"But he is definitely not boring. There is a huge difference. Anybody in youtube have done this. Who's talked to professional baseball players. Know that the bar for to be interesting. it's very love again and mike is not boring. He's not a boring person. The weather obsession is not just a bit. He loves it. He's going on the weather channel. He watches the weather channel. We not in this day and age. You don't to watch a show to see what the weather is getting to be where you live you can google or you can look at it on your phone. But he is tuning in to. What's the guy's name nor'easter best friends f. f. l. And he's watching the weather and he owns his own weather. Balloon got paid four hundred twenty six million dollars or whatever and was like. What do you do with it. I mike oh boy. Weather balloon like it is just a hobby that i don't know anyone in my life. Who loves the weather like that. He's the best player in the world and he just loves can i. Can i add on the as this has been made pointed out that he loves the weather and he lives where. There's no weather That also killed. I think that's almost to stay there for right. But that's part of why he's going back to mill village braying. There's a blizzard come on. Give them something interesting. That like the mike trout. Weather's has been beaten into the ground. Like when mlb on the broadcast like during the all star game has him do the weather reports look. He's not in love with being a weatherman right. He's in love with the weather. He's the ways the weather guy. Yes so he's just thinking about the weather in a way that i don't think about anything and i love it. Do you think that his parents anticipated his personality when they made nelson his middle name. Where they like fifth fits. That's a that's a love the weather and your wife in the eagles kinda guy name right nelson. That's the name that's the middle name of a man who has a favorite chair and a weather balloon like that's that's what that name means like. Michael john No people sometimes site his affection for whether as evidence that he's not interesting because like a. Hey that the most interesting thing about him is that he likes the weather. And like whether it's your go-to like conversational. Small talk when you have nothing to say you talk about the weather. And so the fact that he's identified with weather associated with whether people think that makes him boring but really being that interested in almost. Anything is interesting. i think. And being that into whether you're not like a meteorologist and when you're like one of the best athletes in the world is actually interesting and to the extent that he is bland like there are some ways in which he's planned obviously he's not gonna give you super exciting postgame quotes and all of that. But i've come to value that quality to really like there was a point. I guess where. I probably would have wished that mike trout said more interesting attention getting things but like we don't need that i don't think because there is a whole generation of players who just really capture your attention with everything they do and everything they say now. So maybe that was more glaring when mike trout was like clearly the face of baseball or whatever. It's silly conversation. But like now that you have tattoos and you have guerrero and you have a kunia and you just have like all of these guys. It's not like there's a void of personalities in the sport right now and so. I think he's a nice complement to that. Because like he's just superman. Like superman is not inherently all that interesting character really at least a lot of the time but like he's a cool iconic memorable character nonetheless and i'm sick of like finding out that people in baseball are bad. He never know with that he would right but like from what we know and from what we can tell like. There's no sign that there is some skeleton in in my closet and that is refreshing. And i just like that. He's the guy who's just like always working hard and saying he's taking it a day at a time and like signing autographs for kids constantly and like doing charity work. And all this stuff like it's you know kinda cliche almost but he's like the good guy superhero in. I think you need someone who fills that role to and like. We probably need more people who are just like seemingly good even if it makes them blend from one point of view. So i've come to value that about overtime. He is a metronome in a way for our baseball watching. Lives right and and that is his personality too. I think there was a lot said about him face in baseball. Whatever and i think something that jordan eventually kind of agreed upon is like mike. Trout is not the guy for like attracting new fans necessarily but he's outstanding at retention. Like if you're in on baseball mike. Trout is going to keep you in on baseball. Once you find out about him right and it seems it seems like it seems like other ballplayers really like him. He seems to be very well liked. And when you're the best at something and you know we talked about a year to year variable whatever like when you are the mike trout of your generation it would be easy for people to dislike you no matter how nice you are just because you're the bust and it's a competitive field and they're competitive young guys and they wanna take that mantel