. Clouds going to start bubbling up, and they'll be slow movers. So again, flooding is going to be the biggest concern and cloud to ground. Lightning temperatures today will range anywhere from the low nineties to well, mid eighties, depending on how the clouds handle your area overnight tonight storm should dissipate around midnight or so temperature around seventy six and then tomorrow, high of eighty three numerous showers and storms, and then this rain will start to taper off into tomorrow next week looks dry humid with highs near ninety right now.