but he seems to be very well liked by every comes in contact with him in the game even though he does want to tell you about the ten day forecast. Let's useful you know you don't want to be caught unawares even if you have an app in your pocket. Maybe it's working. Or what have you. so. I don't know it seems like a good indicator that people could have all sorts of reasons to have animus toward him just because they're jealous and they just don't really seem to so that's nice wholesome. He seems at least from afar like kind of uncomplicated. Like he just wants to play baseball and be the best baseball and devote himself to that and take care of his family and like he knows where he wants to and he decided that he wanted to stay there and he just did what he does what he wants to do. Remember when that back and forth between like rob manfred taking shots at trout for not promoting himself more than trout or the angels kind of fired back a bit like he is who he is and like. He's he's not apologetic about that and he's not trying to be something he's not and he's not the iconoclast he is not like mr. Let the kids play. And overturn all the unwritten rules or anything. he's not like upholding unwritten rules or enforcing them or anything. He's not like mr traditionalist old school guy. Either he is just going about his business. Suddenly there's nothing not to admire about him. And i would say like the one that to this is it. It's a small thing but there are a lot of Bland ones the ones. Who are maybe putting their heads honoring mike charge is enjoying himself like his smile. A lot. right he smiles. He's laughing with teammate. And like that goes a long way to where it doesn't look likely he does still look like he's having a great time and even though he's not giving us the best quotes that still comes through on tv and makes just as more like a moon versus other players where they do look like. They're literally doing job. Yeah exactly so so not to name names. You take you but you know. That's that's another thing that i would. I would just add on trout personality thing. But anyway i think you are. Yeah well we covered it a little bit in in our discussion here. But i really despite the fact that i would love to see him play october baseball more often. I really love that. He decided to stay with the angels and like he committed like there is a no trade clause in that contract..

"I was like, why did you think you were going to get him back or have a chance at signing him at the end of the something? I was surprised that the size a little bit. Now I don't think it's that unfair but I also was surprised the dodgers jumped on it that quickly. I mean. I have a crazy. Breakdown his contract I gave it to me twelve years right. GonNa average out he plays. Within the amount of games 'cause we'll play games added into this. You know you go days off whatever hardened sixty, two games a year. Over twelve years. If he sticks his whole contract out, he'll play one, thousand, nine, hundred and forty four games right? Which means per game, he's going to get one, hundred, eighty, seven, thousand dollars per game to play. Money in the bank man I, don't have an issue with it. My trout, it gets got four, hundred, twenty, six, million dollar contract. So if you're going to try to guilt me into saying the red sox shouldn't have paid that amount. You're not gonNA, win I still think he's probably worth it. Given how much these owners are worth and I wanted to see him in right field and Boston into the rest of you know he was playing days Yeah. That's a lot. It's probably more than we would ever offered but if these sign with the Red Sox, I wouldn't have really cared that much for that price tag. I. Think he's just the touchable Oh might trout honestly you know he's not as good, but he's somewhere in that. Somewhere in that ballpark and I, think he look good and dodger uniform I think they're going to play with them batting second third that's going to be rotated throughout the time he looks quick. I'm fine with it. Honestly, the dodgers have money is shockingly the dodgers who have a lot of good players. They're not in a bad payroll situation. They didn't make that crappy David Price Contract So they're not as in much trouble as the red sox are. So ultimately like it's not a contract that bothers me that much the smart I, call it smart by the dodgers. Well, let's put it this way. I told you how much he makes per game. Hundred Eighty seven thousand dollars per game. All right now let's go with another recent contract citing. Five. Hundred three million dollars. For, ten years. For Patrick. Mahomes. Guy? Yeah. All right. We're GONNA. Say that if he plays all those years, all those games he'll have. Two hundred games under his belt. Yeah okay. Which means the Patrick. Makes per game. Two, point five million dollars game. Yeah it's better deal here. Yeah. Okay. so that's crazy but honestly, it's two different sports. Baseball is one hundred, sixty, two, game season football sixteen. That's just that's just the way it is. So it is a weird way to look at what I will say is that the the real difference there lies in the salary cap in football versus where you get to a cap in baseball and then the luxury tax. So. That's why baseball has more guaranteed money need these more guaranteed contracts. And that are much much longer..

"Thank very risky fashion the cubs are a particularly leverage team and running with a bunch of leverage in the past has not been as risky acting as as one would think because business in baseball has been good but when something like this happens that's where the race comes into play and and listen to customers to buy up real estate around the the Wrigleyville area if they have to do it they chose to do it they chose to do it in search of profits and it's an understandable move business wise but I'm just not gonna sit here and feel sorry for billionaires I'm sorry I'm not I don't think anyone is I think if you look at it but if you look at the public perspective listening because I hate billionaires I don't I respect somebody's ability to go out and make money but but the idea that the owner of a franchise is is vitally important to the well being of that franchise I don't think that's true I'm sorry if a club whether it is the Chicago Cubs the New York Yankees the Miami Marlins the New York Mets the Texas Rangers whoever it may be if a club goes into bankruptcy you know what's going to happen happen someone else is gonna buy it and that person is going to be really rich too and they're gonna get back on their feet and they're gonna run the club as best they can remember blouse endless Dodgers went into bankruptcy a couple years ago one of the marquee franchises in all of baseball and and how did they end up getting out of it for the significant betterment of the franchise and of its success regular garbage out of there and and to have the owners that they do and mark Walter in company right now they will get better yeah yeah and in so let's let's not allow ourselves to get caught up in this idea of of feeling sorry for these poor franchises that have seen their franchise values grow exponentially over the last couple of decades they could happen if they wanted and I'm talking all thirty of them they could have pocketed these profits and put them away in an emergency fund but instead there are some who chose to reinvest them and leverage themselves because of that and they're the ones who are in a bad situation right now so do you were talking to Jeff Passan for me has been do you believe when buster was on SportsCenter says the cubs more than most our cash strong maybe because of the real estate the billion dollars to renovate the ballpark starting a new TV at whatever the reasons are that it could be at nine AM on the discs at the stock market the bell rings were back bones start trading guys away just get whatever you can get the money out here it's possible I I've spoken with with a couple of executives who don't think something like that can happen because in order to great guys you need to have organizations that are willing to take on these large salaries how many teams are going to be in a in a cash rich situation where they can't take that Valerie flight that they're not going to be a lot of people who are looking to add yes and and money going out the door at this point so I just don't know that the market's going to be robust enough to have it make sense you're not I'm sorry but you're not giving away Kris Bryant that would be like an abdication of ownership you need to try and win baseball games right there it you would you would lose fans you would lose so many more fans if you just started dumping guy get rid of salaries and and that's not the way that the Chicago Cubs or anything frankly should operate okay so do you think if you could give truth serum to Mookie Betts Kris Bryant and regardless of his press conference this spring training I stick to my reporting he was offered a massive extension it wasn't in line with what Scott Boras wanted so they didn't sign it and that's fine that's their right do you think that if you gave all those types of guys who all turned on extensions truth serum they go yeah I should have taken it and we may never get that money back yeah but it did you can only operate under what you or what you're dealing with at the time I'm sorry Mike is as prescient as people want it to stay they warn about this I don't think anybody until Rudy go bear came down the coronavirus recognized that this was going to have a staggering impact on our society and and that this was going to be something that was gonna last for months and years to come I think we got there would like to wake up on that for America and that I remember you know the time I think it's like rain may have been a week they have been two weeks before that happened I wrote a column about why Christian Yelich taking the deal he did with the brewers was problematic and and emblematic as well of things going on in the sport at the time I got Christian Yelich is deal with bad deal right now Christian elders feel looks awfully gas and right now Gerrit Cole deal whole hell I mean Gerrit Cole deal has a chance and and that for pictures at least let's remember going into that the largest deal for a pitcher was two hundred seventy nine dollars David price Gerrit Cole I got fifty percent more than that three hundred twenty four million dollars I I I don't even know how long it might be decades before we see a picture get as much as Gerrit Cole did there and and Mike trout we have four hundred twenty six million dollars I again looking back had a chance to get three hundred maybe if he had an MVP type season four hundred I have no idea what Mookie Betts is created it's gonna look like this office now and it'll be fascinating for me to see what he gets but I can tell you this is not gonna be what what of it not even close not even close our last one I read your R. I read everything you write I will I follow you on Twitter obviously I watch on TV you said and I'm paraphrasing here that there's gonna be a lot of posturing on both sides it's gonna look like we're not going to get a deal done and then at the eleventh hour the smoke's gonna clear the fog to go to left as you said and they will get a deal done do you still believe that this morning yeah I absolutely believe that justice it makes too much sense to get a deal done when the alternative is dire for all parties involved as that is we want another nineteen ninety four because that's what this is this is nineteen ninety four except worse if they don't play they lost the World Series that year they would lose an entire fan base if they don't play this season because of money now if they don't play because concerns about health I get that and I think a lot of people across the country would understand that as well but I I have a difficult time seeing it coming down to that if they don't play because local governmental officials decided to grandstand and say that this is not going to happen that's a possibility and by the way what what JB Pritzker said yesterday was was so catastrophically ignorant thank you in in in in balancing honestly and and it's happened multiple times now you know Andrew Cuomo didn't quite go that far but but for a sitting governor in a state where unions are as vital institution as they are in in the city of Chicago and all of the smaller towns throughout Illinois sit there and say something like that and it just showed a complete lack of grasp of the subject that yeah I don't know better about if you want to speak out yeah and my yeah I is I let you go I said to the boys here he should have said when he is quote was I must say I'm disappointed in many ways the players are you know holding out for you know these very very high salaries and payments during a time when I think everybody sacrificing I felt he should have said look I love baseball we've got cardinal fans in the south we got brewer fans at the top of our state we got cubs and Sox fans everywhere I don't know the details I just hope both sides will come together get a deal done that's how you answer the question yep that is the correct answer to the question I do I do also find it amusing that you talk about how players don't want to get their salaries cut thirty two games a season capped players are getting half of what their salaries are supposed to be I haven't seen a single front office yet where and I'm not listen I'm not blaming proper specials at all for this year you know hi as as little as you can from people's paychecks right yeah I haven't seen a single problem special yet say I'm gonna take a fifty percent pay cut and maybe there are some of them not publicizing it like I could I could totally see if they are clean generator company like that obviously but my point is the players are already taking a larger hair cut than anybody in the sport so spare me your players aren't negotiating here are aren't compromising here and and please get the facts first Hey man have a great day and keep up the great work because you're awesome after the Best Picture possible that's our guy Jeff Passan E. S. P. N. time out more of your calls straight ahead this is capping company on ESPN one Chicago's home for sports Carmen and.

"Do radio says the four hours of radio especially four hours of radio that starts at six AM yeah you say things to and I just slip out sometimes your even noticing well I'm not even sure it happens the guys are are you trying to tonight we'll play book in second leave enough time for book it here at you guys tell me I called Damon Jones something besides his name was Jamie let me make you the GM of what jaman let me make you the GM Jamie let me make you the GM that is and I mean it's pretty damning it is jaman as you would know what I like it better when I was telling them it didn't happen and then you know and here's the thing well it's making the GM you're getting ready to talk about the GM you've got Damon on there so naturally those two things just kinda smashed together a little bit it's our you know what I understand in the afternoon you get up there you're all prepped your fresh as a daisy it's three o'clock eastern life is good I'm coming to you that is in the afternoon to write he screws up words left and right well see no you know what you know you're not exempt from this either now because I got beef with no no because we're getting ready to do all this and he's content to mock will right now because we'll screwed up a word in all this one we're getting ready to do book it there's only two of us here usually I hosted but we wanted a third voice in here right and some new does come with you okay and show you Jamie we're gonna get jaman on this now we thought about calling jaman back but instead I was like you know what let's get his voice on the talk to you guys all the time you know spent a bit the lights were too bright the morning show noodls afraid to come on here and do this with us and SO club is going to take up the mantle because apparently still is the only place making tough guys these days noodle got scared so I had to step up to the plate done real I don't know I mean to step it up let's go we are ready hi to give if I were you ready for this you know I was born ready for this all right let's go the saints will bring back all three of quarterbacks includes juries teddy Bridgewater and take some hill no not book in that no no no no no no sorry no I did it without any but what I do no Sir no no no no yeah no Sir no Hey that's a bill that's echo your no you'll see like if I what I'm saying is I almost involuntarily did a Stephen day sales I mean you guys it's been a lot of time together there's a little bit of rain season there I'm not gonna book this either which you can come back taste until drew Brees I think I really think they had the marriage to taste of hell I mean you've seen the love affair from the outside looking in so I'm not gonna book is either I'm with you on those two teddy Bridgewater start for someone next year okay Judy will be a future in Tom Brady will be a forty nine in action you want to book it and I tell you I so far well this is try to be right on these are so yeah I think it disposed to try no no no sorry no no yeah I know as much and bill Barnwell I think was trolling all of us when he threw this out in the universe on the E. S. P. N. daily the other day and then went on straining company did the same thing and you know what I can make it makes sense in my brain well that's the crazy part is I can say man if you were to swap those the patriots get back the guy in the bill Belichick wanted to build around in the future Tom Brady can be there for two years and you can go and draft a quarterback it would allow Kyle Shanahan a company who albeit got to pick Jimmy grapple in a way to go and search for a new guy to build around if they truly want sold came in we were just doing a whole segment on people don't walk away teams to walk away from even middle class quarterbacks in the NFL user to do something radical like trade two starters for each other would it not be the franchise with the young court young coach in the young GM will both have job security that that will be the place not now no Sir no I'm not gonna look at either okay no player trade before the deadline will have any major impact on the playoffs you want to book it book it okay we talk about a hundred dollars today I'm sure you would dial if you wear this is not gonna have a major impact I don't even mind here contenders and I don't know is gonna get bigger today who Marcus Morris to the clippers and they're already contender I see you look at some historical context here the Sixers traded from a tumble in one would go on to reach the finals the pistons got Rasheed Wallace went to the finals that season for the Lakers traded for Palca sol in two thousand eight went to the finals and the Knicks traded for Carmelo Anthony in two thousand eleven and will reach the playoffs for three straight years which is essentially winning an NBA championship for the New York Mets and the question is major impact on the playoffs right is on the fact that it would push you one round deeper than you would have made it without that tree and I don't think so because the Miami Heat if they're gonna go around deeper it's because of the guy already there in June book six is we'll have a new coach by the start of the post season are you going to book it I am gonna book that I do I think this is been building for a lot of reasons I will call in for anybody job we don't do that but David Jones said this is a coaching issue now he things Brett brown's gonna work it out I think this is been smoke as you put billowing out of the building for too long when it comes to the job of Brett brown she I don't want to book this but what's going to happen is the Sixers are gonna get to a point where they're going to ask themselves the question we're asking this morning is this do the problem and before they can get to an answer on that they're going to try to find out if the coach is the problem they're going to see if somebody else can make this do will make sense which only giving me to the start of the playoffs so this change to happen I book it you will find in there celebrating a hundred percent I would I would have ever gone three years ago so my god it was nice with the Yankees and Dodgers will not be the World Series match of next season you can book it so the Yankees and Dodgers they mean the two odds on favorites by a country mile right after the movie back straight that brought him over to the Dodgers from yesterday I'm gonna say no just because of the I'm sorry no not gonna booking this is Justin how baseball works like we'll see one of these teams I firmly believe is going to win it all they're that good we see more of that lately but baseball's to randomize especially when you get to the postseason too much can happen the Yankees are seven to ten oh yeah I am booking is art and and the Dodgers are for one it is on the we said this yesterday some of the best odds in fifteen years some of the most certain outcomes we've seen in a long time for the Yankees and Dodgers makes World Series with a mad what's amazing is a seven game series playoff format would be the kind of gives you certainty that tells you the best team will win it happens in the NBA that wins in a much easier lead to predict but I am going to book it like you random this happens more in baseball they just don't what does even at seven zero game format it's like hockey it's the nature of the sport you can have one player so affect the outcome of the sport await a hot picture a hot goaltender something like that that that completely to me throws off the season long trends which is insane for support the plays that many games and real quick Mookie Betts will not get a four hundred million dollar contract look it in a book and this is getting paid yeah I know sorry guys you I mean we just had Jeff passing in here yesterday who said he was the best red Sox since Ted Williams for god sakes like that was a real thing that came out of his mouth that ninety seven that guy's twenty seven four hundred million because he's going to a team that we already said didn't need him to win a World Series Mike trout look is twenty seven years old to get to four million he's gonna need is gonna need a long long term contract he was trapped twelve years four hundred twenty six million dollars live in LA for twelve years sign me up any but I think that's gonna get as well for the book our last one real quick as well call David Jones jaman jaman let me make you GM Jamie let me make you the GM or no sorry no no no no we were going to waste time on this well I mean that's that's the one thing is will was defiant during the blessing don't play the sound bite before we book it next time you get a let me make you the GM make me commit first I was fully committed that did not happen no I can say you dug your heels and it was is that this was the first take debate desk you dug your heels and you're ready to go and then we come to drop them it's it happens man you blend words together you just mess up listen I my father son I've the fattest mouth on the planet happens all the time all right coming up the NBA trade deadline.
